What 2025 CF Orr Stakes Where Caulfield Racecourse – Melbourne, Victoria When Saturday, February 8, 2025 Prizemoney $750,000 Distance 1400m Conditions Weight For Age 2024 winner Mr Brightside (4) | T: Ben, Will & JD Hayes | J: Craig Williams (59kg) Visit Dabble The 101st running of the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) headlines the massive 10-race meeting at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday. A quality field of 10 will duke it out for the $750,000 on offer, with one of Australia’s best, Mr Brightside, set to resume from a spell. Can Mr Brightside go back-to-back and become the fifth multiple winner of the race? Or is their a bit of an upset brewing? Read on to see our full race preview and top tips for the 2025 CF Orr Stakes. CF Orr Stakes 2025 odds Mr Brightside has been installed as a $2.50 favourite with horse racing betting sites as he bids to add a ninth Group 1 victory to an already glowing record. The Ciaron Maher-trained Another Wil ($4.40) and Australia Stakes winner Schwarz ($6.50) have been backed in early markets as they push for their maiden victory at the top level. Caulfield Guineas winner Private Life ($8.50) is the only other runner under double figures, with previous Group 1 winners Southport Tycoon ($14) and Pinstriped ($19) garnering each-way support early. CF Orr Stakes 2025 speed map Having led throughout when claiming the Australia Stakes, Schwarz looks to be the leader in the 2025 CF Orr Stakes, with market rival Another Wil likely to land in a prominent role throughout. Private Life (1) and Mr Brightside (8) will look for a stalking position, with the likes of Freedom Rally, Semana and Pinstriped all searching for a midfield spot. On the back of a genuine tempo, Southport Tycoon and Steparty will be making their runs from the rear when the whips are cracking. Continue reading for HorseBetting’s top selections and $100 betting strategy for the 2025 CF Orr Stakes. CF Orr Stakes 2025 preview & form Despite being a $14 quote after the barrier draw, Southport Tycoon looks to represent great value in Saturday’s feature. The two-time Group 1 winner failed to fire first-up in the Australia Stakes over 1200m at Moonee Valley, but considering his second-up record (3: 2-1-0), he is bound to have improved from that effort. If Southport Tycoon can find the right run in transit under Mark Zahra, he has the ability to knock off Mr Brightside and the rest of his rivals. If there is any chinks in Mr Brightside’s armour, it is when he returns from a spell (8: 3-2-1). There have been times where he’s been left flat-footed when resuming, and at $2.50 with BlondeBet, he looks like a favourite punters can take on. Another Wil and Schwarz both look like Group 1 winners in waiting, and with the right run they will be fighting out the finish. If Mr Brightside is not at his best, it shapes as a cracking edition of the CF Orr Stakes. Grail Seeker’s (NZ) (Iffraaj) season has painted a pretty picture so far for Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott, with her two starts in two Group Ones resulting in two wins. The imposing daughter of Iffraaj lined up a $32 chance in the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) back in September, but she didn’t know that, schooling a hot field and doing the same as favourite four months later in the Gr.1 Telegraph (1200m). On Saturday, Grail Seeker will likely hold the same favouritism in the Gr.1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa, coming off a breathtaking performance that took even her trainers a little bit by surprise. “We hoped she would go and perform like that (in the Telegraph), and her performance was even stronger than we would’ve thought,” Scott said. “She was really strong. “There were a lot of things that went her way that day, a good bit of give in the ground and a roomy straight helped her a lot. She probably exceeded our expectations that day with the way she won.” Following their successful method throughout the season, O’Sullivan and Scott opted to bypass the Gr.1 Railway (1200m) and present a fresh Grail Seeker in Saturday’s $500,000 feature. “She had an exhibition gallop there last Friday around Ellerslie, but since the Telegraph, we’ve backed off her,” Scott said. “She’s maintained her racing weight all the way through, so we haven’t had to do a lot with her in between. “She is quite a laidback mare, but from time to time, she can be pretty big and powerful and explosive. You’ve always got to be on your guard with her, but most of the time, she’s quite a gentle giant. “We’ll ride her where she’s comfortable on Saturday, we won’t be pushing her out of her comfort zone and where she finds her rhythm. Hopefully she can quicken off that, we won’t be reinventing the wheel.” The mare will be joined at Te Rapa by stablemate Waitak (NZ) (Proisir), last year’s Railway winner who recorded the fastest closing sectionals in the race a fortnight ago. “We were really pleased, he ran the fastest last 600 of the race, but they probably just didn’t quite go quick enough for him to get over the top of them,” Scott said. “He’s going very well, he’s raced well at Te Rapa before and the step-up in distance should help him, with a good gate. He’s a consistent, top-class racehorse that always goes out there and performs well. If the race is run to suit, he’ll be in it.” A filly stepping into new territory on Saturday will be Prosegur (NZ) (Proisir), having her first attempt over ground in the Gr.2 David and Karyn Ellis Fillies’ Classic (2000m). The daughter of Proisir was Group Two-placed over 1400m this term and put in a solid performance from back in the field in the $1.5 million Karaka Millions 3YO (1600m). “Craig Williams (jockey) got off and said he believed she raced really well that night, but was looking for more ground, which has led us this way in going 2000m,” Scott said. “She’s had a good fortnight, and if anything, she’d had a fair gap between runs leading into the Karaka Millions Mile. She’s a fit filly having her fit attempt over ground, she’s genetically bred to get this trip so we’re hoping she’ll stay well.” A fast-improving Ever Charm (NZ) (U S Navy Flag) will get an opportunity to pick up a lucrative stake in the $350,000 Sir Patrick Hogan Karapiro Classic (1600m). A maidener at the start of the season, Ever Charm has been unbeaten in two starts this term and is among the highest-rated in the field. “This race fitted in nicely for him, we gave him a good while to get over his fresh-up win and he backed it up with a good 65,” Scott said. “It’s good timing and he’s raced well at Te Rapa. “He’s a horse that has benefitted from a good bit of patience, his progression from three to four, like so many, has produced a much stronger horse. He’s from a family that does take time, he’s really come on.” The same can be said for Phoebe Buffay (NZ) (Sweynesse), a four-year-old mare who collected a deserved maiden success last Monday at Tauranga. Shooting for back-to-back wins, she will take her place in the TAB 1200. “That was a really good, confidence building win that she had been building to for a long while,” Scott said. “It was great to see her get what she deserved, because she had been running very good races. “She’s another four-year-old that has appreciated the time, she’ll quicken well again. We probably look at her as one of our best winning chances of the day.” Smokeshow (NZ) (Contributer) and Miss Bo Peep (NZ) (Astern) are both engaged in the Dr John Southworth Memorial Vase (1200m), with the former looking to bounce back to his usual flying form. “On his day, he’s got a bucket of ability,” Scott said. “He just gallops better left-handed and he got a bit confused last start, he probably got out to a distance far enough for him as well. “We’ve freshened him, back to six furlongs with the hot speed on, he should quicken well. “We just gave Miss Bo Peep a wee break over Christmas after she won a couple in a row quickly, she went home to Wentwood Grange and had a lovely spell. She’s a mare that will get up to open company and on the fresh side, we think she’ll sprint well.” Prior to Legends Day, the Wexford team will have a number of runners at Tauranga on Friday, including the talented Little Bit Of Love (NZ) (Time Test) coming off of a fifth placing in the Gr.2 Rich Hill Mile (1600m). “He’s another that we’ve freshened since New Year’s Day, we’re looking to kick off his late summer campaign and build towards the autumn miles, an Easter (Gr.3, 1600m),” Scott said. “He might be in need of Friday’s run over 1200m, but once he gets over to the 14 and a mile, he’s going to be much more competitive. It seems to be his time of the year post-New Year, so he’ll have a good autumn again.” The son of Time Test will be ridden by Warren Kennedy in the EMAC Electrical 1200, while Ngakau Hailey will provide two kilograms of weight relief to the in-form Tanganyika (NZ) (Ace High) in the Super Liquor Greerton 1400. “He’s racing really well this season, he lacked a wee bit of luck last start when he got off balance, but back around Tauranga again, he doesn’t have to improve much to be winning,” Scott said. “He looks particularly well at the present time, so we’re expecting him to race really well.” View the full article

Grail Seeker will contest the Group 1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa on Saturday. What Moonee Valley Races Where Moonee Valley Racecourse – Gate 2 Feehan Ave, Moonee Ponds VIC 3039 When Friday, February 5, 2025 First Race 6:15pm AEDT Visit Dabble Moonee Valley Racing Club will host another very competitive eight-race card on Friday night, with the first event scheduled to jump at 6:15pm AEDT. Warm and dry conditions are forecast in the lead-up to the meeting, and the track is expected to remain in the Good 4 rating that was posted at the time of acceptances. The rail will be pushed out to the +5m position for the entire circuit. Best Bet at Moonee Valley: Just Like Gaby Just Like Gaby was very unlucky when finishing second at this track and trip on January 24, as she was held up behind runners on the home turn and flashed home. The daughter of Pierata trialled up well before her first start of the preparation, which led her to be heavily backed with horse racing bookmakers. From barrier three, Just Like Gaby will receive the run of the race behind the speed and break her maiden in style. Best Bet Race 1 – #10 Just Like Gaby (3) 3yo Filly | T: Ciaron Maher | J: Thomas Stockdale (57kg) Next Best at Moonee Valley: Charming Deel Robbie Griffiths and Jamie Mott will combine with Charming Deel for the third straight start when the four-year-old mare returns to Moonee Valley seeking to bounce back from a second-place finish. The daughter of Dundeel settled worse than midfield and had to loop the field, which in turn gave the eventual winner a perfect cart into the race, and she was overrun late. After drawing barrier three, Mott can settle closer to the speed on the outside of runners, and if Charming Deel shows a similar turn of foot, she will prove hard to beat. Next Best Race 7 – #10 Charming Deel (3) 4yo Mare | T: Robbie Griffiths | J: Jamie Mott (56kg) Best Value at Moonee Valley: Tadgh Tadgh may have only won a Maiden Plate at Yarra Glen on debut, but the Ben, Will & JD Hayes-trained gelding couldn’t have been more impressive when doing so. The son of Brazen Beau didn’t jump the best, but he was able to muster along the inside rail to lead the field up to the home corner before kicking clear to record a dominant 3.25-length winner. With the aid of barrier two and Dakota Keane’s 3kg claim, Tadgh can push forward and replicate his debut performance en route to his second career victory. Best Value Race 2 – #4 Tadgh (2) 3yo Gelding | T: Ben, Will & JD Hayes | J: Dakotah Keane (a3) (59.5kg) Friday quaddie tips for Moonee Valley Moonee Valley quadrella selections Friday, February 5, 2025 1-2-6-7 3-5-6 2-9-10 3-4-5-8 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article

Snazzytavi has been ruled out of Saturday’s Group 1 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) after contracting a virus. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) Illness is likely to sideline Graham Richardson and Rogan Norvall’s top-quality mare Snazzytavi until later in the year. Cambridge Stud’s star performer was being prepared for a crack at Saturday’s Group 1 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa before the five-year-old daughter of Tavistock contracted a virus. “I’d say that her autumn is over, which means we’ll give her a good break and focus on the spring,” Cambridge Stud chief executive Henry Plumptre said. “She had a gallop on Tuesday morning and Warren Kennedy went down to ride her. “He was very happy with her, but within hours it was noticed that her demeanour was different and they took her temperature and she had a very aggressive virus. “We sent her up to Matamata Hospital as a precaution and she’s under treatment for the virus and is responding very well and is stabilised. “She’s in very good hands and, fingers crossed, she’ll be back at our Karaka farm early next week to spell.” By Tavistock, Snazzytavi would have started a short-priced favourite in the Herbie Dyke off the back of her stellar run of form. She romped to victory in the Group 1 Livamol Classic (2040m) in the spring before a break and then successfully resumed in the Group 2 Cal Isuzu Stakes (1600m) and last time out claimed the Group 1 Zabeel Classic (2000m). In her absence, the stud’s black type hopes at Te Rapa will rest with the Lance Noble-trained Luberon, who takes on a stacked line-up in the Group 1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m). “We’ve always had a very big opinion of her, but she is in a very strong race and I think it’s one of the highest rated sprint races in New Zealand for a long time,” Plumptre said. The well-performed daughter of Embellish is a multiple stakes winner and a bold last-start third in the Gr.1 Telegraph after racing wide without cover from an outside stall and will again jump from a potentially awkward gate. “Luberon doesn’t seem capable of drawing inside barrier nine or 10, but she is a very game and genuine mare,” Plumptre said. “She will be competitive, and she’s got her regular jockey (Warren Kennedy) back on because Crocetti isn’t running and it will be exciting to see how she goes.” Horse racing news View the full article

Luke Ferraris coaxes the best out of Mr Ascendency. Photo: HKJC Fresh from Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) success last week, Luke Ferraris continued a barnstorming season with victory on Mr Ascendency at Happy Valley on Wednesday night. Triumphant after My Wish’s brilliant win in the HK$13 million Hong Kong Classic Mile for Mark Newnham, Ferraris combined with Ricky Yiu to land the midweek feature aboard Mr Ascendency with a perfectly-timed ride. Sitting second last on the rails throughout, Ferraris angled Mr Ascendency (122lb) into the clear approaching the 300m before taking a narrow gap between leader and eventual runner-up Telecom Fighters (119lb) and Helene Feeling (133lb), who finished third, to win comfortably. Built on similar lines to My Wish, Mr Ascendency concedes weight and stature to his rivals, but compensates with determination. “He (Mr Ascendency) is a lovely horse, this little fellow. He’s got plenty of heart. He’s another one who lacks size, but makes up for it in heart,” said Ferraris, who celebrated post-race with his father and former Hong Kong-based trainer, David Ferraris. “I had a dream run throughout and the splits came when I needed them to and he hit them really hard. He’s a game little horse. Credit to Ricky and his team, he’s backed up over a short period and he’s never felt better and he’s won a good race.” Reflecting on his Hong Kong Classic Mile success and a Chinese New Year Raceday treble, Ferraris said: “It’s back to business now and it’s good to get one on the board.” Ferraris, 23, is fourth in the 2024/25 jockeys’ championship with 25 wins behind Zac Purton (82), Hugh Bowman (38) and Vincent Ho (27) as the he bears down on his previous best seasonal haul of 35 wins set in 2022/23. Mr Ascendency finished second to stablemate Green N White in the Class 2 Chinese New Year Cup Handicap (1400m) on Friday and validated Yiu’s decision to back him up with a gritty performance. “He ran a good second last Friday and pulled up really well. I couldn’t fault him. I kept monitoring him every morning because it’s only five days between runs,” Yiu said. “Up to this morning, I knew he would perform again. He’s nearly up to his peak. “The English horses have long-lasting racing careers. They’ve got good spirit. Luke Ferraris is riding with a lot of confidence these days. He’s a good jockey.” Purton and Matthew Poon slotted doubles, with the latter notching his 100th Happy Valley winner when Yiu-trained Hayday triumphed. “It’s nice to win on this horse,” Poon said. “I won on this horse twice last season and the owner, Paul (Lau), and Ricky have been very supportive of me. It’s nice to win for them.” David Eustace’s Fortune Whiskey delivered Poon’s 23rd winner of the season with victory, before a masterful Purton ride was pivotal to David Hall’s Northern Beast (134lb) win. Purton completed a brace with a clever front-running ride on David Hayes-trained Soleil Fighter. Douglas Whyte celebrated a double, scoring with Glory B and Red Elegance. Glory B provided Whyte and Lyle Hewitson with their third win of the season in tandem, before Hugh Bowman drove Red Elegance to victory. Jamie Richards made it two wins in as many meetings when Gallant Valour prevailed under Brenton Avdulla. In the closest finish of the meeting, Gallant Valour triumphed by a head with a short head to third place-getter Happy Fat Cat. Confringo scored to give Cody Mo his 23rd victory for the campaign. Ridden for the first time by Harry Bentley, the Trapeze Artist gelding lunged late to win by a short head after seven unplaced previous attempts. Horse racing news View the full article

What Hobart Races Where Elwick Racecourse – 6 Goodwood Rd, Glenorchy TAS 7010 When Friday, February 5, 2025 First Race 2:52pm AEDT Visit Dabble Feature racing in Tasmania heads to Hobart’s Elwick Racecourse where the Group 3 Mystic Journey Stakes (1200m) and Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m) headlines the eight-race meeting. Clear skies are forecast for one of the marquee days of racing in the Apple Isle, and despite the track being rated a Soft 5 at the time of acceptances, competitors should be racing on a Good 4 surface come raceday. The rail will be in its true position throughout, with the opening race set to jump at 2:52pm AEDT. Mystic Journey Stakes Tip: Geegees Mistruth Stuart Gandy’s Geegees Mistruth was impressive without winning during the Melbourne Spring Carnival, and as she returns to Tassie, she shapes as the one to beat in Friday’s feature. At her last start over 1200m, she finished under a length off Bellatrix Star, who would go on to claim Group 2 success and place in Group 1 company. Anthony Darmanin will likely have the Wordsmith filly settled in the second half of the field, but if Geegees Mistruth can find a bum to follow in the home straight, she should be justifying her favouritism with horse racing bookmakers. Mystic Journey Stakes Race 7 – #13 Geegees Mistruth (10) 3yo Filly | T: Stuart Gandy | J: Anthony Darmanin (53.5kg) Tasmanian Derby Tip: Likeakalix The Leanne Gaffney-trained Likeakalix is set to go off as a short-priced favourite with horse racing betting sites, and if he brings anything close to what he has produced this campaign, he should be winning the Tasmanian Derby. The three-year-old gelding won the Listed Launceston Guineas (2100m) by 4.3 lengths when sustaining a long run 600m out from home to suggest the extra 100m will be no issue for the son of Calyx. David Pires will have this bloke stalking the speed, and when asked for an effort, Likeakalix should prove the superior stayer again. Best Value Race 5 – #1 Likeakalix (2) 3yo Gelding | T: Leanne Gaffney | J: David Pires (57kg) Best Bet at Hobart: The Trine The Trine was game in defeat when finishing second over 1100m on his debut at this track, and on his return to the course and distance, he looks set to go one better. The three-year-old gelding led the field up on that day but was grabbed in the shadows of the winning post. Drawn in barrier one, Mehmet Ulucinar will almost certainly take up the running once again, and in a field where there doesn’t look to be too much pressure, The Trine looks hard to catch in the opener. Best Bet Race 1 – #4 The Trine (1) 3yo Gelding | T: Stuart Gandy | J: Mehmet Ulucinar (58kg) Next Best at Hobart: Zewinna Zewinna has been nothing short of impressive in her three starts this time in, and the six-year-old mare can go on with the job having won in impressive style at the Hobart 1600m on January 26. Having stalked a strong speed, when the Tough Speed mare was asked for the ultimate effort, she went on to put 3.8 lengths on her rivals. If apprentice Erica Byrne Burke can land in a forward position from barrier six, Zewinna has the turn of foot to overhaul the leaders and should prove too good for BM68 company. Next Best Race 6 – #4 Zewinna (6) 6yo Mare | T: John Blacker | J: Erica Byrne Burke (a2) (58.5kg) Friday quaddie tips for Hobart Hobart quadrella selections Friday, February 7, 2025 1 1-4-6 7-13 2-4-5-13-14 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article

What Canterbury Races Where Canterbury Park Racecourse – King Street, Canterbury NSW 2193 When Friday, February 7, 2025 First Race 6pm AEDT Visit Dabble Metro racing returns to the bright lights of Canterbury Park Racecourse on Friday night, with a competitive seven-part program set down for decision. The rail returns to the true position the entire circuit for the evening, and with no significant rainfall forecast to hinder proceedings, punters can expect a genuine Good 4 surface throughout the meeting. The opening event is scheduled to get underway at 6pm AEDT. Best Bet at Canterbury: Bright Red The Chris Waller-trained Bright Red is on the one-week backup after being narrowly defeated at this course and distance by stable companion Heed The Omens on January 31. The daughter of Pierro did it tough racing three-wide throughout the journey, still whacking away when the whips were cracking despite the torrid run in transit. James McDonald gets legged aboard from gate one this time around, and provided she doesn’t fall victim to the ‘Canterbury coffin’ from the inside draw, Bright Red should prove hard to hold out in the concluding stages. Best Bet Race 7 – #2 Bright Red (1) 4yo Mare | T: Chris Waller | J: James McDonald (61.5kg) Next Best at Canterbury: Frontex Frontex heads to the races for the first time after two eye-catching barrier trials at Rosehill. His latest piece of work on February 3 particularly caught the attention of pundits, cruising through the wire to suggest the son of Territories had plenty left to offer turning for home. Jay Ford takes the reins and maps to gain an ideal position midfield with cover throughout the journey, and with key contender Koios likely to head around at Scone on Thursday, this Canterbury maiden may prove to be perfect placement by team Hawkes. Ian Wilkes doesn't rush his young horses. You won't seem them running in 4 1/2-furlong races at Keeneland in the spring and they may not peak until late in their 3-year-old year or even early in their 4-year-old year. That's probably why he's had only one starter in the GI Kentucky Derby, McCraken (Ghostzapper), who finished eighth in the 2017 GI Kentucky Derby. But this time it's different. Wilkes has come up with a horse that has forced his way into the Derby picture. That was evident when the Wilkes-trained Burnham Square (Liam's Map) recorded an impressive win in last Saturday's GIII Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream. To talk about Burnham Square and the Road to the Kentucky Derby, Wilkes was this week's Gainesway Guest of the Week on the TDN Writers' Room Podcast, Presented by Keeneland. “Definitely, I'm all about developing horses,” said the native of Muswellbrook, Australia. “I love to develop horses and I learned that from Carl Nafzger. To make money in this game, you've got to build asset value in the horses. And so you just let them come along at their pace. Some come along quicker, some are more precocious, some aren't.” Typical of a Wilkes first-time-starter, the gelding ran well in his debut, finishing second in a $150,000 maiden claimer at Keeneland. But he ran a 58 Beyer, which suggested that maybe the best they could hope for was that he would be a nice allowance horse. He ran an improved second in his next race and then took a quantum leap forward in the following start. Wearing blinkers for the first time, he won by nine lengths and recorded an 86 Beyer. That set him up well for the Holy Bull, which he won despite a less-than-perfect trip. His winning margin was 1 3/4 lengths over the race favorite, Tappan Street (Into Mischief), and he ran a 90 Beyer. Wilkes knows that Burnham Square has yet to run the kind of race that suggests he'll be a top contender in the Derby, but he also knows we haven't seen the best of this horse yet. “It's each race, it's development,” he said. “Did I want to see him run a 102 Beyer on Saturday? No, because then where do I go from there? How do I keep improving if I top him out right there? Each race, I want him to get better. He'll have to because the water is going to get deeper. He has to learn how to run against these horses too. If you look at him, he doesn't win any beauty contests. He's a plain little horse, but he just keeps running. You've got to love him. But you've got to let him do it. I don't want him to run that 100 yet. I want him to run that 100 in the Kentucky Derby. In our “Fastest Horse of the Week,” segment, which is sponsored by WinStar, we went over the many reasons there are to breed to WinStar stallion Nashville. With a 110 Beyer in her win in the GII Santa Monica Stakes, Kopion (Omaha Beach) was the “fastest horse of the week.” Elsewhere on the podcast, which is also sponsored by the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders' Association, West Point Thoroughbreds, XBTV.com, the KTOB and 1/ST Racing, the team of Randy Moss and Bill Finley reviewed the major 3-year-old preps of the weekend, which included a rousing comeback win for Citizen Bull (Into Mischief) in the GII Robert B. Lewis Stakes. Moss admitted he's not yet sold on this horse. Because he is winning his races after getting an uncontested lead, Moss does not so much as have him in his Top 5 in his Derby rankings. While Bob Baffert had a good weekend, the only surprise was that he didn't have a better weekend. He had three of the five starters in the Lewis, three of the four starters in the Santa Monica and two of three starters in Sunday's GIII Las Virgenes S., won by his Tenma (Nyquist). Only Santa Monica winner Kopion stood between Baffert and a stakes sweep. Finley and Moss agreed that Baffert's dominance was a problem that creates too many uncompetitive races that don't appeal to the bettors, but they also agreed that there is nothing anybody can do about it. It was a tough day for the G1 Saudi Cup. Within hours of the breaking news that 2024 3-year-old male champion Sierra Leone (Gun Runner) will not run in the G1 Saudi Cup at King Abdulaziz Racetrack in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Feb. 22, the $20-million race lost another star when the owners of White Abarrio (Race Day) announced that they had also decided to keep their 6-year-old home and focus on a U.S. campaign. “We are going to bypass Saudi,” co-owner Mark Cornett said. “We will stay here and campaign him here. All the stars just weren't lining up with the timing and shipping and all that stuff. We're going to try to do what's best by the horse and stay here and have a nice campaign to end his career here.” Complicating matters is the fact that White Abarrio is co-owned by Saudi Prince Faisal bin Khaled bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud. “All along it was probably 50-50,” said Cornett, whose brother Clint is another co-owner. “We had to factor in that Prince Faisal also owns a piece of the horse and that he is from Saudi Arabia. At the end of the day we decided we had to do what's best for the horse and campaign him over here and have his last few races in the U.S.” Cornett said that White Abarrio will make his next start in the March 29 GIII Ghostzapper Stakes at Gulfstream, which will serve as a prep for the June 7 GI Metropolitan Handicap at Saratoga. Cornett said other races that will be considered will be the GI Whitney, the GI California Crown and the GI Breeders' Cup Classic. While White Abarrio, who is trained by Saffie Joseph, Jr., doesn't show up every time, when he does there may not be a dirt horse on the planet that can beat him. After a lackluster performance when finishing second in GIII Mr. Prospector Stakes, he ran what may have been the best race of his life when winning the Jan. 25 GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream by 6 1/4 lengths in what was expected to be a prep for the Saudi Cup. Trained by Rick Dutrow at the time, White Abarrio was 10th in last year's Saudi Cup. Though White Abarrio is out of the Saudi Cup, the Cornett brothers may still have an entry. They are hoping to get Soul of an Angel (Atreides) into the race, but have been told that at this point she tops the list of the horses on the also-eligible list. The 2024 Champion Filly or Mare Sprinter, she won last year's GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint before finishing third in the Rampart Stakes at Gulfstream. “With White Abarrio dropping out we're still hoping to get Soul of an Angel into the race,” Cornett said. “She's been moved up to the first alternate. That a Breeders' Cup winner is not yet part of the field for the race, well, you can kind of read between the lines there. They have horses weighted way below her but ahead of us so far as getting into the race goes. So I don't really understand their system.” The post White Abarrio Will Also Pass Saudi Cup appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. SHISOSPICY (f, 3, Mitole–Mischief Galore, by Into Mischief) earned a 'TDN Rising Star' tag when romping by 16 1/4 lengths in her Gulfstream debut last October. She then picked up black-type while sprinting on the dirt while the beaten favorite in both the Fern Creek Stakes and the Mockingbird Stakes at Oaklawn to kick off her 3-year-old season Jan. 4. Trying the turf for the first time while also cutting back to her shortest distance and picking up Lasix here, the 4-5 favorite showed no change in tactic, dashing right to the front to lead narrowly ahead of Blossoming Erudite (Solomini) into the turn. Only extending her margin past the quarter pole, Shisospicy came home a decisive winner by 2 3/4 lengths ahead of Le Amazonia (Practical Joke). Mischief Galore, who RNA'd for $40,000 in foal to Yaupon at KEEJAN in 2024, has now produced back to back foals by the Spendthrift sprinter with her 2023 colt bringing $175,000 at FTKOCT last year. Through the first six weeks of the Classic Meet, Santa Anita Park posted gains over a strong first weekend in February. Through last weekend, the Classic Meet maintained increases in both on-track attendance and total all-sources handle for the season, which opened on Dec. 26. Wagering is up more than 7% as total all-sources handle exceeded $185 million. The business increases are despite the track being closed for a week due to the impact of the Eaton Fire on the local community. Additionally, the weekend of Jan. 10-12 racing was postponed as Santa Anita hosted a pop-up relief effort/donation site in the south parking lot. Southern California Edison continues to use the north parking lot at Santa Anita as their command center, while Cal Fire (California Dept. of Forestry & Fire Protection) is using a large part of the south parking lot as their base camp though mid-February. Field size average is also up nearly a full horse over the corresponding time last year. Racing resumes Friday, Feb. 7, for a three-day week, with first post time for the nine-race card at 12:30 p.m. PT. In addition to the $100,000 San Marcos Stakes, Saturday also features the Santa Anita Chili Cookoff, with all proceeds benefiting the Foothill Unity Center, which has been providing immediate relief to the victims of the Eaton Fire.
