Photo: Grant Courtney Well-performed four-year-old Holymanz has arrived at part-owner Cambridge Stud’s training facility at Karaka to continue his build-up toward a potentially lucrative hit-and-run mission. He is raced by farm principals Brendan and Jo Lindsay with Nicolas De Chambure of Haras d’Etreham, the French base of his sire Almanzor and associate shuttle stallion Hello Youmzain. The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Holymanz sealed his trip across the Tasman for a crack at the $1 million Aotearoa Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie on January 27 with a dominant last-start win in the Coastal Classic (1700m) at Geelong. “He got here this (Thursday) morning and travelled well and he’s a pretty laid-back fellow, he’s the right horse to travel,” Cambridge Stud chief executive Henry Plumptre said. “The question really is whether he’s up to the very elite level that Legarto is going to bring to that race.” The stud’s private trainer Lance Noble will put the finishing touches on Holymanz leading up to the Classic. “He’ll race in Ciaron and David’s name because he will probably go back there as soon as he’s run and if he finishes top three, we’d probably think about the All-Star Mile (A$5,000,000, 1600m) with him,” Plumptre said. “The most important thing with him was to get him over that fall in the Australian Guineas (Group 1, 1600m), it took him six months. “Ironically, Legarto won the Guineas because she avoided the interference and we thought at the 300m when he was brought down that he was running into it pretty well.” In the meantime, the farm’s focus will be on Trentham on Saturday with Habana in the Group 1 Thorndon Mile (1600m). The son of Zoustar ran fifth after the false start in the Group 1 TAB Classic (1600m) and then triumphed in the Group 2 Rich Hill Mile (1600m). “Habana is a horse that has really grown up in the last 12 months. He was a work in progress when we bought him after he won a trial very well,” Plumptre said. “We had stallion aspirations, but he was a very highly strung, nervous individual and couldn’t keep condition on him. “He’s taking it all in his stride now and using his energy in his races rather than before. Their decision to send her for a spell mid-spring following her subpar performance in the Group 1 Arrowfield Stud Plate (1600m) has proven to be a masterstroke by the Te Akau training partnership. She has returned in career-best form, winning all three starts this preparation, including the Group 2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1400m), Group 2 Cal Isuzu Stakes (1600m), and Group 1 Zabeel Classic (2050m). “She has been in great form,” Walker told TAB NZ. “I think pulling the pin early in the spring when things went wrong was the makings of this whole prep. Her work on Tuesday was really good, so we are happy with her. “When you look at her now, she is really thick set, she has got a great hind-quarter on her, she is just the complete package now.” Campionessa is a +230 favourite with top horse racing bookmakers, ahead of Puntura at +450 and Habana at +550. The Matamata trainers are also looking forward to lining up last start winner Sense of Timing in the Group 3 Desert Gold Stakes (1600m), who was also sent to the spelling paddock in spring when things weren’t going to plan. “We always thought a little bit of her but she was a little bit weak and we have just taken our time with her,” Walker said. “In the spring she had a couple of trials and we said to the owners she wasn’t really thriving, so we put her back out. “This time around she is stronger and eating better. I don’t think it is the strongest Desert Gold field that we have seen, she is in the mix for sure.” Te Akau Racing will also have a two-pronged attack in the Group 3 Wellington Cup (3200m) courtesy of Fierce Flight and last year’s winner Leaderboard. However, when the sprint went on, this son of Nicconi was overrun by the winner in the final strides. This seven-year-old gelding needed that run and should be much fitter for this clash with a few rivals that he met last start. California Spangle wins the 2022 Group 1 Hong Kong Mile. Tony Cruz believes a gear change and a more favourable weight scenario could pave the way for California Spangle’s form resurgence when the gelding contests the HK$13 million Group 1 Stewards’ Cup (1600m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. Cruz has decided to add cheek pieces to California Spangle after the bay’s recent indifferent form and, with Hugh Bowman aboard from barrier two, the dual Hong Kong champion trainer is optimistic his stable flagbearer is primed to fire. “He’s well. I’ve put the cheek pieces on him and otherwise he looks in great condition,” Cruz said of the 11-time winner, whose best victory so far came over Golden Sixty in the 2022 Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin. Cruz believes California Spangle’s last run when seventh behind Taj Dragon in the Group 3 Chinese Club Challenge Cup Handicap (1400m) on January 1 can be overlooked. “He got knocked down the last race and it was game over,” Cruz said. “I expect him to run well – much better – this time because of the weights.” California Spangle carried 135lb when finishing four and a half lengths behind Taj Dragon but drops to 126lb on Sunday and meets his seven rivals on equal terms. Cruz will also be represented by Beauty Joy, who chases his first Group 1 triumph, having twice won at Group 3 level. “Beauty Joy, at set weights, he’s going to come late. I hope he catches them but he’s going to run well,” Cruz said. The son of Grunt, who finished fifth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) in his last outing, is slated to return over the Australia Day weekend, with potential entries in either the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Friday or the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday. “He’s very good, excellent. Trained by Ben, Will, and JD Hayes, the six-year-old gelding has a busy autumn schedule ahead, including a defence of his All-Star Mile crown. JD Hayes outlined the plans for Mr Brightside’s upcoming races stating he’ll kick off in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m), then the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m), All Star Mile (1600m), and then potentially looking at a tilt at the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m). Ryan sees the upcoming Caulfield feature as a strategic pathway to secure a spot in the coveted All Star Mile (1600m), with the Orr Stakes offering a ‘win-and-you’re-in’ ticket for the $5 million event. In an interview with Racing.com, Ryan expressed his confidence in Munhamek’s chances. “I think the Orr is a realistic option for him. We are chasing a spot in the All-Star Mile with him, which is our ultimate goal, and hopefully, we can get in,” said Ryan. “He had three runs last spring, and he’s hard and fit. He had his last run on December 16. Wellington has 12 wins in Hong Kong. Jamie Richards is eager to see what Wellington can do in the HK$13 million Group 1 Centenary Sprint Cup (1200m) on Sunday, January 28 at Sha Tin. No longer the kingpin of Hong Kong’s sprinting ranks – a crown which is now worn by his current sparring partner Lucky Sweynesse – Wellington kicked off his seven-year-old season with a pair of competitive third placings, indicating that even as a veteran, the earner of HK$67.13 million still has the vim and vigour to mix it with his younger adversaries. “He’s going to have to be at the top of his game with Lucky Sweynesse in there but we’re looking forward to next weekend,” Richards said. Wellington is a four-time Group 1 winner. The 2021/22 Hong Kong Champion Sprinter stepped out for a barrier trial on the dirt under jockey Hugh Bowman on Tuesday over 1200m. He clocked 1:10.71s as he overhauled Apache Pass for first spot. “He’s just had a bit of an easy time since the Hong Kong Sprint. The plan was to always give him a maintenance trial here and he seems to be in good shape,” Richards said. Lucky Sweynesse heads the Centenary Sprint Cup entries. Preparing to unleash quality stayer Straight Arron in the Group 1 Stewards’ Cup (1600m) at Sha Tin on Sunday, Caspar Fownes extended a strong season with a double at Happy Valley on Wednesday night to underpin his reputation as the ‘King of The Valley’. Fownes’ brace lifted the four-time Hong Kong champion trainer to the top of the Happy Valley seasonal standings with 17 wins – one clear of overall championship leader Pierre Ng, whose tally of 44 victories include 16 at the city circuit. He (Sunny Baby) got in the race, got a good barrier (four) and he got a good jockey. From first emergency he won by a fingernail, so it was a good effort,” Hayes said. Dyer has won a plethora of big races in July and August during the Darwin Cup Carnival, including three Darwin Cups with Hawks Bay (2011 and 2012) and Royal Request (2017). He will soon take a team to the Alice Springs Cup Carnival (March 17-April 7), but when he returns home he’ll head off to Darwin where he’ll more than likely farewell Victoria. “I want to get my son James going as a trainer,” Dyer said. “He’s keen as mustard and he’s showing good ability in picking horses and the way we train them. “We’re altering a few things and we’re using his ideas. “He’s worked for trainers Nick Ryan and Danny O’Brien at Flemington. “I’ve had a good racing career and it’s time to make sure we can secure James’ future and get him going.” James, who is 22, cared for a team at the start of the 2022 Darwin Carnival when Neil remained at home to monitor extensive renovations and improvements to his Kyneton farm and stables. A pool, treadmill and 10 new stables were added to the 100-acre Edgecombe property, which also accommodates paddocks, a walking machine, and a 900m metre sand track. “I arrived in Darwin at the end of the Carnival two years ago, James was in charge when Kaonic won the Toyota Cup,” Dyer said. “At this stage, my immediate plan is to do a Darwin Carnival like we normally do. “Whether or not we set up a satellite stable with James as my foreman or assistant trainer and I just stay down here and keep this going until we sell the farm is something we’ll consider. “When that happens, I’ll move up and buy a house somewhere near the racecourse – until then I’ve got to stay here. “Darwin has been good to us – we’ve got a lot of friends that are still there today. “Apart from training horses up there, we’ll do a bit of fishing. “The weather at that time of the year over Carnival is fantastic. “You’re also close to the beach, restaurants and the city.” Exciting times ahead, but first up there’s Alice Springs. The Dyer’s hope to arrive in the Red Centre a couple of weeks before Cup Day (April 7) in their quest to win Alice Springs’ biggest race for the first time with Hettinger. The five-year-old gelding was a first up winner at Alice’s Pioneer Park last June before heading to Darwin and winning two races from six starts – he also managed two seconds and two fourths. Before heading back to Victoria, the son of I Am Invincible won the Katherine Cup (1600m) by 7.5 lengths. “I’ve never had much of a go at the Alice Cup, Palmyra Boy finished third in 2012,” Dyer said. “We’re going to take three or four horses to Alice before heading home as there’s now a longer break before the Darwin Carnival,” Dyer said. “The horses can have a few weeks in the paddock getting over the trip and then we’ll still have enough time to do a little bit of work with them before they go to Darwin. “We’re going to give Hettinger four or five runs before the Alice Cup. “He had a 800m trial at Tatura the other day and he’ll have another 1000m trial at Bendigo. “Then we’re going to probably start him off over 1300m. “He might have a mile lead up to the Cup, but he’ll be well and truly fit enough for the job. “Not 100 per cent sure at this stage, but he’ll probably have a run in Alice before the Cup.” Dyer admitted that he will miss Kyneton. Although Darwin will become home in the foreseeable future, he does plan to return to Kyneton to catch up with friends. “I’ve been here 35 years, I love the farm and no matter how cold it is when you return home from Darwin you’ve still got a smile on your face coming home,” he said. “I think it’s time to have a go, if we’re going to have a crack up there the time is now. “Being up there with my son in a training operation together will be good if we can make it work, I’m confident we will. “We’ve done a lot of stuff here at the farm and I’d really love to see someone come in and keep up the maintenance as it deserves to be a showpiece.” Dyer, who sadly lost his brother Rod over the Christmas period, kicked off 2024 with a win at Hanging Rock on New Year’s Day with Missed Victory. Photo: Bradleyphotos.com.au No Compromise was a two-time winner from a handful of starts for Bill Thurlow before successfully continuing his career in Australia and now looks primed to star in his second stint for the Waverley trainer. The son of Pins, who is raced by Thurlow’s brother Grant and sister-in-law Patricia, will step out in Saturday’s Group 1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham and his previous performance suggests he can be a major player. No Compromise won five races from Chris Waller’s stable, including the Group 1 Metropolitan (2400m), before returning to New Zealand and ran in the champion trainer’s name when he finished runner-up in the Group 1 Zabeel Classic (2050m) at Pukekohe on Boxing Day. “He went very, very well and we were all pretty happy. He’s had a couple of hit-outs and handled that well,” Thurlow said. “He’s done really since he’s been home and is enjoying being back here.” Thurlow’s only concern is the 1600m and any softening of the track will be to No Compromise’s benefit. “I don’t think he’s ever won over a mile, but he’s gone some good races and a little bit of rain will help him,” he said. “We’re running him because of the $500,000 bonus for the most points won in the Thorndon, the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Group 1, 2000m) and the Bonecrusher Stakes (Group 1, 2000m), so he needs to run to be eligible.” No Compromise was ridden last time out by Ryan Elliot, who is suspended and will be replaced by Kelly Myers. “Kelly has obviously been off the scene for a while and she rode a lot of winners for me in the early days so it’s good to get her back on,” Thurlow said. Photo: Race Images South Puntura and One Bold Cat have played a starring role in Robbie Patterson’s successful season and the talented pair will cross paths for the first time this preparation in Saturday’s Group 1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham. Puntura has been the breadwinner over 1400m to 1600m, with victories in the Group 3 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile (1600m) and the Group 2 Manawatu Challenge Stakes (1400m), while One Bold Cat covered the middle-distance events claiming both the Feilding Gold Cup (2100m) and the Group 3 Counties Cup (2100m), as well as a game effort for fifth in the Group 1 Zabeel Classic (2050m). Craig Grylls has been aboard both geldings in all but one of those wins and has elected to take the ride aboard Puntura on Saturday, with Wiremu Pinn partnering the son of The Bold One when the pair jump from barrier 7 and 6 respectively. Patterson’s pair had one final hit-out on Tuesday at the Foxton Trials, with Puntura impressing from the front-running position to take out the 1200m heat, while One Bold Cat was ridden quietly into third position. “They were only at the trials for the run, but Puntura is a naturally big, strong galloper so we expected him to do that,” Patterson said. “He’s come through the trial well, so onwards and upwards to Saturday. “I was very happy with One Bold Cat’s trial as well. Jonathan Riddell was told to take him quietly, and he got off and said he was very happy with the horse, and he was lovely to ride. “The mile is just a bit short for him, but if he can get a nice sit somewhere, I’m sure he won’t be far from the placegetters at the finish. He’s a very good horse.” Though both are class gallopers, New Plymouth-based Patterson has different motivations for each horse’s acceptance into the Trentham feature and expects the result to reflect this. A son of Vespa, Puntura’s rise in the Group events gave Patterson every reason to give him a Group One bid, while One Bold Cat is entered to be eligible for the lucrative $500,000 Entain Summer Series Bonus, where he must run in the Thorndon Mile ahead of the Group 1 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) and the Group 1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m). “Puntura will go forward, while One Bold Cat will just take a slot where he ends up. Over a mile, it’s too short for One Bold Cat, but it’s probably the big fella’s (Puntura) ideal distance,” he said. “One Bold Cat has to start in the Thorndon to qualify for the half-a-million dollar bonus, so he’s there to qualify himself really, then head to the Herbie Dyke and the Bonecrusher.” Also making her final preparations at the Foxton trials was Mary Louise, the mare striding effortlessly into second position over 1400m ahead of Saturday’s Group 3 Wellington Cup (3200m). Another progeny of Grangewilliam Stud’s The Bold One, Mary Louise has made a strong account of herself in competitive northern company this preparation, including a surging late run into third in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Cup (2400m) on New Year’s Day. “She’s done well, she trialled up really nicely yesterday as well,” Patterson said. The versatile five-year-old has been victorious in six of her 14 raceday starts, with winning form on all track conditions from 1400m to 2100m, and Patterson has no doubt in her ability to step-up over 3200m on Saturday under Grylls. “She’s a lovely, clean-winded horse and I’ve got no worries about the two miles whatsoever. From that draw (13), she’ll take a backwards position and hopefully get a nice trail into the race.” he said. “Looking at the field, she’s beaten most of them or competed in bigger races, so I’d be disappointed if she’s not thereabouts in the finish.” Mary Louise currently sits a +450 Fixed Odds second-favourite for the Cup with top horse racing bookmakers, with fellow Taranaki-trained galloper Waisake topping the market at +230.
