When 2023 GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner White Abarrio (Race Day) was scratched in the moments before the field loaded into the starting gate for Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar, it was on the recommendation of the on-track veterinarian in a call to the stewards. Some of the horse's connections–comprised of C2 Racing Stable, Gary Barber, and La Milagrosa Stable–have been vocal on social media and in the media in the days since about their disagreement with the call. Tuesday afternoon, C2 Racing Stable posted the following statement on their X account, indicating the retaining of counsel and the seeking of an investigation into the event. The statement appears below in full. “As the co-owners of White Abarrio, we are deeply concerned by the decision fo the Breeders' Cup to scratch White Abarrio from the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile only minutes before he entered the starting gate. White Abarrio had a PET scan at the Breeders' Cup request which resulted in findings normal for a race horse in training. He was also examined every day by Breeders' Cup veterinarians in the week leading up to the race, including on the morning of the race and the veterinarians deemed him fit to race. No problems were noted in the paddock pre-race and jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. stated that White Abarrio warned up 'perfectly' on the track. Despite this fact, for reasons that remain unknown, the Breeders' Cup directed that White Abarrio be scratched right before the race was set to run. “To be clear, the health and safety of our equine athletes is always of paramount importance. On that point, all parties can agree. If there were any facts or circumstances to support the notion that White Abarrio was in any way unfit to race, we would wholly support a decision to scratch him. However, in this instance, there is no such evidence. Based on what we know to date, we are very concerned that the decision to scratch White Abarrio was completely unjustified. It was certainly made for reasons that are unknown to trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. and the ownership group. White Abarrio has raced 24 times throughout his career and we always take the utmost precaution to ensure he is healthy, as evidenced by our full compliance with the pre-race examination protocols. “Given the foregoing, C2 Racing Stable, LLC and Gary Barber have retained counsel and have asked for a full and transparent investigation into this matter. We have requested that the Breeders' Cup, the California Horse Racing Board, and the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club preserve and disclose all relevant documents related to White Abarrio being scratched. “Until such time as we determine next steps, we will not be answering any questions or making any further comments related to this matter.” WHITE ABARRIO scratch from Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile prompts co-owners to investigate protocols. pic.twitter.com/FFBaxYbjt8 — C2 Racing Stable (@C2RacingStable) November 4, 2025 The post C2 Racing Says White Abarrio’s Breeders’ Cup Scratch ‘Completely Unjustified,’ Connections to Retain Counsel appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Seven months after a joint agreement to drop a year-old lawsuit against Camarero Race Track over complaints about a purportedly unsafe dirt surface, the Puerto Rico Horse Owners Association, Inc. (PRHOA) is back in federal court against the island's only Thoroughbred track, alleging that Camarero and a different horsemen's group, the Confederacion Hipica de Puerto Rico (CHPR), have undertaken a “concerted scheme” to exclude PRHOA from simulcasting revenues while at the same time trying to “coerce” PRHOA members to join the rival faction. According to the lawsuit, filed Oct. 31 in United States District Court of Puerto Rico, the defendants, which also include executives from both Camarero and the CHPR, “are jointly engaged in a pattern, scheme, and agreement, as well as acts and omissions, that violate the United States Constitution and other applicable federal statutes [and are] designed to deprive the PRHOA and its members of their rights, benefits, and lawful participation in the horse racing industry.” These allegations represent only one side of the story in a years-long series of regulatory and legal battles between the PRHOA and the track that have been playing out at the gaming commission, state, and federal court levels. The defendants in this new lawsuit could not be reached for comment prior to deadline for this story, but they will have a chance to answer the complaint within a court-mandated time frame. The Oct. 31 lawsuit cited both the Interstate Horseracing Act of 1978 (IHA) and the Puerto Rico Horse Racing Industry and Sport Act in outlining why the PRHOA believes it is entitled to “preliminary and permanent injunctions ordering Defendants to immediately resume and maintain equitable distribution of simulcast-in proceeds to PRHOA” and compensatory and treble damages of “no less” than $500,000. “Camarero, operating under an exclusive license or franchise from the Commonwealth, administers all wagering proceeds under governmental regulation, including simulcasting, making it an instrumentality of the state,” the lawsuit stated. “For many years, prior to PRHOA's creation, CHPR was the only association of horse owners operating at the Camarero Racetrack, consisting of the majority of the horse owners in Puerto Rico,” the lawsuit stated. “On Jan. 23, 2007, Camarero and CHPR entered into a written agreement [that was later] renewed on a month-to-month basis by Camarero and CHPR,” the lawsuit stated. “On Jan. 29, 2013, several licensed horse owners decided to form PRHOA, [which is now] composed of a substantial number of licensed [owners who] own a significant number of Thoroughbreds participating [at Camarero]. As mandated by state law, since PRHOA's creation, Camarero has uninterruptedly distributed simulcast in proceeds to PRHOA's members and nonaffiliated horse owners to either PRHOA or CHPR,” the lawsuit stated. “PRHOA is not a contracting party to the Contract, and the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico expressly so held in a final and unappealable decision,” the lawsuit stated. “However, since PRHOA's organization, Camarero and CHPR unlawfully applied the Contract to PRHOA and its members, deducting sums from the purse earnings of their horses not authorized by the Horse Racing Act, but stemming from the Contract to which PRHOA has never been a party,” the lawsuit stated. “The Contract violates the [Puerto Rico] Horse Racing Act [and] the IHA and it is unconstitutional since it requires racehorse owners to be affiliated to the CHPR to receive simulcast-in proceeds, and it is unconstitutional since it requires racehorse owners to be affiliated to the CHPR to receive simulcast-in proceeds,” the lawsuit stated. “On Nov. 26, 2021, PRHOA filed a suit against Camarero and CHPR in the Puerto Rico Court of First Instance, seeking the return of the illegally deducted funds and an injunction to permanently halt the unlawful practice. The State Case remains pending and unresolved as of this filing,” the lawsuit stated. “In the meantime, Camarero and CHPR [have been] for some time conspiring to harm PRHOA and its members by means of in-person meetings, email correspondence, and other interstate electronic communications to deprive PRHOA and its members of their legal right to receive their share of the wagering on simulcast-in races arising from sources outside of Puerto Rico,” the lawsuit stated. “Via a letter sent on Oct. 17, 2025, following private meetings between Camarero and CHPR, PRHOA received notice that beginning on Nov. 1, 2025, Camarero would cease distributing proceeds from simulcast-in wagering to PRHOA and its members,” the lawsuit stated. “PRHOA has made multiple efforts to persuade Camarero not to do so, but all such efforts have failed. As a result, PRHOA and its members now face imminent and irreparable harm,” the lawsuit stated. “In [a separate state lawsuit], the Puerto Rico Supreme Court further recognized that horse owners have a constitutional right to affiliate-or to decline to affiliate-with any association of their choosing, rights grounded in the freedom of expression and association guaranteed by the Constitutions of Puerto Rico and the United States,” the lawsuit stated. “Currently, Camarero and CHPR are conditioning the payment of monies-belonging by law to all licensed racehorse owners-on those their mandatory membership in CHPR, in direct violation of constitutional protections,” the lawsuit stated. “Camarero's decision to halt payments of proceeds from simulcast into PRHOA's members is arbitrary, lacks any statutory or regulatory basis, was made without notice or hearing, and directly violates Puerto Rico law,” the lawsuit stated. “The exclusion seeks to coerce PRHOA's members into joining CHPR, thereby consolidating political and financial control over the racing industry. If this were to happen, only one racehorse owners' association would forcibly exist,” the lawsuit stated. Peter Nolan and Noel Meade are out on their own as the leading buyers at the Autumn Yearling Sale with their €167,000 spend headed by a Coulsty colt that the trainer labelled “as nice a horse as we've seen at Goffs all week.” The Coulsty colt is the most expensive horse to sell at Autumn Yearling Sale – which comes to a close on Wednesday – thus far. He cost €60,000 and was consigned by Rathasker Stud. All told, the County Meath-based handler has added 10 yearlings to his team for next year at Kildare Paddocks this week. Meade said, “The nice horses are making plenty of money. We have an existing client for the Coulsty and he's probably as nice a horse as we've seen at Goffs all week. He's a gorgeous-looking horse and looks like he will make up into a two-year-old. We've had a bit of lucky with Coulsty over the past few years so we were happy enough to take a chance on this lad.” He added, “We found the yearling sales very expensive this year. We bought six or seven at the Orby but only managed to buy one at Tattersalls Ireland, which would be unusual for us. But we've bought 10 this week so we're not going too bad now.” Of the 243 horses offered on Tuesday, 195 were sold for a turnover of €1,961,500. The average was €10,059 while the median was €6,000. Coolmore America has assigned stud fees for its three newest additions following last weekend's Breeders' Cup Championships at Del Mar. 2025 GI Breeders' Cup Classic runner up and 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' Sierra Leone (Gun Runner–Heavenly Love, by Malibu Moon) tops the list at $75,000. “We are honored to announce three new Eclipse Award winners as part of our 2026 stallion roster here at Ashford Stud,” said Charlie O'Connor, Director of Sales at Coolmore America. “Sierra Leone, Fierceness and Citizen Bull all arrived safely at their new home to begin their stallion careers and are available to be seen by breeders with immediate effect.” The 2024 Breeders' Cup Classic winner and 3-year-old Eclipse Champion, Sierra Leone retires with career earnings north of $8,000,000 and wins at the top level including the GI Toyota Blue Grass Stakes and the GI Whitney Stakes along with the aforementioned Classic. “Sierra Leone is a Saratoga Sale-topping son of the great Gun Runner and Eclipse Award-winning champion 3-year-old colt who was never out of the money in all of his 14 career starts winning three Grade I's including the Bluegrass at Keeneland, last year's Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar and this year's Whitney at Saratoga,” O'Connor said. “A true warrior, he arguably saved his best race for last when closing from behind in his typical barn-storming fashion to run a close second to Forever Young. His final Beyer Speed Figure of 111 equaled that of Forever Young and he ran the best Ragozoin Speed Figure of his career of 2 3/4 which was equal to that of the winner.” Eclipse-winning juvenile and fellow 'Rising Star' Fierceness (City of Light–Nonna Bella, by Stay Thirsty) will stand for $50,000 after a third-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic Saturday. His Grade I wins include the GI Pacific Classic, GI Draftkings Travers Stakes, GI Curlin Florida Derby and the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile in 2023. “Fierceness is another Eclipse Award-winning juvenile and danced every dance winning Grade I races in each of his three years on the track,” said O'Connor. “He was seen to great effect in winning iconic races like the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, the Florida Derby, the Travers and the Pacific Classic, running seven 110+ Beyer Speed Figures in a glittering career. ” Another Champion 2-year-old joins the roster in Citizen Bull (Into Mischief–No Joke, by Distorted Humor) who will stand for $35,000 in his debut season off a runner-up effort in the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. He won a pair of Grade I's in California for Bob Baffert including the 2024 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile and the GI American Pharoah Stakes. “Citizen Bull rounded out his career with a hugely brave run in the Breeders' Cup Mile setting incredible fractions in a race for the ages,” said O'Connor. “He is son of the great Into Mischief, an Eclipse Award-winning Champion 2-year-old and from a family full of 2-year-old speed including Champions Favorite Trick and Tiz The Law.” The post Sierra Leone Tops New Coolmore America Sires at $75,000 appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. As the global racing industry returns to its respective corners following the Breeders' Cup World Championships, the same drum is beating once again: “Regulatory vets are terrible. They have too much power. My horse is sound–we imaged them, we've had no issues, and we wouldn't send them if they weren't 100%.” The truth is, all of those statements can be true at the same time–and often are. Whether you're a casual fan, a critic, or a lifelong racing supporter, you could easily walk away from this spectacular week thinking that top horsemen and horsewomen train lame horses and don't even know it. Statistically, nearly 10% of the top horses in the world were scratched due to soundness issues according to the regulatory veterinary process, with press releases coming out faster than Krispy Kreme's “Hot Now” donuts. That optic isn't good for anyone–not for the industry, and most importantly, not for the horse. I have the unique perspective of having worn all the hats in this debate–veterinary world experience, trainer, and participant–and one thing I know is that everyone needs to stop talking at each other and start talking to each other about solutions. So, here's my start. I don't envy the regulatory veterinarians. Their job is incredibly difficult, and as a trainer, I've experienced the heartbreak of scratching from the Breeders' Cup myself. I also navigate the daily nuances of racing rules and HISA regulations. Hear me out. One simple step toward improvement–and a place where HISA already provides the framework–is this: regulatory veterinary exam comments should be visible in the HISA portal to the connections of each horse. These notes shouldn't be secret. I support HISA–not blindly, but constructively. I support the effort to keep improving it, to make it better for our horses and our industry. I'm well aware of its shortcomings, believe me. But since HISA's inception, we've steadily built comprehensive veterinary records for our horses–records that regulatory vets access and review regularly. These records belong to the horses, and by extension, to their owners. If a regulatory veterinarian has a medical opinion about one of my horses, I want to know it. I value their professional judgment–even if I don't always agree. The idea that medical information flows only one way doesn't align with our shared goal of putting the horse first. Making regulatory notes accessible to trainers would turn the temperature down immediately. It removes guesswork and dispels the perception of bias–the notion that “a certain vet has it out for a certain trainer.” Transparency would help us focus on what really matters: the horse. Will regulatory vets be right 100% of the time? Of course not. None of us are. But hiding their notes from trainers doesn't help anyone, least of all the horses. In closing: we can't keep shouting “transparency” from the rooftops while winking on the side and playing pin the tail on the donkey. If we want a stronger, more accountable industry–for owners, bettors, fans, and above all, the horses–we can do better. And we must. The four-strong 2026 roster of Newsells Park Stud stallions is led by Nathaniel at £17,500. The Classic sire stood for £20,000 in 2025. On the back of his son Zavateri's exploits, Without Parole will stand for an increased fee of £10,000, up from £8,000 this year. Zavateri won the G2 July Stakes, G2 Vintage Stakes and the G1 National Stakes this term. Rounding out the roster are A'Ali at £5,000 and Isaac Shelby at £7,000, who both stand at unchanged fees. All fees are October 1st, special live foal terms. Newsells Park Stud's general manager, Julian Dollar said, “Zavateri provided us with one of the great 'David & Goliath' stories of the year, as he proved his talent, speed, and incredible gutsiness time and time again. His wins as well as those of group and stakes performers like Fiery Lucy, Genchev, Sea To Sky, etc., from only 84 foals of racing age, demonstrate what this top-class miler son of Frankel offers breeders. “Nathaniel has established himself as one of Europe's premier middle distance sires with nine Group 1 winners and four Classic winners. He and Frankel are the only active sires to have produced the winners of the English, Irish and French Oaks, as well as the Epsom Derby. You have to be a pretty special stallion to sire horses of the calibre of Enable and Desert Crown and it is gratifying to see yearling buyers recognising that fact. His yearling sales average continues to rise, year on year. He is an appealing stallion for every breeder, confirmed at the highest Classic level, a leading young broodmare sire, and with a yearling sales average of more than £100,000, and yet he stands at only £17,500. “A'Ali is a cracking looking horse whose progeny have shown they are exactly what they say on the tin: fast and precocious. A leading first-crop sire based in Britain, (by winners and winners to runners), his progeny made an immediate impact this spring, highlighted by multiple winner and Group performer, Ali Shuffle, but have proven they can train on with a multitude of recent winners.” “As the only son of Night Of Thunder currently standing in Britain, Isaac Shelby is an incredibly exciting stallion prospect, and it was no surprise to see him well supported in his first season at stud. His looks and race record are remarkably similar to his sire. His Group 2 win as a two-year-old, his Guineas form at three and his conformation and temperament make a compelling case for breeders to use this son of Night Of Thunder, for a fraction of his sire's fee.” The post Nathaniel Anchors 2026 Newsells Park Stud Roster At £17.5K, Without Parole Upped To £10K appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Taller ladies need not apply for a date with Havana Grey in 2026 as Whitsbury Manor Stud has confirmed that the star stallion will continue to cover mares with a height restriction in place for next year. His fee remains private while Showcasing has been dropped by £5,000 to £30,000 and newbie Elite Status introduced at £8,000. Dragon Symbol and Sergei Prokofiev will operate at that same fee. Joe Callan, Head of Bloodstock and Sales at Whitsbury, commented, “Havana Grey will once again have his fee listed as private. This reflects the importance of carefully managing his book to mares 16.0hh or under — a strategy that proved highly effective last season, resulting in an impressive 90% fertility rate — benefitting both the stallion and our clients. “He has enjoyed another outstanding season on the track, siring 15 individual black-type two-year-olds — more than any other stallion standing worldwide — equating to an astounding near 25% black-type two-year-olds to runners. A truly remarkable achievement, especially considering they were conceived from his final £6,000 crop.” Callan added, “Showcasing will stand at £30,000. He now boasts 149 lifetime Stakes performers and added a second Group 1 Sussex Stakes winner to his record this year. His influence continues to grow as a broodmare sire, highlighted by Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Lake Victoria and Group 1 Nunthorpe runner-up Aint Nobody. Showcasing's yearlings in 2025 have sold for up to 240,000gns. “Elite Status joins the roster for 2026 and will stand his first season at £8,000. A Group winner at both two and three, who was rated superior to both his sire and grandsire. Purchased by Karl & Kelly Burke for 325,000 gns as a yearling, he remains Havana Grey's highest-rated performer with an impressive RPR of 119. “Dragon Symbol will remain at £8,000 after covering full books of over 140 mares in both 2024 and 2025. His first foals head to the sales in the coming weeks and are keenly anticipated. Sergei Prokofiev, who looks set to be crowned Leading Second-Season Sire, will also stand at £8,000 following another excellent year headed by Group 1 winner Arizona Blaze and Harry's Half Million hero Song Of The Clyde.” The post Whitsbury To Keep Height Restriction For Havana Grey In 2026 – Fee Still Private appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. The 2025 Pat Smullen Race Day and the Curragh to Curragh Charity Cycle has officially raised €351,631 for Cancer Trials Ireland, bringing the total funds generated since the initiative began in 2022 to over €1.2 million. This exceptional support has been instrumental in advancing life-saving cancer research and treatment development through Cancer Trials Ireland. The Pat Smullen Race Day at the Curragh Racecourse, now a much-anticipated highlight of the flat racing calendar, unites two major fundraising efforts in aid of Cancer Trials Ireland. The Pat Smullen Cancer Trials Ireland Charity Race, generously supported this year by Ballylinch Stud, featured 22 dedicated riders taking to the track in tribute to the legendary champion jockey and in memory of loved ones affected by cancer. Adding further energy and community spirit to the occasion, the Curragh to Curragh Charity Cycle, conceived by Gavin Lynch in memory of his late mother Olive, who passed away from pancreatic cancer, once again drew a phenomenal response. Over 150 cyclists took part in the 100km route on Saturday, 30th August, supported by Paddy Power, visiting three racecourses and two stud farms before returning to the Curragh Racecourse for race day celebrations. Funds raised have directly supported the establishment of the Pat Smullen Chair in Pancreatic Cancer at University College Dublin, held by Professor Gráinne O'Kane. This pioneering role aims to make Ireland a global leader in pancreatic cancer research and treatment. Speaking at the presentation, Angela Clayton Lea, Chief Executive Officer of Cancer Trials Ireland, said, “It is a very exciting time for global researchers who are studying this disease, because we are developing new drugs that can really target the most common mutations in pancreatic cancer. In the next year, Prof Grainne O'Kane – who is the Pat Smullen Chair in Pancreatic Cancer in UCD – is set to open at least two clinical trials targeting specific mutations in the tumour to help provide a precision oncology approach.” In 2026, the Pat Smullen Race Day will take place on Saturday 29th August. Jamie Melham has become the second female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup, guiding Half Yours across the line first at Flemington Racecourse. The Australian is also the first woman to claim the Melbourne Cup-Caulfield Cup double. Her win comes 10 years after Michelle Payne created history riding Prince of Penzance. Following the victory, Melham told Australia's Nine Network: “This is why we get up out of bed every morning at 4am… it's tough. It's not all glorious and perfect, as everyone can see sometimes. “I've had an amazing year. Got married, had some really great days on the track, but nothing ever, ever compares to this feeling right now I'm feeling.” Half Yours – the only Australian-bred horse in the 24-strong field – was among the favourites to take advantage of the soft track after sporadic rain. The horse was in a tussle for first place with Irish horse Goodie Two Shoes coming into the final stretch of the 3,200m race, but Melham kicked at the perfect time to cross the finish line with a multiple-length advantage. The Joseph O'Brien-trained Goodie Two Shoes held on for second, with Middle Earth coming third and River of Stars finishing fourth. Melham beat her husband Ben on board Smokin' Romans to the finish line, with the two sharing a moment after the race. She used her post-race interview to pay tribute to her grandfather, who died last week. “I have to mention my grandpa,” Melham told Nine. “He died last week. The last thing he watched was the Caulfield Cup, and he was such a big supporter of mine. So he's up there opening those gaps for me because I needed a few gaps open then.” Al Riffa – also trained by Ireland's O'Brien – received a mountain of late support, but was unable to break away as it crossed the line in seventh place. O'Brien was searching for a third Melbourne Cup victory. The two big winners at Kaikoura yesterday have been the two biggest movers in the latest and final rankings for the IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup and the Renwick Farms Dominion Trot. Both features will highlight a stellar Cup day at Addington Raceway next Tuesday. Father Time was an upset winner of the South Bay Trotters Cup yesterday and as a result has gone from 21st to 12th in the rankings for the Dominion. That guarantees him a start in the $400,000 Group 1. Merlin was always going to be in the field for the New Zealand Cup and after his return to winning form in the Alabar Kaikoura Cup he is now ranked sixth, up four places on a week ago. There has been a re-jig of the rankings at the top following the withdrawal of two-time defending champion Swayzee earlier this week. Hometown hero Republican Party is now the top seed though Australian superstar Leap To Fame is a pronounced $2 favourite. The barrier draw for both the Cup and the Dominion will be broadcast as part of a Box Seat special on Trackside tomorrow (Wednesday) from 8.30pm.
