By Mike Love A lot of excitement greeted Greendale trainer Norm Leacock-Jones’ first training success at Banks Peninsula yesterday. “We were all jumping up and down because we thought we’d got second – so when the announcer called her in first we couldn’t believe it,” said Leacock-Jones. In Race 3, the Seahorse Supplements Seahorse Mobile Pace, John Morrison eased Varenna Franco back from her outside draw to settle back of midfield in the running line. A couple of mid-race lead changes improved their position to one out one back from the 1200m. Morrison peeled just short of the home bend to swoop to the lead and did very well to hold out the shortest priced favourite of the day in Mariana Trench to win by a nose. “Everyone was congratulating me which I thought was awesome. It was really overwhelming.” “The run at Rangiora when she did all of the work didn’t really suit her. The plan was to try not to do too much work and have a go at them at the end.” Leacock-Jones currently trains a small team including two fillies currently at the workouts – a trotter and another “really big pacer.” “We work them down at the Hororata track, but it’s been closed the last couple of weeks because they’ve been doing fencing so we haven’t been able to do much work with them really.” Vareena Franco is raced by the Bad Wolf syndicate, including Leacock-Jones’ mother Jacqueline Jones. It was the four-year- old Vincent mare’s first win in four starts. “She got a bit messy so I’ll need to change a bit of gear on her to get that sorted.” “She’ll get a run on Wednesday – then we will probably go to Ashburton on Saturday.” Leacock-Jones helped his father Donald Jones who trained 10 winners, most of which came from well performed entire Copperhead Rose. “The plan really is to get horses going and then sell them.” “I owe a big thanks to everyone that has helped me out, everyone is always happy to give advice if I need it. Right from the start people have helped me out and I’m grateful.” View the full article

Kevin Hickman has left a lasting mark on New Zealand’s breeding industry, with the recent success of sensational filly Pivotal Ten an embodiment of his vision at Valachi Downs. A daughter of Ten Sovereigns, Pivotal Ten has been unbeaten in her last five starts for trainer-jockey Samantha Wynne, including victories in the Listed NZB Insurance Stakes (1400m), Listed Gore Guineas (1335m) and Listed Southland Guineas (1400m). At Gore, her nearest rival was six lengths away, while she was simply flawless at Ascot Park, putting nearly nine lengths on the field in a searing time of 1.21.70. A hugely influential figure in the South Island and domestic racing communities, Hickman sadly passed away in August last year. Gareth Downey, who was the General Manager at his stud, Valachi Downs, until its closure in 2022, takes great pride in watching Hickman’s legacy live on through the filly. “All of us that were involved in Valachi are delighted to watch how well she’s going and it seems very appropriate that it’s happening in the South Island, which is Kevin’s homeland,” Downey said. “We have so much admiration and respect for Kevin, we all loved watching the Valachi gold racing and while she’s not carrying those colours, every time she goes around, it feels like she’s got Kevin’s legacy running along with her. We all get a huge amount of thrill watching that. “I can’t help but think how much he would’ve loved to race the filly himself, but given that she did have to be sold, the fact that she’s being raced by someone like Colin (Wightman) who is an owner-breeder himself, it’s great to see. “He’s having an incredible journey with her.” A product of Hickman’s Waikato thoroughbred nursery, Pivotal Ten was sold through the National Weanling Sale of 2022 to Wightman, who outlaid $15,000 to secure her. “She was a very attractive weanling, possibly a touch small at the time which was a family trait,” Downey said. “You look back now and $15,000 seems like a remarkable purchase price, I think we had 20 weanlings go through that sale and only three of them sold for less than this filly. “She was the eighth foal out of the mare, and although there is a wonderful family behind her, people tend to go to the weanling sales for pinhook opportunities and she wasn’t an obvious commercial pinhook at the time. “She was well-suited to Colin, who wanted to race and ultimately have the potential of breeding from her.” Pivotal Ten was among the first southern hemisphere crop of Ten Sovereigns, a multiple-Group One winning son of No Nay Never. Owned by Coolmore, Ten Sovereigns shuttled to Valachi Downs in 2021 with U S Navy Flag, who was subsequently sold to The Oaks Stud. “We were lucky enough to have U S Navy Flag come first, and after that venture went well, we went to Coolmore looking for another opportunity,” Downey said. “He had all the same sort of appeal that U S Navy Flag had, a great race record, good family behind him and a lovely big type. He was a speed-oriented sire. “The only challenge with him was that he had a remarkably similar profile to U S Navy Flag, so they did compete against each other, but he appealed to us because of the quality of his race record over there.” Ten Sovereigns mated with a British imported-broodmare in Lady Woodcote, who while herself was unraced, is a full-sister to Maarek, winner of the Gr.1 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp (1000m) among a number of other stakes victories. “When the industry reflects on Kevin’s contribution, obviously he made an amazing contribution and he was an amazing man, but one of the things he did was bring these mares from the Northern Hemisphere into the New Zealand breeding industry,” Downey said. “Although Lady Woodcote was unraced, having a Pivotal full-sister to a Group One winner with a lovely family behind her made her the kind of mare that Kevin was looking to try and bring down. “The various family members that have descended from her can now continue that legacy for a long time.” Of Lady Woodcote’s other progeny to race, four have been winners, including Woodcote Lass, who was placed in the Listed Canterbury Belle Stakes (1200m). The mare was sold through Valachi’s dispersal sale in 2022 and purchased by Murray Bloodstock, where she was then served by Tarzino, resulting in a colt that was sold to Wightman and GB Bloodstock for $18,000 at the National Weanling Sale last June. One of the headline acts for Saturday’s triple Group One meeting at Caulfield is the mouthwatering clash between weight-for-age heavyweights Mr Brightside (NZ) (Bullbars) and I Wish I Win (NZ) (Savabeel), but trainer and co-owner Peter Moody is keeping his options open with I Wish I Win. Moody said on Monday that while he will nominate the Group One star for Saturday’s Gr.1 Futurity (1400m), he is not locked-in to running I Wish I Win in any race. “There’s a race for him from now and until the middle of June every Saturday, so he doesn’t have to run unless I am happy with him,” Moody said. “I’ve got to be happy with the horse. He’s coming along well and he’ll gallop in the morning (Tuesday) and we’ll see how he goes and take it from there.” The stable is reluctant to run I Wish I Win on firm ground and so the Melbourne forecast for the week will be monitored closely. There is no rain predicted in the Victorian capital until possibly Saturday, with 38 degrees forecast for race day and Friday also expected to be dry with a top of 32. If I Wish I Win does contest the Futurity and run as well as he seemingly always does, the $2.5 million All-Star Mile (1600m) on March 8 – where he would again clash with Mr Brightside – could loom as a second-up target. I Wish I Win and Mr Brightside are among Australasia’s all-time leading money earners, with I Wish I Win boasting earnings of A$12.7m from 24 starts while Mr Brightside has collected A$16.5m from 41 starts. They have only clashed once in the past and that was 18 months ago when Mr Brightside won the Gr.1 Memsie Stakes (1400m), with I Wish I Win finishing strongly for third, just half a length from the winner. The Sportsbet market suggests I Wish I Win could be Mr Brightside only genuine Futurity rival, with $1.80 bet about the Lindsay Park-trained star and I Wish I Win at $4.50. There is a margin then to the next line at $10, occupied by the Godolphin pair Tom Kitten and Pericles. View the full article

Kelvin Tyler ticked off another milestone in his training career at Ascot Park on Saturday, bringing up his 400th winner with progressive gelding Monaghan Boy. The Riverton-based horseman has been a prominent figure in the South Island racing scene for well over a decade, while also successfully campaigning horses such as Lightning Jack, Lady Sass, Master Marko and Prince Alby in the north in recent seasons. Closer to home, Tyler had a big team of runners engaged on Southland Guineas Day and secured a winning double, bringing up the 400th domestic success with the first of those in Monaghan Boy. A gelding by Ghibellines, Monaghan Boy had been lightly-raced with just eight starts under his belt, the most recent of those coming the previous weekend at Wingatui where he finished seventh behind Cherryville. Coming back to his favoured 1400m range, Monaghan Boy looked a big danger under a featherlight 52.5kg and hit the lead at the top of the straight, never being headed to score by three-quarters of a length to Whiny Meow. Tyler had been confident of a bold showing and was rapt with the performance. “I thought he came into the race really well, he had a nice claimer on his back and had 52.5kg,” Tyler said. “I think he likes the tighter turning track and at 1400m, I thought he’d be quite hard to beat. “Originally I was going to try and qualify him for the ODT Southern Mile Final, but I think the mile seems to undo him a little bit. There is a nice 1400m on that day, so he’ll come into that nicely as well I think.” The victory was Monaghan Boy’s third in nine starts, earning over $67,000 for the Carriers Arms Racing Syndicate. Two races later, Tyler was back in the winner’s circle with Quick Call, who bounced back into winning form at the right time in the $50,000 Rating 65 contest. The daughter of Turn Me Loose had been badly hampered in a fall last-start and entered Saturday’s race a $20 chance, but she defied those odds with a gusty effort to score by a length to Float. “She works very well but has probably been racing slightly below average, she’s only a wee thing to be honest,” Tyler said. “But, I’ve got her up over ground and she seemed to grow another leg. “Two starts ago, she was unfortunately hooked up in a fall, so I couldn’t really knock her for that. She did surprise me a bit on Saturday, to be stuck three-wide like that and still winning was an unbelievable run.” Tyler was equally pleased for apprentice jockey Abdul Najib, who partnered both Quick Call and Monaghan Boy to victory. “He tries really hard and has a great mannerism, I love supporting these apprentices and giving them a shot,” Tyler said. “I just tell them to go out there and do their best, if it doesn’t work out then there is always another day. We always go out with a Plan A, but if they need to change something, so be it and I’ll support them.” Quick Call races in the well-recognised colours of Terry Lines, a key supporter of the Tyler stable. While he may not have realised the milestone was approaching, Tyler was pleasantly surprised to be told on a feature day for the region. “I’m not big on records really, if someone didn’t tell me I probably wouldn’t have known, but it’s quite a privilege,” he said. “That’s quite a few winners. “I’m always looking to my next one not my last one, but it’s an honour so hopefully we can keep ticking away and get a few more. “It was a great day, I walked the track on Friday night and I thought it was closer to a (Soft) 6 than a 5, which I believe they need to be at this time of the year. It started as a 5 and ended up a (Good) 4, it was good, safe racing. Horses were coming from all over the track, it played fair and that’s all you want.” View the full article

Former Hong Kong galloper Nicconi County saluted for the first time since arriving on Kiwi soil at Matamata on Saturday. The son of Nicconi was bred in Australia and had one run in his homeland under the name of Silent Theory, finishing second in the Listed Without Fear Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville. He was then sold to Hong Kong, going on to win three races and HK$4.7 million in the care of Caspar Fownes. A long-standing association between Fownes and Bob Vance brought Nicconi County to New Zealand, following in the footsteps of Group One winner Royal Performer and a number of other imports. After a couple of runs to build fitness, Nicconi County showed his ability with a solid last-start fourth behind Miss Rockette, indicating he would be a key player in the Price Racing 1400 on Matamata’s feature day. In the hands of apprentice jockey Triston Moodley, Nicconi County bounced the gates well and found a handy position on the fence behind pacemaker Strange Love. Strange Love showed a good kick on the corner but Nicconi County was right on her heels, ranging up to the leader at the 200m and finding the winning advantage to score by a long neck. Vance, who trains in partnership with his wife Jenny at Ardmore Lodge, was pleased to see the gelding perform up to his Hong Kong credentials. “It was the first time he’s actually had a decent draw, so I think that made a big difference,” he said. “It took him a little while to adjust to life here being in a paddock, he put on a bit of condition and life was a bit too good for him. It’s taken him about four runs and he dropped down to 65 as well, but now that he’s fit, I think he can go on with it. “He had a slight ligament injury but he seems to have gotten over that here, being in a paddock certainly has helped. That was the only problem he had, his form coming out of Hong Kong was good and he had a win and couple of seconds in his last few starts there. “He’ll be up in 75 again now, so we’ll probably look for a 1400m in that grade. It’s interesting to note that he never raced past 1200m in Hong Kong, but the way he races, the 1400 seems to be a good distance for him. “It’s great that he’s got another string to his bow and can get out to that distance.” A former top jockey, Vance rode a number of winners in Hong Kong for Fownes’ father Lawrie, sparking a friendship spanning over three decades. “I used to ride for Caspar’s father when I was up there, we’ve known each other for 30-40 years now,” Vance said. “I really only get them from him and he only really sends me the ones that are going to stand up to racing and have some petrol left in the tank. “We’ve had a lot of horses from Hong Kong, including Royal Performer who won the Herbie Dyke (Gr.1, 2000m). Not all of them have been capable of winning here, but the majority of them can and have done well.” Perfect Dividends, another horse the Vance’s received out of Hong Kong, continued his good form with a second placing behind Beast Of Burden in the Rich Hill Stud 1200. Cambridge Stud was in the thick of the action at Matamata with a hat-trick of winners and also made an impression further afield. The premier nursery’s graduates were led by stakes victor What You Wish For, while Balance Of Power and Moschino starred on the undercard. In Australia, resident stallion Almanzor was represented by stakes winner Rise At Dawn and the farm also enjoyed success in Hong Kong, with veteran Gallant Crown adding to his tally at Sha Tin. What You Wish For is a son of Embellish and opened his winning black-type account when triumphant in the Listed Kaimai Stakes (2000m). The Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson-trained representative joined Hitabell, Bold Soul and the stud-raced Luberon as stakes winners produced by the Group One-winning son of Savabeel. “Embellish has had a fantastic summer and it was a great result, especially for Te Akau who raced Embellish and have been such big supporters of him,” said Scott Calder, Cambridge Stud’s Head of Sales and Nominations. What You Wish For is the first foal of the Smart Missile mare Grand Wish and was a $60,000 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale buy for Te Akau’s David Ellis who also secured her unraced half-sister, Wish Come True, by Savabeel for $190,000. Their dam is a half-sister to the Gr.1 Galaxy Handicap (1100m) winner Griante, who was raced by her trainer David Brideoake with Brendan and Jo Lindsay. Grand Wish has a yearling son by Sword Of State, produced a sister to What You Wish For last season and is back in foal to Embellish. “The Sword Of State colt will be part of the NZB Online Yearling Sale so he’s had a big boost,” Calder said. Meanwhile, What You Wish For’s stablemate Balance Of Power, an Almanzor four-year-old, was also secured at Karaka by Ellis for $300,000. He now has three career victories to his credit and a runner-up finish in the Listed Challenge Stakes as a juvenile. Balance Of Power is the first foal of the Power mare Respin, successful in an edition of the Listed Inglewood Stakes, and his brother was sold to trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou and Andrew Williams Bloodstock at Karaka last year for $260,000. “The mare has a yearling filly by Almanzor and had a filly by Satono Aladdin last season and is in foal to Chaldean,” Calder said. Moschino is trained by Margaret Falconer and raced under her Ellesmere Thoroughbreds banner, and following six placings has now won her last two starts. Moschino is a daughter of Ten Sovereigns and the Stravinsky mare Botanic and was purchased via the Gavelhouse platform for $2700. The dam is a half-sister to the South African stakes winner Diamond King and since Moschino, has produced a pair of fillies by Sword Of State and is back in foal to the Snitzel stallion. Rise At Dawn, who was bred by Monovale Holdings, won Saturday’s Listed The Elms Handicap (1400m) to earn the Lindsay Park-trained representative a spot in the Gr.1 All Star Mile (1600m). “He has gone through the grades and has had eight wins from 13 starts and just puts himself in his races and takes bad luck out of the equation,” Calder said. Cambridge Stud’s weekend was crowned at Sha Tin on Sunday evening when graduate Gallant Crown posted his eighth victory. The David Hayes-trained eight-year-old was initially purchased at Karaka for $40,000 by Mark Forbes’ Kiltannon Stables and was later passed in at the Ready to Run Sale. He was a trial winner at Ruakaka for Forbes as a three-year-old and subsequently sold to Hong Kong interests. The gelding is a son of Hallowed Crown and the Stravinsky mare Justagem, who has a Sword Of State yearling, and her half-sister Penny Gem won the G1 Captain Cook Stakes. View the full article

What Newcastle Races Where Newcastle Racecourse – 100 Darling St, Broadmeadow NSW 2292 When Tuesday, February 18, 2025 First Race 2:25pm AEDT Visit Dabble Newcastle Racecourse is the destination for provincial racing on Tuesday afternoon, with a six-part program awaiting locals. The rail moves out +11m the entire circuit for the meeting, and with no significant rainfall predicted in the lead-up, punters can happily do the form for a genuine Good 4 surface. The opening event is scheduled to get underway at 2:25pm AEDT. Best Bet at Newcastle: City Gold Banner City Gold Banner endured a torrid run three-wide without cover at Kembla Grange on January 29, fading out badly in the concluding stages. Punters can be forgiving of that performance and reference his debut victory at Warwick Farm on January 8, where the son of Starspangledbanner circled the small field of five to claim an impressive maiden victory. Expect a positive steer by Keagan Latham from the awkward draw (9), and provided he can recapture his best, the appears to be a fair price to find out. Best Bet Race 5 – #1 City Gold Banner (9) 3yo Colt | T: Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou | J: Keagan Latham (60.5kg) Next Best at Newcastle: Botanica Botanica is on the short back-up after returning at Canterbury on February 14 and appeared to need the run first-up. The son of Written Tycoon was only getting warm late, and punters can be willing to spectate that effort as a glorified barrier trial heading into this second-up assignment. Zac Lloyd elects to stick aboard the lightly raced five-year-old, and if the breaks fall his way from stall 12, Botanica should have the class to despatch this lot. Next Best Race 3 – #2 Botanica (12) 5yo Gelding | T: Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes | J: Zac Lloyd (61.5kg) Best Value at Newcastle: Tokyo Queen Tokyo Queen represents terrific value with horse racing bookmakers as she debuts for the Fabio Martino barn. The daughter of Staphanos is yet to fully extend at the barrier trials, suggesting the unraced three-year-old had plenty left to give at the end of her most recent piece of work at Warwick Farm on January 30. She maps to get a lovely run in transit from barrier five, and with this maiden contest full of live chances, Tokyo Queen has the most appeal at the each-way price. Odds Bookmakers News Field Past Winners Hobartville Stakes Group Two Betting Guide Date: Saturday, February 22, 2025 Location: Rosehill Gardens – Sydney, New South Wales Prize Money: $400,000 Distance: 1400m The Hobartville Stakes is a Group 2 race for three-year-olds, run over 1400m under set weight conditions. Named after one of NSW’s historic thoroughbred stud farms, it has long been a key lead-up to Sydney’s autumn classics. Originally held in early spring, the Hobartville Stakes shifted to autumn in 1978, aligning with the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m), Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m). Traditionally run at Warwick Farm, the Hobartville Stakes now alternates between Rosehill Gardens and Royal Randwick. The 2024 Hobartville Stakes, worth $400,000, was won by Celestial Legend, defeating Encap and Les Vampires, giving trainer Les Bridge his second Hobartville win—40 years after Sir Dapper’s victory in 1984. Several Hobartville Stakes winners have gone on to Group 1 success, including Pierro, Dissident, Hallowed Crown, Kementari, and The Autumn Sun. Notably, Aegon triumphed as an unbeaten Kiwi in 2021, while Dissident, Hallowed Crown, and The Autumn Sun claimed the Randwick Guineas double. Other notable winners include Anamoe, Lonhro, Sir Dapper, and Celestial Legend. 2025 Hobartville Stakes betting odds HorseBetting.com.au will update this page when the 2025 Hobartville Stakes betting odds are released. How to bet on the Hobartville Stakes Australian horse racing bookmakers will have betting on the Hobartville Staks available. Many of them will open an early market so you can wager on the race a week or so in advance. Unlike many of the bigger races the acceptances are only done a few days before the race so you won’t find a futures market weeks in advance, like major Group 1 races like the Melbourne Cup and Cox Plate. Aussie bookies like Dabble offer all of the usual bet types on the race and you will have the option of using ‘boosted odds’ at some of them. This simply means you place your win bet and use the boosted odds option, which could send a $10 shot out to $15. This provides great value and is as good a reason as any to bet online. With a lot of speed injected in the race, due to the race favourite Aft Cabin and Communist racing each other to hold the lead, it set the race up for a swooper to finish strong and that’s exactly what Osipenko did under the urgings of Nash Rawiller. Osipenko jumped as a $7.50 third favourite with online betting sites and when you consider his run in the Caulfield Guineas last preparation, finishing half a length behind Golden Mile, he was always going to be hard to beat in the Hobartville. 2022: Anamoe oozes class The 2022 Hobartville Stakes, held at Rosehill Gardens, was claimed by Anamoe, showcasing his class with a strong performance. Trained by James Cummings and ridden by James McDonald, Anamoe settled midfield before unleashing a powerful finish to defeat Hilal and Converge. The Godolphin colt’s victory reaffirmed his status as one of Australia’s top three-year-olds, setting him up perfectly for the Randwick Guineas and further Group 1 targets in the autumn carnival. Heavily favored Scipio sailed home a much-the-best winner of the Baffle Stakes at Santa Anita. The dark bay colt, twice graded-placed while still a maiden, earned his first career victory going one mile over the Santa Anita turf last time out and was the 4-5 favorite to make it two in a row while making his first start down the hill Sunday. He raced near the back of a compact field and was buried behind a wall of horses approaching the stretch. Tipped to the center of course at the top of the lane, Scipio glided effortlessly to the lead under a hand ride from Flavien Prat and cruised under the wire. A debut third at Del Mar last August, Scipio closed to be a narrowly beaten third in the Sept. 8 GIII Del Mar Juvenile Turf. He was fourth in the Nov. 1 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes and second in the Dec. 1 GIII Cecil B. DeMille Stakes before graduating versus maiden company Dec. 28. Soul Spirit, a half-sister to graded winners Journey Home (War Front) and Ticker Tape Home (Medaglia d'Oro), has a 2-year-old colt by Hard Spun and a yearling filly by Tacitus. By Jonny Turner Insarchatwist upstaged her younger siblings when cruising to victory in the Gore Town and Country Club Gore Summer Cup yesterday. The eight-year-old sped through underneath her brother Hacksaw Ridge, with the pair sealing a quinella in the feature event for trainer Ricky Gutsell and his racing partners Neil and Eualie Thwaites. The trio had already produced a significant accomplishment before the standing start tapes were released in the Gore Summer Cup. The quinella pairing of Insarchatwist and Hacksaw Ridge were joined in the 2750m feature by another full sibling in Still Rockin. Between them, the three brothers and sisters have produced 24 wins for Gutsell and the Thwaites, with the Gore Summer Cup the latest addition to their list of successes. “You just about have to pinch yourself with the results we have had with the breed,” Gutsell said, “to have three full siblings in a cup race, I don’t think that would have been done too many times before.” “To get the quinella was a huge thrill.” Gutsell and the Thwaites secured their trio’s dam Insar when she was being advertised as free to a good home around ten years ago. The broodmare has since been retired from breeding, after leaving a half-sister to her Gore Summer Cup trio in Baltic Star who raced in race 2 at Gore. Eastern Southland trainers enjoyed a great day out on their home patch yesterday. Tony Stratford produced Rakavenom and Tuneinsportsfans to win at his home track, with visiting reinsman Robbie Close combining with both pacers. Gore pacer Captain Starlight continued his form resurgence when backing up his victory at Winton last week when scoring in a harder grade on his home track for trainer Allan McVicar Imperial Man ended a frustrating run of form with a powerful display earlier in the programme for Gore trainer John Ryan. The six-year-old had made costly mistakes in his prior two starts back from a spell. Though the trotter was a little shaky in his gait early, driver Rory McIlwrick helped Imperial Man hold himself together before the pair produced a powerful winning burst from last. “He takes himself out of that early piece, you can’t do anything with him,” McIlwrick said, “but he was explosive today. John had him on the money for the big day at Gore and we were rapt.” Yesterday’s trotting feature, the Kim McDowall Painting and Decorating Gore Summer Trotters Cup was taken out by Hidden Talent. The classy mare made it a hat-trick of wins when charging home from off the pace to win in a track record-breaking time for trainer-driver Nathan Williamson. View the full article

Getaway Car just got his nose in front to nip Caldera on the line in a dramatic finish to the Sunland Park Derby. Already a graded stakes winner and Grade I stakes-placed, Getaway Car was sent off the 6-5 favorite in his sophomore debut Sunday. He went right to the lead and was unchallenged while setting fractions of :23.31 and :46.93. Caldera, who had raced in midpack down the backstretch, rushed up four wide as the favorite attempted to skip away on the far turn. The gray stuck his head in front at the top of the lane, but Getaway Car refused to yield, battling back bravely along the rail to eke out the narrow victory. The effort earned the winner an additional 20 qualifying points towards the GI Kentucky Derby, putting him third on the list with a total of 36 points. Getaway Car was tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' following his debut victory at Del Mar last July and romped home by 5 1/2 lengths in the Aug. 11 GIII Best Pal Stakes in his second outing. He faded to fourth after setting the pace in the Sept. 8 GI Del Mar Futurity and was second behind subsequent juvenile champion Citizen Bull (Into Mischief) in the Oct. 5 GI American Pharoah Stakes. He was fourth behind that stablemate in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile before concluding 2024 with a runner-up effort in the Dec. 14 GII Los Alamitos Futurity. It was a front-running masterclass by the son of Written By, with Tim Clark electing to cross to the lead throughout the 1100m contest from barrier seven, ensuring stablemate and second-favourite Espionage ($2.80) would be forced to take the leaders back. The two-year-old colt led them up at a strong tempo, with some of the leading contenders – including Erno’s Cube ($6.50), Celerity ($10.00) and Embassy ($9.00) all left chasing a long way out. 2023: Cylinder finishes best Brenton Avdulla and James Cummings combined with Cylinder to take out the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes defeating two Golden Slipper fancies Kings Gambit and Platinum Jubilee. With King’s Gambit dominating the market as a $2.50 favourite with online betting sites, Cylinder was backed in from $6 to $4.40 before the jump in the two-year-old Group 2 event, with the latter showing that he had more improvement to come, with the Golden Slipper in four weeks time. Platinum Jubilee led the field up to the home corner, but as soon as the field entered the final 300m there was only one runner that you wanted your money on, and that was the winner. The Exceed And Excel colt lengthened nicely to run past Platinum Jubilee and then pull away for a nice half-length victory and put himself into the Golden Slipper conversation. 2022: Best Of Bordeaux, best of juveniles Best Of Bordeaux proved he’s the real deal, showcasing brilliant speed to win the Group 2 $250,000 Silver Slipper (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens. We don't often see 43-1 shots winning graded stakes by 9 3/4 lengths, and when we do, those victories are often subsequently proven to be flukes. If you go by the numbers, an off-the-charts, outlier effort like the one orchestrated by Magnitude (Not This Time) in Saturday's GII Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds–in which his 108 Beyer Speed Figure equated to a walloping 34-point improvement off his last race–is more likely to be met with pari-mutuel skepticism than enthusiasm when this colt races next, most likely in the GII Louisiana Derby Mar. 22. But if you strip out the numerical audacities of Magnitude's accomplishment (huge odds, gaudy winning margin, potentially unreplicable speed figure) and focus solely on the visual aspect of his breakout victory, it's difficult to nitpick his performance. This Steve Asmussen trainee for Winchell Thoroughbreds outbroke the field from the outermost 12 post, and after being initially hustled by jockey Ben Curtis for the first sixteenth of a mile, Magnitude settled into his own energetic clip under a hold while taking intimidating pace pressure from 4-5 favorite and 'TDN Rising Star' East Avenue (Medaglia d'Oro). Asked to ramp up his run approaching the far turn after brisk opening quarter-mile splits of :23.42 and :23.50, Magnitude drew away from a spent East Avenue, but immediately had to brace for a fresh challenge from the second favorite, the 3-1 Built (Hard Spun), a seasoned, two-turn stakes winner who appeared to have dead aim on the pacemaker into a third quarter-mile split of :24.03. Set down for the drive at the head of the long Fair Grounds stretch, Magnitude shrugged off Built's bid by the time they crested the three-sixteenths pole, then ran up his margin while soaring home solo through a fourth quarter in :25.18 and a final furlong in :12.72 for a 1:48.85 nine-furlong clocking. That's the fastest Risen Star in seven runnings (including one year with split divisions) since that stakes was elongated to nine furlongs in 2020. Beyond that very small sample though, historical evidence exists that Magnitude's trouncing holds up extremely well against longer-term statistics. Randy Moss of NBC-TV, who makes speed figures for the Beyer team and is also a co-host of the TDN's Writers' Room podcast, wrote on the X social media platform Sunday that Magnitude's final time for the Risen Star “is likely the fastest” 1 1/8-mile win ever by any 3-year-old at Fair Grounds. The lone exception that Moss's research uncovered was the 1:48 4/5 clocking by Clev Er Tell in the 1977 Louisiana Derby, which predated the modern era of timing races in hundredths of seconds. Moss noted that Magnitude was assigned a preliminary 109 Beyer in the aftermath of the race, but that figure was “tweaked slightly to 108” by midday Sunday based on revised run-up distance calculations for the Risen Star. Even still, Magnitude's 108, Moss wrote, “equals the highest Beyer ever for a sophomore at Fair Grounds.” In 2003, Badge of Silver also earned a 108 when he won the 2003 running of the 1 1/16-miles version of the Risen Star by 10 lengths, Moss wrote. “The impact of the Risen Star on the Derby picture will be debated, due to the possible existence of a fast-rail bias,” Moss wrote. “But regardless, the performance was still crazy good.” While Saturday's dirt races at Fair Grounds might have been slanted somewhat toward speed-centric horses, it's difficult to make an overt, definitive case that frontrunners and the inside dominated. The nine main-track races in New Orleans that afternoon spanned 6 3/4 hours from noontime 'til past nightfall, yielding three wire-to-wire winners, one winner just off the speed, five stalkers and zero closers. But guess what? Speed is the general winning profile for American dirt racing, and the shortest way around the track is often the fastest. Sometimes, when we encounter aberrational, unexpected results, there's a tendency to chalk them up to the way the track was playing. Crying “bias” here might be forcing the issue. That line of thinking didn't stop Asmussen from invoking that very term in his post-win analysis on Saturday. “We put him where he needed to be, played the bias of the racetrack, and he took advantage of it,” Asmussen said after racking up his fourth edition of the Risen Star. Curtis noted that he was riding as per Asmussen's instructions by seeking the lead. But even if that game plan was influenced by the Hall-of-Fame trainer seeing how the track seemed to be playing earlier in the day, Magnitude's best shot on paper appeared to be to try and take control by clearing the field anyway. Of his seven lifetime races, the colt's only two previous wins came when he had hit the front by the middle of the race. Now he's 3-for-3 in situations where he's made the lead by the midpoint call or sooner. Flying under the radar until this past weekend, Magnitude ($310,000 KEENOV, $450,000 KEESEP) has compiled a better-than-it-looks overall body of work that includes five races at a mile or longer (four of them around two turns). Epicenter when winning the 2022 Risen Star at Fair Grounds | Hodges Photography / Amanda Hodges Weir He is drawing comparisons to another Winchell-owned and Asmussen-trained colt who was also sired by Not This Time and was also christened with a similarly earthquake-evocative name–Epicenter. Epicenter won the 2022 Risen Star and Louisiana Derby, and appeared on his way to winning the GI Kentucky Derby as the 4-1 favorite until the 80-1 Rich Strike came out of nowhere to collar him in the shadow the wire. Yet I'm going to make a prediction that Magnitude's Derby prep path will more closely resemble the career arc of Mystik Dan (Goldencents), last year's Kentucky Derby upsetter. Recall that Mystik Dan in 2024 put up a 101 Beyer when winning the GIII Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn by eight lengths at 11-1 odds. Then, for the better part of the late winter and early spring, skeptics (rightfully) questioned the repeatability of that lofty figure, because his blowout win occurred over a muddy track in a race where the favorite failed to fire. Bettors only gave him a tepid 4-1 chance to repeat that performance in his next start, the GI Arkansas Derby. Mystik Dan did fall back to earth, so to speak, when regressing to third in that next Derby prep, taking a 12-point Beyer haircut in the process. The Arkansas Derby loss wasn't a totally unexpected, but most Kentucky Derby prognosticators treated the result like Mystik Dan was a radioactive bet going 10 furlongs. That enabled Mystik Dan to coast into Louisville free from unrealistic Beyer-based expectations, and horseplayers let him go at 18-1 odds in the Kentucky Derby, where his well-honed tactical speed and ground-saving post draw from gate three enabled him to ride the rail to a blanket of roses. So let's just say it: Magnitude deserves to be a very logical, regression-to-the-mean play-against in his next start. But looking further into his future, this colt definitely has the potential to be a “wiseguy” rebound contender by the time the first Saturday in May rolls around. In the lone GI Kentucky Oaks points race on Sunday, Runnin N Gunnin (Gun Runner–Charity Belle, by Empire Maker) deposited the top prize of 20 points into her account as she took home the Sunland Park Oaks. Facing a tough customer in 'TDN Rising Star' Maysam (Game Winner) who was the overwhelming favorite on the tote for trainer Bob Baffert, Runnin and Gunnin had plenty of fight in her as the chalk endured a challenging trip during the first half of the race. The Steve Asmussen trainee rolled from the back of the pack to gain the advantage around the far turn and she was full of run down the lane to secure the score. Her stablemate Enchanting (Gun Runner) helped to complete the exacta. Maysam ended up sixth. The final running time was 1:40.09. The top five finishers received the following: 20-10-6-4-2. Lifetime Record: 6-3-0-0. Sales History: KEESEP '23 $250,000. A power outage right before the sixth race Sunday afternoon forced Tampa Bay Downs to cancel the remainder of their card while Aqueduct pre-emptively abandoned the Monday fixture in advance of forecasted high winds. The first reported issues Sunday at Tampa Bay Downs occurred shortly before the start of the sixth race when the power went off as the horses were behind the gate. That contest was cancelled, according to a series of tweets from the official X account, about an hour later but the remaining races were still scheduled to go as refunds were offered on all wagers in the sixth. Eventually, the Tampa account tweeted that all remaining races–six through nine–were cancelled due to the power outage. Simulcasting was also abandoned for the rest of the day and refunds on the 'Oldsmar action' would reportedly be available around noon Monday. Live racing is scheduled to return Wednesday. Due to forecasted severe winds in the New York area Monday, the New York Racing Association (NYRA) announced via press release that the organization made the decision to abandon their Monday card Sunday evening. Simulcasting will not be offered and the facility will also be closed to the public. Live racing will return Friday with a first post at 1:10 p.m. The post Friday Power Outage Forces Tampa Cancellation, Aqueduct Abandons Monday Card Due to High Winds appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
