  2. Matcha Latte ridden by Ahsley Morgan winning the Provincial-Midway Championships Final. Photo: Bradleyphotos.com.au A long-range plan for Matcha Latte to take out the Provincial-Midway Championships Final has paid off for Sara Ryan, thanks to a perfectly timed ride by Ashley Morgan in the $1 million contest at Randwick. After opening as the favourite with Picklebet, the son of Maurice drifted slightly due to the avalanche of money for Lord Of Biscay, who ended up jumping as the +170 favourite ahead of Matcha Latte at +340. Vintage Choice (+7000) led the field from Mogul Monarch (+2500) throughout the 1400m contest, while Magnatear (+1300) and Matcha Latte settled in perfect position behind the leading division. Lord Of Biscay settled right behind the eventual winner and followed him into the home straight as they spun the home corner at the 400m mark. The leaders didn’t find much early in the straight, which allowed the two favourites to run on by, with Matcha Latte taking over from Vintage Choice. Lord Of Biscay was breathing down the leader’s neck, and it looked like he was going to past; however, Matcha Latte continued to fight for Morgan and maintained his one-length lead. The runner-up challenged again late, but Matcha Latte proved too strong to hold off Lord Of Biscay and the fast-finishing Imposant (+3300), who flashed home into third place. Click here for all Randwick replays. Sara Ryan was emotional following the victory. “A big thanks to my team to get a horse like him, you know, back to perform at his absolute top,” Ryan said. “He’s broken my heart more times than once. “But we love him, I’ve always known his ability, and for him to go and do that, it’s just fantastic. “It’s honestly him, he’s such an obliging animal, he wants to be here, and he wants to do that. “Horses can lose confidence when they hurt themselves but he just wants to be here. “As a Provincial trainer, this is our championship so to come out here and win it with a horse like him after so many issues is fantastic. “It’s fantastic and I’m so proud of the team. “Yeah, we’re getting bigger. We’ve got a good team of people around us and a great team.” Ashley Morgan explained why he was quietly confident before the race. “When I got off him at Newcastle, I said to Sara, ‘I’ll be there that day.’ I didn’t have a ride, but I was like, ‘you know, you’ll get me on,” Morgan said. “Great job by her because the horse had his issues and she’s done a great job to rehab him and bring him back. “His form as a three-year-old was top class, and he ran second in the Cameron behind a Group 1 winner. “It was a clear stand-out form, and it was just getting it right.” “The barrier helped, I was happy to take the sit, he actually quickened better than I thought he would. “We sort of lobbed there a bit too soon and Kris’ horse [Lord Of Biscay] had his chance to get us, but he really dug in late.” Horse racing news View the full article
  3. Sergeant Major and Ethan Brown claims the Listed South Pacific Classic in Race 2 of The Championships Day 2 at Randwick. Photo: Bradleyphotos.com.au The Ciaron Maher-trained Sergeant Major ($6.50) has made every post a winner to claim the Listed South Pacific Classic (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday afternoon, holding off the fast-finishing Nostringsattached ($3.50) to secure his first Australian win on The Championships Day 2. The New Zealand import has been consistent without winning since his arrival, catching the eye second-up behind Autumn Glow in the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 22, suggesting the son of Proisir was nearing a win. That turned out to be the case on Saturday as Melbourne-based hoop Ethan Brown took all luck out of the equation, launching to the front from barrier three in the early stages. Fearless () was sent forward to sit to his outside as Tom Marquand looked to offset gate 13, while the well-supported Meridiana () was sent towards the rear of the field, poised to get the last crack at her rivals. Sergeant Major was quick to drop his rivals with 400m left to travel, with Nostringattached held up briefly before exploding in the final furlong, while Interjection ($26) was putting in the big strides late to ensure a grandstand finish. It was Sergeant Major getting the verdict in the end, however, with the $200,000 feature heading the way of the Melbourne-based stable. Click here for all Randwick replays. Ciaron Maher was on track at Randwick to break down the win. “Great job by the team,” said Maher. “He’s a horse that’s always shown really good ability. The team found another nice horse over in New Zealand and I think we’ll just continue on the path of a few of his fellow New Zealander’s. “Each prep he’ll just get better. Beautiful ride by Browny (Ethan Brown), took luck out of it and took the race by the scruff, very good and I can’t thank the team enough. “We’ll just assess his performance today, as I said, I always thought he’d be a horse better in time, but there is a big race up there (Stradbroke) you do get a light weight as a three-year-old, so we’ll see how we go.” Ethan Brown then spoke post-race. “Impressive horse, very impressive horse,” said Brown. “It’s always good to kick-off the day on this note. “He’s a horse that’s improved every start this prep, but I feel today he’s improved again, especially up to the 1400m. “I was very impressed with his turn of foot and going forward he’s certainly one to follow.” Horse racing news View the full article
  4. Spicy Lu wins the Listed Fernhill Mile for trainer Nick Olive. Photo: Bradleyphotos.com.au Nick Olive has pulled off an incredible training feat by taking Spicy Lu from a Class One Handicap at Albury to claim the Listed Fernhill Mile in the very next start on day two of The Championships at Randwick. The daughter of Tagloa opened as a +2500 outsider with horse racing bookmakers before being heavily backed on Friday and Saturday morning to jump at +500 on the third line of betting. After drawing barrier one and gaining one of the better frontrunning jockeys, Rachel King, Spicy Lu appeared to be one of the key speed influences in the race, and she gained an uncontested lead throughout, with Lady Pankhurst (+500) choosing to settle behind her. Michelangelo (+220), the race favourite with BlondeBet, settled at the back of the field and didn’t enjoy the slow tempo, while Tupukara (+290), who was the other market fancy, settled in fourth and gained the run of the race. However, as the leader turned for home and gave a strong kick at the 350m, she put up a two-length margin on the rest of the field. Going past the 100m mark, it was clear that no one was running down Spicy Lu, and she claimed a 1.9-length victory over Tupukara and Lady Pankhurst. Click here for all Randwick replays. Nick Olive was on course to speak about the win. “Bloody thrilled for all the team back at home, we’ve got such a team at home now, and they’ve done such a good job with her,” Olive said. “We always thought she’s had good ability, but you win two country races, and it’s a big step up to win a stakes race. “But she stepped up and got the job done, and it was a fantastic ride by Rach (King). “We thought that they might underestimate her, and she drew the one (barrier). “I said, ‘If you can dictate and get going from the 600 (metres), if she has been left alone, she will be hard to run down.’ “We’ll let things play out and see what happens in the next week.” Rachel King was complimentary of the winner in her post-race interview. “She is new, yeah, she wasn’t quite sure what to do in front,” King said of the winner. “She just kept improving and that big stride kept getting longer and longer. “She’s done that in second gear, like, I couldn’t get after her properly because she was running sideways.” Horse racing news View the full article

  18. Representatives from the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) and the Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit (HIWU) hosted a Town Hall Friday to dig down into the information issued in their recent annual reports and fatality metrics. One aim of the town hall, said HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus, was to publicly “look under the hood” of the fatality numbers to better understand how they're compiled. “How do we collect these metrics? What does the process look like? Why are we very confident that they are accurate?” said Lazarus. As much as the town hall was a backward look over the numbers, it provided a glimpse into what federal regulators are doing to further improve equine and (by extension) human safety. This includes a deeper dive into the causes behind shoulder fractures, otherwise known as proximal forelimb fractures–a fairly rare but nonetheless serious problem that, according to current data, appears most commonplace among horses when they start training or are returning to training after a layoff. “In 2024, approximately 15% of our fatalities, racing and training combined, were attributable to proximal forelimb fractures,” said Jennifer Durenberger, HISA's director of equine safety and welfare. “We have done a really nice job of building on the foundation of identifying which demographic is most susceptible to these that we can put that out there for industry awareness,” said Durenberger, who explained this information would be issued in the form of an advisory memo. “My goal [is] to reduce these proximal forelimb fractures significantly in a very short time,” said Durenberger. Racing and Training Fatalities: As per the recently released 2024 equine fatality data, last year was first (since the Jockey Club started compiling its nationwide Equine Injury Database) that racing fatalities were below one race-day fatality for 1,000 starts, at a rate of 0.9 fatalities per 1,000 starts. This figure was for HISA-regulated tracks. For tracks not regulated by HISA, the race-day equine fatality rate was almost double that number and showed a slight increase from 2023 figures. For the first time, HISA issued an annual report on training fatalities. Similar in effect to race-day fatality numbers, a training fatality comprised horses who died or were euthanized within 72 hours of an injury (or other event) sustained during a timed workout. Last year under HISA-regulated tracks, there were 181 of these training-related deaths, equating to 0.50 deaths per 1,000 official workouts. Lazarus stressed how, if regulators were accounting for all training activities, “the number would be much lower.” Fatal injuries of a morning, however, aren't confined to high-speed workouts. “I think there is a misunderstanding that horses only sustain fatal musculoskeletal injuries during timed and reported works, and that's not true,” said Durenberger. In a preliminary lookback, Durenberger explained, about one-third of fatal musculoskeletal injuries during morning training were not associated with breezing. “They were galloping. They were two-minute licking,” said Durenberger. “About [another] third of the time, we know they were either in the middle of, or just consequent to, a timed and reported work,” she added. “And there's another third where we're not sure or we don't have the right data. We'd like to get a bit more [information] about that for this year.” Indeed, Anjali Salooja, HISA's director of operations and compliance, discussed the steps the federal regulator was taking to better understand the specific causes behind all fatalities, both morning and afternoon. “For each training and racing fatality, we're also providing a subclass reflecting whether we believe the fatality was musculoskeletal or sudden death or other. We're hoping to share that data with the public as soon as this year,” said Salooja. “We're also looking at providing fatality metrics by racing surface, condition of surface, claiming races, again with an eye to teasing out some patterns–being able to ascertain improvements year over year, and hopefully shining a light on exactly what is going on that's leading to certain types of injuries and fatalities,” Salooja added. Scratches: One key change under HISA's watch is more uniform pre-race veterinary scrutiny–scrutiny, of course, that can lead to the last-minute scratch of a horse. Last year, the TDN found that scratched horses are notably more likely to face extended periods of time off than non-scratched horses. They typically take longer to get back on the work tab and to the races. A significant number simply never make it back. At the same time, given the money and time often invested into an intended runner, scratches are a major headache for connections. It appears, however, that the scratch-rate pre-and-post implementation of HISA hasn't changed notably. According to data presented at Friday's town hall, 12.7% of entries were scratched at HISA tracks for the first 30 months of HISA's implementation. Over an equivalent period prior to implementation, 11.9% of horses were scratched. The specific reasons underpinning these scratches are currently unknown. But regulators are digging down into this data, Lazarus explained. In other words, “what categories have the most scratches and what categories have the least,” she said. ADMC Program: HIWU's executive director Ben Mosier walked through some of the key statistics outlined in the agency's recent annual report. This included: That there were 76,534 samples collected last year from 26,585 different horses. That the Adverse Analytical Findings (AAF) rate worked out to 0.48% of all tests processed. In short, an AAF is the finding of a prohibited substance. That 14 individuals took advantage of the pro bono legal representation program on offer. That nearly 85% of tips submitted through an anonymous tip-line warranted a follow-up. “We have an extremely low rate of controlled medication positives or overages. I think that just goes to show that we're making a lot of progress and that the vast majority of horsemen are following the rules,” said Mosier. The average case resolution times have increased slightly from 2023 to 2024 by about six days. Mosier said this was primarily down to an increased case load last year over the year prior. In 2023 (when HIWU was operating for about seven months), there were 238 notices filed, compared to 394 notices filed last year (using the full calendar year). Furthermore, the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium's (RMTC) long-awaited study into Metformin is likely in its closing stages, said Mosier. “It has been reported to me by the RMTC that their scientific advisory committee is reviewing information. But [they] should be nearing the end of that study of relevant data,” said Mosier, “and announcing as well any recommendations on how we move forward with regulating Metformin.” According to Lazarus, HISA will be holding another town hall Apr, 24 to discuss the agency's financial and budgeting processes. 21. 9th-Oaklawn, $131,000, Alw (NW1$6MX)/Opt. Clm ($62,500), 4-11, 4yo/up, 6f, 1:09.27, ft, 5 1/4 lengths. SKELLY (g, 6, Practical Joke–Adande, by Bwana Charlie) ran a hole in the wind–much to the delight of the local crowd–en route to a supremely confident seasonal bow here against outclassed optional claiming rivals. Leaving the blocks like a rocket and immediately establishing control, Skelly rolled through splits of :21.96 and a half in :44.75 as he built up a sizeable margin entering the homestretch. In a position where the rest would need to produce a miracle to catch him on a 9 1/2-length advantage, the 1-5 favorite coasted home to score easily in a final time of 1:09.27. SW & GSP Run Classic (Runhappy) valiantly held on to second. Off since finishing 10th in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint last November, the Steve Asmussen trainee has been first or second in 18 of his 20 lifetime starts. In 2024, he won or placed seven times from eight starts, and had five triple-digit Beyers to show for it including when he was runner-up in the GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at Saratoga July 27. The gelding took his show to the international stage in the G3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint in Saudi Arabia Feb. 24 and ran second to Japan's multiple group winner Remake (Jpn) (Lani). At one point between his 2023 and 2024 campaigns, Skelly had built up a seven-race win streak, which was snapped in that aforementioned heartbreaker at King Abdulaziz Racecourse. 22. By Michael Guerin Winning any races with your mates is one of horse racing’s great joys. Winning a Group 1 is even more special. Two long-time friends combined both into the same first when We Walk By Faith stormed to victory in the Taylor Mile at Alexandra Park on Friday night. The NZ Derby winner is trained by Hayden Cullen and wife Amanda and was driven by Matthew White, with Hayden and Matty having known each other since they were 16-year-old lads growing up in Cambridge. But remarkably this was definitely their biggest win together because it is their only win together. Of any sort. “I don’t think Matty has driven a winner for me before,” says Cullen. “In fact, I don’t think he has even driven a horse for me in a race. “I don’t really know why. We have been great mates since we were 16 and he is a very good driver. “So to share this tonight is very cool.” For the second year running after the Mach Shard’s stunner last season a horse has come from near last to win the Taylor Mile and paid huge money, We Walk By Faith getting out to $35 with the bookies. He was good in his last two starts, the City of Auckland Free-For-All and off a handicap in a Country Cups race he couldn’t win at Cambridge last week. “Missing the big race last week when so many other horses had a hard run probably did us no harm,” says Cullen. “But it was still a big win and a great drive by Matty.” Cullen is now also a believer in the “Menangle Boost” the lift in performance many horses get after racing at Menangle, something he has seen twice in the last month with feature race wins like last night and Don’t Stop Dreaming in the City of Auckland. “Luke McCarthy told me in Sydney it would happen, this horse would be better when he went home,” said Cullen. “I think he is going to get better yet and maybe reach his peak in six months as he love it when the speed is on in races.” Like most Derby winners We Walk By Faith should end up a Cups horse but before then he will join stablemate Don’t Stop Dreaming in the Messenger on April 25 while longer term he is eligible for the A$2.1million Eureka in Sydney being Australian-bred. The win continued a great autumn for the Cullens who have now become one of the leading strike rate stables in the country albeit without wanting to get too big. Republican Party was a huge second after appearing to strike the winner’s sulky wheel at the 400m while Rakero Rocket was strong in third and Merlin luckless in fourth after finding a mid-pack gap in the home straight about 5cm too narrow to sneak through. His trainers Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan and driver Zachary Butcher needed no such luck in the $75,000 NZBS Harness Million Trot as Meant To Be started this season where he left off in 2024. The big fella worked straight around the field to lead after 600m and easily held stablemate Higher Power in a performance that makes it hard to see him beaten in the Northern Trotting Derby in two weeks. The night’s other trotting feature saw a cunning Ben Hope drive give him the biggest win of his training career when Muscle Mountain won the Lyell Creek Trot. Hope only started training with father Greg last week so last night’s Group 2 was their most important win together and the young man earned it by being brave enough to hand the lead away on the hot favourite with a lap to go. Muscle Mountain had led and had Queen Elida on his back so Hope opted to let Not As Promised stroll past him at the bell, putting Queen Elida three back but giving himself the passing lane. It was a gutsy move but one that paid off and will leave Muscle Mountain with juice in the tank and feeling good for the two big races ahead so Hope’s daring may yet pay more dividends. 23. By Michael Guerin A horse who started the season a maiden almost cost trainer Tim Trathen his voice in the richest race at Addington on Friday night. Nellie Doyle has gone from maidens to winner of the $52,500 Future Wealth Sires’ Stakes Classic in the space of three months and 1 day, giving Trathen the richest win of his training career. “I haven’t yelled that loud in a while,” says the West Melton trainer. “We won the Invercargill Cup with Dadndave a few years ago but it wasn’t worth as much as this so this is a huge thrill. “Blair drove her beautiful and she won with the plugs still in.” While Trathen trains Nellie Doyle he says plenty of credit needs to go to former trainer Kim Nyhan. “Kim had her for a long time and broke her in and did a wonderful job with her. “She had her on a lease but broke her wrist so asked me to take her and then she started to show us a bit and I had a few mates who wanted in on a nice horse. “So we managed to buy her and Kim got looked after and so we owe her for doing such a good job with her manners.” Trathen took Nellie Doyle back to his old stomping ground of Nelson at the start of the year and she won both days and he hasn’t been scared to travel her to gain experience, popping over to the West Coast a few starts ago. With each trip, each race, she has learned and got better and judging by the quality of horse she beat last night at just her 13th start she will edge her way closer to the highest grades as 2025 progresses. The win will have been popular in the Addington stabling block, Trathen well-liked and known by everybody. When Nellie Doyle is eventually retired she has some breeding to back up her broodmare credentials, being out of five-race winner Perfect For Now, herself out of the high-class mare Look, from the famous Smith/Doyle/Pope family breed. While it was the richest win of Trathen’s career it was just another night of big-race domination from Orange. His Nellie Doyle drive was perfect but his win earlier on General Jen required even more tatctical nous as he went from possibly being trapped three back at the bell to racing to the lead and in the process trapping key rivals Captain Mistress three back in a brilliantly aware piece of driving. General Jen ended up being way too good in the $42,500 Magness Benrow Semi Final and she may have earned herself a crack at the Northern Oaks while Captains Mistress should remain on that path as she lost no fans in second. In between those two drives Orange produced a no-panic response when trapped parked on a hot speed to still eventually get Vessem home a narrow winner of the main pace. The 1980m mobile was turned into a 1:55 mile rate way by Beach Ball and Nathan Williamson, with the last 800m in 58.4 but final 400m in 30.2 telling the story of a great spectacle View the full article
  24. Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-bred horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Saturday's Observations features a full-brother to Coolmore stallion Blackbeard (Ire). 2.20 Curragh, Cond, €22,000, 2yo, 5fT CHARLES DARWIN (IRE) (No Nay Never) is the fourth foal out of the G1 Moyglare Stud Stakes fourth Muirin (Ire) (Born To Sea {Ire}), whose son Blackbeard (Ire) carried all before him for Ballydoyle in 2022 when taking the G1 Middle Park Stakes and G1 Prix Morny. Aidan O'Brien is keen to double up in 2-year-old races so far in 2025 and his other runner Neolithic (Ire) (Sioux Nation) is a half-brother to the G1 Fillies' Mile third Bright Diamond (Ire) (El Kabeir), who earned TDN Rising Star status with a nine-length win on her debut. Heading the opposition is Moyglare Stud's homebred colt Evening Blues (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}), a Ger Lyons-trained relative of the G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Homeless Songs (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). 1.15 Curragh, Mdn, €20,000, 2yo, 6fT EXTRAVAGANT (IRE) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) is the first string of a Ballydoyle pair in the maiden used by the stable to launch No Nay Never's subsequent Group 1-winning siblings Little Big Bear (Ire) and Whistlejacket (Ire) as well as the eventual G3 Killavullan Stakes scorer Glounthaune (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) since 2021. Starting early for a half-brother to horse Sea The Stars's high-class middle-distance performer Cloth Of Stars (Ire), the €300,000 Goffs Orby Book 1 graduate encounters a Jim Bolger homebred in Lonradh (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}), a half-sister to his G1 Vincent O'Brien National Stakes-winning sire Verbal Dexterity (Ire). 3.45 Newbury, Mdn, £22,500, 3yo, 8f 7yT CROWN OF OAKS (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) is an eyecatching entry from William Haggas in the maiden he won 12 months ago with Economics (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) and in 2022 with My Prospero (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}). Serious notebook material with the way he finished off when third on his debut over seven furlongs at Newmarket in October, the Tony Bloom and Ian McAleavy-owned son of the prolific stakes producer Forest Crown (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) from Car Colston Hall Stud's excellent family of Wiener Wald (Woodman), he is set to be a warm order in a maiden stacked with similarly promising types. They include Cayton Park Stud's John and Thady Gosden-trained King Of Narnia (GB) (Kingman {GB}), another son of a quality producer in the GII Lake Placid Stakes winner and GI Garden City Stakes-placed Sharp Susan (Touch Gold), while one of the newcomers is Valmont and Ballylinch Stud's Spanish Train (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), a Paul and Oliver Cole-trained half-brother to the 2023 G1 Futurity Trophy hero Ancient Wisdom (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) who runs in the opening G3 John Porter Stakes. 25. He's not just back, he might be even better than he was last year. 'TDN Rising Star' Carl Spackler (Ire) (h, 5, Lope de Vega {Ire})–Zindaya, by More Than Ready), a back-to-back Grade I winner last year before an uncharacteristic off-the-board finish in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile, unleashed a scintillating turn of foot in his 5-year-old debut at Keeneland Friday, capturing the $650,000 GI Maker's Mark Mile Stakes by four or five widening lengths. It was GIII Tampa Bay runner-up Northern Invader (Collected) who set the :23.67 and :48.06 pace while Carl Spackler bided his time in fourth on the outside. Flavien Prat gave the e Five Racing Thoroughbreds runner his cue on the turn and the popular chestnut ranged up in full flight while several paths wide and quickly opened up a daylight lead in the stretch. There was no catching the 4-5 favorite as 3-1 second choice Integration (Quality Road), most recently second in the GI Pegasus World Cup Turf, chased him home and last year's GI Belmont Derby winner Trikari (Oscar Performance) got up for third. Among Carl Spackler's six lifetime graded wins was a victory over this course in October when he captured the GI Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes. He covered the eight furlongs in Friday's Maker's Mark over a good course in 1:36.56.
