With a strong leg kick late, Good Lord Lorrie (Hard Spun–Spinning Wheel, Smart Strike) took home his first black-type win of his career in the Woodhaven S. at Aqueduct on Saturday afternoon. The chestnut was last seen breaking his maiden at Saratoga last summer. Off as a 5-2 shot here, the 3-year-old watched as a pair sped off to an early lead into the first turn. However, the two pacesetters began to lose steam at the end of the backstretch. In the meantime, Good Lord Lorrie started to get underway. Entering the lane, as The Big Torpedo (Big Brown) made his bid for the top prize with a furlong left, the George Weaver trainee dug down, found the right gear and got up just in time for the win. Sugar Kun (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn})–a half-brother to Kitasan Black (Jpn) (Black Tide {Jpn}), Japan's Horse of the Year in both 2016 and 2017–put himself in contention for top honours with a narrow victory in Saturday's G2 TV Tokyo Hai Aoba Sho at Tokyo Racecourse, cementing his place in next month's G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) over the same course and distance. Trained by Hisashi Shimizu, Sugar Kun was partnered by legendary jockey Yutaka Take, the regular rider of Kitasan Black and a six-time winner of the Tokyo Yushun. Gradually Sugar Run made his way to the front, taking over from the tiring Win Maximum (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) inside the final furlong, and he just did enough from there to hold off the fast-finishing Shonan la Punta (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) by a head, with Dual Wielder (Jpn) (Yoshida {Jpn)} also running on well from rear to take third. Light Up Racing, an industry collective which seeks to counter negative reporting and perceptions about horse racing, issued the following statement Saturday about the Hulu/FX/New York Times documentary “Broken Horses,” which debuted Friday. The statement is printed in its entirety. “The recent FX documentary 'Broken Horses' has cast a spotlight on the historical issues and implications of illegal doping in horse racing. The presentation attempts to address significant challenges within the industry, particularly focusing on the critical issue of racehorses sustaining life-ending injuries and the urgent need for reforms to address doping and medication use. As Broken Horses highlights, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) is now providing the sport with independent federal oversight for the first time in history, encompassing comprehensive veterinary protocols, enhanced track and jockey safety, and a stringent anti-doping and medication control program. While not in place to address the devastating clusters of fatalities at Churchill Downs in 2023, we can look forward to a safer future under HISA's leadership integrity. Strategically released just a week before the Kentucky Derby, the documentary unsurprisingly leans into historical drama and sensationalism to boost viewership, focusing on illegal activities that thankfully resulted in imprisonment for the inexcusable acts. Reporting did not, however, emphasize a 34 per cent reduction in the equine fatality rate over the last 15 years, the result of the significant progress already made towards safer racing practices. Additional equine safety changes made in the last 24 months, under-represented in the documentary's narrative, include: Every Thoroughbred is required to have a pre-race veterinary inspection every time it races to help ensure horses with pre-existing injuries do not compete. HISA receives close to 3,000 veterinary treatment reports each day. Artificial intelligence is being used to examine compiled data, flagging any horses entered to race who may present potential risk factors for injury. This is similar to how other sports, like the NFL, are utilizing data and AI to enhance player safety. Wearable technology has been implemented, similar to that used in human sports, to identify at-risk horses by the algorithms that are generated in the process of training and racing. Huge investment in onsite or expedited access to advanced diagnostic imaging like PET scans (an enhanced bone scan), MRIs, and CT scans allow trainers and vets to detect hard-to-identify precursors to injuries. There is now a national vets list that places all horses unfit to compete on a comprehensive list that monitors Thoroughbreds throughout their careers. The void claim rule deters entry of horses with health or soundness issues into claiming races. It is imperative that the progress and efforts of countless individuals dedicated to the daily care and safety of racehorses are acknowledged and not overshadowed by dramatized reporting. The assertions in the presentation that leading trainers 'abuse' horses and neglect basic care are not only unfair but are also logically inconsistent with the practices necessary to prepare elite Thoroughbred athletes to race successfully. Light Up Racing is in full support of all reforms that will push horse racing to achieve the highest standard in equine welfare and transparency, with the goal of positioning our industry for a sustainable future. The Retirement Assistance and Care for Equines (R.A.C.E) Fund will host its annual fund drive beginning with an online auction, the organization announced Saturday. Willie Mullins became the first Irish trainer to take the British National Hunt Trainer's crown in 70 years after his El Fabiolo (Fr) (Spanish Moon) ran second to Jonbon (Fr) (Walk In the Park {Ire}) in the G1 bet365 Celebration Chase at Sandown on Saturday. Mullins also saddled winners Minella Cocooner (Ire) (Flemensfirth) and Impaire Et Passe (Fr) (Diamond Boy {Fr}) to win the bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase and the G2 bet365 Select Hurdle, respectively during the bet365 Jumps Finale card. Overall, Mullins trained 28 winners to victories in the UK, with his total prize-money standing at £3,489,256. Vincent O'Brien was the last Irish trainer to take the British jumps title back in 1953/54 prior to Mullins. Mullins said, “It's fantastic to be champion trainer. Dermot Weld's stable has yet to fire on all cylinders and, having set the ball rolling with Cork maiden winner Spoken Truth (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) on Friday, made its mark on the pattern-race scene when Ezeliya (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}–Eziyra {Ire}, by Teofilo {Ire}) swooped late to register a career high in Saturday's G3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Salsabil S. at Navan. Jockey Lachlan Neindorf celebrated a Group One milestone as he guided Zoustar mare Climbing High (NZ) to the pair’s first Group One victory in the Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville. After stepping slowly, Climbing Star, who carries the NZ suffix, settled near last in a strongly run race. The Phillip Stokes-trained four-year-old spotted the leaders in excess of ten lengths and was down on the inner of the track which jockeys had avoided for most of the day. Neindorf didn’t panic and gambled on a rails run which he gratefully accepted as the majority of the field rolled out towards the middle of the track. Climbing Star dashed into contention and narrowly defeated Learning To Fly (Justify) who came deepest of all, with Benedetta (Hellbent) back in third. It was the first success at the highest level for the twenty-two-year-old Neindorf and he was trying to remain calm immediately after the race, although the emotion of the moment was clearly playing out as he accepted congratulations from well-wishers. “I’m trying to keep it together but it was a really good win,” Neindorf said. “She stumbled at the start as I wanted to be a lot closer and from that point on, I just went bugger this, let’s go back to the inside and try and ride a race. “We got the favours and here we are. “A lot was going through my head and I was just trying to treat it like another race, thinking I’d cut my losses and run home into a place with even luck but this is very special. “This is for everyone in the Stokes stable and for my family and everyone here.” Stokes had been cautiously confident in the buildup regarding the chances of both his runners, with Stretan Angel (Harry Angel) also engaged and felt the outside barrier for Climbing Star might be to her advantage although those thoughts went out the window as the barriers opened. “I thought the outside barrier may not be as bad the way the track was playing,” he said. “She has been aimed at this, was third up and going super so we thought she would give a sight. “When I was watching the race, I was thinking what is happening here as we were meant to be on the outer, but it is just great for Lachie to get the win. “I’ve got some really good friends in this horse so it is a big thrill. “She has just come of age and is starting to blossom and she has a big Spring ahead of her.” Bred by Sheikh Fahad and the Royal Family of Qatar under their Qatar Bloodstock banner, Climbing Star is out of the Fastnet Rock mare Bryony, who visited Windsor Park Stud stallion Charm Spirit on three occasions, with that stallion raced by Qatar Bloodstock. Handy three-year-old Lantern Way (NZ) (Satono Aladdin) returned to his best at Wanganui on Saturday with the aid of a gear change paving the way for a visit to the winners’ enclosure following the running of the Commdives NZ 3YO (1340m). The strapping son of Satono Aladdin had looked to have immense promise when he took out the Gr.2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m) at Hastings back in September last year, and followed up with a meritorious fifth in the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) before heading to the spelling paddock. Much was expected upon his return to racing last month but a middling effort for seventh in the Gr.2 Wellington Guineas (1400m) at Trentham and an abject failure next up at the same venue left trainer Lisa Latta scratching her head. The Manawatu mentor added a tongue tie to his gear for Saturday and he produced in fine style as he stormed home in the hands of Jonathan Riddell to head Matamata filly Loch Katrine (NZ) (Ardrossan) in the shadows of the post and register his second career victory. “We left Wellington pretty dejected three weeks ago as he was gone a long way out,” Latta said. “We couldn’t put it down to a lot, so we added the tongue tie, and he looked super today. “I was a little bit worried about the real heavy track (Heavy 8) but he has dug deep to win. “While the weather is still good, we will put him out for six weeks then have him ready for Hastings in the Spring. “He has always shown a lot and he is an absolute beauty.” Riddell also made mention of his disappointment in Lantern Way’s Trentham run. “I was so frustrated last start as I went to races and thought he would win but he dropped out,” he said. “He went through his gears today coming around the corner and that tongue tie has helped. “He is a lovely horse, so nice around the stable and he is one on my favourites.” Lantern Way was bred by Rich Hill Thoroughbreds, who will stand his sire Satono Aladdin for a service fee of $65,000 +GST for the 2024 breeding season. Local trainer Phillip Stokes and young jockey Lachlan Neindorf pulled off a major upset in the 2024 Robert Sangster Stakes at Morphettville on Saturday, with their mare Climbing Star saluting at a juicy $26 price. The four-year-old Zoustar daughter arrived in peak form, following a win in the Listed Matrice Classic (1200m) and a narrow second to Benedetta in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m). Climbing Star claims Group One honours at Morphettville. Photo: Atkins Photography Jockey Lachlan Neindorf celebrated a Group One milestone as he guided Zoustar mare Climbing High to the pair’s first Group One victory in the Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville. After stepping slowly, Climbing Star, who carries the NZ suffix, settled near last in a strongly run race. The Phillip Stokes-trained four-year-old spotted the leaders in excess of ten lengths and was down on the inner of the track which jockeys had avoided for most of the day. Neindorf didn’t panic and gambled on a rails run which he gratefully accepted as the majority of the field rolled out towards the middle of the track. Climbing Star dashed into contention and narrowly defeated Learning To Fly who came deepest of all, with Benedetta back in third. 2024 Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes Replay – Climbing Star It was the first success at the highest level for the twenty-two-year-old Neindorf and he was trying to remain calm immediately after the race, although the emotion of the moment was clearly playing out as he accepted congratulations from well-wishers. “I’m trying to keep it together but it was a really good win,” Neindorf said. “She stumbled at the start as I wanted to be a lot closer and from that point on, I just went bugger this, let’s go back to the inside and try and ride a race. “We got the favours and here we are. “A lot was going through my head and I was just trying to treat it like another race, thinking I’d cut my losses and run home into a place with even luck but this is very special. “This is for everyone in the Stokes stable and for my family and everyone here.” Stokes had been cautiously confident in the buildup regarding the chances of both his runners, with Stretan Angel also engaged and felt the outside barrier for Climbing Star might be to her advantage although those thoughts went out the window as the barriers opened. “I thought the outside barrier may not be as bad the way the track was playing,” he said. “She has been aimed at this, was third up and going super so we thought she would give a sight. “When I was watching the race, I was thinking what is happening here as we were meant to be on the outer, but it is just great for Lachie to get the win. “I’ve got some really good friends in this horse so it is a big thrill. “She has just come of age and is starting to blossom and she has a big Spring ahead of her.” Horse racing news View the full article
