A proven threat on off tracks, Dr B won the Dec. 2 Go for Wand Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct Racetrack much the same way she did last year, hustling for the early lead and then drawing away on a muddy track that agreed with the winner.View the full article

His chances having been boosted by the way the muddy Aqueduct main track was carrying speed, HOIST THE GOLD (c, 4, Mineshaft–Tacit Approval, by Tapit) proved the speediest of the speeds signed on for Saturday's GII Cigar Mile H. and he and John Velazquez gave nothing else a chance. The 8-1 chance, a latest sixth in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint, wrested command of the race not long after the break and got the opening couple of furlongs in :22.41 and a half in :44.88 while pressed along to his outside by Pipeline (Speightstown). He began to get the better of that battle as the quarter pole loomed and he pinched a break, as none of his rivals was emerging as dangers. Five to six lengths clear entering the final furlong, Velazquez needed only to remain in the saddle to secure the victory, as Senor Buscador, seven wide into the lane from a hopeless position, did good work to round out a Mineshaft exacta. Castle Chaos (Palace Malice) outfinished Three Technique (Mr Speaker) for third. The final time was 1:34.38. Sales history: $47,000 RNA Ylg '20 KEESEP. In a race that didn't really deserve a loser, DORNOCH (c, 2, Good Magic–Puca, by Big Brown), all but a beaten horse in the final furlong of Saturday's GII Remsen S., dug down doggedly and fought back inside of 'TDN Rising Star' Sierra Leone (Gun Runner) to prevail narrowly. The $325,000 Keeneland September yearling, the full-brother to this year's GI Kentucky Derby winner Mage, won the race into the first turn, but expended a fair amount of energy to do so, covering the opening quarter in a demanding :23.09 and the half in :46.97 while hounded by Billal (Street Sense). Ridden along into the stretch, Dornoch had won the pace battle, but would he also win the war? Sierra Leone, a detached last through the middle furlongs, was at a tactical disadvantage given the track profile, but he began to wind up three furlongs out and came six or seven wide into the stretch under a full head of steam. With his early exertions appearing to take a toll, Dornoch drifted in, perhaps brushing with the rail about three-sixteenths out as Sierra Leone kept up with his relentless gallop against the track. His rally carried him into a clear lead with time ticking away, and while it is possible he idled a bit once striking the lead, all credit is due to Dornoch, who refused to lay down and drove through a tight spot to drop his head on the wire first in a finish reminiscent of the 2014 Remsen battle between Honor Code and Cairo Prince. By Mike Love Ohoka Connor ($2.50FF) will be looking to add to his outstanding resume today in the Methven 4 Square Supermarket Green Mile at Mt Harding racecourse. The Sunshine Beach three-year-old has been phenomenal in his short career, winning seven from his eights starts. His most recent win came on Show Day at Addington. Co-trainer Steve Telfer reports the gelding is on song going into today’s assignment. “He seems well. He’s come through that run really good,” said Telfer. Having his first start on the grass surface should not hinder Ohoka Connor as he is well-gaited and comes with a lot of versatility. “He’s a good mover and a good pacer. There should not be any problems. I think he’ll be fine. “There’s a few good seasoned grass trackers in there. So Tim (Williams) will just let him balance up early and see how he feels. He’s a very adaptable horse. He’s got more speed than most people know.” There are several other chances in the event, including last start New Zealand Cup runner One Change ($15.00FF) for Amber Hoffman, the well proven Franco Norton ($5.50FF) for Steve McRae, and Franco Marek ($3.60FF) for Greg Manson also in the market. The focus for Ohoka Connor will then shift to the Garrards New Zealand Derby at Addington on December 10th. After that the Telfers will sit down and plot out the gelding’s summer schedule. “We may look at a few country cups. There’s a few down south that look suitable. We will just pick a path through.” Earlier on the programme Telfer will also line up newcomer to the barn Glengarry Moonlight in race 4. The Auckland Reactor five-year-old has trialed satisfactorily. “He’s got lovely manners at home, and his trial was quite good. It’s just a starting point for him today. Whatever he does today he will benefit from.” In the trotters version of the Green Mile, it looks to be last start Group 1 Dominion Handicap winner Oscar Bonavena’s race to lose, and he go around a very short favourite ($1.40FF). Dangers include Mystic Max ($5.00FF) for Michael Purdon and Confessional ($6.00FF) for Paul Nairn. View the full article

Repole Stable's LIFE TALK (f, 2, Gun Runner–Touchy Feely, by Bernardini) touched odds-on late in wagering, eased just a touch to be off at even-money and made every yard a winning one in Saturday's GII Demoiselle S., the first of four graded events at Aqueduct. With Irad Ortiz, Jr. at the controls, the $335,000 Keeneland September purchase broke alertly and showed the way into the first turn as they stacked up six deep at the first corner. Well in hand through an opening quarter in :24.10 over a strip that had been speed-favoring all day, the half went in :48.65 and Life Talk was still doing it well up front. Tempted S. winner Shimmering Allure (Enticed) was first to try to make a race of it with a four-wide attack leaving the quarter pole, but Life Talk responded to urgings and found extra in the final furlong to take it by about four lengths. Dolomite (Unified) took back out of the early fray to sit a ground-saving trip beneath Manny Franco and found running room in the stretch, but could do no better than third. The 26th stakes winner and 19th graded winner for her boom sire, she is also the 83rd SW and 44th GSW to be produced by a daughter of the sorely missed Bernardini. Stop us if you've heard this a time or a thousand. Horses trained by Chad Brown figure tough in the GI Matriarch S. on closing day of the Bing Crosby Meet at Del Mar. Undisputable though that is–he has, after all, sent out the winner all but once since 2017–Harris Farms homebred Closing Remarks (Vronsky) will look to have the final say Sunday afternoon. The chestnut has yet to strike in three tries at the top level, though she was runner-up in the 2021 Del Mar Oaks while finishing just ahead of one of the Brown representatives she'll be facing here. Closing Remarks is, however, a three-time graded winner over the one-mile distance of the Matriarch and has recorded two of her four victories at the graded level over the Jimmy Durante turf course, including this year's GII Yellow Ribbon S. and GII John C. Mabee S. going slightly farther. Fourth in the GII Rodeo Drive S. over a 10-furlong journey that likely finds her out, she bounced back to defeat Queen Goddess (Empire Maker) and Hamwood Flier (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) in Santa Anita's one-mile GII Goldikiova S. Nov. 5. Juan Hernandez will need to work out a trip from the widest gate, but there is plenty of speed on paper and she should be coming at them late. The Brown-trained Fluffy Socks (Slumber {GB}) was third in that aforementioned Del Mar Oaks, having won the local GIII Jimmy Durante S. at two. The Head of Plains homebred won the GII Distaff Turf Mile at Churchill on seasonal debut May 6, but has since dropped three straight, including a third in the Listed Athenia S. at Aqueduct Oct. 27. Whitebeam (GB) (Caravaggio) is the likely Matriarch favorite after downing stablemate In Italian (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the GI Diana S. going nine furlongs July 15. The Juddmonte homebred has revenge on her mind, having finished an alibi-free fourth to stable companion Gina Romantica (Into Mischief) in the GI First Lady S. at Keeneland Oct. 7. Sunday's co-featured GIII Cecil B. DeMille S. lacks a marquee horse, and its winner could also come from a high draw. Unplaced behind Mission Beach (Curlin) and Wine Me Up (Vino Rosso) in a pair of main-track sprints, Stay Hot (Summer Front) looked like a new horse when graduating first time turf and first time long at Santa Anita Oct. 7 and exits a 10th in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Lord Bullingdon (Lord Nelson) maps to have a sweet run behind what should be a generous tempo as he looks to add to his victory in the Qatar Gold Mile Nov. 4, while D J Stable's Deadpan (Distorted Humor) looks to build on a neck maiden victory over the Keeneland turf course Oct. 28. Mike Luzzi, the Eclipse Award winning apprentice jockey of 1989 and a winner of more than 3,500 races has retired from racing and become the agent for his son Lane, who has been based at Aqueduct since October. “It was his idea,” said Luzzi said of becoming his son's agent. “Reluctantly, I'm going to finish my career. It's tough, I still felt like I had a comeback in me.” Luzzi, a grandson of the trainer Virgil “Buddy” Raines, won 3,539 races in a career that began in 1988 and saw him take more than 250 stakes victories including the 1991 GI Brooklyn Handicap and the 2007 GI Cigar Mile. In recent years, Luzzi's career has been interrupted by injuries, limiting his opportunities, especially on the New York Racing Association circuit, one of which he's been a part of since 1994. Luzzi began his career riding on the Maryland circuit. This year, Luzzi rode just one winner from 18 mounts. His final mount came Sept. 4 at Finger Lakes. “Had a good career, could have done without the injuries,” said Luzzi. “Never rode the [Kentucky] Derby, my biggest regret.” Lane Luzzi began riding in December 2015 and has spent the majority of his career in the Southwest. He moved his tack to New York in October and he has ridden three winners so far at the Aqueduct fall meet. Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony acknowledged the weakness of the lower end of the market as the Tattersalls December Foal Sale concluded on Saturday with a 125,000gns Showcasing (GB) filly leading the way. Almost 30 million gns was spent on foals this week at Tattersalls while Friday saw the most expensive foal sold so far this year–a St Mark's Basilica (Fr) filly–in Europe and North America at 575,000gns. However, the aggregate of 29,842,902gns was down 15% on last year while the average dropped 6% to 44,608gns. The clearance rate was more or less the same, dropping 1% to 75%, while the median dropped 19% to 21,000gns. Mahony commented, “Sustained demand for quality foals has been the feature of the four days of selling at Europe's premier foal sale. In addition to the highest price for a foal in Europe and North America this year there have been a record 29 foals sold for 200,000 guineas or more and a healthy diversity of buyers in all sectors of the market. “The cream of the British and Irish foal crop has attracted buyers in abundance not only from Britain and Ireland but also from throughout Europe and the Gulf region as well as China, Japan and America. The overseas demand has had a significant impact on trade which, although not matching last year's record levels, has remained robust with the exception of the lower end of the market which we must all recognise has been challenging.” He added, “The pinhookers will always be the backbone of any Tattersalls December Foal Sale and as ever they have worked tirelessly, but the contribution from so many significant owners is becoming an increasingly important and regular feature of the sale. When a sale consistently produces racehorses the calibre of 2000 Guineas winner Chaldean and the unbeaten Group 1 and 2 winning two year olds Vandeek and Ghostwriter, it reflects the quality of the stock presented by the consignors and it is clear that their confidence in the sale has been reciprocated by many of the world's most successful racehorse owners. “Another positive to come out of this year's December Foal Sale has been the overwhelmingly favourable response to the break in selling on the Thursday of the sale which allowed buyers valuable extra time to view the Friday and Saturday foals. The change was introduced in response to feedback from vendors and purchasers alike and as well as being well received it is notable that the clearance rates for both Friday and Saturday have improved significantly on last year's record breaking sale. “With a solid Tattersalls December Foal Sale behind us we now look forward to welcoming buyers from every continent in the world to Park Paddocks for another quality renewal of the Tattersalls December Sale which features some spectacular fillies and broodmares, many of them showcased in the elite Sceptre Sessions which take place on Monday and Tuesday.” The Saturday topper was consigned by Daymark Stud and went the way of Ciaran 'Flash' Conroy. The Showcasing filly is a sister to the stakes-placed Fourth Way and will be offered for resale next year. Conroy commented, “Let's hope she is a top lot next year! She is a lovely physical, I like the stallion – he is a very good sire of fillies. She is a really good individual, very balanced, a very good walker. She is a Book 1 individual, and from a young operation so good to see young breeders having a good result.” The sale capped off a solid day's trade for Daymark Stud with four foals selling for 263,000gns. “It is a sigh of relief! It has been incredible, we are very lucky, we are a very small operation,” the stud's Josh Cameron said. “I have done every hand walk with every single foal and some days I think 'Oh maybe I should get someone to help', but I do think it helps the foals in the end. I am not sure my girlfriend has loved living with me over the last eight weeks! “But we got there in the end and thanks to the little syndicate who own the mare Messalina for their support. Two mates bought her out of Archie Watson's yard and sent her to me, and just said, 'See how you get on!' Her first foal by Havana Grey, who we sold here last year for 46,000 guineas, is going to Kevin Philippart De Foy and this year she has produced this amazing Showcasing filly, who has not missed a beat all week. She is a real athlete and for someone like Flash to buy her is unreal.” The post Almost 30 Million Guineas Spent On Foals At Tatts But Figures Take A Dip appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Chilly on the board at 13-1 from a morning line of 6-1, P and G Stable's EL CAPI (c, 2, Maclean's Music–Nightlife Baby, by Flatter) ran them off their feet in Saturday's second race at Aqueduct to open his account in impressive fashion at first asking. Bustled away from the inside gate by Jose Gomez, the bay was in front after 100 yards and had already opened an imposing advantage through a quarter in :22.03. Still going great guns after a half-mile in a slick :44.73, El Capi was under a vigorous hand ride through the final furlong and stopped the timer in 1:21.99 over a muddy main track. Hop Sing (Curlin), the well-backed 8-5 favorite, was off slowly, was deftly angled to the inside by Luis Saez on the turn and just managed to outfinish $1-million KEESEP graduate Conquest Warrior (City of Light), who was last into stride, took an overland route on the turn and stayed on gamely to be third at 10-1. Having most recently sold for $220,000 at the OBS March Sale, El Capi had made three previous trips through a sales ring. A $35,000 Keeneland November weanling, he fetched the identical amount at last year's Fasig-Tipton February sale and made $75,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale last October. Ronald “Ronnie” C. Cartwright, a Maryland-based trainer who conditioned multiple graded-stakes winners throughout his career, passed away Nov. 11 at the age of 93. A steeplechase jockey who then trained from the late 1960's through 2005, Cartwright won almost 700 races and his horses earned more than $13 million. His graded-stakes winners included Mz. Zill Bear (Salutely), Castelets (King's Bishop), Miss Slewpy (Slewpy), Palliser Bay (Frosty the Snowman) and Mymet (Mehmet). “I've been in this for 60 years and will miss it,” Cartwright said soon after he retired in 2005. “It has been a great run. I've had a really good life and enjoyed this very much. I had a lot of nice horses and had a good time.” “Ronnie was a horsemen's horseman–very old school,” said Maryland-based breeder/owner Jay Williamson. “He did it the right way, and he had the right owners. When horses need time off, they got time off. That's tough to do in today's environment. He was an all-around good person. Everybody liked Ronnie.” A Celebration of Life for Cartwright will be held at Laurel Park on the first floor of the clubhouse Dec. 19 at 11:30 a.m. The post Longtime Maryland Trainer Ronald Cartwright Dies At 93 appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. The bloodstock world is united in grief with the Marnane family following the death of Theresa Marnane on Saturday at the age of 61. An immensely popular member of the racing and breeding community, Marnane, along with her husband Con and daughters Amy and Olivia, was widely successful in many sectors of the business. The family's Bansha House Stables in Tipperary has long been successful at the breeze-up sales, with the top-class winners Rio De La Plata, Fleeting Spirit (Ire) and Amadeus Wolf (Ire) being among their many graduates. They are also successful owners and breeders. Theresa Marnane's yellow-and-black silks have been carried by a number of good horses, including the G1 Racing Post Trophy winner Palace Episode and most recently the G3 Marble Hill S. winner Givemethebeatboys (Ire). She was the leading owner of two-year-olds in France on a number of occasions, with the victories invariably coming with inexpensively bought youngsters selected by Con and Amy Marnane. It was the 2017 G3 Albany S. winner Different League (Fr) who sparked perhaps the most memorable celebrations when beating subsequent multiple Group 1 winner Alpha Centauri (Ire) at Royal Ascot. Bought as a foal for €8,000, the daughter of Dabirsim (Fr) won her first three starts for the Marnanes and was then placed in both the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Cheveley Park S before being sold for 1.5 million gns to Coolmore and Peter Brant. Different League's Royal Ascot victory came four years after Theresa, a solicitor by trade, had undergone cancer treatment for the first time, and her success on racing's biggest stage was enjoyed wildly, both on the day and with a huge party at the family's Tipperary home later that summer. The couple celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in May, and they were rarely seen apart: Theresa's warm and ever-smiling presence perfectly complementing her husband's natural exuberance. “I met Theresa 43 years ago at Danny O'Connell's, when she was riding out there,” said Con Marnane on Saturday. “We've just been overwhelmed by the support of everyone in the racing and breeding industry, the breeze-up consignors, the trainers, owners and jockeys. She was a very special person to so many people. Everyone loved her.” He added, “There will be a celebration of Theresa's life at Bansha House on Monday after mass in our local church at 11am. We would love for as many of her friends to be there as possible and for those who can't we will make details available to follow the service online.” The loss of Theresa Marnane will be mourned by her many friends in racing, and especially by Con, Amy, Olivia and her extended family, to whom we offer our sincere condolences. With the team at Juddmonte still “floating on air” after a pair of wins on Breeders' Cup Saturday, the blue-blooded Mullion (c, 3, Into Mischief–Brooch, by Empire Maker) added to a banner weekend for the international operation with a 'TDN Rising Star' performance at Churchill Downs Nov. 5. Sidelined for more than 14 months following a strong debut second–beaten just a nose–going six furlongs at Ellis Park in late August of his 2-year-old season, the full-brother to promoted GI Kentucky Derby winner and Juddmonte stallion Mandaloun proved well worth the wait with a jaw-dropping, 10-length maiden victory for trainer Brad Cox at second asking beneath the Twin Spires. With nine breezes on the worktab for his comebacker, Mullion was favored at 3-5 while facing six rivals with first-time Lasix going a one-turn mile. He was bumped slightly from both sides at the start after exiting from post three. Unfazed by the minimal contact, he was keen in the early stages while hard held in second. Mullion tugged his way to the front as the half went up in :46.09 and traveled beautifully leaving the quarter pole. He put on a show from there down the stretch beneath a motionless Florent Geroux and stopped the timer in 1:34.69. He earned a 101 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort. “As much time, patience and effort as we put into Mullion, we were expecting a big performance, but to do what he did was beyond our expectations off that kind of a layoff,” Juddmonte USA General Manager Garrett O'Rourke said. “It shows the talent that the horse has and hopefully he keeps it together now and can be a big player next year. He ran a 4 on the Ragozin Sheets, which is just off the charts.” O'Rourke continued, “He injured himself after his first start–he had a soft-tissue injury, then he had a few other little issues– and we gave him all the time he needed. It was always something just holding him back after that–upper respiratory infection, sore shin, foot abscess, etc. I always felt like the talent was there and all the extra time was only going to be to his benefit. We knew how nice he was. He's a gorgeous-looking horse with the pedigree to match and Brad (Cox) had a very high opinion of him, even as a 2-year-old.” Mullion got back to business since earning his diploma with a four-furlong breeze in :48.80 (8/40) at Churchill Downs Nov. 26. He will winter at Fair Grounds, O'Rourke reports. “All of the targets for him will be next year,” O'Rourke said. “I just felt like we didn't need to be in a rush with him. Brad (Cox) agreed and he'll try and go through his conditions down at Fair Grounds, then we'll look about jumping him up in mid-to-late spring. He definitely looks like he could hopefully be a (Grade I) Carter-Met Mile type of horse.” Mullion was produced by the Empire Maker mare Brooch, a Juddmonte homebred and two-time group winner in Ireland. In addition to Mullion's aforementioned full-brother and fellow 'Rising Star' Mandaloun, the Into Mischief x Empire Maker cross is also responsible for Laurel River, who carried Juddmonte's famed green-and-pink silks to a win in the 2022 GII Pat O'Brien S. at Del Mar; and GSW & MGISP Occult.
