Abscond (f, 2, Blame–Solitary Life, by Grand Slam), with Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard, had to do it the hard way, but got the job done nonetheless in Sunday’s GI Natalma S., a Breeders’ Cup ‘ Win and You’re In’ event for the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita. Battling throughout with Walk in Marrakesh (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), the 9-1 chance proved gamest late, getting her nose down in front of her rival at the wire. 3-5 choice Fair Maiden (Street Boss) appeared poised for victory, but drifted out in the late stages and had to settle for third. Final time for the one-mile test was :1:36.51. Lifetime Record: 3-2-1-0, $200,000. O-Apogee Bloodstock & Mike Anderson Racing LLC. B-Michael Niall (KY); T-Eddie Kenneally. Juddmonte’s Cardamon (2, Pioneerof the Nile–Soothing Touch, by Touch Gold) came from just off the pace for a professional score at Churchill Downs Sunday. Settled in a stalking position behind initial fractions of :22.02 and :45.71, the 7-5 favorite spurted to the front turning for home, opened up in the stretch and was a comfortable 1 1/2-length winner over Getridofwhatailesu (Ghostzapper) at the wire. Final time for the seven furlong test was 1:23.19. The homebred is a half-sister to multiple Grade I winner and millionaire Emollient (Empire Maker) and Hofburg (Tapit), a stakes winner and Grade I placed. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $57,000. Spendthrift Farm’s star sire Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday–Leslie’s Lady, by Tricky Creek) will stand for $175,000 S&N with a full book in 2020, Spendthrift announced Sunday. That’s an increase of $25,000 from the $150,000 he stood for in 2019. “I don’t know if we’ve seen anything quite like Into Mischief, it’s truly remarkable the things he’s doing,” said Ned Toffey, general manager at Spendthrift. “Aside from amounting results on the track and in the sales ring, he’s the consummate professional and loves his job. This year, over 96% of his mares checked in foal. We think Into Mischief is making a positive impact on the breed that will be felt for years to come, particularly with the heart and durability that are signatures of his offspring.” Spendthrift said it plans to announce fees for the rest of its 2020 roster in the near future. Decorated Invader (2, ,c, Declaration of War–Gamely Girl, by Arch) came from off the pace to prevail by 1 3/4 lengths over 99-1 longshot Cadet Connelly (Grey Swallow {Ire}) in Woodbine’s GI Summer S., a Breeders’ Cup ‘Win and You’re In’ event for the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita in November. Trained by Christophe Clement, the colt was coming into this race off of an impressive maiden tally at Saratoga Aug. 10. Final time for the eight-furlong test was 1:36.34. Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), winner of the G1 Investec Derby in June, could be seen at the Breeders’ Cup next following his fine effort to be third in the G1 QIPCO Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown on Saturday. The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt chased stablemate Sovereign (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) home in the G1 Duby Duty Free Derby at The Curragh on June 29. He was down the field in the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot won by Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), but bounced back with an excellent run at Leopardstown on Saturday, a race which O’Brien dominated with Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) winning and Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) finishing a head in front of Anthony Van Dyck. O’Brien said, “We were delighted with him. We knew that Ascot was a non event with the ground and we knew we could put a line through that run. It was great to see him come back that way. It was his first run back after a break so we look forward to him the next day. “We had it in our head that he would go to the [GI] Breeders’ Cup Turf. He’s a lovely moving, good ground horse. Obviously he’s in the [G1 Qatar Prix de l’] Arc [de Triomphe at ParisLongchamp on Oct. 6], but he could go straight there. The lads said they might keep him in training next year, which would be exciting for us.” The post Anthony Van Dyck Possible for Breeders’ Cup appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Group 1 winner Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy-Dane Street, by Street Cry {Ire}), who ran last of seven in the G1 Matron S. at Leopardstown on Saturday, sustained a recurrence of an earlier muscle injury during the running and has been retired per trainer John Oxx, Racing Post reported on Sunday. The Three Chimneys Farm and Airlie Stud-bred suffered the original injury in the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas in May. “Unfortunately Skitter Scatter has been retired and will be going to her owners, Anthony and Sonia Rogers [at Airlie Stud],” Oxx revealed at The Curragh on Sunday. “It took plenty of time to get her back on track after the injury she picked up at Newmarket. We were happy with her run in the Fairy Bridge S. at Tipperary last month when she finished second, but she wasn’t right when she came in after the Matron and it is the same problem she had after the Guineas. “It’s a pity as she showed up that she still had all ability and enthusiasm. As a Group 1 winner who also won at Group 2 and Group 3 level, she had a good career but it could have been better but for injury. She had a very good pedigree and should do well as a broodmare.” Highweighted at two in Ireland, the bay rattled off victories in 2018’s G3 Silver Flash S., G2 Debutante S. and the G1 Moyglare Stud S. in consecutive starts for Patrick Prendergast. Transferred to John Oxx when Prendergast opted to join forces with that luminary earlier this year, the Kentucky-bred ran second in the G3 Coolmore Stud Fairy Bridge S. from three starts this term and retires with a mark of 10-4-2-2 and $400,341. A half-sister to GIII Durante S. runner-up Data Dependent (More Than Ready), Skitter Scatter is a granddaughter of GSP Daneleta (Ire) (Danehill), who is also the dam of G1 Darley Dewhurst S. victor and sire Intense Focus (Giant’s Causeway). The sole 3-year-old in the line-up for Sunday’s G1 Comer Group Irish St Leger at The Curragh, Moyglare Stud’s Search For a Song (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) carted Chris Hayes throughout and led her rivals a merry dance for an emotive success. Anchored near the back early, the 10-1 shot refused to settle out wide and so her rider allowed her to move past the dawdling leaders and to the head of affairs at halfway. Clear in the straight, the homebred kept finding to stay out of reach and had 2 1/4 lengths to spare over Kew Gardens (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) at the line, with 1 1/2 lengths back to Southern France (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in third. 1–SEARCH FOR A SONG (IRE), 123, f, 3, Galileo (Ire)–Polished Gem (Ire) (Broodmare of the Year-Ire), by Danehill. 1ST GROUP WIN; 1ST GROUP 1 WIN. ParisLongchamp’s G2 Qatar Prix Niel has sometimes created difficulties for the headline acts and that was the case again on Sunday as Peter Brant’s Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) needed a large slice of luck to get the job done. Trapped on the inner and desperately needing room in the straight, the June 2 G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero got it in time inside the final 100 metres to register a 1 1/4-length success from Mutamakina (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), with a short neck back to Mohawk (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in third. “The plan was for the rail to open up, but he broke slowly and had nowhere to go,” trainer Jean-Claude Rouget explained. “In the end, it may well have been a blessing in disguise as he didn’t have a hard race. He’ll go to the Arc now a fresh horse who will improve.” Sunday, ParisLongchamp, France QATAR PRIX NIEL-G2, €130,000, ParisLongchamp, 9-15, 3yo, c/f, 12fT, 2:27.46, gd. 1–SOTTSASS (FR), 128, c, 3, by Siyouni (Fr) 1st Dam: Starlet’s Sister (Ire), by Galileo (Ire) 2nd Dam: Premiere Creation (Fr), by Green Tune 3rd Dam: Allwaki, by Miswaki (€340,000 Ylg ’17 ARAUG). Godolphin’s G2 Vintage S. winner Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) put all doubt about whether he will be crowned champion 2-year-old aside with a brilliant performance in Sunday’s G1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National S. at The Curragh. Settled two lengths off the early pace by William Buick, the 1-3 favourite went past the G2 Coventry S. winner Arizona (Ire) (No Nay Never) as if he was standing still approaching two out before turning into an equine maserati. Stretching away from him and the G3 Tyros S. and G2 Futurity S. scorer Armory (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in memorable style, he had nine lengths to spare at the line over him, with Arizona a neck away in third. “He’s the best horse I’ve had as a 2-year-old, no doubt about it, and he’s exciting,” Charlie Appleby said. “I see no reason why he wouldn’t go for the Dewhurst, as he’s just had a piece of work there.” 1–PINATUBO (IRE), 129, c, 2, by Shamardal 1st Dam: Lava Flow (Ire) (SW-Fr), by Dalakhani (Ire) 2nd Dam: Mount Elbrus (GB), by Barathea (Ire) 3rd Dam: El Jazirah (GB), by Kris (GB) 1ST GROUP 1 WIN. Ballydoyle’s stellar Irish Champions weekend continued apace on Sunday as the G3 Silver Flash S. scorer Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) prevailed in The Curragh’s G1 Moyglare Stud S. Sent off at 6-1 after a disappointing fifth in the G2 Debutante S. over this course and distance Aug. 23, the chestnut enjoyed a smooth run throughout under Ryan Moore just off the pace and when sent to the front a furlong from home stayed on strongly to deny the 13-8 favourite Daahyeh (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) by 3/4 of a length, with the same margin back to fellow Ballydoyle trainee So Wonderful (War Front) in third. The moment her rivals opted to allow Star Catcher (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) her own way in front at the start of Sunday’s G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille at ParisLongchamp, the game was almost as good as up for the rest and Frankie barely had to sweat to register a personal 16th top-level win of the season. Always happy on the lead as she had been when taking the G1 Irish Oaks at The Curragh July 20, Anthony Oppenheimer’s homebred kicked in the straight and had 3/4 of a length to spare over Musis Amica (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}), with a length back to another Fabre-trained 4-year-old in Ligne d’Or (GB) (Dansili {GB}) in third. TDN Rising Star Fairyland (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) had been at Haydock last Saturday for the G1 Sprint Cup and while things failed to happen for her there, she had her day in Sunday’s G1 Derrinstown Stud Flying Five at The Curragh. Sent off at 12-1, last year’s G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine was never far from the solid early pace and when committed by Ryan Moore took a slim advantage with a furlong remaining. Joined by stablemate and fellow TDN Rising Star So Perfect (Scat Daddy) there, Evie Stockwell’s colour-bearer toughed it out for a short-head success, with 1 1/2 lengths back to Invincible Army (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in third. 1–FAIRYLAND (IRE), 126, f, 3, by Kodiac (GB) 1st Dam: Queenofthefairies (GB), by Pivotal (GB) 2nd Dam: Land of Dreams (GB), by Cadeaux Genereux (GB) 3rd Dam: Sahara Star (GB), by Green Desert (925,000gns Ylg ’17 TATOCT).
