  2. Horrifying returned to the winner’s circle on Saturday with a brave win at Flemington. Photo: Grant Courtney Flemington specialist Horrifying turned back the clock and returned to top form with a determined victory on Saturday. It was the fourth win from 11 starts at Flemington for the Shocking gelding, who has also picked up three minor placings at the famous Melbourne track. Horrifying has had a total of 34 starts for six wins, eight placings and $616,827 in stakes. Almost two years had passed since Horrifying’s last win – a 2500m race at Flemington in August of 2022, which capped a winter sequence of three wins from four starts. That career-best run of form also included a win in the Flemington Cup (2800m), which had its 2024 edition staged on Saturday. Horrifying went winless in eight starts in between times, prompting a move from the Mark and Levi Kavanagh stable into Lindsey Smith’s beach environment. The six-year-old made an inauspicious start from his new stable with a distant last at Warrnambool in late April, but Saturday was a very different story. Completing a quartet of winners on Saturday’s card for expat Kiwi jockey Michael Dee, Horrifying settled in third and stuck to the rail around the home turn. He sprinted through a narrow opening along the inside and thrust his head in front with 300m remaining. Fellow Kiwi-bred Smokin’ Romans fought back hard alongside him, with a host of other challengers lining up across the track to try to reel him in, but Horrifying kept lifting and held on all the way to the finish line to win by a length at odds of $51 with horse betting sites. “That was just a really good training effort,” Dee said. “We got the right run and were able to come up the inside and hit the front. I wasn’t sure if something would kick back at me, like Smokin’ Romans, but he kept finding and it was a good effort. “I knew he was a lot better than a $50 chance, from his great form a couple of years ago when he strung together a few wins. “I came into today’s race with the ambition to try to be positive and put him into the race, and it worked out really well.” Smith took special satisfaction from Saturday’s win. “He came to me with the idea of going to the beach,” he said. “He was in great order leading into that first run at Warrnambool, where I thought he would win and he ran a long last. “I didn’t think he’d stay in my care for long after that, but the owners are very, very patient and they love this horse. They just asked me to keep persevering. “I tried everything – working him hard, putting him on the treadmill, taking him to the beach. I kept trying whatever I could think of until I ran out of tricks. But in the last couple of weeks I reverted to doing pretty much nothing. “Obviously he’s been a very good horse in his day and he had suitable track conditions here today. “I think turning this horse’s form around is one of the stable’s best results. Not many horses run 100m last and then win their next start. “It was the right day and everything worked out well. We’ll savour this win for now, and then we’ll go again another day.” Horse racing news View the full article
  3. Hit The Road Jack was the best of the stayers on Saturday winning the Flemington Cup (2800m).(Photo by Reg Ryan/Racing Photos) Warrnambool trainer Symon Wilde had two runners in Saturday’s $175,000 Deane Lester Flemington Cup (2800m) and came away with a quinella by the Kiwi-bred pair of Hit The Road Jack and Dashing Duchess. Hit The Road Jack was sent across the Tasman to Wilde’s stable with a jumping future in mind. The Jakkalberry gelding had won seven times from 48 starts on home soil for his former trainer Shaun Phelan, who still retains a share of the ownership. Hit The Road Jack earned more than $245,000 in stakes in that New Zealand career, which also included fifth placings in the Group 2 Avondale Cup (2400m) and Group 3 New Zealand Cup (3200m). An eye-catching fourth at odds of $61 with horse racing bookmakers when he made his Australian debut at Caulfield in late June, Hit The Road Jack switched to hurdling and made a perfect start in that role with a four-length maiden win at Warrnambool on July 7. Wilde brought Hit The Road Jack back to the flat at Flemington on Saturday, and his superior stamina shone through in a powerful Flemington Cup performance. Presented at the top of the straight by rider Michael Dee, Hit The Road Jack strode forward and swept past the leader Taramansour. The biggest challenge came from his stablemate Dashing Duchess, who fought back gallantly on his inside, but Hit The Road Jack edged ahead of her and won by three-quarters of a length. “He’s a great old campaigner,” Dee said. “He’s been around the traps all around New Zealand. I watched some replays from in New Zealand, where he would often take off mid-race and just keep going. “The key today was to keep him in a position where he could work into it. He made easy work of it. I think he almost thought his job was done at the 200m and was waiting for them a little bit. It was a great effort.” The seven-year-old chestnut has now had 51 starts for nine wins, 14 placings and $356,803. “It’s great to get a city Saturday quinella,” Wilde’s racing manager Ben Casanelia said. “The team thought both of those horses would run well today. “The winner came across from New Zealand, originally on a jumps path. He probably surprised a few people with his open handicap run at Caulfield in his first start for us, and then he won that maiden hurdle with a leg in the air. “I think that the wetter it got today, the more his chances were enhanced. He’s a typical, tough New Zealander. He got into a good spot and had momentum at the right time. “I think there was a hurdle race in mind for him after this, but now we might find another race on the flat instead. I’ll leave that up to Symon. “A couple of his owners came across from New Zealand to watch him today. They were thrilled to have a runner at Flemington, let alone a winner, so it’s a fantastic result for them.” Horse racing news View the full article
  4. Jedibeel continues to go from strength to strength with a win at Rosehill on Saturday. Photo: bradleyphotos.com.au Emerging sprinter Jedibeel is taking his career to new heights this autumn and winter, adding a third win to his five-start campaign with a dominant performance at Rosehill. The New Zealand-bred son of Savabeel began this preparation with three wins and four placings to his name from nine career starts, and his rating stood at 71. He resumed with a Benchmark 72 win on the Kensington track on ANZAC Day, followed by a second at Scone, a win in Benchmark 88 company at Canterbury and a last-start second at Randwick on July 6. Jedibeel delivered again in Saturday’s open sprint, improving his career record to 14 starts for six wins, six placings and $358,650. Jedibeel and jockey Tyler Schiller settled in midfield on Saturday before pouncing in the straight and quickly taking command. The four-year-old asserted his superiority and drew away to win by two and a quarter lengths, clocking 1:04.78 for 1100m. Hawkesbury trainer Brad Widdup admits that Jedibeel’s sprinting prowess has taken him somewhat by surprise. However, the gelding is closely related to Waikato Stud’s sprinting superstar I Wish I Win – also by champion stallion Savabeel – whose seven wins include the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m). “I bought this horse to run 2000m,” Widdup said. “But after his first prep I said to Mike (Gregg, owner) I didn’t think he would run 1200m. “We did a genetic test on him and he came back as a sprinter. That made us focus on sprinting with the horse and it has helped a lot. “I think he is just starting to find his feet as a horse. We gelded him this time in and he has been faultless. It was great to see him win today, he was dominant. “He still does a lot wrong, he got into a skirmish at the top of the straight and wanted to lay in a bit, but he is starting to put them away now.” Widdup intends to continue raising the bar with Jedibeel next season. “I will probably give him a break now,” he said. “In December there is the Razor Sharp (Listed, 1200m) or something like that, which could suit him. I haven’t ruled out 1200m. If he goes up in grade with a genuine speed, it will help him. “He is starting to get there and I would like to try him at 1200m again. He is going to be pretty fair horse.” Horse racing news View the full article

  8. Leading Top End jockey Jarrod Todd seals victory aboard the Gary Clarke-trained Masatora in the $135,000 NT Derby (2050m) at Fannie Bay on Saturday. Picture: Darwin Turf Club They’ve dominated the 2023/24 Top End season, so it’s no surprise that trainer Gary Clarke and jockey Jarrod Todd claimed the $135,000 NT Derby (2050m) at Fannie Bay on Saturday For Clarke, it was his second Derby after Finke’s 2016 triumph, while for Todd, it was his second victory after guiding Royal Request home in 2014 for Neil Dyer. Day 4 of the Carnival was a big occasion for Clarke and Todd, with the trainer landing a treble and the jockey sealing four wins. That made it 64 wins for Clarke and 57 wins for Todd for the season, with the pair set to win their 12th and fifth straight Top End and Country premierships, respectively. Masatora, who started at $21 with the top online bookmakers, jumped from gate eight in the 12-horse field and was among six horses vying for the early lead passing the winning post the first time before settling in ninth place when forced three deep exiting the home straight. Into the back straight, Masatora had made ground and was sixth as the Paul Gardner-trained Better Not Fuss (Kyra Yuill), winner of the NT Guineas (1600m) in Alice Springs in April, held sway out in front. Phil Cole’s Rhesus (Emma Lines) was fifth passing the 1000m, while Sheila Arnold’s $3.70 Neds favourite Gifted Gamer (Mark Pegus), Kym Healy’s He’s Maverick (Sonja Logan) and Dyer’s Unquestionably (Noel Callow) were well adrift. Better Not Fuss led by four lengths turning for home, but the backmarkers were winding up with Masatora, He’s Maverick and Gifted Gamer heading wide, and Unquestionably sticking to the fence. Masatora caught Better Not Fuss with 100m to go to seal victory by 1.5 lengths from the fast-finishing He’s Maverick and Unquestionably, with Better Not Fuss pipping Gifted Gamer for fourth place. Darwin Guineas winner He’s Maverick jumped from gate 11 in his quest to seal the Darwin Double $50,000 bonus as winner of the Guineas and Derby. It was never going to be an easy task for He’s Maverick to seal victory when forced five deep turning for home. Unquestionably, a disappointing ninth in the Guineas hit back in style, while Gifted Gamer, who hadn’t raced or trialled at Fannie Bay despite bringing decent Victorian form to town, finished 3.7 lengths adrift of the winner. 2024 NT Derby Replay – Masatora Horse racing news View the full article

  11. Chiefswood Stables' homebred Kin's Concerto, beaten in her first three starts of 2024, performs flawlessly when the stakes were highest July 20 at Woodbine, rallying to take the CA$503,000 Woodbine Oaks for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies.View the full article

  13. Kin's Concerto, whose lone previous victory came via disqualification, made it to the line first for the first time with a stylish victory in the Woodbine Oaks Saturday afternoon. The chestnut filly sat just off the pace while skimming the rail through fractions of :23.78 and :47.96. Behind a wall of horses at the top of the lane, Kin's Concerto angled to the center of the track in upper stretch and closed relentlessly to hit the front in the final strides. “We just wanted to break in early position,” said Sofia Vives, who partnered Cruden Bay to victory one race earlier in the GII Connaught Cup. “We wound up right on the rail. Perfect trip in the turn, I got to get into a two-path, followed the horse that I thought was going to be a tough one, it opened up all the holes, and we shot right through. “She's a very, very talented filly, and she's always shined bright in my eyes,” the apprentice rider continued. “It's pretty exciting for this to happen in your lifetime, but to happen as a bug, I think it's pretty special.” Trainer Josie Carroll, one win away from reaching 1,000 for her career, lauded both Vives and Kin's Concerto. “This young lady has improved leaps and bounds this year,” Carroll said. “She suits this filly very, very much. She listens to instructions, which is what I really like about her. She does exactly what she's asked to do. She was told to sit quiet on this filly, not get in her head and treat it like another race. You know, put the filly in the position that she needed to be in and then have confidence in her and she did just that.” Kin's Concerto finished second, but was promoted to the win in her six-furlong debut over Woodbine's Tapeta last November. She returned with a runner-up effort over the turf at Gulfstream in February and, back on the Woodbine Tapeta, was third in a seven-furlong optional claimer May 11 and second by just a head when stretched to 1 1/16 miles last time out June 22. “She's always shown some talent, she's just had some unfortunate luck,” Carroll said of Kin's Concerto. “Different things that have gone wrong and problems in races. A horse that closes and hooks big fields and has to get through–it's always a challenge.” Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee Rob Landry, who rode three Oaks winners, now has five Oaks to his name, after Nipissing's 2013 triumph and Kin's Concerto's victory, the latter two in his role as Chiefswood's General Manager. “She just shows you the signs and Josie's team has done a tremendous job with her as well,” Landry said. “Sofia rode her great. It was well deserved. I'm happy for the owners, they put a lot into this game and especially when you're in the breeding operation, these types of races are really big.” Kin's Concerto is the final foal out of Kincardine, who died in 2023. The mare was a half-sister to graded winner Essential Edge (Storm Cat) and to the dam of multiple graded winner Flameaway (Scat Daddy). Under the winner's third dam, Flame of Tara, is the likes of Salsabil (Ire) and Marju (Ire). The Woodbine Oaks has served as a King's Plate stepping-stone for several fillies, with the list of Oaks-Plate winners including Moira (2022), Holy Helena (2017), Lexie Lou (2014), Inglorious (2011) and Dancethruthedawn (2001). In 2018, Oaks runner-up Wonder Gadot went on to win The King's Plate. A decision on whether to run this Oaks winner in the Plate will take place in the coming days. “The owners and I will speak and then I'll speak to Josie,” said Landry, who won the 2004 Plate with Chiefswood homebred Niigon. “We're just going to let her cool out and see where it goes from here. We personally haven't had a lot of luck running fillies in the Plate, but a lot of people have. Obviously, you've got to think long and hard about it. We're going to do what's right by the filly.” Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV. 16. There have been 108 editions of the Coaching Club of America Oaks and this time around the Grade I hardware went to the spectacular Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna–Sataves, by Uncle Mo). The leader in her division, the 3-year-old filly just continued to shine and proved a deserving favorite. It did not all go as planned though because Brian Hernandez's mount hopped at the start which forced her to play defense heading into the first turn. Displaying some fine tactical ability once again, the GI Kentucky Oaks champ targeted the pacesetter around the far turn, swept by her opponent and the race was over as she won by several lengths. 18. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – When the seventh race at Saratoga Race Course was finished Saturday, Chad Brown, who deflects credit often, did it once more. The six-time leading trainer at the Spa had just won a $100,000 maiden special weight with the 5-2 favorite, Incentive Pay (Volatile). It was the first juvenile starter of the meet for Brown. Brown didn't want to pat himself on the back after this one. He wanted Pete Bradley, a longtime friend and respected bloodstock agent, to take the bows. At the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Brown left after the first two books. Bradley spied some yearlings that Brown might be interested in. “Chad works the first two books pretty hard, and I have done a lot with him over the years,” said Bradley, who was in Saratoga Saturday to watch Incentive Pay's debut. “He said he could use another horse or two and, if I saw a horse I liked, to let him know. I think I sent him three or four hip numbers and we keyed on this horse.” Hip number 1672 was the one Bradley zeroed in on and the bloodstock agent purchased him for Klarman for $315,000. Bradley has been doing this since 1997 and when he makes a recommendation, people listen. Brown certainly did. “I thought he was exceptionally athletic,” Bradley said. “Not only did he have the frame and the balance, but he had that swagger to his walk. A great presence. These horses, when they come, especially Book Three, they are in and out. Some get a little rattled their first day, but he was good in the morning on the first day he was shown and good at the end of the day. I hate to say he ticked all the boxes for me, but he was the right kind of horse.” “This,” Brown said, “was a real nice pick.” Bradley has known Brown since he was an assistant under the late Hall of Famer, Bobby Frankel. Back then, Bradley saw things in Brown that he was more than happy to pass on to others. “I told people that the young man who was Bobby's assistant, you are going to want to know in the future,” Bradley said. Brown has had success with first-crop sires in the past. Both of his GI Preakness winners–Cloud Computing (Maclean's Music) in 2017 and Early Voting (Gun Runner in 2022)–were by rookie sires. Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables, which owns Incentive Pay, also owned Early Voting and co-owned Cloud Computing. Volatile won five of six starts in his racing career, including the GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt in his last start in 2020. “We like to find value at the sales, and not go for the sales topping horses, the million-dollar horses,” Brown said. “It's not part of our plan. We've been very lucky. If you pick wrong and you hook up to the wrong first crop stallions, it's not a great experience.” Ridden by Joel Rosario, Incentive Pay cut the corner at the top of the stretch of the six-furlong race and looked like a seasoned horse as he came down to the wire. He won by 2 1/2 lengths, was timed in 1:12.20 and paid $7.20. Brown said that the next target is the GI Hopeful Stakes Sept. 2, closing day at the Spa. “We don't always win first out, but we aren't really trying to,” Klarman said. “He broke a little slow, took back and then checked again. Chad gets them ready to run.” Bradley, who said he wanted to be low-key in the winner's circle, departed while Brown was talking to a group of writers. Rest assured though, he was happy. Maybe happier than all of the winners. It was his tout that got the ball rolling in the first place. “It takes a lot of the pressure off, that's for sure,” Bradley said. INCENTIVE PAY (c, 2, Volatile–Distinguishable, by Distorted Humor), tabbed the 5-2 favorite, was taken in hand right from the break and held under a tight rein to race mid pack. Not content to sit under jockey Joel Rosario, he finally got his head off the far turn and had plenty to offer, unleashing a strong move to clear into the lead and win going away by 2 1/2 lengths over Dapper Moon (Malibu Moon) who also closed from off the speed. 19. With pep in his step from the break, Getaway Car (Curlin–Surrender Now, by Morning Line) made every pole a winning one on debut, which secured him a 'TDN Rising Star' badge on Saturday afternoon at Del Mar. The colt proved that his recent bullet works were up to scratch, as he sped to an early lead. Even though Smash It (Star Guitar) was in hot pursuit, the Bob Baffert trainee kept finding and won in geared down fashion as he got his picture taken. The final running time was :57.43. 20. With a trip to the GI Breeders' Cup Classic on the line, it was Dornoch (Good Magic–Puca, by Big Brown) who punched his ticket in the GI NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday afternoon. A 3-1 shot here, the colt from the bell vied for the lead along the rail into the first turn. Shrugging off a challenge from Timberlake (Into Mischief), the GI Belmont Stakes champ established his lead up the backstretch. With favorite Mindframe (Constitution) looming large around the far turn, the Danny Gargan trainee responded and down the lane was able to outlast his opponent to seal the deal. The final running time was 1:50.31. Lifetime Record: 9-5-2-0. Sales History: $325,000 '22 KEESEP. O-West Paces Racing LLC, R. A. 22. By Mike Love A half brother to open class pacer Beach Ball will be among Sheree Tomlinson’s five drives at Addington today. The winner of 17 races this season so far, Tomlinson looks to have a number of good drives, with Bannockburn the last of them in race 7 (4.00pm). Kicking off Tomlinson’s day in race 1, the Original Sin Mobile Pace, will be Big Mama Morris ($8.00FF) for trainer Amber Lethaby. She looks likely to get a soft trip on the markers, drawn one the second line, following out race favourite Krystal Delight. “With the draw we’ve got it should go pretty good. It’s definitely got a good chance of running in the top three or four in an even field and with a good run,” said Tomlinson. Natives Blazin Son ($18.00FF) for trainer Fiona Baigent is a horse that Tomlinson has some time for in the LSG Sky Chefs Mobile Trot. In only its fifth race day appearance today, the son of Majestic Son will look to have an error free race to be in the finish. “He could win a maiden race pretty quickly I think. It just hasn’t had things go it’s way in the last few starts. Its standing start manners have been good and the fitness should be there now having had a few starts back. He’s definitely not the worst.” Brad Mowbray’s Art Major filly Okiwi Bay ($18.00FF) lines up in race 4, The Birdwood Mobile Pace. In what appeared to be an unlucky effort at her last start, Tomlinson suggests the filly may not have had much left to offer regardless of the fact they never got a crack at them. “She hasn’t really been finding the line too well lately. She does have the ability to win a maiden. She will just need luck and need to improve a bit.” Tomlinson then steers family trained Brian Beat ($6.50FF) for Ken Ford and Amanda Tomlinson. The four-year-old Majestic Son gelding has been racing competitively recently, although Tomlinson would prefer a shorter distance today in the Dimitris Trot. “I wish it was a 2000m stand, then I’d be more confident. He’s definitely competitive though. He went good enough last week to suggest he should be in the top three or four. He has such good manners he can get handy without doing too much.” Tomlinson will then team up with trainer Kevin Chapman and debutant runner Bannockburn ($5.50FF) in race 7, the Gerry’s Bakery pace. The three-year-old gelding by Locharburn is a half to open class pacer Beach Ball – both Locharburn and Beach Ball were also trained by Chapman. “I don’t mind this horse. Every time I’ve driven it at the trials it’s improved. He can step pretty good from the stand and I doubt Kevin (Chapman) would be bringing him if he didn’t think he was ready.” Racing commences from 12:47pm. View the full article

  25. Not seen since running third in last year's GI Travers Stakes, Tapit Trice (Tapit–Danzatrice, by Dunkirk) made his return to racing a successful one as he netted the GIII Monmouth Cup in Oceanport. Ranging up on his targets around the far turn, the gray began to pour on the speed. Tapit Trice entered the lane full of run and he sailed home a no-doubt winner by multiple lengths over favorite Highland Falls (Curlin). The final running time was 1:50.46. Lifetime Record: 10-5-0-3.
