  1. Zac Purton chases a fourth win in the Group One contest 14 years on from his first top-level success in Hong KongView the full article
  2. Buoyed by a satisfying midweek success, Stephen Marsh will be hoping to add to his tally on Saturday with a four-strong team engaged at Trentham, including a pair of strong Group One chances. The Cambridge trainer was delighted to see his well-related Pierro filly Moet Down open her winning account at Te Rapa on Wednesday at her fourth appearance. She is the first horse raced by the all-female Heels & Hooves Syndicate, who are supporting a worthy cause with the filly. “They are donating a percentage of their prizemoney to the Breast Cancer Foundation,” Marsh said. He purchased Moet Down for A$200,000 at the Inglis Australia Easter Yearling Sale where she was offered by Coolmore. “Since we bought her, the half-sister (Madame Pommery) won the Thousand Guineas (Gr.1, 1600m) in Melbourne and it’s a family that’s booming,” Marsh said. She is out of the Exceed And Excel mare Cancel, who is a sister to the Gr.1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) winner Earthquake. Marsh will be banking on Moet Down’s victory to be a forerunner to further success at Trentham where he will have stable newcomer Skyman and El Vencedor in the Gr.1 Harcourts Team Group Thorndon Mile (1600m). Skyman is owned by Go Racing and won nine races, including four at Listed level, from Chris Waller’s Sydney operation. He hasn’t raced since December, but is forward to resume. “He’s in good order, his trial was great and he had an exhibition gallop at Matamata. He’s going really well,” Marsh said. Skyman will be ridden by expatriate Kiwi jockey Daniel Stackhouse, who was booked following a surprise call. “We got a message from Mason Stevens, who used to work in New Zealand, saying would you put Daniel on and I said yes, without a doubt. He’s a very good rider,” Marsh said. “It’s hard to split Skyman and El Vencedor, who has drawn nicely and will jump and put himself right there.” El Vencedor won the Gr.3 Eagle Technology Stakes (1600m) two runs back and the Shocking gelding followed up with a solid third in the Gr.2 Rich Hill Mile (1600m) and will again be ridden by Joe Doyle. Marsh’s other Trentham runners are Doddle in The Oaks Stud Remutaka Classic (2100m) and Sako in the Rydges Wellington Airport Premier (1200m) with Sam Weatherley to partner the pair. Doddle returned to her best form at her most recent appearance when the Dundeel mare successfully stepped up to Saturday’s distance at Tauranga earlier this month. “She’s going very well and it’s going to be a great race with $350,000 up. She has certainly done nothing wrong,” Marsh said. A son of Ardrossan, Sako finished a close second at Te Rapa last month in his first appearance for three months. “He was good last start and has an average gate (10), but he does have early speed and looks a nice chance,” Marsh said. 3. Well-performed four-year-old Holymanz (NZ) (Almanzor) has arrived at part-owner Cambridge Stud’s training facility at Karaka to continue his build-up toward a potentially lucrative hit-and-run mission. He is raced by farm principals Brendan and Jo Lindsay with Nicolas De Chambure of Haras d’Etreham, the French base of his sire Almanzor and associate shuttle stallion Hello Youmzain. The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Holymanz sealed his trip across the Tasman for a crack at the $1 million Elsdon Park Aotearoa Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie on January 27 with a dominant last-start win in the Coastal Classic (1700m) at Geelong. “He got here this (Thursday) morning and travelled well and he’s a pretty laid-back fellow, he’s the right horse to travel,” Cambridge Stud chief executive Henry Plumptre said. “The question really is whether he’s up to the very elite level that Legarto is going to bring to that race.” The stud’s private trainer Lance Noble will put the finishing touches on Holymanz leading up to the Classic. “He’ll race in Ciaron and David’s name because he will probably go back there as soon as he’s run and if he finishes top three, we’d probably think about the All-Star Mile (A$5,000,000, 1600m) with him,” Plumptre said. “The most important thing with him was to get him over that fall in the Australian Guineas (Gr.1, 1600m), it took him six months. “Ironically, Legarto won the Guineas because she avoided the interference and we thought at the 300m when he was brought down that he was running into it pretty well.” In the meantime, the farm’s focus will be on Trentham on Saturday with Habana (Zoustar) in the Gr.1 Harcourts Team Group Thorndon Mile (1600m). The son of Zoustar ran fifth after the false start in the Gr.1 TAB Classic (1600m) and then triumphed in the Gr.2 Rich Hill Mile (1600m). “Habana is a horse that has really grown up in the last 12 months. He was a work in progress when we bought him after he won a trial very well,” Plumptre said. “We had stallion aspirations, but he was a very highly strung, nervous individual and couldn’t keep condition on him. “He’s taking it all in his stride now and using his energy in his races rather than before. He’s very workmanlike and wants to win.” Cambridge Stud is also looking forward to the upcoming New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale and offering first crop representatives of multiple Group One-winning sprinter Hello Youmzain at Karaka. “The colt out of Pretty To Sea (Lot 325) is the number one pick. The mare is a half-sister to the stakes winner Bonny O’Reilly and to the dam of Espiona (Gr.1 Coolmore Classic, 1600m),” Plumptre said. “It’s a big family with Glamour Puss (dual Group One winner) under the third dam. This is Pretty To Sea’s first foal and he’s a beautiful colt, big, bold and strong.” Another favourite son of Hello Youmzain is Lot 438, who is out of the Pivotal mare Steer By The Stars. “She’s had a stakes winner (Never Back Down) in England by Kodiac so this is a three-quarter brother. This colt is a very nice horse,” Plumptre said. Among the daughters of Hello Youmzain in the draft, Lot 626 is another eye-catcher. “She’s a beautiful filly out of But Beautiful and she’s had a recent winner (Bella Waters) for Moira Murdoch that we own and to Immediacy,” Plumptre said. The stud-bred son of Tarzino remained unbeaten on Wednesday when he followed up his debut maiden victory with further success for trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young against older opposition at Sandown. Lot 352 is a good-looking Hello Youmzain filly from the Pierro mare River Mist. “She’s out of River Mist and is a strong type with scope and the dam’s got a Spirit Of Boom colt that we kept 20 percent of,” Plumptre said. He sold for A$300,000 at the recent Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale with River Mist a half-sister to the Gr.2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) winner Willow Creek. An overall stand-out in the consignment is Lot 358, a son of a multiple champion stallion Savabeel. “On paper, the Savabeel colt out of Romantic Time would be our number one draft pick because he’s a beautiful type and he’s a half-brother to About Time who won the Sir Patrick Hogan Stakes (Gr.2, 2000m) for us,” Plumptre said. “It’s a very active pedigree and he’d have to be the one we are very optimistic about.” View the full article
  4. Trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson believe Campionessa (NZ) (Contributer) has turned into the perfect package ahead of the Gr.1 Harcourts Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham on Saturday. Their decision to send her for a spell mid-spring following her subpar performance in the Gr.1 Arrowfield Stud Plate (1600m) has proven to be a masterstroke by the Te Akau training partnership. She has returned in career-best form, winning all three starts this preparation, including the Gr.2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1400m), Gr.2 Cal Isuzu Stakes (1600m), and Gr.1 Zabeel Classic (2050m). “She has been in great form,” Walker told TAB NZ. “I think pulling the pin early in the spring when things went wrong was the makings of this whole prep. Her work on Tuesday was really good, so we are happy with her. “When you look at her now, she is really thick set, she has got a great hind-quarter on her, she is just the complete package now.” Campionessa is a $3.30 favourite with TAB bookmakers, ahead of Puntura (NZ) (Vespa) at $5.50 and Habana (Zoustar) at $6.50. The Matamata trainers are also looking forward to lining up last start winner Sense of Timing (NZ) (Time Test) in the Gr.3 New Zealand Bloodstock Desert Gold Stakes (1600m), who was also sent to the spelling paddock in spring when things weren’t going to plan. “We always thought a little bit of her but she was a little bit weak and we have just taken our time with her,” Walker said. “In the spring she had a couple of trials and we said to the owners she wasn’t really thriving, so we put her back out. “This time around she is stronger and eating better. I don’t think it is the strongest Desert Gold field that we have seen, she is in the mix for sure.” Te Akau Racing will also have a two-pronged attack in the Gr.3 NZCIS Wellington Cup (3200m) courtesy of Fierce Flight (Flying Artie) and last year’s winner Leaderboard (Street Cry). Weight is the biggest concern for Walker with Fierce Flight, while he is hoping for some rainfall in Wellington ahead of the weekend to aid Leaderboard’s chances. “I wouldn’t have thought he (Fierce Flight) would end up with 58kg in a Wellington Cup, and just whether that weight is too much we are not sure,” he said. “With Leaderboard last year, it was a brilliant ride of Joe Doyle’s and he got the wet track that he loves. “They are in the mix, but it is very even Wellington Cup field.” View the full article
  5. Nervous anticipation has been in the air in Ebony Turner’s barn this week as the Riverton horsewoman gets set to line-up her first stakes runner at Gore this weekend. Turner, who is in her second season of training, will be represented by last-start winner Drakaina (NZ) (Ace High) in the Listed Liquorland Gore Guineas (1335m) on Saturday, and she is hopeful her filly can gain some valuable black-type. “It is pretty exciting to be lining up my first stakes runner this early on in my career, but also pretty scary at the same time,” Turner said. “She is working really well but it is a pretty tough field, as you would expect. If she brings her A-game to the table she will definitely be competitive. Fingers-crossed she does everything right.” Turner spotted Drakaina in an online sale last year where she was being offered as an untried two-year-old by breeder The Oaks Stud. She was immediately taken by the daughter of Ace High and went to $3,000 to secure her. “I found her on Gavelhouse and fell in love with her. I said to my mum that I have to have this horse,” Turner said. “She is a tough wee filly. She has tested me a few times, but it has paid off.” Drakaina was unplaced on debut at Ascot Park in November before breaking through for her maiden win in impressive fashion in her second start at Gore on Christmas Eve, scoring by 3-1/2 lengths, giving Turner the confidence to push on for a southern Guineas campaign. Drakaina has drawn barrier 11 for Saturday and will be ridden by Rohan Mudhoo. “Ideally we would have preferred an inside draw because she does prefer to go to the front and have clear air,” Turner said. “We will see how the day is panning out and make a plan closer to the race. I like to leave a lot up to Rohan with these more front-runner type horses, he knows how they feel and what they prefer.” If she performs up to expectations on Saturday, Turner said Drakaina will likely head towards the Listed ILT Ascot Park Hotel Southland Guineas (1600m) next month. “If she is competitive on Saturday then we will look to go the Southland Guineas, but we would likely miss the Dunedin Guineas (Listed, 1500m) because I don’t want that quick of a back-up for her,” she said. Turner will also line-up fellow three-year-old filly Caffeinated (NZ) (Belardo) in the Country & Co (1335m), the opening race of the 11-race card. “The nominations for Saturday are incredible, which is great for Southland. It is pretty cool to have an 11-race card,” she said. “Caffeinated had a bad experience in her first start at Riverton so we are taking her to Gore and just hoping for a better experience behind the gates and more of an honest run because she has got plenty of ability as well. “She just needs to take a wee breather and take it all in.” Turner is loving life as a trainer and is glad she plucked up the courage several years ago to approach local trainers Kelvin and Aimee Tyler for a job, and she said the father-and-daughter duo gave her a solid grounding in the sport. “I was self-taught, along with mum, with hacks,” she said. “I got an off the track thoroughbred that made me fall in love with the breed. “I then decided to go down to the local stable of Kelvin Tyler and ask for a job and I worked there for five years. He was really good to me and I learnt a lot. I then had a year off and decided I missed it way too much and instead of coming back to work for someone I thought I would have a crack myself and I am pretty happy with my decision.” View the full article

  7. Campionessa winning the Group 1 Zabeel Classic (2050m) last month. 8. What Ascot Races Where Ascot Racecourse – 71 Grandstand Rd, Ascot WA 6104 When Saturday, January 20, 2024 First Race 12:29pm AWST Visit Dabble Racing will return to Ascot Racecourse this Saturday afternoon, where a nine-race meeting is set down for decision. Although the extremely warm weather is in the rear-view mirror, there is no rain on the forecast for the weekend, which means the track will stay in the Good range for the whole program. The rail will be in the +7m position for the entire circuit, with the first race set to jump at 12:29pm AWST. Best Bet at Ascot: Final Siren Final Siren will return from a six-week freshen on Saturday, where the three-year-old gelding will be attempting to keep his undefeated record intact after winning his first three career starts. The Rebecca Bayliss-trained gelding led from start to finish and won dominantly in a 3YO Open Handicap last start at this track over 1000m, where he defeated Petula by 1.3 lengths. This son of I’m All The Talk will stay in a similar grade but will have some extra challenges on Saturday, as he will have to run an extra 100m and is coming off a break. If Kyra Yuill can find the front without doing too much work, this smart galloper should bring up his fourth straight victory. Best Bet Race 2 – #2 Final Siren (6) 3yo Gelding | T: Rebecca Bayliss | J: Kyra Yuill (58kg) +100 with Picklebet Next Best at Ascot: Fluro Neuro The lethal combination of Grant & Alana Williams and William Pike will combine with the talented Fluro Neuro in the last race of the afternoon. This four-year-old entire has finished in the top four at all three starts this campaign, including an impressive win over 1200m at this track two back. This son of Gingerbreadman was a little unlucky in his most recent start, where he settled near last and tried to make his run through the pack, but never got a crack at the leaders. With Pike taking the reins on Saturday and a solid tempo expected, everything should set up perfectly for Fluro Neuro to win again. Next Best Race 9 – #11 Fluro Neuro (15) 4yo Horse | T: Grant & Alana Willims | J: William Pike (56kg) +260 with Neds Best Value at Ascot: Nurhaci After finishing second behind Harmika at massive odds first-up last start, Nurhaci should get a very good chance to win second-up on Saturday in a similar contest over 1000m. The Peter Fernie-trained gelding settled midfield off the rails and got a nice run in transit before letting down with his finish in the final 300m. However, when the sprint went on, this son of Nicconi was overrun by the winner in the final strides. This seven-year-old gelding needed that run and should be much fitter for this clash with a few rivals that he met last start. Lucy Fiore has retained the ride, and if she can push forward and settle Nurhaci in a similar spot, he can salute for us at good odds with online bookmakers. 9. California Spangle wins the 2022 Group 1 Hong Kong Mile. Tony Cruz believes a gear change and a more favourable weight scenario could pave the way for California Spangle’s form resurgence when the gelding contests the HK$13 million Group 1 Stewards’ Cup (1600m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. Cruz has decided to add cheek pieces to California Spangle after the bay’s recent indifferent form and, with Hugh Bowman aboard from barrier two, the dual Hong Kong champion trainer is optimistic his stable flagbearer is primed to fire. “He’s well. I’ve put the cheek pieces on him and otherwise he looks in great condition,” Cruz said of the 11-time winner, whose best victory so far came over Golden Sixty in the 2022 Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin. Cruz believes California Spangle’s last run when seventh behind Taj Dragon in the Group 3 Chinese Club Challenge Cup Handicap (1400m) on January 1 can be overlooked. “He got knocked down the last race and it was game over,” Cruz said. “I expect him to run well – much better – this time because of the weights.” California Spangle carried 135lb when finishing four and a half lengths behind Taj Dragon but drops to 126lb on Sunday and meets his seven rivals on equal terms. Cruz will also be represented by Beauty Joy, who chases his first Group 1 triumph, having twice won at Group 3 level. “Beauty Joy, at set weights, he’s going to come late. I hope he catches them but he’s going to run well,” Cruz said. Beauty Joy impressed last season at the highest level when runner-up to Golden Sixty in the Group 1 Champions Mile (1600m) and caught the eye last start with a strong-finishing third behind Taj Dragon. With the exception of Golden Sixty, who bypasses the weekend feature after suffering a minor leg issue, Cruz’s pair will face a cluster of elite Hong Kong gallopers headed by Voyage Bubble (126lb), Straight Arron (126lb), Russian Emperor (126lb), Beauty Eternal (126lb), Healthy Happy (126lb) and Fantastic Treasure (126lb). The first leg of Hong Kong’s Triple Crown, the Stewards’ Cup will be followed by the HK$13 million Group 1 Hong Kong Gold Cup (2000m) on February 25 and HK$13 million Group 1 Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2400m) on May 26. 10. What Rosehill Races Where Rosehill Gardens Racecourse – James Ruse Dr, Rosehill NSW 2142 When Saturday, January 20, 2024 First Race 12:30pm AEDT Visit Dabble NSW metro racing returns to Rosehill on Saturday afternoon, with an ultra-competitive 10-race program set for decision. The meeting is scheduled to get underway at 12:30pm local time, and although there are some scattered thunderstorms predicted in the region prior to race-day, there’s no expected rainfall to hit the course proper. We anticipate the yielding surface at the time of acceptances to get a significant upgrade towards the Good to Soft range as the rail moves out +3m the entire circuit. Best Bet at Rosehill: Caballus Formerly trained by Chris Waller, Caballus looks prepared for a first-up assault with the Bjorn Baker barn as the three-year-old colt makes his return after a 115-day spell. The son of I Am Invincible put together a strong campaign, however, seemingly lost his way towards the end of the preparation, only managing to finish four lengths away from Felix Majestic in a BM72 at this course on September 27. A change of environment has seemingly done the trick, with two impressive barrier trials wins catching the eye, with Caballus striding clear in both jump-outs. There’s speed to burn in this contest, and with Joshua Parr smoking the pipe in behind the speed, watch for this guy to be launching late. Best Bet Race 5 – #1 Caballus (5) 3yo Colt | T: Bjorn Baker | J: Joshua Parr (58kg) +150 with Bet365 Next Best at Rosehill: Step Aside Step Aside has started his preparation in terrific fashion, securing a first-up victory before two luckless minor placing performances over the Randwick 1400m. The gelding was crowded for room at a crucial stage two starts back behind Fairway star, and almost grinded home for a win, before getting too far back behind a perfectly rated Luvoir last start on December 30. That latest effort has produced two subsequent winners, with Testator Silens and Excelledus both peaking since, and with the extra 100m being a major positive, we’re confident Step Aside can add to that figure. Next Best Race 8 – #4 Step Aside (1) 4yo Gelding | T: Chris Waller | J: Tommy Berry (58.5kg) +170 with Neds Best Value at Rosehill: Tartaglia The two-year-olds step out in the opening event at Rosehill on Saturday afternoon, and we think Tartaglia sneaks into this field under the radar. The James Cummings-trained Godolphin colt has been hard held in his recent barrier trials, with the latest eight-length margin possibly leaving some punters concerned, but it isn’t a true reflection of how he’s travelling. He’s yet to be fully extended at the jump-outs and we think this son of Too Darn Hot has plenty left to give heading to the races. There’s undoubtedly some talented unexposed types in this field, and at the price, we’re willing to risk Tartaglia being one of them. 11. What Flemington Races Where Flemington Racecourse: 448 Epsom Rd., Flemington VIC 3031 When Saturday, January 20, 2024 First Race 12:15pm AEDT Visit Dabble For a second consecutive Saturday, metropolitan racing in Victoria heads to Flemington Racecourse with 10 races set down for decision. Despite rain during the week, Flemington has come up a Soft 5 at the time of acceptances, with the likelihood of beginning on a Good 4. The rail comes out 9m the entire circuit, which may favour those up on speed in races around the circle. Action from Flemington is set to commence at 12:15pm AEDT. Best Bet at Flemington: Bermadez Our best bet comes up in the opening event of the day as Mike Moroney’s Bermadez steps out over 1600m. The seven-year-old gelding has finished second at all three starts this campaign, including when running second to Holymanz in a much tougher race than this at Geelong on January 6. Race one will suit him perfectly, as he does appreciate a bit of sting out of the ground, and in a small field of six, we know he will be close to the leaders throughout. In the small field, look for Jye McNeil to hold a prominent position from barrier three and not let key market rival Suparazi get too far out of his sights. Bermadez on his day, is the best horse in this race, and if he can finally put it all together, he should just be winning. Best Bet Race 1 – #2 Bermadez (3) 7yo Gelding | T: Mike Moroney | J: Jye McNeil (57.5kg) +100 with Picklebet Next Best at Flemington: Bel Air Bel Air from the Anthony & Sam Freedman barn picked up a well-overdue third career win when saluting at the Flemington 1400m on January 1. Having finished second in each of his three starts prior to the win, Bel Air relished the genuine tempo and was hitting the line as good as anyone. He stays at the track and trip on Saturday, and with the likes of Space Tracker, Helix, Milton Park and British Columbia all looking to hold a forward position, the son of Written Tycoon should get the race run to suit. Damian Lane will have him midfield with cover from barrier five, and with a strong finish, Bel Air should prove too hard to hold out once again. Next Best Race 9 – #10 Bel Air (5) 4yo Gelding | T: Anthony & Sam Freedman | J: Damian Lane (57.5kg) +300 with Neds Best Value at Flemington: Luna Cat Luna Cat was an impressive Flemington 1100m winner on December 20, and as she steps up in grade, we’re confident she can spring a surprise on Saturday. The four-year-old mare from the Ben, Will & JD Hayes barn managed to settle just off the leader’s when winning and seemingly relished being closer to the speed. Prior to that, she hit the line strongly to be narrowly denied by Pink Beau Ty at Cranbourne over 1000m, suggesting she brings great form into this BM78. With a win and a second to her name at Flemington, she clearly appreciates the track, and if Luna Cat can replicate her last start performance, she can salute at a nice price with top horse racing bookies. 12. What Eagle Farm Races Where Eagle Farm Racecourse – 230 Lancaster Rd, Ascot QLD 4007 When Saturday, January 20, 2024 First Race 12:13pm AEST Visit Dabble Brisbane Racing Club will host a very competitive 10-race card at Eagle Farm this Saturday afternoon. Due to rain being forecast on Friday and Saturday, we don’t anticipate the track improving very much from the Soft 5 rating on Thursday. The rail will be in the +1m position for the entire circuit, with the action at Eagle Farm set to kick off at 12:13pm AEST. Best Bet at Eagle Farm: Substantial Peter & Paul Snowden are still seeking their first victory with Substantial in Australia after the ex-European import was sent over to them from William Haggas in March last year. This six-year-old gelding has been running in much better grades than what he will face on Saturday at Eagle Farm. His most recent effort in a Benchmark 100 over 1600m where he finished three lengths behind Grebini at Randwick, would be good enough to win this Class 6 Handicap. After drawing to do no work from barrier one and gaining the services of Ryan Maloney, Substantial should get his best chance to break through in Australia. Best Bet Race 6 – #12 Substantial (1) 6yo Gelding | T: Peter & Paul Snowden | J: Ryan Maloney (55.5kg) +160 with Neds Next Best at Eagle Farm: Black On Beauty Black On Beauty will return from a five-month spell with the benefit of a 1000m barrier trial under her belt for this fresh run. The Tony Gollan-trained mare has only had one preparation for Queensland’s leading trainer, where she won two of her four starts and only missed the placings on one occasion. This daughter of Zoustar will be one of two speed influences, and with the other being Jamaican Rumba, who is drawn outside of her, they should be able to cross the field from wide gates and take up the lead. Angela Jones partnered this mare in her two wins last preparation, so with her jumping back aboard, Black On Beauty will prove very hard to beat. Next Best Race 7 – #9 Black On Beauty (10) 5yo Mare | T: Tony Gollan | J: Angela Jones (57kg) +290 with Picklebet Best Value at Eagle Farm: Yangari Robert Heathcote and Cejay Graham will combine with Yangari in the Benchmark 72 Handicap over 1805m, where they will seek to return to the winners circle after this gelding has recorded three straight third-place finishes over 1600m. After having an eight-week freshen mid-preparation, this son of Spirit Of Boom should be at peak fitness on Saturday, and stepping up to 1800m looks like the ideal step now. With the aid of Graham’s 1.5kg claim, this guy will get into this race very light and will only have to carry 55.5kg. From barrier three, Graham will look to settle Yangari in the first five or six off the rail and get a nice cart into the race around the home corner. Best Value Race 5 – #13 Yangari (3) 5yo Gelding | T: Robert Heathcote | J: Cejay Graham (a1.5) (57kg) +1200 with Dabble Saturday quaddie tips for Eagle Farm races Eagle Farm quadrella selections Saturday, January 20, 2024 3-5-9 7-10-12-14 2-3-4-14 3-6-9 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip More horse racing tips View the full article
  13. Veight, ridden by Damian Lane, winning the 2023 McNeil Stakes at Caulfield. (Photo by Pat Scala/Racing Photos) Co-trainer Tony McEvoy is optimistic about the Group 1 performer Veight’s potential impact at the top level during the upcoming autumn season. The son of Grunt, who finished fifth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) in his last outing, is slated to return over the Australia Day weekend, with potential entries in either the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Friday or the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday. “He’s very good, excellent. He’s on track to either run in the Manfred or the Australia Stakes, we’ll just make up our mind when we have a look at both races,” said Tony McEvoy. “I think 1400 metres (is his best trip for now), the trip that he won the Sires’ at, whilst I don’t think he ran a strong mile in the Guineas, he’ll end up running a mile, he seems to have come back a stronger horse. “The Australian Guineas is still on his radar.” If the McEvoy’s wish to take Veight to the All Star Mile, top horse racing bookmakers are taking no chances with the colt, listing him as a $26 chance in 2024 All Star Mile (1600m) betting markets. 14. Mr Brightside will resume in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes at Caulfield on February 10. (Photo by George Sal/Racing Photos) Four-time Group 1 winner Mr Brightside is gearing up for an official trial at Geelong later this month in preparation for his first-up appearance in the CF Orr Stakes on February 10. Trained by Ben, Will, and JD Hayes, the six-year-old gelding has a busy autumn schedule ahead, including a defence of his All-Star Mile crown. JD Hayes outlined the plans for Mr Brightside’s upcoming races stating he’ll kick off in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m), then the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m), All Star Mile (1600m), and then potentially looking at a tilt at the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m). Hayes mentioned, “It’s his first jump–out (on Thursday), so he’ll just bowl around and have a nice fitness blowout, and then he’ll probably trial at Geelong on the 30th (of January). “We’ve just been ticking him over at home, he’s been getting out in the day paddocks, he’s been loving life, we’ve had really good weather up here (at Euroa), and he’s been the beneficiary of that.” “He looks magnificent, so we’re looking forward to seeing him come through these couple of trials leading up to the first-up run.” Mr Brightside will look to add a second All Star Mile crown to an already impressive record after claiming the race in 2023 and is a $6.50 market elect for the 2024 edition with top horse racing bookmakers. 15. Munhamek (GB) on the way to the barriers prior to the running of the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield on November 18. (Photo by Scott Barbour/Racing Photos) Flemington-based trainer Nick Ryan has set his sights on the prestigious Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) for Munhamek following the gelding’s impressive victory in the Group 3 Damien Oliver Gold Rush (1400m) in his last outing. Ryan sees the upcoming Caulfield feature as a strategic pathway to secure a spot in the coveted All Star Mile (1600m), with the Orr Stakes offering a ‘win-and-you’re-in’ ticket for the $5 million event. In an interview with Racing.com, Ryan expressed his confidence in Munhamek’s chances. “I think the Orr is a realistic option for him. We are chasing a spot in the All-Star Mile with him, which is our ultimate goal, and hopefully, we can get in,” said Ryan. “He had three runs last spring, and he’s hard and fit. He had his last run on December 16. We might be able to catch his key rivals on the hop.” Munhamek hasn’t been seen since claiming the Group 3 Gold Rush (1400m) at Ascot, in what turned out to be a fairtytale finish to Damien Oliver’s career. “He had eight days in the paddock in Perth post-race at the Gangemis’s property. When he arrived back at Flemington, he had put on 20 kilos from when he left. He’s pulled up well. He’s done super. “He’s an older horse who thrives in the stable as he loves being in work.” Top horse racing bookmakers have Munhamek rated as a $51 chance for the 2024 All Star Mile on March 16. 18. Wellington has 12 wins in Hong Kong. Jamie Richards is eager to see what Wellington can do in the HK$13 million Group 1 Centenary Sprint Cup (1200m) on Sunday, January 28 at Sha Tin. No longer the kingpin of Hong Kong’s sprinting ranks – a crown which is now worn by his current sparring partner Lucky Sweynesse – Wellington kicked off his seven-year-old season with a pair of competitive third placings, indicating that even as a veteran, the earner of HK$67.13 million still has the vim and vigour to mix it with his younger adversaries. “He’s going to have to be at the top of his game with Lucky Sweynesse in there but we’re looking forward to next weekend,” Richards said. Wellington is a four-time Group 1 winner. The 2021/22 Hong Kong Champion Sprinter stepped out for a barrier trial on the dirt under jockey Hugh Bowman on Tuesday over 1200m. He clocked 1:10.71s as he overhauled Apache Pass for first spot. “He’s just had a bit of an easy time since the Hong Kong Sprint. The plan was to always give him a maintenance trial here and he seems to be in good shape,” Richards said. Lucky Sweynesse heads the Centenary Sprint Cup entries. Courier Wonder, Duke Wai, Flying Ace, Lucky With You, Packing Treadmill, Sight Success, Son Pak Fu, Super Wealthy, Taj Dragon, Victor The Winner and Whizz Kid are also entered to run. Wellington has had two starts for Richards, most recently in the HK$26 million Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) last month. He was formerly trained by Richard Gibson, who departed Hong Kong’s ranks at the conclusion of last term. “He’ll just do a little bit of work a couple of times next week and that should have him where he needs to be,” Richards said. 19. M Unicorn gives Caspar Fownes a brace. Preparing to unleash quality stayer Straight Arron in the Group 1 Stewards’ Cup (1600m) at Sha Tin on Sunday, Caspar Fownes extended a strong season with a double at Happy Valley on Wednesday night to underpin his reputation as the ‘King of The Valley’. Fownes’ brace lifted the four-time Hong Kong champion trainer to the top of the Happy Valley seasonal standings with 17 wins – one clear of overall championship leader Pierre Ng, whose tally of 44 victories include 16 at the city circuit. Absent on Wednesday night, Fownes scored with Super Contented under Keagan De Melo and M Unicorn, who was partnered by Vincent Ho – Straight Arron’s rider. Joining Fownes in slotting doubles were Ho and Zac Purton, while De Melo snapped a 58-run of outs when the South African coaxed the best out of Super Contented. “It’s been a bit slow for my liking, but it goes that way – you just have to keep positive and bringing my family here tonight was a bit of a positive thing to do,” said De Melo, who was watched by his wife Demi, father Dion and mother Fiona. “Obviously my wife is 110 percent behind me on the good and the bad days as well but it was a nice relief (to win) for me and this horse is on the improve.” Ho sealed a double when M Unicorn finished stoutly after earlier prevailing aboard Win Win Fighter as Francis Lui reached the 30-win milestone for the season. Happy United, who won the Class 3 Hong Kong Club Challenge Cup Handicap (1000m) under Purton, continued Jamie Richards’ strong run at Happy Valley this season. Richards has posted 13 wins for the campaign with 12 of those triumphs materialising at the city circuit. “Happy Valley is great, but Sha Tin has been a very challenging place for us at the moment. Hopefully, we can fix that as we build into the rest of the season,” Richards said. “He’s (Happy United) a young horse and he’s still improving – 1000m suits him round here and he was given a gun ride from a good gate (barrier four), so I’m really pleased to see him win like that.” Purton also combined with David Hayes for the pair’s fifth victory this season when Sunny Baby – originally the first standby declared runner – narrowly won the Class 5 Murray Handicap (1800m). “It was meant to happen. He (Sunny Baby) got in the race, got a good barrier (four) and he got a good jockey. From first emergency he won by a fingernail, so it was a good effort,” Hayes said. Cody Mo struck for the seventh time this term when Crystal Powerful scored under Andrea Atzeni. Karis Teetan moved to 38 wins this season as Happy Trio prevailed for Douglas Whyte, while Harry Bentley sealed his fourth win since the beginning of 2024 as the Ricky Yiu-trained Watch Buddy denied Raging Blizzard. 21. Kyneton trainer Neil Dyer (right) with son James and jockey Aaron Sweeney after they combined to win the Jaytex Construction Cup (1300m) with Munster during the Darwin Cup Carnival at Fannie Bay last August. (Picture: Caroline Camilleri – Darwin Photography Professionals) He has taken horses to Darwin since 2008, but long-time Kyneton trainer Neil Dyer is now looking to relocate to the Top End on a permanent basis. Dyer has won a plethora of big races in July and August during the Darwin Cup Carnival, including three Darwin Cups with Hawks Bay (2011 and 2012) and Royal Request (2017). He will soon take a team to the Alice Springs Cup Carnival (March 17-April 7), but when he returns home he’ll head off to Darwin where he’ll more than likely farewell Victoria. “I want to get my son James going as a trainer,” Dyer said. “He’s keen as mustard and he’s showing good ability in picking horses and the way we train them. “We’re altering a few things and we’re using his ideas. “He’s worked for trainers Nick Ryan and Danny O’Brien at Flemington. “I’ve had a good racing career and it’s time to make sure we can secure James’ future and get him going.” James, who is 22, cared for a team at the start of the 2022 Darwin Carnival when Neil remained at home to monitor extensive renovations and improvements to his Kyneton farm and stables. A pool, treadmill and 10 new stables were added to the 100-acre Edgecombe property, which also accommodates paddocks, a walking machine, and a 900m metre sand track. “I arrived in Darwin at the end of the Carnival two years ago, James was in charge when Kaonic won the Toyota Cup,” Dyer said. “At this stage, my immediate plan is to do a Darwin Carnival like we normally do. “Whether or not we set up a satellite stable with James as my foreman or assistant trainer and I just stay down here and keep this going until we sell the farm is something we’ll consider. “When that happens, I’ll move up and buy a house somewhere near the racecourse – until then I’ve got to stay here. “Darwin has been good to us – we’ve got a lot of friends that are still there today. “Apart from training horses up there, we’ll do a bit of fishing. “The weather at that time of the year over Carnival is fantastic. “You’re also close to the beach, restaurants and the city.” Exciting times ahead, but first up there’s Alice Springs. The Dyer’s hope to arrive in the Red Centre a couple of weeks before Cup Day (April 7) in their quest to win Alice Springs’ biggest race for the first time with Hettinger. The five-year-old gelding was a first up winner at Alice’s Pioneer Park last June before heading to Darwin and winning two races from six starts – he also managed two seconds and two fourths. Before heading back to Victoria, the son of I Am Invincible won the Katherine Cup (1600m) by 7.5 lengths. “I’ve never had much of a go at the Alice Cup, Palmyra Boy finished third in 2012,” Dyer said. “We’re going to take three or four horses to Alice before heading home as there’s now a longer break before the Darwin Carnival,” Dyer said. “The horses can have a few weeks in the paddock getting over the trip and then we’ll still have enough time to do a little bit of work with them before they go to Darwin. “We’re going to give Hettinger four or five runs before the Alice Cup. “He had a 800m trial at Tatura the other day and he’ll have another 1000m trial at Bendigo. “Then we’re going to probably start him off over 1300m. “He might have a mile lead up to the Cup, but he’ll be well and truly fit enough for the job. “Not 100 per cent sure at this stage, but he’ll probably have a run in Alice before the Cup.” Dyer admitted that he will miss Kyneton. Although Darwin will become home in the foreseeable future, he does plan to return to Kyneton to catch up with friends. “I’ve been here 35 years, I love the farm and no matter how cold it is when you return home from Darwin you’ve still got a smile on your face coming home,” he said. “I think it’s time to have a go, if we’re going to have a crack up there the time is now. “Being up there with my son in a training operation together will be good if we can make it work, I’m confident we will. “We’ve done a lot of stuff here at the farm and I’d really love to see someone come in and keep up the maintenance as it deserves to be a showpiece.” Dyer, who sadly lost his brother Rod over the Christmas period, kicked off 2024 with a win at Hanging Rock on New Year’s Day with Missed Victory. 25. No Compromise will contest Saturday’s Group 1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham. Photo: Bradleyphotos.com.au No Compromise was a two-time winner from a handful of starts for Bill Thurlow before successfully continuing his career in Australia and now looks primed to star in his second stint for the Waverley trainer. The son of Pins, who is raced by Thurlow’s brother Grant and sister-in-law Patricia, will step out in Saturday’s Group 1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham and his previous performance suggests he can be a major player. No Compromise won five races from Chris Waller’s stable, including the Group 1 Metropolitan (2400m), before returning to New Zealand and ran in the champion trainer’s name when he finished runner-up in the Group 1 Zabeel Classic (2050m) at Pukekohe on Boxing Day. “He went very, very well and we were all pretty happy. He’s had a couple of hit-outs and handled that well,” Thurlow said. “He’s done really since he’s been home and is enjoying being back here.” Thurlow’s only concern is the 1600m and any softening of the track will be to No Compromise’s benefit. “I don’t think he’s ever won over a mile, but he’s gone some good races and a little bit of rain will help him,” he said. “We’re running him because of the $500,000 bonus for the most points won in the Thorndon, the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Group 1, 2000m) and the Bonecrusher Stakes (Group 1, 2000m), so he needs to run to be eligible.” No Compromise was ridden last time out by Ryan Elliot, who is suspended and will be replaced by Kelly Myers. “Kelly has obviously been off the scene for a while and she rode a lot of winners for me in the early days so it’s good to get her back on,” Thurlow said.
