  2. Horses evacuated Tuesday from the wildfire-threatened San Luis Rey Downs training center in Bonsall, San Diego County, and shipped elsewhere, largely to Del Mar racetrack, could return to the training center as soon as Wednesday afternoon, should conditions remain favorable. The nearby Lilac Fire has burned through 85 acres and is 90% contained, according to Cal Fire. “All evacuation orders and warnings were lifted in the area last night and fire containment improved to 90% as of this morning. Air quality is good so barring any change in conditions our plan is to allow horses to return later today,” wrote Nate Newby, Santa Anita's general manager, in a text Wednesday morning. The firefighters did an amazing job,” Newby added. In case the horses remained at Del Mar for any prolonged period, track operators had started Tuesday the process of opening up the training and main tracks for exercise. “No sooner that they arrive, they head back. But it was a good exercise,” said Tom Robbins, Del Mar's executive vice president of racing and industry relations. He added that ultimately, the safety of the horses, people and facilities is what matters. “It was the best possible outcome.” In December of 2017, a wildfire ripped through the San Luis Rey training center. 46 horses died and multiple barns were severely damaged. The latest threat to the training facility follows on the heels of some of the worst fires to have devastated Los Angeles. They include the Palisades Fire, on the west side of the city, and the Eaton Fire focused on the northeastern suburb of Altadena, a community in the San Gabriel Mountain foothills where many of Santa Anita's racetrack community live. Together, they have burned through some 38,000 acres. Those who have lost their homes in the fires include several from the Santa Anita racetrack community. 4. Hallandale, FL–The initial idea behind the GI Pegasus World Cup was rooted in the notion that horses running in Gulfstream Park's marquee race for older horses attract the nation's top competitors to run for a lot of money before launching a championship racing season or heading off to the breeding shed. Of course, there was more nuance behind the earliest concept of the race, not to mention that others Pegasus Day events have been added since the initial renewal was run in 2017. However, the basic framework seemed to lend itself to offering the leading stallion prospects a place to propel them into something greater. With only eight runnings in the rearview mirror, the Pegasus appears to have accomplished just that. Case in point: Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Walmac Farm's Locked (Gun Runner), who perfectly encapsulates the early vision of the race was established the 5-2 morning line choice for the nine-furlong contest. One of two Pegasus runners trained by Todd Pletcher, who previously won the race with Life Is Good in 2022, the chestnut is by Gun Runner, who famously took the second installment of the race in 2018 before earning the 2017 Horse of the Year title. “That's what we're always hoping for [developing stallion prospects],” said trainer Todd Pletcher when asked about the race's relevance when structuring the careers of future stallions. “It's Gulfstream's premier race for older horses. Historically, it replaced the Donn which was a significant race. We won [the Donn] with Constitution, who has gone on to be a really good stallion [at Win Star]. Harlan's Holiday also won it and went on to have a remarkable stallion career [initially standing at Airdrie before moving to Win Star].” While Locke's flashy sire was promptly retired to Three Chimneys Farm following his Pegasus victory, the 4-year-old appears to just be getting started after missing much of 2024 following a (left) knee injury last spring. “He went to Stonestreet Ocala and convalesced there,” confirmed Pletcher. “He had an unusual ligament injury in his knee that knocked us off the Classic trail, so we had to give him time off. We are fortunate that he came back well during the fall. It was frustrating not to have him ready for the spring Classics because he always presented himself as that type of horse.” A first out third behind subsequent stakes winner Just Steel (Justify) at Saratoga in 2023, he rebounded to score by a resounding 7 1/4-lengths while earning 'TDN Rising Star' status during the Spa's closing week action. Back on top, albeit narrowly, in Keeneland's GI Breeders' Futurity, the chestnut concluded his juvenile season with a third behind barn mate Fierceness (City of Light) in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita. Given plenty of time to recover after a Triple Crown campaign was dashed, the $425,000 Keeneland September purchase has proven unbeatable since, winning an optional claiming allowance by 7 1/2 lengths at Aqueduct last October before closing out the year with a 1 1/2-length score in the GII Cigar Mile at that venue Dec. 7. “In the Cigar Mile, he was stepping up against older horses for the first time and I thought he handled that assignment really well. I thought it was a big performance,” he said. He continued, “He also ran really well in the seven-furlong allowance and actually showed more tactical speed than he had shown in his 2-year-old races. I think that was important because I think that compromised his chances in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile when he got shuffled back a bit. He was closing well, but I think [Pletcher-trained] Fierceness [subsequently named Ch. 2yo of 2023] and Muth got away from him at the top of the stretch. He just missed second even though he was closing really well.” While Locked is likely to be mixing things up on the front end, stablemate Crupi (Curlin) will have to work out a trip from off the pace. Third behind National Treasure (Quality Road) in last season's Pegasus, the chestnut failed to fire when 10th in the G1 Dubai World Cup before annexing the 10-furlong GII Suburban at Saratoga. Finishing runner-up in both the GII Brooklyn and GI Whitney, the Repole Stable and St. Elias Stables runner was a distant third behind another stablemate, Tapit Trice (Tapit), in the GII Woodward. In his most recent trip to post, he was a troubled fifth under the wire in the Nov. 29 GII Clark at Churchill but was promoted to fourth for interference. “It's all about trip with Crupi,” he said. “Crupi ran in Dubai last year and, unfortunately, caught a speed-favoring track which wasn't to his liking. He's a horse that comes from off the pace and he's shown that he needs a good solid pace up front. He also doesn't love a lot of kickback so that might be a little tricky with him. It's really just about working out the right trip with him.” As for Pletcher's expectations for the 5-year-old in this year's Pegasus, he added, “He ran well in this race last year, and he was a solid third. If he can improve a little bit on that and he can get the pace up front, we can see him getting a piece of it.” Armed with a pair of entrants of contrasting styles, Pletcher explained that 'the luck of the draw' or the lack-there-of, threw the team a bit of a curveball in Saturday's race. However, he feels the morning-line favorite's recent form gives the colt the ammunition to overcome the disadvantage. “It's unfortunate that Locked drew post 11, that can be a disadvantage going 1 1/8-miles at Gulfstream, so it is critical that he get away cleanly and get into the first turn with some position without, hopefully, losing too much ground,” Pletcher explained. “We were encouraged with the effort that he showed going seven furlongs that he has enough tactical speed to overcome the post.” Champion Building Race In addition to Locked's sire Gun Runner, who also earned the Eclipse for the leading older dirt male of 2017, several others have used the Pegasus to either cement or propel them to a championship season. Arrogate, the winner of the inaugural event, earned the champion 3-year-old colt title of 2016 as well as being named the highweighted older horse at 4 in the UAE free handicap at 9 1/2 – 11 furlongs after taking that season's Dubai World Cup. Gun Runner winning the 2018 Pegasus | Susie Raisher Knicks Go kicked off his championship season with a victory in the 2021 Pegasus before capping off the year with a score in GI Breeders' Cup Classic. Named champion older male and Horse of the Year for 2021, the grey was retired after finishing runner-up to Life Is Good in the 2022 Pegasus. While not earning a title in the U.S. after a season that Life Is Good won a trio of Grade Is, including the Pegasus, the son of Into Mischief was named the highweighted older horse at four in the UAE after a fourth-place finish in that season's Dubai World Cup. As recent as 2024, the most recent Pegasus victor, National Treasure, has been named a finalist for the Eclipse Award as last season's leading older male in the nation. When asked if it's the seasonal placement or large payday that keeps the Pegasus as a primary early-season objective for many, Pletcher opined, “I think it's a combination of both. But the thing that is interesting the [G1] Saudi Cup [Feb. 22] has come along the last couple of years and the timing of the Pegasus is a little bit close to the Saudi race. I wish they could separate them, timing wise, the Pegasus, Saudi Cup and Dubai [World Cup] a bit more space. It's difficult to make all three. Each one is so lucrative that you'd love to be in a position that you could run in all three. But as Gulfstream's most important older horse race, the Pegasus definitely stands on its own.” The post Locked Aims to Follow In Gun Runner’s Hoofsteps With Pegasus Win appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 7. Horses seem to always be at the center of Brent and Sharilyn Gasaway's life. As the story goes, the day Brent proposed he ran late because, of course, he was at the racetrack. Even though she was none too pleased, Sharilyn confirmed the end result was an affirmative one. By now you have probably heard how their ownership group 4 G Racing–which includes the couple and their twin son and daughter, Brent's cousin Lance Gasaway, and Daniel Hamby III–paired with Valley View Farm to reach one of the apogees in the sport of horse racing when longshot Mystik Dan (Goldencents) won the GI Kentucky Derby last year. According to Sharilyn, it's the horses and the partnerships associated with them that keep her and Brent coming back. “I had never met Banks [Mystik Dan partner Daniel Hamby] until we won the [GIII] Southwest [Stakes] at Oaklawn,” she said. “We're getting ready to take the picture and all of a sudden here he comes. He had been in a hotel room watching the race and he was busting down there to get in the photo. It was just a great moment.” With a small broodmare band and with Mystik Dan accepting an invite to the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream, Sharilyn sat down and talked to the TDN about continuing dreams, the realities of breeding to race and which horse she wishes they had not passed on. MA'AM, 12, Colonel John–Lady Siphonica, by Siphon (Brz). To be bred to Into Mischief. This business, as everyone knows, is full of ups and downs. We got Mystik Dan out of our mare Ma'am who's been the best and 4 G owns a third of her while Lance and Banks also own the same piece. When she did not meet her reserve at Fasig-Tipton November we were happy to keep her. Sadly though, back around Thanksgiving, she lost her Into Mischief foal. We've never had any trouble with her. I don't know what caused that to happen and it was just horrific. Ma'am hadn't had a year off. After all kinds of tests that we had run, they didn't find one thing. Everything happens for a reason, so we've got her back on the books with Into Mischief. MI FIORI, 13, Congrats–Shoo In, by Dynaformer. To be bred to Flameaway. 4 G's Mi Fiori, who I just fell in love with and used to hang out in my backyard, already has a turfy pair in SW Crown Imperial (Classic Empire) and SP Reining Flowers (Midnight Storm). We went with Flameaway this time around and she lost the baby. We were very late in the process, so we sent her to Rood & Riddle and they did a full scope. She had a little pocket that wasn't getting cleaned and that was the issue. The procedure went well and we have her back on the register to return to Flameaway. Randy Gullatt at Twin Creeks helps me pick stallions and if we go to the sales. We're only going to spend so much money on horses because we are breeding to race. That's what we do. So I'm not trying to breed them into something to sell. Flameaway has a strong track record already and Randy advised us that returning to him was the thing to do. Brent and Sharilyn Gasaway with trainer John Ortiz | Sarah Andrew SOUTHERN GRAYCE, 7, Liam's Map–She Be Keene, by Posse. To be bred to Cyberknife. Her name is Southern Grayce, G-R-A-Y-C-E, because I like to change names up. 4 G owns her down the middle with Lance. So she's great. Last year her Take Charge Indy colt was her first foal in late April. We tried to get her to Cyberknife and we were pushing it at the end. We're going to send her back to him. Our partner Lance picked that stallion. He loves to do research and nicking. Lance and his dad [Clint], who recently passed away, would go to a sale, and then he would call and ask, 'Do you want to go in?' You never know when he is going to call, so you have to be ready. It's funny, Lance did that same thing with Wells Bayou (Lookin At Lucky), but he called my husband instead of me and my husband passed. With my background in finance, I think I must have been complaining about expenses. So, Wells Bayou wins his debut at Keeneland under Brad Cox and the colt is accidently wearing our silks instead of Lance's. Of course, he goes on to win the GII Louisiana Derby. I'm like, can we be in on him now? But we missed the boat! MATERIAL WITNESS, Constitution–More Than Beauty, by More Than Ready. To be bred to Goldencents. Material Witness is a mare that 4 G owns outright once we bought out Twin Creeks when she retired from racing. She is a Constitution filly. And so we are going to send her to Goldencents, who has been good to us with Mystik Dan. Finances were a reason there, but he's not super expensive. Sometimes when you have good luck in this business you go back and try it again. Randy said that he really thought it would be a good match and we agreed. So he helped get that together with our friends at Spendthrift. Interested in sharing your own mating plans? Email garyking@thetdn.com. 8. Godolphin's Ruling Court (Justify), third in the G3 Acomb Stakes to The Lion In Winter (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), will point to the Jumeirah 2000 Guineas on Super Saturday in March, according to trainer Charlie Appleby. A five-length maiden winner at first asking at Sandown in July, the bay colt was a €2.3-million Arqana May Breeze-Up graduate. Ruling Court has been training toward his 3-year-old bow in Dubai. “He's done very well,” said Appleby of his high-profile charge. “He was a breeze-up horse so we gave him a bit of time before he ran in his Sandown maiden and he did what he did. “It was always our target to look towards the Acomb, and full credit to the race planning team with the conditions of the race changing – that race will only get better year on year. “What we saw with Aidan's horse winning [The Lion In Winter], James Owen's horse in second [Wimbledon Hawkeye (GB) (Kameko)] who went on and progressed throughout the season. We felt that was the strongest juvenile race of the season until the Dewhurst.” Added the trainer of his 'TDN Rising Star', “He's done well out in Dubai. We felt that the training conditions out there would suit him and he's on target to run in the (Jumeirah) 2000 Guineas on Super Saturday [Mar. 5]. We could potentially look at the 2000 Guineas nearer the time. I think he will stretch out beyond a mile, so it's whether we look at him as a Guineas horse or a [G2] Dante horse after his run at Meydan.” Appleby, who is known for his potency with his North American raiders, also had an update regarding the rest of his 2025 team. “We campaigned our horses as we did last year, and I was quite open about it, to give ourselves the best chance to win graded races,” he said. “With the 3-year-olds that we've got they will most definitely be campaigned in Europe, for sure. “We were left with a hole a couple of years ago in our older horses, but this year hopefully the likes of Notable Speech (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who might start in something like the [G1] Lockinge [Stakes] and work towards the Queen Anne, and Arabian Crown (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}), who will be looking at mile-and-a-half races, will fill the gap. “You've got to have a good one to go and win them, you can't just turn up. I just felt we didn't have that, but hopefully this year we will have.” The post Ruling Court Pointing To Jumeirah 2000 Guineas In March appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 13. Nine British Flat stallions will parade at Tattersalls on Thursday, January 30 ahead of the February Sale. As reported in TDN last week, A'Ali (Ire), Bangkok (Ire), Bradsell (GB), Caturra (Ire), El Caballo (GB), Isaac Shelby (GB), Lope Y Fernandez (Ire), Stradivarius (Ire) and Ubettabelieveit (Ire) will be available for viewing at Park Paddocks. They will be joined by nine former stars of the track for the inaugural RoR Showcase, which includes Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Native River (Ire). “The Retraining of Racehorses charity is a vitally important asset to the British racing and bloodstock industries and we hope that the new RoR Showcase at Tattersalls will celebrate both the talents and successes of former racehorses in their second careers, in addition to increasing awareness of the crucial role played by RoR in ensuring their welfare,” said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony. “The Stallion Parade of young British-based sires has been a staple attraction at the Tattersalls February Sale for many years and the day will provide an opportunity to showcase many important aspects of the bloodstock industry to breeders and racing and equestrian enthusiasts alike.” The event is also being backed by the British European Breeders' Fund, which will sponsor refreshments throughout the morning. British EBF Chairman Simon Sweeting, who is supporting the parade with his Overbury Stud-based Caturra, said, “The British EBF's £2 million annual contribution to racing's prize-money is funded, in the main, by British stallions. When Tattersalls approached us about their plans for the parade, it made perfect sense for us to support and be associated with it. It is a great opportunity for breeders to see new horses such as The National Stud's Bradsell and stallions from a bit further afield such as Ubettabelieveit, El Caballo and Bangkok.” The post Flat Stallions on Parade at Tattersalls appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 14. Zac Purton has broken Douglas Whyte's Hong Kong all-time win record of 1,813 after scoring at Happy Valley on Wednesday evening. Purton was aboard Spirit Of Peace (Aus) (Harry Angel {Ire}) in the Class 4 Kowloon Park Handicap over 1200 metres, the third race on the card, when he tied Whyte's record. In Wednesday's finale, the Class 3 Victoria Park Handicap, the Australian booted View Of The World (NZ) (Derryn {Aus}) home to bring his all-win record on the island to 1,814 and take the record outright. A multiple champion jockey in Hong Kong, Whyte retired in 2019. Purton, who moved to Hong Kong in 2007, needed just 73 victories to equal Whyte's tally at the start of the 2024/2025 Hong Kong season. 16. Fashion Faux Pas (Flatter), in foal to former champion sire Snitzel (Aus), brought A$1.15 million from Coolmore's Justin Carey to top the Inglis Digital January (Late) Online Sale on Wednesday. Consigned by Newgate on behalf of the James Harron Bloodstock broodmare partnership, the 9-year-old mare is a half-sister to GIII Arlington Oaks third Ire (Political Force), as well as two more stakes-placed half-siblings. One, Flashy Campaign (Political Force), is the dam of two stakes winners that have both placed at graded level. Her third dam is the blue hen Wild Applause (Northern Dancer). Coolmore had also extended to A$1.7 million for Fashion Faux Pas's Snitzel yearling colt earlier this month. “Firstly I want to congratulate James Harron and his partners in Phil Merten, Belinda Bateman, the Doyle family and Love Racing on breeding such a stunning colt that we were so excited to buy a fortnight ago,” Carey said. “We're delighted to have bought this mare off them, a group we've had a great relationship with via the likes of King's Legacy and the very exciting 3YO Espionage. “We look forward with great excitement to the future with Fashion Faux Pas. We have a high opinion of these fast American mares that seem to have good chemistry with Snitzel and it's worked with the likes of [G1-winning Inglis Easter graduate] Switzerland (Aus) so hopefully we can enjoy similar success in the future with this mare. “If we are lucky enough to have the opportunity to stand City Of Troy, who was crowned Cartier Horse Of The Year last night, at Coolmore Australia next year, I'm sure she would be a fabulous mating for him also.” “Our broodmare partnership is a relatively young venture, with our focus always firmly on quality,” Harron said. “We have expanded into the American market, having identified a promising trend in the on-track success of progeny from these mares. Fashion Faux Pas exemplified the vision and standards we strive for. Her Snitzel colt, which sold earlier this year for A$1.7m to Coolmore, was undoubtedly one of the standout colts of the year and her Extreme Choice (Aus) filly foal is also excellent. “Our strategy will be to continue to turn over these mares, and we are hopeful that Fashion Faux Pas will become a blue hen for Coolmore. They are achieving great success, and their hard work and dedication make it well deserved. Inglis Digital's Nick Melmeth was understandably delighted with the result. “We are incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to promote stock of this quality to the market, so a big thank you to James Harron and his partners,” Melmeth said. “A huge amount of work has gone into getting to a point where results like this can be achieved. “I am very proud of the work of the whole Inglis team who contribute to the success of the platform, and in the case of this particular mare, we wish Tom [Magnier] and the whole Coolmore team every success with her.” The sale grossed A$5.46 million. The decision, made by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters, will honor the memory of the longtime author, racing journalist, and script writer for the Eclipse Awards since the event's inception in 1971. “For more than half a century, Ed Bowen's words described the most memorable moments of the sport as captured each year during the Eclipse Awards,” said the NTRA's President and CEO Tom Rooney. “His list of accomplishments includes an Eclipse Award for magazine writing in 1972, thousands of articles and nearly two dozen books on Thoroughbred breeding and racing. 19. Kyle Clifford, 26, has pleaded guilty to the murders of Carole, Louise and Hannah Hunt, the wife and daughters of BBC and Sky Sports Racing commentatorJohn Hunt. Appearing via video link at Cambridge Crown Court on Wednesday, Clifford admitted three counts of murder, one of false imprisonment against his former girlfriend Louise Hunt, 25, and two counts of possession of offensive weapons – a crossbow and a knife. He pleaded not guilty to a charge of raping Louise Hunt. The fatal attacks took place at the Hunt family's home in Bushey, Hertfordshire last July. A major manhunt was launched in the wake of the murders, with Clifford eventually being apprehended with serious injuries in Lavender Hill Cemetery in Enfield, north London, having shot himself in the chest with a crossbow. Last summer, John Hunt, a widely popular member of the racing community in Britain, released a statement with his surviving daughter Amy, which said, “The devastation we are experiencing cannot be put into words.” The post Guilty Plea for Murders of John Hunt’s Family appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. The Jockey Club will invest more than $6 million to support initiatives such as equine safety and aftercare, industry growth, promotion of the sport, education, and national and international collaboration as part of its Industry Impact Report released Wednesday. “We are proud of the many initiatives we support and that The Jockey Club's mission has not wavered in more than 130 years,” said The Jockey Club's President and COO James L. 22. Uncertainty surrounds the future ownership of Steve Parkin's Dullingham Park, with several owner-breeder operations having been linked to its potential purchase in recent weeks. Kia Joorabchian's Amo Racing is the latest name to be tied to the 110-acre stallion stud just outside Newmarket, which is currently home to Shaquille (GB) and Soldier's Call (GB). Contacted by the TDN, Joorabchian said that he was “aware of the opportunity of Dullingham Park”. Joorabchian and his associates, which include Nottingham Forest FC owner Evangelos Marinakis, made a splash at last year's bloodstock sales, primarily in Britain, where they spent approximately £36 million on yearlings, foals and broodmares. Around $11.7 million was spent in Kentucky at Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton, while Amo Racing also bought Angelo Buonarroti (Justify) for €1 million at last year's Arqana Breeze-up Sale. Furthermore, Joorabchian is close to completing his multi-million-pound purchase of Sir Michael Stoute's historic Freemason Lodge stable on Newmarket's prestigious Bury Road. He has plans to instal Brazilian-born trainer Raphael Freire, who is currently based in Lambourn and has also previously trained in Norway. “It's not a secret that we are looking at all the stud farms – we have been looking actually for about seven months,” he said. “We haven't decided where we are going to start our operation and it's a little bit immature because, obviously buying a stud farm now when we have put our stallions in Tally-Ho [Stud] and other places, we can't move them. So we'll probably aim to do something towards mid-year, but we do know that Dullingham is an opportunity at the minute. “If a stud farm comes up, everyone knows that we are going to be interested, but we don't know whether that's going to be in Britain or Ireland. I've seen a few farms in Ireland and I've got to go to see Dullingham.” Parkin, who operates under the racing name of his former business Clipper Logistics, bought Dullingham Park from retired trainer Mark Tompkins in 2023. The purchase of Shaquille, in whom original owner Martin Hughes has retained a significant share, swiftly followed and the champion sprinter retired ahead of the start of the 2024 breeding season, with Soldier's Call joining him from his previous base at Ballyhane Stud. With the start of the breeding season now only three weeks away, the management at Dullingham Park has been approached by TDN regarding plans for the stallions but is unable to comment at this time. Eddie O'Leary, who is one of around 20 breeders to have bought a breeding right in Shaquille, said, “There has been no contact whatsoever. We are planning to send mares over to England for him but I don't know if he is going to be at Dullingham or not.” In a TDN interview in September 2023 Parkin spoke of his ambitions for Dullingham Park. He has however subsequently sold off a notable number of horses in training, including his homebred Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Fallen Angel (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}), who is now owned by Wathnan Racing. The Qatari operation also now owns the broodmares Dramatised (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) and Romantic Proposal (Ire) (Raven's Pass), both of whom won Group races for Clipper Logistics. Parkin's Irish-based Rathbride Farm was offered at auction last October with a guide price of €4.7 million but was unsold. His main base is the 300-acre Branton Court Stud in Yorkshire. Parkin is currently engaged in a legal case with his former bloodstock advisor Joe Foley of Ballyhane Stud over the disputed ownership of the Ballyhane-based stallion Sands Of Mali (Fr). The case will resume in the Irish High Court on Thursday (January 23). Amo Racing has a burgeoning stallion roster of its own, currently spread across three farms in Ireland. King Of Steel and Bucanero Fuerte (GB) have recently been retired to the O'Callaghan family's Tally-Ho Stud in Ireland, which is also the base of Persian Force (Ire). Another of Amo's star performers on the track, Go Bears Go (Ire), has been retired to Oak Lodge Stud and Derby runner-up Mojo Star (Ire) is at Whytemount Stud. 24. Former apprentice jockey Gemma Tutty turned her attentions to training when she took over the reins at Trenholme House Farm from her mother, Karen, in 2022. Based in North Yorkshire, Tutty enjoyed notable success with her select team in 2024 and is hoping to pick up where she left off when the Flat season on turf gets underway in less than 10 weeks. The yard sent out 27 winners and won just shy of £400,000 in prize-money in 2024. How do you reflect on last year as a whole? On reflection, it surpassed all expectations by a long way and, hopefully, helped to demonstrate our versatility as a team by ticking some more boxes off. I was concerned after the success of Mostly Cloudy (Ire) (Harzand {Ire}) in my first season that I may be pigeonholed as an expert in 'slow horses' due to him being a two-miler, so to have a progressive sprinter now rated 104 and several juvenile debutant winners in 2024 was really pleasing and a real credit to the team. I daresay we've got our work cut out for this year now, but that's a challenge we're happy to have. What was your highlight of 2024 on the racecourse? We've been very lucky that there are several big days to choose from, but I think I would have to go with Blue Storm (GB) (Blue Point {Ire}) winning at Epsom on Derby Day in the 3YO “Dash”. It was my first visit to the track and the whole day was a huge buzz, particularly as the biggest trainers in the game were all present ahead of the big race. How many horses would you currently have in training and do you have ambitions to grow the yard further in the years to come? We started with 18 boxes licensed and have grown that number to 26 boxes currently. I have just submitted planning for 10 more, which we're really hopeful gets permitted. I do have further ideas for expansion in mind if we continue to grow, but I prefer to do so at a pace that feels comfortable to us all. I'm really proud of what we've built as a team and I'm mindful that I don't want to drastically change that. Who has been the biggest influence on your career? I am very lucky that I have had the opportunity to ride out in dozens of yards over the years and travel internationally through racing, seeing many operations across different codes and countries. I've ridden out for Saeed bin Suroor in Dubai, Guillaume Macaire in France, Paul Nicholls, Jonjo O'Neill, Kevin Ryan, Alan Swinbank, David Barron, Mick Easterby, Ruth Carr, et al. I like to think I have taken a bit of everyone's methods forwards, finding what works best for us as a team. I'm not sure I could account the influence to one individual. You also rode 74 winners in Britain as a jockey. What led to the decision to stop race-riding and to start a training career when you took over the licence from your mother, Karen, in 2022? I had already done my training modules whilst I was still riding, so it was a gradual decision that I had been thinking about for a few years. I knew race-riding was never going to be forever for me and it was more of a hobby than a career choice. I was very fortunate that I was in a position to enjoy it for what it was, due to having a degree to fall back on if needs be. I'd taken over a lot of aspects of the training whilst the licence was still in Mum's name, so it didn't feel like a massive change on the practical front, but not race-riding was an adjustment at first. However, I've been far too busy to miss it since! What was your best day in the saddle? Thankfully, I appear to be a much better trainer than I was a jockey, but I did enjoy it, albeit at the lower levels. I think winning on my old stalwart Talent Scout (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) for the 10th time in his 11-year-old season would have to be up there. Winning on horses you absolutely adore is an amazing feeling. And your best day since you started training? There have been a good few highlights, particularly last season, but I think I'll have to go with Mostly Cloudy's fifth consecutive win, which came in the Brown Jack at Ascot on my first visit to the track. It was a pretty special day in my first season training–I was on cloud nine. Give us a dark horse to follow for the year ahead? I'm a big fan of the lightly-raced Thelma's Angel (Ire), a four-year-old filly by Dark Angel (Ire). She's only had two starts, finishing third on debut in a warm heat at Newcastle, followed by a decisive win at Ayr. I think she could be a special one. Who is the best value stallion with the start of the breeding season just around the corner? I would have a few in mind. Rajasinghe (Ire) I believe to be fantastic value at £3,000. He hasn't had many runners, but the statistics for those who have run are quite remarkable–47% of his runners were winners last year, including my own Singoura (GB). I'm also a big fan of Golden Horn (GB) at £10,000. He is consistently producing good-quality stock, year after year. I'll also be following the Ghaiyyath (Ire) three-year-olds closely this year. What would make 2025 a good year for you? I'd really like to get a domestic Group winner on the board. It's obviously not an easy feat, but I do believe I've got several horses for this year who could well be good enough. Aside from that, to keep operating at a healthy strike rate and for our owners to enjoy their season with us.
