Breeders and horsemen aiming to fight Florida's decoupling bills launched the Thoroughbred Racing Initiative (TRI) Tuesday, billed as “an industry collaboration created to fight for live horse racing in Florida and elsewhere in the United States,” according to a release from the new organization. Thayer Communications & Consulting's Damon Thayer, a 22-year veteran of the Kentucky State Senate and Majority Floor Leader for 12 years, has been picked as senior adviser of the group. Decoupling has been an issue at the forefront of the sport for the past month, when representatives of The Stronach Group (TSG) stunned the industry in a closed-door meeting, saying TSG could guarantee racing at Gulfstream Park only through 2028 if a proposed bill to decouple Thoroughbred horseracing from casino licenses passes the state legislature. “Thoroughbred racing in Florida is under attack,” said TRI president and Ocala Stud general manager David O'Farrell. “The bills filed in the Florida legislature threaten the future of live racing, breeding, and our 33,500 jobs and $3.24 billion economic impact. This isn't just a Florida issue; the ripple effects will impact racing and breeding nationwide. For decades, Florida legislators have protected the Thoroughbred industry, but this bill prioritizes corporate interests over horsemen, breeders, and our industry's huge agri-business and tourism contributions. We must take a stand now to ensure Thoroughbred racing has a future.” The TRI stated an immediate mission of bringing the Thoroughbred industry together, providing funding and other resources to defeat anti-racing and breeding legislation in the Florida House of Representatives (HB 105) and Senate (SB 408). Those bills would allow Gulfstream Park to keep its gaming licenses without the current mandate that it also conduct live racing. HB 105 was amended to let Tampa Bay Downs maintain its card club without live racing, although Tampa Bay issued a statement stressing its commitment to horse racing and saying it did not initiate the bill amendment. Founded by O'Farrell, TRI vice president and owner-breeder Jon Green of DJ Stable, and Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse, the TRI already has a website, which can be found at thoroughbredracinginitiative.com. Dr. Barry Eisaman of Eisaman Equine also is a founding member, while Aron Wellman of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners has also joined the board. The TRI also is collaborating with the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. (OBS); Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association (FTBOA); the National Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association (NHBPA), representing about 30,000 Thoroughbred owners and trainers throughout North America; its Tampa Bay HBPA affiliate; and the Florida Thoroughbred Horsemen, representing owners and trainers at Gulfstream Park. The FTBOA, which has battled Florida decoupling measures over the years, began aggressively lobbying against HB 105/SB 408 since the bills were filed. That includes working closely with the National HBPA, which views decoupling as a national issue. “When done right, every dollar that a state invests in an industry such as Thoroughbred racing and breeding's agri-business is repaid many times over,” said Thayer. “The Florida legislature has understood that and been a terrific steward of its horse industry. TRI's core mission is to keep it that way. We cannot afford to lose Florida's storied Thoroughbred industry. “We're not asking lawmakers for subsidies. We're asking for legislatures to understand that investing in the Thoroughbred industry is no different than investing to keep and grow other labor-intensive industries that return so much in jobs and economic impact benefitting the entire state. This is similar to the situation we faced in Kentucky less than five years ago, and I am happy to assist my Florida friends in this effort.” O'Farrell said TRI will make sure legislators and the public hear the Florida horse industry's story. “While Florida is our immediate focus, TRI could get involved in other states where live racing is under siege,” said O'Farrell. “Thoroughbred racing and breeding throughout North America is an ecosystem. While Florida is a linchpin, we need the other jurisdictions of all sizes for the industry to prosper. We are going to do our part to fight for the industry and sport we all love, and we invite every stakeholder to join us.” FTBOA CEO Lonny Powell added, “FTBOA is pleased and excited to see our friends with the TRI come on board to join our fight to oppose decoupling while continuing live Thoroughbred racing in Florida. They are colleagues who have a deep passion for the Industry as well as having skin in the game. “They now join a team that includes the official horsemen's groups for both Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs, plus OBS and the National HBPA along with ourselves. Okay, so possibly Magnitude (Not This Time) won't ever do anything quite like that again. But let's enjoy the moment, at least, and relish the sheer theater of his GII Risen Star performance–much, for instance, as people did the astounding sophomore debut of Dr. Carter in 1984. He had won two of seven previous starts; Magnitude, two of six. But even though so unpressured that he won by 17 lengths, Dr. Carter equalled the Hialeah track record. Their trainer John Veitch declared him better than Alydar. The stage was set for a Flamingo Stakes showdown with Devil's Bag, the champion juvenile lately syndicated for $36 million. Typical of this game, however, both were beaten–Devil's Bag folding for the only time in his life, and Dr. Carter failing to wear down Time for a Change by a neck. Their collective fortunes thereafter remind us to take things one day at a time, with Magnitude as with every other horse. All three ended up missing the Derby, Dr. Carter and Time for a Change with a virus and Devil's Bag with injury. (And of course, by Tuesday morning, after this piece was written, the news had broken that Magnitude was off the Triple Crown trail and will undergo surgery for a chip in his ankle). At stud, Devil's Bag didn't really live up to his valuation and Time for a Change owed his reputation largely to Fly So Free. Dr. Carter, albeit managing a Grade I win at four, proved such a disappointing stallion that he was soon exported to Brazil. The son of Caro did leave behind two daughters of note, however. One, though unraced, became dam of that fast horse Lost in the Fog (Lost Soldier). The other, Belle Nuit, a half-sister to dual Grade I scorer Ms. Eloise (Nasty and Bold), won five of 23 starts, including a turf stakes at Aqueduct, before becoming a rather better producer. One daughter, by Belong to Me, won three graded stakes on dirt and another on turf, but Belle Nuit's standout was Octave, runner-up in four elite races–including the GI Kentucky Oaks won by Rags to Riches–before gaining overdue reward in the GI Mother Goose and GI Coaching Club American Oaks. After bowing out in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff, beaten two necks in the Monmouth mire, Octave shipped to Fasig-Tipton where she was sold for $4 million to Darley. There was some controversy at the time, the Coolmore team being under the impression that their equivalent bid had been recognized. For most of the time since, they can't have felt much regret. Though Octave was given covers commensurate with her cost, overall her progeny has tended not to stand much racing. An exception was Portamento (Ire) (Shamardal), a group-placed sprinter in Britain and Dubai, while her son Incognito (A.P. Indy) lasted well enough to run fourth in the GI Belmont Stakes, albeit never ran again. Zingarelli (Ire) (Bernardini) didn't make the starting gate until he was four, winning both starts impressively before disappearing again, this time for good, while his full-sister, Rockadelic, was culled by Godolphin for €75,000 as an unraced 3-year-old at the 2017 Goffs February Sale. She subsequently made a single start, tailed off at Delaware Park, before being sent to More Than Ready and sold for $180,000 at the Keeneland November Sale. Her purchaser immediately redeemed that investment when the filly she was carrying made $280,000 as a yearling. Two further visits to More Than Ready proved somewhat less lucrative, however, and the mare was moved on for $140,000 back at the November Sale in 2021. She was in foal to Not This Time, whose fee had just been raised to $40,000 from $12,500 after his explosive freshman campaign. Once again, her buyer made an immediate profit, selling the resulting colt as a weanling for $310,000 to FMQ Stables, but sent Rockadelic through as the very next hip, in foal to McKinzie, and bade her farewell for $110,000 to Freddie Bloodstock. The Not This Time colt was pinhooked in the same ring the following September, bringing a nice profit at $450,000 from Winchell Thoroughbreds. And his name, of course, is Magnitude. Safe to say that there's plenty of excitement in the Freddie Bloodstock camp now. The docket for Rockadelic was signed by Aisling Duignan on behalf of her son Freddie and his partners, and the mare is still only 11. Magnitude is also a potential win for Harris Farms, who bought a More Than Ready half-sister, in foal to Omaha Beach, at Keeneland last November for $45,000, while Legacy Ranch gave the same sum for Rockadelic's unraced half-sister by Frosted at Fasig-Tipton last February. They will all be hoping that Magnitude, from here, proves more Dr. Fager than Dr. Carter! Bernardini's Daughters Stamping the Classic Crop It feels incredible that Magnitude should belong to Not This Time's first crop conceived even at $40,000, with his incoming juveniles still sired at no more than $45,000. Seven Grade I winners to date, then, at no more than $15,000! True, not everyone believes that upgraded mares automatically create a corresponding surge in results, but the 2025 market will surely respond to Not This Time's first yearlings as a six-figure cover. The spring when he sired Magnitude was also the one, poignantly, when he passed Bernardini coming down the fee stairwell. Rockadelic's sire, who died that summer, was cut to $35,000 for what proved to be his final season. Rockadelic, while herself an in-house production, was conceived when Bernardini was charging his peak rate of $150,000. But every week brings another rebuke to those who somehow got it into their heads that a horse so accomplished, and beautiful, could ever become unfashionable. La Cara | SV Photography Magnitude is the 99th stakes winner out of a Bernardini mare, who seem to make headlines weekly. A week before Magnitude, it was his 2017 daughter, Cara Caterina, putting La Cara (Street Sense) on the Oaks trail in the Suncoast Stakes. The previous day, his 2015 daughter Terminology was represented by the clock-melting 'TDN Rising Star' Colloquial (Vekoma). Other sophomores with Classic potential out of Bernardini mares include dual Grade I winner Chancer McPatrick, whose dam Bernadreamy emerged from the same crop as Rockadelic; Sovereignty, whose dam Crowned was born the previous year, 11 days after the mother of 'TDN Rising Star' Rapture. And of course, champion Immersive (Nyquist), though sadly off the Classic trail, is out of Bernardini's 2012 daughter Gap Year. Veteran Trainers Drawing on Venerable Bloodlines There's plainly something meaningful, however elusive, in the concept of a “broodmare sire.” But that doesn't alter the fact that many of the most expensive mares at the breeding stock sales, every year, are by left-field sires of minimal commercial clout. Big Brown is hardly a Bernardini, in the sphere, yet his daughter Puca continues to make her $2.9-million purchase by John Stewart at the 2023 Keeneland November Sale look a bargain. With Dornoch (Good Magic) having since joined brother Mage as a Classic winner, Puca's latest sophomore Baeza (McKinzie) is eyeing the GI Santa Anita Derby after breaking his maiden in grand style last week. Baeza | Benoit The $1.2-million yearling, co-owned by CRK Stable and breeder Grandview Equine, is in the very best of hands with John Shirreffs. And another old master bringing along a raw talent is D. Wayne Lukas, whose Caldera (Liam's Map) looked the type to keep thriving when forcing Getaway Car (Curlin) nine lengths clear of their pursuers in the Sunland Park Derby. A fine pinhook by Scanlon Training & Sales ($75,000 July Sale/$500,000 OBS March), Caldera was bred by Don Alberto Corporation out of their homebred mare Send Me On My Way (Tiznow). The latter showed only a little ability in a light career, but she's a half-sister to two graded stakes-placed horses out of a Phipps homebred, Spare Change, who was tried in Grade I company after breaking her maiden at Saratoga. And little wonder, as Spare Change was out of no less a mare than Finder's Fee (Storm Cat), dual Grade I-winning granddaughter of the Phipps foundation mare Blitey (Riva Ridge). Quite a coup, in producing Spare Change, for Finder's Fee to have favored a stallion in only his second year at stud: name of… Bernardini! Finder's Fee had just one other daughter, Receipt (Dynaformer), whose breeding career was in turn sadly curtailed. Her only daughter, however, is none other than Feathered (Indian Charlie), the dam of Flightline (Tapit). A Golden Legacy You didn't think I'd let Chunk of Gold's eye-catching charge for 25 Derby points behind Magnitude pass unremarked? Not after spending so long banging a solitary drum for Preservationist, now sire of 44 winners from 77 starters, including four at stakes level. This beautifully bred horse has given up on the Bluegrass, after covering 11 mares at $5,000 last year, and will hopefully find that Korean breeders aren't quite such sheep. But he has left behind a $2,500 yearling now putting a team of journeymen on the Derby trail. As such, Chunk of Gold could prove another fitting memorial to his late breeder, Brereton C. Jones. That the Governor's legacy is in the best of hands is plain from the fact that Airdrie was prepared to give a horse like Preservationist a chance, while the 19 black-type winners raised in his name, the year after his passing, were surpassed only by a little outfit named Godolphin. But with the overall stallion scene becoming such an unholy mess, it's high time the rest of us also sought to emulate his fearless, free-thinking, far-sighted example. Equine MediRecord's software platform will be used for all equine participants during the upcoming Saudi Cup weekend. The company offers a service which allows for the full veterinary history of every participant to be recorded securely, ensuring the best possible horse welfare and aiding with crucial anti-doping procedures. The new system EMR, developed for the 2025 Saudi Cup, will automatically inform trainers from across the world of the safety and integrity regulations that need to be followed and what documents need to be submitted through the system to allow horses to run at the meeting. Records entered into the system cannot be altered, providing integrity and transparency. This includes an Arabic version of the Equine MediRecord platform to assist local trainers and veterinarians, helping to clear the Saudi-based horses through the meeting's equine welfare protocols. Clients and users of the Equine MediRecord platform include the British Horseracing Authority, Hong Kong Jockey Club, Thoroughbred Owners of California, Racing Victoria, Arabian Racing Organisation, Pegasus World Cup, Preakness Stakes and Breeders' Cup World Championships. In 2022, Equine MediRecord received a multi-million dollar investment from Merits Holdings to become part of their Business Infusions group, the largest equine veterinary software group in the world. With freezing weather in the forecast, Oaklawn Park has shifted its racing schedule for the coming week. The Hot Springs oval has canceled racing Friday and will move its Friday card to Saturday. The card originally scheduled for Saturday, which included the GII Rebel Stakes and GIII Honeybee Stakes, will be moved to Sunday. Races scheduled for Sunday will now be run Monday. Extreme cold temperatures also caused Turfway Park to move its Wednesday racing card to Sunday, with a first post time of 4:15 p.m. The Florence, Kentucky track canceled its Thursday card, with those races expected to be brought back as extras for upcoming entry days. Parx and Mahoning Valley Race Course were both forced to cancel their second straight day of racing Tuesday. Retired jockey and horse advocate Rosie Napravnik will be on site at Fair Grounds Race Course to spearhead the fifth annual “New Vocations Day at the Races” Feb. 22. A four-time local riding champion who was instrumental in the opening of the New Vocations facility in Covington, Louisiana, Napravnik will join the Fair Grounds' broadcast team to help build awareness, promote success stories, provide adoption options and inspire donations for Thoroughbred aftercare. “I am very proud to be part of the fifth annual New Vocations Day at Fair Grounds,” Napravnik said. “To my knowledge, there isn't another racetrack in the country that dedicates an entire racing day to aftercare initiatives. I'm incredibly grateful to the Fair Grounds and the New Vocations staff for their efforts, on-air host Joe Kristufek in particular. He's personally invested and goes above and beyond to make this day special.” Napravnik continued, “Our mission is to raise awareness. Louisiana horsemen, at the end of their careers, we are here locally to serve your horses in aftercare. Raising funds to support this initiative is also important. The first foals by Shadwell's G1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes and G1 Juddmonte International winner Mostahdaf (Ire) have been reported, including a colt out of Alaflaak, the dam of 'TDN Rising Star' Falakeyah (GB) (New Bay {GB}). The daughter of War Front is also a half-sister to the dam of Baaeed (GB) and Hukum (Ire), Aghareed (Kingmambo). The bay colt was born at Shadwell's own Derrinstown Stud in County Kildare. He is joined there by another colt out of the Listed winner Ataared (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}) from the family of the G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Tawkeel (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}). Stephen Collins, Shadwell's European bloodstock manager, said, “We have two incredibly nice colts by Mostahdaf. They both have a huge amount of quality, are strong, athletic and correct as well as having great bone and depth of girth. Shadwell have supported Mostahdaf with a number of high-class mares. The initial breeder feedback is very promising.” Among the breeders to send mares to Mostahdaf in his first season at Beech House Stud in 2024 was Chris O'Dowd, who has recently welcomed a half-brother to the Listed winner and G3 Molecomb Stakes runner-up Rocket Rodney (GB) (Dandy Man {Ire}). “I couldn't be happier with my colt out of Alushta,” said O'Dowd. “He is a solid and well-bodied foal with an attractive head and a great outlook. I hope to use Mostahdaf again.” One of Mostahdaf's earliest foals is a bay colt bred by Nick Bradley out of Seven Empires (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), a half-sister to the G2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier winner and G1 Prix Royal-Oak runner-up Sevenna's Knight (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), among others. Bradley said, “Seven Empires' colt is strong, correct, athletic with good bone. I'm very happy with him and I will be sending Mostahdaf two more mares this year.” Mostahdaf stands for a fee of £12,500 in his second season at Beech House Stud in 2025. Winchell Thoroughbreds' Magnitude (Not This Time), who catapulted himself to the top of the list of GI Kentucky Derby contenders with a jaw-dropping 9 3/4-length victory in the GII Risen Star Stakes Saturday, has been forced off the Triple Crown trail by an ankle chip. Winchell Thoroughbreds' racing manager David Fiske confirmed the news first reported by Daily Racing Form's Marcus Hersh Tuesday. “He came out of the race Saturday good,” Fiske said. “He ate up all his feed Saturday night. They took him out and gave him a bath and he seemed to be just fine Sunday. Sometime, I believe [Tuesday] morning, he was walking and somebody saw him just kind of give a little bit. And they checked further and decided to shoot some pictures and it appeared to be a chip. We got him scheduled for surgery Wednesday.” Dr. Larry Bramlage, who will perform the surgery Wednesday in Kentucky, gave a positive prognosis for the colt. “The brief assessment from Dr. Bramlage was that the prognosis was good,” Fiske said. “He shouldn't be away for any prolonged period of time. Just using the previous cases we've done, it's usually a couple of weeks in a stall, three weeks hand walking, sometimes they get turned out for three or four weeks and sometimes, they go right back into training after hand walking. So probably somewhere between five weeks and nine weeks before he trains again.” Dismissed at 43-1 in the Risen Star, Magnitude took the field wire-to-wire and completed the nine furlongs in 1:48.85. “The performance on Saturday was one of the most exciting 3-year-old performances I've seen in a while,” Fiske said. “And not just because he was our horse. And not because he won by 9 3/4 lengths. But all of the other things, the stakes record, Randy Moss's comment that it was probably the fastest 1 1/8 miles ever run by a 3-year-old at Fair Grounds, and the 108 Beyer. I was listening to Andy Beyer on [Steve] Byk's show yesterday, he was saying, 'I don't know what to do with it, usually I just discount those kind of performances, but I don't know that looked legit.' It was just exciting. We always thought he was good, but everything conspired to come together on Saturday evening–whether it was a favorable place on the racetrack, or being forward was where you needed to be, or whatever it was. A $270,000 colt was the top seller on day two of the NZB Standardbred National Yearling Sale in Christchurch. The two day sale concluded this afternoon with turnover overall at around $13m. A total of 91 yearlings were sold in Auckland ($5.7m) on Saturday while in Christchurch today 139 yearlings were sold ($7.3m). Bought by Cran Dalgety/Kentuckiana Lodge, the highest price today went to Lot 139, a Bettor’s Delight – Imagine Me colt offered by newly crowned Breeder of the Year, Taffy Limited. For Dalgety the colt reminded him of a certain New Zealand Derby champion and multiple Group 1 winner. “He looks like Krug – if he is as fast we don’t know.” Just five lots earlier Hayden Cullen went to $160,000 to secure another Taffy Limited colt. The European Pattern Committee (EPC) announced on Tuesday that it has approved the upgrade of four Group 2 races to Group 1 status, including the City Of York Stakes. Traditionally run at York's Ebor Festival in August, it will become the second all-aged seven-furlong Group 1 race in Europe, alongside the Prix de la Forèt at ParisLongchamp in October. The remaining Group 1 upgrades were all related to the EPC's continued pan-European focus on the middle-distance and staying horse. In Britain, the British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot was upgraded to join the four existing Group 1 races on British Champions Day, while France will see the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier at ParisLongchamp upgraded, offering an earlier Group 1 opportunity for staying horses in the spring. Finally, in Ireland, the Golden Fleece for two-year-olds at Leopardstown on Irish Champions Weekend will be upgraded to Group 1 status for 2026, in tandem with an increase in race distance from eight furlongs to nine furlongs. The advanced notification of this upgrade is intended to allow time for participants to become aware of the change and to give the race the best chance of success from year one and thereafter. One further upgrade was approved in France, with the Prix d'Aumale at ParisLongchamp, run over a mile for juvenile fillies in September, upgraded from Group 3 to Group 2 status. The EPC also sanctioned five new Listed races across Europe, including the introduction of a juvenile contest titled the Pat Smullen Stakes, which will be staged over a mile at Naas in early-July. The EPC ratified a total of 814 black-type races, down from 826 in 2024, comprising 411 Group races (416 in 2024) and 403 Listed races (410). Most notable is that the G1 Prix Jean Romanet will now be to open to three-year-olds, having previously been restricted to fillies and mares aged four and above, following the removal of the G2 Prix Alec Head at Deauville in August. The Group 2 contest formerly known as the Prix de Pomone will be renamed as the Prix Alec Head. Meanwhile, the G3 La Coupe de Maisons-Laffitte has effectively merged with the G3 Prix du Prince d'Orange, which will now be open to older horses. Two Listed events have also been removed as part of similar action, which is hoped will improve competitiveness and strengthen the overall programme in France. The French programme will also see a change of date for the G1 Prix Vermeille, G2 Prix Niel and G2 Prix Foy, which will all be brought forward by seven days. This will allow an extra week of preparation for Arc contenders, while it was also announced that the G1 Prix du Moulin, staged on the same card at ParisLongchamp, has had its value increased to €800,000 for this year. In Ireland, it has been agreed that the G3 Anglesey Stakes should swap dates with the G2 Railway Stakes (both at the Curragh), which should create better progression through the Pattern for two-year-olds domestically. Another noteworthy change is a later date for the G2 Derby Italiano in Rome, which moves from mid-May to June 2–a national holiday in Italy. 'At Risk' Races for 2026 A total of 22 Pattern and Listed races will be at risk of potential downgrade in 2026, depending on their performance in 2025. They include the G2 Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury, run over six furlongs for two-year-olds. It is particularly important to the EPC that three of these upgrades are relating to the staying horse, an area that European racing has for so long excelled in, and one in which we are committed to safeguarding with a pan-European approach. “The EPC noted that previous efforts have only achieved limited success in retaining our top stayers in Europe in the face of strong export market opportunities. The promotion of the Vicomtesse Vigier in France and, for 2026, the Golden Fleece in Ireland are part of a complementary package of changes to developmental races for staying horses in those two countries, following similar measures already introduced in Britain. Our major European horseracing nations are not merely focused on a top-down approach, but are also implementing various strategic interventions within the wider racing programme to ensure the continued production and retention of sufficient high-class horses to sustain our domestic and international programmes, with a particular focus on the middle distance and staying race areas.” He continued, “However, it is important to note that this year will see another reduction in the number of Pattern and Listed races to be staged throughout Europe, with the total number having been reduced from 852 races in 2022 to 814 in 2025. The EPC continues to enforce the most stringent international quality control measures so that the kitemark of excellence that European black type provides is protected, whilst attempting to identify possible remedies for a declining quality horse population and alleviate the downward pressure on race ratings. “The EPC reviews its Ground Rules regularly and has agreed that a 2lb lower rating parameter will in future apply for three-year-old-only races which mirrors the position adopted by the Asian Pattern Committee and is likely to become the international norm. In agreeing this change, the EPC noted with concern the declining ratings of three-year-old races internationally in recent years and believes that the symptoms behind this trend need to be considered, the underlying causes identified and then solutions sought within the EPC member countries and globally.” York Reaction William Derby, chief executive and clerk of the course at York Racecourse, said, “We are thrilled that all the hard work, support and investment in the Sky Bet City Of York Stakes has been rewarded by its elevation to the highest level of racing, Group 1 status. “I am delighted to confirm that Britain's only all-age Group 1 over seven furlongs will be run for a record prize fund of £600,000–a boost of £100,000 on last year's renewal. The six-furlong conditions event, open to all two-year-olds and to be run without penalties, will open the card, taking the total value of the meeting to £4.35 million in 2025. More details about the new race will be released later in the year. It was also revealed that the British Champions Series will cease from this year, with the priority of the business being delivery of the day itself, progressing Club 26–the racing club for 18-26-year-olds–and the expansion of The Hall of Fame. Having made the decision to fork out a $55,000 late entry fee for the Gr.1 Blue Diamond Stakes, Field Of Play (Deep Field) heads the market for the race after a perfect barrier draw. A field of 16 will line up in Victoria’s most prestigious two-year-old race over 1200m at Caulfield on Saturday with the Trent Busuttin and Natalie-trained Field Of Play drawn in gate five. Field Of Play is by three-time champion Hong Kong sire Deep Field and out of a winning I Am Invincible mare. He was offered by Kaha Nui Farm in Book 1 of Karaka 2024, where he was knocked down to Jamie Richards and Andrew Williams Bloodstock for $500,000. Field Of Play was not nominated for the Blue Diamond when entries closed last year as he had been earmarked for Hong Kong, but after winning at Moonee Valley on debut and then scoring in the Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) on February 8, connections decided to pay the late entry fee. The gelded son of Deep Field has already amassed just shy of $300,000 from his two wins.
