  3. Jody's Pride (f, 3, American Pharoah–Jody's Song, by Scat Daddy) opened her 2024 with style here as she outgamed Carmelina (Maximus Mischief) to claim her first stakes win of the season in the Busher S. A dirt horse by accident after her maiden turf dash debut Aug. 9 at Saratoga was brought off the grass and she dominated by 10 1/2 lengths, it was a similar story for the Matron S. in her second start Oct. 8 when that six-panel sprint also came off the turf and again sending Jody's Pride to the winner's enclosure. Intentionally entered in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies going long on the main track at Santa Anita Park, she continued her improvement to come a neck short of catching champion MGISW Just F Y I (Justify) at 17-1 odds. Returning at a one-turn mile, and greeting a rainy New York day, the 4-5 favorite stalked Carmelina as she rolled through :23.62 and :46.81 early splits. Making a bid entering the bend, Jody's Pride had come on even terms with that leader from the six path as they swung into the upper stretch. The fillies locked horns to the final sixteenth before the eventual winner finally managed to move clear by 2 1/4 lengths. Gin Gin (Hightail) came on from the back to close the trifecta. With the score here, Jody's Pride secured 50 Kentucky Oaks points in addition to the 15 she earned from the runner-up effort at the Breeders' Cup. JODY'S PRIDE fought with Carmelina down the lane and came away with 50 Points to the KY Oaks with her win in the Busher Stakes at Aqueduct! Late Pick 3: https://t.co/mGeXnEqN9C pic.twitter.com/GSWOOawXK3 — TVG (@TVG) March 2, 2024 “We gave her 30 days [after the Breeders' Cup] and then we brought her back to Palm Meadows; she was doing everything great,” said trainer Jorge Abreu. “She was working pretty good and we had her pointed for the Davonna Dale, and at the last minute, [co-owner] Mr. Weston decided to run her over here. So I said, 'OK, let's go.'” When asked whether his stable star might next be seen in the GIII Gazelle S., a 100-point qualifier to the Kentucky Oaks Apr. 6, Abreu said, “I'm going to see how she comes out of it and probably [come back] here in the Gazelle, and then the Kentucky Oaks. She ran two turns already and my concern was if she was going to perform as well as she did as a 2-year-old. She did, and I think she wants to go longer than that even.” Co-owner Steve Weston of Parkland Thoroughbreds, too, is looking ahead to Kentucky. “We made it [to the Kentucky Oaks] once before with Venti Valentine and we actually won this race for the third time today. We won it twice with Final Furlong, with Venti Valentine and Espesso Shot. I'm not saying we have the best horse for the Oaks of the 14, but at least we have a chance.” The second foal for Jody's Song, a half-sister to MSW & GISP Make Mischief (Into Mischief), Jody's Pride is the most accomplished for her dam. She has a 2-year-old full-brother Moreperfectunion as well as a yearling full-brother already named Jody's Legacy. The mare is due to Epicenter for 2024. 7. The top bid during the 2024 Fasig-Tipton February Digital Sale was made by John Stewart's Resolute Bloodstock, who parted with $370,000 for Pounce (Lookin At Lucky), a maiden winner at first asking for Quintessential Racing Florida LLC and Hat Creek Racing and this trainer on the dirt at Churchill Nov. 19, an even sixth from a difficult high draw in a one-mile allowance over the Turfway synthetic Dec. 13 and the front-running winner of her turf debut from an equally awkward draw Feb. 11. Returning just 11 days after changing hands digitally Feb. 11, the bay validated the outlay with a late-on-the-scene victory in the GIII Herecomesthebride S. With no luck at the draw yet again, Pounce was wisely taken hold of by Javier Castellano and angled over to the inside to caboose the field–led by Mystic Lake (Mo Town)–into the first turn. Content to trail down the back, Pounce was quietly ridden through the middle furlongs as market leaders Life's an Audible (Audible) and Ozara (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) raced handier to the speed. Pounce began to thread the needle three furlongs out, splitting horses on a couple of occasions before angling out for the drive under a full head of steam. Life's an Audible also kicked nicely as Ozara failed to go on, but Pounce sprinted slightly the better of the two and was home narrowly best. “Last time she broke good and I sent her to the lead, wire-to- wire,” Castellano said. “It was a different ballgame today the way I handicapped the race. I was way outside with a lot of speed in the race. My goal was to save ground on the first turn but he didn't break good out of the gate and I used my best judgment to drop in and save all the ground I could on the first turn because in my mind I'd have to lose ground turning for home. It was a beautiful trip. [Life's an Audible] came out a little bit and my horse hesitated a little bit to go past, but I encouraged her and she responded really well.” Pedigree Notes: Pounce is the first foal and only starter for her winning dam, a $170,000 OBS April breezer, who was purchased by Joshua Deets for $37,000 with this filly in utero at the 2020 Keeneland November Sale. A half-sister to a pair of black-type performers, including GIII Providencia S. third Gold Dragon Queen (Goldencents), Bouncy produced a filly by Hard Spun Feb. 25. 9. Racing journalist Jonny Turner has delved into the form for today’s great card of racing at Rangiora and come up with four horses punters should consider in their calculations. Race 3 – Millwood Goddess – $3.30 FFW Moving in two barrier spots might just be enough for Millwood Goddess to seal an emotional win for trainer Tom Bagrie. Racing in the colours of Bagrie’s late father Peter, following his passing on Wednesday, Millwood Goddess produced a gutsy second at Addington on Thursday. Today’s race doesn’t look any harder and though the mare still draws wide, barrier 7 looks a workable spot for a horse who brings stronger form than her rivals. Millwood Goddess looks a serious winning hope and there will be no shortage of supporters willing her home. Race 4 – Buddha – $2 FFW Barrier 1 looks the main challenge for Buddha who debuts for trainer Regan Todd on the back of a strong trial win at today’s venue. The pacer stepped away cleanly to lead from the ace draw in the first of two trials, but that was in a learners workout, a little different to the pressure of a standing start race. After going on to run second, Buddha impressed when powering home from off the speed to score in his qualifying trial after making a safe but steady beginning. With the progress the pacer made from trial one to trial two, it looks safe to assume he will have taken benefit from his latest public outing ahead of his debut today. If Buddha can step away and race handy he looks a strong winning chance for driver Robbie Close. Race 6 – Cardi B – $4.5 FFW A step back in grade has Cardi B well placed ahead of just her third standing start attempt. Though the mare is a standing start rookie, she made an excellent beginning in the Ashburton Cup two starts ago when running a very creditable fifth. Chasing talented types like Beach Flybye, Double Time and Heza Sport in that race looks outstanding form to bring to today’s rating 48-55 assignment. If driver Kyle Cameron can step the mare and keep her handy to the pace she looks a genuine winning threat. Race 8 – Lady Boutique – $3.20 FFW A tenacious last start second looks a great pointer for Team Dunn with Lady Boutique today. The three-year-old dug in bravely after sitting parked for the last lap of her latest outing at Ashburton in an up to rating 54 event. Lady Boutique slots into company up to rating 48 in a 2600m standing start – similar conditions to the 2400m of her last standing start. If the filly and driver John Dunn can get a little more cover than they did in their excellent last start second they should take plenty of holding out. View the full article
  10. Fiona's Magic (f, 3, St Patrick's Day–Mollie's Magic, by Factum), runner-up in the GIII Forward Gal S. Feb. 3, led them every step of the way at odds of 9-1 to upset Saturday's GII Davona Dale S. at Gulfstream Park. It was a half-length back to 'TDN Rising Star' Into Champagne (Into Mischief), who was turned back after reaching even terms in the stretch. Heavily favored 'TDN Rising Star' Leslie's Rose (Into Mischief) was a disappointing third. The final time for the one-turn mile was 1:37.16. Winning trainer Michael Yates also upset this race last year at 46-1 with Dorth Vader (Girvin). Fiona's Magic becomes the first stakes winner for St Patrick's Day, a full-brother to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Champion 2-year-old filly and Davona Dale 7-5 morning-line favorite Just F Y I (Justify) was scratched Saturday afternoon after developing a fever. “She was fine, but she spiked a fever and her temperature has just kept going up,” said Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. 13. Eskendereya (Giant's Causeway–Aldebaran Light, by Seattle Slew), whose son Mitole was the leading freshman sire of 2023 by winners and progeny earnings, died of a heart attack Mar. 2 at Shizunai Stallion Station in Japan, where he had been standing since 2016. He was 17 years of age. Bred in Kentucky by Sanford Robertson, Eskendereya was purchased by Zayat Stables for $250,000 at the 2008 Keeneland September sale. Turned over to Todd Pletcher, the chestnut broke his maiden in a rained-off renewal of the 2009 Pilgrim S. and switched to the synthetic for that year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile, finishing ninth. He was perfect in three starts at three, including romping scores in the GII Fountain of Youth S. and GI Wood Memorial S., but he suffered a leg injury leading up to the 2010 GI Kentucky Derby and entered stud at Taylor Made Stallions the following year. He retired with a record of 4-1-0 from six starts for earnings of $725,700. From his six American-foaled crops, Eskendereya was responsible for 22 black-type winners, including GI Met Mile winner Mor Spirit as well as Mitole. America's champion sprinter of 2019, the Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt runner amassed four Grade I wins that season, including the Met Mile and GI Breeders' Cup Sprint. Eskendereya entered stud at Shizunai Stallion Station on the island of Hokkaido and has sired for 109 individual winners from 167 starters. All totaled, Eskendereya has been represented by 365 winners which have earned nearly $42.1 million. Japanese breeders continue to have access to the family, as Eskendereya's half-brother Oxbow (Awesome Again) resides at Shadai Stallion Station. KINGSBARNS (c, 4, Uncle Mo–Lady Tapit {GSP}, by Tapit), last year's GII Louisiana Derby winner, made his return to the races Saturday off nearly a nine-month layoff. A player on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, the son of Uncle Mo wound up 14th behind Mage (Good Magic) under the TwinSpires and finished his 3-year-old season beaten just a neck as the heavy favorite in the Pegasus S. at Monmouth June 17. Confidently bet at 3-5 in his first trip back to Gulfstream since breaking his maiden in Jan. 2023, Kingsbarns was outrun by much of the field through the opening half mile in :44.52 as Vivir Con Alegria (Chi) (Flyer {Chi}) led. The pace began to catch up to the frontrunner and Kingsbarns swung off the turn three wide with a clear path to go by, doing so inside the final sixteenth to pick up the half-length win. Vivir Con Alegria held second at odds of 12-1. An $800,000 2-year-old buy for Spendthrift Farm, Kingsbarns is out of a half to GISW Gozzip Girl (Dynaformer). 21. Trainer John Size has won the Hong Kong Classic Cup, the second leg of the 4-year-old Triple Crown, no fewer than four times and he'll saddle two of the top fancies as he looks for his first victory in the race since Sun Jewellery (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) in 2011 Sunday afternoon at Sha Tin Racecourse. Helios Express (Aus) (Toronado {Ire}) is the lone member of the 14-strong field rated in triple figures (102), has won six of his eight lifetime starts and three of his last four. Drawn neatly in gate two Sunday, the bay was impressive in defeating Class 2 rivals over a mile Jan. 7 and backed up the performance with a 1 3/4-length defeat of Helene Feeling (Ire) (Sioux Nation) and a running-on Star Mac (Aus) (Heroic Valour {Aus}) in a slowly run renewal of the Hong Kong Classic Mile four weeks back. The 1800 metres of Sunday's test is as far as he's been, and he'll need to switch off better if he is to see it out, his connections admit. Size said: “We're trying to adapt to a distance and to a tempo, which always is an issue for the jockeys who manage the horse through the race, so it depends on the circumstances on the day and what sections they run during the race. So far, he's been okay.” Size's second entry, Ensued (Lemon Drop Kid), will look to become the first US-bred to take the Classic Cup since Zaidan (Street Cry {Ire}) back in 2012. Placed twice from three overseas runs for James Fanshawe, the bay gelding broke his maiden on local debut over 1800 metres last October and–equally unusually–already owns two victories over the BMW Hong Kong Derby trip of 2000 metres. A horse that grinds it out, he just missed in Class 2 over the metric 10 furlongs, but tries restricted company for the first time in Hong Kong. “He's been quite unusual the way he came into Hong Kong and won immediately at a distance, that doesn't happen too often so he's sort of stamped himself as one who has adapted to Hong Kong quite quickly,” Size said. “[Being] just a little bit one-paced is probably the chink in his armour, he just doesn't have enough acceleration. But, with that, as long as he's running in a forward position and running freely, that's okay.” Two other American-breds are rough chances, Chancheng Glory (Mor Spirit) and Unbelievable (Justify). Chill Chibi (NZ) (Wrote {Ire}) posted four straight wins over the course of last season and this season at Happy Valley before having the streak snapped by subsequent G3 January Cup H. hero Happy Together (Ire) (Dragon Pulse {Ire}) Dec. 20. Having missed the Classic Mile via a minor setback, he makes his Sha Tin debut Sunday. 23. Charlie Appleby, runaway leading trainer this season at Meydan by both earnings ($8,915,500) and percentage of wins (40%) amongst those conditioners with more than a handful of runners at the meet, got his third winner on the Super Saturday card with LEGEND OF TIME (GB) (c, 3, Sea The Stars {Ire}-Kissable {Ire}, by Danehill Dancer {Ire}) in the Listed Jumeirah Classic sponsored by Arabian Adventures. His earlier wins on the evening came with Bold Act (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) in the G2 Dubai City of Gold and with Cinderella's Dream (GB) (Shamardal) in the Listed Jumeirah Guineas. All three of the winners are Godolphin homebreds. Perfect in his three starts at Meydan, Legend Of Time emerged from the early scrum in an eager third and had to be hard held by jockey William Buick. Quickly settling into a comfortable spot against the rail with cover just behind the leading duo of Athan (Arg) (Orpen) and Musical Act (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Buick bided his time with a clearly loaded mount until the straight loomed. With little visible effort, Legend Of Time tipped out and around Athan as Musical Act floated wide. Legend Of Time already found the front before Buick encouraged him with hands and heels and was a facile winner despite Musical Act finding more and briefly looking for a battle until Legend Of Time kicked clear by 4 3/4 lengths. Like the winner, Musical Act is a Godolphin homebred trained by Appleby. Athan held for third as none of the others factored at the finish. The final time for the 1800 metres was 1:49.83. Legend Of Time has been steadily building his CV, having won his debut at Haydock last fall. Off the board when trying the G3 Tattersalls S. at Newmarket three weeks later, he was put away before reemerging in Dubai to win conditions events Jan. 5 and Feb. 2, going 1400 meters and 1600 meters, respectively. “He's won the series now and probably 1800 metres is more to his liking,” said Buick. “He's an exciting horse for the rest of the season. The American Turf Derby series over there might suit him.” Appleby's exacta in the Jumeirah Classic mirrored his success in the race in 2023, when he sent Naval Power (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), One Nation (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), and Highbank (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) to fill out the trifecta. He only had the two entrants this year. Pedigree Notes: Legend Of Time is the 117th black-type winner worldwide for Gilltown Stud's all-conquering Sea The Stars (Ire). With the Jumeirah Classic winner, the remarkable sire of 70 group winners now has two stakes winners out of daughters of Danehill Dancer and an additional two out of daughters of that one's sire, Danehill. The late Danehill Dancer has 168 stakes winners as a broodmare sire. 24. SWEEP FEET (JPN) (Suave Richard {Jpn}–Bijou Tosho {Jpn}, by Deep Sky {Jpn}) proved fleetest in the G2 Tulip Sho at Hanshin on Saturday, a prep for the G1 Oka Sho on Apr. 7. It was the first stakes victory for the YGG Horse Club runner. Slowly into stride, she soon raced third last in the strung-out field behind the swift early pace set by Sekitoba East (Jpn) (Declaration Of War), who covered the first quarter in :23.30 and the half-mile in :46.00. In touch with the main body just after half-way, the filly swung wide on the turn and blew past all comers barring the frontrunner 200 metres from the line. Still traveling with a full head of steam, she forged past that rival to win by 1 1/4 lengths in late stretch. Hawaiian Tiare (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) was third, another half-length behind. A winner at Kyoto in October, Sweep Feet ran second in the Shiragiku Sho , but did not lift a hoof when seventh in the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies. In her 3-year-old bow, she ran second in the Listed Elfin S. Pedigree Notes Sweep Feet is the third stakes winner and third group winner for 2023 Japanese Champion First-Season Sire Suave Richard. He has also been represented by his star filly, G1 Hopeful S. winner Regaleira (Jpn), and G2 Keio Hai Nisai S. victor Corazon Beat (Jpn). Her dam had fillies by Animal Kingdom in 2022 and 2023, before visiting Majestic Warrior last year. Granddam Sweep Tosho (End Sweep) was named Champion Older Mare in Japan, and she also claimed the G1 Takarazuka Kinen. 25. 'TDN Rising Star' and GI Breeders' Futurity winner Locked (Gun Runner) has scratched from Saturday's GII Coolmore Fountain of Youth S. along with Victory Avenue (Arrogate) according to social media posts from each horses' respective connections along with a release from Gulfstream Park Saturday morning. Locked was 5-2 on the morning line while Victory Avenue was 4-1. Locked will scratch from today's Fountain of Youth @GulfstreamPark. The Grade 1-winner and @BreedersCup placed son of Gun Runner still has his eye on the prize. We'll regroup and come up with a game plan. #BelieveBig pic.twitter.com/hkvB1zrsCg — Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners (@EclipseTBP) March 2, 2024 Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners noted on X that, “Locked will scratch from today's Fountain of Youth…but still has his eye on the prize. We'll regroup and come up with a game plan.” “He's [Victory Avenue] a high energy horse and he didn't eat his food and is mouse quiet today,” Ramiro Restrepo told Gulfstream media. “That's totally uncharacteristic.” This AM we had to scratch Victory Avenue from today's FOY. VA is normally a high energy, feel good colt. He does not have a fever & externally is fine, But he didn't eat his feed last night/this AM and is a bit quiet. Horse comes first, we'll monitor him & proceed accordingly. pic.twitter.com/zXAn9d3Jk9 — Gustavo Delgado S (@GDS_Racing) March 2, 2024 The post Locked, Victory Avenue Scratch From Fountain Of Youth appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
