In this continuing series, TDN's Senior Racing Editor Steve Sherack catches up with the connections of promising maidens to keep on your radar. With a ton of steam behind impressive debut winner Just a Touch (Justify) heading into Saturday's GIII Gotham S., the second-place finisher's come-from-behind effort over a sloppy, sealed track that day at Fair Grounds may look even better after this weekend. Off at debut odds of 10-1 for Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, Gun Party (c, 3, Curlin–Carina Mia, by Malibu Moon) trailed the field of eight beneath Brian Hernandez, Jr. in the early stages of the six-furlong affair Jan. 27. Guided to the inside to race in fifth through an opening quarter in :22.25, the Three Chimneys Farm and Winchell Thoroughbreds colorbearer began to wind up with a rail run as Just a Touch gained command approaching the quarter pole. Gun Party gamely split horses and moved into second as Just a Touch pulled well clear in the stretch. Gun Party finished with interest while posing no threat to the winner to cross the line a geared-down second, beaten 4 1/4 lengths. It was another 5 1/4 lengths back to the third-place finisher. Gun Party earned an 80 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort. The Brad Cox-trained Just a Touch received an 89 rating. “That looks like a really legit horse,” Three Chimneys Vice Chairman Doug Cauthen said of Just a Touch, the 5-2 morning-line favorite in the Gotham. “We were very pleased and satisfied with (Gun Party's) effort because we knew that was a tough spot. Steve (Asmussen) had mentioned that he missed some time with him–he had gotten sick–and at this point, you're hoping that you can kick along and get into the big races. But at the end of the day, Steve's just letting the horse lead him. We think a lot of him. It's a great pedigree, a great cross and there's a lot of hope. But time will tell.” Carina Mia | Coady Produced by 2016 GI Acorn S. winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Carina Mia (Malibu Moon), Gun Party brought $1.7 million from these connections as a yearling on day one of the 2022 Keeneland September sale to dissolve a partnership. Gun Party, the third most expensive of 60 yearlings to switch hands by the mighty Curlin in 2022, was bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys Farm and Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings, Inc. Third carrying the Three Chimneys silks in her career finale in the 2017 GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, Carina Mia brought $2.6 million from Japan's Shadai Farm at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton November sale. Gun Party is bred on the same Curlin x Malibu Moon cross as champion Stellar Wind. He is also bred similarly to fellow Curlin-sired champions Malathaat and Nest as well as Curlin-sired GISWs Clairiere, Global Campaign, Idol and Paris Lights. “There were a bunch of partnership mares with Hill 'n' Dale, and when that group (of yearlings) went to the sale, he was a key one that was targeted,” Cauthen said. “Ron (Winchell) liked him as well so he came into the partnership. Hopefully, that team will have some more luck.” That team of Winchell Thoroughbreds, Three Chimneys Farm and Asmussen, of course, also campaigned 2017 Horse of the Year and GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}). The leading young sire currently commands a $250,000 stud fee at Goncalo Borges Torrealba's operation. “Goncalo is very partner-friendly and usually asks the partners to name horses,” Cauthen said. “Ron's team came up with Gun Party. Champion Fierceness (City of Light) continued his preparations for a likely start in the GI Curlin Florida Derby Mar. 30 with a half-mile breeze Friday at Palm Beach Downs in company with fellow 'TDN Rising Star' Agate Road (Quality Road). The pair clocked in at :48.89, leaving conditioner Todd Pletcher satisfied with the progress he'd seen since the GIII Holy Bull S. “Fierceness and Agate Road breezed a half together and both did really well, especially Fierceness. [He had] a strong gallop-out, looked good. He's continued to train really good since the Holy Bull,” Pletcher said. He also added that, while Fierceness had also been training well up to his seasonal debut, the race dynamics may've done more against him than they'd initially thought. “[…] I don't think he needed a race. I think our expectations were so high for him that maybe we're not looking at it realistically. If you watch the start of the race, he got slammed pretty hard from both sides. Johnny [Velazquez], in order to execute the game plan, had to use him pretty hard to get to the first turn in the position we wanted to.” “He could have been a little rusty off the layoff, even though he was training great. He was top weight. [There are] a lot of subtle excuses that, for an ordinary horse, you would try to justify it. Last year as a 3-year-old colt, KINGSBARNS (Uncle Mo) kept his perfect record intact when he went gate to wire to win the GII Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds, which secured himself a slot in the GI Kentucky Derby. The Todd Pletcher trainee finished 14th in America's signature race and a bout with colic sidelined him before the GI Belmont S. He did return to be the runner-up in the Pegasus S. at Monmouth Park in mid-June and that was the last time he was seen. Returning here, the colt's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale ticket was originally signed by Tom McCrocklin, agent, on behalf of Champion Equine for $250,000. The bay then brought the fourth highest return when Spendthrift Farm went to $800,000 during the Fasig-Tipton Florida Select 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale during March of the following year. The defection of big-figure maiden winner Speak Easy (Constitution) to Saturday's GII Coolmore Fountain of Youth S. made the task at hand for 'TDN Rising Star' CONQUEST WARRIOR (c, 3, City of Light–Tea Time, by Pulpit) that much easier on paper, and the Courtlandt Farms colorbearer made light work of the six rivals that stuck around to likely punch his ticket to the GI Curlin Florida Derby in four weeks' time. Away only fairly, the 3-5 chalk was handy enough to the early pace of 5-2 second pick Merit (Mastery) banking around the first turn and was settled nicely in fourth by Jose Ortiz through early sections of :23.79 and :47.62. Traveling a path or two away from the inside down the backstretch as the pacesetter opened just a touch of daylight, Conquest Warrior was ridden along just a bit 3 1/2 furlongs out, and when Raguel (Justify) failed to go on, he had dead aim on the pacesetter. Claiming that one more or less on his own courage at the three-sixteenths, Conquest Warrior quickly opened up and was under a full-nelson for the final sixteenth of a mile, stopping the clock in a very respectable 1:50.52 for the nine furlongs on a fast strip. Apprentice jockey Kylie Wellington, who suffered a displaced tibial fracture Thursday at Fair Grounds after being unseated when her mount flipped over, confirmed her prognosis over social media. “As many heard, I had a horse flip on me behind the gates before a race today [Feb. 29]. I have a displaced tibia fracture. It's very unfortunate but I will recover and be back soon. Thanks everyone.” In 2024, Wellington had amassed a record of two wins and 21 on-the-board finishes overall from 68 jumps. She'd visited the winner's enclosure on seven occasions from 106 starts in her first meet at Fair Grounds, and in under a year's time since starting her riding career in May 2023, claims a record of 273-29-25-34 with $526,214 in earnings. But a challenging nine-race program awaits, with no fewer than five of the contests offering free passes into the corresponding race on Mar. 30. RRR Racing's Clapton (Brethren) should prove a handful in his second start since finishing down the field in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic in November. A two-time winner at the graded level in the US last season, the chestnut had the services of Antonio Fresu for the Jan. 26 Al Maktoum Challenge and sat a wide trip by design before staying on for third, beaten five lengths over course and distance. William Buick has the call from Chad Summers this time around. “I'm very happy how the horse has acclimatised since he arrived,” said trainer Chad Summers, a dual winner of the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen with Mind Your Biscuits (Posse). “William [Buick] breezed him for us a few weeks ago and was very happy with him.” Franz Strauss (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}) has run well without winning in three starts this season, two of those over the Meydan 1900 metres, including a runner-up effort in the Al Maktoum Challenge. Richard Mullen rides for Bhupat Seemar from barrier nine. The latter's stable companion Remorse (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) makes a belated return to the races in this spot. A listed winner and runner-up to Hypothetical (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge R3 back in 2022, the Godolphin-bred 7-year-old was third in Round 2 of the Maktoum Challenge last year, was ninth in the G1 Saudi Cup and filled the same spot when beaten 20 lengths by Ushba Tesoro (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) in last year's World Cup. He runs first-up here. —Alan Carasso Sheema Pointer High On Quality A prep race for the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at the end of March, the G2 Dubai City of Gold over 2410 metres on grass attracted a quality field of nine runners. Charlie Appleby saddles a trio of Godolphin entrants in this clash, anchored by Group 3 winner and G1 St Leger runner-up Castle Way (GB) (Almanzor {Fr}). He is the mount of William Buick and breaks from the widest gate in 11. “Castle Way is probably the horse out of my three with the most scope to progress throughout the season,” said Appleby. “He ended his 3-year-old campaign with a couple of strong efforts and is ready to get going again.” Both Warren Point (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Bold Act (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) are entering the fray coming off Pattern race victories–the former in the G3 Dubai Millennium S. earlier this month, and the latter in the GIII Sycamore S. at Keeneland in October. “Warren Point has won over a mile and a half in the past, so stepping back up in trip won't be an issue–he should be bang there at the finish. Bold Act enjoyed travelling last year and put up a good performance to win at Keeneland in the autumn. He heads into this in good nick.” G1 Deutsches Derby victor Sisfahan (Fr) (Isfahan {Ger}) is another runner of note, and he leaves from stall two. —Heather Anderson Swing Vote Looks To Sustain Run In Burj Nahaar Swing Vote (GB) (Shamardal) has been on a serious roll in the Emirates this racing season and will look to take a step towards an appearance in the G2 Godolphin Mile as perhaps the one to beat in Saturday's G3 Burj Nahaar. Trained by Simon and Ed Crisford, who were represented by the tough World Cup runner-up Algiers (Ire) (Shamardal) during last year's Carnival, the 4-year-old won two of four starts on the turf in France last season, but is perfect in three tries on the dirt. Victorious in the lower grades going a mile up the hill at Jebel Ali in December and January, he most recently stamped his authority on the Feb. 10 G3 Jebel Ali Mile, storming home by 3 3/4 lengths. The veteran Hypothetical earned a ticket to the 2022 World Cup by winning Round 3 of the Al Maktoum Challenge, but was well-beaten behind Country Grammer (Tonalist) in the big race and again in a single handicap test last February. The chestnut rebounded from a thrashing in a grass prep Jan. 11 to defeat Southern Artist (Munnings) by three-parts of a length in the G3 Firebreak S. over track and trip Jan. 26. RRR Racing's Sound Money (Flatter) was fourth to Tuz (Oxbow) in Group 3 company on seasonal return and was forced to miss the Firebreak. Saturday's contest is his first try at a mile since finishing second to US champion Cody's Wish (Curlin) in the 2022 GIII Westchester S. at Belmont Park. “He was a bit ring rusty [in the Dubawi S.],” said eight-time UAE champion trainer Doug Watson. “He had a bit of a foot issue four days before and pulled a shoe in the race, so I don't know how much that affected him. He trains like a proper horse and he's a beautiful animal. It was disappointing to miss the Firebreak S., but we had to get him right.” Adding depth to the field are the former American-based gallopers multiple graded stakes winner Laurel River (Into Mischief) for Juddmonte Farms and Three Chimneys Farm's stakes winner and multiple graded stakes-placed King Ottoman (Curlin). Laurel River was seventh in the G3 Al Shindagha Sprint Jan. 26, but the latter makes his first local appearance. Both are trained by Bhupat Seemar. —Alan Carasso Ras Al Khor Riches Up For Grabs Staged as a Group 3 for the first time, the 1400-metre Ras Al Khor on grass sees a pair of runners owned by Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and trained by Michael Costa lock horns on Saturday. Marbaan (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) is the choice of rider Ben Coen, and will race with the addition of a tongue tie and shadow roll. The G2 Vintage S. hero ran 10th in the 1800-metre G2 Singspiel S. behind Naval Power (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) last week and will begin from gate 10 in the 16-horse field. Stablemate Yonafis (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}}) has already been in action twice in February, running second in the Listed Dubai Sprint on Feb. 2, and fifth in the Listed HH The President Cup at Abu Dhabi on Feb. 17. “Marbaan will be better suited to this race with the gear change and application of tongue tie and shadow roll,” said Costa, this season's leading trainer in the UAE. “Yonafis could not look any better, so it was a flip of the coin who Ben wanted to ride.” Godolphin's Noble Dynasty (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is looking for his third victory on the bounce after taking a Newmarket contest and a Lingfield all-weather race in the autumn of 2022. However, he lines up coming off an 15-month break. “Noble Dynasty runs well fresh and looks in great shape,” said Appleby. “He has a nice draw in stall four and should be involved in the finish.” –Heather Anderson Go Chrome Go Makes Local Bow In Mahab Al Shimaal While Kabirkhan swerves Saturday's meeting, his sire is represented by Go Chrome Go (Arg) (California Chrome), who rates a live chance in the 1200-metre G3 Mahab al Shimaal, the final lead-up into the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen. The Southern Hemisphere 5-year-old, now under the care of Julio Olascoaga, is a winner of nine from 15 in Argentina, and rides a five-race winning skein which includes a one-length success in Group 3 company over a mile at La Plata back in July. “He makes his first start a little late in the season, as he had some health issues related to travel that made him lose some time,” said Olascoaga. “He will catch the eye on Saturday as he is a very nice-looking horse by California Chrome.” Freedom Fighter (Violence) is one of three in the race for the Seemar yard, having improved from a first-up sixth in listed company to finish second–albeit a distant one–to the impressive Moubeeb (Flatter) in the Al Shindagha Sprint. The Friday scratchings of the undefeated 3-year-old Ma Yetal (Flameaway) and 110-rated Mubakker (Speightstown) leaves a field of eight Saturday. —Alan Carasso Star Of Mystery Bids To Continue Winning Sequence Improving 3-year-old filly Star Of Mystery (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) puts her unbeaten record at Meydan on the line when she features in a 15-strong field for Saturday's AED1.2-million G3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint sponsored by Emirates Skywards. Trained by Charlie Appleby, Star Of Mystery is seeking her third straight victory at the track and her second over the 1000-metre distance having run out a decisive winner of the G2 Blue Point Sprint when meeting older horses for the first time on last month's Fashion Friday card. Appleby said, “Star Of Mystery has enjoyed a little break since the Blue Point Sprint and a repeat performance of that will make her very competitive again. It's a good field but we are very happy with her.” Czech raider Ponntos (Ire) (Power {GB}) is 1.5kg better off at the weights with Star Of Mystery on Saturday having been beaten 1 3/4 lengths by that rival when runner-up in the Blue Point Sprint, while William Knight's Frost At Dawn (Frosted), the other 3-year-old filly in the line-up, will be bidding for a deserved win after finishing in the money in three of her four starts at Meydan to date, albeit in lesser company. “She's thriving in Dubai and Abbie, who looks after her, is delighted with her,” Knight said of Frost At Dawn. “To be honest, I wish this race was over six furlongs [1200m], but she's shown she's got plenty of toe. It is hard for these 3-year-olds up against the seasoned sprinters, but I'd like to think she has a chance of running in the top three.” –Adam Houghton Does The Shoe Fit? The discussion on who will be the next winner of the Listed Jumeirah 1000 Guineas Sponsored by Emirates SkyCargo begins with the three-for-three Cinderella's Dream (GB) (Shamardal). Just like subsequent G1 1000 Guineas heroine Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), the Charlie Appleby-trained filly won the Jumeirah Fillies' Classic at the beginning of the month, and Mawj was an 8 1/2-length winner of the 2022 edition of this race, also in the royal blue of Godolphin. “Cinderella's Dream is in great order and stepping back up to a mile is going to suit,” said Appleby. “The form of her latest win has been franked by Beautiful Love and she looks the one to beat.” Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners has been involved in some noteworthy wins on an international scale far from their California base–G1 VRC Oaks heroine Pinot (Aus) (Pierro {Aus}) to name one–and their Geologist (GB) (Territories {Ire}) looms the main danger in the 1600-metre turf affair. Well-seasoned with nine starts, especially compared to some of her rivals, the listed winner and Group 3 -placed filly was most recently fourth to Cinderella's Dream in the Jumeirah Fillies' Classic after taking the overland route the whole way around. –Heather Anderson Legend Of Time Has The Hat-Trick In His Sights Appleby is also responsible for the standout contender in the AED800,000 Listed Jumeirah Classic sponsored by Arabian Adventures which concludes the card, namely Legend Of Time (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who has emulated Star Of Mystery by winning his two previous races at Meydan in 2024, including a two-length victory in last month's Jumeirah Guineas. Legend Of Time, who will be suited by stepping up to 1800 metres, is joined in the line-up by stablemate Musical Act (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) to give Appleby another very strong hand in the Jumeirah Classic, a contest in which he saddled the first three home when Naval Power (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) beat One Nation (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Highbank (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) in 2023. “Legend Of Time has done well since the Jumeirah Guineas and this was always the target,” said Appleby. “Musical Act was a bit unfortunate in the Jumeirah Guineas, when he got caught up in an early speed duel and didn't finish his race. A new $25-million racing and incentive series connecting Preakness 149, The California Crown, and the 2025 Pegasus World Cup was announced via press release by 1/ST Friday. Featuring more than $12.5-million in elevated purses and $7.5-million in incentives for both dirt and turf runners, there is a $5-million additional bonus on the line to the owner (s) of the horse who wins the 149th GI Preakness S., GI California Crown, and GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational. Turf horses will have a similar series and prize structure, with a $2.5-million bonus offered to the connections who win the GIII Dinner Party S., GII California Crown John Henry Turf, and GI Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational. Also included in the announcement was the news that the purse for the second jewel of the Triple Crown will increase to $2-million, and coupled with elevated purses in other contests, will make Preakness 149 Saturday the most lucrative in the event's history with $3.3-million to be won. The first race of the new series will run May 18 at Pimlico Race Course. Replacing the Awesome Again S., the GI California Crown will debut on what is dubbed a 'reimagined opening day experience' Sept. 28 for the track's 2024 fall meet. The $1-million contest for 3-year-olds and older will run at 1 1/8-miles while the GII California Crown Eddie D. Turf Sprint and GII California Crown John Henry Turf will both feature $750,000 purses in what will be California's richest day of racing. The anchor leg of the series goes to the 2025 Pegasus World Cup Jan. 25, which will feature the $3-million Invitational and $1-million Turf Invitational. The live broadcast will include the presentation of the potential $7.5-million bonus should any horse accomplish the feat of sweeping the series. 1/ST will also put up $5-million for a Coast-to-Coast Pick'Em Challenge sweepstakes, requiring fans and bettors to successfully pick the first four finishers of each series race, in order. Steve Asmussen has indicated an interest in saddling a starter at the 2024 Sandy Ride at Red Mile Quarter Horse meet, according to stallionesearch.com. The Hall of Famer did not have a set number of confirmed runners, stall applications were due Thursday, Feb. 29, but Sandy Ridge racing manager Terry Oliver was reportedly instrumental in getting Asmussen back to his roots in Quarter Horse racing. His family had been involved in the industry in the early 1970s, originating with parents Marilyn and Keith Asmussen. It would be his first such starter since 2014. Kevin Costello has officially won the 2023 National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) Tour, the first ever in the contest's 16 year history to win twice, announced the NTRA via press release Friday. Having previously won in 2021 and qualifying every year since 2016, Costello secured a seat to the 2025 NHC in addition to the prize money and is eligible to take home a $5-million bonus should he become a three-peat winner at the 25th NHC competition in Las Vegas. Costello finished the 2023 Tour season with 24,053 points from 31 contests. It was a close race for spots behind him as Michael Mulvihill finished in second with 22,991 points; Evan Trommer finished in third with 22,709 points; Sally Goodall placed fourth at 22,600 points; and Brett Wiener came in fifth with 22,399 points. Marco Ghiani, the champion apprentice in the UK in 2021, has been handed a 34-day ban by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA)'s Whip Review Committee. Ghiani broke the whip rules for the fifth time in the last six months. A total of nine days of his ban have been deferred for a period of six months, and he will also need to complete a two-day training course. The rider already has a win at Royal Ascot to his credit with Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), and is also a group-winning rider. Previously suspended for six months due to a cocaine positive, the rider was aboard group winners Mill Stream (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) in the G3 Prix de Meautry and Roberto Escobarr (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G3 Italian St Leger. Also receiving a lengthy ban is apprentice Tommie Jakes, who has to serve a 24-day ban. There were few more deserving winners at this year's ITBA Awards than Amy Marnane. At just 30 years of age, Marnane has crammed a lot in. From breeding to pinhooking and even consigning horses under her own name, Marnane has accomplished plenty in the industry, which led to her scooping the Next Generation Award. Of course, that award was tinged with sadness after the death of Marnane's mother, Theresa, at the age of 61 in December. In this week's Q&A, Marnane discusses how the bloodstock industry has served as a tonic in times of sadness, her hopes for Givemethebeatboys and much more. In all of his 25 years hosting the awards, Master of Ceremonies Leo Powell said he'd never seen a standing ovation like the one you received at the ITBA Awards last Sunday? That must have been pretty special. It was a very emotional night. Sure I just thought there would be a small award and everyone would clap but there was a standing ovation when I went up to the stage and then again when I came back down after I got the award. It was just unbelievable. It meant a lot and it certainly put a lump in my throat. Although I might not show it on the outside, it was very special. For the ITBA to even put my name to paper initially, and then to be picked as the winner, it's just incredible. Obviously the award was tinged with sadness after we lost Mum in December but this industry is like a big family. Whenever anyone is going through something, the whole industry rallies around them. It's very special. We've been through some desperately sad times as an industry. Take the death of Pat Smullen or Jack de Bromhead as an example. The sport tends to pull together in hard times and I gather it was no different when Theresa passed away. To that extent, I think we can be immensely proud of our industry. Completely. It's an amazing game. We found out that Mum had cancer the morning of the breeze at the Goresbridge Breeze-Up Sale. We tried to keep it quiet but people knew that there was something up and that something was wrong. By the time the yearling sales came around, the word was out that Mum was sick. Any consignment we went to visit, you wouldn't be met with a, 'hello, how are ya? What would you like to see?' You were met with a, 'how's your Mum and is there anything we can do?' Mum passed away during the December Mares Sale at Tattersalls. It's the biggest funeral I have ever seen but, if that sale hadn't been on, there would have been even more people there. The phones were hopping. We got through Christmas and headed off to Australia for a holiday. Even at the Goffs February Sale just gone, people have still been amazing. Frances Smullen, in particular, has been very good to us. Obviously she has been through everything with Pat and was there to offer us a helping hand. I must say that, in the sales ring or on the track, everyone in the industry is ready for a dog fight but, when you go through something like this, you couldn't ask for better people to rally around you. The industry has shown this time and time again and I'm hugely proud to be a part of it. Your life has been a soundtrack of horses for as long as you can remember. I can only imagine that, for all of the big days and success that you have enjoyed, the horses and working closely with them were just as important to you when you were going through such difficult times. Absolutely. Going out to the yard every morning and keeping yourself busy was important. Con is a bit like a child, you need to keep him busy all the time, but even he will tell you the very same-it was getting up every morning and getting into the yard to watch the horses canter or to simply just be around them, that proved to be a major therapy for us and helped us to take our minds off everything else that was going on. They're incredible animals and the team of people we have working with us are equally as important. I couldn't thank them enough for what they have done for us. They would literally stand on their heads for you. They look after us just as much as they look after the horses. Particularly Mike O'Brien, Mr Ribchester himself, he has been an absolutely saint. He manages everything at home and without him we'd be lost. You've gathered up a lot of experience in the industry in your 30 years. Is there a certain path you'd like to go down or are you happy to continue as you are with your finger in so many pies? I think it's important not to put all of your eggs in one basket. Some years the breeze-up horses can be very lucrative and the next year it might be the foals that you bred or the yearlings that you pinhooked that do well. Once you have your finger in every pie, something is bound to go right every year. That has to happen to keep the whole thing afloat. If the truth be known, we're probably completely addicted. If there's any Flat sale on, we'll be there. Trading horses is our business. I suppose you're getting sick talking about Givemethebeatboys (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}) but he provided you all with plenty to smile about last year and the best may yet be to come in 2024. I'll never get sick of talking about that horse. He has been a revelation. The Brickley brothers, who sold him to us, have been unbelievable and have tracked his journey the whole way through. The horse was bred by Mrs Rogers at Airlie Stud and you just can't beat those families. Givemethebeatboys got us through last year. To go and make that kind of money at the Goffs London Sale, to win the Marble Hill and to run such a good race in the Coventry Stakes, he's just been phenomenal for us. He's done very well over the winter-he's grown and filled out. Hopefully this time next year we'll be sending mares to him. The Commonwealth Cup would presumably be the big aim for him this year? Look, Royal Ascot is what it's all about for us. We finished second in the Commonwealth Cup with Sands Of Mali (Fr) so we'd love to go and win it. The King's Stand Stakes is also an option and, to be honest, it would just be a dream to win any of the big sprint races with him. The Sands family own the majority share in Givemethebeatboys and they have been so good to us. They are really, nice genuine people and I just hope the horse can go on for them this year and that we have a very exciting horse to look forward to together this summer. What was the result that got the whole thing off the ground for you? I had just finished my honours degree in Equine Science when I went over to America in 2015. I had been buying a few foals here and there in Ireland and, before I went to America, Con told me that if I saw a nice foal in America, to go and get it bought. I saw this Orb foal-it was his first crop-and I bought him for $13,000. I gave him to Gerry Dilger, who has been so good to me, to prep him for the year. Gerry rang me and told me that the horse was getting into Book 2 at Keeneland in September. I was expecting him to tell me that the horse got into Book 4 or something. We chanced it anyway and the horse went on to make $125,000 and he turned out to be a Stakes horse. We were delighted with the price and even more delighted that he turned out to be a good racehorse. His name was Zero Gravity. What do you do with $125,000 in your mid-20s? I know what I'd do! I reinvested the money. Con told me to go back and buy a couple of breezers and I did. I bought an Uncle Mo colt for $40,000. We brought him to the Craven Breeze-Up Sale and he made 150,000gns. He turned out to be a very good horse called Corrosive and was sold on again at the Tattersalls Horses-In-Training Sale in October 2018 for 450,000gns, so that was another good result. To have someone like Con in your corner must be brilliant. I know he said it half tongue in cheek at the awards night on Sunday, but you really couldn't have learned off many better people in the industry, could you? I'd never say this to him but I'm probably the luckiest person in the world. We get up at seven o'clock in the morning to feed the horses together. I watch them galloping with him, and see all the things that he does with them, which is a lot-there's a treadmill, a swimming pool, the go away to gallop and we've five different gallops. His mind is working overtime. He never dwells on the past and never stops thinking about what he can do next to improve. Whether that's staying up to three in the morning Googling how to produce his own Alfalfa hay in Ireland or looking at the next gadget for the yard, he never stops. He'd always say that you never stop learning in this game and he's a prime example of that. He's a bit of a freak lately. It's not just Con that you have struck up a good relationship with. You've enjoyed some good results with his brother and your uncle David through buying a number of yearlings to race in the famous MRC International silks each year. Lady Tilbury (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) and Night Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) are two good examples given that both horses made six figures at the horses-in-training sale last year. David has been so good to us and the whole family has grown closer in recent times. I buy all of David's yearlings and we've had plenty of luck. We never spend huge money on a horse and we have to try and think outside the box. Lady Tilbury cost us just 18,000gns and was sold to Paddy Twomey for 150,000gns and I hope she's very, very lucky for him. She's a very good filly. Night Moon came from Germany. He's a bit different to the horses that I usually buy but he won impressively for David at Listowel and was sold to Harold Kirk on behalf of Willie Mullins for 100,000gns. He could be an exciting horse going forward over hurdles for them. There you go. You grew up watching with the Bansha Bullets but a nice horse is a nice horse no matter what the code and you can clearly spot them, whether they are out-and-out speedsters or middle-distance types. What is it that you look for at the sales? You know a nice horse when it comes out of the box. The horse literally needs to take one or two steps and it's either a yes or a no. You need an intelligent-looking horse who has a good ear and a good eye. Different people like Mike and Mary Ryan, Niall Brennan, Gerry Dilger, Peter and Ross Doyle and even a lot of vets, they'd forgive a horse for not being perfect in front. I don't think we should start messing with them in terms of putting screws in and things like that. It can cause more trouble than good. I usually find that, if a horse is strong enough behind, he'll keep the weight off his front legs. Finally, your family is known for unleashing top-notch two-year-old talent so I can't let you go without nominating one or two for us to keep an eye on this year. I wish we had a Pinatubo (Ire) in the yard. We tried and tried to buy one last year but we kept coming up short. I think he is in for a big year. We have a couple by Sand Of Mali and they are very nice. They have super temperaments and have huge hind quarters. His progeny remind me a lot of him because they have such good attitudes. We have 24 to breeze this year. There are some very special horses in there-four Blue Points, four Havana Greys, a very talented Starspangledbanner (Aus) out of a sister to The Tin Man (GB) and a half-brother to Sands Of Mali himself who goes really well. Slider (Jimmy Creed), third last out in the GII San Vincente S. to Nysos (Nyquist), will miss Saturday's Gotham S. at Aqueduct with a bruised front foot, according to part-owners Rob Murphy and West Point Thoroughbreds' Terry Finley. Murphy, one of the West Point Partners, said that Slider had shipped to New York on Tuesday to prepare for the race, but came up with the issue Friday morning. Finley, a partner in the horse, said that X-rays of Slider's foot and ankle had come up negative. Slider broke his maiden in his second start at Del Mar on Sept. 9, before winning the Speakeasy S. at Santa Anita. He was 9th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint before making his 2024 debut in the Jan. 6 San Vincente. The partners had no word on Slider's next start. Murphy pitched in the major leagues for 11 years and was one of the most effective left-handed relievers in the game, playing primarily for the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Red Sox.
