  1. Aquacade will contest the Group 1 Zabeel Classic (2050m) on Boxing Day. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) Gifted performer Aquacade has bounced back from a last-start hiccup and is on target to execute a long-term plan when she steps out at Pukekohe Park on Boxing Day. Lance Noble will be chasing a special victory with the five-year-old in the Group 1 Zabeel Classic (2050m), sponsored by the mare’s breeders and owners Cambridge Stud. Noble is the private trainer for farm principals Brendan and Jo Lindsay and the weight-for-age feature has been a long-term target for the daughter of Dundeel. Two runs back, Aquacade was a dominant winner of the Group 3 Balmerino Stakes (2050m) before she was a beaten favourite when fourth in the Group 3 Counties Cup (2100m), after which the reason for her below par showing became evident. “It wasn’t a bad run with topweight (59kg), but it was just a bit flat for her so we got her vetted out the next day,” Noble said. “We scoped her and she had a bit of mucus in her lungs and a viral thing going on so we treated that and she seems back to her best. “I hate excuses, but there was a legitimate one and she’s bounced back and her work has been great. “Since the beginning of the season, we have aimed her at this Group One. She’s won a Group Two and a Group Three and we’re a breeding farm so this is so important.” Aquacade is one of five strong Boxing Day chances for Noble, with the team to be partnered by Vinnie Colgan after the suspension of regular rider and Jockeys’ Premiership leader Warren Kennedy. “I feel for Warren because he has put a lot of work into these horses,” Noble said. “We’re very fortunate to get someone of Vinnie’s ability to ride them all, he is in great form and he’s got the big race temperament and he’ll do a great job for us. “Vinnie came out and rode work here on Tuesday with Warren, who gave him a few insights into the horse and that was great.” Talented Embellish filly Luberon will run in the Group 2 Auckland Guineas (1400m) off the back her fifth in the Group 1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m). “She went a pretty bold race considering she was three wide for a lot of it and probably just didn’t stay the mile with the run she had,” Noble said. “She’s dropping back to 1400m, which might be her best distance at this stage, but it is a super strong race, they all are as you would expect on one of these days. “Unfortunately, she has drawn the outside (12) which won’t make it easy, but she is very well and we’ve been happy with her work.” Fellow three-year-old About Time will face the toughest test of her brief career when the daughter of American Pharoah runs in the Group 2 Eight Carat Classic (1600m). “She’s an interesting runner and very lightly raced. She ran into a good one (About A Girl) when third at her first start and then her win was super,” Noble said. “I thought her run in the Listed race (Eagle Memorial, 1500m) for third was again very good and it was her first time racing that way around. She got a little bit lost up the straight and hit the line well.” Flamebird was a most recent course and distance winner and will attack from the minimum (54kg). “It’s her first time in open company and has a light weight and her record at Pukekohe is strong, as was her last start win, and she looks nicely placed,” Noble said. Pierro mare Dazzled has recent wins on the course and at Tauranga to back her claims. “If Dazzled can replicate her form from her last three starts, and I don’t see any reason why she can’t, she’s got to be a good chance,” Noble said. 2. What Eagle Farm Races Where Eagle Farm Racecourse – 230 Lancaster Rd, Ascot QLD 4007 When Saturday, December 23, 2023 First Race 12:13pm AEST Visit Dabble The Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes will headline a massive 10-race card at Eagle Farm Racecourse this Saturday afternoon. Plenty of rain is forecast for the Brisbane area on Friday and Saturday, and even though the track is rated a Good 4 on Thursday, the meeting is expected to get underway on Soft to Heavy ground. The rail will be pushed out to the +4m position for the entire circuit, with the opening race scheduled to jump at 12:13pm AEST. B.J. McLachlan Stakes Tip: Storm Boy Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott send their exciting two-year-old colt Storm Boy to Eagle Farm for his second career start. The favourite for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic was a dominant winner on debut at Rosehill, where he defeated Traffic Warden by 2.3 lengths over 1100m on December 2. Since then, the runner-up has franked the form with a strong win at Caulfield. From barrier five, Adam Hyeronimus should have no trouble crossing the field to take the lead and run the race to suit. B.J. McLachlan Stakes Race 6 – #1 Storm Boy (5) 2yo Colt | T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | J: Adam Hyeronimus (57kg) -250 with Dabble Bernborough Plate Tip: Acquitted Acquitted has started this preparation in great style, recording a second-place finish at Newcastle first-up before winning easily second-up in the Listed Tails Stakes at Doomben on December 2. This son of Night Of Thunder will stay at the mile and should be at peak fitness third-up. James Orman has retained the ride, and from barrier seven, he should be able to settle in a similar position midfield and run over the top of his rivals late. Bernborough Plate Race 7 – #1 Acquitted (7) 7yo Gelding | T: Kris Lees | J: James Orman (57kg) +150 with Picklebet Falvelon Tip: Legal Esprit Legal Esprit stuck on well to finish third behind Zoustyle in the Group 3 George Moore Stakes last start at Doomben. This five-year-old gelding is third-up this weekend and drops back to Listed grade, yet he will only carry 54kg and should get a great run behind a hot speed from barrier seven. If Robbie Dolan can settle off the rail in the first five or six, Legal Esprit will make his presence felt late at a great each-way price with top betting sites. Falvelon Race 8 – #10 Legal Esprit (7) 5yo Gelding | T: Donald Baker | J: Robbie Dolan (54kg) +2000 with Neds Best Bet at Eagle Farm: Bezique In the penultimate, Bezique will be seeking a hat-trick of wins to kick off her third racing preparation. Last time out, this daughter of Spirit Of Boom saluted as a heavily backed favourite at Doomben over 1200m on December 8. Ben Thompson has ridden the four-year-old mare in both of her starts this time in and knows her very well. With little to no speed influences in this race, Bezique should be able to settle in the top two before clicking it up at the top of the straight to pull away late. Best Bet Race 9 – #10 Bezique (7) 4yo Mare | T: Tony Gollan | J: Ben Thompson (58kg) +180 with Betfair Next Best at Eagle Farm: Ultimate Outcome Ultimate Outcome has finished inside the top four in four of his five starts this prepartion, including a win three starts back over 1400m at the Sunshine Coast. Last start, the Stuart Kendrick-trained galloper ran on strongly from the back of the field to finish fourth behind Crazy Brave at the Sunshine Coast, so he should appreciate the step up to 1600m now that he is at peak fitness. Ben Thompson will look to settle closer to the speed from barrier four, and if he gets even luck in the straight, Ultimate Outcome will play a prominent role in the finish. 3. Elegant Lady winning at Ashburton on Wednesday. Photo: Race Images South Trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson are casting their eyes towards stakes targets with their in-form mare Elegant Lady following her win at Ashburton on Wednesday. It was the third consecutive win for the daughter of Highly Recommended, who was duly backed into odds-on favouritism for Wednesday’s race following a near faultless preparation. Elegant Lady settled midfield for apprentice jockey Lily Sutherland before she asked the four-year-old to improve three-wide at the 600m mark and she loomed ominously at the turn. Her backers were put at ease when she quickly hit the front and ran out a one length victor. “It was another really good win by a progressive mare and a lovely ride by Lily (Sutherland),” Walker said. “She’s a nice staying prospect and we have got the Dunedin Gold Cup (Listed, 2400m) in the back of our minds, and an opportunity to look for some black-type.” The $100,000 Dunedin Gold Cup is contested on Saturday, February 3 at Wingatui. Elegant Lady was bred by the Te Akau Cherry Blossom Syndicate, and Te Akau principal David Ellis said it is great to enjoy a golden run with their homebred mare. “She’s a homebred filly that has strengthened and developed into a beautiful looking mare,” Ellis said. “She was pretty well placed by Mark (Walker) and Sam (Bergerson) to win again in the same grade, and it’s as much about keeping their confidence high when aiming for a Cup race. “She’s always been incredibly consistent and sometimes horses that obviously try as hard as she does just need that extra bit of maturity to start winning. “She had no trouble seeing out the 2200m, has stamina in her dam line, and stepping up to a mile and a half (2400m) may suit her. “She’s a lovely mare, has a great attitude, and it is good to see her winning races in the south after I’d bought her mother at a South Island sale.” More horse racing news View the full article
  4. What Moonee Valley Races Where Moonee Valley Racecourse – 1 McPherson St, Moonee Ponds VIC 3039 When Saturday, December 23, 2023 First Race 12:15pm AEDT Visit Dabble Moonee Valley is the destination for metropolitan racing in Victoria on Saturday afternoon. With a perfect summer’s day forecast, we will be racing on a Good 4 surface throughout, with the rail returning to its true position. The first of 10 races at The Valley is set to commence at 12:15pm AEDT. Best Bet at Moonee Valley: Yellow Sam With a BM64 win at Donald and three strong placings in town prior to heading to the paddock, Yellow Sam will be looking to add to a smart first-up record. The Ready For Victory mare has two wins and two seconds from four fresh runs, and from barrier one under Fred Kersley, she draws to gain every advantage in running. She looks set to stalk market fancy South Of Houston throughout, and with even luck on the home turn, Yellow Sam can sprint the best in the run home. Best Bet Race 6 – #8 Yellow Sam (1) 4yo Mare | T: Lindsey Smith | J: Fred Kersley (57kg) +320 with Picklebet Next Best at Moonee Valley: Veloce Carro This four-year-old gelding managed to put 1.8 lengths on the likes of El Soleado and Miss Icelandic at the Moonee Valley 1200m on November 17, and he returns to the track and trip after five weeks between runs. From barrier four, Carleen Hefel should have no issue landing the plumb spot and stalking the speed throughout. With Hefel’s 1.5kg claim getting the son of Nicconi in with 58.5kg, Veloce Carro should have no problem rounding up the leaders and putting the race away in a couple of strides. Next Best Race 10 – #6 Veloce Carro (4) 4yo Gelding | T: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace | J: Carleen Hefel (a1.5) (60kg) +260 with Dabble Best Value at Moonee Valley: Regal Zeus John McArdle’s Regal Zeus was a determined Geelong BM64 winner on November 30 and looks set to go on with the job on Saturday. The three-year-old gelding tends to hold a handy position in running, and he looks set to gain a relatively uncontested lead from barrier two in this 1600m affair. With even luck and a cheap sectional or two, Regal Zeus can kick off the home turn and land the spoils at a nice price with horse racing bookmakers. 5. David Eustace (right) is set to train in Hong Kong from the 2024/25 season. (Photo: Scott Barbour/Racing Photos) In a joint statement on Thursday afternoon, Ciaron Maher and David Eustace announced their training partnership would end. Eustace has taken up an invitation to train in Hong Kong and is expected to leave Ciaron Maher Racing at the end of January. At 32, Eustace has been a key player in Maher’s rapid rise to the top of Australian horse racing training ranks and has been a co-trainer for the past five years. Since joining forces as training partners, Maher and Eustace have combined for more than 1600 winners, including 30 at Group 1 level. The pair have won the Victorian Trainers Championship for the past four years and claimed the National Trainers Championship for the 2022/23 season. In isolation, the duo will forever be known for training Gold Trip to Melbourne Cup glory in 2022. “This is a bittersweet announcement. Bitter, because it will be difficult to replace someone with David’s skills, work ethic and all-round contribution,” Maher said in a press release on Thursday. “Sweet, because it’s a fitting reward for David and at the same time gives CMR a great opportunity to evolve and develop.” Eustace added: “As Ciaron has said, it’s a bittersweet day. “Obviously, I am thrilled to be offered the position in Hong Kong; it has always been a dream of since I was a boy. “It’s exciting and a challenge I will relish; however, I will miss being part of this extraordinary operation.” Ciaron Maher Racing has served as a strong base for up-and-coming trainers such as Annabel Neasham, Lucy Yeomans and Jack Bruce, with Eustace the latest to venture out on his own. The news of Eustace’s move was confirmed by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Licensing Committee, with the Englishman granted a trainer’s licence for the 2024/25 racing season. 6. Savatoxl is on his way back to Alice Springs after an unsuccessful stint in Perth. (Brett Holburt/Racing Photos) Savatoxl may not have conquered the west, but Alice Springs trainer Will Savage has no regrets making the 4230km trek to Perth for the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Damien Oliver Gold Rush (1400m) at Ascot. Both races had a $1.5 million purse, with Savatoxl finishing 16th in the Winterbottom on December 2 and 13th in the Gold Rush on December 16. To have had a runner in the Gold Rush is an occasion Savage won’t easily forget after Damien Oliver pulled off a miraculous win aboard the Nick Ryan-trained Manhamek in the champion jockey’s final ever race. “Taking Savatoxl to Perth was a good experience, he went alright,” Savage said from Ceduna in western South Australia on Wednesday en route back to Alice Springs. “There was a big atmosphere at Ascot on Saturday, the whole city of Perth got behind Damien Oliver — it was a top day, that’s for sure. “I actually thought Manhamek was one of the hardest to beat, but he wasn’t in good shape at the home turn. “To be honest, I wasn’t watching Manhemek in the run because I watching my bloke. “When he won I sort of thought, ‘well, that was fitting’. “The roar of the crowd when Damien hit the front was deafening. “Everyone stood up, it was just electrifying — I’ve never experienced anything like that before.” Savatoxl, an eight-year-old gelding, has tasted interstate success in South Australia and Victoria, including a Group 1 triumph in The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville in 2021. Savage, who purchased the horse at the Inglis Yearling Sale during the 2017 Alice Springs Cup Carnival, had every right to dream big when Savatoxl won nine of his first 10 starts in the Red Centre. For two years, the son of Kuroshio raced in Darwin for trainer Gary Clarke and then in Victoria, SA and Queensland for Ballarat trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy before heading back to the Northern Territory at the end of 2022. Under Savage’s guidance, Savatoxl returned to racing in April and won his first race at Pioneer Park in three years during the Alice Springs Cup Carnival. It was then off to Adelaide, Darwin, back to Adelaide and then Melbourne before heading to Perth for the first time. Savage had every reason to be excited when the gelding settled in front in both Ascot features and led into the home straight before the backmarkers swooped at the 200m. Having enjoyed his time in WA, Savage said that Savatoxl gave it his best shot. “I was actually stabled at Bunbury,” he said. “They’ve got a beautiful course there and everything was nice. “Savatoxl fitted in well there, he was very happy. “The facilities at Ascot were first class, and the track was in good condition. “The Perth experience was definitely up there with Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane, that’s for sure. “I just wish I hadn’t missed a couple of important gallops in Alice Springs before we went over, but that was unavoidable. “He was fit and definitely improved in the Gold Rush, and although I don’t like to make excuses he was a bit under done to start with. “But as far as that goes the horse is fine, he’s pulled up good and he’ll keep going. “Nothing planned for him right now, but we’re heading home now and we’ll weigh up where we’re going to go from there.” Savage expects to be home by the weekend, and it will be straight back to work following recent confirmation that the Alice Springs Cup Carnival will start earlier in 2024. Instead of kicking off in early April and ending on the first Sunday in May, the five days of racing will commence on March 17 with Cup Day set for April 7. Apart from Savatoxl, who is bound for the paddock, Savage has 10 other horses, and he confessed before leaving for Perth that they wouldn’t return until February. “My horses are all having a little break, but as soon as I get home I’ll get them going again,” he said. On his first Saturday back after a stint in Hong Kong racing, McNeil was able to return in style. There were plenty of admirers for the well-backed Snapper ($5), who was able to jump cleanly from barrier eight, before leading towards the near-side running rail of the Flemington straight. Snapper managed to hold off the fast-finishing Rose Quartz ($4), who just ran out of time chasing down the leader, who had got some cheap sectionals earlier in the race. 2022: Halvorsen picks up second Standish Following a decent spell and a different training routines, Halvorsen ($7.50) returned to winning ways in the 2022 Standish Handicap. Having won the race in 2020, Jamie Kah piloted the Robbie Girffiths & Matthew de Kock-trained veteran to feature success. Despite giving race favourite It’sourtime ($3.40) a 2kg advantage, Halvorsen managed to build through his gears perfectly to blouse the favourite in the shadows of the winning post, with The Astrologist ($5) back in third. The win handed Jamie Kah her second straight win in the Standish Handicap, having steered Sirius Suspect to victory 12 months prior. 2021: Sirius Statement runs rivals ragged Having placed in three of his last four starts at Stakes level, the Saab Hasan-trained Sirius Suspect broke his duck when leading throughout in the 2021 Standish Handicap. Ridden perfectly by Jamie Kah, the Flemington specialist managed to hold out his rivals when it mattered most, and in doing so handed trainer Saab Hasan his first stakes winner since Shoreham won the Group 3 Easter Cup in 2018. 2020: Halvorsen continues to relish Flemington straight Queensland-based Andrew Mallyon returned to Flemington to ride Halvorsen in the 2020 Standish Handicap, and the flight was well worth it, as the Robbie Griffiths-trained sprinter continues his strong affiliation with the Flemington straight. Having won his previous two starts at the track, Halvorsen made no mistake in the Standish, when getting the better of $3 race favourite Bold Star. In the aftermath of the controversial running of Saturday's Great White Way S. at Aqueduct, in which Brick Ambush (Laoban) crossed the wire second but was disqualified and placed last, outspoken owner Mike Repole has called for the resignation of The Jockey Club's president and CEO Jim Gagliano and its chairman Stuart Janney III. He did so Wednesday in a post to his account on the social media website X. Repole, who did not have a horse in the race, recently announced the formation of The National Thoroughbred Alliance (NTA), an organization he hopes can bring needed change to a sport he has said is rudderless and in steep decline. “I'm asking for the immediate resignation of both the Chairman/CEO and President of The Jockey Club and I appeal to the board members of The Jockey Club to terminate the operating leadership,” Repole wrote. “The industry needs help, we are in an extreme crisis. Let's take action!!!!!” Neither Gagliano nor Janney responded to a request for comment at deadline for this story. The Jockey Club employs Samantha Randazzo, one of the three stewards working at the NYRA tracks. Other than that, it was unclear why Repole placed the blame for controversy on The Jockey Club. He did, however, make it clear that he is frustrated with the organization and labeled it the “old guard.” In a roughly run race, there was an incident near the quarter pole in which three horses came together, bumped and were steadied. At the time, Brick Ambush was racing well outside of that trio, kept a straight path and did not make contact with another horse. The consensus since the race is that the stewards mistakenly took down the wrong horse. Race winner Antonio of Venice (Laoban) may have started the pile-up when he came off the rail under Manny Franco after being blocked. It's also possible that the stewards mistook Brick Ambush for Solo's Furry (Solomini), who may have come over a path or two. Brick Ambush was racing outside of Solo's Fury, who was eased after the incident, and the jockeys of both horses wore green silks. Brick Ambush's owners Dean and Patti Reeves attempted to appeal the decision, but were informed by the New York Gaming Commission that disqualifications are final once the race is made official and cannot be reversed. The disqualification cost the owners second-place money of $100,000. Not only did the stewards disqualify Brick Ambush, they handed his jockey, Junior Alvarado, a three-day suspension for careless riding. “Dean and Patti Reeves are great owners and wonderful people,” Repole wrote. “This sport is very fortunate to have them. The events at Aqueduct last Saturday were brutally unfair to them. Their horse should have been placed first, instead he was disqualified. The bettors, the fans, the trainers, jockeys and owners were blatantly hurt in this situation. With no governing body in place or people policing the sport, they can't even appeal an atrocious ruling. “The more I dig deeper into this situation, the more I place the blame on the operating leaders, Chairman/CEO and President of The Jockey Club,” Repole wrote. “I have an incredible respect for the great leaders on the board of The Jockey Club. They have great passion for this sport. Let's unite and work together and rebuild The Jockey Club into a trusting organization that can represent and govern this wonderful sport while working with all people associated in the industry to make racing better. We all need to have an immense sense of urgency and we must move quickly.” The post After Great White Way Stakes Fiasco, Repole Calls for Jockey Club Leaders to Resign appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 14. Sagunto will attempt to go back-to-back in the Group 3 Manawatu Cup (2300m) on Saturday at Trentham. Photo: Peter Rubery (Race Images Palmerston North) Free-going stayer Sagunto has been a loyal servant of Peter and Shaun McKay’s stable and he will spearhead the father and son’s team at Trentham on Saturday. The eight-year-old will defend his title in the Group 3 Manawatu Cup (2300m), in which barnmate Langkawi also looms as a serious chance for the Matamata trainers. Eight-time winner Sagunto will follow an identical path to last year, having finished fourth in an open handicap at Pukekohe ahead of another southern sojourn. “He’s definitely better for that run and he was carrying 61kg and he comes down to a nice weight (55kg) this time with the topweight (Colorado Star) pushing a few of them down, so it’s worked out well,” Peter McKay said. “It didn’t help that he got taken on last time and I was expecting him to pull up and run last on the corner, but he dug deep. “In his lead-up race last year he did run last and then came out and won the Cup so hopefully he does it again.” Lisa Allpress successfully combined with Sagunto 12 months ago and she will be reunited with the son of O’Reilly on Saturday. “She obviously knows how to ride him and lets him roll and do his thing,” McKay said. Safely through the weekend, Sagunto may again tackle the Listed Marton Cup (2200m) and the Group 3 Trentham Stakes (2100m), having finished runner-up in both events last season. Langkawi gave a strong account of himself at his latest outing when he ran second for apprentice Jim Chung, who will take the mount again, on the course earlier this month. “It was a good run, he jumped and pulled quite hard. He was instructed to bring him out into the better part of the track and he kicked again,” McKay said. “He’s a funny horse and needs something to chase and he was out there by himself with his ears pricked. In the last couple of strides he spotted the winner (Fierce Flight) coming inside him and had another dive.” The stable is also looking forward to the debut run of Eminent colt Rocky Marciano. “He’s had two trials and the first one was disastrous, he went up in the gates and he sat back and then rolled up to them the last bit,” McKay said. “He had a few days in the paddock before he trialled again and he jumped and sat outside the leader and then blew out. He’s had a couple of nice gallops since.” The stable will also be represented by the capable pair of Bad ‘N’ Bouj and Wolfgang in the Noel Eales Memorial Cup (1600m). The former will be dropping significantly in grade after she tailed the field home in the Group 3 Eagle Technology Stakes (1600m) behind El Vencedor and McKay was forgiving of that performance. “They went very slowly and when she went to go, they sprinted and wherever they were around the corner is where they finished, bar the winner who left them to it,” he said. “Her start before, she got back and couldn’t get a run and ran home well. She loves Trentham and I think she will be a very good chance.” Wolfgang has also performed well on the track in the past and from four appearances has a distance victory to his credit and three placings, including a second as a juvenile in the Listed Wellesley Stakes (1000m). 15. Trainers Bev and Ken Kelso. Photo: Trish Dunell Regally-bred filly My Annie Belle is set to make her much anticipated debut at Matamata on Friday. The three-year-old daughter of Snitzel is a half-sister to 14-time Group One winner Melody Belle and stakes winner Tutukaka, and breeder-owner Marie Leicester is hoping she can leave her mark on the track under the guidance of trainers Ken and Bev Kelso. She has had two trials to date, including finishing fourth in her 900m heat at Taupo last month, and while happy with their charge ahead of her debut, the Kelsos aren’t overly enamoured with her outside draw in the 14-horse field. “She has had a couple of trials and I thought she trialled up really well at Taupo,” Ken Kelso said. “She has unfortunately drawn wide. It would have been nice to have drawn an alley, but we are going to run her from there, it is going to be a lovely track. She has got a little bit of gate speed so she will probably go forward.” The Kelsos will line-up another well-bred filly in Little Jeanie. The three-year-old filly is out of Miss Opulence, a half-sister to Group One winners Sir Slick and Puccini. The daughter of Savabeel has placed in her two starts this preparation and Kelso believes the Monovale Holdings-bred and raced filly is a good chance of breaking through for her maiden win this week. “She was very unlucky at Te Aroha where she should have won,” Kelso said. “She had to change ground at a crucial time and stormed home and got beaten by a nose. She is a nice Savabeel filly.” Kelso is also excited about Australian import Jolted making her debut for the stable. “She is a Deep Impact mare that John Sargent had in Sydney. She won at Newcastle,” Kelso said. “He ran her in the AJC Oaks (Group 1, 2400m) where she struck a wet track and it probably came up too soon for her. “She is still quite immature. Pinecliff Racing sent her over here to try and get some black-type down the line. “She probably won’t be competitive over 1400m and won’t be competitive until she gets up to 2000m, but you have got to kick-off somewhere.” Meanwhile, stable star Legarto will make her first public appearance of the summer when she heads to Matamata on Friday for an Open trial to help ready her for a lucrative assignment next month. “She will trial in the Group and Listed trial before the first race on Friday,” Kelso said. “She will then hopefully kick-off on January 14 at Ellerslie in an Open 1400m where the maximum topweight is 60kg. “It is two weeks before the Karaka Million four-year-old ($1 million Elsdon Park Aotearoa Classic, 1600m) and it is to give her a look around Ellerslie as well because she hasn’t been to Ellerslie.” More horse racing news View the full article
  16. Asterix will kick-off his preparation at Te Rapa on Saturday. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) A huge festive period of racing awaits Wexford Stables, and Christmas has come early for Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott with the exciting return of Asterix headlining their team on Saturday at Te Rapa. The son of Tavistock made waves in claiming the Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) in his fourth raceday appearance last March, and despite battling hoof and lameness issues since, has recorded another Open-class victory and a fourth behind Prowess in the Group 1 Bonecrusher Stakes (2050m). Coming off a 266 raceday hiatus since an unplaced run at Group Two level in Sydney, Asterix will resume at Te Rapa following a comfortable 1150m trial performance at Te Awamutu, with Niranjan Parmar taking one-kilogram off his 58kg allotted weight. “We’re just excited to get him back on the racecourse,” Scott said. “He’s coming up very well, his trial was very encouraging and he trialled in a manner that suggests he’s got good confidence and striding out in his movement. “We’ve been pleased with his work leading in, there’s some improvement to come in his fitness and he generally takes a run or two before he starts to hit his straps, so we see no reason that will change.” The re-opening of the Ellerslie Racecourse presents the five-year-old with an opportunity to emulate his Derby-winning performance at the track this campaign, with Scott indicating the ultimate goal to be the Group 2 Auckland Cup (3200m). Asterix also holds elite-level nominations for the Group 1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) and Group 1 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m), ahead of the Cup on March 9. “We’re hoping to aim him for the Auckland Cup, so it’s all about getting some miles into his legs so when the 2000m races come around he’s got a good base,” Scott said. Promising staying filly Sax ‘N’ Silks commenced her career with two runner-up performances this preparation, and Jasmine Fawcett will guide the three-year-old for the third occasion. “She’s been racing well, she’s a filly that is deserving of a win. She does meet a strong field on Saturday, but Jasmine knows her well and she’s fit with a good level of education leading into the race,” Scott said. “There’s no reason why she can’t produce a similar performance to what she has been, she’s a promising staying filly on the way up.” After showing her affinity with the Heavy tracks in her three-year-old season with a victory and two minor placings from three starts, Silver Javelin will resume. “She’s coming up well, she’s had a nice couple of trials to get her fitness up and has drawn well,” Scott said. “The only question mark is the quicker track, as all of her form has been on softer ground but she’s in for a good prep and there should be a good improvement in fitness post-Saturday.” A quiet Wexford presence at Te Rapa will be preceded by 13 representatives at Matamata on Friday, which include four debutant runners. Among the stable’s leading hopes is Smokeshow, the talented gelding likely to benefit from a second-placed performance at Otaki, where he did himself no favours in behind Marotiri Molly, who went back-to-back at Trentham last Saturday. “The winner of his race has gone on and won again, so that’s quite a strong form reference,” Scott said. “It was a good educational trip for him away from home, while he still did a little bit wrong in the run so we’ve put a one-eyed blinker on him and we’ve seen improvement in his work with that gear change. We’re hoping the step-up to 1400m, a home-track advantage, and a kind draw will see him finishing well.” Billy Jacobson will partner the Contributer three-year-old, while Masa Hashizume is booked aboard I’munstoppable, the filly also having her third race-day appearance after two top-four finishes. “Both of her runs have had good merit, last start she got a little wide and still wanted to over-race a bit, so we believe with the benefit of two runs under her belt she’ll have a bit more ringcraft,” Scott said. “She’s another that will benefit from going back left-handed on her home track. We’re hoping she can just find a bit more rhythm, giving her a stronger finish.” Of the four first-starters, Scott indicated three-year-old geldings Trump Card and Alavisto to be ones to follow in future. “We have a promising stayer in Trump Card, he’s another progeny of Ace High who is going well. He’ll be hitting the line there well,” he said. “Alavisto’s trials have been pleasing, he’s going to be better once he gets out over further. Those two are probably the best chances of the first starters.” More horse racing news View the full article
  17. What Cranbourne Races Where Cranbourne Turf Club – 50 Grant St, Cranbourne VIC 3977 When Friday, December 22, 2023 First Race 6:15pm AEDT Visit Dabble A competitive eight-race meeting at Cranbourne Racecourse is scheduled for Friday night, serving as the perfect lead-in to the Christmas weekend. Despite the track coming up a Soft 5 at the time of acceptances, it is expected to firm up to a Good 4 before the first race jumps at 6:15pm local time. The rail is out 7m for the entire circuit. Best Bet at Cranbourne: The Mansman The Mansman finished 1.3 lengths off the smart Elouyou first-up in a Geelong maiden on December 7, and this 1400m affair is no harder than that. Drawn in gate six, Thomas Stockdale will look to find the one-one or settle outside the lead. From there, this son of Almanzor will prove too hard to hold out as he looks to break maiden ranks at start three. Best Bet Race 3 – #7 The Mansman (6) 3yo Colt | T: Phillip Stokes | J: Thomas Stockdale (58kg) Bet with Neds Next Best at Cranbourne: Speranzoso Although he has only a single win to his name, Speranzoso has not finished worse than third in his last five starts. The son of Siyouni went toe-to-toe with Tommy Sandown on November 29 before running into Glentaneous last start on December 6. He is rock-hard fit and should appreciate dropping back to BM64 grade. Jordan Childs will look to roll forward on the five-year-old, and with a couple of cheap sections, it is hard to see how Speranzoso gets run down in the quaddie opener. Next Best Race 5 – #5 Speranzoso (3) 5yo Gelding | T: Clayton Douglas | J: Jordan Childs (58.5kg) Bet with Picklebet Next Best Again at Cranbourne: Margie’s Boy This five-year-old gelding gave his rivals a start and a beating at Werribee on December 10, relishing the rain-affected ground. He needs to bring that form onto firmer going on Friday, but based on how he has come back this campaign, we’re not too concerned. Jye McNeil will have the son of Hvasstan settled towards the rear of the field, but with a genuinely run 1200m affair expected, Margie’s Boy should prove too good once again. 19. Live Drama will contest the Group 2 Manawatu Challenge Stakes (1400m) at Trentham on Saturday. Photo: Race Images South In-form Christchurch mare Live Drama will head across the Cook Strait this week to try and snare some northern spoils. The daughter of Ghibellines will tackle Saturday’s Group 2 Manawatu Challenge Stakes (1400m) at Trentham and trainer Lance Robinson believes she is up to the task. Live Drama will head into the weekend in a fresh state, having spent some time in the paddock following New Zealand Cup Week at Riccarton last month where she was runner-up in the Group 3 Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes (1400m) and fifth in the Listed Stewards’ Stakes (1200m). “She went terrific over Cup week and backed up in the Stewards where I felt she was a bit unlucky,” Robinson said. “She got buffeted the whole race and carried a big weight (57.5kg). I thought her Stewards run had a lot of merit, especially backing up off a 1400m run. “She has had a nice little freshen-up since then and she is very well. This race fits in really well into her program. 1400m at weight-for-age really suits her and hopefully she will run well.” A seasoned traveller, Live Drama will head north later this week and will jump from barrier nine in the 13-horse field. “She will travel up on Thursday morning. She has done a bit of travelling now so that won’t worry her,” Robinson said. “There is a scratching, so she comes into nine which isn’t too bad, she gets back a little bit off pace. She will get a bit of room from there and I don’t see the draw being a problem.” Robinson will continue to chase stakes glory next week at Wingatui on Boxing Day where he will have a two-pronged attack in the Listed Hazlett Stakes (1200m) with Avaquinella and Adannaya. “They are really well, they have come through Cup Week in good order and they are in great shape. It is a good field, but I am sure they will be competitive,” Robinson said. They will be supported on the undercard by Diagon Alley and Forever Babe. “Diagon Alley has been racing well without any luck in her three starts down here. She steps up to a mile and back to a 65 rater, she should be hard to beat,” Robinson said. “Forever Babe went terrific the other day on the synthetic and has improved off that.” While looking forward to tackling stakes targets later in the week, Robinson is excited to head to Ashburton on Wednesday where he will be represented by Aerial Blue and Zappolino. “Aerial Blue is racing really well and should be very competitive,” Robinson said. “Zappolino is up in grade a little bit, he ran third in a 60 rating the other day. Hopefully with the claim it brings him into the race. “They both should run well.” More horse racing news View the full article
  20. Manifique will contest the Group 3 Manawatu Cup (2300m) at Trentham on Saturday. Photo: Peter Rubery (Race Images Palmerston North) Regally-bred mare Manifique will get her chance to continue her family’s stakes legacy when she heads to Trentham on Saturday to tackle the Group 3 Manawatu Cup (2300m). The daughter of Champion New Zealand stallion Savabeel is out of four-time Group One winner Shez Sinsational, and will be looking to emulate the deeds of her half siblings Sinarahma and House of Cartier as black-type performers. Manifique has established a strong record to date, having won four of her 15 starts, including her last two outings, and has earned her first tilt at black-type this weekend. “She has really come of age now. She has never been the biggest Savabeel but she has always had the pedigree and ability, but just needed a bit of time really,” trainer Peter Didham said. “There were some other options (for her first stakes assignment), but we just thought you could get in on the minimum (53kg) in the Manawatu Cup. it is a well-known race and is sponsored by one of my owners and good friend’s Paul Humphries and his partner. “It is a Group race and she seems to go well at Wellington. It ticked a few boxes.” Didham has taken it quietly with the five-year-old mare since her last win at Trentham on December 9 and is confident she will put in a good showing this weekend from barrier eight. “She has been great and had a nice gallop this (Tuesday) morning on her own over 1000m and I was very pleased with her work,” he said. While Didham believes she is a natural two-miler, he will be keeping her to middle distances for the immediate future, with an eye to emulating her dam’s Auckland Cup (3200m) heroics next season. “We just want to get her through this race. She won’t be running two miles this season, that might be a target for next season,” he said. “There are some really nice stakes races now, we are really pleased with the way stakes have come on. We just want to start slowly, get some black print this weekend and go from there.” Didham is also looking forward to lining up exciting stablemate Fashion Icon. The three-year-old daughter of U S Navy Flag has won her last three starts and will be looking to continue that trend this weekend before a well-deserved break. “We don’t know what her level is yet,” Didham said. “She was going to go to the paddock and I just thought this was another nice race before she has 10 days in the paddock. Then we have to decide where we are going with her.” Belluci is another mare that has been in good form for Didham, winning fresh-up at Tauherenikau last month before runner-up at Wanganui. She bypassed Trentham last week with a niggle and Didham is pleased they held off. “The ideal race with her was last week over 1300m, but she had a bruised heel and was a tiny bit off, so we decided to wait a week with her,” Didham said. “From gate one I imagine she will be hitting the line strong.” Moon Money will round out Didham’s quartet of runners. “She has been building nicely,” Didham said. “She won nicely at Taupo and she has had no luck since. There are a couple of good runners in there, but she will be a definite top four chance.” Looking to Otaki on Thursday, Didham will have a trio of representatives, including Glorafilia, Giannis, and debutant Hasbulla. “Glorafilia has been working really well but has a horror draw at 16, but that is Michael McNab’s job to worry about,” Didham said. “Giannis goes okay but needs to improve a little bit in the mile maiden. “I have got a filly called Hasbulla that has won two trials. She has a tricky draw of 12, but we have got to run, she has been in and out and drawn wide a couple of times, so we are going to have a go on raceday.” More horse racing news View the full article
