High-born sale-ring graduates and some bargain buys liberally dot the G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches field, with some quality homebreds tossed in for good measure. The race could see the unbeaten Italian wunderkind Folgaria add a first Group 1 to her resume, but it could just as easily be another European Guineas for Godolphin with Romantic Style or Rock'n Swing. Coolmore's Content is another in with a chance and only time will tell when the gates fly. ROUHIYA (FR) Lope De Vega (Ire)–Rondonia (Ire) (Raven's Pass) Pedigree/form notes: Rouhiya is Rondonia's second foal and second winner. A granddaughter of stakes winner and G1 Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Cup S. third Raydiya (Ire) (Marju {Ire}), the Aga Khan homebred won at two in Deauville in November. Making her third start at ParisLongchamp in April, she ran third behind the re-opposing Rock'n Swing (GB) (Camelot {GB}) in a conditions event. VESPERTILIO (FR) Night Of Thunder (Ire)–Prudente (Fr) (Dansili {GB}) Sales info: Offered by Ecurie des Monceaux at the Arqana August Yearling Sale, she was purchased by Al Shira'aa Racing for €320,000. Pedigree/form notes: Bred by Monceaux in partnership with the late Lady O'Reilly's Ecurie Skymarc Farm, the May foal was one of the best juvenile fillies in Europe, placing second in the G2 Silver Flash S., before breaking her maiden in the G2 Debutante S. in only her third start. She ended her season 1 1/4 lengths behind Fallen Angel (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) in second in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. in September and has yet to grace the racecourse since. Her dam is a full-sister to dual Group 1 producer Prudenzia (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), as well as a half-sister to Group 3 winner Pacifique (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). If she has progressed, she could be dangerous. ROSE BLOOM (IRE) Lope De Vega (Ire)–Xaarienne (GB) (Xaar {GB}) Sales info: Another sold for €320,000 out of the Arqana August sale, this John O'Connor-bred filly was offered by Ballylinch Stud, and joined the fold of international owner/breeder China Horse Club International. Pedigree/form notes: Second in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac, the dual winner is a half-sister to the Kendargent (Fr) stakes winners Sea The Rose (Ire), who won the G3 Prix Six Perfections, and Xaarino (Fr). Their dam was twice listed placed, and this clan also counts G2 Ribblesdale S. heroine Sahara Slew (Seattle Slew) and G3 Prix Cleopatre winner and G1 Prix de Diane third Sandbar (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) as members. Outpaced when seventh in the G3 Prix de la Grotte in April, she will need to improve. SEE YOU AROUND (IRE) Siyouni (Fr)–Besotted (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB}) Sales info: Offered by La Motteraye Consignment on behalf of breeder C-Squared Investments, this filly did not meet her reserve when she passed through Arqana's ring at €140,000 in August of 2022. Pedigree/form notes: Racing in the silks of Cotton House Bloodstock, the half-sister to G3 Prix des Reservoirs heroine Fancy Me (Ire), by Siyouni's sire Pivotal (GB), is the fourth runner and winner for her dam, who struck at listed level in France and was second in the G2 Prix de Sandringham. Bred in the purple, this filly's Barathea (Ire) second dam Tender Is Thenight (Ire) is a half-sister to former leading sire and three-time Group/Grade 1 winner Last Tycoon (Ire) (Try My Best {Ire}). See You Around, a dual winner and listed placed at two, has already been seen twice this season and enters off a victory in the Listed Prix Aymeri de Mauleon at Toulouse on Apr. 21. This is her first foray into group company. SPARKLING PLENTY (FR) Kingman (GB)–Speralita (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) Sales info: Haras de Capucines consigned this filly on behalf of her breeder, Jean-Pierre-Joseph Dubois, to the Arqana August Sale, but she was a €600,000 buy-back and now races for Dubois. Pedigree/form notes: This filly's dam is a half-sister to Eclipse Champion Grass Mare Stacelita (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}), winner of the G1 Prix de Diane, Beverly D. S, Flower Bowl Invitational S., Prix Vermeille, Prix Saint-Alary and Prix Jean Romanet, all at Group/Grade 1 level. Sent to Japan, Stacelita's subsequent daughter and granddaughter–Soul Stirring (Jpn) (Frankel {GB}) and Stars On Earth (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn})–both captured at least one Japanese fillies' Classic. The Patrice Cottier trainee won three straight to kickstart her career, taking the Listed Prix Delahante by a length at second asking before a four-length conditions win over the Chantilly all-weather this February. Stakes placed again, this time at Saint Cloud in March, this half-sister to G3 Jersey S. winner and Group 1 second Noble Truth (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) was fifth in the La Grotte last month. MINOUSHKA (GB) Starspangledbanner (Aus)–Mouille Point (GB) (Motivator {GB}) Sales info: A product of the SAS Le Thenney/Pearl Champs Elysses breeding programme, this filly was knocked down to Meridian International for €170,000 out of the Arqana October Yearling Sale. Pedigree/form notes: Her second dam, Turning Leaf (GB) (Last Tycoon {Ire}), was third in the G2 German 1000 Guineas, prior to foaling German Group 3 winner Turning Light (Ger) (Fantastic Light). A debut winner, this Ecurie des Charmes runner was a close second in the G3 Prix de la Grotte and could come forward again here. OPERA MUNDI (IRE) Kingman (GB)–Solage (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) Sales info: Bred by Ballylinch Stud and Ecurie des Charmes, she didn't meet her reserve when offered by the former at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale, and was a €220,000 buy-back. Pedigree/form notes: A daughter of Listed Bluebell S. heroine Solage, the Ecurie des Charmes silks-bearer, winner of the Listed Prix Zeddaan at two, was unplaced stepping out in soft ground at Chantilly late last month. Kin to G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud victress Plumania (GB) (Anabaa), Opera Mundi should be sharper for Sunday's test. ROMANTIC STYLE (IRE) Night Of Thunder (Ire)–Sweety Dream (Fr) (Dream Ahead) Sales info: A star pinhook who went from a €240,000 Goffs November foal from Oghill House Stud to Stauffenberg Bloodstock, only to make 550,000gns as a Book 1 yearling at Tattersalls when picked up by Godolphin. Pedigree/form notes: She is a half-sister to stakes winner Are We Dreaming (Ire) (Kendargent {Ire}), while their dam landed the G3 Prix Miesque. Sweety Dream's Exosphere (Aus) half-brother Easter (Fr) won a brace of Grade II races in America and was second in the GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile S. Godolphin already triumphed in a Guineas this term, and this filly, bred by Wansdyke Farms, Sh Bloodstock, J. Burke and Oghill, could give them another. A leading fancy, and enters off a career high with a tally in the G3 Prix Imprudence over subsequent G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas third and 'TDN Rising Star' Ramatuelle (Justify). ROCK'N SWING (GB) Camelot (GB)–Ragsah (Ire) (Shamardal) Pedigree/form notes: The sixth foal and third winner for the group-placed Ragsah, this filly is also a half-sister to GII Goldikova S. third Richmond Avenue (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Her granddam is the multiple group-winning Colorado Dancer (Ire) (Shareef Dancer), twice placed at the highest level and dam of the standout runner Dubai Millennium (GB), the sire of Dubawi (Ire). Unbeaten in two starts at Saint-Cloud at two and at ParisLongchamp in April, this Godolphin homebred is making her stakes debut. CHIC COLOMBINE (FR) Seahenge–Little Hippo (GB) (Halling) Sales info: A €6,000 Arqana December buy-back, this March-foaled filly was reoffered by Haras de la Haie Neuve at the Osarus September Yealring Sale, and brought €1,000 on the bid of MAB Agency. Pedigree/form notes: Bred by Mell Elevages, Ecurie Artsam and Vincent Le Roy, this filly won four of her seven starts in England at two, and capped a career high when claiming the Listed Prix la Camargo by six lengths for trainer George Boughey in mid-March. The Pouliches will be just a handful of days short of two months later, and this relative of G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Bianca Nera (GB) (Salse) should be ready to go. TULIPA CHOPE (FR) Born To Sea (Ire)–Tulipe Rouge (Fr) (Panis) Sales info: Part of the Haras des Faunes draft at the Osarus August Yearling Sale, this Alain Chopard and Cedric Boutin-bred filly caught the eye of Kevin Tavares for €5,000. Pedigree/form notes: She is the fifth foal out of her winning dam and fourth winner. Never worse than third in six starts, this relative of G1 French Oaks heroine Valyra (GB) (Azamour {Ire}) won the G3 Prix des Reservoirs at two and was third to Candala and Minoushka in the Prix de la Grotte. That run should have taken care of any fitness issues and she should be a sharper prospect on Sunday. KATHMANDU (IRE) Showcasing (GB)–Alegra (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) Sales info: Barton Sales consigned this filly to the Tattersalls July Sale last summer, and she brought 50,000gns from Sam Sangster Bloodstock. Pedigree/form notes: Bred by Sir Robert Ogden, the half-sister to stakes winners Pythagoras (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and Blue Gardenia (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) is a great granddaughter of the storied Lanwades blue hen Alouette (GB) (Darshaan {GB}). Successful at two, this fifth winner for Alegra earned her first black-type with a good third in the G3 Nell Gwyn S. in April. There should be more to come. FOLGARIA (IRE) Due Diligence–Full Moon Fever (Azamour {Ire}) Sales info: Offered by The Castlebridge Consignment on behalf of Turlough Boylan, she was sold for €10,000 out of the Tattersalls Ireland Premier Yearling Sale to Stefano Botti Turf. Pedigree/form notes: The first winner and fourth foal of her dual-winning dam, Folgaria is kin to group winner Amore Hass (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) and beginning with her second dam, Hasaiyda (Ire) (Hector Protector), hails from a classy Aga Khan family. Flawless in five starts and battle-hardened, the queen of the Italian juveniles added the G3 Dubai Duty Free S. in her three-year-old bow, beating subsequent 1,000 Guineas winner Elmalka (GB). CONTENT (IRE) Galileo (Ire)–Mecca's Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) Pedigree/form notes: She is the fourth foal of the sprinting star Mecca's Angel, herself a full-sister to the multiple group winner and sire Markaz (Ire), who won the G1 Nunthorpe S. twice. The Coolmore homebred has yet to be tested at three, but Aidan O'Brien is no stranger to getting his horses ready without a prep and won this race in 2001 with Rose Gypsy (GB) (Green Desert). The 2023 G3 Staffordstown Stud S. winner surged late to take fourth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and is likely to continue her upward progress. LOUISE PROCTER (FR) Siyouni (Fr)–Create A Dream (Oasis Dream {GB}) Sales info: Haras de Saint Pair consigned this filly to the Arqana August Sale, where she made €360,000 on the bid of Oceanic Bloodstock on behalf of Peter Brant's White Birch Farm. Pedigree/form notes: A half-sister to Phosphorescence (Fr) (City Of Light), this 'TDN Rising Star' is out of the Chelsey Flower S. winner Create A Dream and her granddam is listed winner Anabaa's Creation (Ire) (Anabaa), second in the GI Clement L. Hirsch S. and third in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary. This is the extended family of the top broodmare Starlet's Sister (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), as Anabaa's Creation is her half-sister. Bred by St Elias Stables, LLC, the bay has three wins from three runs to her name, her latest over the Chantilly all-weather at the end of March, but has yet to face black-type company. A baker's dozen go to post in the G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Poulains at ParisLongchamp on Sunday, and the field is fairly evenly matched, homebreds versus sales graduates. Coolmore's G1 National S. hero Henry Longfellow is the highest-rated horse in the field, and he's backed up by 2.4 million gns Tattersalls Book 1 alum and Group 2 winner Diego Velazquez. The home team should field a fierce defence, however, and His Highness The Aga Khan's Keran and Roshvar could both step up to give their breeder his seventh French 2,000 Guineas since 1970, and first since Sendawar (Ire) (Priolo) in 1999. KERAN (FR) Blue Point (Ire)–Kerasona (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}) Pedigree/form notes: The Aga Khan homebred is the fourth winner from as many runners out of his Listed-winning dam, who is in turn a half-sister to three black-type performers, including the G3 Prix du Bois winner Keratiya (Fr) (Iron Mask). Keran won two of his first three starts and ran well on his first try in Pattern company when last seen filling the runner-up spot behind the unbeaten Lazzat (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) in the G3 Prix Djebel. ROSHVAR (FR) Siyouni (Fr)–Roshanara (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) Pedigree/form notes: Like Keran, this colt is an Aga Khan homebred and the third winner from as many runners for his Listed-placed dam, a half-sister to the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac winner Rosanara (Fr) (Sinndar {Ire}). His granddam, the dual Listed winner Rosawa (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}), is a full-sister to the multiple Group 2 winner/Group 1-placed Rajsaman (Fr), the sire of the 2017 winner of this race, Brametot (Ire), who also won the G1 Prix du Jockey Club. Roshvar opened his account on his second start at two and now steps up markedly in grade having returned to action this year with a runner-up finish behind the reopposing Supercooled in a conditions race at Longchamp. ORNE (IRE) Acclamation (GB)–Pellucid (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}) Sales info: Offered by his breeders Rathbarry Stud at Tattersalls October Book 2, he was bought by Charlie Gordon-Watson and owners Al Shaqab for 120,000gns. Pedigree/form notes: The pillar-to-post winner of the G3 Horris Hill S. on his final start at two, he has performed with credit in his four runs this year without managing to get his head back in front. His dam was third in the G3 Dick Poole Fillies' S. and is a half-sister to the G2 Boomerang S. winner and young sire Space Traveller (GB). His third dam is the winning Snow Crystal (Ire) (Kingmambo), a half-sister to the G1 Fillies' Mile winner Crystal Music (Nureyev). BEAUVATIER (FR) Lope De Vega (Ire)–Enchanting Skies (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) Sales info: Bred by Ecurie des Monceaux, Qatar Bloodstock and Barbara Keller, he sold at the Arqana August Sale for €160,000 to trainer Yann Barberot. Pedigree/form notes: This colt earned 'TDN Rising Star' status when making a successful debut at two and was unbeaten until finishing third in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. Runner-up in last month's G3 Prix de Fontainebleau, he is the first foal out of his Listed-placed dam, a half-sister to three other black-type performers, including the G1 Preis von Europa victor Empoli (Ger) (Halling). Elle Danzig (Ger) (Roi Danzig), who won multiple top-level races after completing the G2 Henkel Rennen (German 1,000 Guineas)/G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) double, also features on his page as a half-sister to his third dam, Eirehill (Ire) (Danehill). RAMADAN (FR) Le Havre (Ire)–Raushan (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}) Pedigree/form notes: The Sumbe homebred has stepped up on his two-year-old form in two starts this year with back-to-back wins, landing a Listed race at Saint-Cloud by five lengths and then beating Beauvatier in the Prix de Fontainebleau. His winning dam, a full-sister to the G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine Chinese White (Ire), has also thrown the Listed-winning Rasima (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) from only three foals to race. His granddam, Chiang Mai (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), was a smart performer who won the Blandford S. when it was run as a Group 3, while his third dam is the renowned Eljazzi (Artaius), responsible for the G1 Prix de Diane heroine Rafha (GB) (Kris {GB}), who in turn achieved notoriety as the dam of the successful sires Invincible Spirit (Ire) and Kodiac (GB). METROPOLITAN (FR) Zarak (Fr)–Alianza (GB) (Halling) Sales info: Bred by Stuart McPhee, he sold at the Arqana October Yearling Sale for €78,000 to Alessandro Marconi. Pedigree/form notes: Two from two as a juvenile, he wasn't beaten far despite finishing only fifth on his return to action in the Prix de Fontainebleau. He is the second winner from four runners out of his unraced dam, a half-sister to the Listed-placed Boater (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}). Also unraced was his granddam, Cercle d'Amour (Storm Cat), a full-sister to the Listed-winning Royal Tigress (Storm Cat) and a half-sister to the G3 Norfolk S. winner and G1 Prix Morny runner-up Warm Heart (Diesis {GB}). DANCING GEMINI (IRE) Camelot (GB)–Lady Adelaide (Ire) (Australia {GB}) Pedigree/form notes: The Fishdance homebred showed a high level of form at two, easily winning a Listed race at Doncaster and possibly finding the ground too soft there when finishing fifth in the G1 Futurity Trophy. He is the first runner out of his winning dam and descends from a smart French family. His third dam is the Listed-winning Red Stella (Fr) (Rainbow Quest), a full-sister to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud hero Special Quest (Fr) and a half-sister to the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte winner Moiava (Fr) (Bering {GB}). Their dam, Mona Stella (Nureyev), a half-sister to the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Dancing Maid (Fr) (Lyphard), won the Prix de l'Opera when it was run as a Group 2. SUPERCOOLED (IRE) Lope De Vega (Ire)–Liquid Amber (Kitten's Joy) Pedigree/form notes: A homebred from the Niarchos Family's Flaxman Stables Ireland, he looked a useful colt when beating Roshvar to gain his second career win at Longchamp. His dam won the G3 Flame Of Tara S. and is out of Pachattack (Pulpit), who was a dual Listed winner in Britain before moving to the US where she won a pair of Grade III races and was twice runner-up at the top level. Pachattack also produced the winning Dilmun (War Front), the dam of Friday's G2 Huxley S. winner Passenger (Ulysses {Ire}). PUCHKINE (FR) Starspangledbanner (Aus)–Vadyska (Ire) (So You Think {NZ}) Pedigree/form notes: This 'TDN Rising Star' met with his first defeat in three starts for owner/breeder Alain Jathiere when recently filling the runner-up spot in a Listed race at Toulouse. He is the second winner from three runners out of his unraced dam, a half-sister to the Listed-winning Romina Power (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}). His granddam is the Rock Of Gibraltar (Ire) mare Rockatella (Ire), who won twice at Listed level, while his fourth dam is Repeat Warning (GB) (Warning {GB}), a half-sister to the G1 Irish Champion S. winner Cezanne (GB) (Ajdal). HENRY LONGFELLOW (IRE) Dubawi (Ire)–Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) Pedigree/form notes: The Coolmore homebred went unbeaten in three starts as a two-year-old, earning 'TDN Rising Star' status on debut and later proving himself a top-class prospect in winning the G1 National S. by five lengths. Henry Longfellow is bred in the purple as the second foal and first runner out of a mare whose haul of seven Group 1 wins included the 1,000 Guineas and Oaks. Her dam, Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), who struck in the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Matron S. for the same stable, produced only Galileos for Coolmore and to great effect. They included another Oaks winner in Tuesday (Ire), who went on to win the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, plus the G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Empress Josephine (Ire) and G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial winner Kissed by Angels (Ire). EBEN SHADDAD Calyx (GB)–Galileo's Lady (Galileo {Ire}) Sales info: Bred by Charles Fipke, he was a $100,000 Keeneland September yearling before being bought by Najd Stud at the Arqana Breeze-up Sale for €190,000. Pedigree/form notes: This 'TDN Rising Star' performed with credit on his return to action when filling the runner-up spot in the G3 Craven S., having ended his two-year-old campaign with a solid third in the G1 Dewhurst S. at the same course. His unraced dam is a half-sister to five winners, including the GII Nassau S. heroine Lady Speightspeare (Speightstown) and Ready Lady (More Than Ready), who finished third in the GII Dance Smartly S. for owner/breeder Fipke. Eben Shaddad's granddam, the GII New York S. winner Lady Shakespeare (Theatrical {Ire}), was a smart performer for Fipke in her own right. So too was his third dam, Lady Shirl (That's A Nice), who won the GI Flower Bowl H. and also produced the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Perfect Shirl (Perfect Soul {Ire}), herself dam of the GI Maker's Mark Mile S. victor Shirl's Speight (Speightstown). ALCANTOR (FR) New Bay (GB)–Bianca De Medici (GB) (Medicean {GB}) Sales info: Bred by SCEA du Grand Chene, he was offered by Haras du Hoguenet as a foal at Arqana, where he sold to owner Baron Edouard de Rothschild's Haras de Meautry for €180,000. Pedigree/form notes: Another 'TDN Rising Star', he managed only sixth when sent off favourite for the Craven, but his two-year-old form, which included a runner-up finish in the G1 Criterium International, entitles him to the utmost respect. He is the sixth winner from as many runners out of his winning dam–a half-sister to the Hungarian champion Thunder Teddington (GB) (Halling)–with the others including the G2 Oppenheim-Union-Rennen victor Boscaccio (Ger) (Mount Nelson {GB}). The descendants of his third dam, Trevillari (Riverman)–a full-sister to the G1 Prix Saint-Alary victrix Treble–include the dual G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}, while his fourth dam Trevilla (Lyphard) is an unraced half-sister to the great Triptych (Riverman). DIEGO VELAZQUEZ (IRE) Frankel (GB)–Sweepstake (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) Sales info: Bred by Epona Bloodstock Ltd, he sold to MV Magnier and White Birch Farm for 2.4 million gns at Tattersalls October Book 1. Pedigree/form notes: Like Dancing Gemini, he seemed to find the ground too soft in the Futurity Trophy having previously looked a colt potentially out of the top drawer in winning his first two starts, earning 'TDN Rising Star' status on debut before following up in the G2 Champions Juvenile S. at the expense of Capulet (Justify). That appeals as solid form after the runner-up's Listed Dee S. win and Diego Velazquez certainly has plenty to recommend him on pedigree as a sibling to the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud victor Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}), plus Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who gained the sixth black-type victory of his career in Thursday's G3 Ormonde S. at Chester. Their dam is a Listed winner out of the Suave Dancer mare Dust Flicker (GB), herself a full-sister to the G3 Prix de la Nonette victrix Dust Dancer (GB). Dust Dancer, in turn, is the granddam of G1 Phoenix S.-winning sire Zoffany (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) and G3 Bengough S. winner Projection (GB) (Acclamation {GB}). GABALDON (c, 2, Gone Astray–Valuable Miss, by Value Plus) upset the Royal Palm Juvenile at odds of 16-1 Saturday to earn a bid to Royal Ascot. Part of a pace duel up front, the Jose D'Angelo trainee had the most left to offer down the lane and the top pair had opened up enough of a gap back to the field that Gabaldon was able to hang on to secure the win at first asking. By Mike Love Betterthandiva is one of a few horses looking to scrape into the final of the Canterbury Plains Challenge Series as the 10th and final heat takes place at Ashburton today. Orari trainer Lionel Dobbs, with wife Janine, are confident the six year old Betterthancheddar mare will acquit herself well today. “I think she’s ready for it”, said Janine Dobbs. “She’s been working really well and she’s come through her last run pretty good. She should be up with them today provided she gets a good run and everything goes to plan.” Betterthandiva currently sits 15th on the table, with the likes of Kink, Kennedy and Fernz Goldy all looking to secure spots in the top 14 to make the final. “It would be great (to make the final) Lionel’s been training for a few years now and we haven’t had a winner (in the harness code). We do well with the gallopers, but the trotters are a different story.” Dobbs has had 1 placing from 169 starters to the races in the harness code when Pocket Call ran third back in 2019 at Forbury Park. “We’ve got a trotter Just Charlie who qualified a couple of weeks ago who will probably race at Timaru (May 26th) and a Sky Major who we like that is just working up nicely. Plus we have 5 gallopers in work, one of which will race next week at Riccarton. It’s a big enough team.” Betterthandiva has been with Dobbs for her previous six races, which includes three fourths. “She was a bit crook when we first got her. A bad virus and a respiratory infection. So it’s taken a while to get her back, but she loves life at the moment.” Betterthandiva will be driven by John Dunn who has a busy book of 8 drives today. The final will be run at Addington on Friday May 17th for a stake of $30,000 from the 2600m (mobile) while a consolation will be run at Rangiora on May 19th for a stake of $12,500 over the same distance. Racing commences today from 12:09pm. View the full article

Leading Darwin jockey Jarrod Todd celebrating victory aboard the Gary Clarke-trained Spaceship, formerly trained by Robert Heathcote in Brisbane, at Fannie Bay on Saturday. Picture: Caroline Camilleri (Fotofinish Racepix) Trainer Gary Clarke (46 wins) and jockey Jarrod Todd (40) are almost certain to defend their Top End and Country premierships this season. Clarke, the leading trainer for 11 years, and Todd, the top jockey for past four years, sealed a winning treble at Darwin on Saturday. Influential Jack ($3.70) saluted for Clarke at the 13th attempt over 1300m (0-70), Spaceship the $1.40 bookmaker favourite, made it two wins from two Top End starts over 1200m (BM76), and Patriotic King ($3) – Fannie Bay’s 1100m track record holder – prevailed over 1100m (0-64). That’s 13 wins from the last five meetings for Clarke, while it’s eight wins from the past three meetings for Todd. Phil Cole and apprentice Emma Lines, who sit in second place, combined to win the other two races with debutante Moorestown ($2.90 fav) over 1300m (0-58) and Miami Vice ($2.35 fav) in an 1100m maiden. Cole (23) and Lines (22) are likely to finish second behind Clarke and Todd come July 31. Influential Jack, a seven-year-old gelding by Epaulette, shared the early lead with Cole’s Soul Spirit and Chloe Baxter’s Swing With Junior – they were six lengths clear at the 1000m. Sitting three deep, Influential Jack eased back into third place, but once turning for home, he pounced before overcoming Soul Spirit ($2.45 fav) by 0.7 lengths. Chris Pollard’s A Big Chance ($26) wasn’t a factor passing the 600m, but rallied late to finish a distant third. Spaceship, a four-year-old gelding by Invader, over-raced in third place passing the 800m as Cole’s Star Magnum, who started poorly, and Clarke’s Bel’s Banner held sway out in front. Swinging for home at the 350m, Spaceship – formerly trained by Robert Heathcote at Eagle Farm – had his mind back on racing before winning by 3.4 lengths from Bel’s Banner ($6) and Star Magnum ($4). Patriotic King, a five-year-old gelding by Starspangledbanner, has been a consistent performer for Clarke, but he hadn’t won since Melbourne Cup Day. Kicking clear at the 1000m, Patriotic King was six lengths clear at the 200m before tiring to finish 2.5 lengths ahead of Cole’s Exceedingly Magic ($12) and Tayarn Halter’s Raffalli ($7). Moorestown, a four-year-old gelding by Shalaa, formerly of NSW, was camped three deep with fellow leaders Awen, a stablemate, and Clarke’s Extreme Emotion. Hitting the front at the final bend, Moorestown went on to claim a tremendous win by 1.7 lengths from Kevin Lamprecht’s Sweet As Scandi ($13) and Extreme Emotion ($7). Miami Vice, a three-year-old gelding by Shalaa, was a first up third in a 1000m maiden in April after leaving Victoria. Although camped on the fence after jumping from pole position on Saturday, he had three rivals for company out in front passing the 900m. Halter’s Ibegood and Pollard’s NT debutante Call It A Loan, sitting three and four deep, led narrowly from Miami Vice and Baxter’s Siberian Larch at the top corner. Approaching the home turn, Miami Vice, who never left the fence, made ground before powering away at the 300m to sink first-starter Ibegood ($17) and Clarke’s Nassau County ($2.70), who pipped Call It A Loan for third, by 5.7 lengths. What Muswellbrook Races Where Muswellbrook Race Club – Skellatar Park, 15 Racecourse Rd, Muswellbrook NSW 2333 When Monday, May 13, 2024 First Race 11:45am AEST Visit Dabble The new week of racing gets underway at Muswellbrook on Monday afternoon, with a competitive nine-race program set for decision. The rail is out +3m between the 1000m to 300m, while the remainder is in the true. Despite some drying conditions on the day, punters should expect the surface to be rated a Heavy 8 for the first race at 11:45am local time. Muswellbrook Best Bet: Junebug Junebug didn’t bother the judge in four starts in France before arriving at the Annabel Neasham barn, but her barrier trials have been impressive leading into maiden contest. She looks to have acclimatized well to Australian conditions, with her most recent jump-out catching the eye at Warwick Farm on April 26 when cruising away to score by 1.7 lengths. The 1280m could prove to be short of her best trip, but at the $5.00 on offer with online bookmakers, Junebug is worth a speck as she seeks to break her maiden status. Best Bet Race 4 – #8 Junebug (8) 4yo Mare | T: Annabel Neasham | J: Heavelon Van Der Hoven (57kg) +400 with Neds Next Best at Muswellbrook: Bambi Belle Bambi Belle was beaten as a short-priced commodity last start at Wagga on May 2 but appears set to peak third-up into the campaign. The daughter of Ribchester was game in defeat, however, chasing hard to the wire to go down by 1.4 lengths. The margin back to fourth was significant and punters should be willing to trust the form. Watch for Jean Van Overmeire to take luck out pf the equation as Bambi Belle attempts to make every post a winner at Muswellbrook to shirk the maiden tag. Next Best Race 2 – #4 Bambi Belle (1) 3yo Filly | T: Joseph Ible | J: Jean Van Overmeire (55kg) +220 with PlayUp Best Value at Muswellbrook: Choice Witness Choice Witness hasn’t been back in the winners’ enclosure since her maiden win at Dubbo on January 1. Since that electrifying 4.2-length victory, the daughter of Showtime found the minor money on back-to-back occasions before powering through the line in her most recent start at Grafton on April 30. She can sit closer in the running from barrier six in this Class 1 affair, and if Choice Witness can produce her brilliant best, the Brett Cavanough-trained filly can finally earn career win number two. Best Value Race 6 – #8 Choice Witness (6) 3yo Filly | T: Brett Cavanough | J: JBraith Nock (55kg) +800 with Dabble Monday quaddie tips – Muswellbrook Races Muswellbrook quadrella selections Monday, May 13, 2024 2-3-6-8 1-2-5-7-8 2-4-6-11 1-5-6-8-10 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article

Coming from off the pace in her afternoon debut, BULLET (f, 2, War Front–Marlinspike, by Tapit) impressed late to take the Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies and earn herself a trip to Royal Ascot. Debuting for Mark Casse and D J Stable, the grey sat off the speed of longshot You Need Me (St. Patrick's Day) and pounced with a wide bid down the stretch, carrying her momentum to a clear advantage for the win. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0. Bullet, indeed! Another star in the making from the Mark Casse yard? After the disappointment of City Of Troy last Saturday, it is up to Ballydoyle's fellow TDN Rising Star Henry Longfellow (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) to seek to redress the balance in Sunday's Emirates-sponsored G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains at ParisLongchamp. While the stable's 3-year-olds seem to be gradually creeping into gear with every passing day, there is the sense that they are more than a little rusty as they reappear from winter quarters and the son of Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) will have to be near a peak to navigate what is always a tricky encounter around these bends. Along with his more stamina-endowed stablemate Diego Velazquez (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), the G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. and G2 Futurity S. winner could be vulnerable first time up with the home contingent sharpened by their trial efforts. A key member of the domestic defence is Nurlan Bizakov's G3 Prix de Fontainebleau winner Ramadan (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), who is re-opposed by Philippe Allaire and Haras d'Etreham's TDN Rising Star Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) after the pair went first and second in the Apr. 14 course-and-distance prep. Beauvatier, who gives the impression he is yet to have a fair crack of the whip, has lucked out again drawn in 10 and the distinct advantage is with his Christopher Head-trained nemesis who has stall five and a less-complicated running style to aid his cause. Bizakov's racing manager Mathieu le Forestier was issuing positive bulletins ahead of the Classic. “His preparation has gone smoothly and Christopher Head is following the pre-established plan,” he said. “All the lights are flashing green. There won't be that many runners, which means we can be more relaxed about our race plan. In a field of 13 runners, that's enough to facilitate a fast-run race, while, by the same token, it should guarantee no hard-luck stories. The race should be a fluid one.” “Victory would be important in so many ways. Le Havre died all too soon after putting the Haras de Montfort and Preaux Stud on the map, so it would obviously make a lot of sense for us to have one of his sons as a stallion prospect.” The Aga Khan has two engaged, but only one live contender in the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained Keran (Fr) (Blue Point {Ire}), who was second to the gelding Lazzat (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) in the seven-furlong G3 Prix Djebel at Deauville last month. “Keran has worked very well and Jean-Claude Rouget thinks that he can stay a mile,” the Stud's director Georges Rimaud said. “It's a gamble that's worth taking.” Louise Procter In Deep In The Pouliches… Unbeaten so far but untried in any kind of black-type contest, White Birch Farm's TDN Rising Star Louise Procter (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) showed enough when dominating the seven-furlong Prix du Belvedere at Chantilly in March to suggest she will play a leading role in the G1 Poule d'Essai Pouliches. She certainly has a draw advantage over Godolphin's G3 Prix Imprudence winner Romantic Style (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), but she needs to have with the latter's G3 Prix Imprudence form looking stronger by the day. After the stellar efforts of the second and third Ramatuelle (Justify) and Tamfana (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) in the 1000 Guineas and the G3 Chartwell S. success of Great Generation (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) on Saturday, Charlie Appleby's representative holds a distinct form edge. How she fares from stall 14 is another matter. Ballydoyle's G3 Staffordstown Stud S. winner and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf fourth Content (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) looks to provide her late sire with a milestone 100th Group 1 winner, but the same caveat that applies to Henry Longfellow also applies here with her having her first start of the campaign. Scuderia Sagam's G2 Premio Dormello and G3 Premio Primi Passi winner Folgaria (Ire) (Due Diligence) had the Guineas heroine Elmalka (GB) (Kingman {GB}) back in third when extending her tally in Newbury's seven-furlong G3 Fred Darling S. and remains an unknown quantity. Trainer Marco Botti is happy with the post position and said, “I was worried about a wide draw complicating things, but she has got a good draw. Hollie [Doyle] knows the filly well and this is another step up in class from Newbury, even with Roger Varian's filly going on and winning the 1000 Guineas. The form is good and I still think a mile with a bend will suit her better than Newmarket and we think the track at Longchamp will suit her.” Al Shira'aa Farms' G2 Debutante S. winner and G1 Moyglare Stud S. runner-up Vespertilio (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) is charting new territoty for trainer Willie McCreery who said, “We might get the ground we're looking for and we're happy with conditions. It's going to be a tough ask, but I think she's up to showing us her best. I hope the move up to a mile won't be an issue and there are a lot of fillies doing the same in the race. It's a tiny worry, but you have to be confident she will get it and Billy [Lee] will have to ride her like she is going to get it.” Over To Los Angeles… Ballydoyle do not at this stage have the normal clutch of Derby contenders at their disposal, with more beaten than successful in the trials so far this month, so the return of last year's G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Los Angeles (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in Sunday's G3 Cashel Palace Hotel Derby Trial at Leopardstown carries extra significance. In the card's G3 Al Shira'aa Racing “Mutamakina” S. for 3-year-old fillies over the mile trip of the upcoming Irish 1000 Guineas, the Goffs Million winner One Look (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) is the dominant presence taking on Ballydoyle's illustriously-bred G3 Ballylinch Stud Priory Belle S. third Buttons (Ire) (Kingman {GB}). Back at ParisLongchamp, the newly-downgraded G2 St Mark's Basilica Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary hosts the G3 Prix Vanteaux winner Dare To Dream (Fr) (Camelot {GB}), who bids to continue trainer Gavin Hernon's dream scenario that he mapped out at the track last month. Eddie Plesa, Jr. secured his 2,500th career training victory with the 3-year-old gelding Raging Fury at Gulfstream Park Apr. 13. TDN's Senior Racing Editor Steve Sherack caught up with the highly respected 74-year-old conditioner for a wide-ranging interview to discuss the milestone victory, his trip to the 2-year-old sales in Ocala this spring, the future of the sport and much more. TDN: Let's start things off with your milestone victory. What does it mean to you to reach 2,500 wins? EP: When you hit a number like that, you take pride in the accomplishment and the longevity. You look back and see certain things that you've accomplished during your career–it's been a long career. I feel very fortunate. I've been very blessed in this game. But there's also a bit of melancholy. I'm sure we'll end up getting into that more. But the business isn't the same, there's no question about it. Don't like the way it's going. But it is what it is. TDN: Hold that thought for a moment and we'll circle back to discuss the current state of the industry. Let's just chat a little bit more about your landmark victory first. Did you get a chance to celebrate? Knowing how much you enjoy the 2-year-old sales, I'm thinking you might say that you celebrated by signing some tickets in Ocala the following week. EP: (Laughs)… I went out with family and we toasted. Some close friends came over. Things like that. It was noticed by the people around me and we did celebrate it. Itsmyluckyday | Spendthrift TDN: Looking back at your career, Three Ring and Itsmyluckyday were two of your big horses through the years. But is there one win or memory that sticks out when you reflect on your training career? EP: When Itsmyluckyday won the Grade I in New York (2014 GI Woodward S. at Saratoga), that race really sticks out because–a, it was a Grade I; b, it was at Saratoga; and c, we ran again against the horse that beat us previously (finished second behind the Eric Guillot-trained Moreno in the GI Whitney S.) and there was a little banter going on as far as the Racing Form was concerned. (Guillot) said that he had Voodoo and I said, 'Well, I'll have a medal of Saint Joseph on my horse that day so your Voodoo isn't gonna work.' It was fun. Needless to say, we were able to sell him (Itsmyluckyday began his stud career at Spendthrift Farm before relocating to Ohio) and we did quite well with that and he also made a lot of money for us (on the track). Any comfort that I have now in my life, a lot of it has to do with Itsmyluckyday. Training horses is not a business where trainers make a lot of money. Especially with everyday trainers, you're (robbing) Peter to pay Paul. I've been very fortunate and lucky. My wife kept a handle on things and did all of the bookkeeping. If I were to quit tomorrow, my lifestyle wouldn't change. TDN: How many are you training/how big is your operation these days? Retirement doesn't exactly seem to be on your radar after reloading with some 2-year-olds at OBS this spring. EP: Not very big. I've got 16-18 horses right now. Just kinda cruising. I've got people that have worked for me for a long period of time. My assistant trainer has been with me for over 20 years. I've got a groom that's been with me for probably 26 years. There's a lot of longevity with the people that work for me. I feel a certain responsibility to them. They've been good to me and I would hope they would say that I've been good to them. How much longer am I going to do this? I don't know, the game's changing so drastically and it's even changing faster now than I've ever seen it. So, I don't know. TDN: You wound up with three from OBS April ($150,000 Girvin colt; $60,000 Girvin colt; and a $27,000 Win Win Win filly) and one from OBS March ($32,000 Take Charge Indy colt). You've been a long-time supporter of the 2-year-old sales and also purchased the aforementioned Itsmyluckyday (on behalf of Trilogy Stable and Eddie's wife Laurie for $110,000) at the 2012 OBS March sale. How did things go for you in Ocala this spring? EP: It's a draft system for me. Two-year-olds are what I enjoy most of all. I'll know what the 2-year-olds are that I bought this year at this time next year. I've got some nice horses in the barn now–some stakes horses and stakes-quality horses. That makes you get up in the morning and feel good. If they were just horses, I wouldn't be doing it. I've got some great owners–Karl and Cathi Glassman, David Melin, Marion Montanari, Leon Ellman–and those are the kind of relationships that you enjoy. It makes your job so much easier. Ticking | Lauren King TDN: Any big races coming up for the stable or horses that you're looking forward to running in the near future? EP: The 2-year-olds are a ways away. I've got an older horse Ticking (Bolt d'Oro) whose gonna run in a seven-eighths of a mile stakes race (Big Drama H.) at Gulfstream. We gave a lot of money for him ($675,000 '22 OBSAPR). He's a 4-year-old and he's shown flashes. He needs to break through. Hopefully, this will be the race. I've also got a filly Epona's Hope (Adios Charlie)–she's a 3-year-old and I think that she's a stakes horse. She's won a couple of allowance races. TDN: You touched on it earlier that the business just isn't the same. What are some of the biggest issues that you are concerned about right now? EP: The industry did it to itself. Jurisdictions never worked together. They didn't work together on something as simple as licensing and uniformed medication. When I first came around, stewards were to be feared. If you did something that racetrack ownership and management didn't like, they would kick you out. That seemed to go by the wayside. I think managements of most racetracks are more concerned with how many horses does so and so have. 'Oh, I can't kick him out. He's got 40 horses. He's got 50 horses.' I don't see racing's future as rosy. I see a business that–and it's kind of ironic–Dennis Drazin (the chairman and CEO of Darby Development, the management team that operates Monmouth Park) fought the war to get sports gambling. What did horse racing get out of it? Nothing. I mean really, nothing. Sports gambling comes in. Now what happens? People want to bet on sports. They get away from horse racing. Younger people are not betting on horse racing because they're more interested in sports. You can barely find an article in a newspaper that says anything about horse racing except for the Kentucky Derby. And the coverage is next to nothing. You watch ESPN and there's just a little blurb about the Derby. We've lost our way. We've lost our strength. At one time, we were the only game in town. That's not true anymore. I just read an article that handle betting on horses is down nationwide and it's not a surprise. When I first came around, there was no such thing as year-round racing. We hear a lot about racetracks and horses breaking down. When you run year-round on racetrack surfaces, those surfaces need a break. They need to be revamped. They need time off. And they don't do that. They look for a solution. What's the solution? We're gonna put in a new synthetic racetrack. It's a shortcut. I believe that I've seen the best of it–no ifs ands or buts. I hope I'm wrong. I truly am. I've got three children and I could've brought two into the business. At that time, I had a good business going–50-60 horses–and they would've been an asset to me. But I saw what was going on. One of them goes to work now with a gun at his hip–he's a police lieutenant–and I feel better that he has the job that he does as a civil servant rather than coming into my business being a horse trainer. Eddie Plesa | Coglianese TDN: It certainly doesn't sound like it, but do you feel any better about racing's future with HISA (Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority) now firmly in place? EP: I give them credit for trying. But, it's the same old story. You're bringing in the federal government to police a sport that should've been policing itself. I just think logic is gone. There's logical steps to do things and they just refused to do it. That part of the game is over. They got HISA in and they are trying to do the best that they can. But what experience do they have in the game? It makes it tough on us. TDN: You no longer have to compete against Jorge Navarro and Jason Servis, but do you still feel like a lot of trainers are cheating? How clean do you think the game is right now? EP: It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that some of these trainers that just went away were cheating. I don't think it's as bad as it was, but do I think people are still taking advantage? Yeah, I do. TDN: Any closing thoughts? EP: I've been so fortunate. I feel blessed that I have a great family. I feel blessed that I met a lot of people in this game that were captains of industry–doers and shakers. That's the one thing about being a horse trainer, you meet these people. Barry Schwartz (owned GISW Three Ring) was one. I'd call him and talk about his horses. And he was a 50% owner in Calvin Klein. The average person has no conception or idea about the care and love that these horses get. No idea. It's a great sport and it doesn't get the credit that it should. Norman Williamson set a new record for the highest-priced horse sold at the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale when his Justify colt was knocked down to Anthony Stroud on behalf of Godolphin for €2.3 million on what was a banner day for the stallion. The result came less than an hour after Eddie O'Leary broke his own personal record for the highest priced achieved at a breeze-up sale when his Lynn Lodge Stud-consigned Justify colt went the way of Alex Elliott on behalf of Amo Racing for €1 million before the same outfit sold a filly by the stallion to Coolmore deep into the session for €800,000. However, while such sales exemplify the booming trade at the top, the theory that Brexit was to blame for the shakey underbelly to the market at the breeze-up sales in Britain this year was kicked to the curb with just a 75% [down from 83% last year] clearance rate posted on Saturday after a significant number of private sales. The aggregate did climb 3% to €21,769,000 while the average was up by 9% to €166,176 and the median fell by €10,000 to €100,000. Williamson is no stranger to big-ticket results, and can point to Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Native Trail (GB) as being the most high-profile horse that has charted a path from his renowned Oak Tree Farm to Godolphin, but even he admitted to feeling the pressure this breeze-up season. The visibly emotional consignor said shortly after the sale, “It's been a stressful week to say the least. He pulled a shoe after the practice breeze and stood on the nail so we have been minding that for a few days. But then he breezed exceptionally well. His breeze was out of this world-as we all know, he did the fastest time here. “It's been fabulous-I couldn't have dreamed of a result like that. I knew all the right players were on him but I didn't think he'd go to that. But he is by the right sire and he is very good-looking. Godolphin has been lucky with me on Native Trail.” Williamson added, “It's very emotional because so much work goes in behind the scenes. It's probably worse for me because I ride them all myself and know what they are capable of. It's a tough business but it's a great business when it works. It's tougher than ever. They [the buyers] are gone very particular on times and other things. You need the good horses to pay for the others.” The Justify colt represents an outstanding piece of pinhooking from Williamson. Sourced at the Keeneland September Sale for just $150,000, the colt out of black-type High Chaparral (Ire) mare Inchargeofme (GB) looks very well bought now. Williamson said, “He looked like a turf horse when we bought him whereas the Justifys in America are big, dirt horses. Like, Eddie's horse who made a million earlier, he's a big, strong horse and I think that's what the Americans like. I think this lad will suit Europe and there's a lot of High Chaparral to him. I liked that about him. I had a very good horse by High Chaparral called Contributer (Ire) so everything was right for me anyway.” And everything was right for Godolphin, too. Lot 110 is now set to be trained by Charlie Appleby with Stroud left tipping his hat once again to the consignor for coming up trumps with another high-class prospect. He said, “He's a very nice horse and we loved his breeze. The consignor sold us Native Trail so he was one horse we wanted to take home to Moulton Paddocks. It's early days yet but Justify is truly a remarkable stallion.” Asked if he was expecting Coolmore to stage such a staunch counter effort to Stroud's bidding, he replied, “I wish it hadn't [gone to such a level]. Coolmore are fantastic judges so you were going to be bidding against them because he was an outstanding horse.” On the market, he added, “At breeze-ups, there is a percentage who perform very well, so they will be in demand. There is a percentage who don't hit the chart so it is very polarised. “For the consignor, it's a very difficult discipline to get right but, when it does go right, it's a big payday for them. They deserve everything that they achieve and a lot of good horses have come out of the breeze-ups. Vandeek (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) came out of the breeze-ups last year and Native Trail came before him. Over the years, a lot of very good horses have come out of these sales. O'Leary: 'He Could Be A Freak – We'll Never Be Able To Afford Another Justify' O'Leary was left thanking his lucky stars about the fact that he was able to get in on Justify before the share price sky-rocketed. Bought for $135,000 at the September Yearling Sale at Keeneland, lot 62 is out of Galileo (Ire) mare Curlylocks (Ire), herself a full-sister to Churchill (Ire), and the colt certainly lived up to his billing when going the way of Amo Racing. “I was expecting him to sell well as he was very popular and the right guys were on him,” O'Leary said. “It was a magic result. I hope he is seriously lucky for Amo and I thank them very much. He's a double of his Dad. I even have a photograph of his Dad as a yearling to show people how alike they are. Listen, Justify is an unbelievable stallion and we won't be able to buy them again. It's great to be able to sell two of them this week and hopefully they go on to be lucky.” Asked if he was expecting Justify to take off in the way that he has over the past six months, O'Leary added, “No, but I was watching. You could buy a Justify at Keeneland last September. We'll never be able to buy them again. It's magic, but it won't happen again, so we better enjoy it.” Lynn Lodge Stud has sold horses for more than a million before but never at a breeze-up sale meaning even O'Leary could admit that Saturday's result was a special one. He concluded, “Sure it's great-I'll take a million anywhere! It's a fantastic result but what they all make put together is what counts. I've never got this sort of money for a breezer. I got 760,000gns for Great White Eagle (Elusive Quality) and 800,000gns for a Kingman (GB) filly at the Craven but never got a million for a breezer before this. Breezers don't make that sort of money so it's just fantastic. “For a big horse to do what he did, he must be an unnatural talent. He could be a freak-he's so big but yet he's so agile and he knows where his feet are. His knees are closed and his joints are like steel. He found me, I didn't find him.” The Justify colt headlined a strong afternoon's buying by Amo boss Kia Joorabchian. As well as that lot, which was signed for by Elliott, the team also struck early in the session for a Too Darn Hot (GB) filly from Yeomanstown Stud for €800,000. On the Justify colt, Elliott commented, “He's a standout horse for us. What can you say about a horse you think has everything? For the way the stallion has gone, even since September when this horse was bought, he's been doing unbelievable things. He's been bought for Amo Racing and we're trying to buy the best we can. Hopefully he's one of them. “We've got a very big horse in the stable called King Of Steel (Wootton Bassett {GB}). If we can get this horse anywhere near emulating what he's done then we'll all be very happy. He's got size, scope, strength, pedigree, his dam's a sister to Churchill. When you give that money for a horse you need to be pretty sure you're buying the right article and we're all hoping, but, and it's an awful cliche, he's ticked all the boxes.” He added, “Kia is very keen to buy the best he can and hopefully that's what we're doing as a team. You never know what these horses might make, it's just a case of whose appetite is there for the horse. You never really know where they're going to fall but that was what we were thinking he'd cost. If he's good, he could look cheap.” Meanwhile, it was Robson Aguiar who signed for the Too Darn Hot filly, with the Brazilian native revealing that lot 19 would likely be trained by Dominic Ffrench Davis. Coolmore had to be patient to sign for a Justify of their own, but Lynn Lodge Stud's filly [lot 187] by the stallion may have been worth the wait. It was Elliott again who signed for the daughter of G1 Canadian International winner Sarah Lynx (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), bought by Mags O'Toole at Keeneland in September for $110,000. “There's a little bit of deja vu from earlier in the day,” said Elliott. “She's a beautiful filly by Justify out of a Grade 1 winner. She breezed exceptionally well but I think she'll take a bit of time as she's more of a three-year-old type. For her to show that pace and balance and poise in the breeze, she's got the potential to be an exceptional filly.” He added, “We did well here last year buying a filly called Classical Song who ran fourth in the Fillies' Mile. Hopefully this filly can win her maiden and go along the same lines as a two-year-old, but I see her being a Classic type of filly at three. She's been acquired by Coolmore and everyone was keen to get her, but no trainer has been decided yet.” Talking points Blandford Bloodstock was out on its own as the leading buyer after signing for 11 horses to the tune of €2,775,000. Richard Brown was responsible for the headline acts–a €650,000 McKinzie colt from Malcom Bastard, a Blue Point (Ire) colt for €550,000 from Willie Browne and Jim McCartan's Not This Time colt for €460,000. Justify was the dominant force with four lots by the stallion selling for €4,390,000. Not only that, but it was fascinating to see that American-based stallions made up six of the top 10 slots on aggregate and average. It wasn't just the American-bred horses that played a prominent role at Arqana. Owner Mike Repole was a familiar name on the buyers' sheet after snapping up colts by Siyouni (Fr) and Too Darn Hot for €360,000 and €250,000 respectively. Anna Calder of Leamore Horses opened up to TDN Europe this week about what has been her toughest year yet in the consignment ranks. After breaking her leg in January, Calder called on the likes of John Cullinan, Blarney Holland and Roger Marley to help get the horses prepared for the sales. It clearly worked a treat with her Bolt D'Oro colt, bought for $95,000 back in September, selling to Anthony Stroud for €400,000. Up And Down Week For Hassett Some days you are the dog, the next, you are the lamppost. Nobody knows that better than Johnny Hassett who, after suffering a broken leg when holding one of his own horses ahead of the breeze on Thursday, watched on from his hospital bed in France as his Bloodstock Connection cleared over €1 million. Heading that seven-strong draft for Hassett was a Sea The Stars (Ire) colt to Anthony Stroud for €430,000. The profit in that colt wasn't insignificant, either, given he was purchased for €160,000 at Orby Book 2. Hassett also enjoyed a fine result with his Too Darn Hot filly–a €100,000 Orby Book 1 purchase–selling to trainer Fabrice Chappet for €400,000. Recalling how he ended up watching the breeze-up sale from a hospital bed, Hassett said, “I was bringing the Too Darn Hot colt [lot 143] over and sometimes these horses can get a bit excited at the start. He jumped forward, got in front of me a little bit and kicked out. “He kicked me just below the knee at the top of the tibia. The bone is shaped like a funnel and it broke off half the funnel, so he's broken the tibia and part of the knee joint, which makes it quite sore, I can tell you!” The consignor added, “I got taken away in an ambulance but I'm lucky that I have a really good team. I couldn't really talk for the first day or two and I didn't have reception or Whatsapp so they just had to do their thing. They came and met me every night and we went through the lists and then we had a morning meeting between seven and eight.” Bargary Pays Emotional Tribute To Jockey Michael Byrne After selling his Invincible Spirit (Ire) filly for €145,00, Colin Bargary paid an emotional tribute to Michael Byrne, the former jockey who died at the age of 36 last week. A €45,000 yearling purchase at Tattersalls Ireland, the sale to agent Eric Libaud represented one of the best pinhooks to date for Drumonna House, but there was no cheering afterwards at Barn C given the Byrne family were closely in Bargary's thoughts. He said, “She was a quality filly and we're delighted by how she breezed. It's a good result for everyone involved and the team at home but, to be honest, we're all thinking about the Byrne family over here. It's been a very tough week for everyone and things like that just puts things into perspective.” Brother to prominent breeze-up handler Stephen, and son of the former high-class National Hunt jockey turned trainer Michael snr, Michael was best known for his successful spell riding in England. Golden Touch Lot 137 Earthlight colt out of Macrame (Montjeu) Consigned by Shanaville Stables Bought by Hubert Guy Bloodstock for €170,000 having been sourced for just €37,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale Take a bow Eoin McDonagh. The man behind Shanaville Stables recorded a sale to remember when his €37,000 Earthlight colt rocked into €170,000. Out of an unraced Montjeu mare, lot 137 recorded an eye-catching breeze and certainly wasn't missed by the market to deliver a notable result for the first-season sire and vendor. Thought for the day There could have been some serious value going begging at Arqana on Saturday. Many of the top vendors and buyers were in agreement that the catalogue of horses assembled was completely up to scratch but the figures tell you everything you need to know about the trade. The middle market remains in a tricky place and it would make you question whether there is a need for two extra breeze-up sales in Ireland next year. Providing a timely boost to the G1 Poule d'Essai Pouliches prospects of Content (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), John Hennessy's Sea The Boss (GB) (Sea The Moon {Ger}–Shaella {Ire}, by Casamento {Ire}) captured Saturday's G3 Al Shira'aa Racing Irish EBF Jannah Rose S. at Naas to set her course towards the Irish Oaks. Only eighth behind that Ballydoyle peer in the G3 Staffordstown Stud S. at The Curragh when last seen in October, the Jessica Harrington trainee who was also behind Content when fourth in Leopardstown's Listed Ingabelle S. in September enjoyed the extra stamina test on this return to deny Madam Celeste (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) late on. Unhurried early by Shane Foley as she raced behind her four rivals, the 7-2 shot had to come around them all turning for home but delivered a powerful surge to overhaul that Ger Lyons trainee in the final 50 yards and score by a neck. “She was good last year and I just ran her back too quick after the Champions Weekend. She doesn't go on soft ground,” Harrington explained. “It was a big ask for her, with three of them having already had a run this year. I thought fitness might catch her out, but she was good and stayed well. She has a turn of foot and showed us that last year, when she won her maiden. It's only her fourth run and she will come forward a good bit from this. She might end up in the Irish Oaks and will be moving up to a mile and a half.” Pedigree Notes Sea The Boss is the second foal out of Shaella (Ire) (Casamento {Ire}), a half-sister to the G3 Prix Edmond Blanc winner Skins Game (GB) (Diktat {GB}) and the listed scorer Epatha (Ire) (Highest Honor {Fr}) as well as to the dam of the G3 Prix du Lys winner Volkan Star (Ire) by Sea The Moon's sire Sea The Stars (Ire). Also connected to the G2 Prix de Royallieu winner Mouramara (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}), who is in turn the dam of the G1 Sydney Cup hero Mourayan (Ire) (Alhaarth {Ire}), and the G2 Lancashire Oaks winner and G1 Prix Vermeille runner-up Endless Time (Ire) again by Sea The Stars, Shaella has the 2-year-old colt Without Burlington (GB) (Without Parole {GB}) named Without Burlington (GB) who was a 50,000gns purchase by KPF Bloodstock at Tattersalls Book 2. She also has a yearling filly and colt foal by Masar (GB). The GI Kentucky Derby hero, Mystik Dan (Goldencents), will run May 18 in the 149th GI Preakness Stakes at Baltimore's Pimlico Race Course, trainer Kenny McPeek said Saturday morning via a Churchill Downs press release. “All systems go,” McPeek said. “He'll ship out in the morning.” The champ had a routine 1 1/2-mile gallop at Churchill Downs under retired jockey Robby Albarado, who will be part of the Derby winner's travel team to Baltimore. After an endoscopic exam and bloodwork was analyzed just to ensure everything was normal, the colt was given the greenlight to travel to Maryland. “The horse is doing fantastic,” McPeek said after Mystik Dan trained. “I've already kind of arranged the logistics of it all.” Mystik Dan will get a rematch in the 1 3/16-mile Preakness with Muth (Good Magic), who won the GI Arkansas Derby in late March. “He was ready for the Arkansas Derby,” McPeek said. “I'm not going to use that as an excuse. But he did get turned sideways in that turn, and Brian felt that cost him three or four lengths. But the horse fought back, fortunately… I'm optimistic we can give (Muth) another run.” The draw for the Preakness will take place Monday, May 13.
