  1. A stable deep in champion-caliber runners delivered a fourth Eclipse Award as outstanding trainer to William "Bill" Mott. Cody's Wish gave the Hall of Fame trainer a season he'll never forget.View the full article
  2. Cheveley Park Stud's remarkable mare, Inspiral, has gone from strength to strength, and 2023 proved to be her strongest yet, capping the year with a victory in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) Nov. 4 at Santa Anita Park.View the full article
  3. Irad Ortiz, Jr., who continued to break earnings records in 2023, won his fourth Eclipse Award as champion jockey Thursday night in Florida. Ortiz, whose mounts earned $39,192,585 last year, rode Eclipse finalists White Abarrio, Elite Power and Goodnight Olive to Breeders' Cup victories in 2023. The Eclipse Award for leading Apprentice Jockey went to Axel Concepcion. The 18-year-old Puerto Rican led apprentice riders in both wins and earnings having ridden the winners of 199 races and earners of $5,179,154. He was also the leading rider at Laurel Park's spring meeting. 4. Repole Stable and St. Elias Stables' Up to the Mark (Not This Time) and Cheveley Park Stud's Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) were named turf champions during Thursday's Eclipse Award ceremony in Florida. Up the Mark won three straight Grade I events, starting off with the GI Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic in May, adding the GI Manhattan S. in June and the GI Coolmore Turf Mile in October. On championship weekend, he found just European invader Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) too good while trying 1 1/2 miles for the first time in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf. Inspiral secured her spot in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mark Turf via the 'Win and You're In' G1 Prix du Haras de Fresnay Le Buffard Jacques Le Marois. Championship weekend would mark her only start in the U.S., but without a clear domestic standout, that Breeders' Cup win was enough to best Americans not only on their home turf but in the Eclipse Awards, where she was named champion turf female. 5. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott won his fourth Eclipse Award as the nation's leading trainer in 2023. The 70-year-old saddled the winners of 10 Grade I races in 2023, including Eclipse finalists Cody's Wish, Elite Power, and Just F Y I, and his stable recorded earnings of $17.43 million–most ever in his storied career. Mott also earned Eclipse championships in 1995, 1996 and 2011. 6. From the start of the Eclipse Awards in 1971 through last year, just two horses were honored with multiple championships as North America's top male sprinter: Housebuster (1990-91) and Roy H (2017-18). Now, Elite Power joins their ranks.View the full article
  7. Elite Power (Curlin) and Goodnight Olive (Ghostzapper) repeated as Eclipse champion sprinters during Thursday's ceremony in Florida. Juddmonte's Elite Power traveled to Saudi Arabia to begin 2023 with a win in the G3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint. Returned stateside, he won the GII True North S. and GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. before having an eight-race win streak interrupted with a runner-up effort in the GI Forego S. at Saratoga in August. He returned to the winner's circle and earned his second straight win in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint just over two months later. First Row Partners & Team Hanley's Goodnight Olive opened 2023 with a win in the GI Madison S. at Keeneland in April. She won the GII Bed o' Roses S. before finishing second to Echo Zulu (Gun Runner) in the Aug. 26 GI Ballerina H. With that fellow Eclipse finalist injured, Goodnight Olive swept to her second straight win in the GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint. Just days later, the 5-year-old mare sold for $6 million to John Stewart at the Fasig-Tipton November sale. 10. Breeders' Cup-winning 2-year-olds Fierceness (City of Light) and Just F Y I (Justify) have been named Eclipse champion 2-year-old colt and filly, respectively. Repole Stable's homebred Fierceness was tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' following his 11 1/4-length debut victory at Saratoga Aug. 25. Following a dull effort in the GI Champagne S., the bay colt was let go at 16-1 in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile, but he sealed the championship with an easy 6 1/4-length win. Fierceness became the second straight juvenile champion for Mike Repole, who accepted an Eclipse statue for Forte (Violence) last year. George Krikorian's homebred Just F Y I capped an unbeaten three-for-three juvenile campaign with her win in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. The bay filly broke her maiden at Saratoga Aug. 26. She captured the Oct. 7 GI Frizette S. before just holding off Jody's Pride (American Pharoah) to win on championship weekend in November at Santa Anita. 12. Trainers Danny Walker (left) and Arron Tata, and breeder-owner Daniel Nakhle, pictured with Crocetti following his Gr.1 NZ 2000 Guineas (1600m) triumph. Photo: Race Images South There is plenty of excitement surrounding Saturday’s Karaka Millions meeting at Ellerslie, and standout three-year-old Crocetti is expected to kick the night off with a bang when he lines-up in the opening race of the six-race card, the Group 3 Almanzor Trophy (1200m). The Danny Walker and Arron Tata-trained gelding has yet to taste defeat in his six starts to date, including giving breeder-owner Daniel Nakhle his first Group One win when taking out the New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton in November. The son of Zacinto will put his record to the test this weekend, with top horse racing bookmakers favouring him to continue his winning ways, setting him as a red-hot -333.33 favourite. However, he will be met by stern opposition, including the undefeated Stephen Marsh-trained filly Merchant Queen, who has shortened into +450, while +900 third favourite Just A Floozie beat subsequent Group One winner Molly Bloom and Group Three performer Orchestral in her only start to date. Crocetti has been freshened since his elite-level triumph and his conditioners have been pleased with his progress ahead of his first assignment of the year. “He had three weeks off after Riccarton,” Walker said. “He has been working really well, he had a gallop between races last Sunday at Ellerslie, and he went well and is happy. “It was nice to go around Ellerslie before Saturday, and the races were on as well, so he got the feel of it. “It’s exciting to have a horse in on Karaka Millions night, it is going to be a huge night.” Crocetti will carry 60kg from gate three on Saturday and will have the services of in-form hoop Warren Kennedy. “We have drawn three so it’s nice and handy and we can do what we like from there,” Walker said. All going to plan after Saturday, Crocetti will head to Te Rapa a fortnight later to have a crack at weight-for-age level for the first time in the Group 1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m). “Hopefully after Saturday is the BCD Sprint and then we will have to sit down and decide whether he goes to the paddock or we have a look at what else is left for him,” Walker said. 13. Legarto will contest the inaugural $1 million Elsdon Park Aotearoa Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie on Saturday. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) Trainers Ken and Bev Kelso couldn’t be happier with heir glamour mare Legarto ahead of Saturday’s inaugural running of the $1 million Aotearoa Classic (1600m). The Group One winner returned in superb fashion at Ellerslie earlier this month when taking out the Aotearoa Classic Preview (1400m) by two lengths over Saturday race rivals Sacred Satono and Sharp ‘N’ Smart, and she has continued to please her handlers in her work. “She has really thrived since Ellerslie, she has thrived the whole preparation really,” Ken Kelso told TAB NZ. “She has done everything right this prep and I couldn’t be happier with her condition going into the race. All you need is a bit of luck.” Kelso has trained many topliners over his long training career and rates the daughter of Proisir at the top of that list. “I think she is probably the best, and that is a big call when you have Levante and going way back to Love Dance, Xanadu, and many more,” he said. “She has certainly got those attributes that make a great horse – she has got a great temperament, she is a good eater, and everything about her is what you look for in a horse.” Legarto carries the colours of part-owner Philip Brown, who was delighted when he saw gate seven beamed against the Auckland Sky Tower alongside his mare’s name at the barrier draw function on Wednesday night. “It’s absolutely ideal,” he said. “Catherine (wife) asked me when we were driving up what I would like to draw, and I said seven or eight will be perfect. It is a terrific draw and I think even Ken will be pleased. “She is in a great space and Ken and Bev do an amazing job. She will acquit herself very well on Saturday. “It’s exciting, but she has still got to win the race.” More horse racing news View the full article
  14. Mahrajaan winning last year’s Group 3 New Zealand Cup (3200m). Photo: Race Images South Proven stayer Mahrajaan will open his quest for another major distance title when he returns to action at Trentham on Saturday. The Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray-trained import will make his first appearance since he claimed top honours in the Group 3 New Zealand Cup (3200m) at Riccarton. While first-up fireworks aren’t expected from Mahrajaan, the American-bred six-year-old has pleased his connections in his lead-up work. “Each preparation he has got better and better and I don’t think we’ve had him in better order than we’ve got him right now,” Ritchie said. “He looks outstanding and we’re very happy with the condition he’s carrying.” To be ridden by apprentice Lily Sutherland, Mahrajaan will step out at Trentham on his way toward a crack at the Group 2 Auckland Cup (3200m) at Ellerslie on March 9. “We’re probably pleased in hindsight that we didn’t go to the Wellington Cup (Group 3, 3200m) because he doesn’t handle wet ground and the slow track wouldn’t have suited him at all,” Ritchie said. “He had three weeks off after Riccarton and the goal is the Auckland Cup and this is a nice lead-up run, he’ll get back and hit the line well. “It will set him up nicely for the Avondale Cup (Group 2, 2400m) and then three weeks to the Auckland Cup.” There is also a possibility that Mahrajaan could travel further afield this campaign. “The reason we have gone for this program is that it opens up the chance to perhaps get to the Brisbane Cup (Group 2, 3200m) with a couple of runs beforehand,” Ritchie said. A son of Kitten’s Joy, Mahrajaan was a three-time winner in England before he was purchased for 75,000 guineas at the Tattersall’s Horses In Training Sale. “The owners had the faith in me to go and buy him there and the first prep he looked slow, and it didn’t look that great,” Ritchie said. “We always said he needed to go over further, but we didn’t know for sure, so once he put it together and got over the trips he needed, he showed what he’s got. “We believe he’s improved four to six lengths off the New Zealand Cup, and he needs to, the Auckland Cup will be a stronger race and we’re aware of that.” More horse racing news View the full article

  18. by Alan Carasso & Heather Anderson Trainer Chad Summers knows the nooks and crannies of Meydan, having saddled Mind Your Biscuits (Posse) to victories in the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen in 2017 and again in 2018. With Dubai World Cup just a couple of months down the road, the horseman is back in the Emirates for Friday's newly upgraded G1 Al Maktoum Challenge-R2 and is in with a big chance in the form of RRR Racing's Clapton (Brethren). The Florida-bred 5-year-old was acquired privately by these connections last summer and earned a spot in the field for the GI Breeders' Cup Classic with an 8-1 upset in the GIII Lukas Classic S. at Churchill Downs, where he had next-out GII Clark S. hero Trademark (Upstart) a head back in second. The latter races in Saturday's GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. Ironically, Mind Your Biscuits was victorious in the Lukas Classic before finishing down the field in the Breeders' Cup, but Friday, he'll meet nothing of the quality of White Abarrio (Race Day) and Mind Your Biscuits's son Derma Sotogake (Jpn)–at least this time around. Antonio Fresu breezed Clapton in California prior to the Breeders' Cup and is in to ride Friday. “We think that maybe he didn't like being on the inside,” Summers said, referring to the Classic. “He's such a big horse that we'd like him to really get into his rhythm and if we lose a little bit of ground, that's OK. We hope they'll go an honest-enough pace. We're adding blinkers for this, too.” Kabirkhan (California Chrome) is very much the new kid on the block, and trainer Doug Watson wheels him back on two weeks' rest after the colt–eight for nine in Russia–was an extremely impressive winner of a 2000-metre handicap on Jan. 1. “He was showing it at home, but he had to go over and prove it at the races, and I believe he did,” the conditioner said. “He's come out of that race in good shape. Ideally we wouldn't want to be running back in two weeks, but it's a million-dollar Group 1. I think he belongs in it, and whatever he does in it, we're looking forward to the third round and World Cup night.” Atletico El Culano (Uru) (Alcorano {Brz}) was third to the G1 Saudi Cup-bound Isolate (Mark Valeski) at big odds in last year's G2 Godolphin Mile and prepped for this with a defeat of Military Law (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in a course-and-distance handicap Dec. 22. Third in that heat was Walk of Stars (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who can improve for that first experience on the dirt in this spot. Mawj Aiming For Hat Trick Of Meydan Wins In Jebel Hatta It is not every day a GI Breeders' Cup Mile runner-up surfaces in the G1 Jebel Hatta Presented by Longines over 1800 metres of pristine Meydan turf, but Godolphin's Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) will be doing just that in her 4-year-old bow. The diminutive filly, a winner of the G1 1000 Guineas and GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup in England and the U.S., respectively, is trained by Saeed bin Suroor. She was the slimmest of noses behind fellow Godolphin runner Master Of The Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the Mile at Santa Anita last November. “Mawj arrived in Dubai after the Breeders' Cup and had a bit of an easy time,” said bin Suroor, who last won this race in 2019 with Dream Castle (GB) (Frankel {GB}), and trained Mawj to a pair of 2023 conditions race wins over the Meydan lawn. “She's doing well and I'm happy with her. After this the plan is the [G1] Dubai Turf [on Dubai World Cup night at the end of March] and then we will take her back to Europe.” Last-out G2 Zabeel Mile hero San Donato (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), from the yard of Doug Watson, is trying for his first top-tier victory, as is Zabeel Mile third El Patriota (Uru) (Ecologo {Arg}). Julio Olascoaga, who trains the latter said, “He earned the chance to run this race after his good result last time out. The opposition cannot be stronger but we're confident he will continue to run big.” G2 Bahrain Trophy winner Spirit Dancer (GB) (Frankel {GB}), owned in part by Sir Alex Ferguson, is also part of the nine-strong field. Trainer Richard Fahey said, “It's his first Group 1 and a tough race, a proper Group 1 and we're looking forward to seeing him run. Everything is going well and he's in great order. “I'm afraid his owners can't make it this time which is a big shame because I know they were keen to come, but it's just fallen on the wrong day sadly. Sir Alex is used to winning, but he gets a good kick out of it, so let's hope he runs well again.” An Eighth Al Fahidi Fort For Appleby? Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby is gunning for his eighth 1400-metre G2 Al Fahidi Fort, and will saddle both Grade I winner Mysterious Night (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and dual winner Majestic Pride (GB) (Shamardal) in the 12-horse field. Successful in the Summer S. in Canada as a juvenile, the 4-year-old won for the first time since with a four-length drubbing of his foes in a local handicap over this distance on Jan. 19 and is returning just one week later. Already a winner of the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest, King Gold (Fr) (Anodin {Ire}) ran fifth to Kelina (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in the G1 Prix de la Foret at ParisLongchamp on Oct. 1 going the Fort trip and makes his first start back on Friday. “He's settled in really well to Dubai again,” said Marine Henry, wife and assistant to trainer Nicholas Caullery. “He's worked a few times on the racetrack and worked well. This isn't a main objective for him–we're not expecting him to win–but we're hoping to run well.” Shadwell's Danyah (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) stunned the G1 Al Quoz Sprint field at 33-1 last March, and he was a narrow second to the re-opposing Vafortino (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) in the Listed Business Bay Challenge warming up for this on Dec. 22. House Eyeing Blue Point Sprint Sailing into the 1000-metre G2 Blue Point Sprint Presented by Longines over the Meydan straight course on a two-race winning streak, Mehmas (Ire)'s Clarendon House (GB) will be attempting to negotiate the hike between handicap and stakes company. “If he can transfer what he did on the all-weather to grass, then I think it will suit him very well,” said trainer Robert Cowell, who struck at the Carnival in 2012 with Monsieur Joe (Ire) (Choisir {Aus}). “I think the fast ground and plenty of pace will be ideal, it's whether he's good enough to bridge this gap between handicaps and stakes races.” Of his rivals, one of the strongest is Equality (GB) (Equiano {Fr}), who will be attempting softer company after taking the G3 Coral Charge S. in June for trainer Charlie Hills, but failing to hit the mark against several of the best sprinters in Europe later in the year. “On ratings, he should be right up there, but it is his first run after a break and he's probably fit enough to do himself justice but whether he'll be quite 100% is another matter,” said Sam Hoskins, syndicate manager for owner Kennet Valley. The lightly raced listed winner Star Of Mystery (GB), second in the G2 Duchess Of Cambridge S. during her six-start career, defeated GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint third Starlust (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) in a Meydan conditions race on Jan. 12. The Godolphin-owned daughter of Kodiac (GB) sneaks into the field carrying only 117 pounds and will leave from gate 11. Like Father, Like Son In the Guineas? Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa's Asiatic Boy (Arg) took out the 2007 G3 UAE 2000 Guineas in his second local appearance before going on to wallop his Northern Hemisphere counterparts in the G2 UAE Derby two starts later. Seventeen years on, his son Oasis Boy (Arg), a Group 2 winner at home when last spotted July 29 can make his presence felt in Friday's mile event at Meydan. The other South American entrant is Quartier (Uru) (Matterhorn), who has the benefit of a spin around the racetrack on Jan. 5, when he ran on strongly after missing the kick to finish a good second to the well-regarded Ma Yetal (Flameaway), who sits this one out. Both South American-breds must give 10 pounds away to their less-mature rivals. Killer Collect (Collected) makes his 3-year-old debut in the Guineas, having thrashed a field of maidens by 7 1/2 lengths over course and distance Dec. 8, while Military Artist (Munnings) races for the third time in four weeks, having most recently annexed a 1600-metre novice Jan. 12. A Moat By Any Other Name Friday's 1600-metre G3 Firebreak S. features 10 runners, and it is the progressive G3 Prix du Palais-Royal winner Fort Payne (Fr) (Rio De La Plata) who is one of the leading fancies. The Firebreak is not without its challenges, however, as it is his first start on dirt, and his first appearance at Meydan after a career in France. “It's his first time on the dirt but he did well on the Polytrack at home,” said Marine Henry of the G3 Prix du Pin seventh, who is, like the aforementioned King Gold, trained by her husband Nicolas Caullery. A veteran of the desert is Thegreatcollection (Saint Anddan), who secured a popular handicap victory at the ripe age of 10 over 1400 metres here on Jan. 12. Regular reinsman Adrie de Vries has the call, with the duo slotted midfield in gate six. Al Shindagha River's For The Taking? Bob Baffert has saddled Laurel River (Into Mischief) four times, with three wins to show from those Southern California efforts. However, the GII Pat O'Brien S. hero last graced a racecourse at Del Mar in August of 2022, and, despite joining the red-hot Bhupat Seemar barn in October, must overcome any ring-rustiness due to almost 17 months on the bench in Friday's G3 Al Shindagha Sprint. “He is doing really well,” said Seemar of the Grade II winner. “This looks a good place to start him as he hasn't run for a while.” The Juddmonte runner's task is not straightforward, with several rivals more battle-hardened in recent weeks. Chief among them is Colour Up (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), who hails from the Doug Watson stable. The 2023 Listed Garhoud Sprint hero was an encouraging third in the G3 Dubawi S. on Jan. 5. More Black-Type Glory For Siskany? The evening's nightcap is the Listed Al Khail Trophy Presented by Longines over 2810 metres on grass, and Godolphin's trio is anchored by the well-traveled Siskany (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) for trainer Charlie Appleby. Second to Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in the G2 Dubai Gold Cup at the end of March, the gelding claimed the GII Belmont Gold Cup S. in the U.S. two starts later in June, and could not quite catch India (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) when third in the G1 Preis von Europa in September. He ran fifth as the favourite after being outfooted in the GII Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance S. on the dirt at Santa Anita on Nov. 4 and is looking for redemption in Friday's contest.
