What's rare is wonderful. Royal Ascot winners coming on the market is certainly a rare thing and Quai De Bethune (Persian King), successful in the Golden Gates Stakes at the Royal meeting, was most certainly wonderful when selling to Blandford Bloodstock's Richard Brown for a record-high price of 775,000gns at the Tattersalls July Sale. That sum eclipsed the previous best that was achieved just over 24 hours earlier for Calyx's sister that went the way of Badgers Bloodstock at 550,000gns. But Quai De Bethune was billed as the star attraction to this sale and he didn't disappoint. Flanked by Wathnan Racing's Olly Tait and Case Clay at the top of the steps to the left of Matt Hall on the rostrum, Richard Brown saw off a persistent challenge from an online bidder as well as Dr Khaled Salami of KGS Bloodstock who stood at the exit of the sales ring. Quai De Bethune has been expertly managed by Andrew Balding to win two of his six starts, with that career highlight at Royal Ascot earning the three-year-old colt a rating of 100. While an international campaign may beckon, Brown revealed that the immediate plan would be for Quai De Bethune to stay with Balding. He explained, “Obviously the horse won at Royal Ascot. [He] didn't have the smoothest passage but found a way to win. What can you say? It's not very often a Royal Ascot winner comes on the market. He's still relatively lightly-raced and I think the plan looks like he will go back to Andrew with a Dubai campaign potentially. We'll give him a break and maybe he could have a Middle Eastern campaign. We'll see. We hope that he has a good future. We were impressed by him at Royal Ascot.” Balding told TDN Europe on the eve of this sale that he felt he had brought a strong draft to the market. Quai De Bethune headed the 1,873,500gns netted for 23 horses sold under his Kingsclere Training Stables banner, which made up more than 10 per cent of the entire turnover from the sale. Reflecting on the sale, the trainer said, “We are thrilled. We have had a very strong sale with the highlight obviously being Quai De Bethune's price. It was always the plan to come to auction with him and, after he won at Royal Ascot, we thought he'd be in the position to make a decent price, which he has. It is great news that he is coming back to us.” All told, there were seven Balding-trained horses that broke the six-figure mark this week while the 73-rated maiden General Admission (Kameko) was another to play a leading role to the booming trade deep into the Thursday session when selling for 210,000gns to Al Watan Club. The three-year-old colt had placed in three of his seven starts and is understood to be destined for big races in the Middle East. Ali A Aneizi commented, “It is the same story – he is for the big races in Libya. I think he will get the Classic distance and he is a very sound horse.” Meanwhile, Balding's Time Allowed (Lope De Vega) and Dream Out Loud (Mehmas) also featured among the top 10 lots on the day when selling to Busuttin Young Racing for 160,000gns and Billy Jackson-Stops for 100,000gns respectively. Busuttin Young Racing was the banner in which Australian-based buyer Trent Busuttin was signing under and he revealed his new recruit was likely to continue his career Down Under. He said, “We have been active buyers over the last three or four years at Tattersalls and we have had great luck with similarly lightly-raced sorts of horses as this. He looks like an improving and progressive type and fits the criteria to go through the grades here in Australia. He will be syndicated.” Outstanding July Sale Trade It was a July Sale to remember with turnover climbing 22% to 16,928,700gns while the average was up 17% to 30,015gns and the median by 36% to 15,000gns. The clearance rate settled at 88%, which was down by 2% on last year. Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony commented, “Nothing drives demand like success, and the back cover of this year's Tattersalls July Sale catalogue illustrates that perfectly. It features Sprint Cup winner Regional, Champion Hurdle winner Golden Ace, and Entreat, the dam of Prix du Jockey Club winner Camille Pissarro. All were purchased at the July Sale, clearly demonstrating the adage of 'something for everyone.' “That success, along with many similar stories, has attracted a diverse and international crowd to a sun-drenched Park Paddocks, creating a genuine buzz around what is one of the most enjoyable weeks of sales and racing in the European calendar. Buyers from Australia, the Gulf, Europe, and Asia played major roles in a sale that recorded significant increases in turnover and average price, as well as a record median.” He added, “The enduring appeal of this sale is underpinned by the continued support of leading global owner-breeders such as Coolmore, Godolphin, and Juddmonte. Their high-class consignments consistently draw strong international interest, so it was no surprise that the beautifully bred Juddmonte filly Orchid Bouquet set a new July Sale record at 550,000 guineas. That record lasted barely 24 hours before the Andrew Balding-trained Quai de Bethune surpassed it, selling for 775,000 guineas after intense bidding between Qatari and Libyan interests to secure the Royal Ascot winner. “We now look ahead to the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale and the beginning of the yearling sales season, with optimism that the enduring appeal of British and Irish bloodstock will continue to resonate, despite the challenges currently facing the industry.” Talking Points Stephen Thorne is a trainer making waves in his native Ireland and lit up the afternoon session of Thursday's sale when going to 155,000gns to secure four-year-old gelding Sir Les Patterson. The three-time winner boasts an all-weather rating of 91 and was signed for in conjunction with Thorne's syndicate Shamrock Thoroughbreds. The trainer said, “He has got a high Timeform rating on his last couple of starts on the all-weather and the turf. He could make up into a premier handicap horse at home. There might be a bit more to come and, down the road, he could develop into a horse with stakes potential as he is still a very lightly-raced sprinter. There is something of a lack of sprinters at home so I think he will fit the programme well. He might always be one to travel if he gets his rating up a bit.” Jamie Osborne has been a major supporter of the horses-in-training sales at Tattersalls down through the years and added the 97-rated four-year-old gelding Dosman (Kingman) to his squad for 100,000gns. Dosman had been trained to win once from six starts for Roger Varian and was last seen finishing second in a valuable seven-furlong handicap at Newcastle in June. The Godolphin draft alone accounted for 575,500gns in turnover for 18 lots sold on the day. Along with Castlebridge, Juddmonte and Andrew Balding, Godolphin cleared seven figures in trade with its overall tally standing at 1,818,000gns for 48 lots sold. By far the busiest consignment was Castlebridge, with 2,327,500gns accounted for through 92 horses. Not only did Richard Brown sign for the record-breaking sale-topper Quai De Bethune, but Blandford Bloodstock ended the week as the busiest buyer with 10 horses sourced for 1,432,000gns. Blandford was the only buyer to surpass the seven-figure mark but honorary mention must go to Gassim Ghazali, who spent 879,000gns on six horses. Buy of the Day Some smart horses have been sold out of the Godolphin draft down through the years and the unexposed Coronado King could look value at 18,000gns to Blandford Bloodstock. He showed distinct promise in both of his starts for Charlie Appleby, including when last seen when beaten just under six lengths to Dosman, who sold for 100,000gns on the same evening. Coronado King should find his bracket and appears to have been well-bought. Thought for the Day This week's trade drilled home the point that the sale ring has become the best place for an owner to generate a few quid. Prize-money is not where it should be and owners can barely get a bet on any more. So where is the angle? It seems as though, for those who don't have a never-ending stream of funds to support their hobby, selling is becoming the most lucrative and attainable option when trying to make the whole thing pay. The 2025 BBAG September Yearling Sale catalogue, featuring siblings to several Classic winners spread across Germany and Italy, is now online. Set for Friday, September 5 at 10 a.m., the sale has attracted 210 yearlings, with 51% of the catalogue either out of black-type mares or full- or half-siblings to black-type horses. There are also 28 siblings to group winners ready to go under the hammer, while all yearlings are nominated for the 19 BBAG auction races. A free, new event, “Horses in the City”, will be held at the Place de la Concorde in Paris on September 5-6, France Galop announced on Thursday. Sister events will soon be available in other cities like Deauville and Chantilly. Racehorses will take over a transformed Place de la Concorde, which will be turned into a parade ring, hosting horse parades and jockeys, centred in an ephemeral village. The public will be able to enjoy many free activities ranging from equestrian demonstrations, activities for children, as well as racehorses retrained by Au-Dela des Pistes put through their paces. There will also be an opportunity to meet many racing professionals and see the training provided in the AFASEC schools, dedicated to breeding and racing. “Horses in the City” is made possible thanks to the permission of the Paris City Hall, but also to the support of all the players in the sector: GTHP (Groupement Technique des Hippodromes Parisiens), AFASEC which trains in racing professions, FNCH (National Federation of Horse Racing) or the association “Au-delà des pistes” which promotes the retraining of racehorses. The event is part of France Galop president Guillaume de Saint-Seine's vision to bring racing back to the people of France. The New York Racing Association will partner with local and regional supermarket chain Market 32 and Price Chopper during the summer meet at Saratoga Race Course to benefit the Regional Food Bank. Each time the three horse wins the second race on the afternoon's card, Market 32 and Price Chopper and Polar Beverages will donate 1,000 meals to the Regional Food Bank. SARATOGA SPRINGS – There are several reasons trainer Miguel Clement has special feelings for the 5-year-old horse Far Bridge (English Channel), who runs in Saturday's $200,000 GII Bowling Green Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. The record Far Bridge has put together makes his trainer proud. Eight wins in 17 career starts, three second- and three third-place finishes. Career earnings of $2,262,980. He is a multiple Grade I winner. “He is very consistent,” Clement said outside his barn at the Oklahoma Training Track Thursday morning. “He is a hard tryer; as long as you do well by him, he will reward you. Consistent, versatile. He is everything you want in a racehorse.” There is a more personal connection that the 34-year-old Clement has with Far Bridge. He said Far Bridge was the last horse his late father, Christophe, saddled. That was in the GII Man o'War Stakes, a race Far Bridge won by a length on May 10. Christophe Clement passed away 15 days later at the age of 59 of a rare form of eye cancer “He loved Far Bridge,” Miguel Clement said. “He thought he was the best turf stayer in the country.” This year, Far Bridge has won two of three starts. He was also victorious in the GIII Pan American Stakes at Gulfstream Park Mar. 29. The Man o'War was 1 3/8 miles; the Pan American was 1 1/2 miles. In his last start, he finished third in a three-horse photo in the 1 1/8-mile GI Manhattan Stakes June 8. Considering that Far Bridge likes to run longer, it was a remarkable effort. The race was won by stablemate Deterministic (Liam's Map) and that gave Miguel Clement his first Grade I training win. “[Far Bridge] ran a gallant race and nearly won it anyway,” Clement said. “That is what a tough horse he is. Regardless of the surface or the distance, he tries very hard.” Clement said he was thinking about training Far Bridge up to the $750,000 GI Sword Dancer Aug. 9, but the horse was doing so well, he decided to run in the Bowling Green. Clement also has entered Tawny Port (Pioneerof the Nile) in the Bowling Green, but he might be rerouted to the $600,000 GII United Nations Stakes at Monmouth on July 19. Pletcher Hopeful But Doesn't Think He'll Win Spa's Training Title For so many years, Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher was the hunted one when it came to the annual chase for supremacy for top conditioner at the Saratoga Race Course meet. Everyone chased Pletcher, who, stockpiled a record 14 training titles. The first came in 1998, the last in 2020. In between, his barn dominated as had one streak of five straight titles (2002-2006) and another of six (2010-2015). In the last four years, Pletcher has been the chaser as Chad Brown's barn has won the last four titles. A season ago, Brown won 45 races with Pletcher and Mike Maker getting 22 wins each to claim second. Todd Pletcher | Sarah Andrew Coming into the 40 days of summer at Saratoga, Pletcher knows that knocking Brown off his perch will be a tall order, not just for him, for everybody else. If Pletcher is going to make a run, it will have to come from his rookies, his 2-year-olds. “Our stable is unbalanced,” Pletcher said outside his office at the Oklahoma Training Track. “We had a disappointing 3-year-old crop this year–colts and fillies–and that kind of puts the emphasis on a few older horses and a lot of 2-year-olds.” Pletcher's older horses include two of the best in training in Mindframe (Constitution) and Fierceness (City of Light), who could end up facing off against each other in the GI Whitney Stakes next month. The race for the training title–and the jockey race–has always seemed to take on more significance at Saratoga. Racing fans follow it daily like baseball fans eyeball the standings every day. “I agree with you, people follow it more here than anywhere else,” Pletcher said. “When you have a streak going, it's pretty cool. We had a good streak here at one time; we had a streak at Gulfstream.” Pletcher won 15 straight titles at Gulfstream Park in Florida starting in 2004. Although Brown is clearly the favorite to win this year, Pletcher won't concede anything. “You are always hopeful it can happen,” he said. “We would have to have a real tremendous 2-year-old season to even be competitive, I think. But look, we are going to participate, for sure.” Brisset Looking For Another Solid 2-Year-Old Filly Trainer Rodolphe Brisset won the listed Schuylerville Stakes last week during the Fourth of July Festival with Kingsolver (Omaha Beach). Historically, the Schuylerville, the first of three stake races for 2-year-old fillies, is held on opening day of the regular Saratoga meet. The other two stake races for the juvenile fillies are the GIII Adirondack on Aug. 3 and the GI Spinaway on Aug. 30. Brisset isn't planning on bringing Kingsolver back for the Adirondack, but that doesn't mean he won't be represented. He said 'TDN Rising Star' Meringue (Frosted), who broke her maiden by a neck going five furlongs on the grass at Churchill Downs on June 19, could ship here from Keeneland for the Adirondack. “That could be the spot,” Brisset said outside his barn on the Oklahoma Training Track. “She has been breezing pretty good on the dirt and you want to find out sooner than later if they like it.” Meringue | Coady Media Meringue, owned by Elements Racing LLC, could also stay on the grass, Brisset said, and could run in the listed Bolton Landing on Aug. 17. That race is 5 1/2 furlongs on the grass. But, he said, the timing might be right for him to give Meringue a chance on dirt. “If she were to win that, you would obviously look at the Spinaway or another big one on the dirt,” he said. “If she doesn't perform the way you want to and you find she wants turf, you can rest and get ready for Kentucky Downs.” As for Kingsolver, she will remain, for now, at Saratoga. Brisset said he might try her on the grass in the Bolton Landing. Kingsolver is owned by Storyteller Racing, Michael Schroeck, Open Gate Horse Ventures, Brian Cahoe, Scott Catlett, Dave Russel, Matthew Ransdell, Michael Motley and Joel Braun. She won the Schuylerville after finishing fifth in her first start at Churchill Downs. Valdi de Souza, a popular figure within the breeze-up community who died at the age of 49 following a freak accident at work, will be remembered at Cork on Friday, July 25 when a race will be run in his memory. De Souza rode over a couple of hundred winners as a professional jockey in his native Brazil and also enjoyed stints on the Saudi Arabian circuit. His finest hour in the saddle came when he partnered Rock Of Rochelle to win a Listed race at the Curragh for trainer Andrew Kinsella back in 2007. As well as Holland, for whom he worked for 11 years, and Kinsella, de Souza enjoyed spells with Ken Condon and Willie McCreery. Brant Dunshea, acting chief executive of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), has revealed that the BHA is working to produce a set of “incredibly strict conditions” with Oisin Murphy following his conviction for drink-driving. Murphy, 29, was last week fined £70,000 and banned from driving for 20 months having pleaded guilty to one count of driving a motor vehicle while over the prescribed limit of alcohol. Until the criminal proceedings were finalised, the BHA did not have the full details surrounding the case, according to Dunshea, who confirmed that conversations with Murphy regarding the conditions of his licence are already underway. “Matters around licensing are personal in nature and every individual has different challenges,” Dunshea told ITV Racing on Thursday. “When it comes to licensing we maintain a private relationship with individuals. “There will be times when we have to deal with certain issues in a different way, not only to address issues that have emerged like in Oisin's situation, but also to support individuals who might be dealing with a whole range of challenges. “What has occurred, which has been reported and Oisin has spoken about that, is below the standard we would expect in terms of British racing. But, importantly, we make every effort to protect and enhance the safety of our jockeys and our horses. “As a consequence between heavy engagement between Oisin and our team, we're going through a process at the moment of agreeing a set of incredibly strict conditions and this will include enhanced testing both on the racecourse and away from the racecourse.” He added, “To be very clear, the BHA weren't given access to the information in relation to the criminal proceedings up until the full details were given in court. Juddmonte's Field Of Gold won the G1 St James's Palace Stakes by three and a half lengths, while stablemate Ombudsman ran out a decisive winner of the G1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes, by two lengths from last year's G1 Champion Stakes winner Anmaat (Awtaad) [123]. Both horses are now rated 127, matching the figure Forever Young achieved when winning the G1 Saudi Cup.
