It was his first start on the year, but 'TDN Rising Star' Timberlake (c, 3, Into Mischief–Pin Up (Ire), by Lookin At Lucky) made it count as he outlasted all challengers to win the GII Rebel S. and continue his march to the first Saturday in May by securing 50 points. Set off the pace as a trio of intent frontrunners disputed affairs early, he was called on for more as the field closed ranks midway on the final turn, and responded from the grandstand side as he inhaled those leaders coming into the lane. Despite drifting in the later stages, Timberlake was able to open his advantage to a clear margin as Northern Flame (Flameaway) and Common Defense (Karakontie {Jpn}) came calling as potential late problems during the scramble for the minor awards. In a 28-1 shocker, Lemon Muffin (f, 3, Collected–Pelt, by Canadian Frontier) ended her four-race runner-up streak to break her maiden, pick up her first black-type, and score her first Graded victory in the GIII Honeybee S. as well as take home 50 points toward the Kentucky Oaks trail. Never far from the leaders while traveling comfortably in midpack, she launched her winning bid entering the lane, and despite contact with Tapit Jenallie (Tapit), kicked home to win with open air between them. A jockey's objection from the runner-up was quickly dismissed. West Omaha (West Coast) kept on to collect third. With her victory here, it tallies as jockey Keith Asmussen's first career Graded stakes win as well as give conditioner D. Wayne Lukas the hat trick on the day. #7 Lemon Muffin ($58.20) breaks her maiden impressively in the Honeybee Stakes (G3)! Unbeaten 'TDN Rising Star' Doncho (g, 3, Mo Town–Sassy Redhead, by Henny Hughes), an eye-catching winner in a pair of attempts going six furlongs at Fair Grounds this winter, is aiming to make his next start in the $400,000 Lafayette S. at Keeneland Apr. 5. “We've got the Lafayette circled as his next spot opening day at Keeneland,” trainer Michelle Lovell said. “We'll see if he'll stretch out to seven furlongs. I think that he will.” Gelded as a juvenile last September, Doncho lit up the tote board with a powerful, five-length tally in front-running fashion at 21-1 on debut Dec. 30. He earned his 'Rising Star' badge by 4 1/2 lengths–this time as the even-money favorite–with a press-and-pounce victory in an optional claimer Feb. 13. Both performances netted matching 94 Beyer Speed Figures. “I think he could be anything,” Lovell said. “We've never really asked him for anything yet. Everything that he's done has been on his own.” She continued, “He hasn't been a surprise because he's been a good horse, but it was a surprise that he went so fast, so easily, in his first race. To come back, I thought that he could win, but you never know, they're babies and they could make mistakes. But he's so professional. So far, everything has gone so well.” As for the decision to geld Doncho as an unraced 2-year-old last year, Lovell added, “We just thought it was best for him physically and mentally at the time.” Doncho brought $72,000 from Jose A. Lopez's JAL Racing following a :9 4/5 bullet breeze out of the GOP Racing Stable consignment at last year's OBS June sale. Bred in Kentucky by Susan Young, he was previously a $32,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by GGS Legal Racing. He RNA'd for $12,000 as a short yearling at Keeneland January. The first 'Rising Star' for young Coolmore sire Mo Town, Doncho was produced by the unraced mare Sassy Redhead. This is the extended female family of GISWs Madcap Escapade (Hennessy), Mi Sueno (Pulpit) and Dubai Escapade (Awesome Again). Members of the press haven't been the only ones ringing Lovell's phone to chat about Doncho. “After his first race we got a ton of interest,” Lovell said. “Mr. Lopez thought about it. He definitely had some offers that would make you sit back and think for a bit. It took him a few days and he said, 'Nope, I'm keeping him.'” Damon's Mound & Michelle Lovell following the 2022 Saratoga Special | Susie Raisher She continued, “We're super excited about him. He's a young horse and is still developing and we're really proud of the way he behaves. He's a big bodied and very muscular horse and he's letting his front end catch up to his hind end the last couple of months. He's a lot of fun.” Fellow Lovell-trained 'Rising Star' Damon's Mound (Girvin), meanwhile, is currently enjoying some “deserved downtime” at Apple Ridge Farm in Kentucky. The 2022 GII Saratoga Special S. winner and 2023 GII Gallant Bob S. winner was last seen finishing fourth in the GI Malibu S. at Santa Anita Dec. 26. “We'll have him back at Churchill before too long,” Lovell said. Wow! A star could be in the making as #6 DONCHO ($4) was impressive again in race 7 at the Fair Grounds and is now 2 for 2 in his young career. The 3yo son of Mo Town was ridden by @jaimetorresjcky and is trained by @MichelleLovell. Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Sunday's Observations features a half-brother to undefeated Arc hero Ace Impact (Ire) (Cracksman {GB}). 13.03 Cagnes-sur-Mer, Cond, €26,000, 3yo, 10f (AWT) ARROW EAGLE (FR) (Gleneagles {Ire}) made an instant impression at this track last month and is turned out again at the venue that saw the launch of his illustrious half-brother Ace Impact (Ire) (Cracksman {GB}) 12 months ago. Waltraut Spanner's homebred colt, who is also under the care of Jean-Claude Rouget, meets five rivals including the fellow course winner Shaloha (Ger) (Le Havre {Ire}), a Philippe Decouz-trained daughter of the G2 German 1000 Guineas third Shalona (Fr) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). By Jonny Turner Pinseeker goes into his toughest career test in the Fruit Bowl Handicap at Cromwell on Sunday as ready as he can be. The four-year-old returns to racing after creating a big impression in his three starts late last year for trainer-driver Jonny Cox. Pinseeker will step up to race hardy opposition in the pacing feature on the second day of Cromwell’s big two-day February meeting. Cox thinks he has the pacer as ready as he can be for his returning assignment. “We think he is a pretty handy horse and in the right grade,” the trainer-driver said. “While he isn’t any sort of certainty, if he can step and do things right they will know he is there.” Pinseeker warmed up for his Cromwell trip with a strong trial win on grass at Methven recently. “We gave him a freshen up and earmarked this race for him.” “We brought him down to Cromwell on Thursday and he has settled in well.” “The trial was good, without being disrespectful it probably wasn’t a strong field but he did run a pretty good last 400m.” Pinseeker is two-from-two on grass tracks and two-from-two in standing start races heading into Sunday’s feature. While the horse is a safe beginner, he is yet to show he is a standing start flyer. “He has been safely away in his two starts, but he hasn’t been fast out.” “That probably isn’t ideal, but hopefully he can get away safely again and he can settle handy enough to them.” Pinseeker opened the $4 favourite for the Fruit Bowl Handicap before he was quickly backed into $2.70 odds. Cox’s fiancé Kimberly Butt drives one of the main threats to Pinseeker in the third favourite Lester ($6). The pacer led and fought on gamely behind Jordy at Cromwell on Friday. Done Rockn looks another big chance following his eye-catching third in the same race. Handicaps are set to play a crucial role in the feature trot at Cromwell on Sunday. Maui was a powerful winner of the corresponding race at the same track on Friday. The trotter overcame a 20m handicap with the help of a brilliant beginning to beat race rivals Pyramid Mystic and Sally Lindenny. The pair both meet Maui 10m better off when he goes back to a 30m handicap on Sunday. One Two Menny missed Friday’s trot but comes into Sunday’s second day after producing a powerful win in his last start on the Cromwell track in January. View the full article

4th-Gulfstream, $70,000, Msw, 2-24, 3yo, 1 1/8m, 1:51.08, ft, neck. CORPORATE POWER (c, 3, Curlin–Road to Victory {GSW-USA, SW-Can, $248,336}, by Quality Road), featured in Steve Sherack's 'Second Chances' series following a useful debut fourth-place finish behind the promising duo of Speak Easy (Constitution) and Victory Avenue (Arrogate) after getting bumped at the break going seven furlongs in a very live maiden special weight going seven furlongs on the Pegasus World Cup undercard Jan. 27, delivered as the 6-5 favorite in thrilling fashion here. Stretching out to 1 1/8 miles, the $925,000 KEESEP yearling broke in and brushed with Batten Down (Tapit), a son of champion Close Hatches (First Defence), leaving the stalls. Ridden along in fourth by Javier Castellano rounding the clubhouse turn, Corporate Power was encouraged to keep pace while in that same position as Batten Down showed the way through a half mile in :47.86. Corporate Power loomed up with a nice move while three deep on the far turn, but Batten Down was going the much easier of the two and Paco Lopez let it out a notch as they turned for home. Batten Down looked well on his way in the stretch, but Corporate Power wasn't done yet despite racing greenly and attempting to lug in repeatedly. Corporate Power and Sturdy (Mitole) both began to lift as Batten Down tired late. Corporate Power, much more focused racing in between horses now, seemed to want it the most of the trio and was able to eke out a neck victory over Batten Down in a blanket finish. It was another neck back to Sturdy in third. Corporate Power's dam Road to Victory, a winner of her first three career starts at two, highlighted by a neck victory over subsequent two-time champion Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) in the GII Golden Rod S., brought $1.45 million from breeder Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings in foal to War Front at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November sale. Road to Victory produced a colt by Into Mischief in 2023 and a filly by Not This Time this year. Sales history: $925,000 Ylg '22 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-0, $44,800. Having just missed out on one of America's top prizes when second to National Treasure (Quality Road) in last month's GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S., SENOR BUSCADOR (h, 6, Mineshaft–Rose's Desert, by Desert God) took down the world's richest pot Saturday with a dramatic, last-gasp victory in the $20-million G1 Saudi Cup at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh. The early pace of the Saudi Cup was expected to be white-hot, and so it proved, as the locally owned, by American-based Saudi Crown (Always Dreaming) was in the early mix along with National Treasure and Saudi representatives Power in Numbers (Girvin) and Carmel Road (Quality Road). Senor Buscador, who saves his best for a finish, raced right back at the tail with G1 Dubai World Cup hero Ushba Tesoro (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}), who missed the break as is his unfortunate custom. White Abarrio (Race Day) got a good spot behind the pace from the one hole and was well-spotted, as Saudi Crown continued to lead them into the straight. As they turned in, it became apparent that it would not be White Abarrio's day, as he went up and down, but Ushba Tesoro was beginning to find his best stride and Senor Buscador coat-tailed that move. Saudi Crown held the call deep into the final 100 meters, and Ushba Tesoro speared through looking the winner, but Junior Alvarado conjured up one final surge from Senor Buscador, a move that failed at Gulfstream four weeks ago, but one that was worth $10-million this time around. The final time was 1:49.50. O-Sharaf Mohammed Al Hariri & Joe R Peacock Jr; B-Joe R Peacock Sr & Joe R Peacock Jr (KY); T-Todd W Fincher. By Brigette Solomon Cambridge driver Benjamin Butcher reckons he’s got some place chances at least with his book of six drives at his home track today. “I have a few that, with a bit of luck, I think can finish in the top three, says Butcher. “My three drives for Mike Berger are probably the ones I’ll be most looking forward to.” Of those three, Rockafilly is the first of the Berger runners in Race four, the Watchu Security Mobile Pace. The mare most recently finished fifth when racing at Manawatu but does drop in company for this afternoon’s assignment. “She’s been racing well and the starting draw of ten will suit her, says Butcher. “I think she has ability to match the field well.” In Race six, the Woodlands Stud Thanks Buyers Mobile Pace, Butcher and Berger combine with Barbarossa. The gelding is in a vein of good form scoring a win and a second at Manawatu in his previous two starts. “He has been racing well but has a bad draw so it will be tough from out there for him, says Butcher. “If he can get handy enough he should stick on well but the two Hollis and Robertson horses (Two Eye See and Bet West) could be hard to beat.” Butcher’s final drive for Berger is Oceanic Art in Race seven, the Night of Champions Tickets On Sale Now Mobile Pace. The four-year-old mare most recently ran third at Manawatu after leading up before being worn down late to be beaten by Eastwood Dream by half a length. “She’s drawn well and meets a weaker field than what she has been racing and I think she’ll be a top three chance,” says Butcher. “I think Oceanic Art and Rockafilly are my best chances of the day.” Of his other drives Butcher also thinks Itbetterbenow for trainer Susan Branch in Race one, the Hire A Venue At Cambridge Raceway Handicap Trot, can feature in the placings. The gelding finished fifth here on Friday after a brief gallop in the home straight. “He steps well and has been improving with racing and I think he can feature in the first three with everything going well” says Butcher. Butcher also drives Dreams Are Bettor in Race three, and Sonsofthemerch in Race five. Race one gets underway at 2:14pm. View the full article

TOWER OF LONDON (IRE) (c, 4, Galileo {Ire}-Dialafara {Fr}, by Anabaa) gave the Coolmore partners a dramatic, last stride victory in the 3000-metre $2.5-million G3 Longines Red Sea Turf H. at King Abdulaziz Racecourse on Saturday. It was jockey Ryan Moore's 18th ride and first win at the fledgling meeting, and trainer Aidan O'Brien's third runner and first winner, as well. The listed winner blew the break, and Moore steered him over to the fence, where they loitered for the majority of the race as Libyan Glass (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) raced at the head of affairs while pressed by Iron Barows (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) and Echt (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}) perched in third. The strung-out field began to bunch midway on the last of three turns. Right about the time Iron Barows tackled his countrymate in earnest, Moore and Tower Of London began to shift around runners for their bid in desperate need of gaps and getting them, 500 metres from home. Enemy (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}), second in this race a year ago, opted for route closer to the inside under Richard Kingscote, and they seized the advantage as the Japanese contingent ran out of steam in the straight proper. G2 Yorkshire Cup S. hero Giavellotto (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) was also coming with a strong run and he rushed up to Enemy's throatlatch. That duo seemed to have the race at their mercy for a second or two, before Tower Of London responded gallantly to Moore's efforts, and unleashed a determined rally to pip Enemy by a head on the line. Giavellotto was a game third. Lifetime Record: 9-4-1-0. O-D Smith, Mrs J Magnier, M Tabor, Westerberg. B-Lynch Bages, Ltd. & Camas Park Stud (Ire). T-Aidan O'Brien. J-Ryan Moore. Sir Alex Ferguson, Ged Mason and Fred Done's SPIRIT DANCER (GB) (g, 7, Frankel {GB}–Queen's Dream {Ger}, by Oasis Dream {GB}) gilded his Middle Eastern sojourn with a closing victory in the $2-million G2 Howden Neom Turf Cup at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh on Saturday. The blaze-faced bay stormed past the leaders to win handily, with Japan's Killer Ability (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) taking second for Japan about a half-length back. Calif (Ger) (Areion {Ger}) also made up some late ground to pass stretch leader Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) for third.
