  5. When the winners of the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards, which are sponsored by Godolphin, were announced, anyone who knew the story of Julianne Stowell could not have been surprised that she won the “Newcomer Award.” It wasn't just that she was thriving as the Client Relations Manager at Niall Brennan Stables, it was how far she had come in such a short time to land that position. Six years earlier, she was locked up at the Lowell Correctional Institution in Ocala, Florida. When it came to her future, she felt like there was nothing that was going to turn her life around. Fast forward to this year and she has never been happier, is sober and living a life that is more fulfilling than she ever expected. “I just love what I do,” Stowell said. “I love the horses, but the people are just as great.” Stowell, 31, was typical of the women who wind up at Lowell. At every turn, she went in the wrong direction, making one mistake after another and hanging out with the wrong crowd. She grew up in Port Canaveral, Florida, which she said was a hot spot during spring break and that the party never quite ended. She made it through high school and was enrolled in college when her grandfather passed away in 2013 after developing Alzheimer's. She was very close to him and his death set her into a spiral that led her down a path where she went back to taking drugs and involving herself with a boyfriend who was a drug dealer. She had her skirmishes here and there with the police but nothing that was so serious that it meant a prison term. That changed in 2017 when she got arrested on a multitude of charges, including theft, drug charges and for fleeing and alluding a high-speed pursuit. She was sentenced to six years. When asked if she ever thought she'd be where she is today, she said: “No way. I was incarcerated. Early on in my sentence, it was hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel. It was hard to see a better picture.” But there was at least one thing at Lowell that gave her a glimmer of hope. Lowell is part of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation's Second Chances program. The women in that program are responsible for taking care of the horses that are at the prison's farm. The goal is not only for them to learn skills that may lead to a good job upon their release but to also flourish because they are entrusted with taking care of an animal, one that has a unique bond with mankind. “From the minute I got to the prison I was interested in the program,” Stowell said. “You start off going to the reception center, which is where everybody goes when they first enter the prison. It is literally right behind the farm where the horses are so you can see the horses up on a hill. I immediately started asking questions. 'What is that over there?' I became aware of the program from the moment I got there and my goal, my mission, was to get involved in the program.” It took four years, and two years before her scheduled release, before she was accepted into the program. When she did, she knew that it had the potential to change her life. “It has helped me with my people skills,” she said. “It got me out of what was my element and led me to being the type of person I don't think I could have been without the program. That's the beauty of it. It has helped me grow as a person. There is a saying that if you love what you do you won't work a day in your life. That is the perfect saying for my profession.” She found out that there was an opening at Brennan Stables, which is operated by Niall and Stephanie Brennan, and Stowell immediately threw her hat in the ring. “To get a job working with horses, that was the goal,” she said. “If it weren't for the Brennans I probably would have struggled a little more with finding a job. The Brennans kind of came out of nowhere. My predecessor here, who was also in the TRF program, she put in her notice. She went out and started her own business. She was leaving so there was an opening at the time of my release. Immediately upon release, I got in a car and the very first place I went was to the Brennans. I interviewed with Niall and Stephanie and they gave me the job.” While her main job is in client relations, which involves keeping the Brennans' clients up to date on the progress of their horses, she says she is willing to do anything needed of her on the farm. “I am basically all over the place,” she said. “I go wherever I am needed to go.” Some 17 months since her release from Lowell she is happy to tell her story. It's about horses, the TRF, the progress that she has made, but also about not giving up and knowing, even at your darkest hour, that there is always a way out. “It was an honor to get the 'Newcomer Award,'” she said. “I am still in awe. It was a huge blessing. It feels good because it shows others, especially those in the TRF program, that anything is possible. Yes, you may have made a mistake, but you paid for it, you did your time and you can still get out there and do something good and be successful and a thriving part of the community. You still have a whole life ahead of you. If you want something go after it. It is attainable.” The post Julianne Stowell Thriving After Graduating from the TRF’s Second Chances Program appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 6. Nearly 20 pregnant broodmares escaped unharmed from what Gardai are treating as the second arson attack on Maurice Burns's Rathasker Stud in County Kildare within the past six months alone. The potentially deadly fire broke out shortly after five o'clock last Friday evening with Burns sharing that the quick thinking of his neighbour, who spotted the blaze initially, followed by the help of his staff at Rathasker Stud is to thank for saving the lives of 18 mares and a teaser pony at the stud. The destruction left behind from the fire at Rathasker Stud | Maurice Burns “Our hay sheds were torched on Friday evening,” Burns explained. “We keep a lot of fodder up there but at this time of year we also keep mares in those sheds. Had one of my neighbours not spotted the smoke when he was passing by those sheds at around 5.25pm, it would have been pretty horrific as the mares would have been caught up in the blaze. As soon as he called me, I pegged it over to that yard and, by the time I arrived, the flames had already started to accelerate.” He added, “The lads in the yard were very good. Some of them had finished work at five o'clock and had gone home to shower or whatever but they came back so quickly when we called them that some of them were nearly in their underpants! We had 18 mares and the teaser in those sheds. If we didn't act fast they were gone, so we're very lucky.” Rathasker Stud is home to stallions Bungle Inthejungle (GB), Coulsty (Ire) and Gregorian (Ire). It is not the only premises in the Kildare area that has fallen victim to arson and Gardai are said to be appealing for witnesses to the latest blaze that took the fire brigade over nine hours to bring under control. Maurice Burns | Tattersalls Ireland Burns said, “The fire brigade came at 6pm and they didn't leave until 3.30am. All of the sheds are gone now and it was fairly traumatic. But it's not the first time that this has happened. It's actually the second time that one of our sheds were torched and the Gardai are following a definite line of enquiry. There have been a good few cases of fires in this area in the past 12 months alone–the late Mrs Weld's house was lying empty and they burned that as well.” He added, “We were unlucky to lose the fodder in the sheds but it could have been so much worse–we could have lost the pregnant mares as well. We're over 40 years here at Rathasker Stud and never had a problem but, in the past six months, have had two big problems. It's shocking, really. There is insurance for all of this but it's still not nice when it happens.” The post Arson Attack Almost Claims The Lives Of 18 Pregnant Broodmares At Rathasker Stud appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 8. Isaac Shelby, who became the first Governor of Kentucky in 1791, is believed to have inspired the Kentucky state motto: 'United we stand, divided we fall'. He sounds like he would have been a good man to run British racing, but the best we can hope for now is that his equine namesake makes as much of a success of his stallion career as the real Shelby did in his career in the military and politics. It quickly became clear that Night Of Thunder (Ire) was a pretty special stallion when he ran away with the first-season sires' championship of 2019. Members of that first crop helped to sustain that impression, like Highfield Princess (Fr), who really came into her own as a five-year-old, and is one of three Group 1 winners from that first batch of Night Of Thunder's stock. The group winners have kept coming, and Isaac Shelby (GB), from his sire's fourth crop, now holds the distinction of being the first son of Night Of Thunder to retire to stud. He is noteworthy for other reasons, too, as Isaac Shelby was among the earliest private purchases for Wathnan Racing back in 2023 and he also becomes the first of that operation's burgeoning band of runners to take up stallion duties. Others will surely follow. Now five, this week marks the official start of Isaac Shelby's covering duties at Newsells Park Stud. He enjoyed an away day to Tattersalls during the February Sale when he joined the stallion parade, and where he appeared not to turn a hair at the prospect of being back out in public with plenty of other horses around. “I've dealt with a few Night Of Thunders and that Dubawi sire-line a fair bit, and I've known that their temperament is generally very good, but this horse seems to have an exceptional nature,” says Julian Dollar, general manager of Newsells Park Stud. “He'd had a year off from when he sustained an injury, so he hadn't been out, but he came into the yard and settled into cage turnout then paddock turnout very easily. He's a very kind horse, and he's just a lovely character.” Bred by Elaine Chivers from the unraced Heliostatic (Ire) mare Kentucky Belle (Ire), Isaac Shelby's dam may have been bred in Ireland but her name, like that of her son, points to her American heritage. The mare's stakes-placed dam Mine Inning (Mining) was a juvenile winner who went on to produce nine winners from her 11 runners, including the GII scorer Ramazutti (Honor Grades). In fact, Mine Inning's first two dams also produced a heap of winners: 19 between them from 22 runners, with a liberal sprinkling of black type across the page. A shade over 16hh, Isaac Shelby should suit most mares physically. He is inbred 3×3 to Galileo (Ire), the sire of Heliostatic and of Night Of Thunder's dam Forest Storm (Ire). “We think the 3×3 inbreeding to Galileo is a positive,” Dollar says. “I think you can breed him to Sadler's Wells-line mares, which has obviously worked very well with Dubawi and Night Of Thunder, but if we treat him like a Night Of Thunder, we know that they work very well with with Nureyev and Pivotal. You've got Economics, who is out of a Peintre Celebre mare.” He continues, “We know that Night Thunder works particularly well with Danzig, and you've got [G1 Fillies' Mile winner] Desert Flower, who is out of a Danzig-line mare and is by Night Of Thunder. We know that Night Of Thunder works very well with Danehill, and of course with his Galileo in the pedigree, you'd imagine that would be a very good combination for Isaac Shelby. “Dubawi has worked with Monsun, Sharpen Up. I mean, the great thing about that sire-line is it works with pretty much any dam-line.” A £92,000 purchase at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale by Sam Sangster, Isaac Shelby was out early at two for trainer Brian Meehan, winning easily on debut at Newbury in May before going on to land the G2 Superlative Stakes in the year between Native Trail (GB) and City Of Troy winning the same race. His grandsire Dubawi also won the Superlative back in 2004. Well beaten in the G1 Dewhurst Stakes, he bounced back on his three-year-old debut to take the G3 Greenham Stakes from Charyn (Ire) during a memorable race in which the favourite – and subsequent 2,000 Guineas winner – Chaldean (GB) parted company with Frankie Dettori on exiting the stalls. From there, Isaac Shelby travelled to Longchamp for the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains. Dollar adds, “When he came out as a three-year-old, he won brilliantly on his debut in the Greenham Stakes, [which is] obviously a major Classic trial. He won that by three lengths from multiple Group 1-winning miler Charyn, with the rest of the field miles behind. So his obvious next step was to go for a Guineas, and he came within a short-head of winning a Guineas. He was in front, but he just got done on the line. He's a proper seven-to-eight-furlong horse. He's got that speed, he's got that precocity, so he's got an awful lot to offer.” With Wathnan Racing already boarding a number of mares at Newsells Park Stud, the arrival of Isaac Shelby to stand alongside Nathaniel (Ire), Without Parole (GB) and A'Ali (Ire) opens up a new avenue for the Qatari enterprise which has the Group 1-winning sprinter Kind Of Blue (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}) among its burgeoning string of horses in training. “We're excited to be standing the only son of Night of Thunder, but the fact that he's owned by and we're doing it in partnership with Wathnan Racing is very important,” Dollar says. “These guys, I hope, are here to stay and they could have a major positive influence on the UK breeding and racing industry. They already have, and they have a lot to offer. “To work with two guys like Ollie Tait and Richard Brown is an absolute dream. They're so easy and they know the industry inside and out. They trust us to do a decent job. It's all done on yes and no on a phone call.” He adds, “They're going to support the horse, more so probably in the ring in the early days, as they're building up their broodmare band, so they're just starting in that regard. He means a lot to them. He was one of the first horses they bought – I think he probably was the first one they bought to to race on with. So I think he's important for them and they will support him accordingly.” The post Isaac Shelby a First for Night Of Thunder and Wathnan Racing appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 9. We are now in our second full year of operation at Stonereath Farm. As our Kentucky division, it has allowed Blue Diamond Stud to diversify and is now home to 16 of our mares. We are very lucky to have an excellent team to oversee the farm, headed by our CEO Ted Voute, farm manager Jenn Laidlaw and financial controller Erin Dilger. TDN chats with Imad Al Sagar to find out about the operation's mating plans for 2025 in America. ANGLE OF ATTACK, 7, Maclean's Music–Bourbon Warfare, by Colonel John. In foal to Bolt d'Oro. Visits Practical Joke. Angle Of Attack is a young stakes-winning mare. We used Practical Joke last season on another young stakes winner, Dancing Kiki (Blame), who is being rested this year. Practical Joke is going from strength to strength and we were keen to support him again with this mare who should really suit him physically. When we visited Ashford Stud in November, we also had a good look at Domestic Product. It's hard not to be impressed with him–he's very good looking with size and scope and we thought he'd suit another of our mares, New Jazz. She's a winning daughter of Scat Daddy, a line that Practical Joke has obviously done very well with in Chile. ARWA, 11, Holy Roman Emperor–Another Storm, by Gone West. In foal to Elite Power. Visits Blame. Arwa is a winning half-sister to European champion Order Of St George and a granddaughter of American champion 2-year-old Storm Song. It's a versatile family that is effective on both sides of the Atlantic, turf and dirt. Blame's stud record is underpinned by a similar versatility, plus he has a good relationship with mares carrying Danzig and Danehill. We are keen to bring in more Roberto blood into our stock and have regularly used Blame to that effect in recent years. Both of Arwa's runners to date have won and her 2-year-old filly by Wootton Bassett goes to Andrew Balding. BEAUTE CACHEE, 6, Literato–Sign And Seal by Hurricane Run. Visits Justify. Beaute Cachee was a top-class racemare who won the GI Jenny Wiley Stakes and the GII Ballston Spa Stakes. She was also very tough, winning six races overall from two to five years. So we were delighted to add her to Blue Diamond in November–especially as being a daughter of Literato, she descends from Grey Sovereign via Kendor. Our strategy is to develop a broodmare band built on diverse bloodlines, we were keen to bring this particular line into that and physically Beaute Cachee is what you'd expect from a granddaughter of Kendor. She's going to receive every chance, firstly by sending her to Justify, a stallion we've already done well with as the breeder of Wonderful Justice. With bases in Newmarket and Kentucky, it's appealing that the resulting progeny should work in either Europe or the US. BLUE DIAMOND, 6, Galileo–Pearling by Storm Cat. In foal to Siyouni. Visits Justify. A homebred sister to our multiple GI winner Decorated Knight and out of Pearling, a sister to Giant's Causeway and Gleneagles' dam You'resothrilling. The cross of Justify over Galileo has obviously been very successful and we hope to follow that pattern with this mare from one of our most successful families. Blue Diamond's first foal, a 2-year-old colt by Siyouni, will be trained by John and Thady Gosden. CHANTRY VIEW ROAD, 4, Quality Road–Molly Corbin by War Front. Visits McKinzie. A new addition, Chantry View Road is out of a half-sister to champion Peeping Fawn and from a family previously associated with Stonereath being a direct descendant of Best In Show, who resided at the farm while it was under the ownership of Darrell and Lindy Brown. It's obviously one of the deepest and most international families in the stud book and we're going to give her every chance, starting with McKinzie. What he has achieved with his first crop is impressive and we were keen to support him. CHILI FLAG, 6, Cityscape–Flag Day by Pivotal. Visits Not This Time. We were thrilled to add Chili Flag in November. She has a similar profile to Beaute Cachee in that she was a very sound, hard-knocking GI winner, in her case when winning the Just A Game Stakes at Saratoga, who belongs to a sire line–Sharpen Up–that is unfortunately becoming harder to find. Chili Flag is a strong mare quite typical of her sire Cityscape and his sire Selkirk, who continues to remain very relevant through his daughters as we've seen again in recent years through the likes of Elmalka and Inspiral. We've been supporters of Not This Time for several seasons, impressed with what he's done in both the US and Europe off lower fees, and feel he should suit this mare both physically and on paper. There is also the potential for the progeny to work in either the US or Europe, especially as Chili Flag is a granddaughter of Blue Duster, a brilliant 2-year-old in her day for David Loder, from the good Blue Note family. DAWN OF HOPE, 12, Mastercraftsman–Sweet Firebird by Sadler's Wells. In foal to Justify. Visits Blame. Another pencilled in this year to tap into Roberto blood via Blame. Listed winner Dawn Of Hope is a valued member of our band whose first three foals have all won. Andre Fabre has her 3-year-old filly, Gaugamela (Sea The Stars), and will train her 2-year-old colt by Pinatubo. Blame, being a versatile sire who has been effective with European type Danzig-line mares before, should suit, plus the mating brings in inbreeding to Special. FLORET, 9, Galileo–Ventura by Spectrum. In foal to Justify. Visits Not This Time. A half-sister to Moonlight Cloud from the Doff The Derby family whose first foal Shamran (Kingman) won for us last year. We have retained her third foal, a 2-year-old filly by Palace Pier, to go to Ralph Beckett. She has a yearling filly by Blame to follow. As outlined above, we are keen to make use of Not This Time given his upward curve and how versatile he is when it comes to the US or Europe, turf or dirt etc. Plus he's produced several stakes winners to Sadler's Wells-line mares already. Free Look, I'm Wonderful, and Dawn Of Hope | Courtesy Blue Diamond Stud FREE LOOK, 5, Tapit–Wild Mint by Medaglia d'Oro. In foal to Gun Runner. Visits Curlin. A Grade II-placed relation to Violence, Free Look will visit Curlin. The success of the Curlin – A.P. Indy cross is well known and more specifically through Tapit via the likes of Cody's Wish and Tenfold. Free Look is a very good-looking mare full of quality who was a good 2-year-old, so there's plenty of reasons to think she will complement Curlin. With her race record and pedigree, especially being by such a dominant broodmare sire in Tapit, we have high hopes for her. I'M WONDERFUL, 9, Giant's Causeway–Rebridled Dreams by Unbridled's Song. In foal to Tapit. Visits Gun Runner. A well-bred young stakes producer. I'm Wonderful is a sister to GI winner Carpe Diem whose first foal, Wonderful Justice (Justify), won the Black Gold Stakes for us. Her 3-year-old filly Sashay Away (Curlin) also won on debut last year and she has a yearling colt by Blame to come. She's still only 9 but being already proven, she warrants going to the best. By sending her to Gun Runner, we inbreed to Giant's Causeway–however the fact that Gunite, one of Gun Runner's top horses, is inbred to him gave us the confidence to head down that route. MANASAROVA, 12, More Than Ready–Manaahil by Mr Greeley. In foal to Blame. Visits Karakontie. Dam of French stakes winner Sicilian Defense and stakes-placed herself, Manasarova heads to Karakontie, a proven GI stallion who we feel consistently punches above his weight. This mating mirrors the cross that produced She Feels Pretty while on broader terms, it's notable how well he's done when more Hail To Reason blood is added, Princess Grace and Sugoi being good examples. NOURIYA, 19, Danehill Dancer–Majestic Sakeena by King's Best. Visits Justify. Our first homebred stakes winner, Nouriya's first foal was our G2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes winner Aljazzi, whose Frankel filly sold for 4,400,000gns last year. She's a mare who continues to deserve the best and Justify fits the bill, especially given how effective he's already proven to be with mares carrying Danehill. OCEAN SAFARI, 6, Temple City–Media Access by Devil's Bag. Foaled colt by Not This Time. Visits Tapit. Ocean Safari is a stakes-winning daughter of Temple City who joined Stonereath in November 2023. We have it in the back of our mind to utilize some of these older stallions while we still can and Tapit obviously fits that bracket. He's perfect as a proven option for a young mare and particularly in this instance in that Ocean Safari's pedigree is a combination of two lines of Hail To Reason, an influence Tapit has fared well with. QUEEN OFTHE TEMPLE, 7, Temple City–Queenameina by Read The Footnotes. In foal to Uncle Mo. Visits War Front. The second of our stakes-winning Temple City mares and a particularly tough one typical of the Dynaformer line who is from a hard-knocking family. War Front still remains among the best when it comes to the figures, such as his 11% black-type winners to foals of racing age, and not only should he suit this mare physically but there's also his well known affinity for mares carrying Roberto blood. TAIGA, 6, Bernardini–Winter Forest by Forestry. In foal to Curlin. Visits McKinzie. We have been looking for a Bernardini mare for several years and were delighted to add Taiga, a young winning relation to Arabian Knight, at the Keeneland November Sale. We're keen to support McKinzie after the success of his first 2-year-olds and Taiga seemed the natural choice seeing that Chancer McPatrick is also out of a Bernardini mare. 16. Some important amendments have been made to the Entain 2YO Bonus Scheme for 2025. The Terms and Conditions have been agreed to after a comprehensive review following the opening 12 months of the scheme. Effective immediately, all 2YO Pacers and Trotters winning their maiden race (in a 2YO only race) will continue to win a $12,000 bonus for their connections – $8000 to the owner, $4000 for the breeder. The big change is that the $6000 bonus paid out for either running second to a previous bonus winner or being the first non-winning 2YO pacer and trotter home in a ratings race will be discontinued. “We have more and more two-year-olds racing all the time and HRNZ in conjunction with Entain are keen to support this trend throughout 2025,” says Harness Racing New Zealand’s Head of Racing and Wagering Matthew Peden “The number of two-year-olds that raced increased from 18 to 21 per cent of the crop in 2024 and that number will only rise this year.” In 2024 around $1.15m in bonuses was paid out. “We believe the revised terms and conditions are a lot simpler and are targeted,” says Peden, “you win you first race you get the bonus, and I am mindful that we will need to provide opportunities relative to the amount of two-year-olds wanting to race.” For more information or any queries contact matthew.peden@hrnz.co.nz Entain 2YO Bonus T&Cs click here View the full article

  20. Chris Waller’s Gr.2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) stars will be his headline acts at Randwick this Saturday, but the champion trainer has more-than-handy support acts resuming in the day’s other $300,000 Group Twos. Cambridge Stud-owned Joliestar (Zoustar) has been nominated for the Apollo, alongside Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock), Fangirl (Sebring) and Atishu (NZ) (Savabeel), but is primed to kick off her campaign in the Gr.2 Expressway Stakes (1200m). The four-year-old is one of three Waller entries for the Expressway, accompanying likely runner Olentia (Zoustar) and Lindermann (Lonhro), who is also nominated for the Apollo Stakes. Joliestar is a Group One winner at 1600m, via the 2023 Thousand Guineas, but was an explosive winner of the Gr.3 Show County Quality (1200m) first-up last time in and was a hard-luck story in The Everest (1200m) despite finishing in seventh position. The Hall of Fame trainer remains unsure where the daughter of Zoustar best fits in the autumn picture and is looking to the first two runs of the campaign to enlighten him. “We’re still working out whether we’ll get her out to a mile,” Waller said. “She’s got a lot of speed and I’d say we’ll go to the Canterbury Stakes second-up. “If she wins that, then she’ll probably go to the TJ (Gr.1, 1200m), if not she’ll probably head down the mares’ path.” The A$750,000 Gr.1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) will be run at Randwick on March 8 with the A$3 million Gr.1 T J Smith Stakes (1200m) at the same track on April 5. The ‘mares races’ Waller is considering with Joliestar are the A$1m Coolmore Classic (1500m), a handicap event at Rosehill on March 15, and the weight-for-age A$1m Queen Of The Turf (1600m) at Randwick on April 12. Magic Time is the other Group One (Hellbent) winner nominated for the Expressway Stakes, while Joe Pride’s Gr.1 King Charles III Stakes (1600m) winner Ceolwulf (NZ) (Tavistock) is the biggest name outside the Waller team in the Apollo Stakes entries. 21. Gun New Zealand three-year-old Savaglee (NZ) (Savabeel) got his first taste of Australian racing on home soil on Saturday when placing behind Aussie raiders Here To Shock (NZ) (Shocking) and Bosustow (Blue Point) in the Gr.1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa, and his connections are now looking forward to testing his talents across the Tasman. Raced by The Oaks Stud, Savaglee has been an unstoppable force against his own age group this season, winning five of his six starts, including the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m), before being tested at weight-for-age for the first time over the weekend. The Oaks Stud General Manager Rick Williams was satisfied with the performance of the Pam Gerard-trained colt and said he didn’t get all favours in the running. “We knew they (Here To Shock and Bosustow) were good horses and it is always hard for a three-year-old at weight-for-age. It was a hell of a race and I am very proud of the horse,” Williams said. “He went a little bit keenly once Babylon Berlin crossed him. He usually drops the bit and relaxes nowadays, but he was a little bit fierce and just got held up a for a while in the straight, which was probably the difference of running second. “He would never have beaten the winner, who was brilliantly ridden by Nash Rawiller and sat outside us, and older horses can lean on you a bit and dominate three-year-olds. “It was his first time against the older horses, so it was a good experience for him, and I am sure he will improve off it.” Williams is now looking forward to heading to Melbourne with his colt where he will take his place in the Gr.1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 8. “I am certain now that he prefers a mile to 1400m and we are going on to the Australian Guineas, there is no reason not to go,” he said. “The form analysts are telling me we are right in the mix. I think he has dropped down to third favourite, but the bookmakers don’t worry me, I am quite sure he will go over there and he will be right in it.” With his $45,000 cheque from the weekend, Savaglee has now surpassed $1 million in earnings, and Williams said that is a credit to the enhanced prizemoney in New Zealand over the last 18 months. “Savaglee has gone past the million-dollar mark already just racing in New Zealand, so it gives you some idea of what the improvement in prizemoney means to owners throughout the country,” he said. “It always takes a while to filter through. The overall economy here and worldwide has got its problems, and there is not the disposable income around. The turnover figures are fantastic, it has gone against the trend, and all credit to Entain.” While Savaglee has been the flagbearer for The Oaks Stud’s racing team this season, Williams has high hopes for a couple of other three-year-olds. “We have got a really nice filly caller Cypher with Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott,” Williams said. “She won her last start and is running in a special conditions maiden at Matamata (on Saturday). I think she is a very progressive filly. “I think Alaskan is a chance in the Oaks (Gr.1, 2400m). She just got caught a bit flat-footed when they sprinted in the David and Karyn Ellis Fillies Classic (Gr.2, 2000m). Trentham will suit her and the mile-and-a-half will suit her better.” Williams is also tipping a big future for last start Gr.3 Colin 2YO Classic (1200m) runner-up Tajana. “She is a filly that will go forward from here and be a lovely three-year-old,” he said. Meanwhile, The Oaks Stud tasted stakes success as breeders over the weekend when evergreen gelding Harlech (NZ) (Darci Brahma) took out the Listed Hazlett Stakes (1400m) at Wingatui. Out of Group One performer Obsessive, Harlech is by former The Oaks Stud stallion Darci Brahma and is a half-brother to stakes performer Obsessive. He was purchased out of The Oaks Stud’s 2018 Book 1 Yearling Sale draft by bloodstock agent Paul Moroney for $100,000 and went on to join Ballymore Stables, run by his brother Mike. Harlech went on to become a top three-year-old in New Zealand when trained by Mike Moroney and Pam Gerard, winning two and placing in four of his seven starts, including victory in the Gr.2 James And Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes (1400m), and runner-up efforts in the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m), Gr.1 Levin Classic (1600m) and Listed Uncle Remus Stakes (1400m). While he went on to place in the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) and last season’s Gr.3 Canterbury Gold Cup (2000m), Harlech hadn’t added to his single stakes success as a three-year-old until Saturday where he dominated his rivals to take out the Hazlett Stakes by 3-1/2 lengths. “He is such a great, old horse,” Williams said. “He ran second to Catalyst in the 2000 Guineas way back in 2019 and I have always loved the horse. It was nice that we bred the quinella (in the Guineas) and the one we kept the ownership of won the race. “He has been a wonderful horse for the owners, and he is still going strong. I didn’t think he could win from that outside barrier (11), but he got up for them, they are great owners the Fletcher family.” The Oaks Stud are still breeding from his dam, Obsession, and Williams said she has been an asset for the Cambridge farm. “Obsession has been a great mare. She was a Group Two winner and Group One placed,” he said. “She has been a terrific producer and it’s a great family. She has got a Proisir colt at foot and is in-foal to U S Navy Flag.” View the full article
  22. Bill Thurlow had plenty to celebrate over the weekend across the North Island, with a standout performance by Whangaehu in the Gr.1 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa followed by an impressive maiden winner at Otaki. On Saturday, Thurlow travelled from his Waverley base with two runners for the elite-level feature in Whangaehu and Field Of Gold. The former was coming off a victory in the Gr.3 Trentham Stakes (2100m), and at his first attempt at weight-for-age, he came from near-last to storm into third place, recording the fastest closing sectionals of the $700,000 feature. The son of Proisir joined Thurlow’s stable in the spring of 2023, and despite his near-faultless preparation this time in, he caught the TAB bookmakers and his trainer slightly by surprise. “His performance was actually quite unbelievable, he ran the fastest sectionals in the last four sets,” Thurlow said. “We knew he would get back, I was hoping not too far, but he is inclined to do that a bit these days. He doesn’t really want to get going early and it’s quite hard to change their pattern, these older horses. We did plan to have him a couple of pairs closer, but that didn’t happen. “His run was very good, he hit the line strong so it’s encouraging going forward.” Whangaehu ran seventh in last year’s Gr.2 Barfoot and Thompson Auckland Cup (3200m), and while Thurlow is considering another attempt at the race on March 8, his 100 rating makes him the likely topweight in a field that includes a number of Australian nominations. “It’s just a matter of where we go now is the hardest option,” he said. “We decided to go weight-for-age to see how he would cope with it, and also, he’s quite high in the handicaps now and there aren’t a great number of highly-rated stayers in the country. If we were to go to the Auckland Cup, he’ll likely carry topweight. “We wanted to see if he’d fit in at weight-for-age and he’s done that very well, but going forward, he may go back to a handicap or the Auckland Cup. We’re not too sure and are yet to make a plan.” In the TAB Futures market for the $600,000 showpiece, Whangaehu is rated an $8 chance on the fourth line of betting, with About Time and Tijanis sharing favouritism at $5. Closer to home on Sunday, Thurlow was rapt to see his mare Champagne Linda deliver on her early promise when collecting her maiden in The Tele Otaki Maiden (1300m). A four-year-old by Darci Brahma, Champagne Linda finished runner-up on five occasions, including at her fresh-up run this campaign at Wanganui. Starting a narrow favourite over Meloni, the mare flew the barriers and was in front early at a leisurely tempo, before Turn It Up pressed forward and put the pressure on. Having had the perfect run in his trail, Champagne Linda hit the lead at the 200m and only continued to extend that margin to the line, taking the race by 2-1/2 lengths to Kingsford. “She was very, very good, she’s been threatening to do that for a while but this season she’s just come back a lot stronger,” Thurlow said. “She only went under by a tiny margin at her first start this prep and has improved off that, so it’s really good. The way she won, it won’t be her last. “We won’t be in any hurry to step her up further, she might go 1400 next start and eventually she may get out to a mile, but we won’t be in a rush to get there.” Out of Pins mare Love Sophia, Champagne Linda was bred by Harvey and Linda Green’s Huntingdale Lodge 2012 Ltd. The Wanganui couple race her alongside Benjamin Green and Rose Sweeney. View the full article
  23. Dual Group One winner La Crique (NZ) (Vadamos) continued her consistent run of form when finishing runner-up to El Vencedor in Saturday’s Gr.1 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa, and she will now be set for another elite-level 2000m test. The daughter of Vadamos has been in a purple patch of form since winning last year’s Gr.1 Otaki-Maori WFA Classic (1600m) at Otaki, winning two and finishing runner-up in five of her subsequent seven starts, much to the delight of her trainers Simon and Katrina Alexander. “She is nothing but consistent and no one can bag her on that,” Katrina Alexander said. “A lot of horses will put in a good run and might struggle for the next few, but every time we have lined her up in her last five or six starts she has delivered.” Alexander was pleased with La Crique’s efforts on Saturday and said she has come through the run well. “It was a good effort considering the gap between runs and going straight into Group One level at 2000m technically fresh-up again. Especially against a horse like El Vencedor who is in a super patch of form and having had recent racing,” Alexander said. “She got held up on the rail there too and she had to waste a bit of energy trying to get herself out as opposed to being able to go forward. With all that stacked up I thought it was a really good run. I was very proud of her effort. “(She was) a little bit scratchy off the firm ground on the Sunday morning but come the afternoon she was very bright, and she is very bright in herself today (Monday). She has pulled up very well.” La Crique has finished second in her last three outings, all at Group One level, and will bid to go one better when she heads to Ellerslie on Champions Day, March 8, to tackle the Gr.1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m). “She goes through to the Bonecrusher and we won’t need to do a lot in-between,” Alexander said. “It will be a bit of a gap (between runs), but that is the way she is best, she is not a horse that can routinely go (racing every) two weeks. “That will be our next main target and we will see where we go from there.” View the full article
  24. Rich Hill Stud’s senior statesman Shocking again emphasised his potency and versatility when proving the dominant figure in Te Rapa’s flagship events on Saturday. His sons El Vencedor (NZ) and Here To Shock (NZ) produced commanding performances in the Gr.1 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) and Gr.1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m) respectively for a memorable weight-for-age double. “You don’t take these things for granted, but for one stallion to win two Group Ones on the same card with one over 2000m and one over 1400m is a pretty unusual occurrence,” Rich Hill’s John Thompson said. “Both horses produced career-high performances, there’s no doubt about that.” The Stephen Marsh-trained El Vencedor doubled his elite level tally with previous success in the Gr.1 New Zealand Stakes (2000m) on his CV while Lindsay Park’s headline act had been a past multiple Group Three winner. The Ben, Will and JD Hayes-trained Here To Shock provided Shocking with his fifth individual Group One winner, joining El Vencedor, I’m Thunderstruck, Fanatic and Defibrillate. “After the race, I had a chance to catch up with Nash Rawiller and he also felt it was a career high performance,” Thompson said. “He said the way he’s going he’ll be competitive in the Group Ones in Sydney with the right draws and track conditions.” The six-year-old El Vencedor and Here To Shock, a seven-year-old, are prime examples of Shocking’s progeny. “Over the years, they have showed they get better and better,” Thompson said. “They all seem to keep improving and even his lesser horses are still running around and competitive as seven and eight-year-olds. “They’re not all going to reach the level of El Vencedor and Here To Shock, but he’s always got a good horse and provides longevity. “I think he’s an under-rated stallion and gets forgotten a bit when people are breeding their mares. “He was a very popular horse numbers wise, since then he hasn’t had massive numbers, but he’s certainly had an awful lot of very good horses. He’s a proven stallion and they’re hard to find.” A son of Street Cry and the Danehill mare Maria Di Castiglia, Shocking retired to Rich Hill off the back of a glittering career that earned him victories in the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup (3200m), the Gr.1 Australian Cup (2000m) and the Gr.2 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m). The rising 20-year-old has always proved an easy customer to have on the farm. “He’s a great horse to deal with and very much a routine animal,” Thompson said. “He’s a lovely horse, very kind and trustworthy and you forget he’s a stallion at times. He’s also a great horse for young people who want to handle stallions and learn.” View the full article

She was excellent first-up at Wyong first-up before heading to the Gold Coast second-up, putting on a gutsy display to score by two lengths in the Listed Magic Millions Cup (1400m). Jason Collett showed plenty of confidence in his mare tackling Group level for the first time in her four-year career, taking a mid-field sit to remain on the outside of race favourite Olentia ($2.60). It was the Matthew Dale-trained Penthouse ($9.00) leading them up on a strong temp throughout the 1400m, while Either Oar ($10.00) wanted to put herself in the firing line early doors. The Melbourne raider C’est Magique ($5.00) was able to gain the perfect economical run just in behind the leading pair and seemingly got every chance to let down under Tim Clark. When the whips were cracking, Jason Collett pulled Semana to the middle of the course, while Tommy Berry on Olentia attempted to sneak along the inside running rail, possibly stopping her momentum at a crucial stage. 2023: Schiller guides Po Kare Kare to Group 3 triumph Warwick Farm trainer Bryce Heys has a small but in-form team and the roll continued when four-year-old mare Po Kare Kare scored a comfortable victory in the 2023 Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) at Randwick. The victory provided Heys with his first Group success, with the New Zealander having previously trained Spieth to a Listed win in 2016 prior to multiple Group One placings. Despite entering the race off a rating of just 74, Heys was keen to run Po Kare Kare third-up in the Group Three feature and under a good ride by apprentice Tyler Schiller, the daughter of Savabeel proved an easy winner. 2022: Snapdancer a class above It was a delayed start to the 2022 Group 3 Triscay Stakes at Royal Randwick, but a cool, calm and collected Snapdancer took it all in her stride and gave her rivals a galloping lesson in the 1200m feature. The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained mare started a well-backed $2.90 favourite in the Group 3 event, and the punters got it bang on, as she romped in by 2.66 lengths. The five-year-old mare was dominant when winning the $1 million Magic Millions Fillies & Mares race at the Gold Coast on January 15, and she backed that up at Randwick under James McDonald once again. After finding the front from barrier five, Snapdancer never really looked in doubt, as she cruised into the straight under a strong hold, before letting down with her brilliant turn of foot.
