Searching for his first Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m) victory since Green Birdie’s 2008 triumph, Caspar Fownes will unleash a double-pronged attack on Sunday’s HK$13 million feature as a quartet of international jockeys descend on Sha Tin. Fownes has booked Blake Shinn to ride Elliptical, while Harry Bentley takes the reins on stablemate Awesome Fluke as the Australian black type winners press for Hong Kong breakthroughs. Hayes Stakes (1400m) under Shinn, Elliptical has failed to show his best in four Hong Kong starts, having scoped with a substantial amount of mucus in the trachea after finishing 10th behind Ka Ying Generation over 2000m at Sha Tin on February 4. “Elliptical is going alright, he’s a better horse than what he’s showing, that’s for sure,” Fownes, a four-time Hong Kong champion trainer, said. “He’s just taking a bit of time to adjust in Hong Kong, not everything has gone smoothly for him. So, we’ll see – it’s going to be a tough race on the weekend. “It’s good to have Blake Shinn coming up – he knows the horse really well so he’ll be able to give us a bit more feedback. The horse’s future is way ahead of him. It’s not where he is. I’m just hopeful that he can come up quick. “It’s good that Blake is coming up to ride most of ours. Stable and Robert Cotran's undefeated GIII Holy Bull S. winner Hades (Awesome Slew), a trend trainer Joe Orseno hopes to see continue as the colt sits out Saturday's GII Coolmore Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream Park to await the GI Florida Derby. Since his two length score in the first leg of the Florida series, Hades has worked twice at four furlongs and at a mile, which prompted the connections to give the second leg some consideration before deciding to pass. “He's doing great, that's the problem. It's hard to sit still,” Orseno said. “But in the grand scheme of things and what we're trying to accomplish, it's probably the right thing to do. I've seen too many people try to run in all three races here and then you have nothing left. Nathan Williamson is set to debut two royally bred two-year-olds in Always Dreaming, a full brother to Don’t Stop Dreaming and Captain’s Mistress, a half-sister to Merlin. Captains Mistress turned heads in her latest trial when charging late to down her race rival Justanothersip right on the post. The performance has been enough to see the Captaintreacherous pacer rated at odds as low as $1.85 ahead of her clash with a smart field of two-year-old fillies. “She has really trialled up lovely,” Williamson said. “Everything we have asked of her, she has done.” “So let’s hope that on Friday she can do the same.” “We are really happy with her and her training has been good.” “She is a pretty sensible sort of filly and I expect her to be hard to beat.” Always Dreaming is a not only a full brother to Don’t Stop Dreaming but also a half-brother to his stablemate, the southern star Dreams Are Free. Though she faces tougher competition on Friday, she still looks a strong winning hope. “This mare has really turned the corner, her Christchurch trip racing against the good ones up there has brought her on,” Gray said. “She has only had 12 starts and she is really starting to click in.” Joes Rock steps back in grade after her last start fourth in the Group 1 New Zealand Standardbred Breeders Stakes. By Michael Guerin Co-trainer Scott Phelan says the crucial tactics in the $60,000 Alabar Classic at Alexandra Park tonight will be left up to driver Zachary Butcher. Phelan and senior training partner Barry Purdon train Cold Chisel, who alongside arch rival Chase A Dream head the market for the Group 2. Chase A Dream has been too good for Cold Chisel the last two times they have met, both times by getting in front of him. There was little in it last start when Chase A Dream led and Cold Chisel trailed last start and if they did the same tonight there is no reason to expect the result to change unless their levels of performance does. But with Cold Chisel drawn the ace and Chase A Dream barrier 3, Phelan says Butcher can see how Cold Chisel feels early and make his mind up. “We won’t be telling him what to do and often it comes down to the first 50m,” says Phelan. “But if he wants to have a crack at holding the lead we will back that and I still think he has a shot from the trail.” That early burn, or lack of it, could decide the 2200m mobile as a the gap between the two favourites isn’t as great as their $1.45 vs $3 prices on Thursday night suggests.
