Harness Racing New Zealand’s eighth Team Teal campaign will wrap up with a big day at Motukarara on Sunday. The annual fund-raiser for ovarian cancer research started on February 1, with money raised every time a female driver wins a race. The money comes from HRNZ, clubs and drivers’ individual sponsors. So far the 2025 campaign has raised over $16,000, with 63 wins. Sam Ottley has the most with 14. On Sunday, the Team Hutchinson-sponsored race day at Motukarara, will see the campaign finish with a flourish. One of the features will be the first ever Teal Trot. Racegoers will get the opportunity to bid on which Team Teal driver they would like to push them in a sulky for 50 metres. There will be five sulkies in the “race”. The winner will get a $250 prezzy card. The Teal Trot will be held after Race 9 (4.27pm). There’ll also be dual sulky races and Team Teal collectors on-course. A total of 120 tickets have been sold for the event which will be MC’d by popular radio personality Hilary Muir. The night will also feature the Frocks at the Trots final. Heats for the teal-themed competition have been held around the country in recent weeks with the top 12 battling it out in Friday’s final. The judging panel will include Instagram Influencer and BONNIE Skin business owner Mary Oh. Among those attending on Friday will be Team Teal founder Duncan McPherson. He lost his wife Lyn to ovarian cancer in 2010. After starting in Victoria, the campaign expanded to New South Wales in 2016 and the other Australian states in 2017 and internationally to New Zealand in 2018. High-class mare Coeur Volante (NZ) (Proisir) will be out to deliver an emotional Gr.1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) win for connections just over two weeks after the death of her popular trainer Michael Moroney. The Melbourne Cup-winning horseman died in his sleep last month after recently making a training comeback following a serious battle with illness. His training partner Glen Thompson will saddle up Coeur Volante in Saturday’s Rosehill feature and says the mare has continued to please the stable since her sweeping four-length win in last month’s Gr.2 Mannerism Stakes (1400m). “She has done very well. She is really handling her racing this time, which is good to see,” Thompson said. “I think the trip away to Queensland really toughened her up and hopefully she gets up there and settles in well and she is going to run a hell of a race. “We always thought she was a Group One horse and hopefully she shows that on Saturday.” Coeur Volante had a two-start preparation in Brisbane during last year’s winter carnival and was unplaced in both races. However, Thompson admitted the mare was impacted by the travel and that was his only concern ahead of her Sydney trip. “The only worry is how she copes with the travelling,” he said. “She struggled a bit last time and it has definitely toughened her up but she has got to go back and do it again. Whether she copes with that or not, we’ll find out on Saturday. “If she stays where she’s at at the moment, she will be competitive in whatever she runs in.” Fittingly, Kerrin McEvoy has been charged with the task of partnering Coeur Volante in the Coolmore Classic (1500m). McEvoy was a 20-year-old apprentice when he won the first of his three Melbourne Cups aboard the Moroney-trained Brew 25 years ago. Coeur Volante, who has drawn the inside gate, is a $9.50 chance for Saturday’s feature. Bred by Fairdale Stud, Coeur Volante is one of 21 stakes winners by Rich Hill Stud stallion Proisir. Out of the Testa Rossa mare Shanina, Coeur Volante was purchased by Paul Moroney Bloodstock in conjunction with Ballymore Stables for $90,000 out of the Prima Park draft during the Book 1 Yearling Sale at Karaka in 2022. Talented gelding Hasstobeawinner (NZ) (Vadamos) has lived up to his name this preparation and will be tested for the first time in Group company in Saturday’s Gr.2 Ultimate Mazda Japan Trophy (1600m) at Tauranga. The son of Vadamos had always shown promise and was rewarded for consistency with a lucrative prize in the Stella Artois 1500 Championship Final, an effort he only improved off to finish second behind the airborne El Vencedor in the Listed Fulton Family Stakes (1500m). In preparation for the Tauranga feature, Hasstobeawinner carried the top-weight at Taupo over 1400m and lost no admirers, firing into third while giving away nearly six kilograms to the winner, Channel Surfer. Robert Wellwood, who trains the five-year-old in partnership with Roger James, had plenty to praise in his most recent effort. “I thought it was a good run, he didn’t get all favours and carried 60 kilos,” he said. “To see him round off the way he did, after not enjoying the track all that much, we were very impressed. “His record right-handed is as good as anything, so we’re looking forward to seeing him go right-handed and up over a bit further. “We’ve targeted this race to some extent with them and we’ll get this out of the way before making any plans going further.” Joining Hasstobeawinner in the contest will be Dionysus (NZ) (Ocean Park), a Group Three-winning stayer resuming from a freshen-up. While Saturday’s distance may not be right up his alley, Wellwood and James have their eye on a bigger prize in a fortnight at Trentham. “He worked really nicely this week and the mile may be a tad sharp for him, but expect to see him making big bounds late,” Wellwood said. He’s hopefully going to go on to the Awapuni Gold Cup after this, and we’d love to see him get back to his best form for that race.” The stable had hoped to send three-year-old maideners Surprise Inside (NZ) (Per Incanto) and Hephaestus (NZ) (The Autumn Sun) their separate ways across the weekend, but barrier draws have determined the pair will both start at Pukekohe on Friday in the TAB 1600. A son of Per Incanto, Surprise Inside powered home into second last-start behind Ima Warrior, while Hephaestus produced a similar effort on debut, finishing a tidy fifth in a race won by Deadly Desire. “They are both nice horses, we thought we would see how they drew to split them up but they’ve drawn the exact same places in both,” Wellwood said. “We feel that Pukekohe is the better track for both of them (over Tauranga), it’s nice and roomy. It would be great to see them do something that could lead on to a nice race in the autumn.” Meanwhile, Wellwood and James are yet to determine the next course of action for their star mare Orchestral (NZ) (Savabeel), after she finished sixth in the Gr.1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m) on Champions Day. “We’re yet to decide on Orchestral, she was very disappointing early in the race and had been negative in her behaviour throughout the day, even travelling up in the truck,” Wellwood said. “Interestingly enough, she still ran the quickest last 800, 600 and 400 of the race, but you don’t get any cups for doing that. “We’ve given her a quiet week, changed a few things up and we’ll make a plan in the next week or so where we head with her.” View the full article

Expat Kiwi John Sargent is noted as a trainer of staying fillies and two of the Randwick conditioner’s leading Oaks hopefuls will be given the chance to showcase their wares this week. Stablemates Powers Of Opal (NZ) (Ocean Park) and Inevitable Truth (Fastnet Rock) both have the Gr.1 Australian Oaks (2400m) as their carnival goal but the pair will take different paths towards it. Powers Of Opal will have her next start in Saturday’s Gr.2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill before heading to the blue riband via the Gr.1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m). Inevitable Truth heads to the Gr.3 Kembla Grange Classic (1600m) on Friday, hoping to stake her credentials and emulate the feat of Sargent’s former smart mare Luvaluva, who won it in 2018. Runner-up in the Gr.1 VRC Oaks (2500m) Powers Of Opal ended up on an inferior section of the track when unplaced behind Lady Shenandoah first-up in the Gr.1 Surround Stakes (1400m) after making good headway between the 400m and 200m. Saturday’s race will be another stepping stone but Sargent predicts an improved performance. “On what I’m seeing in the last couple of weeks, she has definitely gone up a level,” Sargent said. “Hopefully you see it on Saturday and then she will really be in the thick of it in the Vinery and the Oaks. “She is still probably short of her best distance on Saturday but with Lady Shenandoah out and a couple of others, I’d like to see her hitting the line strongly.” Powers of Opal chased home star filly Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) in both the Gr.2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) and the VRC Oaks and Sargent is conscious that Powers Of Opal will need to continue to improve to foot it with her key rival in the Vinery and Oaks. “We will have to go up a level,” he said. “Let’s hope she doesn’t travel too well. She looks extraordinary and she has just carried on with how good she was in the spring so we will have to lift our game to take her on in the Vinery. “I think our filly can do that. She is on her home turf now, she doesn’t have to go far to race and once we get out in distance, let’s hope we can improve because Treasurethe Moment has been very impressive in Melbourne.” Sargent outlaid $130,000 to purchase Powers Of Opal at the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale from the draft of Curraghmore, and returned to the source to secure her yearling half-sister by Proisir for $700,000 in conjunction with Duncan Ramage and Spicer Thoroughbreds. Daylight Robbery (NZ) (Super Seth) has given owner-trainer Gavin Sharrock an exciting ride this season, but it has come to a premature end after the son of Super Seth sustained a muscle strain this week. Set to contest the Wanganui Insurance Brokers 2YO 1200 on Saturday, for which he was a $3 favourite, Daylight Robbery will now head to the spelling paddock in preparation for a three-year-old preparation. “He galloped really well on Tuesday and then yesterday (Wednesday) when we went to work him, he was a bit sore in the hindquarter, so he has obviously pulled a muscle,” said Sharrock, who owns the gelding in partnership with Cliff Erb. “It is gut-wrenching, he galloped so well on Tuesday, and I have never felt so happy with the horse and then the next day you are at the bottom of the heap.” Purchased for $10,500 out of Waikato Stud’s 2024 New Zealand Bloodstock Online Yearling Sale draft on Gavelhouse.com, Daylight Robbery went on to win one and finish runner-up in two of his first three starts before running seventh in the Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m) and a game fourth behind subsequent Group One winner Return To Conquer in the Gr.3 Matamata Slipper (1200m). Sharrock was looking forward to stepping him up over ground in the Gr.1 Courtesy Ford Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at the end of the month, believing his charge would appreciate the extra distance. “We have had a win and a couple of seconds, and in the big races he has been a little bit unlucky. You Say D’Orsay (NZ) (Under The Louvre) will continue his path towards next month’s Gr.3 Manco Easter Handicap (1600m) at Ellerslie when he heads to Tauranga on Saturday to contest the Stu Cundy Bayleys Country & Lifestyle 1400. The Under The Louvre four-year-old has finished fourth in his last two outings, including the $1 million Aotearoa Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie in January, and trainer Chris Wood believes his gelding can figure in the finish this weekend. “He is really good, I am really happy with him,” the Cambridge conditioner said. “We pulled him out last weekend when he drew the outside gate. I could see a little bit of pace in the race, so we decided to go to Saturday. “He has drawn okay (7), but he is an on-pace horse, he doesn’t have to lead but he can lead. “He is really bright. The John Wheeler-prepared representative will shoot for four wins on the bounce in the Group 2 Japan Trophy (1600m) to draw to a close a preparation that has seen him justify his trainer’s belief. Herbert has recently been successful at Wanganui and Matamata and in between times, claimed the thick end of the stake on his home track at New Plymouth in the Group 3 Taranaki Cup (1800m). This weekend’s northern venture will also provide the gelding with a right-handed experience that will stand him in good stead for future options. “He’ll go out after Saturday, everybody thinks I’ll take him to Brisbane, but he’ll have had his grand finals,” Wheeler said. “I’ll give him a spell and he’ll probably go to Sydney or Melbourne in the spring. “That’s the main reason I’m starting at Tauranga, they go the opposite way around and that gives options later on. “I was going to start in the Awapuni Gold Cup (Group 2, 2100m), but that’s at Trentham and for some obscure reason he’s never gone any good there. He’s only beaten one horse in four starts there.” Herbert is raced by Wheeler with former Taranaki Racing chief executive Carey Hobbs and another long-time friend Dennis Hunt. “Carey bought the mare for $900 on Gavelhouse with the foal at foot by Sweet Orange, he’s a lovely horse so he’s a real bargain,” Wheeler said. “Dennis is a mate of mine who had a building business in Australia, he’s a Kiwi but was there for 30 years or so. “He came home about four years ago, we’ve been close friends for 40 years.” Wheeler has long held a high opinion of Herbert and knew time would be the key to the horse fulfilling his potential. “Without gloating or anything, I said to Carey this is definitely a Group horse but we’ve had to get him to race properly and we’ve spent quite a bit of time and a few starts to get there,” he said. The daughter of Siyouni will carry 58 kilograms, with no horse having won the Coolmore with more than 57 kilograms since Sunline’s dual victories in 2000 and 2002 under 60 kilograms. “She will be giving weight away to some nice up-and-coming fillies and mares, it’s never easy to carry top weight, but she’s certainly the class horse of the field, and it’s nice to be going there off the back of a win,” said co-trainer Annabel Neasham who trains in partnership with Rob Archibald. Josh Parr will take over the ride on Amelia’s Jewel, following James McDonald’s successful first-up victory in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) on March 1. “We’ve had a bit of luck with him on the brother Bosustow, so Peter Walsh is happy to have Josh on. He came and galloped her (Tuesday), and he’s looking forward to partnering her,” Neasham added. “She’s not normally a leader, but they gifted her the lead the other day. Not sure they’ll do the same again. It’s all tempo-related, just ride her where she’s happy. “She’s got a great turn of foot. By Dave Di Somma, Harness News Desk Dating back to the first race in 1908 no horse has a better record in the Group 1 Fred Shaw Memorial New Zealand Trotting Championships than Muscle Mountain. Heading into Friday’s edition of the race at Addington, the Greg and Nine Hope-trained star is vying for his fourth win in five years, with Sundees Son breaking his winning run with a race record 3:10.4 in 2022. That time is still the New Zealand trotting record (2600m – Mobile). Muscle Mountain is the only trotter to have won the race three times. Overall he has won 35 from 61 and is currently at $974,884 in career earnings. If he wins on Friday he’ll earn another $55,500, pushing him into millionaire status. But the eight-year-old is up against it. Drawn on the second row he is a $4.50 second favourite with the clear top pick being rising star Bet N Win ($1.50). Muscle Mountain will be one of three Hope runners in the feature along with Midnight Dash ($15) and Mr Love ($61). Midnight Dash will be driven by Ricky May. He has won the Championship a record six times, jointly held with Bob Young from 1947 to 1969. There have been a few two-time winners of the race including back-to-back winners Speeding Spur (2018-2019), Stylish Monarch (2010-11), David Moss (1993 – 94), Nigel Craig (1977-78), Gold Horizon (1952-53) and Aerial Scott (1947-48). One of the most memorable races was in 1984 when Basil Dean, driven by Kerry O’Reilly, produced one of the great trotting performances in this country. He cut out the 2600 metres in a then world record 3:15.3. It broke his own national record by nearly five seconds and was also faster than the New Zealand pacers’ record at the time. That was 3:15.4 held jointly by Steel Jaw and Bonnie’s Chance. Īnitially the race was held over 3200 metres but changed to 2600 metres in 1977. It has had various names over the years including the NZ Hambletonian Handicap from 1950 to 1965. There were no races in 1938 and 1951, with it being held twice in 1951. Interestingly a trotter called Lazarus won the race in 1925. According to HRNZ records he won six from 35 starts. The Brent Lilley-trained seven-year-old is on the verge of becoming just the second trotting mare in Australasian history to top $A1 million in prize money. But an even bigger target awaits. Queen Elida, who will be retired in May, still has the time and opportunities to overtake former Kiwi glamour trotter One Over Kenny ($A1,060,394) as the richest trotting mare of all time. It would keep the record in the family, so to speak, with Queen Elida’s granddam, Nice One Kenny, being a sister to One Over Kenny. So far, Queen Elida’s 82 starts have netted 37 wins, 31 placings and earnings of $A982,295. She can take that to $A995,020 with victory in the second race at Melton on Saturday night where she is a $2.40 favourite. A week later Queen Elida will tackle the $60,000 Group 1 Sumthingaboutmaori Mares’ Free-For-All at Melton. It will be a big surprise if she doesn’t top the $A1 million over the next two weeks. After the Sumthingaboutmaori, Queen Elida will leave Lilley’s stables for the last time for two major NZ races and then retirement back in NZ. The first target is the $NZ600,000 TAB Trot at Cambridge on April 4, a race Queen Elida ran third in behind Just Believe and Callmethebreeze last year. Her final race will be the $NZ200,000 Group 1 Rowe Cup at Auckland’s Alexandra Park on May 2. “She might finish-up the richest (trotting) mare of all-time and it would be fitting. She’s been a star since her juvenile days and taking on the boys in so many of the biggest races,” Lilley said. “It’ll be a sentimental trip back to NZ with her, knowing we’ll be farewelling her from the stable after so long.” More immediately, Lilley is brimming with confidence going into Saturday night. “She hasn’t been the easiest mare to train at times with her feet and, more recently, some steering problems, but we had some vet work done after the (Sydney) Inter Dominion late last year and the signs are great,” he said. “Chris (Alford, driver) said she felt like the mare of old when she won the other night and she seems great at home. “This looks a really nice race for her despite the back row and then she gets to take on the girls only the week after. “The signs are she’ll be going out on top of her game and we’re thrilled about that.” Queen Elida already boasts seven Group 1 wins, along with thirds in the 2022 and 2023 Inter Dominion finals, along with last year’s third in the TAB Trot. This should turn into a genuine staying affair over the 2400m, and with Fernao yet to hit his ceiling third-up into the campaign, expect this guy to give a bold sight at a good price with horse racing bookmakers. by Jessica Martini & Christina Bossinakis OCALA, FL – The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training produced an additional two seven-figure juveniles during its second session Wednesday, with a filly by Good Magic leading the way when selling for $1.1 million to Sean Flanagan. Through two of three sessions of the March sale, 269 horses have grossed $39,588,000 for an average of $147,167 and a median of $70,000. Those numbers are down slightly from the end-of-session figures from last year's March sale, which included a $1.5-million session topper who was later reclassified as an RNA, but show an increase in average from OBS's finalized 2024 figures through two sessions. Those final figures show 323 horses grossing $45,835,000 for an average of $141,904 and a median of $70,000. The action picked up noticeably during the auction's second day Wednesday, with just 31 horses listed as buy-backs at the end of the day. The session's 17.8% buy-back rate lowered the two-day figure to 21.8%. “The sales seems a lot more positive [Wednesday], some faster times and a little more for the buyers to look after,” said Top Line Sales' Jimbo Gladwell. “It's a good vibe around here and things are going good.” Through two sessions, Top Line is the sale's leading consignor with 15 head sold–including the $1.1-million topper–for $5,390,000. Still, consignors continued to see a polarized market during the first juvenile sale of the season. “We struggled a little the first day, but when you bring up the right horse, you get rewarded,” said David Scanlon. Eddie Woods, who consigned the day's first seven-figure juvenile, a $1-million son of Independence Hall, said, “It's dodgy to say the least. It's not all roses. For the cheaper horses, forget that. No one there at home at all.” The number of withdrawn horses also remained high Wednesday. From 544 catalogued lots, a full 200 were scratched before going through the ring. “It's an early sale,” Scanlon said of the number of outs. “We have other options. So, if you don't get the action you're looking for, and you still believe in your horse, we will live another day. Especially with the first day when you had a bad day with the wind, you feel like maybe I could get a better day and maybe have a better performance.” The two million-dollar juveniles Wednesday join Tuesday's $1-million session-topping son of Maxfield to bring the total at the auction so far to three. There were four million-dollar horses at the 2024 auction. Through two sessions, 17 horses have sold for $500,000 or more. That figure was 23 at the same point in 2024. The OBS March sale concludes with a final session Thursday beginning at 11 a.m. Flanagan Racing Leads Day 2 at OBS With Good Magic Topping Filly After securing a $650,000 Midshipman colt earlier in Wednesday's session, John Kimmel and Nick Sallusto handling the buying duties on behalf of Flanagan Racing jumped to the front of pack when bidding $1.1 million for Hip 486, a filly by Good Magic. During last Friday's show, the Don Alberto-bred juvenile breezed an eighth in :9 4/5. Outbid on Tuesday's session-topping Maxfield colt, the Flanagan Racing team was intent on landing Wednesday's top prize, but appeared to be getting close to the cut-off point. “I guess that was about as far as we were going to go,” admitted trainer John Kimmel, who handled the signing duties on the filly. “These good fillies that breeze well and have the physical that she has, you really have to pay for.” “Phenomenal. Out of unraced Rose Mine (Street Cry {Ire}), the bay is from the family of champion older mare and GI Breeders' Cup Distaff heroine Escena. “Phenomenal,” said Kimmel when asked about the purchase. “She was the highest-graded filly I saw. Her physical attributes were something where if you could produce offspring that look like her, she'll be a hell of a broodmare. The thing about her is she has the look of a real quality filly. I've had many good fillies over the years and this filly exudes that kind of quality. Time will tell.” Making two purchases Wednesday, Flanagan Racing ranked as the Day 2 leading buyer with $1.75 million in gross expenditures. “We came here strictly looking for colts,” admitted Kimmel with a chuckle when asked what the team was looking for this week. Kimmel and Sallusto confirmed the filly will be trained by Chad Brown, who also trains MGISW Chancer McPatrick for Sean Flanagan. “[Flanagan's] good friend [trainer] Danny Gargan highly recommended this filly to Sean Flanagan,” the team said. “Flanagan asked [Sallusto and Kimmel] to consult on the horse and to be there to purchase the horse on his behalf.” Top Line also enjoyed a banner day Wednesday, leading all consignors with $4.06 million generated from nine head sold. Top Line also sold Hip 343, a colt by Charlatan, for $660,000. “The Good Magic filly, everyone on the sales grounds loved her,” said Top Line's Jimbo Gladwell. “She's just been a queen. She showed really well down there. We had high hopes, you never know if they're going to go for a million, but we were very happy with the price.”–CBoss 'The Plan is Sayonara:' Independence Hall Colt Stars in Woods Farewell Tour Longtime Ocala horseman Eddie Woods, who expects to present his final consignment in April, celebrated yet another seven-figure juvenile when a colt from the first crop of Independence Hall (hip 404) was purchased for $1 million by Muir Hut during Wednesday's second session of the OBS March sale. The bay colt is out stakes-placed Orecchiette (Harlan's Holiday) and worked a furlong last week in :9 4/5. He was purchased for $165,000 at last summer's Fasig-Tipton July sale. “I sold his mother to Eclipse,” Woods said. “She did ok. And I sold a couple out of the second dam for good money. That's what he looked like, all of those strong horses in the second dam. And I just said, 'I am buying him.'” Hip 404 | OBS Photo Woods, who has been based in Ocala for nearly two decades, said his 240-acre training center is under contract, but added, “they are never sold until you get the check. It's going to go through some stuff with the county and you never know how that's going to go.” Asked what his plan after April will be, Woods said, “The plan is sayonara. I am going to be done. April will be my last sale. After that we will do a bit of consulting, maybe help some people buy some horses. We are going to travel a lot. I want to do a lot of the Southern Hemisphere stuff that we can't do. I don't want to do it in their winter, I want to do it in our winter.” Reflecting on the changes in the juvenile market that he helped pioneer in Central Florida, Woods said, “This sales business is getting harder and harder because if you don't nail everything, you don't get rewarded. There was a time you could sell horses in the back ring, there is no one buying horses in the back ring right now. Nobody. So you've got to spend more and more to get the horse that you want. That horse right there [hip 404] was the golden touch, but when you get it wrong, like the one I sold today for $75,000, we gave $250,000 for him. He came up with some issues, but he's a beautiful-looking horse.” Plans for the farm have yet to be finalized, according to Woods. “I am not quite sure. It could stay as a training center or it could go on and be developed into, as the guy said, Ralph Lauren barns with even bigger houses,” Woods said. “That's the way this town is going with WEC [World Equestrian Center] and everything like that. Everywhere you drive around, there is a really nice show ring.” Asked what he will miss most about the sales scene, Woods had a quick answer and a big smile. “Selling a million-dollar horse,” he said. Of his latest seven-figure juvenile, Woods said, “The best thing about him is the way he looks and his video is awesome.” The colt is one of two by multiple graded winner Independence Hall (Constitution) that Woods will send through the ring this year. “They are good looking and they are really good minded,” he said of the pair. “And they act like they are quick.” After selling Wednesday, hip 404 will head to the West Coast barn of trainer Mark Glatt. “He had an excellent breeze and the horse really presented himself back at the barn well,” Glatt said. “He is just a really athletic horse.” Asked about buying a colt by a first-crop sire, Glatt admitted, “It makes me really nervous because you never know which way they are going to go, but we looked up [Independence Hall]'s numbers and he ran very, very fast. He was consistently fast in all of his races. At these 2-year-old sales, you are here to buy the best athlete you possibly can. And we just thought he was an athlete. Ultimately purchased for Flanagan Racing for $725,000, the colt, later named Chancer McPatrick, won his first three starts under the guidance of Chad Brown, including the GI Champagne and GI Hopeful Stakes. Fast forward to Wednesday's second OBS March session, the duo was back in action, securing Hip 325, a colt by Midshipman, for Sean Flanagan, this time extending to $650,000. Consigned by Caliente Thoroughbreds, the chestnut worked a session-topping quarter mile in :20 2/5 last Friday. “We come here primarily for performance-based horses and his performance was arguably as good or better than anybody in the sale for us personally,” said Sallusto. “We thought he'd be a great horse that would be very effective this summer. As easily as he performed in his breeze, we thought he had a chance to carry his speed quite a way. We don't feel he's just one-dimensional.” The Mar. 26 foal Out of Line of David's is out of Meetmeonline, a half-sister to GSW and sire Bucchero. This is also the family of MGISW World of Trouble. “We try and buy those bigger pedigreed horses that are athletic as yearlings, and we would still like to buy the pedigrees here that also have the performance, but the performance is mainly come to the 2-year-old sales for. If you can get all of that, it usually costs a bit more,” Sallusto explained. Chancer McPatrick ultimately lost out to GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Citizen Bull for a divisional title, and recently made his 2025 debut, finishing runner-up in the GIII Tampa Bay Derby last weekend. It's a little bit of a jigsaw puzzle putting it all together [from year-to-year]. He's was an absolutely smashing -looking horse and mentally, he's as good a horse as I have ever been around. So he has given us the right feel.”–CBoss Cox Extends to $660K for Charlatan Colt Midway through Wednesday's session, trainer Brad Cox stepped in to secure Hip 343, a colt by freshman sire Charlatan, for $660,000. Signing on behalf of Prime Bloodstock, Cox was impressed by the Top Line Sales-consigned colt. “He's just a powerhouse,” said Cox. “He's a very good-looking colt. I looked at him walk down the row for me a couple times and from what I could tell he has a pretty good mind. We're excited about marching forward with him.” During last week's breeze show, the son of stakes-winner Miss Interpret (Street Sense) covered an eighth in :10 flat. This represents the family of MGISW Paulassilverlining. “He's a beautiful colt, obviously had a very fast work and he has some pedigree that suggests he'll stretch out,” explained Cox. “And we're hopeful he can in time.” Cox added, “He obviously comes from a very good consignor that we've had luck with in the past with the likes of [GISW] Saudi Crown (Always Dreaming) and [GSW] Key of Life (Mo Town), we hope we can continue with this horse.” Top Line's Torie Gladwell said, “[The price] was higher than we thought. There were the right people on him but you never know when you get a horse like that who is going end up with them.” In regard to Hill 'n' Dale's freshman stallion, Gladwell added, “He's just a man. We have quite a few Charlatans on the farm and he stacks up right there with the best of them. He just does everything right. He's so cool and laid back. Great horse, they're going to love him in the barn.”--CBoss 'The Racing Part is Fun:' Lee Ackerley Gets Back in the Game Lee Ackerley and his brother Bob steadily built up a large racing stable and broodmare band over a couple of decades before scaling back some 20 years ago, but Lee got back in the game in a big way Tuesday in Ocala, buying four juveniles for $1.175 million during the first session of the OBS March sale. “We got in in the early '90s. We started claiming horses,” Ackerley said. “Then we hooked up with Steve Asmussen. He got some horses for us. We ran in Texas. We met Todd Pletcher and he picked out Jersey Girl for us. Steve picked out Valid Expectations. We got up to about 150 horses by the early 2000s. Then we started cutting back. We just have a few mares left.” The Ackerley brothers helped both trainers kick off Hall of Fame careers. Jersey Girl (Belong to Me), a $220,000 purchase at the 1997 Fasig-Tipton Florida sale, went on to become Pletcher's first Grade I winner when she won the GI Test Stakes, GI Acorn Stakes and GI Mother Goose Stakes in 1998. Valid Expectations, acquired for $225,000 at the 1995 OBS March sale, was a two-time graded winner for Asmussen the following year. “The whole fun of it was buying 2-year-olds,” Ackerley said. “That was the most fun. Jersey Girl was a 2-year-old, Valid Expectations was a 2-year-old. Business has done well over the past decade and I wanted to get back in it. That's the whole story.” When Ackerley, who is co-founder and director of the Texas-based electronic component distributor Smith, decided to get back in the 2-year-old game, he called on those familiar names. And he let them do their thing. “I have long since learned, these guys are great,” Ackerley said of the two trainers. “They are both Hall of Fame trainers. I trust them implicitly to pick out horses and to train them, do the whole thing. I just give them an amount. I told them I was looking for runners.” During Tuesday's session of the March sale, Ackerley purchased a daughter of Vekoma (hip 65) for $425,000; a filly by Charlatan (hip 40) for $400,000; a colt by Violence (hip 208) for $200,000; and a colt by Charlatan (hip 50) for $150,000. During Wednesday's session, Ackerley added a colt by Beau Liam (hip 457) for $300,000. “Great,” Ackerley said when asked what he thought of the quartet. “I watched the workouts. They looked great. But the main thing that matters is that Todd and Steve liked them. And if they like them, I like them.” Ackerley expects to continue shopping throughout the juvenile sales this spring. “I'd like a fun stable, 10 to 15 horses,” he said. “In the past we raced them, we bred them, we did all of it. This time, I am just looking to run them. No breeding. I want to race them and that is absolutely the fun part of the game. I've been through all of the other stuff. It's not for me. He just had that look. He was the total package of a horse who looked like he was going to be fast.” Scanlon admitted he had hoped to get the yearling for slightly less than he ended up paying. “I actually thought because he was immature, I might be able to get him for a little less. So I was thinking maybe we can get this horse for $50,000 or $60,000 or $75,000, but there were other pinhookers on him and we ended up giving $90,000. We were probably getting near the end of our budget.” The colt, who is out of Sister Marette (Cuvee) is a half to stakes-placed Taoiseach (Dublin). He worked a furlong last week in :9 4/5. “He turned out even better than we thought,” Scanlon said. “He always looked fast. But he just grew up. He was one of my favorite horses to be around. He was just so classy. He never had a bad day.” The colt was helped in the ring Wednesday by the recent exploits of his sire Upstart. “At the time, Upstart was doing ok,” Scanlon said. “But since then, he's had some really good horses. And I think we've seen a few of them here bring $300,000s. So I think Upstart is having a bit of a surge right now, too.” Of Wednesday's result, Scanlon said, “I came in here thinking, we gave $90,000, if we get $250,000 that's a great day's work. Then I was getting a little excited. I thought I might get $300,000. I didn't really count on $500,000.
