  1. What Eagle Farm Races Where Eagle Farm Racecourse – 230 Lancaster Rd, Ascot, QLD 4007 When Saturday, October 21, 2023 First Race 11:43am AEST Visit Dabble The Brisbane Racing Club will host a massive 10-race card at Eagle Farm Racecourse this Saturday afternoon. The track is rated a Good 4, and with no rain forecast for Friday and Saturday, we expect to be racing on a perfect surface for the whole meeting. The rail will be in the +3m position for the entire circuit, with the opening race set to jump at 11:43am AEST. Best Bet at Eagle Farm: Shibli Shibli from the Chris Waller yard will be seeking a hat-trick of wins when he competes in the St Rita’s Cup over 1600m, where he will be the only last-start winner in the field. Last time out, at this track and trip, this son of Muhaarar came from last to run over the top of his rivals. Now that this six-year-old gelding will be having his fourth run of the preparation, he should be at peak fitness. From barrier two, James Orman should be able to settle a little closer to the speed, and if he finds clear air on the home turn, Shibli should be winning again. Best Bet Race 6 – #4 Shibli (2) 6yo Gelding | T: Chris Waller | J: James Orman (56kg) +180 with Betfair Next Best at Eagle Farm: Lost In Transit After back-to-back wins at the Sunshine Coast to kick off his campaign, the Stuart Kendrick-trained Lost In Transit was narrowly defeated last start by Hold On Honey in a 1000m No Metro Wins Handicap. This four-year-old gelding has only missed the placings once from his eight career starts, and he is unbeaten over 1200m. This son of Spieth was very strong through the line at his most recent start, so the step up to 1200m should be ideal. From barrier 10, Ryan Maloney should be able to cross the field with the likely leader, Serigala, who is drawn next door. If he can settle outside the leader and kick at the top of the home straight, Lost In Transit should prove very hard to run down. Next Best Race 10 – #4 Lost In Transit (10) 4yo Gelding | T: Stuart Kendrick | J: Ryan Maloney (58.5kg) +210 with Boombet Best Value at Eagle Farm: Aton Of Delight The Glen Thornton-trained Aton Of Delight was very good two starts back when narrowly beaten by Regal Pom in a Benchmark 70 Handicap while carrying 60kg. At his most recent start, this son of I Am Invincible had to go back from his wide barrier and never got into clear air in the home straight, so we are forgiving him for that. On Saturday, this four-year-old gelding will lock horns with Regal Pom again; however, he will get a 5kg weight swing in his favour. From barrier one, Damien Thornton should be able to settle Aton Of Delight in the box seat and give him all the favours in the running. 2. What Morphettville Races Where Morphettville Racecourse – 79 Morphett Rd., Morphettville, SA 5043 When Saturday, October 21, 2023 First Race 11:57am ACDT Visit Dabble The course proper at Morphettville is the destination for metropolitan racing in South Australia on Saturday with 10 races carded. With perfect spring conditions forecast in the lead-up, we anticipate the current Good 4 rating will get an upgrade to a Good 3 at some point on Saturday. The rail comes out 3m from the 1200m to the winning post and then sits true for the remainder. The action from Morphettville is set to get underway at 11:57am ACDT. Best Bet at Morphettville: Splash Back The way the Andrew Bobbin-trained Splash Back won at Warrnambool on October 6 suggested she was a horse worth following. The four-year-old mare gave her rivals a start and a beating when coming from near last to win by just under a length in impressive style. Her turn of foot inside the final 150m was top-tier for BM58 level, and the step up to an Adelaide BM68 looks ideal. With speed drawn wide, she will settle towards the rear once again. If the breaks come her way, Splash Back should be bringing up a third win at start four. Best Bet Race 6 – #7 Splash Back (3) 4yo Mare | T: Andrew Bobbin | J: Todd Pannell (57kg) +190 with PendleburyBet Next Best at Morphettville: Aviatress Aviatress had to overcome some difficulties on her debut run, but she powered away to score by 1.5 lengths. She struggled to find clear air until the 200m mark, but from there she went through the gears nicely and pounced on the leader in impressive fashion. She draws barrier 10 on Saturday and will most likely be at the rear of the field upon turning. Aviatress has a strong turn of foot, and with race experience under her belt, she can go on with the job at start two. Next Best Race 9 – #13 Aviatress (10) 3yo Filly | T: Richard & Chantelle Jolly | J: Jake Toeroek (55.5kg) +230 with Betfair Best Value at Morphettville: Vino Decasa Nostra Vino Decasa Nostra has been in career-best form of late and comes into this fresh off a win at the Murray Bridge 2000m, where he was forced to chase a strong speed from the rear of the field. He strikes a similar race on the weekend, with a solid tempo expected throughout. If Vino Decasa Nostra can gain a tow into the race, he should prove too hard to hold out. Best Value Race 4 – #7 Vino Decasa Nostra (10) 5yo Gelding | T: Jarrod Lynch | J: Sophie Logan (56kg) +900 with Dabble Saturday quaddie tips for Morphettville Morphettville quadrella selections Saturday, October 21, 2023 3-5-6-8-9 2-4-9-12 1-2-13 1-2-3-4 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip More horse racing tips View the full article

Chain Of Lightning beat home Palaisipan and Pride Of Jenni to give Luke Nolen and Peter Moody another win as a pairing in the Tristarc Stakes, after Typhoon Tracy’s win in 2009. Chain Of Lightning took her record to six wins from seven starts, showing that this mare is well above average and this could be the first of many Group race victory for classy mare. 2021: Colette makes emphatic Group 1 statement Having had a delayed start to her spring, Godolphin’s Colette was a class above her rivals in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes. Despite settling at the rear of the field under Damian Lane, once the former Golden Eagle winner was asked to quicken, Colette put her rivals to the sword to record yet another Stakes win in her already gliterring career. Colette would go on to put a length on Steinem and Aidensfield in soft fashion late on. 2020: Melham guides Madam Rouge to Group 2 success The Chris Waller-trained Madam Rouge bounced back to form when saluting in the Tristarc Stakes under Ben Melham. Having already ridden a double on the day, Melham was full of confidence and that showed when the Group 1 winning hoop stuck to the rails as his rivals fanned into the home straight at Caulfield. Following a farcically slow run race, it was always going to come down to who could sprint the best and in a bunched finish across the line, it was Madam Rouge who held off the fast-finishing She Shoo Fly in second, with the leader Felicia back in third. 2019: Savatiano reigns supreme Class prevailed in the 2019 Tristarc Stakes as the James Cummings-trained Savatiano made light of a wide barrier. Having drawn the widest barrier (14), Craig Williams had the mare settled outside the leader with relative ease. In What was a moderately run affair, the race was always going to suit those up on speed and once the heat went on, Savatiano put her rivals to the sword with ease. 4. Celebrating 40 Years of the Breeders' Cup Can you imagine being a horse racing-crazy kid with a ringside seat to the creation of the Breeders' Cup? Mark Taylor can, because he was. Fast forward more than four decades and now he is president and CEO of the Central Kentucky farm that is believed to have raised and/or sold more Breeders' Cup winners than any other. There's also the matter of having stood the Breeders' Cup winner who currently holds the record for siring the most Breeders' Cup winners in turn. And, oh yes, there's also Knicks Go, another Breeders' Cup winner, in the farm's stud barn right now, as well as a few in the fields. Yes, surely Taylor can be excused if his reverence for the Breeders' Cup might be even greater than usual. “Listen, the [Kentucky] Derby is amazing, but if you're in this industry, the Breeders' Cup is the real deal,” said Taylor. “Every division: turf, dirt, 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds, older horses, all coming together and laying it all on the line.” Taylor's father was the legendary farm manager Joe Taylor, whose fortunes coincided with that of Gainesway. Many will remember Gainesway under John Gaines and the elder Taylor together. At one point the farm on Paris Pike stood 40 stallions and bred over 2,000 mares a year. This was all the more remarkable considering it was in the days when stallion books were much smaller and reproductive work wasn't quite so advanced, often necessitating multiple covers per mare. In addition to owning one of the most successful stallion stations in our sport's history, Gaines is also credited with the conception of the Breeders' Cup. Joe Taylor was at his side for all of it. Although they were farm owner and employee, the two men were far closer than that, said Mark Taylor. “Mr. Gaines and my dad were like brothers in a lot of ways,” he said. “Mr. Gaines was a brilliant business guy and the visionary. My dad was the diplomat and the horseman. My dad was really gratified for Mr. Gaines when he got it all together and got the Breeders' Cup done. What an amazing thing.” Knicks Go at Taylor Made | Sarah Andrew Taylor said he was the youngest of eight kids and a young teenager when Gaines hatched the idea behind the Breeders' Cup. “I feel like I got a front-row seat,” said Taylor. “I was the last kid still in the house in those years where the Breeders' Cup was really coming to fruition. I could hear my dad in there on the phone with Mr. Gaines and the two of them brainstorming. “It was like political warfare, getting everyone on board. For Mr. Gaines to try to bring this concept to fruition he deserves some sort of Nobel Peace Prize. I don't know how he got it done.” All these years later, Taylor still marvels at the unobstructed view he received. “It's really amazing. I feel like of all the thousands and thousands of people in this industry, I got to see this and I was just a 13- or 14-year-old kid. I had a really unique view of this thing coming together. I was really into horse racing. I'd be waiting for the Blood-Horse or Thoroughbred Record every week, and the race results in the Herald-Leader every day. The TDN wasn't around yet. “It was kind of cool watching it all come together. I love the Breeders' Cup. It's one of my favorite days of the year. Watching what it's become is really special. “I'll never forget that first Breeders' Cup Classic. That wild stretch drive. I think it was more than Mr. Gaines could have dreamt up the way it came together. “What a privilege to see it all come together.” Sarah Andrew After witnessing something so special, no wonder Taylor–along with his older brothers–would later found Taylor Made Farm, today a diverse operation which has conquered the worlds of boarding, selling, stallions, and more. No fewer than 20 individual Breeders' Cup winners have been raised or sold by Taylor Made. Lest one think those eventual winners simply passed through sales barns, a full 11 of those 20 spent their formative years cavorting through Taylor Made pastures. Among those raised on Taylor Made's land were Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and leading sire Unbridled's Song. The latter also spent his entire stud career at Taylor Made and would sire six individual Breeders' Cup winners. Long before he sired a foal, Unbridled's Song was tied to Taylor Made. “It's a long story,” said Taylor. “We had Unbridled's Song here on the farm when he was a weanling owned by Mandysland Farm. They were dispersing; ultimately he was bought by someone else and they took him to Saratoga where he sold as a yearling, but was sent back to Taylor Made for some R&R. Ernie Pargallo's Paraneck Stable and Buzz Chace bought him. “Back then, Taylor Made sold 2-year-olds in training. We obviously didn't have a training center, so we were the marketing arm. I never will forget when Unbridled's Song breezed, he was just this big, gray monster. He breezed so effortlessly. As he crossed the line, the announcer said, 'He went so fast the infield trees swayed.'” Sarah Andrew Unbridled's Song brought $1.4 million in 1995 at the Barretts March sale. At the time, it was a world record for a 2-year-old in training. However, there was a hitch. A chip was found in the colt's hind ankle and the buyer, according to Taylor, tried to negotiate a reduced price. “We had an anxiety attack,” said Taylor. “Here we'd spent all this money going to California–we'd flown all the way to Barretts to sell him–and our big horse was being turned back. Ernie Paragallo said, 'Don't worry about it. We're going to win the Breeders' Cup with him.' The rest is history.” Sure enough, Unbridled's Song did just that. About seven months later, he captured the GI Juvenile in a spectacular stretch duel with Hennessy. “That was amazing. Of course, he came here [after his racing career], led the general sires list, and was a tremendous sire for us,” said Taylor. “He really put our stallion operation on the map. He had so much speed for a big horse and could carry it two turns. He also had such a sweet disposition, not a mean bone in his body. “And he died with that chip in his hind ankle!” Knicks Go with Ernesto Martinez | Sarah Andrew Unbridled's Song passed away in 2013 at the age of 20. Another Breeders' Cup winner, 2021 Classic winner and 2020 Dirt Mile winner Knicks Go, is currently in the stallion barn. “Several farms were after him, so the fact that we were able to get the horse was very exciting,” said Travis White, director of sales at Taylor Made. “It's not often you get a horse like that. For us he checked a lot of boxes. We feel so fortunate and excited to have him. “The Breeders' Cup is the Super Bowl of our sport. Anytime you can get a horse of that caliber, the best of the best, proven on the world's biggest stage, it's a great addition to a stallion roster. You're going to attract the top breeders in the world.” Knicks Go was just history's sixth horse to find the winner's circle in two different Breeders' Cup races, but there was almost a third Breeders' Cup win on his CV. It's often lost among the Eclipse championships and two championship day wins, but Knicks Go also finished runner-up as a 2-year-old in the 2018 Juvenile behind eventual champion Game Winner. “I think a lot of people forget he was a Grade I winner at two and that he won or placed in three different Breeders' Cup races,” said White. “It is extremely rare for a horse to be as precocious as he was and then come back and win two different Breeders' Cup races as an older horse. Most horses have a niche–they can't go two turns, can't come from off the pace, have to have things go their own way–but he was able to do it all. Hats off to Brad Cox and his crew for doing such a great job with him.” White said it's an honor to have Knicks Go in the stallion barn at Taylor Made. “Anytime you have a horse with his accomplishments and accolades, it means the world.” Knicks Go isn't the only Breeders' Cup winner currently on the farm. The most high-profile Breeders' Cup-winning mare at Taylor Made at the moment is undoubtedly Blue Prize (Arg), winner of the 2019 Distaff and a $5-million purchase out of Fasig-Tipton by OXO Equine. However, it is Miss Macy Sue who holds pride of place. Miss Macy Sue at Taylor Made last month | Sarah Andrew Miss Macy Sue, a graded winner who was third in the 2007 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, had five foals to race. Four were stakes winners, including GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Liam's Map (who is by Taylor Made's Unbridled's Song) and Not This Time, who was runner-up by a neck in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and is now king of the stallion barn at Taylor Made. “She is pensioned and still lives here,” said Taylor. “She is the grand dame of Taylor Made. Almost two Breeders' Cup winners. What an achievement. Stallions get to produce hundreds and hundreds of foals every year, but mares get one chance a year for maybe 10 or 15 years. For her to have that kind of strike rate in the Breeders' Cup is just incredible.” Taylor Made has had a lot of significant moments in the Breeders' Cup, but there was one that might have been a little extra special. In the 2004 edition at Lone Star Park, two mares grazing in Taylor Made paddocks both had Breeders' Cup winners. Silken Cat and Goulash produced Sprint winner Speightstown and Distaff winner Ashado, respectively. Now the mares are buried next to each other at Taylor Made. Silken Cat's grave at Taylor Made | Sarah Andrew “Both were bred by Aaron and Marie Jones, long-time customers. That day was incredible,” remembered Taylor. “We raised them both here and they were on opposite ends of the spectrum price-wise. Speightstown was a $2-million Keeneland July yearling and Ashado brought $170,000 at Keeneland September. And yet they both turned into champions. Later we resold Ashado for a then world-record $9 million.” It's probably safe to say Taylor Made's story in the Breeders' Cup is far from over. Whether future chapters will be written from the mare side or the sales division or even by horses standing in the stallion barn remains to be seen, but the touch of Taylor Made will likely continue to be felt alongside the Breeders' Cup. What could be more fitting for a kid with a front-row seat to the birth of racing's championship days? 7. Promising colt Monday Melody (Snitzel) has pleased trainers Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott in his build-up to the stiffest challenge of his brief career at Te Rapa on Saturday. The son of Snitzel will front up against a small but select line-up in the Gr.2 James & Annie Sarten Memorial (1400m) with Joe Doyle booked to continue his association with the three-year-old. “It’s certainly a step up for him, but we think he has continued to improve and he obviously has to as the competition gets harder and harder,” Scott said. “We are pleased with the way he has continued to handle the preparation, he’s sound and has galloped in a manner that suggests he will race well.” Monday Melody is currently the fourth favourite at $10 for next month’s Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) with a start at Riccarton resting on the outcome of Saturday’s event. “It will be performance-based, and we dearly hope he will put in one to warrant making the trip,” Scott said. “Hopefully, he runs the race out in a manner that suggests he can run a strong mile.” Monday Melody was a gallant runner-up on debut at Avondale last month and then broke his maiden at Te Rapa with a defeat of the stakes placed filly Glamour Tycoon (Written Tycoon) and has proved an easy customer to manage. “He has a good level of focus and he’s sound and happy, it certainly hasn’t been a bother with him still being a colt,” Scott said. He was a A$600,000 purchase at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and his pedigree boasts strong New Zealand ties with his second dam the Gr.2 Counties Cup (2200m) winner Jeu De Cartes (NZ) (Stravinsky). His third dam is the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) and Gr.1 Brisbane Cup (3200m) winner Prized Gem (NZ) (Prized) and she produced Nom Du Jeu, successful in the Gr.1 Australian Derby (2400m), Monday Melody, who carries the colours of gifted stablemate Dragon Leap (Pierro), isn’t the only 2000 Guineas contender the stable has with Almanzor’s son and last-start winner Geriatrix also in the mix at $12 in the pre-post market. “He’s a sound colt with a good mind and constitution. He might lack a little bit of ringcraft, but he has got a good turn of foot,” Scott said. “He will run in a Rating 65 mile at Pukekohe and he’s the same, if the performance is there then we’ll certainly consider taking him down to Christchurch.” Wexford will also have two other strong chances at Te Rapa on Saturday with Fabulous Gal (NZ) (Fabulous) in the Waikato Draught Handicap (1400m) and Strathtay (NZ) (Preferment) in the Protek Coatings Mile (1600m). “Fabulous Gal ran well at Taupo and the horse that beat her (Drum Major) has since won again,” Scott said. “She is a handy mare and we think she will run really well second-up from a good gate (five).” Jasmine Fawcett will partner Fabulous Gal and Doyle will again be aboard the progressive Preferment four-year-old Strathtay, who is unbeaten in his last two appearances over Saturday’s course and distance. “He’s won his last two and is stepping up in class and runs into quicker ground,” Scott said. “There’s a couple of question marks there, but he is going really well and should give another strong account of himself.” View the full article
  8. The progeny of Justify have shone this week in the tangerine silks of Te Akau Racing, and the good form continued with three-year-old Rule of Law (NZ) producing his maiden victory at Tauranga on Wednesday. A winner of the US Triple Crown, Justify’s three-year-old crop includes Star of Justice who scored an impressive victory in Monday’s rescheduled Gr.3 Barneswood Farm Stakes (1400m) at Ashburton, and looks a key hope in the Gr.1 Barneswood Farm 1000 Guineas (1600m) for the Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson stable. Back in the North, Rule of Law continued the stallion’s good form in the Ultimate Mazda Maiden 3YO (1400m), jumping confidently away in just his second race-day start and worked forward from a wide draw (13) in a hotly-contested lead, eventually taking over for Opie Bosson. Bosson controlled a comfortable tempo through the middle stages and when asked, Rule of Law responded with a decent kick at the top of the straight to gain a two-length break on the field. His early advantage proved too tough for closing rivals Still Bangon (NZ) (Satono Aladdin) and Scottie’s Legacy (Almanzor, the gelding holding a strong closing gallop to score by a length. “It was a really good performance and he looks to be a nice staying horse,” Walker said. “He’ll only continue to improve as he has more experience, but I liked the way he quickened up in front to establish a break and kept up a very strong gallop. “I like the way he relaxed as well, because he had to do it at both ends of the races, so definitely a horse with a future over ground. “One thing I think we’ve learnt about these horses by Justify is that they seem to improve lengths with blinkers on.” The experienced eye of Bosson also saw staying potential in the three-year-old, who was purchased by David Ellis CNZM at the 2022 Karaka Yearling Sales out of The Oaks Stud’s Book 1 draft. “He’s a nice relaxed type, jumped well last time and did the same again. I think the further the distance, the better,” Bosson said. “He’s a horse with a nice action and he’s a promising staying prospect.” View the full article
  9. The rescheduling of the Gr.3 Sweynesse Stakes (1200m) to Te Rapa on Saturday has worked in favour of Johny Johny (NZ) (Charm Spirit) on two fronts. Originally to have been contested at Rotorua last weekend, that meeting was abandoned after four races due to the unsafe nature of the track and subsequently added to the card at the Hamilton fixture. The extra week has benefitted the Tim and Margaret Carter-trained Johny Johny, who is also a proven sprinting force at Te Rapa. “We’ve got no complaints at all, the only complaint we had was that he had missed a few days work preparing for Rotorua but we’ve worked around that,” Margaret Carter said. “It was just a minor issue and he’s freshened up a lot after missing the original race. He had two rest days and then they didn’t run at Rotorua so he had three days off. “He was awfully fresh on Monday, and still is, but that’s alright as he goes well fresh.” The son of Charm Spirit proved that point in emphatic fashion when he resumed last month over Saturday’s course and distance and accounted for subsequent winner Sacred Satono (NZ) (Satono Aladdin) and Group winner Bonny Lass (NZ) (Super Easy) over 1200m. “Touch wood, he’s never let us down and we’re sure he’ll race honestly again,” Carter said. Johny Johny will be ridden by Jim Chung, who can’t bring his 3kg claim into play in the Sweynesse but connections have stuck with the apprentice who has partnered the six-year-old to his last two victories. Future plans for the gelding have yet to be confirmed, but a continuation of his form is likely may see the bar raised with the Gr.1 Railway Stakes (1200m) on the radar. “We’ll get this race done and then look and see what’s ahead, we’ll probably look at it but we’ll get this one out of the way first and see how he is,” Carter said. His speed and class aside, Johny Johny is also proven on all types of footing with winning form on heavy going and on top of the ground. “He’s quite versatile and showed us he can run on most tracks, he doesn’t seem to mind anything and he’s won at Ellerslie on a Good 3 before,” Carter said. The stable is in good form and was buoyed by the maiden success of Elton Rocks (NZ) (Proisir) at Tauranga on Wednesday. “He deserved that the little chap, we were very proud of him,” Carter said. The son of Proisir had put the writing on the wall at his previous appearance at the end of last month at Te Rapa where he had finished runner-up. View the full article

Multiple Group 1 winner Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) will run in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot on QIPCO British Champions Day, owner Blue Diamond Stud announced via X (Twitter) on Wednesday evening. “Confirmed: Nashwa will run in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on Saturday,” Imad Al Sagar's operation tweeted. Al Sagar's homebred won both the G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Nassau S. as a 3-year-old for John and Thady Gosden. She added her third Group 1 in the Falmouth S. this July, and has three consecutive placings at the highest level later in the campaign. Third defending her title in the Nassau in August, she was a good second in the International S. at York later that month, and was most recently third in the Irish Champion S. in Ireland in September. The one-mile QEII was not the only race on Champions Day under consideration for the regular mount of Hollie Doyle. The 10-furlong G1 QIPCO Champion S. was also a potential target until Wednesday evening's announcement. Doyle said earlier this week, “I think she's very versatile and very effective whatever the ground and whatever the trip. “You need horses like her, she's carried me now for the past two years and she always produces the goods.” The post QEII The Pick For Nashwa On Saturday appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. George Isaacs, general manager of Ocala's Bridlewood Farm, has been reelected as the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association (FTBOA) president, according to a release put out by the organization Wednesday. Following the annual member meeting, the FTBOA held a board meeting and also named Rustlewood Farm's George Russell the first vice president, Summerfield's Francis Vanlangendonck the second vice president, Ocala Stud's Joseph M. O'Farrell as treasurer, and Nick de Meric, who operates de Meric Stables and Sales, as secretary. “I have been fortunate to lead FTBOA at a time of legislative success that has been decades in the making, and at a time of innovation for the media division,” said Isaacs, who has served six terms on the FTBOA board with intermissions as required by bylaws. “I am proud of these accomplishments and thrilled the board has elected me again to continue my service as president for the Association and its members.” Isaacs also chairs the Equine Studies Program at the College of Central Florida and the FTBOA Ocala Downtown Thoroughbred Walk of Fame committee, serves on the FTBOA Farmland Preservation Work Group, and serves on other boards. 17. Veteran jockey Corey Lanerie posted the 5,000th victory of his riding career Wednesday at Keeneland, coming with a patented move up the fence to guide the Chris Hartman-trained I Feel The Need (Keen Ice) in race three. He is the 38th jockey in history and is the 12th winningest among active riders behind the ageless Perry Ouzts. “It's beautiful,” he said. “I have been waiting a long time and it seems like I got right on it and I could never get over the hump, but today we got over the hump and hopefully we keep rolling.” Louisiana-born Lanerie, who will celebrate his 49th birthday Nov. 13, began riding professionally in 1991, posting his first career victory at Evangeline Downs that April. His initial win at the graded level came aboard Desert Air in the GIII Razorback H. at Oaklawn Park in 1998. His earned the first Grade I of his career in the 2009 Ashland S. with Hooh Why and has since recorded top-level victories while partnering the likes of Molly Morgan, Brody's Cause, Weep No More, Hog Creek Hustle and Bell's the One. Lanerie took time to recognize those who have helped him along the way in this landmark achievement. “Mostly my family because in this business you have a lot of ups and downs,” he said. “Family sticking by you is key because when we lose 80% of the time, we're doing really good. I just thank family and a lot of the trainers that stuck with me. One of my first ones were Mike Stidham and Steve Asmussen. They gave me a chance to ride first call for both of them. I got to get on better horses, and it made me a much better rider. There's so many of them to thank. I couldn't possibly do it right here.” The post Lanerie Celebrates 5000th Career Win appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 22. Edited Press Release The Racing Medication & Testing Consortium (RMTC) today announced the funding of a three-year post-doctoral fellowship research project “Micro RNAs as Sensitive Biomarkers for Detection of Drug Administration in Horses.” This promising project was submitted by Dr. Camilo Jaramillo- Morales with the Pharmacology and Toxicology Graduate group at the University of California, Davis. Assessment of RNA or protein biomarkers offers an alternative, and potentially more sensitive approach to the detection of prohibited substances administered to racehorses. The overall goal of the current study is to develop an alternate approach, using microRNA (miRNA) biomarkers, for the detection and regulation of banned substances in racehorses. “The RMTC is proud to support the professional development of young scientists who are the future of our drug testing and research programs”, said Alex Waldrop, RMTC Board Chair. “It is particularly rewarding to be able to fund Dr. Jaramillo-Morales as he will be under the supervision and tutelage of Dr. Heather Knych whose own post-doctoral training program was funded by the RMTC over 10 years ago.” “The recruitment and retention of motivated, highly trained personnel and support of competitive research programs are critical to anti-doping, medication control, and racing safety programs”, said Dr. Michael Hardy, Executive Director. “The racing industry has a responsibility to solicit qualified individuals, support their advanced training, provide incentives for relevant research programs, and foster productivity in research laboratories.” At its Oct.. 2 meeting, the RMTC's Board of Directors also approved the research application “Untargeted Detection of Doping Agents in Equine Plasma”, submitted by Dr. Fuyu Guan with the Department of Clinical Studies–New Bolton Center School of Veterinary Medicine University of Pennsylvania. Current analytical methods used for medication control in horse racing focus detection of drugs based on lists of prohibited substances established by the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI), the International Federation of Horse Racing Authorities (IFHA), and most recently, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA). This proposal seeks to address the challenges associated with detecting untargeted (“unknown”) substances with doping potential which may remain unpublished on these targeted lists or testing menus. Dr. Guan has recently developed a novel algorithm-based methodology, aided by artificial intelligence, for untargeted detection of unknown doping agents in equine plasma. This project will expand on recently published research by Dr. Guan and his team to validate this methodology with the goal being to develop a comprehensive untargeted drug detection methodology that can be used for routine screening analysis of postrace plasma for new doping agents and unknown drugs. “More in-depth analysis of data generated from samples using current analytical detection technologies is an untapped opportunity”, said Dr. Rick Arthur, member of RMTC's Scientific Advisory Committee. “This project mines that data and expands beyond targeted testing.” The post RMTC To Fund Post-Doctoral Fellowship and Research Proposal appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
