Honor A.P.’s Glee Beats The Boys At Lone Star
Wandering Eyes posted a topic in The Rest of the World
With a 'frog strangler' at Lone Star Park, Glee (Honor A.P.–Red Tabby, by Bluegrass Cat) beat the boys over the slop to break her maiden at first asking and in the process handed her freshman sire the second win of his stallion career. The 2-year-old broke well from the outside gate and angled over to take the lead up the backstretch. Glee was followed closely by Big Rasee (Clearly Now), but the filly did not back down around the far turn. Splashing home a winner by multiple lengths, she got her picture taken after the strong opening statement. The Lane's End sire (by Honor Code) has 80 foals of racing age to his credit. The final running time was :52.58. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0. Sales History: $60,000 '23 FTKOCT. O-Mike G. Rutherford; B-No Escape Ranch (TX); T-Steve Asmussen. 1st-Woodbine, C$87,579, Msw, 5-12, 2yo, 4 1/2f (AWT), :52.26, ft, 1 3/4 lengths. FRENCH HORN (f, 2, Complexity–Emma's Encore {GISW, $398,248}, by Congrats) was rewarded for her debut as the 1-1 choice here. The filly got down to business from the bell by making the pace up the backstretch. Chased by her three rivals, she continued to make every pole a winning one around the far turn and into the lane. The juvenile dug down and found more to deliver a second win for her freshman sire (by Maclean's Music). Fellow first timer Kokomo (Flameaway) was second by 1 3/4 lengths. The winner is a half-sister to Man Friday (American Pharoah), SP, $173,138. Emma's Encore foaled a filly last year named Dare to Know (Daredevil) and she was bred to Highly Motivated for this season. Bettors were able to lock in some juicy prices in the two futures pools for this year's GI Preakness S., but banking on which horses would even enter the middle jewel of the Triple Crown ended up being almost as tough a task as choosing a winner. Consider yourself a pretty decent Preakness prognosticator if, in Pool 1 that closed back on Mar. 2, you nabbed 30-1 advance odds on subsequent GI Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan (Goldencents); 19-1 on likely Preakness favorite and 'TDN Rising Star' Muth (Good Magic), or 70-1 on Catching Freedom (Constitution), the Derby's eventual fourth-place finisher. Yet for a select few to be able to hold tickets on those gaudy overlays, there were a lot Preakness futures players whose hopes were dashed long before the crab cakes started cooking in Baltimore. Of the 39 individual betting interests offered in Pool 1, those are the only three colts expected to be entered when the Preakness is drawn on Monday. Most bettors who choose to wade in to futures pools know there is inherent risk involved in trying to chase higher-odds rewards, because if your horse doesn't end up starting, you lose. But Pool 1 of the Preakness futures pool took that concept to the extreme this year, with only 7.5% of the entire slate of individual entrants still in contention less than one week before the race. The “field” option of all other 3-year-olds closed at 5-1. Further contributing to the Pool 1 odds imbalance, so many would-be wiseguys loaded up on 'TDN Rising Star' Nysos (Nyquist) two months ago that his price plummeted to 5-2. The “wisdom” of the crowd at that point in the Triple Crown season was that because Churchill Downs had banned Nysos's trainer, Bob Baffert, the colt (who at the time was ranked No. 1 on both TDN's Sophomore Top 12 list and the NTRA's poll of 3-year-olds), would automatically be targeting the Preakness. But Nysos's connections had never made any such public declaration way back in late winter, and 10 days after Preakness futures Pool 1 closed, he was taken out of training with what Baffert described at the time as a “minor” setback. Nysos has not had a published workout since. But the Baffert-trained Muth subsequently won the Mar. 30 GI Arkansas Derby. And because Mystik Dan ran a non-threatening third behind Muth at Oaklawn, his price drifted even higher, to 45-1, in Pool 2 of the Preakness futures, which closed approximately one hour before the Kentucky Derby went off on May 4. Muth, by contrast, went off at 7-2 odds in Pool 2. Bettors by that time were armed with the knowledge that he was being pointed for Baltimore on May 18. All things considered, that's still a pretty fair mutuel considering he projects to go off much lower on Preakness Day. Pool 2 reflected a much more likely lineup of Preakness starters. Yet because 'TDN Rising Star' Fierceness (City of Light) took the brunt of the action at 9-2 and then stamped himself as a no-go for the Preakness with a 15th-place finish in the Derby, there was still decent value spread among seven other likely Preakness starters. Those overlays include Catching Freedom at 14-1 (far lower than his Pool 1 price but better odds than you will get on Saturday); Imagination (Into Mischief) and Tuscan Gold (Medaglia d'Oro), both at 17-1; Seize the Grey (Arrogate) at 25-1; Just Steel (Justify) at 35-1; Copper Tax (Copper Bullet) at 50-1 and Uncle Heavy (Social Inclusion) at 133-1. The “all others” proposition went off at 12-1 in Pool 2. But among the 10 likely entrants at deadline for this column, the only horse that field bet would cover is Mugatu (Blofeld), who figures to be at least three times that price on Saturday. Lucky Sevens It's only early May, but already we have two horses tied atop the North American leaderboard with seven wins apiece in 2024. Both won races at smaller tracks on Kentucky Derby Day to break a three-way tie among six-time winners this season. Epicurean (Speightster), a 6-year-old mare, scored in a starter/optional claimer at Thistledown to run her record to 7-for-8 through only a little more than four months of racing this year. She's 12-for-42 lifetime, and prior to her second win at Thistle this spring had previously hit the winner's circle during the winter months at Mahoning Valley for owner/trainer Nestor Rivera. Tennessee Moon (Ransom the Moon), a 4-year-old filly, won the $25,000 Swihart Memorial S. at Fonner Park to compile the same 7-for-8 mark this year with victories at both Fonner and Delta Downs. She's 12-for-22 lifetime for owner/trainer Mark Hibdon. Oddly enough, the gelding right behind them in the standings with six wins, Inside Stunt (Greenpointcrusader), is a stablemate of Epicurean's in Rivera's barn. Deja vu All Over Again Here's another oddity: Last June 4, I wrote an article for TDN titled “Deja vu at Atokad” that detailed how the same set of four Nebraska-bred Thoroughbreds, competing in one-furlong races on back-to-back days at Atokad Downs, finished 1-2-3-4 on both afternoons. The mare who won two races within 24 hours was P R Girlfriend (Gold Schleiger). The unusual result was the product of the South Sioux City track's ownership, Ho-Chunk, Inc., needing to conduct at least one day of live racing to maintain Nebraska licensure as an active racetrack, a status that Ho-Chunk, for nearly a decade now, has been perpetuating in an oft-delayed attempt to eventually develop a racino. This year's two-day festival at Atokad was conducted Friday and Saturday. As in recent years, it consisted of three one-furlong races per day, limited to four starters each, with multiple horses entered on back-to-back days. The sprints for Thoroughbreds took place over a straightaway with a J-shaped gallop-out that is part of what remains of the five-furlong oval where the otherwise demolished Atokad previously conducted more traditional race meets from 1956 through 2012. P R Girlfriend, now age six, had gone five starts over the last 11 months without being able to win at two other Nebraska tracks, Columbus and Fonner. But she proved she is a one-furlong specialist and horse-for-the-course at Atokad, winning again on Friday and dead-heating for another victory on Saturday. On Friday, P R Girlfriend went off as the 2-1 second choice (yes, these contests had betting–about $2,300 in win, place, exactas and doubles for that race), scoring by a head in :12.40 despite breaking last in a one-furlong sprint. On Saturday, just 21 hours and 33 minutes later, P R Girlfriend again was sent off as the second choice in a four-horse field. This time she broke third, put away the favorite, then got hooked on even terms at the wire by a fresh closer for the dead-heat win, matching Friday's :12.40 clocking. And P R Girlfriend wasn't the only horse at Atokad to win two races in two days this past weekend. The 9-year-old gelding Pickeljuice (Holiday Justice), who hadn't won a race in nearly two years, also managed the feat. Ho-Chunk business operations manager Marshall Bass told KCAU-TV there is no firm timetable for the new racino, but the hope is to break ground in the next year. “We will continue the races going forward,” Bass told KCAU. “This might be the last year, we might have another one here next year. But in the grand scheme, the big plan at the end is to have these races in a full track at our new facility here in South Sioux City.” The post The Week In Review: Juicy Preakness Future-Bet Prices, Provided You Guessed Who’d Show Up appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. The Todd Pletcher-trained Antiquarian (Preservationist), who won Saturday's GII Peter Pan S. at Belmont's The Big A meeting, will point towards the GI Belmont S. held at Saratoga, Pletcher confirmed Sunday. “He certainly acts like it,” said Pletcher when asked about whether the added distance would benefit Antiquarian. “We didn't get him in until October, but he's always done everything very professional.” Both Antiquarian and Peter Pan third-place runner Protective (Medaglia d'Oro) will ship to Saratoga sometime in the coming week where they will join last year's champion 2-year-old Fierceness (City of Light) in the Pletcher barn. Coming off a disappointing 15th in the GI Kentucky Derby, Fierceness is also on target for the Belmont. Other runners shipping north were GII Man o' War S. winner Silver Knott (Lope de Vega {Ire}) for Godolphin and Charlie Appleby along with Nation's Pride (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) who are both slated to appear during the Belmont at Saratoga meet. Tamfana (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) will attempt to gain compensation for her luckless run in the G1 1,000 Guineas when she makes her next appearance in the G1 Prix de Diane at Chantilly on Sunday, June 16. Trained by David Menuisier, Tamfana confirmed herself a high-class filly when finishing fourth at Newmarket, passing the post less than a length behind the winner and looking unlucky not to get closer still having endured a troubled passage. Now all roads lead to Chantilly and the next stage of a plan which has been a long time in the making according to Eamonn O'Connor, managing director of owners Quantum Leap Racing. “We've had this plan in mind over the winter, that it [the Prix de Diane] would be her main target,” O'Connor said. “Whatever she did then [at Newmarket], we expected her to step up for the trip that the Diane offers, so that's where we will go. “We're pretty confident she'll stay at least that–most of the horses that Quantum Leap Racing buy are horses with a staying pedigree. It will be a great day out, I know that from previous experience. We'll enjoy it and we're looking forward to the season beyond.” Reflecting on Tamfana's run at Newmarket, O'Connor added, “David and I had a conversation as we were still in two minds about whether to go to France, but he thought the filly was good enough to win the English Guineas and I don't think he was wrong. “We had a tremendous day, the members had the best day of racing most of them have ever had. We didn't win but it felt like we did. There was some mixed emotion afterwards about what could have been, but it's churlish to take anything away from the winner of a race like that and start going on about your own hard luck. We didn't win, but in truth we did come home thinking we had the best filly. “David has never lacked faith in her. On the day she arrived she didn't look like a €20,000 horse, that's for certain. He genuinely wasn't surprised by the run. A little bit gutted, I guess, that he didn't get his Classic winner but not at all surprised that she ran so well.” The post Prix De Diane Up Next For Improving Tamfana appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Completing a treble of shocks on Sunday's ParisLongchamp card, Alain Jathiere and Christine Guilbert's Birthe (Ire) (Study Of Man {Ire}–Barakaat {Fr}, by Lope De Vega {Ire}) upstaged her peers to take the G2 St Mark's Basilica Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary at 11-1. Coming off a win in Toulouse's Listed Prix Caravelle last month, the Laura Vanska-trained €10,000 Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale graduate was settled on the rail early by Aurelien Lemaitre tracking the leading duo. Albaugh Family Stables's Catching Freedom (Constitution), the GI Kentucky Derby fourth-place finisher, is slated to enter Saturday's $2 million GI Preakness S. at Pimlico Race Course, trainer Brad Cox said Sunday morning via a 1/ST Racing press release. Cox's initial reaction was not to run the colt back in two weeks after the hard race the GII Louisiana Derby winner had under the Twin Spires, in which he finished less than two lengths behind victorious Mystik Dan (Goldencents). However, Catching Freedom has been training so well at Churchill Downs that Cox felt the 3-year-old deserved another chance at a Triple Crown race. Regular rider Flavien Prat will have the mount. “Obviously we like how he's doing,” Cox said. “It's just eight days after the Derby. It's very important to watch the horse. He has been galloping well. I'm happy with the way he's moving. Tomorrow (Monday) is entry day, and we are going to ship tomorrow. We need to get our ducks in a row, and we feel he's shown us enough. “It's not ideal to run back in two weeks at this level, but that's the way the schedule is. This race provides an opportunity to be very competitive in a Grade 1. We don't want to miss that opportunity as long as he's doing well. The Preakness is a very prestigious race. It's not only a Grade 1 but a classic.” Cox has participated in Old Hilltop's featured race only once before, finishing third with Owendale (Into Mischief) and fourth with Warrior's Charge (Munnings) in the 2019–neither of whom ran in the Derby. He had one of the Preakness favorites last year in MGSW First Mission (Street Sense), only to have that horse scratched the day before the race. “We put a lot of focus on the Kentucky Derby, and that obviously does take away from Preakness a little bit,” the multiple Eclipse winning conditioner said. “It's just not as common to run these horses back in two weeks as maybe it used to be. It basically comes down to how the horse is doing, and we're happy with the way he's training. Based off who we hear is running, he stacks up with that group of horses–bottom line.” Cox said Catching Freedom will leave for Baltimore after training Monday morning. His son, assistant trainer Blake Cox, will oversee preparations at Pimlico. Scheduled 40 minutes after the fillies' Classic, Sunday's G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Poulains offered a dramatic contrast with a heavy downpour greatly affecting the aesthetics at ParisLongchamp and to an extent the ground also. In the event, the race was off 40 minutes en retard due to the thunderstorm before Metropolitan (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}–Alianza {GB}, by Halling) provided another surprise result on the afternoon by overcoming higher-profile peers at 24-1. Unbeaten in two juvenile starts before finishing fifth in the course-and-distance G3 Prix de Fontainebleau last month, the Mario Baratti trainee who races for Peter R Bradley III and Scuderia Scolari was perfectly positioned by Alexis Pouchin in third having been drawn on the rail. Using the cutaway to get up the inside of TDN Rising Star Alcantor (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) with 150 metres remaining, the €78,000 Arqana Deauville October graduate stayed on to deny fellow outsider Dancing Gemini (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) by half a length, with Alcantor a short neck away in third. Putting another piece in the Derby puzzle on Sunday, Ballydoyle's unbeaten Los Angeles (Ire) (Camelot {GB}–Frequential {GB}, by Dansili {GB}) marked his return with a workmanlike but promising win in Leopardstown's G3 Cashel Palace Hotel Derby Trial S. Last seen winning the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, the 4-5 favourite sat off the tempo set by stablemate Euphoric (GB) (Frankel {GB}) under Wayne Lordan and after getting to the front a furlong out stayed on to beat that rival by a length, with the Dermot Weld trainee Taraj (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) a head away in third. Still unbeaten Los Angeles overcomes a steady pace to land the Derby Trial and maintain his unbeaten record. Bouncing back from a return sixth in the seven-furlong G3 Ballylinch Stud “Priory Belle” S. at Leopardstown last month, Juddmonte's illustriously-bred Wendla (GB) (Ulysses {Ire})–Intercontinental {GB}, by Danehill) benefitted from a masterclass from Colin Keane to cause a minor upset in Sunday's G3 Al Shira'aa Racing “Mutamakina” S. over a mile back at that venue. Always at the fore with the pace modest, the Ger Lyons-trained daughter of the operation's high-class Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine led the sprint for home and had enough in hand to hold on from 3/4 of a length from Buttons (Ire) (Kingman {GB}). “She's a lovely honest filly. The ground comes all the same to her, she's handled heavy and she handled that,” Lyons said of the winner, who returned a 7-1 starting price and emulated the win of the same connections' Zarinsk (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) 12 months ago. “I probably had her wrong and Colin had her right. I thought the way the race was run it wasn't going to suit as it turned into a sprint, she's pacier than I gave her credit for. Colin has her as having more speed than I gave her credit for, thankfully he was right. He was in the right place on her and she answered and did it well. If she ends up doing what Zarinsk did last year, we'll be over the moon. There are big races here at the end of the year that we can aim for, the mile race [the G1 Matron Stakes].” A fine ride on the front end from @ctkjockey sees Wendla dictate proceedings and run out a cosy winner of the Group 3 @alshiraaracing "Mutamakina" Stakes for @JuddmonteFarms and trainer Ger Lyons pic.twitter.com/ILpg3Vxqs3 — Leopardstown RC (@LeopardstownRC) May 12, 2024 Sunday, Leopardstown, Ireland AL SHIRA'AA RACING MUTAMAKINA S. After a finish to Sunday's G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches that appeared as a true 80s throwback, it was the world-famous Aga Khan and Sangster silks involved at the death of the ParisLongchamp Classic with the former's livery in front where it mattered on the 31-1 outsider Rouhiya (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Rondonia {Ire}, by Raven's Pass). Continuing the fine form of the Francis-Henri Graffard stable in 2024, the homebred with no previous black-type experience who had been third in the course-and-distance Prix du Louvre conditions event last month was forced to go forward from her draw in stall 10 but was able to retain enough energy to sit behind the leading trio throughout the all-important early stages. Rouhiya, who was becoming her owner-breeder's fifth Pouliches winner, needed to work to get to the long-time leader and 45-1 shot Kathmandu (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) but proved game and genuine for Maxime Guyon as she cut down that rival in the shade of the post. At the line, there was a head between the Aga Khan and Sangster fillies, with a neck separating them and Vespertilio (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) in third. Godolphin's Romantic Style (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), who was sent forward by William Buick from stall 14, probably paid for that when fourth, another short neck away. 33/1 shock as Rouhiya fends off Kathmandu in the French 1000 Guineas for Maxime Guyon! pic.twitter.com/IJXCN3xcue — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) May 12, 2024 Sunday, ParisLongchamp, France EMIRATES POULE D'ESSAI DES POULICHES-G1, €550,000, ParisLongchamp, 5-12, 3yo, f, 8fT, 1:35.99, gd. 1–ROUHIYA (FR), 126, f, 3, by Lope De Vega (Ire) 1st Dam: Rondonia (Ire) (SP-Fr), by Raven's Pass 2nd Dam: Raydiya (Ire), by Marju (Ire) 3rd Dam: Raydaniya (Ire), by In The Wings (GB) 1ST BLACK-TYPE WIN; 1ST GROUP WIN; 1ST GROUP 1 WIN. A black-type assignment is looming on the horizon for Casino Princess (NZ) (Casino Prince) after she capped a consistent formline with victory in Saturday’s Macmillan Accountants (1560m) at Rotorua. The five-year-old daughter of Casino Prince went into Saturday’s race as the winner of three of her nine career starts. She had placed in another four, including all of her three previous appearances in her current preparation. Casino Princess resumed with a third behind Freeze Frame at Matamata in late February, then was runner-up at Tauranga to the subsequent Gr.3 Easter Handicap (1600m) placegetter Chatahoochee. In her last start at Te Rapa on April 14, Casino Princess had a tough three-wide run and rider Tayla Mitchell dropped her whip, but she still finished a close second behind Zantabulous. Saturday’s $35,000 Rating 75 race marked a deserved breakthrough for Casino Princess. She jumped well from the inside gate and was given an economical run by jockey Michael McNab, settling in fourth behind Madame Le Fay, Extortion and Nigella Lane. McNab moved across heels coming up to the home turn and brought Casino Princess cruising up on the outside of Extortion at the top of the straight. McNab released the brakes and Casino Princess quickly opened up a clear lead. Resuming stayer Pacheco stormed home in the last 150m to provide a late scare, but Casino Princess was far enough in front and held on by a long head. “There was a good speed and I just sat behind that, then tracked up,” McNab said. “She got out at the right time and won well. “She’s in solid form. I’ve been annoying the connections for a little while to get on her, and I finally got on her today. I was a little bit surprised by how big she is, but she’s got a good winning attitude.” Trainer Cliff Goss at Arawa Park on Saturday. Photo: Trish Dunell From 10 starts, Casino Princess has now recorded four wins, two seconds and two thirds. She has earned $64,610 for her Tauranga owner-trainer Cliff Goss and co-owner Darryl Heaphy. Goss has now set his sights on a home-track feature on June 22 – the Listed Tauranga Classic (1400m). “I’m very pleased with that,” the remarkable 92-year-old trainer said. “When she galloped at home the other day, I thought she went good enough that day to win a Railway (Gr.1, 1200m), and here we are at Rotorua in May. “There’s a fillies and mares’ race at Tauranga coming up next month, and that’s going to be her next target. She has to go up into open company now. You don’t know how they’ll cope with that until you try them, but I think she can take the step up into that level.” View the full article

Progressive galloper Orlov (NZ) (Sweynesse) made it consecutive victories and three wins in his last five starts when he dashed home near the fence to take out the feature flat race at New Plymouth on Saturday, the Landmark Homes (1800m). The six-year-old son of Sweynesse is raced by a group including his trainer David Haworth, who co-bred him and had produced a career best performance at his last start when taking out a rating 90 2040m contest at Wanganui, in the process downing handy performers Prince Alby and Aljay who featured prominently in the Listed Rotorua Cup (2200m) further north on Saturday when finishing sixth and second respectively in the black type event. Settled towards the rear of the eight-horse field by rider Kate Hercock, Orlov looked to be battling slightly approaching the home bend as Poser, White Noise and pacemaker Our Jumala had settled down to a three-way struggle. Our Jumala shook off the other pair at the 150m and looked set for victory but hadn’t factored in the finishing burst of Orlow who had a full head of steam at that point as he charged along closest to the fence to dash through and win by a half-a-length at the line. Haworth was delighted with the win as he explained the horse was coming into his own following a wind operation earlier in his career. “He is racing really well of late and it was another good performance yesterday (Saturday),” Haworth said. “We had considered going to Rotorua for the Cup after his last victory, but I felt this was a better option rather than travelling all the way up there and maybe striking an unsuitable track. “He has always had ability but he had to have a wind operation and I think in this campaign he is finally learning how to manage it. “He was coming up nicely and then he got a virus that took him a while to get over but now he is right, and you can see that in his form of late. “That could be his last run in this campaign although we might hold on and try to get him to Trentham if the tracks say alright but that could be a longshot at this time of the year. “It was great to win as the race sponsors (Landmark Homes) sponsored one about eight years ago that his mother (Diamond Cut) won so it is quite the coincidence.” Haworth was also looking forward to Diamond Cut foaling down later this year as she is carrying a foal by Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) winner Noverre who will stand for his third season at Waikato Stud for a fee of $10,000+GST in 2024. Orlov is the first foal of Diamond Cut, a daughter of Guillotine, who won four races in a truncated 13-start career that was curtailed by injury. He comes from an extended family that includes multiple Australian Group One winner Stony Bay while he also traces back to outstanding gallopers Romanee Conti, Grand Echezeaux and champion New Zealand two and three-year-old Darci Brahma who went on to a stellar career at stud following his outstanding racetrack performances. Orlov has now won eight of his 32 starts and over $153,000 in prizemoney. View the full article

Two-year-old filly Connello (NZ) (Time Test) produced a powerful home straight sprint in tricky conditions to capture her maiden victory when taking out the AB Electrical Ltd 2YO (1200m) at New Plymouth on Saturday. The Lisa Latta-trained daughter of Time Test was fresh-up off a break following a similar effort at Trentham back in March where she also finished strongly for third behind the promising Sergeant Major. Settled near the rear by rider Chris Dell during the early stages of the race, Connello was more than eight lengths from tearaway pacemaker Pleasing approaching the home bend with Dell hard at work as he urged her to move into contention. Connello picked up the bit nicely early in the run home and quickly joined issue at the 150m before holding out a late challenge from Cambridge visitor Raziah to win by a nose at the line. Latta was pleased to see the way the filly stretched out in the run home as she eyes a black type target for her early in June. “We gave her a freshen up after her Trentham run and the couple of weeks in the paddock has worked well for her,” Latta said. “She is a true little professional and she really found the line nicely and appeared to enjoy the wetter track conditions. “I think she will be a better filly during her three-year-old season but while she is in form we are looking at the Castletown Stakes (Listed, 1200m) for her at Wanganui on the first weekend in June as a nice target.” Dell was all smiles after the victory as he spoke about the performance by his mount. “Race experience always puts them in good stead as she was up against a number of first starters,” he said. “She has been around some good horses lately and has knocked on the door. “She is an honest little horse and she copped the track which is a huge thing going forward.” Bred by Helen Phinney, Tom Johnston and Georgia Brown under their HGT Bloodstock banner along with part-owner David Woodhouse, Connello is out of the Towkay mare Baillieborough and is from a family that traces back to outstanding juvenile galloper Beaufort Lass who was a multiple stakes winner and rated the top filly on the 1981-82 NZ 2YO Free Handicap. High-born sale-ring graduates and some bargain buys liberally dot the G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches field, with some quality homebreds tossed in for good measure. The race could see the unbeaten Italian wunderkind Folgaria add a first Group 1 to her resume, but it could just as easily be another European Guineas for Godolphin with Romantic Style or Rock'n Swing. Coolmore's Content is another in with a chance and only time will tell when the gates fly. ROUHIYA (FR) Lope De Vega (Ire)–Rondonia (Ire) (Raven's Pass) Pedigree/form notes: Rouhiya is Rondonia's second foal and second winner. A granddaughter of stakes winner and G1 Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Cup S. third Raydiya (Ire) (Marju {Ire}), the Aga Khan homebred won at two in Deauville in November. Making her third start at ParisLongchamp in April, she ran third behind the re-opposing Rock'n Swing (GB) (Camelot {GB}) in a conditions event. VESPERTILIO (FR) Night Of Thunder (Ire)–Prudente (Fr) (Dansili {GB}) Sales info: Offered by Ecurie des Monceaux at the Arqana August Yearling Sale, she was purchased by Al Shira'aa Racing for €320,000. Pedigree/form notes: Bred by Monceaux in partnership with the late Lady O'Reilly's Ecurie Skymarc Farm, the May foal was one of the best juvenile fillies in Europe, placing second in the G2 Silver Flash S., before breaking her maiden in the G2 Debutante S. in only her third start. She ended her season 1 1/4 lengths behind Fallen Angel (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) in second in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. in September and has yet to grace the racecourse since. Her dam is a full-sister to dual Group 1 producer Prudenzia (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), as well as a half-sister to Group 3 winner Pacifique (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). If she has progressed, she could be dangerous. ROSE BLOOM (IRE) Lope De Vega (Ire)–Xaarienne (GB) (Xaar {GB}) Sales info: Another sold for €320,000 out of the Arqana August sale, this John O'Connor-bred filly was offered by Ballylinch Stud, and joined the fold of international owner/breeder China Horse Club International. Pedigree/form notes: Second in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac, the dual winner is a half-sister to the Kendargent (Fr) stakes winners Sea The Rose (Ire), who won the G3 Prix Six Perfections, and Xaarino (Fr). Their dam was twice listed placed, and this clan also counts G2 Ribblesdale S. heroine Sahara Slew (Seattle Slew) and G3 Prix Cleopatre winner and G1 Prix de Diane third Sandbar (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) as members. Outpaced when seventh in the G3 Prix de la Grotte in April, she will need to improve. SEE YOU AROUND (IRE) Siyouni (Fr)–Besotted (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB}) Sales info: Offered by La Motteraye Consignment on behalf of breeder C-Squared Investments, this filly did not meet her reserve when she passed through Arqana's ring at €140,000 in August of 2022. Pedigree/form notes: Racing in the silks of Cotton House Bloodstock, the half-sister to G3 Prix des Reservoirs heroine Fancy Me (Ire), by Siyouni's sire Pivotal (GB), is the fourth runner and winner for her dam, who struck at listed level in France and was second in the G2 Prix de Sandringham. Bred in the purple, this filly's Barathea (Ire) second dam Tender Is Thenight (Ire) is a half-sister to former leading sire and three-time Group/Grade 1 winner Last Tycoon (Ire) (Try My Best {Ire}). See You Around, a dual winner and listed placed at two, has already been seen twice this season and enters off a victory in the Listed Prix Aymeri de Mauleon at Toulouse on Apr. 21. This is her first foray into group company. SPARKLING PLENTY (FR) Kingman (GB)–Speralita (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) Sales info: Haras de Capucines consigned this filly on behalf of her breeder, Jean-Pierre-Joseph Dubois, to the Arqana August Sale, but she was a €600,000 buy-back and now races for Dubois. Pedigree/form notes: This filly's dam is a half-sister to Eclipse Champion Grass Mare Stacelita (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}), winner of the G1 Prix de Diane, Beverly D. S, Flower Bowl Invitational S., Prix Vermeille, Prix Saint-Alary and Prix Jean Romanet, all at Group/Grade 1 level. Sent to Japan, Stacelita's subsequent daughter and granddaughter–Soul Stirring (Jpn) (Frankel {GB}) and Stars On Earth (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn})–both captured at least one Japanese fillies' Classic. The Patrice Cottier trainee won three straight to kickstart her career, taking the Listed Prix Delahante by a length at second asking before a four-length conditions win over the Chantilly all-weather this February. Stakes placed again, this time at Saint Cloud in March, this half-sister to G3 Jersey S. winner and Group 1 second Noble Truth (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) was fifth in the La Grotte last month. MINOUSHKA (GB) Starspangledbanner (Aus)–Mouille Point (GB) (Motivator {GB}) Sales info: A product of the SAS Le Thenney/Pearl Champs Elysses breeding programme, this filly was knocked down to Meridian International for €170,000 out of the Arqana October Yearling Sale. Pedigree/form notes: Her second dam, Turning Leaf (GB) (Last Tycoon {Ire}), was third in the G2 German 1000 Guineas, prior to foaling German Group 3 winner Turning Light (Ger) (Fantastic Light). A debut winner, this Ecurie des Charmes runner was a close second in the G3 Prix de la Grotte and could come forward again here. OPERA MUNDI (IRE) Kingman (GB)–Solage (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) Sales info: Bred by Ballylinch Stud and Ecurie des Charmes, she didn't meet her reserve when offered by the former at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale, and was a €220,000 buy-back. Pedigree/form notes: A daughter of Listed Bluebell S. heroine Solage, the Ecurie des Charmes silks-bearer, winner of the Listed Prix Zeddaan at two, was unplaced stepping out in soft ground at Chantilly late last month. Kin to G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud victress Plumania (GB) (Anabaa), Opera Mundi should be sharper for Sunday's test. ROMANTIC STYLE (IRE) Night Of Thunder (Ire)–Sweety Dream (Fr) (Dream Ahead) Sales info: A star pinhook who went from a €240,000 Goffs November foal from Oghill House Stud to Stauffenberg Bloodstock, only to make 550,000gns as a Book 1 yearling at Tattersalls when picked up by Godolphin. Pedigree/form notes: She is a half-sister to stakes winner Are We Dreaming (Ire) (Kendargent {Ire}), while their dam landed the G3 Prix Miesque. Sweety Dream's Exosphere (Aus) half-brother Easter (Fr) won a brace of Grade II races in America and was second in the GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile S. Godolphin already triumphed in a Guineas this term, and this filly, bred by Wansdyke Farms, Sh Bloodstock, J. Burke and Oghill, could give them another. A leading fancy, and enters off a career high with a tally in the G3 Prix Imprudence over subsequent G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas third and 'TDN Rising Star' Ramatuelle (Justify). ROCK'N SWING (GB) Camelot (GB)–Ragsah (Ire) (Shamardal) Pedigree/form notes: The sixth foal and third winner for the group-placed Ragsah, this filly is also a half-sister to GII Goldikova S. third Richmond Avenue (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Her granddam is the multiple group-winning Colorado Dancer (Ire) (Shareef Dancer), twice placed at the highest level and dam of the standout runner Dubai Millennium (GB), the sire of Dubawi (Ire). Unbeaten in two starts at Saint-Cloud at two and at ParisLongchamp in April, this Godolphin homebred is making her stakes debut. CHIC COLOMBINE (FR) Seahenge–Little Hippo (GB) (Halling) Sales info: A €6,000 Arqana December buy-back, this March-foaled filly was reoffered by Haras de la Haie Neuve at the Osarus September Yealring Sale, and brought €1,000 on the bid of MAB Agency. Pedigree/form notes: Bred by Mell Elevages, Ecurie Artsam and Vincent Le Roy, this filly won four of her seven starts in England at two, and capped a career high when claiming the Listed Prix la Camargo by six lengths for trainer George Boughey in mid-March. The Pouliches will be just a handful of days short of two months later, and this relative of G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Bianca Nera (GB) (Salse) should be ready to go. TULIPA CHOPE (FR) Born To Sea (Ire)–Tulipe Rouge (Fr) (Panis) Sales info: Part of the Haras des Faunes draft at the Osarus August Yearling Sale, this Alain Chopard and Cedric Boutin-bred filly caught the eye of Kevin Tavares for €5,000. Pedigree/form notes: She is the fifth foal out of her winning dam and fourth winner. Never worse than third in six starts, this relative of G1 French Oaks heroine Valyra (GB) (Azamour {Ire}) won the G3 Prix des Reservoirs at two and was third to Candala and Minoushka in the Prix de la Grotte. That run should have taken care of any fitness issues and she should be a sharper prospect on Sunday. KATHMANDU (IRE) Showcasing (GB)–Alegra (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) Sales info: Barton Sales consigned this filly to the Tattersalls July Sale last summer, and she brought 50,000gns from Sam Sangster Bloodstock. Pedigree/form notes: Bred by Sir Robert Ogden, the half-sister to stakes winners Pythagoras (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and Blue Gardenia (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) is a great granddaughter of the storied Lanwades blue hen Alouette (GB) (Darshaan {GB}). Successful at two, this fifth winner for Alegra earned her first black-type with a good third in the G3 Nell Gwyn S. in April. There should be more to come. The 2023 G3 Staffordstown Stud S. winner surged late to take fourth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and is likely to continue her upward progress. A baker's dozen go to post in the G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Poulains at ParisLongchamp on Sunday, and the field is fairly evenly matched, homebreds versus sales graduates. Coolmore's G1 National S. hero Henry Longfellow is the highest-rated horse in the field, and he's backed up by 2.4 million gns Tattersalls Book 1 alum and Group 2 winner Diego Velazquez. The home team should field a fierce defence, however, and His Highness The Aga Khan's Keran and Roshvar could both step up to give their breeder his seventh French 2,000 Guineas since 1970, and first since Sendawar (Ire) (Priolo) in 1999. KERAN (FR) Blue Point (Ire)–Kerasona (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}) Pedigree/form notes: The Aga Khan homebred is the fourth winner from as many runners out of his Listed-winning dam, who is in turn a half-sister to three black-type performers, including the G3 Prix du Bois winner Keratiya (Fr) (Iron Mask). Keran won two of his first three starts and ran well on his first try in Pattern company when last seen filling the runner-up spot behind the unbeaten Lazzat (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) in the G3 Prix Djebel. ROSHVAR (FR) Siyouni (Fr)–Roshanara (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) Pedigree/form notes: Like Keran, this colt is an Aga Khan homebred and the third winner from as many runners for his Listed-placed dam, a half-sister to the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac winner Rosanara (Fr) (Sinndar {Ire}). His granddam, the dual Listed winner Rosawa (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}), is a full-sister to the multiple Group 2 winner/Group 1-placed Rajsaman (Fr), the sire of the 2017 winner of this race, Brametot (Ire), who also won the G1 Prix du Jockey Club. Roshvar opened his account on his second start at two and now steps up markedly in grade having returned to action this year with a runner-up finish behind the reopposing Supercooled in a conditions race at Longchamp. ORNE (IRE) Acclamation (GB)–Pellucid (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}) Sales info: Offered by his breeders Rathbarry Stud at Tattersalls October Book 2, he was bought by Charlie Gordon-Watson and owners Al Shaqab for 120,000gns. Pedigree/form notes: The pillar-to-post winner of the G3 Horris Hill S. on his final start at two, he has performed with credit in his four runs this year without managing to get his head back in front. His dam was third in the G3 Dick Poole Fillies' S. and is a half-sister to the G2 Boomerang S. winner and young sire Space Traveller (GB). His third dam is the winning Snow Crystal (Ire) (Kingmambo), a half-sister to the G1 Fillies' Mile winner Crystal Music (Nureyev). BEAUVATIER (FR) Lope De Vega (Ire)–Enchanting Skies (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) Sales info: Bred by Ecurie des Monceaux, Qatar Bloodstock and Barbara Keller, he sold at the Arqana August Sale for €160,000 to trainer Yann Barberot. Pedigree/form notes: This colt earned 'TDN Rising Star' status when making a successful debut at two and was unbeaten until finishing third in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. Runner-up in last month's G3 Prix de Fontainebleau, he is the first foal out of his Listed-placed dam, a half-sister to three other black-type performers, including the G1 Preis von Europa victor Empoli (Ger) (Halling). Elle Danzig (Ger) (Roi Danzig), who won multiple top-level races after completing the G2 Henkel Rennen (German 1,000 Guineas)/G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) double, also features on his page as a half-sister to his third dam, Eirehill (Ire) (Danehill). RAMADAN (FR) Le Havre (Ire)–Raushan (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}) Pedigree/form notes: The Sumbe homebred has stepped up on his two-year-old form in two starts this year with back-to-back wins, landing a Listed race at Saint-Cloud by five lengths and then beating Beauvatier in the Prix de Fontainebleau. His winning dam, a full-sister to the G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine Chinese White (Ire), has also thrown the Listed-winning Rasima (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) from only three foals to race. His granddam, Chiang Mai (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), was a smart performer who won the Blandford S. when it was run as a Group 3, while his third dam is the renowned Eljazzi (Artaius), responsible for the G1 Prix de Diane heroine Rafha (GB) (Kris {GB}), who in turn achieved notoriety as the dam of the successful sires Invincible Spirit (Ire) and Kodiac (GB). METROPOLITAN (FR) Zarak (Fr)–Alianza (GB) (Halling) Sales info: Bred by Stuart McPhee, he sold at the Arqana October Yearling Sale for €78,000 to Alessandro Marconi. Pedigree/form notes: Two from two as a juvenile, he wasn't beaten far despite finishing only fifth on his return to action in the Prix de Fontainebleau. He is the second winner from four runners out of his unraced dam, a half-sister to the Listed-placed Boater (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}). Also unraced was his granddam, Cercle d'Amour (Storm Cat), a full-sister to the Listed-winning Royal Tigress (Storm Cat) and a half-sister to the G3 Norfolk S. winner and G1 Prix Morny runner-up Warm Heart (Diesis {GB}). DANCING GEMINI (IRE) Camelot (GB)–Lady Adelaide (Ire) (Australia {GB}) Pedigree/form notes: The Fishdance homebred showed a high level of form at two, easily winning a Listed race at Doncaster and possibly finding the ground too soft there when finishing fifth in the G1 Futurity Trophy. He is the first runner out of his winning dam and descends from a smart French family. His third dam is the Listed-winning Red Stella (Fr) (Rainbow Quest), a full-sister to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud hero Special Quest (Fr) and a half-sister to the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte winner Moiava (Fr) (Bering {GB}). Their dam, Mona Stella (Nureyev), a half-sister to the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Dancing Maid (Fr) (Lyphard), won the Prix de l'Opera when it was run as a Group 2. SUPERCOOLED (IRE) Lope De Vega (Ire)–Liquid Amber (Kitten's Joy) Pedigree/form notes: A homebred from the Niarchos Family's Flaxman Stables Ireland, he looked a useful colt when beating Roshvar to gain his second career win at Longchamp. His dam won the G3 Flame Of Tara S. and is out of Pachattack (Pulpit), who was a dual Listed winner in Britain before moving to the US where she won a pair of Grade III races and was twice runner-up at the top level. Pachattack also produced the winning Dilmun (War Front), the dam of Friday's G2 Huxley S. winner Passenger (Ulysses {Ire}). PUCHKINE (FR) Starspangledbanner (Aus)–Vadyska (Ire) (So You Think {NZ}) Pedigree/form notes: This 'TDN Rising Star' met with his first defeat in three starts for owner/breeder Alain Jathiere when recently filling the runner-up spot in a Listed race at Toulouse. He is the second winner from three runners out of his unraced dam, a half-sister to the Listed-winning Romina Power (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}). His granddam is the Rock Of Gibraltar (Ire) mare Rockatella (Ire), who won twice at Listed level, while his fourth dam is Repeat Warning (GB) (Warning {GB}), a half-sister to the G1 Irish Champion S. winner Cezanne (GB) (Ajdal). HENRY LONGFELLOW (IRE) Dubawi (Ire)–Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) Pedigree/form notes: The Coolmore homebred went unbeaten in three starts as a two-year-old, earning 'TDN Rising Star' status on debut and later proving himself a top-class prospect in winning the G1 National S. by five lengths. Henry Longfellow is bred in the purple as the second foal and first runner out of a mare whose haul of seven Group 1 wins included the 1,000 Guineas and Oaks. Her dam, Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), who struck in the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Matron S. for the same stable, produced only Galileos for Coolmore and to great effect. They included another Oaks winner in Tuesday (Ire), who went on to win the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, plus the G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Empress Josephine (Ire) and G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial winner Kissed by Angels (Ire). EBEN SHADDAD Calyx (GB)–Galileo's Lady (Galileo {Ire}) Sales info: Bred by Charles Fipke, he was a $100,000 Keeneland September yearling before being bought by Najd Stud at the Arqana Breeze-up Sale for €190,000. Pedigree/form notes: This 'TDN Rising Star' performed with credit on his return to action when filling the runner-up spot in the G3 Craven S., having ended his two-year-old campaign with a solid third in the G1 Dewhurst S. at the same course. His unraced dam is a half-sister to five winners, including the GII Nassau S. heroine Lady Speightspeare (Speightstown) and Ready Lady (More Than Ready), who finished third in the GII Dance Smartly S. for owner/breeder Fipke. Eben Shaddad's granddam, the GII New York S. winner Lady Shakespeare (Theatrical {Ire}), was a smart performer for Fipke in her own right. So too was his third dam, Lady Shirl (That's A Nice), who won the GI Flower Bowl H. and also produced the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Perfect Shirl (Perfect Soul {Ire}), herself dam of the GI Maker's Mark Mile S. victor Shirl's Speight (Speightstown). ALCANTOR (FR) New Bay (GB)–Bianca De Medici (GB) (Medicean {GB}) Sales info: Bred by SCEA du Grand Chene, he was offered by Haras du Hoguenet as a foal at Arqana, where he sold to owner Baron Edouard de Rothschild's Haras de Meautry for €180,000. Pedigree/form notes: Another 'TDN Rising Star', he managed only sixth when sent off favourite for the Craven, but his two-year-old form, which included a runner-up finish in the G1 Criterium International, entitles him to the utmost respect. He is the sixth winner from as many runners out of his winning dam–a half-sister to the Hungarian champion Thunder Teddington (GB) (Halling)–with the others including the G2 Oppenheim-Union-Rennen victor Boscaccio (Ger) (Mount Nelson {GB}). The descendants of his third dam, Trevillari (Riverman)–a full-sister to the G1 Prix Saint-Alary victrix Treble–include the dual G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}, while his fourth dam Trevilla (Lyphard) is an unraced half-sister to the great Triptych (Riverman). DIEGO VELAZQUEZ (IRE) Frankel (GB)–Sweepstake (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) Sales info: Bred by Epona Bloodstock Ltd, he sold to MV Magnier and White Birch Farm for 2.4 million gns at Tattersalls October Book 1. Pedigree/form notes: Like Dancing Gemini, he seemed to find the ground too soft in the Futurity Trophy having previously looked a colt potentially out of the top drawer in winning his first two starts, earning 'TDN Rising Star' status on debut before following up in the G2 Champions Juvenile S. at the expense of Capulet (Justify). That appeals as solid form after the runner-up's Listed Dee S. win and Diego Velazquez certainly has plenty to recommend him on pedigree as a sibling to the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud victor Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}), plus Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who gained the sixth black-type victory of his career in Thursday's G3 Ormonde S. at Chester. Their dam is a Listed winner out of the Suave Dancer mare Dust Flicker (GB), herself a full-sister to the G3 Prix de la Nonette victrix Dust Dancer (GB). Dust Dancer, in turn, is the granddam of G1 Phoenix S.-winning sire Zoffany (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) and G3 Bengough S. winner Projection (GB) (Acclamation {GB}).
