  1. This time last year New Zealand syndicator Go Racing celebrated one of their biggest moments when Velocious carried their silks to victory in the TAB Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m), and this year, they will be out to add the 3YO crown to their mantle. Velocious, a $190,000 Karaka purchase, was backed into an even money favourite for the rich juvenile feature following victory in the Listed Counties Challenge Stakes (1100m) and placing in the Gr.2 Eclipse Stakes (1200m), and Go Racing general manager Matt Allnutt said he was a relieved man when the world’s leading jockey, James McDonald, guided their charge to a comfortable 2-1/4 length victory. “This time last year I was as nervous as I have ever been going into a race meeting with a favourite,” Allnutt said. “It was a great night last year, it was such a relief and such a thrill to get the win.” Velocious went on to win the Gr.1 Sistema Stakes (1200m) at her next start to cap an outstanding juvenile term. With plenty of lucrative three-year-old targets in front of her this season, Velocious failed to fire in her first two starts and subsequently underwent a wind operation and is making a pleasing return to the racetrack for trainer Stephen Marsh. “She had a jumpout last week and will have a quiet trial next week,” Allnutt said. “She will have two trials and then will be back and ready to race all going well. “Her breathing was really good in the jumpout last week and she certainly hasn’t lost any of her speed. We were more than happy with what she did and are really looking forward to the future with her.” While Velocious won’t get the opportunity to make it back-to-back Karaka Millions triumphs, Go Racing will still have a contender to barrack for in the $1.5 million TAB Karaka Millions 3YO (1600m) in Fun Never Sets (NZ) (Proisir). Purchased out of HGT Bloodstock’s 2023 New Zealand Book 1 Yearling Sale draft for $50,000, the daughter of Proisir has won one of her eight starts for trainer Kylie Hoskin and will jump from the ace barrier on Saturday with premiership-winning jockey Warren Kennedy aboard. While excited to be represented on Karaka Millions night once more, Allnutt said Go Racing are heading into Saturday in a more relaxed state than last year, feeling none of the pressure with their $21 outsider. “We haven’t got anywhere near the expectations this time, we are a lot more relaxed and looking forward to the night,” he said. “She is a filly that doesn’t over-race and she does things pretty right. We have got a good, experienced rider on in Warren Kennedy, and have the shortest way home. Barrier 1 seemed the logical one when they came up and we are rapt to get it. “Last start she was only 0.2 of a length behind Yaldi, who is third favourite for the race, and if she runs up to what she did last start she can be right there I think. “The owners are getting a good ride out of her. She has picked up a maiden win and she has shown us quite a bit. I know Kylie has a good opinion of her and she is a genuine, honest filly and will give the owners something to cheer on Saturday anyway.” Go Racing will also be represented earlier on the card by Imperial Empress in the $1 million Elsdon Park Aotearoa Classic (1600m). “She is a really good mare, but she has just been doing things wrong the last couple of starts,” Allnutt said. “She just doesn’t like getting amongst horses. Wiremu Pinn (jockey) has got a really big opinion of her, he loves the horse and is sticking with her. “She is well drawn (2), the blinkers go on for this Saturday, and this will be the first time she races in blinkers, and hopefully they work. It is a big ask with her also, it is a pretty hot field, but we are confident she will acquit herself well.” In the lead-up to Saturday, the Go Racing team will be busy inspecting yearlings at Karaka in search of their next champion. “We will be out here all week,” Allnutt said. “We have teamed up with Stuart Boman from Blandford Bloodstock in the UK. He is a world-renowned bloodstock agent. “We are getting around them all in a couple of teams and we will meet later today and come up with short lists. “We probably see horses two or three times and the ones we like we get them vetted. Then we follow them in (to the sale ring) and hopefully we have enough money to buy them.” Allnutt said they will be on the lookout for up to a dozen yearlings at the sales, which they have found is a good number to complement their other purchases throughout the year. “We have changed the way we do things,” he said. “In past years we have bought the majority of our horses from Karaka in January, and it puts you under a lot of pressure. We spread that out throughout the year now and are buying a lot more horses from the UK, including tried horses.” View the full article
  2. It was luck by name and luck by nature for Ben and Ryan Foote at the barrier draw for Saturday’s $1 million TAB Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m) at Ellerslie. The father-and-son training partnership will prepare Vega For Luck (NZ) (Lucky Vega) for the lucrative juvenile contest, the son of Lucky Vega drawing gate three, outside of Toretto (NZ) (Ardossan) and race-favourite To Bravery Born (NZ) (Snitzel). Vega For Luck was a winner on debut in early October, with three subsequent runs including a third in the Listed Counties Challenge Stakes (1100m) and fifth in the Gr.2 Eclipse Stakes (1200m) on New Year’s Day. “It makes you feel like you’ve got a lot more of a chance, when his name was called out early I was pretty happy,” Ben Foote said. “He’s a really good doing two-year-old, he’s had a lot of runs and gallops around Ellerslie, so we think we’re in with a chance. He’s probably not the best horse in the race, but if he puts himself in it from a good barrier, he can be in it for sure. “You’d have to (push forward), it would just be too hard for him to get too far back.” The Foote’s stable star Babylon Berlin has also received a royal opportunity in the Gr.1 Sistema Railway (1200m) later in the evening, the mare set to jump from barrier two. Babylon Berlin has contested the Railway on three occasions, finishing third behind Entriviere and second to phenomenal sprinter Imperatriz, before an uncharacteristic seventh in last year’s running, held at Pukekohe. At her fourth attempt, Babylon Berlin is currently rated an $8 equal-third favourite after a winning performance in the Gr.3 Concorde Stakes (1200m) and ahead of Saturday’s $700,000 feature, Foote couldn’t be happier with his charge. “She’s flying, everything seems tip-top and drawing barrier two is really good, it’s nice to be going to Karaka Millions Night with two good barriers and two good chances,” he said. “She’ll definitely push forward, she loves the fight and loves being taken on, so good luck to anything that wants to take her on.” View the full article
  3. Lindsay Park will take aim at the first leg of a lucrative New Zealand double when Hello Romeo (NZ) (Hello Yourmzain) steps out at Ellerslie on Saturday. A long-term plan of brothers Ben, Will and JD Hayes will be put to the test with the promising colt making the return trip across the Tasman for a crack at the $1 million TAB Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m). The son of Hello Youmzain is blazing a trail that will be followed by older stablemate Evaporate (NZ) (Per Incanto), who will run in the TAB slot for Entain New Zealand in the $3.5 million The NZB Kiwi (1500m) on Champions’ Day at Ellerslie on March 8. “It’s really exciting and he (Hello Romeo) has raced well in Victoria and has travelled very well,” Ben Hayes said. “He’s handled all his work really well, he’s quite straight forward and flew over without a problem so we couldn’t be happier with him. “We’re all looking forward to it, it’s a good opportunity for our stable and Will and JD will be over for the race day, and I’ll be getting over after the Saturday races here for the sale.” Bred by Jomara Bloodstock, who remain in the ownership group, Hello Romeo was a $150,000 purchase for Lindsay Park out of Hallmark Stud’s New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale draft and is a son of the Shooting To Win mare Julieta. She is an unraced half-sister to Humidor, three-time Group One winner of the Australian Cup (2000m), Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and the Memsie Stakes (1400m). “Even at the sale, he was a big, strong type of horse from the first crop of Hello Youmzain and he was just a really nice type,” Hayes said. Hello Romeo finished runner-up over 1000m in his spring debut at Bendigo and went one better over the course and distance at his next appearance. He then finished fourth over 1100m at Ballarat before a break and returned to finish second in a Flemington jump-out over 800m before heading to New Zealand. “He’s got a very high cruising speed and puts himself on pace and I think that’s a good recipe for Ellerslie,” Hayes said. “Matthew Cartwright will ride him, he’s done a lot of riding for us over here.” Meanwhile, the well-performed Evaporate has pleased the stable since his return to work. “He’s in great order and will trial on Friday and will run in either the CS Hayes Stakes (Gr.3, 1400m) or the Autumn Stakes (Gr.2, 1400m) before he heads over and target the big race second-up,” Hayes said. Evaporate has won four of his 10 starts, including the Gr.2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) and finished runner-up in the Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m). The son of Per Incanto was spelled after tailing the field home in the Gr.1 Cox Plate (2040m). He was bought by Lindsay Park for A$330,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale where he was offered by Sledmere Stud on behalf of breeder Little Avondale Stud, who remain in the ownership. 4. What Pakenham Races Where Southside Racing Pakenham – 420 Nar Nar Goon – Longwarry Rd, Tynong VIC 3810 When Thursday, January 23, 2025 First Race 5:45pm AEDT Visit Dabble Pakenham is the destination for the sole horse racing meeting in Victoria on Thursday, with an eight-race meeting set down for decision. Showers are forecast on Thursday afternoon, yet the track is not expected to deteriorate too much from its early Good 4 rating. The rail will return to its true position, with the opening event set to jump at 5:45pm AEDT. Best Bet at Pakenham: Leonchroi Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr) are set to cut the ribbons on three-year-old gelding Leonchroi, who comes to the Pakenham opener on the back of an eye-catching jumpout victory at Cranbourne. The Contributer gelding showed a strong turn of foot under hands and heels along the rail, and the draw in barrier one for his debut looks ideal. With Damian Lane on board, Leonchroi looks the likely leader and should prove too slick. Best Bet Race 1 – #8 Leonchroi (1) 3yo Gelding | T: Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr) | J: Damian Lane (58kg) Bet with Neds Next Best at Pakenham: Untapped Untapped could not have been more impressive when breaking maiden ranks fresh from a spell at the Pakenham 1200m on January 10. The son of Foxwedge settled midfield and produced a strong finish to score by 2.3 lengths with plenty left in reserve. The step up to 1400m looks ideal, and if Zac Spain can lob him in a similar position from barrier eight, Untapped should be winning again. Next Best Race 7 – #8 Untapped (8) 3yo Gelding | T: Greg Eurell | J: Zac Spain (58.5kg) Bet with BlondeBet Best Value at Pakenham: Sweet As A Kiss With a bit of luck, punters should get an each-way price with horse racing bookmakers on Sweet As A Kiss after she savaged the line in her second career start at Mornington. Having settled at the rear of the six-horse field, the Vino Rosso filly quickened sharply to be beaten under a length. The straight at Pakenham should suit her better than Mornington’s did, and if she produces a similar finish, Sweet As A Kiss will be fighting it out at the end. 5. In Haste powering away with her maiden victory in the Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race (1200m) at Matamata on Wednesday. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) The TAB Racing Club could be in for an exciting couple of months with their juvenile filly In Haste, with the daughter of Snitzel set to tackle some stakes assignments following her dominant win at Matamata on Wednesday. With just a quartet of rivals in the Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race (1200m), In Haste was taken straight to the front where jockey Craig Grylls dictated the pace throughout. In Haste quickly put several lengths on her rivals at the top of the straight and ran out a comfortable 4-1/4 length victor. Grylls was pleased with In Haste’s maiden victory, having guided her to a runner-up result on debut, and the leading Waikato hoop believes a bright future is instore for the filly. “She relaxed really nice, which is good, and she found a really good kick off the turn,” he said. “It was pretty easy and she has got a bright future I think.” Sam Bergerson, who trains In Haste in partnership with Mark Walker, was rapt with the result on their home track and he now has his sights on the Group 2 Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) with his filly next month. “She was very tractable and showed a really good turn of foot,” Bergerson said. “It’s onwards and upwards for her and hopefully we can get her back here in a few weeks’ time for the Matamata Breeders.” Bergerson said it is exciting to have a promising filly for the TAB Racing Club, an Entain Australia and New Zealand initiative which promotes racehorse ownership among TAB customers, mirrored off the success off their Ladbrokes Racing Club in Australia, and is free to join. “What they are doing for racing is massive, so to get a result like that with a filly who’s hopefully going to go on to better things is really exciting,” he said. In Haste was purchased by Ladbrokes Racing Club out of Newgate Farm’s 2024 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $400,000, with the Australian farm remaining in the ownership of the filly. While pleased with In Haste’s performance, Bergerson was left frustrated with stablemate Born To Be Royal’s run, despite her runner-up result. “She seemed to find a lot of trouble unfortunately during the run,” he said. “She looked like she was going to get the gun run in behind the speed, but got shuffled back and on the corner she got held up. “She was good late, she has got a big, lovely stride on her and we certainly think she is capable of better. I think she will take great benefit from today’s outing.” Horse racing news View the full article

  7. Zou Tiger winning the 2024 Carrington Stakes. Photo: Bradleyphotos.com.au Saturday’s Listed $200,000 Carrington Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick has been called off after a lack of acceptors for the event. While six horses had initially accepted for the race, several were also entered in other feature events across the country, including three Listed races over 1400m scheduled for the same day. Among the horses affected, last-start Wyong winner Grand Impact and Richard and Will Freedman’s Elettrica were both entered in the Listed $160,000 Sunshine Coast Cup (1400m) at the Sunshine Coast. Elettrica has also accepted for the Listed $175,000 John Dillon Stakes (1400m) at Sandown, where stablemate Coastwatch has secured a start. Other nominations for the Carrington Stakes, including Just Folk and Chorlton Lane, remained in Victoria. Accredited, an impressive winner of his past three starts, was a clear favourite with horse racing bookmakers in pre-final field betting for the Carrington Stakes, leaving connections disappointed with no race to run in this weekend. The Carrington Stakes, first run in 1930 and won by Pavilion, has a long history, and the cancellation of this year’s edition marks an unusual turn of events for the race. 11. Odds Bookmakers News Field Past Winners Rubiton Stakes Group Two Betting Guide Date: Saturday, February 8, 2025 Location: Caulfield Racecourse – Melbourne, Victoria Prize Money: $300,000 Distance: 1400m The Rubiton Stakes is a prestigious Group 2 sprint hosted by the Melbourne Racing Club at Caulfield, open to elite sprinters. First contested in 1989, it was won by the legendary Zeditave. The race covers 1100m under Set Weights and Penalties conditions, with a prize pool of $300,000 in 2025. Named after Cox Plate winner Rubiton, the event started as a Listed race, achieved Group 3 status in 1991, and was upgraded to Group 2 in 2013. Historically, mares struggled in this race until a trio of victories early in the 2020s. Notably, Nature Strip triumphed in 2019, on his way to becoming one of the world’s top sprinters. Anaheed (2020) and Prophet’s Thumb (2021) further highlighted the growing success of fillies and mares. Prominent past winners include Schillaci (1993, 1995), Super Elegant (2003–2005), Bomber Bill (2006), Lankan Rupee (2014), and Chautauqua (2015). In 2024, Kallos claimed victory ahead of Asfoora and Zapateo. 2025 Rubiton Stakes betting odds Betting odds for the 2025 Rubiton Stakes are currently unavailable. HorseBetting will update the Rubiton Stakes odds once released. How to bet on the Rubiton Stakes Every horse racing bookmaker will have betting on the Rubiton Stakes available. Many of them will open an early market so you can wager on the race a week or so in advance. Unlike many of the bigger races the Rubiton Stakes acceptances are only done a few days before the race so you won’t find a market many weeks in advance. Aussie bookies like Dabble offer all of the usual bet types on the race and you will have the option of using ‘boosted odds’ at some of them. This simply means you place your win bet and use the boosted odds option, which could send a $10 shot out to $15. This provides great value and is as good a reason as any to bet online. Under the skilful guidance of jockey Blake Shinn, riding for trainer James Cummings, Kallos made a decisive move down the centre of the track, clinching victory by a length over the short-priced favourite Asfoora ($1.75), with stablemate Zapateo ($8.50) finishing a long head back in third. Boasting his fourth stakes success, Kallos now boasts a record of seven wins, two seconds, and a third from 19 starts, accumulating earnings of $797,205. 2023: Lofty Strikes Scenes of jubilation surrounded the Sandown mounting yard as the Julius Sandhu-trained Lofty Strike reigned supreme in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes. Having not been seen at the races since finishing a length off Roch ‘N’ Horse in the Group 1 Champions Sprint on November 5, the three-year-old colt showed no signs of ring rust when unleashing a stunning turn of foot to claim his second career Group 2 success. The race set up perfectly for a backmarker to swoop, with the Peter Moody-trained Oxley Road making the 1100m event a genuinely run event. Despite race favourite Uncommon James looking the winner with 200m to go, it was Lofty Strike under Craig Newitt who went home the best 2022: Kah guides Marine One to impressive victory The punters got it right in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday with the well backed favourite Marine One ($3.20) taking out the event. The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained colt recorded his fourth race victory and first at stakes level in the $300,000 feature. Jamie Kah produced a top ride to guide the colt to victory. Kah settled Marine One in third position, getting the run of the race behind the two leaders. Staying off the fence, which didn’t seem the place to be at Caulfield, Marine One then hit the front 50m from home to draw away to win by over a length. 15. Stakes-winning Tuscan Sky (Vino Rosso) (hip 7), winner of last year's listed Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park, topped the Fasig-Tipton January Digital Sale Tuesday when selling for $450,000 to West Bloodstock. The January Digital Sale, which saw an average of $28,073 and a clearance rate of 79% for its catalogue of horses of racing age, racing/broodmare prospects, broodmares and short yearlings, closed Tuesday evening with 107 horses sold for $3,003,900. The 4-year-old Tuscan Sky, last raced in the GIII Harlan's Holiday Stakes Dec. 21, was offered as a horse of racing age by ELiTE, agent. A multiple stakes performer who competed in the GII Wood Memorial Stakes and the GI NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes as a 3-year-old, Tuscan Sky is a half-brother to Grade II-winning millionaire and sire Private Creed (Jimmy Creed), out of the stakes-winning Sky Mesa mare South Andros. “This sale was a great way to start the year,” said Fasig-Tipton's Director of Digital Sales Leif Aaron. “There were more scratches than I would have liked, but that is the nature of horse sales. The top five prices all represented different segments of the market, which shows an incredibly deep buying bench. We are continuing to see growth from buyers that have never purchased from Fasig-Tipton. I'm very encouraged for the rest of 2025.” Tuscan Sky Tops January Digital Sale on #FasigDigital Read more https://t.co/Fdm0mjBBmM pic.twitter.com/p4mJZXteQV — Fasig-Tipton (@FasigTiptonCo) January 21, 2025 Top hips sold also included: Sav (Big Screen) (hip 26), a broodmare in foal to the late Uncle Mo, sold for $150,000 to Town and Country and Pollock Farms. 16. Strangles Detected in North Canterbury: What Horse Owners Need to Know Horse owners in North Canterbury are advised to remain vigilant following the detection of a Strangles case in the region. While this case is not connected to the racing community, Strangles is a highly contagious notifiable bacterial disease, and proactive measures are essential to protect your horses. What is Strangles? Strangles is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus equi, primarily affecting the upper respiratory tract of horses. It spreads rapidly through: Direct Contact: Nose-to-nose interaction between horses. Indirect Contact: Shared equipment, contaminated water buckets, feed troughs, or tack. Environmental Contamination: The bacteria can survive for days to weeks in favorable conditions, increasing the risk of indirect transmission. While most horses recover with proper care, complications such as abscess formation in other parts of the body (“bastard strangles”), prolonged illness, or, in rare cases, death can occur. Early detection and management are crucial to minimizing its impact. Symptoms to Watch For Be alert for these signs of Strangles: Fever: A temperature above 38.5°C. Nasal Discharge: Thick, pus-like discharge. Swelling or Abscesses: Around the head and neck (lymph nodes). Cough: Difficulty eating or a reduced appetite. Breathing Issues: Respiratory noise or labored breathing. How to Protect Your Horse Vaccinate: A Strangles vaccine can help prevent infection or reduce the severity of symptoms. Limit Contact: Avoid nose-to-nose interaction and shared equipment with potentially infected horses. Isolate: Do not move horses to or from affected properties. Travel Wisely: Carefully assess the risks of transporting horses, especially if they are unvaccinated. If your horse shows any symptoms, isolate them immediately and contact your veterinarian for testing and guidance. By staying informed and practicing good biosecurity, we can help protect our equine community and limit the spread of Strangles. View the full article

  18. Traffic Warden winning the Group 2 Run To The Rose. Photo: bradleyphotos.com.au Trainer James Cummings is ready to take dual Group 2 winner Traffic Warden to the next level this autumn, with the three-year-old’s preparation set to begin at the Rosehill barrier trials on Thursday. The Street Boss colt showed promise in his spring campaign, securing a win in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) and a placing in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1200m). However, his campaign took a downturn after he was scratched at the barriers for the $20 million Group 1 The Everest (1200m) and then finished unplaced in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m). Despite these setbacks, Cummings remains confident in Traffic Warden’s ability to claim a Group 1 victory. “He’s a Run To The Rose winner, the quality of horses that have won that race speaks volumes about what class of horse he is,” Cummings said. “A narrow second in the Golden Rose is not to be sneezed at either so I wouldn’t underestimate the horse. “We can aim high with him, and the team remains extremely hopeful he has that big-race performance on the right day in him.” Traffic Warden’s autumn campaign will begin with a first-up run next month before heading to the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) and the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m). Zac Lloyd has been booked to ride the colt in the 900-metre trial at Rosehill, marking the first step in what Cummings hopes will be a standout autumn for the promising sprinter. After jumping a little slow from barrier two, Mertens allowed the daughter of Pariah to settle and get into a rhythm three back on the rail, while Penthouse ($5.50) set a solid tempo out in front. As the field rounded the home turn, it appeared as though Jordan Childs had pinched a winning gap on Penthouse as the rest of her rivals started to struggle but Mertens was picking them off along the rail and making solid ground. Once Vagrant was given full bore and got clear, she finished off with a blistering turn of foot and put the race to bed within a few strides and defeated Penthouse and Party For One ($9.00) to claim a valuable black type victory for her connections. 2023: Wrote To Arataki lives up to favourite tag Jamie Kah and Matthew Williams combined with Wrote To Arataki in the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes at Sandown, as the four-year-old mare led every step of the 1300m. As the day went on Wrote To Arataki shortened as each race went by, jumping as a $3.10 favourite with online bookmakers, as the punters were quick to work out that the soft Sandown Hillside track was favouring leaders and on-speed runners. This daughter of Wrote has now recorded back-to-back wins in town and her first black type victory, after Kah piloted her to success at Flemington in a Benchmark 70 Handicap on New Year’s Day. Wrote To Arataki has gone from winning her maiden at Warrnambool to winning a Group 3 at Sandown, all within the last 12 months. 2022: Probabeel defends crown Star New Zealand mare Probabeel snatched her second consecutive win in the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield. The champion five-year-old was sent out as a $1.75 favourite in the final race of the day, and although she got the job done for punters, it was far from an easy watch. Trained by Jamie Richards, the daughter of Savabeel was having her first run for the autumn, before she looks to make it back-to-back Futurity Stakes (1400m) in a fortnight. In just a seven-horse field, jockey Brett Prebble settled the $4 million earner in the second half of the field, before producing her to the extreme outside at the top of the straight. Mariamia gave a strong kick at the furlong to give her chasers a mammoth task, but such is Probabeel’s fighting qualities, she knuckled down and got her head in front right where it counts – the winning post. 2021: Probabeel displays all her star qualities Probabeel is on target to fly the Kiwi flag in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) and the $5 million All-Star Mile (1600m) after proving a class above her rivals in the 2021 Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield. The multiple Group One winner carried 60kgs in the mares race and travelled wide throughout from the outside barrier before forging clear in the straight under jockey Damian Lane. 20. The Dennis Brothers’ contribution to Southland racing will be acknowledged by their peers at Ascot Park on Thursday where the Southland Racing Club will hold the ‘Dennis Brothers Dynasty Day’. The brothers brought the curtain down on a near six-decade training career earlier this season, and their local club have elected to acknowledge their achievements by naming six races on Thursday’s eight-race card after their past Champion racehorses. Local trainer Robert Dennis, whose father Tony is part of the Dennis Brothers quarter alongside Ray, Martin and Joe, is pleased to see their contribution to the racing community acknowledged. “They (Dennis Brothers) stepped back from training earlier this season and the Southland Racing Club are acknowledging their contribution to not only racing in Southland, but racing in New Zealand, and are having the ‘Dennis Brothers Dynasty Day’,” Robert Dennis said. “Apart from The Kurd, who is the foundation mare, the others have all been Champions at the New Zealand Racing Awards.” That quintet includes The Jewel, The Pixie, The Fantasy, The Twinkle, and the Dimple. Dennis took on the brothers remaining quartet of racehorses upon their retirement, adding to his burgeoning Ascot Park operation, which will be represented by 11 runners on Thursday, including stable newcomer Miss Layla. Purchased by Dennis out of Kiltannon Stables’ 2021 New Zealand Bloodstock Book 2 Yearling Sale draft for $20,000, she was entrusted to the care of Riccarton trainers Shane Kennedy and Anna Furlong. She won two races for the stable, including the Listed NZB Airfreight Stakes (1600m) at just her third career start. While she hasn’t won since then, she has placed in the Gr.3 Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes (1400m) and Listed Timaru Stakes (1400m). Looking to recapture form, the daughter of Burgundy was sent south to tackle the Summer Cup (2147m) at Riverton on New Year’s Day, where she finished fourth, and the decision was made to keep her in the south under Dennis’ care. “She is a high-quality horse, she is a Listed winner, but it has been a while since she has won a race,” Dennis said. “We thought we might be better to target the easiest race we could, and I think we have found it on Thursday.” Miss Layla will line-up in The Pixie (2200m) where she will be ridden from the ace barrier with three-kilogram claiming apprentice Amber Riddell aboard, which will bring her allotted weight down to 56.5kg. “I am grateful for Amber to come down and ride a handful for us and her three-kilogram claim will certainly help, and she has ridden the horse before too, which is going to help,” Dennis said. “Hopefully she can have a good confidence builder on Thursday, and if she did, we could maybe look at some of the Cups races down here with her.” Miss Layla will be joined in the race by stablemate Stolen Magic who ended her purple patch of form with a subpar ninth placed run in the Summer Cup earlier this month. “She had a little freshen-up after Riverton and she has run well at Invercargill before,” Dennis said. “The small field is going to help and with 52.5 kilos on her back, I would expect her to run a bold race.” Dennis will have a three-pronged attack in The Dimple (1400m) courtesy of Loftys Gift, Medina and Vino Valentino. “Medina was a bit of headscratcher last time at Riverton (eighth). We were disappointed with that,” Dennis said. “She does have a pretty ordinary second-up record so hopefully that’s all it was. We are expecting to see her run an improved race. “Loftys Gift is fresh-up since the first day of Cup Week in the Metropolitan (Listed, 2600m). She usually runs quite well fresh and hopefully she is on track for some of the southern Cups races. “Vino Valentino is fresh after running on Melbourne Cup Day. She will probably need the run and look to improve as she steps up in trip next time.” Dennis will also be represented by debutant Leona and Sailor Girl in The Fantasy (1200m), last start runner-up Pretty Fly and The Ocean Heart in the Enatin/NZB Insurance Pearl Series (1400m), Nake Spirit in the NZB Mega Maiden Series (1600m), and Xrated in The Twinkle 2200m. “The first starter, Leona, in the 1200m will probably need the run and experience,” Dennis said. “Sailor Girl, if she gets off the ballot, I would like to think she will run an improved race on a firmer track. “It was a super effort last time from Pretty Fly. She has still got a fair bit to learn, but she has got a fair bit of ability. I think she will be hard to beat. “The Ocean Heart will be a quality horse in time, but just needs to learn a bit and develop a bit more. She is a lovely filly, and a half to a Group One winner (The Perfect Pink). “Naked Spirit, I am expecting an improved performance from him with a more positive ride. He has been working well. “Xrated was a good third last time at Timaru. She mixes her runs, but she has been working well, looks the part and it is not an overly strong race. She is a genuine stayer and I think she will run well.” Following Thursday’s meeting, Dennis will head north to New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale at Karaka where he is hoping his good run of sourcing quality fillies can continue. “Hopefully I can come back with another two or three nice fillies,” he said. “I have bought four fillies between $20,000 and $25,000 – Goldie’s Chance and Miss Layla are both stakes winners, and Quintabelle and Betty Spaghetti are both stakes placed. Between them they have won nearly $500,000.” View the full article

  23. Blake Shinn guides Ostraka to victory in the Silver Eagle. Photo: bradleyphotos.com.au Promising gelding Ostraka is back in work and ready for an exciting autumn campaign, with trainer Annabel Neasham targeting sprint trips for the four-year-old. The Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) is among the many options under consideration. Ostraka impressed last year, stringing together four consecutive victories from June to October, culminating in a victory in the $1 million Silver Eagle (1300m). However, his subsequent 13th-place finish in the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) highlighted the gelding’s limitations over longer distances. Neasham, who trains Ostraka alongside Rob Archibald, believes the 1500-metre race was too far for him. “He went to a new level last campaign and we learned more about him,” Neasham said. “He’s a really big horse now and you can certainly see that the physical improvement translated on the track. “We stretched him out to 1500 metres in the Golden Eagle and he wasn’t as effective as he was over the shorter trips, so we’ll probably keep him to the sprint distances. “Anything from 1100 metres to 1400 metres is ideal.” With many of Ostraka’s owners based in Melbourne, Neasham is also keen to explore the options down south. “I know a lot of the ownership group are in Melbourne so I’m certainly keen to have a look down there – we could even look at the Newmarket with him. “He’s a very exciting sprinter.” Ostraka is listed as a $26 winning chance with horse racing bookmakers for the Newmarket Handicap. 25. Blake Shinn returns to the mounting yard on Apache Song. (Photo by Reg Ryan/Racing Photos) Trainer Michael Trotter is looking to build on the success of his recent stakes victory with Rumbled Again as he aims for a big performance at Moonee Valley on Friday night. His in-form mare, Apache Song, will line up in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) under jockey Damian Lane. The Group 2 event marks a significant step up in class for the four-year-old, whose last victory came in Benchmark 78 company. Despite the tougher competition, Trotter is optimistic, particularly due to Apache Song’s strong record at The Valley. The mare has contested her last four races at the circuit, all at Friday’s 1200-metre distance, and secured three consecutive wins. Trotter is confident that the mare’s fitness and improvement this campaign will hold her in good stead as she faces stiffer opposition. “She had some pretty lofty heights set upon her early, and this time around we’ve been able to go through her grades,” Trotter explained. “She’s continued to thrive because of that and now is as good a time as any to give her a try in a good race and being at The Valley where she thrives, why not?” The trainer went on to draw comparisons between Apache Song and his recent stakes winner, Rumbled Again. “She’s a bit like Rumbled Again, she showed the same talent so it’s nice to see Apache furnish and do all the right things on race day.” Despite acknowledging that rivals such as Southport Tycoon and Schwartz will be tough to beat, Trotter is hopeful of a strong showing. “I think we’re a genuine top four chance, so you never know,” he said.
