What Geelong Races Where Geelong Racecourse – 99 Breakwater Rd, Breakwater VIC 3219 When Friday, August 22, 2025 First Race 1:30pm AEST Visit Dabble The Geelong racecourse is the destination for a competitive eight-race meeting on Friday afternoon. With clear skies and a track already rated a Good 4 at the time of acceptances, there will be no excuses for fancied runners throughout the program, especially with rail out 3m from the 1800m-400m and true the remainder. The first race at Geelong is set to go at 1:30pm AEST. Best Bet at Geelong: Tournelle Tournelle has been knocking on the door all prep and finds a very winnable 0–64. She maps to land midfield with cover from barrier six, and Jamie Mott sticking is a tick for a mare who’s been game in defeat at 1600m. Back to the 1512m looks perfect now, and she gets a nice setup with a couple of genuine on-pacers to cart her into the race before the bend. If Tournelle brings anything close to her best, this is her day to put one away. Best Bet Race 5 – #5 Tournelle (6) 4yo Mare | T: Anthony & Sam Freedman | J: Jamie Mott (58.5kg) Next Best at Geelong: Imamanzor Imamanzor brings solid city form back to country grade and should relish 1715m around Geelong. He was a brave third at Murray Bridge last start and boxed on well in a $150k Flemington 1700m the start prior, so this BM64 is a downshift. From barrier four he can park in the first four, control his rhythm, and use his turn of foot early in the home straight. Declan Bates knows him well, and on a Good 4 his two wins at 1300–1400m plus recent 1600–1700m efforts read well. With even luck, Imamanzor looks hard to hold out. Next Best Race 6 – #1 Imamanzor (4) 4yo Gelding | T: Symon Wilde | J: Declan Bates (60.5kg) Best Value at Geelong: Alpinova Alpinova is absolutely humming and can spear for a hat trick despite the wide alley. She’s fresh off back-to-back wins at Mildura (1209m) and Warracknabeal (1205m), both with strong last 600m splits and the latest with authority through the line. Up to BM58 suits; the draw (14) likely forces Koby Jennings to ride patiently and blend into it three-wide with cover — ideal at Geelong’s long run home at the 1200m. With her current confidence and proven record at the trip, she profiles as a juicy each-way play with horse racing bookmakers. Best Value Race 8 – #14 Alpinova (14) 6yo Mare | T: Brooke Verwey-Mitchell | J: Koby Jennings (58.5kg) Friday quaddie tips for Geelong Geelong quadrella selections Friday, August 22, 2025 5-10-11 1-2 1-2-3-11 4-6-10-14 Horse racing tips View the full article

What Moonee Valley Races Where Moonee Valley Racecourse – Gate 2 Feehan Ave, Moonee Ponds VIC 3039 When Saturday, August 23, 2025 First Race 12:20pm AEST Visit Dabble Moonee Valley Racecourse is the destination for feature racing in Victoria on Saturday afternoon, with the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) headlining proceedings. Clear skies are forecast leading into the meeting and on race day itself, meaning the initial Soft 5 track rating should firm to a Good 4 prior to the opening event. The rail comes out 5m, with the first race at The Valley jumping at 12:20pm AEST. Carlyon Stakes Tip: Oak Hill Oak Hill could not have been more impressive when winning on return at the Moonee Valley 1000m on August 9. The five-year-old gelding disposed of a similar field to what he faces in Saturday’s $175,000 feature, and considering they will be flying along out in front, the race sets up perfectly for him to swamp his rivals once more. He has three wins and a second at the track and trip, and as long as the surface allows backmarkers to run on, Oak Hill should prove too hard to hold out once more. Carlyon Stakes Race 7 – #5 Oak Hill (4) 5yo Gelding | T: Ben, Will & JD Hayes | J: Mark Zahra (57kg) Best Bet at Moonee Valley: Exit Not much went right for Exit at Flemington on August 2, when she finished third in a five-horse field. The three-year-old filly was comfortably beaten by Crossbow, but with a significant weight swing on that runner, she looks hard to beat on Saturday. The Ciaron Maher-trained will need a bit more pressure in the race, which will allow her to build through her gears and blouse her rivals — much like she did at Sandown the start prior. Best Bet Race 3 – #6 Exit (4) 3yo Filly | T: Ciaron Maher | J: Mark Zahra (56.5kg) Next Best at Moonee Valley: Aleppo Pine Aleppo Pine will have his first start as a three-year-old, and if he produces anything close to what he did as a juvenile, he will take a power of beating. The Blue Point colt wasn’t beaten far in stakes company before heading to the paddock, including finishing on the heels of subsequent Group 1 winner Nepotism in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m). From barrier 10, Mark Zahra will need a bit of luck to find a spot just behind the leaders early — but if he gets it, Aleppo Pine should prove too classy. Next Best Race 5 – #1 Aleppo Pine (10) 3yo Colt | T: Ben, Will & JD Hayes | J: Mark Zahra (57kg) Best Value at Moonee Valley: Farhh Flung Farhh Flung was strong through the line in defeat at the Moonee Valley 1200m last time out when coming from a rearward position. He went straight to the rear of the field from a wide draw but sustained a long run to the line when defeated by the in-form Shoeless. He meets that runner 2kg better at the weights this time around, and if Farhh Flung can find the right back to follow in the final 400m, he will be hard to hold out. Best Value Race 6 – #12 Farhh Flung (7) 7yo Gelding | T: Danny O’Brien | J: Zac Spain (54kg) Saturday quaddie tips for Moonee Valley Moonee Valley quadrella selections Saturday, August 23, 2025 3-5-9-10-12 2-3-5 2-3-5-7-8-9-12 6-10-12 Horse racing tips View the full article

By Jonny Turner Theoretically Always Dreaming should be winning his Southern Surge Final at Gore on Sunday. But with lucrative stakes up and an outstanding series about to culminate, theories can go out the window. Always Dreaming is part of a powerful squad that trainer-driver Nathan Williamson lines up on a big day for southern harness racing. The three-year-old beat the same field he faces from the same tough draw in his excellent Southern Surge heat win at Ascot Park a fortnight ago. As the pacer was fresh up and his rivals had all had recent racing, Always Dreaming should strip fitter and prove even harder to beat in Race 10, the Macca Lodge Southern Surge Series Final Mobile Pace (5.18pm). While that appears to be the case, Williamson isn’t losing any respect for his opposition. “His win was good and he seems to have trained on quite well since then,” Williamson said. “It should be a pretty tactical race, it may not pan out quite like last time.” “The money is up and everyone will be out there doing their best.” “I am probably going to have to work him into it at some stage, however it works out I am pretty hopeful he will be a great chance.” She’s Crunchy ($1.95) will attempt to keep her unbeaten record intact in her Southern Surge Final tilt (3.44pm). The mare has been outstanding in both of her wins so far and she looks well poised from barrier 3. “She’s come up with a nice draw and I think she has the speed to use it.” “She’s a nice filly and if she can front up like she has in her first two starts, she should be a great chance.” Clotilde Wainwright was an impressive heat winner downing key rival Tarragindi at Winton. The mare’s task on Sunday is to do it again. “She’s a lovely wee mare and her win at Winton was great.” “Obviously Tarragindi is the horse to beat but if she gets away and does everything right she is more than capable of filling a hole.” Williamson also starts Black Pat in another trotting final on Sunday. The four-year-old made a mistake in her last start at Ascot Park, which she can’t afford to do again. “It all depends on whether she can bring her manners.” “If she was able to get it right, we would push forward, there doesn’t look to be any natural leaders there.” “Over 2200m at Gore, that’s the place to be with the good ones off handicaps.” Williamson also starts Rise Up N Dance in another of Sunday’s finals and Indulge Me in a two-year-old event. By Michael Guerin Tonight’s $40,000 Allied Security Maurice Holmes Vase at Addington (8.14pm) isn’t Franco Marek’s Grand Final but it holds his ticket to his Grand Final. The hard-running pacer looks the most likely beneficiary of his last-start conqueror Alta Meteor missing tonight’s Group 3 race after he beat many of these home when finishing second last start. While owner-trainer Greg Manson was pleased with that performance tonight’s race has always been his early season aim with Franco Marek because it includes a golden ticket for the winner into the IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup on Tuesday, November 11. Franco Marek raced in the Cup last season albeit it off an interrupted preparation but the great race may be even harder to get into this season with stars like Leap To Fame, Swayzee, Republican Party, Merlin, Don’t Stop Dreaming and Akuta certain to be in the field so there are really only nine, and probably less, spots up for grabs. For a horse like Franco Marek who is still only a Rating 85 pacer a victory tonight is clearly the cleanest path to November 11. “We want to be in the Cup again this season and this is how we want to get into it,” says Manson. “So we have set him for this, had him up and going nice and early and I was really happy with his fresh up run. “Alta Meteor was good beating us but our fella was looking at puddles when coming up the inside and the other horse just got too much momentum up. “But he is not there this week and we really get our chance.” Franco Marek and American Me finished in the placings behind Alta Meteor last start and they are suited again tonight as they tend to step and get handy, which could see them lead and trail again. That will make it hard for all their rivals but particularly Mo’unga, who was running on well in the same race last start but faces a 10m handicap tonight in a race which may not have the moves to drag him into the race. That is not to say they are the only chances in the race as the Dunn team looks set to come right this spring while Bazooka is an interesting addition to open class, albeit being on the unruly so likely to also settle back in the small field. Later in the night the open class trotters return in the Basil Dean Trot over 1980m mobile with most eyes of Muscle Mountain. The grand old horse has to start from the outside of the front line and was only given a quiet trial last week so one of the key questions will be whether driver Ben Hope decides to light him up and use his gate speed early. The clear danger should be Love N The Port, who has been in great form in weaker races but has gate speed and could secure tactical advantage. View the full article

By Michael Guerin Scott Phelan knows Better Knuckle Up and Jeremiah are up to open class. What their co-trainer doesn’t know if whether that is good enough to win their comeback race at Alexandra Park tonight. The two four-year-olds resume for Phelan and senior training partner Barry Purdon in a serious 1700m scamper at Alexandra Park tonight, up against Akuta, who was super costly for punters when being beaten in a similar race two weeks ago. Akuta should be fitter for his third that night and could be ready to be driven aggressively with co-trainer Mark Purdon taking the reins tonight so opened $1.40 with the TAB. But his defeat showed Akuta is still very much on the way back up after 20 months away from the track and Phelan would love to exploit that tonight. “We all know how good Akuta is so he is the one to beat,” says Phelan. “But we are really happy with both of ours. They are working well and are ready to go and while most horses improve with their first run back in this grade we think they are pretty ready.” While Akuta has won a NZ Derby, Taylor Mile and Auckland Cup, Better Knuckle Up has actually won a race worth almost as much as those three Group 1s added together as he took out the first running of the $500,000 Velocity Slot Race at Addington last November. That was the culmination of a gradual rise through the three-year-old grades last season and he is undoubtedly an open class pacer in the making, although most horses need a least a few races in the big time to acclimatise. “Both our horses will be Cup horses this time next year,” says Phelan. “But that doesn’t mean they can’t win this week if Akuta is vulnerable again. “While Better Knuckle Up has the big race victory on the board I actually think there is very little between them and if I had to select one over the other this week it could be Jeremiah. “He was on a bit of a learning curve last year but he seems very sharp to me now.” Add in Akuta and the talented The Surfer and the field has more moving parts than the market may suggest even after the scratching of Treacherous Baby. Phelan says their best open class pacer Merlin as well as Sooner The Bettor, Duchess Megxit and Cold Chisel will all be trialing in less than a fortnight as the first two target the Spring Cup on September 19. “Ideally they will stay up here for most of their NZ Cup campaigns, we’d love to give them three starts up here before heading south.” The Purdon/Phelan barn have a strong hand in tonight as they start to roll out around 25 horses who will be ready to race over the next month. “I think Confederate will be a good chance this week, his run last week should have really brought him on.” The stable has the beautifully-bred No More Dreaming (R2, No. 5) making his debut in the TAB Racing Club colours in a stacked juvenile race and Phelan says while he can run he will learn a lot from tonight’s experience. Two Jules (R4, No.5) has been a sharp improver since coming north to join the stable and Phelan says she can win again while tonight’s meeting also sees a rarity in three mobile trot races at Alexandra Park at this stage of the season. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y. – A year ago, Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna) buzzed through her season, winning six of seven starts–five of them Grade Is–on her way to Horse of the Year honors. Kenny McPeek, Thorpedo Anna's trainer, says his stable star is just as good, if not better, than she was a year ago. The 4-year-old filly, still as popular as ever, will get the chance to prove it on Saturday when she runs in the GI, $500,000 Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. “Every bit,” McPeek said early Thursday morning while Thorpedo Anna toured the Saratoga paddock. “She is as big and strong as she has ever been.” Exercise rider Bobby Eversole, who was aboard Thorpedo Anna on Thursday, found that out. After her schooling session, the filly went out for a gallop and became difficult for Eversole to handle. Coming down the stretch on the main track, a headstrong Thorpedo Anna wanted to do more than the routine gallop and ran off with her partner for about an eighth of a mile. “She has all that energy,” McPeek said back at his barn. “He was worried to death she was going to run off on him. He just held her together the whole way. When he let her stretch out a bit, then she settled. She is locked and loaded.” Thorpedo Anna, the 6-5 morning-line favorite in the Personal Ensign won the GII Azeri Stakes and Grade I Apple Blossom – both at Oaklawn Park – before finishing off the board for the first time in her life in GI La Troienne at Churchill Downs on Friday, May 2. She finished seventh after getting bumped going into the first turn and became a non-factor after that. Thorpedo Anna lost interest after that incident. “They crushed her in the first turn,” McPeek said. She and regular jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. rebounded and won the GII Fleur de Lis by three lengths in late June at Churchill. By design, the next race was the Personal Ensign after time off. “She is really good right now,” McPeek said. “I fully expect her to do what she does. I like the draw (seven post). I'm happy she is not tucked down inside and has to wiggle out. This is an exciting race. Every time I run her, all eyes are on her.” Thorpedo Anna is owned by Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings, Inc., Magdalena Racing, Mark Edwards and Judy Hicks. Book 'em Danno, Mullikin Renew Rivalry in Forego Ok, so it's not Red Sox-Yankees, but Book 'em Danno (Bucchero) and Mullikin (Violence) have carved out a nice little equine rivalry this year. And it will continue Saturday when they meet for the third straight race in the GI, $500,000 Forego Stakes at Saratoga. Book 'em Danno, owned by Atlantic Six Racing LLC, has won the first two, the GIII True North Stakes and the GII Alfred G. Vanderbilt Stakes, both at Saratoga. He won the 6 ½-furlong True North by 1 ¼ lengths and the 6-furlong Vanderbilt by 2 ¼ lengths. “Not really,” Book 'em Danno's trainer Derek Ryan said Thursday morning when asked if he thought this was a rivalry. “We have beat him twice. If he was going to beat me, I thought it would have been in the six (Vanderbilt).” Book 'em Danno is the 8-5 morning line Forego favorite in the field of 11. He will be ridden by Paco Lopez. Rodolphe Briset, who trains Mullikin, smiled when he was asked about the two horses. “It is fun,” he said outside his barn at the Oklahoma Training Track Thursday. “Maybe he is just a better horse. I am not a guy who is going to find an excuse. It's horse racing. You are going to lose more than you win.” The Forego will be run at seven furlongs. Looking for an edge there? Good luck. Both horses have run it six times; both horses have three wins. Ryan, who shipped Book 'em Danno to Saratoga from Monmouth Park on Monday, was nonchalant when discussing his 4-year-old. All he does is win. Fifteen times he has been to the races; nine times he has come a winner. In four starts at Saratoga, he has three wins. But you wouldn't know he is a star racehorse by looking at him. Just ask Ryan. “He does not have a ton of pedigree,” he said. “Look at him; he walks around there like an old donkey. If you would line up 10 horses, he would be the last one anyone would pick. He is not a pretty mover. He swings his left and he swings his right. That is his way.” By now means is he degrading his horse. Ryan knows he can run. If he can claim the Forego, he will also lay claim as the best sprinter in the country. Brisset and Mullikin, the 7-2 second choice, owned by WinStar Farm LLC, have other ideas. Mullikin has five wins and six seconds in 14 starts and will be ridden by Flavien Prat. “He is the defending champion, he won a Grade I here, he loves the track,” Brisset said. “He just ran his lifetime best Beyer (106 in the Vanderbilt). I know he finished second, but he ran a winning race. We will bring him over there and try to beat him.” Sovereignty Not the Only Horse Mott is Running Saturday The attention is all on Sovereignty (Into Mischief) on Travers Day. The 2-5 morning-line favorite in the Midsummer Derby is not the only horse Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott will be saddling on Saturday. He has Scotland (Good Magic) in the GI, $500,000 Forego and Scylla (Tapit), the 5-2 morning-line favorite in the GI, $500,000 Ballerina. Scylla, owned by Juddmonte, is a hard knocking 5-year-old mare that has been consistent as they come for Mott. She has earned over $1 million in her 13-race career and has five wins, four seconds and a third. In her most recent effort, she was third, beaten two lengths by Halina's Forte (Mitole) in the GII Honorable Miss. “Out of her last three starts, we hit mud twice, which I don't think was in her favor,” Mott said outside his barn on the Oklahoma Training Track Thursday. “The other time it wasn't muddy, we hit Ways and Means (Practical Joke). She is a good, solid filly. Our challenge is to win a Grade I with her, that's what we would like to do.” Scylla, who will be ridden by Flavien Prat, has been in four Grade Is; she was second in two of them, including last year's Ballerina. Included in the eight she will face on Saturday is Hope Road (Quality Road), the 3-1 second choice. Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, Hope Road has won four of 11 career starts and is also looking for her first Grade I score. “She is doing well,” Baffert said by phone Thursday from his summer base at Del Mar. “If she runs like she did on Kentucky Derby Day (second in the GIII Derby City Distaff Stakes), she has a good chance.” Owned by Cicero Farms LLC, Hope Road will be ridden by Jose Ortiz for the first time. Friday, York, post time: 15:35, THE COOLMORE WOOTTON BASSETT NUNTHORPE STAKES-G1, £697,500, 2yo/up, 5fT Field: Jm Jungle (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}), Kerdos (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}), Manaccan (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), Night Raider (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Rumstar (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}), Spartan Arrow (Ire) (Sioux Nation), Washington Heights (GB) (Washington DC {Ire}), Ain't Nobody (Ire) (Sands Of Mali {Fr}), Arizona Blaze (GB) (Sergei Prokofiev), Asfoora (Aus) (Flying Artie {Aus}), Frost At Dawn (Frosted), Mgheera (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}), She's Quality (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), Celandine (GB) (Kingman {GB}), Sayidah Dariyan (Ire) (Dariyan {Fr}), Lady Iman (Ire) (Starman {GB}), Spicy Marg (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}). TDN Verdict: The two-year-old fillies Lady Iman and Spicy Marg bring another–and welcome–dimension to this renewal, as Europe's sprint division has been feeling a bit tired for a while and in need of some excitement. Most of the recent Group 1s in this category have been won by ex-handicappers and there is very little separating the top ones in that sphere and the Pattern-race brigade, so it is up to the likes of the juveniles and the unexposed three-year-old Sayidah Dariyan to stage a breakthrough. The latter took the track's six-furlong G3 Summer Stakes last month and should have no problems with the drop back to five as he tackles the hardened band of speedsters led by Arizona Blaze and Asfoora. [Tom Frary]. Friday, York, post time: 14:25, THE WEATHERBYS LONSDALE CUP-G2, £250,000, 3yo/up, 16f 56yT Field: Trawlerman (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}), Al Nayyir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), Al Qareem (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}), Dubai Future (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), Sweet William (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), Shackleton (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). TDN Verdict: Trawlerman has gone from strength to strength since winning this meeting's feature Ebor Handicap three years ago and now that Kyprios is out of the way seems to have taken another step forward. There is little evidence that the impressive Gold Cup hero has any weakness here, with stablemate Sweet William very much his underling and the course specialist Al Qareem needing to improve over a trip that is probably too far. [Tom Frary]. Friday, York, post time: 15:00, THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI GIMCRACK STAKES-G2, £250,000, 2yo, c/g, 6fT Field: Comical Point (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}), Do Or Do Not (Ire) (Space Blues {Ire}), Egoli (GB) (No Nay Never), Irish Fighter (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}), Lifeplan (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}), Reciprocated (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}), Rock On Thunder (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Yorkshire Puds (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}). TDN Verdict: Fitted with cheekpieces, Do Or Do Not has a real opportunity to get a Group-race win after three admirable placings in a renewal that has cut up. Reciprocated looked a bright prospect before flopping in the Listed Pat Eddery Stakes over seven, while the Thirsk novice winner Lifeplan has a lot to find race one to two even allowing for his obvious promise. [Tom Frary]. Saturday, York, post time: 15:00, THE SKY BET CITY OF YORK STAKES-G1, £665,000, 3yo/up, 7fT Field: Annaf (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}), Audience (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}), Lake Forest (GB) (No Nay Never), Never So Brave (Ire) (No Nay Never), Qirat (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), Quinault (Ger) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Rosallion (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}), Ten Bob Tony (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Maranoa Charlie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Seagulls Eleven (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}), Exactly (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). TDN Verdict: If Rosallion gives his best, few here will be able to live with his lethal acceleration and it could be that this is the trip he has been waiting for all along despite his Group 1-winning exploits over a mile. On bear ratings, there isn't much between him and the Summer Mile winner Never So Brave, but in terms of the speed he can produce it is a relative gulf. Maranoa Charlie will give it his all as usual and will probably keep going, but he may lack something at the top level and could just be a sitting duck while the 2023 Gimcrack winner Lake Forest needs to get back to the form of his Golden Eagle success. [Tom Frary]. Saturday, Curragh, post time: 15:27, COOLMORE STUD WOOTTON BASSETT TOM COOPER IRISH EUROPEAN BREEDERS FUND FUTURITY STAKES-G2, €72,000, 2yo, 7fT Field: A Boy Named Susie (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), Chicago Pope (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), Constitution River (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Geryon (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), Go Just Do It (GB) (Kingman {GB}). TDN Verdict: In the absence of proven Pattern-race performers, three maiden winners with infinite promise clash in Constitution River, A Boy Named Susie and Geryon. The former represents Aidan O'Brien successful on 17 occasions and in 10 of the last dozen and he followed a smart debut effort at Newmarket with a smooth win at Galway, while A Boy Named Susie and Geryon impressed on their winning debuts at Killarney and The Curragh respectively. [Tom Frary]. Saturday, Curragh, post time: 16:02, ALPHA CENTAURI DEBUTANTE STAKES-G2, €72,000, 2yo, f, 7fT Field: Balantina (Ire) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}), Brownstown (GB) (Cracksman {GB}), Composing (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Evolutionist (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Skydance (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Suzie Songs (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}). TDN Verdict: Significantly deeper than the Futurity, this stepping stone to the Moyglare features the standard-setting Silver Flash winner Composing, who bids to provide Aidan O'Brien with a 15th renewal and will be a warm order to do so. Skydance and Brownstown were well beaten at Leopardstown, but try again while the Anglesey Stakes winner Suzie Songs goes up in trip which shouldn't be any issue on pedigree. [Tom Frary]. Saturday, Deauville, France, post time: 15:50, JRA PRIX ALEC HEAD (PRIX DE POMONE)-G2, €119,000, 3yo/up, f/m, 12 1/2fT Field: Latakia (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Le Combat Continue (Fr) (De Treville {GB}), Happy Saxon (Fr) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), Bibbiena (Fr) (Doctor Dino {Fr}), Saxon Girl (Fr) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), Dare To Dream (Fr) (Camelot {GB}). TDN Verdict: Juddmonte's Latakia was adrift of Saxon Girl and Happy Saxon in June's Listed Prix Pawneese, but is on an upward curve and has recent form in the book, having annexed this month's Listed Prix Luth Enchantee at Clairefontaine. Wathnan Racing's Dare To Dream, winner of last term's G3 Prix Vanteaux, returns off a sixth in last month's G1 Grosser Dallmayr Preis and holds solid claims. Bibbiena has won four of six starts this year, but has not been seen since making a black-type breakthrough in May's Listed Prix Gold River. [Sean Cronin]. Saturday, York, post time: 13:50, THE SKY BET STRENSALL STAKES-G3, £170,000, 3yo/up, 8f 177yT Field: Boiling Point (Ire) (Too Darn Hot {GB}), Bullet Point (GB) (Advertise {GB}), Checkandchallenge (GB) (Fast Company {Ire}), King's Gambit (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), Skukuza (GB) (Blue Point {Ire}), Bowmark (GB) (Kingman {GB}), Gladius (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), King Of Cities (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). TDN Verdict: TDN Rising Star Bowmark probably found the Prix du Jockey Club too much to deal with at this early point of his career and has been given time to freshen up subsequently. The Goodwood handicap winner Gladius is ready for the step up and is another three-year-old with abundant potential, while last year's York Stakes runner-up and Great Voltigeur third King's Gambit is the pick of the older horses who obviously loves it here. [Tom Frary]. Saturday, Windsor, post time: 18:45, THE WEATHERBYS GLOBAL STALLIONS APP WINTER HILL STAKES-G3, £70,000, 3yo/up, 10fT Field: Military Order (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), Silawi (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), Devil's Advocate (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}), Great David (GB) (Ribchester {Ire}), Royal Playwright (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}). TDN Verdict: This looks an ideal opportunity for the consistent Military Order to get another Group win with the big cats away at York and elsewhere. His biggest concern may be the fellow Godolphin runner Devil's Advocate, who needs to get it together but who ran well enough to be fourth in the Dante over this trip to suggest there is talent there. [Tom Frary]. Saturday, York, post time: 16:45, THE JULIA GRAVES ROSES STAKES-Listed, £100,000, 2yo, 5fT Field: Dicksensian (GB) (Pinatubo {Ire}), Exclamation (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), Kinnalargy (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}), Military Code (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Rydale Frosty (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}), Silent Applause (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), Our Cody (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}), Revival Power (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {Ire}), Zelaina (GB) (Mehmas {Ire}). TDN Verdict: The Windsor Castle runner-up and Molecomb third Dickensian sets the form standard, but there are several in here with potential including Revival Power, the full-sister to Winter Power who ran so well behind Spicy Marg in Goodwood's Alice Keppel. [Tom Frary]. Saturday, Deauville, France, post time: 13:58, CRITERIUM DU FONDS EUROPEEN DE L'ELEVAGE-Listed, €130,000, 2yo, 8fT Field: Campacite (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), Dorado (Fr) (Romanised {Ire}), Waybreaker (Fr) (Galiway {GB}), Focus (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), Bandiagara (GB) (Zelzal {Fr}). TDN Verdict: Jean-Claude Rouget trainee Campacite took his record to two-from-three when stretching out to a mile at Saint-Cloud last month and sets the standard here. His main dangers are Listed Prix La Fleche fourth Focus, who goes beyond five furlongs for the first time here, and the unbeaten winner-of-one Waybreaker, who made a pleasing debut over 7 1/2 furlongs at this venue earlier in the month. The California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) on Thursday took initial steps to roll back parts of an in-race riding interference rule after both jockeys and stewards decided that several tweaks made to the regulation over the past decade aren't working in ways that stakeholders had anticipated. The CHRB voted 6-0 on Aug. 21 to send amendments to Rule 1699 out for a public commentary period, after which commissioners will vote again to finalize any new changes before they go into effect. A CHRB staff analysis of the changes that was published in the informational packet for Thursday's meeting described the situation like this: “Rule 1699 currently provides that a jockey who rides contrary to the rule will face a minimum suspension of two riding days and [stewards] shall issue a suspension greater than the minimum for more than one infraction of this rule within a contiguous 60-day calendar period or any infraction which the steward determines jeopardized the safety of another horse or jockey. “However, the rule has been deemed impractical by stakeholders and CHRB due to the lack of clarity,” the analysis stated. “Therefore, CHRB staff recommends that regulations be amended to eliminate the minimum penalty for suspension and allow the stewards to either disqualify, suspend, or otherwise discipline a jockey who rides in a manner contrary to this rule and allowing the stewards to use their discretion,” the analysis stated. “CHRB staff also recommends that regulations be amended to address a leading horse not crossing over to impel the passing horse to shorten its stride,” the analysis stated. Prior to a brief discussion of the proposed changes, CHRB chairman Gregory Ferraro, DVM, explained that the impetus for the rule changes “actually started last summer, when I asked the stewards if they had one thing they would like to change, one rule they would like to change. This is it. “So basically, we're giving the stewards judgment as to penalty, severity, length, et cetera,” Ferraro said. CHRB Chief Steward Darrel McHargue added that all of the state's stewards are in agreement about the changes, and that The Jockeys' Guild also supports the amendment. Back in November 2016, the CHRB attempted to simplify the rule's language and better define “interference” while also requiring stewards to issue enhanced penalties against jockeys who committed multiple infractions within a 90-day period or who jeopardized the safety of another horse or jockey. In March 2018, the CHRB made a second rule tweak to enable stewards to discipline a jockey who rode in a manner contrary to the regulation in a careless or willful manner, or who strikes at another horse or jockey, by establishing a minimum penalty of two riding days. That amendment also called for the issuance of a suspension greater than the minimum for more than one infraction of the rule by the jockey within a 60-day calendar period, or any infraction which, in the opinion of the stewards, jeopardized the safety of another horse or jockey. But after nearly a decade of practical applications of Rule 1699 in officiating races, “The stakeholders and the Board have determined that these amendments do not function the way they anticipated and would prefer discretion when issuing a penalty,” the CHRB staff analysis stated. “The regulation is vague regarding subsequent penalties and leads to the question if stewards are required to increase the penalty from the last ruling or if they are only obligated to increase the penalty above the minimum as described in the rule,” the analysis stated. “The stakeholders feel that discretion is better on subsequent penalties rather than having to follow the rule because a garden-variety violation followed by a minor infraction may lead to too severe of a penalty for the second violation,” the analysis stated. “The stakeholders and the Board also determined that interference did not cover all situations as anticipated,” the analysis stated. McHargue told commissioners that by making the new amendments, “You're giving us more discretion to actually assess penalties.” One change to Rule 1699 that got voted in now will re-assert that, “A leading horse is entitled to any part of the course, but when another horse is attempting to pass in a clear opening, the leading horse shall not cross over so as to compel the passing horse to shorten its stride.” Another part of Rule 1699 that is currently written this way: “A horse which interferes with another…may be disqualified and placed behind the horse so interfered with if, in the opinion of the Stewards, the horse interfered with was not at fault and due to the interference lost the opportunity for a better placing.” Will be amended to instead state: “A horse which interferes with another…may be disqualified and placed behind the horse so interfered with or last if, in the opinion of the Stewards, the horse interfered with was not at fault and the interference occurs in a part of the race where the horse interfered with loses the opportunity to place where it might be reasonably expected to finish.” The post CHRB Advances Amendment That Would Roll Back Parts of In-Race Riding Interference Rule appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Blue Devil Racing Stable's Celtic Dawn (Honest Mischief), who was vanned off after winning Saratoga's sixth race Wednesday afternoon, underwent surgery to repair a fracture to her left front pastern at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Saratoga Thursday morning. “Celtic Dawn was treated at Rood & Riddle in Saratoga and the surgery to stabilize an incomplete fracture of her pastern this morning went well,” said Blue Devil's Marc Holliday. “She is expected to make a full recovery.” Trained by Carlos Martin, the New York bred homebred won the 5 1/2-furlong statebred test for 2-year-olds by three lengths. Taken off the turf because of rain, the track was officially listed as sloppy. 'TDN Rising Star' Fierceness (City of Light) is among late nominees for Del Mar's GI Pacific Classic Aug. 30. The 4-year-old is owned St. Elias Stables and Repole Stable, the latter also campaigns GI Stephen Foster winner Mindframe (Constitution). With the goal of keeping the two Repole runners separate until the GI Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar in November, Mindframe is slated to contest the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup at Saratoga Aug. 31. The Pacific Classic is also a 'Win & You're In' race for the Breeders' Cup Classic. Trainer Todd Pletcher worked Fierceness last Saturday at Saratoga. He went four furlongs in :47.66 (3/135). The champion juvenile colt of 2023, Fierceness won last year's GI Florida Derby in addition to the GII Jim Dandy and GI Travers Stakes. Second to Sierra Leone in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic, he returned this year to win the GII Alysheba at Churchill Downs. Most recently, he was runner-up in the GI Met Mile in June and fourth last out in the GI Whitney earlier this month. In other Pacific Classic news, 'TDN Rising Star' Nysos (Nyquist) worked Thursday at Del Mar, just five days since his last workout. He went five furlongs in :58.80 (3/31). “He went very well,” Baffert noted, adding that he may give Nysos one more breeze before the race. “He'll probably go something easy next week. So far so good.” Winner of the GIII Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar last season, the Baoma Corp. runner won this year's GIII Robert B. Lewis Stakes in addition to the GIII Triple Bend and GII San Diego Stakes July 26. He was a neck second to Mindframe in the GI Churchill Downs Stakes in May. In related news, this year's Pacific Classic card will be the richest day of racing ever (outside of the Breeders' Cup) at the seaside oval. The purses for the 11-race program add up to $2,374,000, over $100,000 more than the previous record set on Pacific Classic Day in 2023. “The 10% purse increase going into this summer,” racing secretary David Jerkens gives as one of the reasons for the increase. “We also increased our Maiden Dirt Bonus inflating some purses to $100,000 and we have a couple of maiden races that day.” The purses for the five stakes races on the Pacific Classic undercard remain the same as last year. The GII Del Mar Handicap and the GII Del Mar Mile are each worth $300,000. The GIII Green Flash and the GII Torrey Pines each have purses of $150,000. Resolute Bloodstock's Goliath (Adlerflug) will be making his German debut in the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden on September 7, according to trainer Francis-Henri Graffard. The 5-year-old gelding won the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes last year and only missed by a head when second in the G3 Prix Gontaut-Biron at Deauville on August 16. “I will run him over longer distances again and will have him start again over 2400 metres,” Graffard told Galopp Online during Thursday's racing at Deauville. “He will compete in the Grosser Preis von Baden in Baden-Baden at the beginning of September.” Goliath has been campaigned on an international level since last November, finishing sixth in the G1 Japan Cup, as well as ninth in the G1 QEII Cup in Hong Kong in April. Successful in the G3 La Coupe in June, he ran fifth later that month in the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud prior to the Gontaut-Biron.
