  1. What Newcastle Races Where Newcastle Racecourse – 100 Darling St, Broadmeadow NSW 2292 When Monday, March 24, 2025 First Race 1:15pm AEDT Visit Dabble The new week of racing gets underway at Newcastle Racecourse on Monday afternoon, with a competitive seven-part program set for decision. The rail moves out +2m the entire circuit, and with consistent rainfall forecast to hit the course proper across the weekend, participants are likely to be racing on Heavy track for race-day. All the action in the hunter is scheduled to commence at 1:15pm local time. Best Bet at Newcastle: Love And Light The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Love And Light returns after a 256-day spell and has had plenty of work in preparation for this first-up assignment. The daughter of Capitalist stretched out to make every post a winner in a recent barrier trial at Randwick on March 10, booting clear by 3.5 lengths under the guidance of Rachel King. She makes the trip to Newcastle to take the reins, and provided she can dictate terms throughout, expect Love And Light to shirk the maiden tag at start six. Best Bet Race 5 – #2 Love And Light (8) 4yo Mare | T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | J: Rachel King (58kg) Next Best at Newcastle: Flying Argento Flying Argento whacked away first-up at Hawkesbury on March 8 over an unsuitable journey (1500m) and appears well placed stepping out to the 2100m second-up. The three-year-old gelding produced a strong maiden victory with a similar setup at the end of last preparation and won’t mind the sting out of the ground heading into this BM58 contest. Reece Jones has the option to press forward from the wide draw (8), and provided he can slot in for cover a crucial stage, Flying Argento should have no issues justifying favouritism with horse racing bookmakers. Next Best Race 1 – #5 Flying Argento (8) 3yo Gelding | T: Gary Portelli | J: Reece Jones (59kg) Best Value at Newcastle: Our Emily Our Emily has shown glimpses of a talented type in her debut campaign, breaking her maiden on debut at Port Macquarie on February 16 before suffering some interference in back-to-back starts. She appears poised to doing something fourth-up as she steps out to the 1300m for the first time, showing a good turn-of-foot at the back end of her races. Louise Day gets should land in the ideal stalking position from barrier two, and provided the brakes fall her way when trying to get clear, Our Emily should be fighting out the finish at a good price with Dabble. Best Value Race 7 – #10 Our Emily (2) 3yo Filly | T: John Bannister | J: Louise Day (57kg) Monday quaddie tips for Newcastle Newcastle quadrella selections March 24, 2025 1-2-3-5 2 4-5-7-10 4-5-9-10-11 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article
  2. It’s been a big night for Australia’s best trotting and pacing talent. Leap To Fame, Don Hugo and The Locomotive were all among those in winning form last night as they count down to the $650,000 TAB Trot and the $1m The Race by betcha at Cambridge’s Night of Champions on Friday, April 4. A $3.30 third favourite for the TAB Trot, The Locomotive has also been confirmed as heading to Sweden to take on the iconic Elitlopp in May. The Locomotive full steam ahead to Sweden By Adam Hamilton Star Aussie trotter The Locomotive’s New Zealand raid just got even more interesting. The reigning Inter Dominion winner will springboard from the $650,000 TAB Trot at Cambridge on April 4 to take on the world’s best trotters in Sweden. Like Just Believe two years ago, The Locomotive will tackle the iconic Elitlopp at Stockholm’s Solvalla track on May 25. The Locomotive will be the fourth Aussie-trained trotter to contest the Elitlopp, following Just Believe, Maori Time (2018) and Sundons Gift (2009). Including Kiwi trotters, only the great mare Pride Of Petite has been able to qualify for the Elitlopp final, run on the same day as the heats. She ran fourth in a heat and sixth in the 1997 final. Solvalla officials broke the news of The Locomotive’s trip overnight. His very excited trainer-driver Brad Hewitt said: “We’re confident he’s the right sort of horse with the class and speed for a race like the Elitlopp. “As long as he travels well, settles in and has some luck with barrier draws, he can make and be very competitive in the final. “It will be good to get over almost six weeks before the race to have plenty of time to settle in.” Hewitt explained how spending time with Swedish superstar Bjorn Goop at last month’s Ladbrokes Ultimate Driver Challenge in Brisbane played an integral role in him and owner Glenn Holland chasing an Elitlopp berth. “We’d been thinking about the Elitlopp, but we really warmed to the idea after having a long talk with Bjorn Goop when he was in Brisbane last month,” he said. “We’ve kept in touch since and his positivity has been a big factor in taking on the challenge. “Like everyone here, we watched with great interest when Just Believe went over a couple of years ago and was so competitive in a couple of big races. “Glenn (Holland, owner) and I are hugely thankful for the faith and support Solvalla have shown in us and The Locomotive and we hope to become the first Australian-trained trotter to make an Elitlopp final. We’re sure he won’t be just making up the numbers.” After his latest win at Menangle last night (Saturday), The Locomotive will be on a flight from Sydney to Auckland with Don Hugo and Leap To Fame next Sunday. The Locomotive posted a scorching 1min52.1sec mile when he cruised to a 12.9m victory. The Elitlopp bid means The Locomotive won’t defend his Inter Dominion title at Albion Park in July. “It’s not possible to do both, so we’ll leave him in Sweden for a couple months and a few other major races after the Elitlopp to make the most of the trip,” Holland said. “I said to Brad when the invite came from Solvalla, we simply have to do it. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” Im Ready Jet and Arcee Phoenix also continued the fairytale night for Cambridge officials when they won last night. Any doubts of Andy Gath’s mare Im Ready Jet making the trip to Cambridge were quashed when she toyed with her rivals in the Group 1 Sumthingaboutmaori Mares’ Trotting free-for-all. It was her second win from as many starts this campaign. It was Im Ready Jet’s third win in the Group 1 race in the past four years and took her career earnings past $750,000. Arcee Phoenix looked back to his best when he worked to the front, dictated terms and dashed away to easily win the Scotch Notch Memorial at Melton. Aussie trotter to start NZ campaign at Cambridge this Friday By Adam Hamilton Emerging Queensland trotter Not As Promised will kick-start the Aussie raid on Cambridge when he steps out in Friday night’s $60,000 Group 2 Waikato Trotters’ Flying Mile. The 2023 Australian 3YO Trotter of the Year was scratched from Albion Park last night so he can fly from Sydney to Auckland today (Sunday). “We’re deliberately going early so he can have a look at the track and have more time to settle in,” trainer Graham Dwyer said. “He didn’t travel as well as we hoped when he took him to Christchurch at the end of 2023, but settled better with time, so we’ve got that in mind.” Not As Promised missed all of 2024 with injury, but has returned in terrific style with six wins and a second from eight starts this season. “We’re really happy with him,” Dwyer said. “I’m sure he’s come better, but whether that’s good enough to win a race like this (TAB Trot) is something we’ll just have to find out. “We were keen to give it a go and it’s great to have a slot.” Regular driver Nathan Dawson, Australia’s premier driver in 2023, will make the trip across. “Nathan will drive him this week, then have some time in the South Island, before coming back for the big one,” Dwyer said. The pacing bred Not As Promised has raced just 24 times for 15 wins, six placings and banked $181,320. His major wins came at three in the Group 1 Victoria Trotters’ Derby and Breeders Crown double. Not As Promised then ran a huge fourth in the NZ Trotting Derby won by Sunnys Sister after enduring a torrid run. The gelding continues to race in the trust and memory of his late owner Tony Veivers, who lost a long battle with bowel cancer late last year. Leap to Fame and Don Hugo have dominant wins before flying to NZ By Adam Hamilton Aussie pacing stars Leap To Fame and Don Hugo both looked fantastic last night winning their final lead-up races for the $1mil Race by betcha at Cambridge. Don Hugo was first out, working his way to the lead and winning as he liked in a 1min49.3sec free-for-all mile. The Miracle Mile winner scorched his last quarter in 25.9sec. Leap To Fame was asked to do a lot more and delivered, smashing the Albion Park 1660m track record with a 1min48.6sec mile rate and runaway 23m win. It took 0.5sec off Duke Of Scotland’s track record. Leap To Fame looked awesome. Interestingly, he time was almost as quick as he went in the Miracle Mile when second to Don Hugo and there’s no doubt Menangle is a considerably bigger and faster track than Albion Park. Leap To Fame will head to Sydney by road later this week and join Don Hugo on the same flight next Sunday. View the full article

  8. TIZTASTIC (c, 3, Tiz the Law–Keesha, by Tapit) swung into action four wide into the long Fair Grounds straight, took command a furlong from home and kept on gamely to take Saturday's GII TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby by 2 1/4 lengths, earning 100 points and securing himself a spot in the field for the GI Kentucky Derby five weeks away. Off at odds of 15-2 exiting a fifth to Coal Battle (Coal Front) in the GII Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Feb. 23, the $80,000 Keeneland January short-yearling and $335,000 graduate of that auction house's September Yearling Sale dropped himself out to the back of the pack to race last but one as Sam F. Davis Stakes hero John Hancock (Constitution) showed the way through an opening quarter that was lively enough in :22.99. Still near the tail as they passed the six-furlong pole, Tiztastic commenced a middle move that carried him into a position just in back of centerfield with four furlongs to travel, while John Hancock was clinging to a tenuous advantage after three-quarters in 1:11.03. Accelerating sharply and pinching ground ominously at the inside on the turn, Tiztastic was steered out into about the four path as Built (Hard Spun), who had enjoyed the run of the race just in the slipstream of the front-runner, got first run and set sail for home. John Hancock signed off readily, but Tiztastic came calling for the lead at the furlong grounds, wanted to lug in late but held safe. Chunk of Gold (Preservationist) was a good second ahead of Instant Replay (Maximum Security), who ran on well from the second half of the field to be third. 15. After finishing as the runner-up on debut at Churchill Downs last summer, Kimchi Cat (Twirling Candy) graduated with a 3 1/2-length score at the Spa in mid-July. The dark bay took home the off-the-turf Bolton Landing Stakes trophy Aug. 18, but was well-beaten in the GIII Pocahontas Stakes under the Twin Spires Sept. 14. Turned out since the fall and then back on the tab in January, the 3-year-old went off as the 8-5 second choice here. Kimchi Cat sat just to the outside of pacesetter Battleshipper (Midshipman) up the backstretch. Given her cue entering the far turn, the Tom Amoss trainee rolled into the lane, gunned her engine and cruised all the way to the Larry Snyder enclosure. Kentucky Smokeshow (Volatile) was the runner-up. The winner's dam foaled a filly by McKinzie last year and was entered in Maxfield's book for this term. 16. Six starts. Six wins. Godolphin homebred GOOD CHEER (f, 3, Medaglia d'Oro–Wedding Toast, by Street Sense) stamped herself as a force to be reckoned with in Louisville on the first Friday in May with another impressive win in Saturday's GII Fair Grounds Oaks. Brought back a winner this year in the GII Rachel Alexandra Stakes Feb. 15, the 2-5 favorite picked up her fourth straight win over the 1 1/16-mile distance. Stalking just off the pace as Ahavah (City of Light) led narrowly over Her Laugh (Practical Joke) up the backstretch, Good Cheer always loomed three wide and was more than up to the task when prompted off the far turn for an effort. Ahavah did well to hang onto second but Good Cheer was well clear even as she drifted down to the rail in the later stages to keep her perfect streak in tact. Lifetime Record: 6-6-0-0. 18. Bless the Broken (f, 3, Laoban–The Nightingale, by Tapit), third in the GII Fasig-Tipton Rachel Alexandra S. Feb. 15, delivered a come-from-behind victory at odds of 6-1 in the Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park, good for 50 points on the road to the GI Kentucky Oaks. As Catch Can (Mo Town) was second; Admit (Blame) was third. The final time for 1 1/16 miles was 1:44.65. Lifetime Record: 7-2-2-1. 19. Lousiana-bred millionaire TOUCHUPONASTAR (g, 6, Star Guitar–Touch Magic, by Lion Heart) could have won the Sunday stakes named for his sire practically by just showing up, but instead, connections took the path of greater resistance and allowed him to take his chance against the likes of Eclipse Award and GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner 'TDN Rising Star' Sierra Leone (Gun Runner) in Saturday's GII New Orleans Classic Stakes. Owned by former NFL quarterback Jake Delhomme's Set-Hut LLC, the Louisana-bred played catch me if you can in front of a partisan crowd in the Big Easy and catch him they could not. Sent immediately into the lead by Tim Thornton, Touchuponastar galloped them along in :24 flat and :47.40 as Sierra Leone caboosed the field while never too far away. Continuing to travel strongly through three-quarters in 1:10.78, the hickory-tough gelding, twice second in the GIII Steve Sexton Mile, but minus a graded victory, kept on keeping on and crossed the wire comfortably best. 'Rising Star' Hall of Fame (Gun Runner) was second ahead of Sierra Leone, who surely needed the run and was doing his best work through the line. The final time for the nine furlongs over a fast strip was a solid 1:48.10. Sales history: $15,000 Ylg '20 TTAYRL. Lifetime Record: 21-15-4-2. 20. By Jonny Turner Trainer-driver Bob Butt thinks Kourtney Kardash is made for the biggest staying test of her career. The five-year-old will be out to add to her stunning record on grass tracks when she lines up in the Whitestone Livestock Waimate Cup at Oamaru on Sunday (4.19pm). With her outstanding grass track stats and her excellent manners in recent standing starts there only looks to be one query for Kourtney Kardash to tick off. The mare will step up to race over 3000m for the first time, a distance Butt thinks she should thrive over. “She will love it,” the trainer-driver said. “She probably lacks an ounce of really high speed but staying is really her go.” “In her last start she was beaten for speed but she really kept going.” “Whereas her win before that at Rangiora she got around them early and she kept going, it was a pretty big run that.” In producing two strong South Island efforts, Kourtney Kardash has continued the excellent form she had produced in the north for her former trainer and owner Shane Butcher. Her recent southern efforts demonstrate how well she has settled into the Butt stable. “She is a lovely mare and she has been easy to train,” Butt said. “She loves the beach and loves the pool and she seemed to have settled in really well.” “She’d done a great job before she came down and she is just continuing on her form, really.” Butt is hopeful High Step can get her manners back in check in Sunday’s feature trot, the Interpaint Fillies and Mares Handicap Trot (5.23pm) after missing away in her last two starts. “It is a shame because she has been such a good beginner.” “Two starts ago at Addington it wasn’t her fault, but then last start she was a bit fresh around at the start and got it wrong.” “She has been working well and she would be a good chance if she is able to get away on Sunday.” View the full article
  21. Godolphin's Sovereignty (Into Mischief), a smashing winner of the GII Coolmore Fountain of Youth Stakes on seasonal debut Mar. 1, drew widest in a field of 10 and was made the 8-5 favorite on the morning line for the GI Curlin Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park on Mar. 29. Trained by Bill Mott, looking for his first victory in the Kentucky Derby stepping-stone, Sovereignty is a homebred son of Crowned (Bernardini), whose dam Mushka (Empire Maker) was a Grade II winner of the Demoiselle Stakes as a juvenile and added the GI Juddmonte Spinster Stakes for Mott in 2009. Sovereignty is the mount of jockey Junior Alvarado. Somewhat remarkably, Bob Baffert also lacks a win in the Florida Derby, and the Hall of Famer will try to right that wrong with Madaket Road (Quality Road) next weekend. A $650,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga graduate, the gray colt is winless in his two outings this season, but ran with credit when third to his Eclipse Award-winning stablemate Citizen Bull (Into Mischief) in the GIII Robert B. Lewis Stakes Feb. 1 ahead of a runner-up effort to Coal Battle (Coal Front) in the GII Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn three weeks later. Madaket Road is the 7-2 second choice on the morning line and will leave from the eight hole. Disruptor (Gun Runner), a $1.15-million Keeneland September purchase, gets the litmus test for trainer Todd Pletcher, who has saddled the last two winners of this race and seven out of the last 11. Fractionally disappointing when a money-burning third on seven-furlong debut on the Pegasus World Cup undercard Jan. 25, he put it all together last time to graduate by 9 1/4 lengths en route to 'TDN Rising Star' honors. The chestnut is drawn four and is pegged at 7-2 to begin the wagering. 22. Journalism (Curlin), who was the 5-1 favorite in Pool 5 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager which closed Mar. 16, and the well-related Baeza (McKinzie) each worked five furlongs Saturday morning ahead of their intended appearance in the GI Santa Anita Derby on Apr. 5. Journalism, a sensational first-up winner of the GII San Felipe Stakes Mar. 1, worked in the company of 2024 GI Kentucky Derby runner Endlessly (Oscar Performance) and stopped the clock in an easy 1:01.40 (18/41) under the watchful eye of trainer Michael McCarthy. “It was a maintenance work, looking to keep him in his routine,” McCarthy said. “I was very pleased with what I saw.” An $825,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling, Journalism is owned by a group including Bridlewood Farm, breeder Don Alberto Corp., Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Elayne Stables 5 LLC and Robert LaPenta. Baeza, the half-brother to Classic-winning full-brothers Mage (Good Magic) and Dornoch, went his five-eighths of a mile in a more leisurely 1:03.40. “Just keeping him on schedule,” said John Shirreffs of the colt, a $1.2-million Keeneland September acquistion. “He had a real big gallop two days ago and I didn't want to overdo it.” Baeza exits a 4 3/4-length victory in a one-mile maiden over the Santa Anita main track Feb. 14. Work of the Day from @santaanitapark—Endlessly (Outside), 1:01.20, and Journalism, 1:01.40, worked 5 Furlongs on March 22nd, 2025, for trainer @mwmracing. #SantaAnitaDerby pic.twitter.com/ERjISiOpiW — 1/ST TV (@Watch1ST) March 22, 2025 The post Journalism, Baeza Work Towards Santa Anita Derby appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 24. With two weeks remaining until the $30.5-million Dubai World Cup meeting at Meydan Racecourse, riding assignments for the American raiders are coming into focus. Perhaps the best chance for U.S. victory on the program, champion and recent G2 Riyadh Dirt Sprint hero Straight No Chaser (Speightster) will look for more desert riches in the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen with his regular rider John Velazquez back in the irons. The veteran reinsman's agent Kiaran McLaughlin also confirmed that Velazquez has the call aboard Il Miracolo (Gun Runner) for trainer Antonio Sano in the G1 Dubai World Cup and has also accepted the call on Little Vic (Practical Joke) for Juan Carlos Avila in the G2 Godolphin Mile. As reported in Saturday's TDN, Frankie Dettori will renew acquaintances with GI Malibu Stakes winner Raging Torrent (Maximus Mischief) in the Godolphin Mile and with Mixto (Good Magic) as he seeks what would be a record-setting fifth victory in the World Cup. Trainer Chief Stipe O'Neill confirmed Saturday that the connections of Katonah (Klimt) have elected to go with William Buick in the main event. The Norwegian-born rider guided Prince Bishop (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) to victory in the 2015 World Cup. Christophe Soumillion will take the ride on Isivunguvungu (SAf) (What a Winter {SAf}) in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint, trainer Graham Motion said on Saturday. A Belgian native, but French-based, Soumillon rode the 6-year-old on two occasions in South Africa in 2023, including a third in the Grade 1 Cape Flying Championship. Emisael Jaramillo took the 2019 Golden Shaheen and will look to double his account when he rides 2024 third-place finisher Nakatomi (Firing Line) for trainer Wesley Ward. The news was confirmed by Fergus Galvin, U.S. advisor to part-owner Qatar Racing. Paco Lopez was originally booked to partner with Steal Sunshine (Constitution) in the Godolphin Mile, but is unable to make the trip to Dubai. He will be replaced by leading Japanese jockey Christophe Lemaire, co-owner Carrie Brogden said on Saturday. Florent Geroux will be aboard GIII Gotham Stakes hero Flood Zone (Frosted) in the G2 UAE Derby and Hit Show (Candy Ride {Arg}), Wathnan Racing's Case Clay confirmed. Golden Shaheen aspirant Super Chow (Lord Nelson) will have Chantal Sutherland aboard for trainer Jorge Delgado and trainer Ken McPeek has yet to confirm a World Cup jockey for the newly invited Rattle N Roll (Connect). Joel Rosario, who rode the horse to victory in the G3 King's Cup and to a fifth in the G1 Saudi Cup, will be in New York for Wood Memorial day, his agent Ron Anderson said. . 25. 2nd-Tampa Bay Downs, $32,000, Msw, 3-22, 3yo, 1m 40y, 1:40.34, ft, 1 1/4 lengths. LORDSHIP (c, 3, Gun Runner–Flag Day, by Giant's Causeway), the 7-5 favorite in this unveiling, cost himself position at the break with an awkward beginning and was relegated to near last of the six-horse field. Able to save ground into the backstretch, he rated in fifth past the half in :46.70 before advancing with an outside bid around the far turn. Kept wide for the drive, the Triple Crown nominee closed nicely down the stretch to surge past late leader Three Percent (Audible) close to home and graduate on debut by 1 1/4 lengths. Flag Day, already responsible for this runner's full-brother in Hall of Fame, GSW, $322,960, is herself a half to MGSP Street Ready (More Than Ready). This is also the family of MGISW Diversify (Bellamy Road). Flag Day has a 2-year-old Constitution colt named Massachusetts who brought $450,000 at Keeneland September last year.
