Frankie Dettori has been forced to file for bankruptcy after failing to reach an agreement with HMRC over a long-running tax avoidance case. The Italian released a statement to confirm this latest development on Thursday. “For the last six-months, my advisors have been working with HMRC in an attempt to find a solution to my financial situation,” the statement read. “Regretfully, I will be filing for bankruptcy. “I am saddened and embarrassed by this outcome and would advise others to take a stronger rein over their financial matters. Bankruptcy is a major decision and its consequences will affect me for many years. “I am relieved to be drawing a line on this long-term matter, which enables me to reset and focus on my international riding career.” Dettori's name first came up in a legal battle with HMRC over his anonymity after using a “tax avoidance scheme” in December of 2024. His career voluntarily ended in Britain in October of 2023 and, instead of retiring, he moved to California to continue riding. A three-time champion jockey in Britain, he was ranked 13th by earnings in the U.S. in 2024, with 18 graded stakes wins highlighted by the victories of Beaute Cachee (Fr) (Literato {Fr}) in the GI Jenny Wiley Stakes, Newgate (Into Mischief) in the GI Santa Anita Handicap, and Raging Torrent (Maximus Mischief) in the GI Malibu Stakes. This term, he's already won a brace of Grade IIIs. There are seven horses by Justify in this year's sale that features a large representation of America-bred youngsters, with juveniles by Gun Runner, Not This Time, Kitten's Joy, Medaglia d'Oro, More Than Ready, Practical Joke, Tapit and more. Meanwhile, Cathedral, Dropshot, Gallant, Batal Youmzain, Carla Ridge, She's Perfect, Morena Queen, Rafale Design and Centrigrade have all shown a lot of quality on the racecourse and hold big-race entries. The OwnerView Webinar series for 2025 kicked off Mar. 11 with a discussion of accounting, legal and insurance considerations affecting Thoroughbred owners. Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView, was the moderator of a panel that included Chapman Hopkins, chair of Stoll Keenon Ogden's Equine Litigation group; Joe Daugherty, public accountant for Dean Dorton, leading their equine tax practice; and Mike Levy, founder of Muirfield Insurance. A discussion of equine accounting, including tax changes and the implications on Thoroughbred ownership, kicked off the webinar. “The two questions you need to ask is what kind of property are we dealing with and do I want to own it myself or do I want to own it with someone else?” replied Daugherty when discussing tax considerations for an owner buying a horse or a farm, and how that would be structured. Addressing the importance of accounting methods, Daugherty added: “I would say that most horse owners qualify to use the cash basis method. That's usually the preferred accounting method, because it accelerates deductions for income tax purposes.” Among the items discussed by Hopkins was what owners should be aware of as regards the legalities of becoming a horse owner. “The starting point for me, especially with any new clients, new owners, is getting into a mindset that the equine business really needs to be treated just like any other business,” Hopkins said. “If I could identify three things that I would keep at the forefront of my mind, they'd probably be contractual considerations, regulatory components and then just general liability.” Levy pointed out that mortality insurance is the most common form of equine insurance. He emphasized that personal umbrella policies do not cover equine-related claims, a point with which Hopkins concurred. The panel also discussed the void claim rule, which applies to every track that operates under the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act rules. “This is a very, very good rule. It encourages participation and it alleviates ambiguities or uncertainties, especially for people that are new in the game,” Levy said. Nine additional virtual panels are scheduled for 2024. The next session, entitled 'Owners First' takes place Apr. 8 at 2 p.m. ET. The full schedule can be found here. What Sha Tin Races Where Sha Tin Racecourse – Tai Po Rd, Sha Tin District, Hong Kong When Saturday, March 15, 2025 First Race 1pm HKT (4pm AEDT) Visit Dabble Sha Tin Racecourse is the destination for Hong Kong racing on Saturday afternoon, with a stacked 10-part program set for decision. The rail is in the C+3 position for the meeting, and although some rainfall is forecast to hit the course proper in the lead-up, punters can expect the Good 4 rating at the time of acceptances to remain unchanged for race day. The opening event is scheduled to get underway at 1pm HKT. Best Bet at Sha Tin: Sky Jewellery Sky Jewellery continues to impress in his debut Hong Kong season, claiming two wins from three starts, including a demolition of his Class 4 rivals at this course and distance on February 23. The Autumn Son gelding did it comfortably on that occasion, rounding them up from the rear of the field to stamp himself as a potential star on the rise. He drops 5kg stepping into Class 3 company, and with gate seven allowing Brenton Avdulla to smoke the pipe mid-field with cover, watch for Sky Jewellery to be putting in the big strides late to justify favouritism with horse racing bookmakers. Best Bet Race 10 – #7 Sky Jewellery (7) 3yo Gelding | T: John Size | J: Brenton Avdulla (56kg) Next Best at Sha Tin: Super Strong Kid Super Strong Kid ran into a smart one in the form of Justifying on debut and finished off best of the beaten brigade to suggest punters can follow him with confidence. He bombed the start before picking himself off the canvas, running slick time in the process. Matthew Chadwick will need to get the son of Brutal to jump with them this time around, but provided he’s within striking distance, Super Strong Kid must be considered a major player in this. Next Best Race 3 – #9 Super Strong Kid (4) 3yo Gelding | T: Manfred Man | J: Matthew Chadwick (58kg) Best Value at Sha Tin: Sunlight Power Sunlight Power was outmatched carrying a big weight (59kg) at this course and distance last time out but gets a terrific opportunity to turn the tables on some key rivals. He closed off nicely from the back-half of the field as Johannes Brahms got the upper hand in the shadows of the post, however, he never shirked the task to get within a length on the wire. Gate one allows Hugh Bowman to take closer order in the small field of nine, and provided the breaks fall his way, Sunlight Power will prove hard to hold out. Four horses have completed the Pago Pago–Golden-Golden Slipper double, with the most recent being Shinzo (2023). Originally run as the Pago Pago Quality under handicap conditions, the Pago Pago Stakes became a set weights race in 1985. The Pago Pago Stakes was upgraded to Group 2 in 1987 before reverting to Group 3 in 2017. Pago Pago, the 1963 Golden Slipper winner, was the first interstate-trained horse to win the race. Jumping from barrier 6, Clark ensured Anode couldn’t cross to the lead. Passing the 800m, Clark was in his preferred position, with Anode back in second. As they entered the straight, Clark extended his lead, holding off a late challenge from Anode, who closed in but fell short by a long neck. Coleman and Tyler Schiller finished third, 1.75 lengths behind, while $2.10 favourite Gatsby’s was fourth, 2.20 lengths from the winner. 2023: Shinzo enters Slipper calculations Team Coolmore has another runner heading into the 2023 Group 1 Golden Slipper, as Shinzo proved too good for the boys in the 2023 Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes. James McDonald elected to go back to last on the Chris Waller-trained Snitzel colt and it proved to be a winning move turning for home on a genuine tempo set by Introducing and Zulfiqar. Maharba made his way to NSW after winning the Talindert Stakes at Flemington and got the perfect run just in behind the speed to run on into second. Bases Loaded was as consistent as ever finding the minor money, while Introducing fell into fourth position after doing all the work up on speed. Shinzo was too good for them however, making his way from last to first. 2022: Rise Of The Masses clinches final Slipper spot Two-year-old colt Rise Of The Masses became the final horse to secure a start in the 2022 Golden Slipper after a strong on-pace victory in the 2022 Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill. The son of Russian Revolution was given a terrific ride by Tim Clark from barrier four, toughing it out to win by half a length in the 1200m event. High-class mare Coeur Volante (NZ) (Proisir) will be out to deliver an emotional Gr.1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) win for connections just over two weeks after the death of her popular trainer Michael Moroney. The Melbourne Cup-winning horseman died in his sleep last month after recently making a training comeback following a serious battle with illness. His training partner Glen Thompson will saddle up Coeur Volante in Saturday’s Rosehill feature and says the mare has continued to please the stable since her sweeping four-length win in last month’s Gr.2 Mannerism Stakes (1400m). “She has done very well. She is really handling her racing this time, which is good to see,” Thompson said. “I think the trip away to Queensland really toughened her up and hopefully she gets up there and settles in well and she is going to run a hell of a race. “We always thought she was a Group One horse and hopefully she shows that on Saturday.” Coeur Volante had a two-start preparation in Brisbane during last year’s winter carnival and was unplaced in both races. However, Thompson admitted the mare was impacted by the travel and that was his only concern ahead of her Sydney trip. “The only worry is how she copes with the travelling,” he said. “She struggled a bit last time and it has definitely toughened her up but she has got to go back and do it again. Whether she copes with that or not, we’ll find out on Saturday. “If she stays where she’s at at the moment, she will be competitive in whatever she runs in.” Fittingly, Kerrin McEvoy has been charged with the task of partnering Coeur Volante in the Coolmore Classic (1500m). McEvoy was a 20-year-old apprentice when he won the first of his three Melbourne Cups aboard the Moroney-trained Brew 25 years ago. Coeur Volante, who has drawn the inside gate, is a $9.50 chance for Saturday’s feature. Bred by Fairdale Stud, Coeur Volante is one of 21 stakes winners by Rich Hill Stud stallion Proisir. Out of the Testa Rossa mare Shanina, Coeur Volante was purchased by Paul Moroney Bloodstock in conjunction with Ballymore Stables for $90,000 out of the Prima Park draft during the Book 1 Yearling Sale at Karaka in 2022. She is the younger half-sister of stakes placed filly Hasstobemagic and comes from a family that includes multiple Australian Group Two winner Rose O’ War and outstanding race mare Savana City who included the Gr.1 AJC Oaks (2400m) amongst her eight career victories. Talented gelding Hasstobeawinner (NZ) (Vadamos) has lived up to his name this preparation and will be tested for the first time in Group company in Saturday’s Gr.2 Ultimate Mazda Japan Trophy (1600m) at Tauranga. The son of Vadamos had always shown promise and was rewarded for consistency with a lucrative prize in the Stella Artois 1500 Championship Final, an effort he only improved off to finish second behind the airborne El Vencedor in the Listed Fulton Family Stakes (1500m). In preparation for the Tauranga feature, Hasstobeawinner carried the top-weight at Taupo over 1400m and lost no admirers, firing into third while giving away nearly six kilograms to the winner, Channel Surfer. Robert Wellwood, who trains the five-year-old in partnership with Roger James, had plenty to praise in his most recent effort. “I thought it was a good run, he didn’t get all favours and carried 60 kilos,” he said. “To see him round off the way he did, after not enjoying the track all that much, we were very impressed. “His record right-handed is as good as anything, so we’re looking forward to seeing him go right-handed and up over a bit further. “We’ve targeted this race to some extent with them and we’ll get this out of the way before making any plans going further.” Joining Hasstobeawinner in the contest will be Dionysus (NZ) (Ocean Park), a Group Three-winning stayer resuming from a freshen-up. While Saturday’s distance may not be right up his alley, Wellwood and James have their eye on a bigger prize in a fortnight at Trentham. “He worked really nicely this week and the mile may be a tad sharp for him, but expect to see him making big bounds late,” Wellwood said. He’s hopefully going to go on to the Awapuni Gold Cup after this, and we’d love to see him get back to his best form for that race.” The stable had hoped to send three-year-old maideners Surprise Inside (NZ) (Per Incanto) and Hephaestus (NZ) (The Autumn Sun) their separate ways across the weekend, but barrier draws have determined the pair will both start at Pukekohe on Friday in the TAB 1600. A son of Per Incanto, Surprise Inside powered home into second last-start behind Ima Warrior, while Hephaestus produced a similar effort on debut, finishing a tidy fifth in a race won by Deadly Desire. “They are both nice horses, we thought we would see how they drew to split them up but they’ve drawn the exact same places in both,” Wellwood said. “We feel that Pukekohe is the better track for both of them (over Tauranga), it’s nice and roomy. It would be great to see them do something that could lead on to a nice race in the autumn.” Meanwhile, Wellwood and James are yet to determine the next course of action for their star mare Orchestral (NZ) (Savabeel), after she finished sixth in the Gr.1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m) on Champions Day. “We’re yet to decide on Orchestral, she was very disappointing early in the race and had been negative in her behaviour throughout the day, even travelling up in the truck,” Wellwood said. “Interestingly enough, she still ran the quickest last 800, 600 and 400 of the race, but you don’t get any cups for doing that. “We’ve given her a quiet week, changed a few things up and we’ll make a plan in the next week or so where we head with her.” View the full article

Expat Kiwi John Sargent is noted as a trainer of staying fillies and two of the Randwick conditioner’s leading Oaks hopefuls will be given the chance to showcase their wares this week. Stablemates Powers Of Opal (NZ) (Ocean Park) and Inevitable Truth (Fastnet Rock) both have the Gr.1 Australian Oaks (2400m) as their carnival goal but the pair will take different paths towards it. Powers Of Opal will have her next start in Saturday’s Gr.2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill before heading to the blue riband via the Gr.1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m). Inevitable Truth heads to the Gr.3 Kembla Grange Classic (1600m) on Friday, hoping to stake her credentials and emulate the feat of Sargent’s former smart mare Luvaluva, who won it in 2018. Runner-up in the Gr.1 VRC Oaks (2500m) Powers Of Opal ended up on an inferior section of the track when unplaced behind Lady Shenandoah first-up in the Gr.1 Surround Stakes (1400m) after making good headway between the 400m and 200m. Saturday’s race will be another stepping stone but Sargent predicts an improved performance. “On what I’m seeing in the last couple of weeks, she has definitely gone up a level,” Sargent said. “Hopefully you see it on Saturday and then she will really be in the thick of it in the Vinery and the Oaks. “She is still probably short of her best distance on Saturday but with Lady Shenandoah out and a couple of others, I’d like to see her hitting the line strongly.” Powers of Opal chased home star filly Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) in both the Gr.2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) and the VRC Oaks and Sargent is conscious that Powers Of Opal will need to continue to improve to foot it with her key rival in the Vinery and Oaks. “We will have to go up a level,” he said. “Let’s hope she doesn’t travel too well. She looks extraordinary and she has just carried on with how good she was in the spring so we will have to lift our game to take her on in the Vinery. “I think our filly can do that. She is on her home turf now, she doesn’t have to go far to race and once we get out in distance, let’s hope we can improve because Treasurethe Moment has been very impressive in Melbourne.” Sargent outlaid $130,000 to purchase Powers Of Opal at the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale from the draft of Curraghmore, and returned to the source to secure her yearling half-sister by Proisir for $700,000 in conjunction with Duncan Ramage and Spicer Thoroughbreds. Daylight Robbery (NZ) (Super Seth) has given owner-trainer Gavin Sharrock an exciting ride this season, but it has come to a premature end after the son of Super Seth sustained a muscle strain this week. Set to contest the Wanganui Insurance Brokers 2YO 1200 on Saturday, for which he was a $3 favourite, Daylight Robbery will now head to the spelling paddock in preparation for a three-year-old preparation. “He galloped really well on Tuesday and then yesterday (Wednesday) when we went to work him, he was a bit sore in the hindquarter, so he has obviously pulled a muscle,” said Sharrock, who owns the gelding in partnership with Cliff Erb. “It is gut-wrenching, he galloped so well on Tuesday, and I have never felt so happy with the horse and then the next day you are at the bottom of the heap.” Purchased for $10,500 out of Waikato Stud’s 2024 New Zealand Bloodstock Online Yearling Sale draft on Gavelhouse.com, Daylight Robbery went on to win one and finish runner-up in two of his first three starts before running seventh in the Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m) and a game fourth behind subsequent Group One winner Return To Conquer in the Gr.3 Matamata Slipper (1200m). Sharrock was looking forward to stepping him up over ground in the Gr.1 Courtesy Ford Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at the end of the month, believing his charge would appreciate the extra distance. “We have had a win and a couple of seconds, and in the big races he has been a little bit unlucky. He has been a really nice two-year-old,” Sharrock said. “I thought he had held third (in the Matamata Slipper) because he fought back again in the last bit, that is why I was looking forward to the Sires’ being 1400m instead of 1200m. “He was going out after the Sires’ anyway, but he will have to go out early now.” While pleased with Daylight Robbery’s juvenile performances, Sharrock believes his charge will benefit from time. “He will be a far better three-year-old,” he said. “What he did as a two-year-old was a bonus.” View the full article

You Say D’Orsay (NZ) (Under The Louvre) will continue his path towards next month’s Gr.3 Manco Easter Handicap (1600m) at Ellerslie when he heads to Tauranga on Saturday to contest the Stu Cundy Bayleys Country & Lifestyle 1400. The Under The Louvre four-year-old has finished fourth in his last two outings, including the $1 million Aotearoa Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie in January, and trainer Chris Wood believes his gelding can figure in the finish this weekend. “He is really good, I am really happy with him,” the Cambridge conditioner said. “We pulled him out last weekend when he drew the outside gate. I could see a little bit of pace in the race, so we decided to go to Saturday. “He has drawn okay (7), but he is an on-pace horse, he doesn’t have to lead but he can lead. “He is really bright. He has worked up well and he galloped well this (Thursday) morning, so I expect him to run a race. A kilo off his back will help and Ace (Lawson-Carroll, apprentice jockey) knows him quite well.” After Saturday’s run, Wood said his charge will likely have one more run before the Easter Handicap. Wood will also head to Tauranga with Noble Boy (NZ) (Redwood) and Radradra (NZ) (Derryn), who will contest the Larissa Reid Bayleys Whakatane Commercial 1600 and Snow Williams & Arun Mehan Bayleys Maiden (1600m) respectively. Both geldings finished runner-up in their last start outings, and Wood is hoping they can go one better on Saturday. “Noble Boy went well the other day, I thought he had won, but just got beaten by a nose,” Wood said. “He has come through that well. “I don’t normally back them up one week to the next, I do it the odd time, but he is a big, strong horse. He had a quiet gallop this (Thursday) morning and worked up well, his rider was very happy with him. “Radradra had a bone operation on his leg a year ago, which held him up for a while, he was out for quite a while and he has progressed nicely since then. “He went a good race the other day, he was entitled to win, he just didn’t quite pick up the leader. “He has had side winkers on and we have removed them and put blinkers on him. He galloped well with them on Tuesday and Thursday, so hopefully that is the necessary improvement. Stepping up to the mile should suit him too.” A day prior at Pukekohe, Wood will be represented by just the one runner – What A Yarn (NZ) (What’s The Story) in the Horizon By SkyCity 1400. “He went a good race the other day, he was only beaten 2.2 lengths at Taupo,” Wood said. “Sam (Spratt, jockey) said he couldn’t keep up early, they went quite hard early and she said he finished off well. “He has come through that super. Unfortunately, she (Spratt) has had to take another ride for a stable she always rides for, so we have gone for Ace and he is top weight. It is nice to drop back into a rating 60 race and that should be right up his alley.” Meanwhile, Wood has been pleased with the return of his promising two-year-old That’s Gold, who won his 800m trial at Ellerslie on Tuesday. The son of Lucky Vega had placed in two of his four starts in the spring, and finished fourth in the Listed Counties Challenge Stakes (1100m) at Pukekohe on November. He has enjoyed a break and is being set for a couple of starts over autumn before being prepared for a three-year-old spring preparation. “He has run four times as a two-year-old, I don’t normally run my two-year-olds that many times, but he coped with everything, had a break and has been gelded,” Wood said. “He had a trial at Ellerslie on Tuesday and won his heat nicely, albeit in a slow time. They walked up front and he only got running in the last 100m. “I had him down for the Sires’ Produce (Gr.1, 1400m), but I would have to cook him to get him there and I am not prepared to do that, so I will sort something else out a bit easier. “I will give him another run or two and I think he is a pretty smart horse who is up to good three-year-old company when he resumes in his three-year-old year.” View the full article

What Victorian Owners and Breeders Race Day Where Caulfield Racecourse – Gate 2, Station St, Caulfield East VIC 3145 When Saturday, March 15, 2025 First Race 12:15pm AEDT Visit Dabble Caulfield hosts a massive 10-race card this Saturday for Victorian Owners and Breeders Race Day. With a scorching top of 37 degrees forecast, an early start may be on the cards; regardless, the track will begin as a Good 4 and become a Good 3 at some point. The rail will be out 6m for the entire circuit, with the first race scheduled to jump at 12:15pm AEDT. The Showdown Tip: Mcgaw Mcgaw could not have done much more when winning his debut at Pakenham. In the small field of seven, the I Am Immortal progeny rounded up his rivals from the rear of the field and put 3.5 lengths on them over 1100m. The extra 100m in The Showdown (1200m) should suit him perfectly, and considering they will not go slowly out in front with such a lucrative payday on offer, the $1 million feature sets up perfectly for Mcgaw to thunder home late. The Showdown Race 8 – #5 Mcgaw (13) 2yo Gelding | T: Emma-Lee & David Browne | J: Damian Lane (58kg) Peter Young Stakes Tip: Zardozi The 2025 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) shapes as a race in two between Pride Of Jenni and Zardozi, but with race fitness on her side, the latter gets the verdict. Zardozi will only get better with racing this campaign, and the way she finished off over 1600m in the Blamey Stakes last time out suggests a win is near. Pride Of Jenni will look to run this at a breakneck tempo, but Zardozi has plenty of staying credentials and will be hard to hold out if she is within striking distance at the home turn. Peter Young Stakes Race 6 – #6 Zardozi (2) 4yo Mare | T: James Cummings | J: Jamie Melham (57kg) Best Bet at Caulfield: Bit Of Shoosh Bit Of Shoosh disposed of his rivals by 5.5 lengths on debut in what was Jamie Melham’s only ride at Kyneton on February 27. The son of Shamus Award was forced to travel wide without cover, and the way he ran clear of his rivals over 1454m suggests he is blessed with a fair bit of talent. Melham will have him settled with cover from barrier four, and barring any bad luck in the home straight, there’s no reason Bit Of Shoosh cannot handle the step up in class. Best Bet Race 5 – #6 Bit Of Shoosh (4) 3yo Gelding | T: Ben, Will & JD Hayes | J: Jamie Melham (58kg) Next Best at Caulfield: She’s Got Pizzazz She’s Got Pizzazz found the 1000m down the Flemington straight a touch too sharp when resuming, but up to the 1200m and back around the corner looks the right setup. The Zoustar filly was a 1400m Listed winner at this track before heading for a spell, so she will handle the occasion with no issue. Out of barrier five, Craig Williams will look to have her in clear air approaching the 200m mark, and with a strong finish, She’s Got Pizzazz looks hard to hold out. Next Best Race 7 – #3 She’s Got Pizzazz (5) 3yo Filly | T: Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman | J: Craig Williams (57kg) Best Value at Caulfield: Mostly Cloudy If Mostly Cloudy is anywhere near his best, he is well worth an each-way ticket in the opener. The six-year-old gelding takes on $1.50 favourite Revelare, who is set to tackle 2400m for the first time, while this bloke is already a winner up to 3300m overseas. He wasn’t beaten by much in the Wangaratta Cup (2000m) first-up since his Melbourne Cup run, and with a 2.5kg weight drop and a strong turn of foot for a stayer, punters could do worse than take the $11 on offer with top racing bookmakers. Best Value Race 1 – #2 Mostly Cloudy (5) 6yo Gelding | T: Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young | J: Ethan Brown (57.5kg) Saturday quaddie tips for Caulfield Caulfield quadrella selections March 15, 2025 3-9-11 3-5-9-11-13 2-3-4-10 2-6-9-18 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article

Trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, Drifting kicked off her career with an easy win at Hawkesbury last month and then showed her talent with a good second to Bold Bastille in the Listed VRC Furphy Stakes at Flemington on March 2. Returned to Sydney and stepping up to 1200m for the first time, Drifting enjoyed a good run in transit for Tom Sherry and was strong to the line winning by more than a length. 2023: Steel City smacks rivals Steel City punched her ticket to the Golden Slipper in emphatic fashion, destroying her rivals in the 2023 Magic Night Stakes. It was redemption for favourite backers as Steel City never got clear running in the 2023 Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes. Jockey Regan Bayliss took all lucky out of the equation this time electing to press forward from the inside barrier and led them along at a steady tempo. Once asked for an effort, Steel City obliged, putting them to bed stylishly to score a 2.7 length win on the line. 2022: She’s Extreme relishes wet deck She’s Extreme was the final filly to book her spot in the 2022 $5 million Golden Slipper after a 1.44-length win in the Group 3 Magic Night Stakes at Rosehill. The Anthony Cummings-trained two-year-old went into the 1200m event as a drifting $3.30 chance with online bookmakers, proving too tough for Magic Carpet and Swift Sweet. Ridden by Tommy Berry, the daughter of Extreme Choice settled in the back half of the field and run on well to prove too strong in the heavy conditions. What Ascot races Where Ascot Racecourse – 71 Grandstand Rd, Ascot WA 6104 When Saturday, March 15, 2025 First Race 12:29pm AWST Visit Dabble The Listed Sheila Gwynne Classic will headline the nine-race card at Ascot on Saturday afternoon, where the first event is scheduled to jump at 12:29pm AWST. With perfect weather predicted in the lead-up to the meeting, the track is expected to remain in the Good 4 rating that was posted at acceptances. The rail will be in its true position for the entire circuit. Sheila Gwynne Classic tip: Bonjoy Bonjoy is clearly the horse to beat in the feature race of the day, following three wins from four starts this time in. After claiming a strong win over 1600m at this track last start, Jason Miller has given this five-year-old mare a six-week freshen before dropping back in trip to 1400m. Barring bad luck, Bonjoy will prove too good for her rivals, and the +200 on offer with horse racing bookmakers is a great price. Sheila Gwynne Classic Race 8 – #1 Bonjoy (5) 5yo Mare | T: Jason Miller | J: Clint Johnston-Porter (58.5kg) Best Bet at Ascot: Kay Tee Why Two talented three-year-olds will clash in the opening event of the day, and Kay Tee Why appears to get the right conditions to bounce off his ultra-impressive maiden victory. The Adam Durrant-trained gelding settled at the back of a small field over 1000m at this track before unleashing with a brilliant turn of foot to claim a 1.7-length win. With his main rival expected to be held up on the fence, Kay Tee Why can stay in clear air and finish over the top of his rivals once again. Best Bet Race 1 – #3 Kay Tee Why (7) 3yo Gelding | T: Adam Durrant | J: William Pike (56kg) Next Best at Ascot: Trio Grant & Alana Williams will be hoping for an ounce of luck for Trio, who was held up in between and behind tiring horses at Pinjarra last start. The son of Maschino stormed home down the outside of runners in the final 150m to get within 3.6 lengths from the winner in ninth place. After drawing barrier nine, William Pike can settle worse than midfield off the fence, and if he gets clear air from the 400m mark, Trio will be finishing off strongly. Next Best Race 7 – #6 Trio (9) 4yo Gelding | T: Grant & Alana Williams | J: William Pike (57kg) Best Value at Ascot: Capre Omnia Capre Omnia has been a model of consistency in recent starts, finishing in the placings in his last six, including two wins. The Dylan Bairstow-trained galloper was held up slightly behind the tiring leaders before flashing late to finish second behind Rocking Gem at this track and trip. Dropping back in grade is expected to suit Capre Omnia, and if he produces a similar effort, he can record another win at a nice price with BlondeBet. Best Value Race 4 – #1 Capre Omnia (7) 5yo Gelding | T: Dylan Bairstow | J: Jarrad Noske (60kg) Saturday quaddie tips for Ascot races Ascot quadrella selections Saturday, March 15, 2025 2-4-5-6 2-4-6-7 1-2-8 1-5-6-10 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article

What Coolmore Classic Day 2025 Where Rosehill Gardens Racecourse When Saturday, March 15, 2025 First Race 12:30pm AEDT Visit Dabble Rosehill Gardens Racecourse is the destination for Group 1 action on Saturday afternoon, with the $1 million Coolmore Classic (1500m) headlining a bumper 10-part program. The fillies and mares feature has attracted a quality field of 14, and with a stacked undercard surrounding the event, including the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) and Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m), punters can expect a tremendous afternoon of racing. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit, and although the track is rated a Soft 6 at the time of acceptances, an upgrade to the Good range appears imminent thanks to some drying conditions forecast leading into the weekend. The opening event is scheduled to get underway at 12:30pm AEDT. Race 1: BM72 Midway Handicap (1200m) The dartboard may be required in the opening event of the program, with a stack of chances in this BM72 Midway Handicap. So Good So Cool gets the nod, however, and represents good each-way value with horse racing bookmakers after closing on the heels of key rival Tenderize in back-to-back starts. He gets a genuine tempo engaged this time to be chiming in late, and provided Chad Schofield can slot in for cover from gate six, watch for this guy to be flashing home in the concluding stages. Selections: 8 SO GOOD SO COOL 11 SMILING PROPHET 5 THE EXTREME CAT 1 SALISANO Race 2: BM78 Handicap (1900m) King Of Thunder appears suited stepping out in trip second-up in the campaign after an eye-catching effort returning at Warwick Farm on March 5. The son of Tivaci simply couldn’t match motors with his rivals over the 1400m on that occasion, with the lightly raced three-year-old gelding only building into his work in the final furlong. He was a genuine Group 1 VRC Derby (2500m) contender at the end of last preparation for good reason, and with Zac Lloyd set to gain the run of the race from stall one, watch King Of Thunder to be barrelling over the top to justify favouritism with Neds. Selections: 9 KING OF THUNDER 11 HURSTVILLE ZAGREB 1 LINCOLN ROCKS 5 FATHER’S DAY Next Best Race 2 – #9 King Of Thunder (1) 3yo Gelding | T: John O’Shea & Tom Charlton | J: Zac Lloyd (56kg) Race 3: Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) The Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) is the last chance for the two-year-old colts & geldings to book their ticket to next Saturday’s Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m). West Of Swindon gets the verdict after a good runner-up performance behind Beiwacht in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on February 22, where the son of Wootton Bassett was unsuited by the sit-and-sprint conditions over the 1100m. Stepping out to the 1200m for the first time should be ideal, and with the boys likely to tick-over some strong sectionals, West Of Swindon should get every chance to charge over the top. Selections: 1 WEST OF SWINDON 4 SKYHOOK 3 EXTRACTOR 7 KILMAN Pago Pago Stakes Race 3 – #1 West Of Swindon (4) 2yo Colt | T: Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes | J: Tyler Schiller (55.5kg) Race 4: Group 3 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) It’s the girls turn to step out in the Group 3 Magic Night Stakes (1200m), where the John O’Shea & Tom Charlton-trained Artistic Venture appears hard to hold out. She was arguably a good thing licked in her latest outing in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on March 1, with the Trapeze Artist filly attempting to squeeze through a gap that simply never came. James McDonald is a booking that shows intent from the stable, and although Artistic Venture will have to overcome gate 14, she possesses the quality to get the job done. Selections: 2 ARTISTIC VENTURE 5 STRADA VARENNA 4 KARINSKA 10 CUSTOM Magic Night Stakes Race 4 – #2 Artistic Venture (14) 2yo Filly | T: John O’Shea & Tom Charlton | J: James McDonald (55.5kg) Race 5: Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) Vauban makes his Sydney debut after being transferred to the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott barn and appears supremely placed in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m). The former Melbourne Cup favourite has been disappointing in his two Australian starts prior to his permanent arrival; however, he seems to be acclimatizing well to his new conditions, hitting the line well recent barrier trial at Randwick on February 24. He’s got tactical versatility and can head forward under Tim Clark from gate four, and provided Vauban can replicate his peak rating first-up, the $5 with Picklebet is a fair price to find out. She was a Group 2 winner in New Zealand before making her way across the Tasman, and the daughter of Vadamos appears to be relishing her stay, cruising through the wire in a recent barrier trial at Warwick Farm on March 3. Zac Lloyd takes the reins and should get every chance to land in a handy position from barrier four, and while stable companions Declichy Boulevard and Lazzura have the fitness edge, Real Class warrants plenty of respect in the 2025 Phar Lap Stakes. Selections: 10 REAL CLASS 12 DECLICHY BOULEVARD 9 LAZZURA 1 WONDER BOY Phar Lap Stakes Race 6 – #10 Real Class (4) 3yo Filly | T: Chris Waller | J: Zac Lloyd (54.5kg) Race 7: Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) Pisanello appears to be the horse on the rise heading into the Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m). The son of Ribchester claimed a hat-trick of wins last preparation, including an ultra-impressive half-length win over a 1000m at Kembla Grange on November 23 where he smashed the clock before being sent to the paddock. He gets in here on the minimum 53kg, and although Zac Lloyd may need some luck slotting in from barrier eight, expect Pisanello to be barrelling over the top to make it four wins on the trot. The son of Savabeel was given a glorified barrier trial first-up in the Listed Abell Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on February 28, with the five-year-old settling last before showing a nice turn of speed in the final furlong. Bailey Wheeler should land in a stalking position with cover throughout from stall seven, and provided they tick over some modest sectionals in the middle stages, Von Hauke will be there to swoop at a monster price. Herbert will contest Saturday’s Group 2 Japan Trophy (1600m) at Tauranga. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) In-form four-year-old Herbert will end an already lucrative campaign at Tauranga on Saturday before a break, with plans to travel further afield later in the year. The John Wheeler-prepared representative will shoot for four wins on the bounce in the Group 2 Japan Trophy (1600m) to draw to a close a preparation that has seen him justify his trainer’s belief. Herbert has recently been successful at Wanganui and Matamata and in between times, claimed the thick end of the stake on his home track at New Plymouth in the Group 3 Taranaki Cup (1800m). This weekend’s northern venture will also provide the gelding with a right-handed experience that will stand him in good stead for future options. “He’ll go out after Saturday, everybody thinks I’ll take him to Brisbane, but he’ll have had his grand finals,” Wheeler said. “I’ll give him a spell and he’ll probably go to Sydney or Melbourne in the spring. “That’s the main reason I’m starting at Tauranga, they go the opposite way around and that gives options later on. “I was going to start in the Awapuni Gold Cup (Group 2, 2100m), but that’s at Trentham and for some obscure reason he’s never gone any good there. He’s only beaten one horse in four starts there.” Herbert is raced by Wheeler with former Taranaki Racing chief executive Carey Hobbs and another long-time friend Dennis Hunt. “Carey bought the mare for $900 on Gavelhouse with the foal at foot by Sweet Orange, he’s a lovely horse so he’s a real bargain,” Wheeler said. “Dennis is a mate of mine who had a building business in Australia, he’s a Kiwi but was there for 30 years or so. “He came home about four years ago, we’ve been close friends for 40 years.” Wheeler has long held a high opinion of Herbert and knew time would be the key to the horse fulfilling his potential. “Without gloating or anything, I said to Carey this is definitely a Group horse but we’ve had to get him to race properly and we’ve spent quite a bit of time and a few starts to get there,” he said. Herbert also rekindles memories of Wheeler’s former star galloper and Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) winner Poetic Prince. “He’s nowhere near as good as Poetic Prince, but he’s very much like him with a high cruising speed and, with time, he’s racing well now,” he said. What QTIS Jewel Day 2025 Where Gold Coast Turf Club – Racecourse Dr, Bundall QLD 4217 When Saturday, March 15, 2025 First Race 2:49pm AEST Visit Dabble Following the postponement of the meeting last Saturday, the Gold Coast Turf Club will host its annual QTIS Jewel Raceday this Saturday evening. Although a lot of rain has fallen in Queensland over the last week, the track is expected to improve from the Heavy 8 rating into the Soft range by raceday. The rail will be in its true position for the entire circuit, with the first race scheduled to jump at 2:49pm AEST. QTIS Jewel 2YO Tip: Grafterburners Grafterburners was an eye-catcher in the Inglis Millennium at Randwick last start when the Kelly Schweida-trained colt weaved through the pack to finish in fourth place. The son of Graff possesses a booming turn of foot, and after racing over 1000m and 1100m in most of his starts, a rise to 1200m will suit. With a lot of speed expected, Cejay Graham can settle Grafterburners worse than midfield before letting him rip in the final 300m to have the last crack at the leaders. QTIS Jewel 2YO Race 6 – #1 Grafterburners (16) 2yo Colt | T: Kelly Schweida | J: Cejay Graham (57kg) QTIS Jewel 3YO Tip: Mr Bubbaluski In what looks to be an even QTIS Jewel 3YO contest, the +2200 on offer with Dabble is a great price for the Jack Bruce-trained Mr Bubbaluski. This son of Encryption is yet to win on turf, but he has shown a stack of ability in his three placings on all track conditions. Damien Thornton can settle closer to the speed from barrier three, and if he can find a back to follow around the home turn, Mr Bubbaluski’s turn of foot will give him every chance to record his second win. QTIS Jewel 3YO Race 7 – #7 Mr Bubbaluski (3) 3yo Gelding | T: Jack Bruce | J: Damien Thornton (57kg) Best Bet at Gold Coast: Piastri Ciaron Maher will send Piastri to Queensland for the first time in his career off a 27-week spell, where he will compete in the last race of the evening. The son of Choisir owns an impressive record through nine starts, recording four wins and a placing, with all of his wins coming on Soft ground. With the aid of Cody Collis’ 2kg claim, a Soft track, and barrier three, Piastri has found the perfect race to resume with a victory. Best Bet Race 10 – #2 Piastri (3) 4yo Gelding | T: Ciaron Maher | J: Cody Collis (a2) (61kg) Next Best at Gold Coast: Ready For Anything Ready For Anything appears to be crying out for 1400m and a softer track after finishing off strongly over 1200m in his last three starts. The Matthew Dunn-prepared galloper settled at the back of the field at Doomben last start before stroming home down the outside of the field to finish in sixth place. The son of Better Than Ready will appreciate the drop in weight to 55kg, and if Andrew Mallyon can settle closer to the speed, Ready For Anything will make his presence felt late. Amelia’s Jewel winning the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes. Photo: Bradleyphotos.com.au Group 1-winning mare Amelia’s Jewel will face a challenging task in this Saturday’s Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m), needing to defy recent history to secure victory. The daughter of Siyouni will carry 58 kilograms, with no horse having won the Coolmore with more than 57 kilograms since Sunline’s dual victories in 2000 and 2002 under 60 kilograms. “She will be giving weight away to some nice up-and-coming fillies and mares, it’s never easy to carry top weight, but she’s certainly the class horse of the field, and it’s nice to be going there off the back of a win,” said co-trainer Annabel Neasham who trains in partnership with Rob Archibald. Josh Parr will take over the ride on Amelia’s Jewel, following James McDonald’s successful first-up victory in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) on March 1. “We’ve had a bit of luck with him on the brother Bosustow, so Peter Walsh is happy to have Josh on. He came and galloped her (Tuesday), and he’s looking forward to partnering her,” Neasham added. “She’s not normally a leader, but they gifted her the lead the other day. Not sure they’ll do the same again. It’s all tempo-related, just ride her where she’s happy. “She’s got a great turn of foot. She ended up being ridden closer with the blinkers on at the end of last prep down in Melbourne; we’ve left them off for now. “The main thing is just having her in her rhythm.” Amelia’s Jewel is marked a $6 chance with Dabble for Saturday’s Coolmore Classic. By Dave Di Somma, Harness News Desk Dating back to the first race in 1908 no horse has a better record in the Group 1 Fred Shaw Memorial New Zealand Trotting Championships than Muscle Mountain. Heading into Friday’s edition of the race at Addington, the Greg and Nine Hope-trained star is vying for his fourth win in five years, with Sundees Son breaking his winning run with a race record 3:10.4 in 2022. That time is still the New Zealand trotting record (2600m – Mobile). Muscle Mountain is the only trotter to have won the race three times. Overall he has won 35 from 61 and is currently at $974,884 in career earnings. If he wins on Friday he’ll earn another $55,500, pushing him into millionaire status. But the eight-year-old is up against it. Drawn on the second row he is a $4.50 second favourite with the clear top pick being rising star Bet N Win ($1.50). Muscle Mountain will be one of three Hope runners in the feature along with Midnight Dash ($15) and Mr Love ($61). Midnight Dash will be driven by Ricky May. He has won the Championship a record six times, jointly held with Bob Young from 1947 to 1969. There have been a few two-time winners of the race including back-to-back winners Speeding Spur (2018-2019), Stylish Monarch (2010-11), David Moss (1993 – 94), Nigel Craig (1977-78), Gold Horizon (1952-53) and Aerial Scott (1947-48). One of the most memorable races was in 1984 when Basil Dean, driven by Kerry O’Reilly, produced one of the great trotting performances in this country. He cut out the 2600 metres in a then world record 3:15.3. It broke his own national record by nearly five seconds and was also faster than the New Zealand pacers’ record at the time. That was 3:15.4 held jointly by Steel Jaw and Bonnie’s Chance. Īnitially the race was held over 3200 metres but changed to 2600 metres in 1977. It has had various names over the years including the NZ Hambletonian Handicap from 1950 to 1965. There were no races in 1938 and 1951, with it being held twice in 1951. Interestingly a trotter called Lazarus won the race in 1925. According to HRNZ records he won six from 35 starts. Friday’s Fred Shaw Memorial NZ Championships will go at 8.24pm To place a bet on the race click here $1m barrier close too for Queen Elida By Adam Hamilton Star Kiwi-bred trotting mare Queen Elida will return home to chase some history. The Brent Lilley-trained seven-year-old is on the verge of becoming just the second trotting mare in Australasian history to top $A1 million in prize money. But an even bigger target awaits. Queen Elida, who will be retired in May, still has the time and opportunities to overtake former Kiwi glamour trotter One Over Kenny ($A1,060,394) as the richest trotting mare of all time. It would keep the record in the family, so to speak, with Queen Elida’s granddam, Nice One Kenny, being a sister to One Over Kenny. So far, Queen Elida’s 82 starts have netted 37 wins, 31 placings and earnings of $A982,295. She can take that to $A995,020 with victory in the second race at Melton on Saturday night where she is a $2.40 favourite. A week later Queen Elida will tackle the $60,000 Group 1 Sumthingaboutmaori Mares’ Free-For-All at Melton. It will be a big surprise if she doesn’t top the $A1 million over the next two weeks. After the Sumthingaboutmaori, Queen Elida will leave Lilley’s stables for the last time for two major NZ races and then retirement back in NZ. The first target is the $NZ600,000 TAB Trot at Cambridge on April 4, a race Queen Elida ran third in behind Just Believe and Callmethebreeze last year. Her final race will be the $NZ200,000 Group 1 Rowe Cup at Auckland’s Alexandra Park on May 2. “She might finish-up the richest (trotting) mare of all-time and it would be fitting. She’s been a star since her juvenile days and taking on the boys in so many of the biggest races,” Lilley said. “It’ll be a sentimental trip back to NZ with her, knowing we’ll be farewelling her from the stable after so long.” More immediately, Lilley is brimming with confidence going into Saturday night. “She hasn’t been the easiest mare to train at times with her feet and, more recently, some steering problems, but we had some vet work done after the (Sydney) Inter Dominion late last year and the signs are great,” he said. “Chris (Alford, driver) said she felt like the mare of old when she won the other night and she seems great at home. “This looks a really nice race for her despite the back row and then she gets to take on the girls only the week after. “The signs are she’ll be going out on top of her game and we’re thrilled about that.” Queen Elida already boasts seven Group 1 wins, along with thirds in the 2022 and 2023 Inter Dominion finals, along with last year’s third in the TAB Trot. Skyhook. Photo: Bradleyphotos.com.au Co-trainer Sterling Alexiou has acknowledged that Skyhook will need to win Saturday’s Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill to secure a spot in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) back at the course on March 22. The Written Tycoon colt, who finished a narrow 0.2 lengths behind Rivellino in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m), was unlucky not to win the race, according to Alexiou. He is hopeful for better luck this weekend. “If he’d have got that run when it was there, prior to Adam (Hyeronimus on Shaggy) rolling in, I suspect he wins that race nine times out of ten,” Alexiou told Racing NSW. “For a horse that had had one start leading into that and one trial, he lost his momentum and balance and picked himself up and regained composure and still finished off as well as anything in the race, it augurs well for a handy future.” “We were hoping going into the Skyline the other day we wouldn’t have to be in the position we are now. He’s a young, inexperienced horse who improves every time he steps out and he’s always shown a good deal of ability. “I imagine from a decent barrier he’s going to go a long way to getting the run of the race. “If he can continue to progress as we expect he should be very hard to beat.” Skyhook is currently the $3.80 second favourite with horse racing bookmakers for Saturday’s Pago Pago Stakes.
