All continues to go smoothly for D. J. Stable and Robert Cotran's undefeated GIII Holy Bull S. winner Hades (Awesome Slew), a trend trainer Joe Orseno hopes to see continue as the colt sits out Saturday's GII Coolmore Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream Park to await the GI Florida Derby. Since his two length score in the first leg of the Florida series, Hades has worked twice at four furlongs and at a mile, which prompted the connections to give the second leg some consideration before deciding to pass. “He's doing great, that's the problem. It's hard to sit still,” Orseno said. “But in the grand scheme of things and what we're trying to accomplish, it's probably the right thing to do. I've seen too many people try to run in all three races here and then you have nothing left. We're just trying to do right by the horse.” Potentially, Hades could be Orseno's second GI Kentucky Derby starter. He entered Thunder Blitz in 2001, who was fourth behind Monarchos. 7th-GP, $75K, A/OC, 3yo, 1 1/8m, 4:08 p.m. Courtlandt Farms' CONQUEST WARRIOR (City of Light) impressed in his Gulfstream debut Jan. 13 and earned 'TDN Rising Star' status for trainer Shug McGaughey. The $1,000,000 Keeneland September yearling bumps up into allowance company over the local main track Friday and adds an extra 1/8-mile to boot as he preps for a potential run at an upcoming GI Kentucky Derby prep. Conquest Warrior enters off a bullet five-furlong drill Feb. 24 (1:00 3/5 {1/7}). While main rival Speak Easy (Constitution) will scratch in favor of the GII Coolmore Fountain of Youth S., Conquest Warrior will have to deal with another impressive maiden runner in Peter Blum Thoroughbreds' Merit (Mastery) who broke through on debut at Gulfstream by 10 1/4 lengths late last year and was third when last spotted Feb. 3. By Jonny Turner Before Don’t Stop Dreaming and Merlin battle it out in the Chariots Of Fire at Menangle, little brother and little sister will be out to impress in their debuts at Ascot Park on Friday. Nathan Williamson is set to debut two royally bred two-year-olds in Always Dreaming, a full brother to Don’t Stop Dreaming and Captain’s Mistress, a half-sister to Merlin. Captains Mistress turned heads in her latest trial when charging late to down her race rival Justanothersip right on the post. The performance has been enough to see the Captaintreacherous pacer rated at odds as low as $1.85 ahead of her clash with a smart field of two-year-old fillies. “She has really trialled up lovely,” Williamson said. “Everything we have asked of her, she has done.” “So let’s hope that on Friday she can do the same.” “We are really happy with her and her training has been good.” “She is a pretty sensible sort of filly and I expect her to be hard to beat.” Always Dreaming is a not only a full brother to Don’t Stop Dreaming but also a half-brother to his stablemate, the southern star Dreams Are Free. The pacer is unbeaten in his trials, ahead of taking on a small but talented field of two-year-old colts and geldings. “We like him, he has done everything nice right the way through,” Williamson said. “You never quite know when you first step out under race conditions.” “But he is a nice gaited horse and he is very sensible.” “He has got the 1 draw and he does seem to have some of the family ability.” “He has trained on well since his latest trial and we are happy with him.” Trainer Brett Gray starts two two-year-olds which clash with Williamson’s pairing in Ada R J and Drummershavtime who both look eachway threats. Gray starts a big team of eight horses at Ascot Park on Friday, including Takeitout and Joes Rock who give him a strong hand in Friday’s Southern Belle Speed Series heat. Takeitout impressed in her last start win in a heat of the series at Gore. Though she faces tougher competition on Friday, she still looks a strong winning hope. “This mare has really turned the corner, her Christchurch trip racing against the good ones up there has brought her on,” Gray said. “She has only had 12 starts and she is really starting to click in.” Joes Rock steps back in grade after her last start fourth in the Group 1 New Zealand Standardbred Breeders Stakes. Though she faces a tough draw in barrier 8 she must be respected on class. “All these short distance races are not really her go, she likes the 2600m more, like in the Group One.” “But she is really, really well and we are happy with her.” “If she gets the right run she can show that speed.” Julie Jaccka also looks a big threat for the Gray stable in Friday’s feature trot. Is it Chisel or Chase in tonight’s Alabar Classic?
Wandering Eyes posted a topic in BOAY Racing News
By Michael Guerin Co-trainer Scott Phelan says the crucial tactics in the $60,000 Alabar Classic at Alexandra Park tonight will be left up to driver Zachary Butcher. Phelan and senior training partner Barry Purdon train Cold Chisel, who alongside arch rival Chase A Dream head the market for the Group 2. Chase A Dream has been too good for Cold Chisel the last two times they have met, both times by getting in front of him. There was little in it last start when Chase A Dream led and Cold Chisel trailed last start and if they did the same tonight there is no reason to expect the result to change unless their levels of performance does. But with Cold Chisel drawn the ace and Chase A Dream barrier 3, Phelan says Butcher can see how Cold Chisel feels early and make his mind up. “We won’t be telling him what to do and often it comes down to the first 50m,” says Phelan. “But if he wants to have a crack at holding the lead we will back that and I still think he has a shot from the trail.” That early burn, or lack of it, could decide the 2200m mobile as a the gap between the two favourites isn’t as great as their $1.45 vs $3 prices on Thursday night suggests. Later in the night the Purdon/Phelan team look set to dominate the last race with high-class filly Duchess Megxit the $1.30 favourite after the scratching of Coastal Babe. “We also have Artisan in there and she will give a good account of herself but class should shine through with Duchess Megxit.” How to tackle Alexandra Park on Friday, on what looks a night for the multi punters. 1: Inasinglemoment (Alex Park, R1): Looks a natural and created big impression winning debut last winter. Looked ready winning at the workouts last weeked and meets weak field. 2: Chase A Dream (Alex Park, R5): If he leads should win but can also winning coming from behind. Top pick in what looks a two-horse race with Cold Chisel. 3: Duchess Megxit (Alex Park, R8): What was shaping as a great early Oaks prelude between the Duchess Megxit and Coastal Babe now looks a one-filly race after Coastal Babe’s scratching. 4: Jolimont (Alex Park, R7): Took on the best three-year-olds last season and destined to make his way to open class. Looked forward enough beating stablemate Little Spike (R5) at the workouts last week to suggest he ready for tonight. 5: Twista (Alex Park, R3): Still learning but hit the line well against the best three-year-olds last start. Drawn to be the one to beat. View the full article -

Siena Farm and WinStar Farm's Speak Easy (Constitution), who had been cross-entered in an optional-claimer Friday, will take his place in the line-up for Saturday's GII Coolmore Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream Park. The sophomore debuted with an impressive victory going seven furlongs at the Hallandale oval Jan. 27. He drew the rail and will be facing eight other 3-year-olds in the 1 1/16-miles Fountain of Youth. “We like the post and the way he's been training,” trainer Todd Pletcher said Thursday. Irad Ortiz Jr., who was slated to ride Speak Easy Friday, will have the return mount in the Fountain of Youth. Speak Easy had been installed as the 3-5 morning-line favorite in a field of seven 3-year-olds entered in Friday's seventh race, a 1 1/8-mile optional-claiming allowance. Courtlandt Farms' Conquest Warrior (City of Light) is expected to be favored in his absence. Trained by Shug McGaughey, Conquest Warrior was tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' following a gutsy victory in a Jan. 13 maiden special weight race. By Michael Guerin Preparation both on and off the track could be the key to a Kiwi victory in Saturday night’s A$250,000 Chariots Of Fire in Sydney. In one of the greatest shows of New Zealand pacing strength since trans Tasman harness racing rivalry fell into a post-Covid slumber, three New Zealand-trained pacers will contest Australia’s biggest four-year-old race at Menangle. Auckland trainers Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan have both Merlin and Sooner The Bettor in the mobile mile, with Merlin an outstanding second after sitting parked on his Australian debut last Saturday but set to start from the tricky barrier 7. Sooner The Bettor gets the perfect ace draw but while always a factor in major races he has rarely threatened to win at this level yet. Which leaves Don’t Stop Dreaming as not only the best Kiwi hope but the favourite from barrier 2. He has transitioned well to Australian racing, finishing a brave second to Leap To Fame in the Hunter Cup a month ago before two huge winning runs at Menangle, a track which often catches New Zealand horses out first time of asking. Don’t Stop Dreaming seems almost as potent leading or swooping but from barrier 2 over a mobile mile trainer-driver Mark Purdon knows leading would be the better scenario. Which is where Purdon’s personal preparation comes in. “I think Sooner The Bettor is the sort of horse who would be keen to take a trail on him but I don’t know about the two horses drawn directly outside him,” says Purdon. “They are both pretty good obviously so I will have to do a fair of video work and see how their gate speed is and how they like to race so I can have my tactics right.” The pair outside him are Better Be The Best, the best three-year-old in NSW and their Derby winner last season, while outside him is Frankie Ferocious, the latest flying machine from a team Purdon knows well. He is trained by Jason Grimson and driven by Cam Hart, the combination that beat Purdon’s pacer Akuta with Swayzee in the NZ Cup in November, while they also down Self Assured with Majestic Cruiser in a Messenger at Alexandra Park two years ago. Frankie Ferocious has been airborne in two starts for Grimson so if he or Better Be The Best reach the lead early, Don’t Stop Dreaming’s job becomes a lot trickier. That raises the question of how does Purdon eek enough gate speed out of a horse like Don’t Stop Dreaming to beat the red hot Menangle milers at their own game? Purdon is not one for short-term boosts like hopple shorteners or buzzing horses up in prelims, believing the elite horses often have more gate speed than expected when asked. But he does have one card to play. “I will look to pre-warm him up two or three races before the Chariots,” he explains. “He is not a horse who races sore but he can be a horse who takes a while to warm into things so to get his mind on the job and body ticking over I will pre-warm him.” Before then Purdon and his brother Barry’s pair have a different sort of heat to worry about as Menangle was expecting temperatures around 39 degrees yesterday when all 12 Chariots contenders were supposed to enter the Menangle retention barn for surveillance 48 hours before the race. “I hope that gets delayed, that just too hot for 12 horses to be stuck inside under one roof even though they have fans to try and keep them cool,” he explains. The exact situation that could muddy Don’t Stop Dreaming’s chances, a hectic early speed and pressure, would seem the perfect one for his arch rival Merlin, who can win if those inside him go too fast early but would face a huge task if one of the two favourites got an easy lead. HISA's mission is to protect the integrity of competition and the welfare of horses in the Thoroughbred racing industry. The Banned Substances list, set forth under HISA's Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) Program, is one of the many ways HISA advances this mission. Under HISA's ADMC Program, substances with no legitimate, medically justified use in Thoroughbreds are among those classified as Banned Substances, just as they are under the anti-doping programs being run by other equine sports' governing bodies. Many “non-approved substances” on the Banned Substances list have not been proven to enhance performance, but the fact that they may have performance-enhancing effects–and have no legitimate, medically justified use–is reason enough for inclusion on the list. Horse racing and many other sports take the common sense approach that, for the sake of equine or human athlete's well-being, substances with unknown effects on their bodies should never be permitted to be in their systems. In line with the Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit's (HIWU's) commitment to enforcing the ADMC Program equally and fairly, Responsible Persons can provide context for a violation when notified of suspected rule violations. Following the issuance of a Charge Letter, a Responsible Person may request a hearing before a member of the independent Arbitral Body, where they can present evidence of inadvertent human transfer. Additionally, HISA's Atypical Findings Policy addresses prohibited substances commonly found through environmental contamination (e.g. caffeine, ractopamine, scopolamine). If a horse tests positive for a substance listed in the Atypical Findings Policy, further investigation and review will take place between HIWU and the Responsible Person to determine if the case should be deemed negative or pursued as a violation. A charge is only pursued if the investigation concludes that contamination is not likely to be the cause of the positive. To date, HIWU has received 35 Atypical Findings and only two have resulted in charges. To ensure fair representation, HISA has also appointed an Ombudsman to help guide Responsible Persons who have questions about their cases and the process and has established a pro bono program to match those who meet certain income and asset requirements with attorneys who have agreed to provide legal services at no cost. The HISA Board and ADMC Committee extends its appreciation to the vast majority of racing participants who operate in compliance with HISA's ADMC rules and share our commitment to the highest standards of safety, integrity and welfare. Our broad definition of Banned Substances as any substance without a legitimate, medically justified use in Thoroughbreds aligns with this high standard for protecting equine athletes from harm. Charles Scheeler is the Chair of HISA Board of Directors. Scheeler is a retired partner at DLA Piper, ran investigations in performance-enhancing substance use in Major League Baseball. Pennsylvania State University investigation in the Big Ten Conference and safety practices within the University of Maryland football program. Prior to joining DLA Piper, Scheeler was a federal prosecutor in Maryland.
