Race 1 10 The Player: Stood up and delivered a rather telling blow when first up for the Dunn stable. That was in the maiden grade though, there’s a couple of hardy souls here. Still the one to beat. 11 Sugar Cane: Did plenty of work early to find the front last week and it only told very late. Can fly the tape and get handy and give them all something to shake again. 2 Momentous: No worry about the manners, will just trot, trot and then trot some more. No superstar, but good enough to get in on the action should others fail. 8 Unique Marshall: Probably just a little under the usual standards lately, but another good chance to get things back on track tonight in a winnable race. Selections: 10-11-2-8 Race 2 2 A Delightful Act: Into the Mitch Kerr barn and looked smart winning a workout from the front recently Everything points towards something good here. 4 Louis Litt: Really drove at the line last time out to go down narrowly. Held in pretty high regard and they might take the kid gloves off tonight and have a serious crack. 1 Carita: Has been a little unlucky in the last two and really attacked the line last week. This draw should work out just perfectly. Has to be a good place chance at least. 7 Terror The Christian: Smart up and coming pacer on debut from a good stable here. Trial and workout form is very good. Can win with the right amount of luck. Selections: 2-4-1-7 Race 3 4 Rocknroll King: Showed some good mental fortitude to a) stay in the right gait and b) hold on to get the win last time. Loving beach life and can win again. 1 Minstrel: Showed a bit of class to win in a very good maiden field last time, albeit from a good trip. Looks set for one of those again. Can win again too. 2 Yorkshire: They climbed out of trees to get on when he lined up on debut and they got paid nicely. Just how good he is, who knows? We’ll find out tonight. 8 Team Kiwi: Beat a good line up last time out at Rangiora and is a little underrated to be honest. Should get home nicely here tonight. Selections: 4-1-2-8 Race 4 7 Portalegre: Is only going to be better for the first up run from the new stable. Classy customer who will get better and better as the season goes on. Go again. 4 Voodoo Priestess: Smart customer back from a let up here. Took on some red hot fields last campaign and did really well – leading junior in the bike too. 2 Rake: Came from nowhere and nearly pulled off the victory last time out. In great fettle and seems to be getting better and better. Can get a slice here tonight too. 14 Matt Damon: Stood up and delivered in fine style at Rangiora last time out. Has a future and might be able to swoop on this field late in the race. Selections: 7-4-2-14 Race 5 2 Prodigal Guinness: Plenty to like about the debut effort behind a pretty smart one last week. There was some strong merit in that run. Can go one better here. 13 Emmersyn Lee: Came home from an impossible situation with great gusto on debut. A little bit more luck in the running here and anything is possible. 8 Krystal Delight: First starter from the Hope team with a bit of workout and trial form on the board. Giving massive respect in her direction on debut. 1 Scorcha: Nigel McGrath and Blair Orange combining with a fresh up runner, you’d be mad to leave it out. That trial win at Rangiora was very good too. Selections: 2-13-8-1 Race 6 8 Mikey Maguire: Big and dour pacer who doesn’t mind a bit of a scrap. Freshened up for this and will enjoy the small field. Can win with the right kind of run. 7 Doitson: Really hit his straps in recent months and was very good last time out following that emphatic win. Go again, he’s a good each way chance. 3 Go Davey: Freshened up for this and doesn’t race badly in that state. Should get on the speed and keep giving, the whole way to the line. Could win it too. 5 Copperhead Rose: Here for his fourth run in a week (two races, one workout and one trial) so should be fit. Tough as old boots but a couple here maybe too fast. Selections: 8-7-3-5 Race 7 5 A G’s White Socks: Smart pacer with big aspirations for this season, small field might make him vulnerable as it could become a tactical affair. Still the leading contender. 1 Classie Brigade: First up from a wee freshen up and was pretty smart winning a recent trial. On the markers and doing no extra work, game on. 6 Hail Christian: Has been smashing out some impressive sectionals in workouts and trials and looks ready for a big resumption tonight. 3 Stick Man: Dealt them a lesson at Gore on Sunday, this is a big step up. But could lead the charge behind the leading three. Selections: 5-1-6-3 Race 8 1 Friend: In great form and comes up with the ace draw here. Will be on the speed, out of trouble and looking to keep them all honest. Should go close to winning. 5 Corona: Nice run last time out from a tricky draw. Right man in the bike to get things happening here and would be no surprise to see a big effort. 4 B Mac C: Speed merchant when saved for that one run at them so ducking for cover here and then looking to romp home late. Game on. 2 Motoring Major: Got the stitch at the 400m last week, but that was in a better field than this. Can be competitive in this line up. Selections: 1-5-4-2 Race 9 2 Diana Harbour: Stoff up and delivered something quite special last time out. Really going from strength to strength. If she trots away early, she’s going to be hard to beat. 1 Girls Let Loose: Big win fresh up at Oamaru. One draw is a bit of a concern, but safely through that and it’s game on again here. 12 Madeleine Stowe: Got it done in easy fashion last week, low-flying and trotting like a star. Can win again off the back mark. 5 The Bloss: In great form and putting herself in the race and keeping them honest. Deserves a winning turn and with the right amount of luck could get there tonight. Selections: 2-1-12-5 Race 10 8 All Nuts N Bolts: The old boy is flying again and was oh so brave last time out behind a smart one. This is easier and really does look his race to lose. 7 Jungle Gem: Better for the fresh up run and should go on with it now. Not a deep field so expecting a pretty big performance here tonight. 6 Beau Vitsa: Hitting the line nicely last time out and third up tonight should be ready to fire on all cylinders. Can get a big slice of the action here. 10 Awesome Speed: Did it tough last time out, but that was in a tougher field too. Expecting this to be a bit more to the liking and or thing to turn around. Selections: 8-7-6-10 BEST: 1 Friend (Race 8) NEXT: 2 A Delightful Act (Race 2) VALUE: 8 Mikey Maguire (Race 6) [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section] The post The Shark – Best at Addington on Friday 30 August 2019 appeared first on BOAY Racing News. Race 1: 10 Kimkar Dash: Manners played a role again last time out but there has been plenty in two clean rounds to suggest a winning turn here tonight is likely with them. 3 Duchess Of Cambridge: Probably ran above expectations last time out when third fresh up. Was brave to the line and might be a sneaky chance off the front here. 9 Grenado: This looks a whole lot easier than some of the recent battles that have been endured. Can give them all plenty to think about for sure. 8 Keystone Cavalier: Out of maidens, but did it impressively las time out. This isn’t a huge step up, so should be competitive again. Selections: 10-3-9-8 Race 2: 6 Hughie Junior: Hasn’t shirked the challenge in strong fields up the road in Auckland. Might really put it to this lot tonight and can emerge on top. 5 Ocean Beach: Another placing for the efforts last time out in a decent field. Handy draw again so must be considered an each way prospect. 9 Dragon Tattoo: Bit of trial form about and the stable has them ready first up. Can snag onto the back of the right one early and be right in the mix. 1 Creator: Debut run was pretty good considering the draw. Massive swing here and can sneak up on them late and give a bit of cheek. Selections: 6-5-9-1 Race 3: 6 Molly Bones: Stood and dealt them a big blow at Auckland last week. Best is very good and if there’s two in a row of those, we’re winning again. 5 Eyre I Go: Escapes Auckland and sticks to the mobile, that can get things back on track for sure. Bound to give a good sight. 8 Sex On Fire: Was pretty handy late in the piece last week at Auckland to finish fourth in a good field. Wide draw, but a good chance all the same. 1 Harry H: Showed his true class last time out with a bold second and gets a good draw to work from here. Might give them all a bit of a fright. Selections: 6-5-8-1 Race 4: 1 Hey Good Lookin: Hasn’t been far away from the action recently and gets the right kind of draw in the right kind of field to warrant serious consideration. 4 Sabreur: Always carries plenty of support and is escaping Auckland for this. Well drawn and stable going well, there’s a few ticks in the column. 6 Suidelike Major: Another with handy enough form up the road. No star, but this is an even field and no surprise to see a big performance. 3 Signseeldeliver: Carried a heap of support last week but failed horribly. Prior two runs were very good so prepared to allow that one mistake on the formline. Race 5 3 Flying Finn: Thought the run in a pretty red hot field at Auckland last week was excellent. This is far easier and there’s plenty to like about tonight’s chances. 7 Texas Tiger: Stunning win last time out, really impressive. Repeat of that goes close tonight – but will have to be that little bit better again. 9 Matai Minky: Dangerous runner up from Canterbury and into the Dickson barn, we know what’s happened to horses like that recently. Game on. 1 Peter Forsberg: Lovely run fresh up and sure to have taken some improvement from it. Best form would stack up here, especially from the draw. Selections: 3-7-9-1 Race 6 5 Live Reactor: Prepared to put the last start effort down to the draw. Meets a very even looking line up tonight, with plenty of chances. He being one of the best. 8 Two Fiftyeight: Looks a little unlucky here last time out and should be able to stand up to this field. Just needs that little element of luck. 4 Spare Change: Can’t fault the form line, it’s consistently good. This isn’t an overly strong field either so should get another slice of the pie tonight. 3 Runcle: Did it nicely last time out and maybe things are turning for him. No surprise to see another big effort here tonight again. . Selections: 5-8-4-3 Race 7 3 Flying Steps: Very good effort for third in a strong field at Auckland last time out. Will get right in on the action here today and give them plenty to chase. 12 Sir Tiger: Seems to thrive at Cambridge and although off the second line here will be out to keep the form going. Can certainly give them all a fright. 9 Ferrit’s Sister: Escapes some strong Auckland company for this and won’t mind it either. Only problem is the draw. Needs that little bit of luck. 2 Delightful Deal: Near enough efforts recently and just needs that element of luck to improve those results that little bit more. Selections: 3-12-9-2 Race 8 9 Invictus: Stood up and delivered something quite impressive at Auckland last time out. Big win. Repeat that and repeat the result here tonight too. 7 Heard The Whisper: Enigmatic trotter who could roll these in the right mood but can be a bit in or out at times. Each way and cross everything. 8 Capelli: The form on the board is excellent and it won’t take much of a chance from the recent form to grab another win here tonight. 11 As Free As Air: Trotted and did it right last time and won. Generally it’s just as simple as that. Too good to leave out of tonight’s assignment. Selections: 9-7-8-11 Race 9 1 Jingles Bromac: Another bold effort last time to finish second. Comes up with the inside draw tonight and might just try and make the race his own. 4 Allonblack: Continually producing strong performances and was very good last week off a tricky draw. Looking for another big effort tonight. 11 Red Terror: Still not ready to drop him. This is his kind of races and although the patience is wearing thin, no surprise to see a big effort tonight. 8 American Me: Probably the class customer of the field, but fresh up and facing a wide draw so a couple of things against. [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Article Test” _builder_version=”3.22.4″] Southland superstar to race next week The wait is almost over for the many, many fans of unbeaten Southland pacer U May Cullect. He’ll return to the races at Winton next Sunday, contesting a 2400-metre handicap off 50 metres. Co-trainer Kirstin Barclay confirmed the plans on Thursday as she and Tank Ellis ramp up proceedings for a tilt at November’s New Zealand Trotting Cup. “That’s the plan (to go to Winton) and we’ll be treating it like a workout. “We can’t be tripping up to Canterbury every other week so we just have to cop racing him off a big handicap.” “He had a private workout at Winton on Tuesday and we were really happy with him. “The main thing at the moment is to get the standing start practice in to him. “His training on the beach has been bang on and we are very happy with his fitness.” Safely through next week, the $30,000 Hannon Memorial at Oamaru on September 22 is the first goal of the Spring. “That will be his first time from a standing start with the rest of the field so it will be a big test for him.” U May Cullect was third favourite for the New Zealand Trotting Cup before nominations closed on Wednesday and bookies took the market down. Setback for Cup-nominated pacer A foot abscess has delayed the racetrack return of exciting Canterbury prospect, Ive Already Told You. Trainer Stephen Boyd confirmed on Thursday that a foot complaint had seen the four-year-old withdrawn from the nominations for Friday night’s Maurice Holmes Vase. “He’s got a foot abscess and it’s half-pie looking like a quarter crack,” he said. “We’re just going to see how it heals up over the next week before making any decisions.” Boyd was so elated by the work of the son of Prodigal Seelster, that he was prepared to throw him in the deep end against the country’s best pacers this spring, and that included the New Zealand Cup. “He was working very good and he ran a half in 54 at the trials last week. “I’m a bit gutted because we were all set-up to have a crack at the Maurice Holmes Vase this week. “But I’m feeling a lot better about things today than I did on Tuesday.” A week on Boyd’s water walker awaits Ive Already Told You while his trainer waits for the abscess to burst out. From there he will decide if a spring campaign is viable or not. Purdon sells promising pacer One of the north’s more progressive types from last season has been sold to American interests. Benson Boys will fly out of Auckland on Friday destined for New York according to his trainer, Barry Purdon. Purdon and wife, Katrina, bred Benson Boys and named the son of Art Major after their neighbours’ children. Racing exclusively as a four-year-old in New Zealand, Benson Boys won five races and over $60,000 and contested both the Taylor Mile and Harness Jewels. Others on the American consignment include impressive last start Oamaru winner, Montefalco, and low-grade northern pacers, Sea Change and Two Fiftyeight and four-win Auckland trotter, All American. Good evening, It’s been just sixty days since the establishment of the Racing Industry Transition Agency (RITA) and a timely opportunity to update you on progress against the Reform Programme the Board are advancing on behalf of the Minister for Racing. Our strategic focus is set out very clearly in the letter of expectation from the Minister for Racing – we must work to secure the long-term success of the New Zealand racing industry. We must reform the industry into a more sustainable structure, and support them as it goes through this change. You will know that there are 17 recommendations from the Review of the New Zealand Racing Industry by John Messara that we are working through. Many of these need policy, legislation and comprehensive regulations for the proposed changes to take effect. Much of this work is complex and requires significant focus from RITA Board and management, as well as the Department of Internal Affairs. As we come into the important period of Spring racing we are encouraged by the progress made to give effect to this ambition. Bill One The first Racing Reform Bill came into effect on July 1 and addresses the industry’s need for additional revenue. This included the totalisator (betting) duty paid to the Crown being phased out and the introduction of two new charges on overseas betting operators (offshore charges) to help ensure they contribute to the New Zealand racing and sports codes from which they benefit. The money available as a consequence of the reduction in Betting Duty is being held by RITA while the final details of its distribution between Harm Minimisation Initiatives, and the Racing Codes and Sports NZ is finalised. From mid 2021, we would expect the returns will be in excess of $14m, with approximately $4m available this year. The distribution amounts need to be set by a specific regulation and we will update the industry prior to Christmas on the outcome. The Offshore Charges will be able to be set and collected following the implementation of regulations. It is expected that this process will be completed and collection commenced from the beginning of the 2020 calendar year. While overseas betting operators will be required to pay product fees in due course, a number of these have already committed to voluntary charges, most recently Sportsbet. This is in addition to the arrangement secured with Betfair earlier this year, and discussions with other operators in the Australian market are ongoing. The first Bill also permits RITA to offer betting on a wider range of sports where an agreement is reached with Sport NZ. We are hopeful of new sports being made available to TAB customers before the end of the year. Bill Two Work is now well advanced on preparing the second Bill which we anticipate being introduced into Parliament at the end of this year. This will include provisions designed to give effect to the establishment of TAB NZ in order to maximise revenue and profit for racing and to the transfer to the individual Codes of a range of racing and industry responsibilities previously undertaken by RITA. We have sought feedback from the Codes on this with a view to policy decisions being taken for inclusion in the draft policy papers for the Bill. Provisions to facilitate discussion between Codes and Clubs in relation to the future of New Zealand’s racing venues, as part of the Future Venue Plan work started last year, are expected to be included in the new Bill. The Messara recommendations in relation to the racing Integrity bodies and animal welfare have been advanced in an independent review undertaken by Malcolm Burgess. His Report has been circulated for consultation with the various views currently being analysed, including from the JCA and RIU who presented to the Board at our last meeting. The decisions on a new Governance structure for integrity bodies will likely be made by the Board at our next meeting on September 25, and could result in specific legislative considerations in the Bill. Messara also recommended an independent performance and efficiency audit on the NZRB and we expect a final version in mid September. This has been slightly delayed to ensure the scope of the report brief was fully met. Once complete it will be sent to the Minister. In addition, we’ve had an independent report on the Distribution Model under section 16 of the Act developed and which will be discussed with the Codes within the next few weeks with regulations developed next year. Harm Minimisation As the Board work through the various recommendations we remain acutely aware of our responsibility to minimise the harm that gambling can lead to for some people. RITA management has reviewed its work in this area and developed a comprehensive strategy to add further weight to activities already underway. This will include utilising technology, improving communications and building stronger partnerships with the sector. Industry Engagement Over the past few weeks we have met with the Boards of the three Codes to update them on the process and our progress. We will also keep the industry up to speed on our progress where we can. Good progress is being made but to meet the timelines required for the legislative process the momentum must be sustained. We will provide a further RITA operational update in September. Yours sincerely, Dean McKenzie Chair View the full article

Shakespeare winning at Waverley on Thursday. Progressive three-year-old Shakespeare broke maiden ranks for Otaki trainers Johno Benner and Hollie Wynyard on Thursday at Waverley and looks to be a stayer of promise. The son of Poet’s Voice came with a well-timed run under Lisa Allpress to win by a length going away, defeating older rivals. “He is a horse that we have had a lot of time for and it has been frustrating because we haven’t been able to get him to a trip that we know will suit him,” Benner said. Benner was critical of the programme for young stayers in New Zealand. “He is a beautiful individual and has been a very hard horse to place. I had to run him against older horses as a two-year-old just to try and get him up to a trip that he can be competitive at. “It is one of my pet frustrations in New Zealand. We are known for breeding and raising a staying style of horse but we just don’t cater to them. You just wish that there were some more options. “Looking at races like the VRC Derby (Gr.1, 2500m), it is getting harder for New Zealand horses to get to those races unless you get them to Aussie early. “He’s smart. He doesn’t know how good he is and I am not sure what he beat today. He got into a beautiful spot and Lincoln Town put pace into the race and he was diligent late. “The future is bright for him and there are five Derbys in Australasia so that has been our goal.” Out of the stakes-winning Encosta de Lago mare Ulfah, Shakespeare was purchased by Benner and bloodstock agent Phill Cataldo for $60,000 from the draft of Brighthill Farm in Book 1 of the 2018 Karaka yearling sales. Jockey Rosie Myers has taken on the task of getting down to 48.5kg to ride Aalaalune on Saturday. Manawatu jockey Rosie Myers will step into uncharted territory when she teams up with Aalaalune in Saturday’s Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) at Hastings. A natural lightweight, Myers usually walks at 51kg but she is facing a rare task of shedding weight to get to Aalaalune’s 48.5kg for the weight-for-age feature. “I don’t think I’ve ever had to ride that light,” Myers said. “It’s only a couple of kilos I’ve had to lose and it should be sweet. The boys (male jockeys) keep telling me that’s what they have to do for every meeting.” Myers, who has five Group One wins to her name, was only too happy to accept Team Rogerson’s offer to ride the Reliable Man filly, who raced exclusively in stakes company last season, finishing second in the Gr.1 Sistema Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie and a fast-finishing fourth in the Gr.1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Awapuni. “She’s got pretty good form from her two-year-old season but it’s just hard to measure her up in this race,” Myers said. “She hasn’t raced against those proven older horses and the likes of Endless Drama and Melody Belle have been there and done that but she’s getting a lot of weight from them.” Aalaalune carries 10.5kg less than $2.70 favourite Endless Drama, a last-start winner of the Gr.2 Foxbridge Plate (1200m) at Te Rapa and 8.5kg less than six-time Group One winner Melody Belle, who won the Tarzino Trophy last year. “She’s drawn out (barrier 14) but she gets back anyway though, I want to talk to Rogey (co-trainer Graeme Rogerson) before I make any plans on tactics,” Myers said. An $18 shot with TAB bookmakers, Aalaalune is having her first start for Rogerson and his co-trainers Debbie and Bailey Rogerson, having transferred from Matamata trainer Jacob McKay earlier this month. Still a maiden, Aalaalune will be the first three-year-old to contest the first leg of the Hawke’s Bay triple crown series since the John Wheeler-trained The Pooka finished fifth in 2007. The Pooka also contested the other two legs of the triple crown before going on to Group One success in the New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton. Rogerson, then training in partnership with Stephen Autridge, produced Cedar Manor to finish seventh in the race in 2004. Not that any of that matters to Myers, whose focus will be on getting to the 48.5kg on Saturday and enjoying a hearty meal afterwards. “I’m not eating much at the moment. I’m pretty hungry right now,” Myers said. View the full article

Tye Angland has expressed his gratitude to the Kwok family, the owners of champion Hong Kong galloper Beauty Generation, a New Zealand-bred son of Road To Rock, following their $A1 million gift to his family. Angland, who rode horses for the Kwoks in Australia and Hong Kong, became a quadriplegic after suffering spinal injuries in a race fall in Hong Kong in November. The Kwok family’s donation was made at a racing function in Hong Kong on Wednesday, just days out from the start of their new season. The money will be placed into trust funds for Angland’s three children and will be used to fund their education and future life expenses. “The whole family is obviously very grateful with what the Kwok family has put together for us,” Angland said on Sydney’s Sky Sports Radio. “Emotions have been high and low ever since the accident. The racing family has been very supportive of the whole accident and towards my family as well. “It’s definitely made life that little bit easier, that’s for sure.” It has been an emotional week for Angland, who was reunited with one of his favourite horses, Trapeze Artist, at a stallion parade in the Hunter Valley last weekend. Angland rode the horse to three Group One wins and Trapeze Artist appeared to recognise him immediately during a photo shoot, which has been published on twitter. “He’s come up and just bowed his head into my lap and I was able to give him a pat,” Angland said. The former jockey said he had received tremendous support from the racing industry since his accident, particularly from close friends and riders, Tommy Berry and Grant Buckley. He is determined to remain positive and be a role model to others. “I think your mindset is a lot stronger than a set of legs so I’m just going to be the positive person that I am and hopefully help a few people out along the way,” he said. -AAP View the full article

Humidor will attempt to defend his title in the Gr.1 New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday. The New Zealand-bred and owned gelding has been on the sidelines with injury since his third-placing in the Gr.1 Cox Plate (2040m) last October and Ciaron Maher, who trains in partnership with David Eustace, is happy with his progress leading into Saturday’s race. “I am quite happy with the progression he’s made through the prep, he’s got a good base on him,” Maher said. “He had a little blow here on Tuesday morning. He worked well. He’ll improve off the back of the run, but I am happy where he is.” Maher will also line-up Cliff’s Edge in Saturday’s contest and is hoping for a good showing from both horses. “Hopefully he could run second behind Cliff,” Maher said. “That would be ideal.” View the full article

Balcairn trainers John and Karen Parsons will kick-off the three-year-old campaigns for Touchabeel and Sombra Deamor in the Barneswood Farm Stakes Day 19th October (1250m) at Ashburton on Friday and their performances in the race will help dictate their spring paths. Touchabeel had the four starts as a juvenile and finished fourth on debut in the Listed Welcome Stakes (1000m) and while her trainers would have liked her to have developed a little more over winter, they are pleased with her heading into Friday. The daughter of Savabeel finished third in her 850m trial at Rangiora earlier this month and Karen Parsons, who co-bred and co-owns the filly in partnership with Waikato Stud, admits four debutants in the field adds a bit of uncertainty to the mix. “She is working quite well,” she said. “I’m a little bit disappointed she didn’t grow a little bit more while she was out, but she doesn’t know she is little, she thinks she is 10 foot tall. She is the boss of the paddock. “We were quite happy with the trial, but we don’t know how good those other ones are in the race tomorrow. “She will go well because she has trained on and we will get a good line on her there.” All going to plan Touchabeel will follow a stakes path for the rest of the spring, with the Gr.1 Gavelhouse New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) being the ultimate target. “We have tentatively got them booked in, but it all depends on how well she performs,” Parsons said. “We have got the Canterbury Belle (Listed, 1200m) next and then we will see what happens, but the 1000 Guineas is the main goal.” Parsons will also lineup Sombra Deamor in the same race and she is excited about the debut of the close relation to Hong Kong Group One-winning sprinter D B Pin. The daughter of Pins had two trials as a juvenile and Parsons is pleased she has taken a patient approach with the filly. “We had her going at two, she has matured mentally a lot more now. In the head department she was quite a loose unit. “She has just improved a heap with an extra six months.” Another link that Parsons is excited about is the great association she and husband John have had with Waikato Stud’s deceased stallion Pins. “We do have a great record with the Pins’,” she said. “We were going through them just recently and I don’t think we have had a Pins that was a flop. “We have had Megapins and Sharp Prick. The ones that we have had have been good horses to us. “Without a doubt he would be our favourite stallion.” View the full article

The Good Fight will contest the Nathan’s Famous Handicap (2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday. Cambridge trainer Shaune Ritchie is delighted with the way his five-year-old stayer The Good Fight has settled into Sydney life and believes Saturday’s Nathan’s Famous Handicap (2000m) is the perfect race to get the ball rolling across the Tasman. “He is great, he has settled in really well,” Ritchie said. “He didn’t have a sweat mark on him when he got off the flight and he has a really laid back nature. I paid a lot of money for him as a yearling so he has got the attitude that comes with the price tag. “He will have a little gallop on the course proper here at Rosehill on Thursday to have a look at the track and I think we are bringing him for the right race. “It is a rating 78 2000m, we are not trying to bite off more than we can chew, we are in our grade.” Ritchie has secured the services of Hugh Bowman and hopes the star jockey can overcome a tricky gate in barrier 14 and equal top-weight of 59.5kgs, as The Good Fight steps up sharply in trip following a narrow win over 1400m at Te Rapa when resuming. “He is weighted accordingly but we have got a good jockey in Hugh Bowman and it is forecast for a bit of rain and is currently a soft track,” Rithcie said. “We are looking for a soft or heavy track on Saturday, he performs okay on top of the ground but it certainly won’t affect him as much as perhaps one or two others. “The fact that he is such a natural stayer, there is no issue from my point of view going from the 1400m to 2000m. “Rosehill is not an undulating track and it is probably quite a soft 2000m, not like at Randwick where you go up a hill and down a rise. “The barrier draw means we will ride him cold but to be honest he is better ridden back anyway because he has such a powerful finish.” Ritchie, who is in Sydney himself until Sunday, said the engagement of Bowman meant he would get accurate feedback as to where the progressive galloper rates against Sydney opposition. “If Hugh thinks we are going to be outclassed here in Sydney or in Melbourne then we will act accordingly,” Ritchie said. “There is a good benchamrk 78 2400m race for him in two weeks time, if he was to run well without winning then that would be the logical race for him once again at Rosehill. “If he was to win, we would look at something like the Newcastle Gold Cup (Gr.3, 2300m).” Ritchie will also have runners at Hawke’s Bay on Saturday, where in-form galloper Sultan Of Swing steps out in the Reliable Man Trophy (1600m) from barrier three for apprentice Taiki Yanagida. “The barrier is probably irrelevant to him because he has been racing well over a mile by being ridden cold, so he will probably get back and swoop,” Ritchie said. “He has had a bit of time between races. He had a week off after his last run and they cancelled the Open 1500m race at Ellerslie last week, which in hindsight mightn’t of suited him anyway because it would have been on a heavy track.” With a number of the opposition resuming or early in their preparations, Sultan Of Swing should have a base fitness edge. “He has been in work since before Bonecrusher was broken in,” Ritchie quipped. “Gee I love the way he is going. He is working super and a nice older horse like him often holds his form. You wouldn’t want to be leaving him out of your trifecta, that’s for sure.” Ritchie has progressive three-year-old filly Jennifer Eccles as a dual acceptor at Hawke’s Bay, entered in both the Taupo Pak’nsave Fillies (1100m) and the Listed El Roca – Sir Colin Meads Trophy (1200m), where she has drawn barrier 10 and 13 respectively. “I cannot believe we have had two rolls of the dice and missed both times,” Ritchie said. “We have bad barriers in both races. We paid to be there untill 7:30am Saturday and we will use that luxury. “The fields look pretty even to me and either way it doesn’t look like she will be anywhere near the rail. “She has had two wide draws in both her two-year-old runs and had three wide runs because of it or been shuffled wide at her last race on the corner. “She is yet to have a soft run at the races but she is on a path to the 1000 Guineas (Gr.1, 1600m) and we expect her to be hitting the line well.” Ritchie’s other runner on the card is four-year-old gelding All Paid Up, who finished a solid fourth when resuming at Ruakaka. “He is a big, long striding horse and I’m expecting an improved performance second-up from him back on what should be a better surface. “He should run well. He is another that can run on the pace from a disgraceful barrier (13). At least with 1400m you have a good run down the back for Donavan Mansour to find a spot for him.” View the full article
