MGISW Bolt d’Oro (Medaglia d’Oro–Globe Trot, by A.P. Indy), who covered his first mares this year at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky, will shuttle to Spendthrift Australia for the upcoming breeding season. A service fee has been set at $13,750 Inc. GST which will be payable on live foal terms. “Bolt d’Oro will be the highest-profile stallion to shuttle to Spendthrift Australia since we’ve opened our doors, and we believe he’ll be very attractive to our market,” said Garry Cuddy, Spendthrift Australia general manager. “It all starts with his two-year-old form. Bolt d’Oro is widely regarded as one of the best U.S. two-year-olds of the last decade, winning a pair of respected Group Ones in very fast times and dominating fashion. He is by a proven outcross sire in Medaglia d’Oro, who needs little introduction here when it comes to his ability to sire high-class two-year-olds, and he is completely free of Danehill or Danzig blood. Bolt d’Oro established himself as one of the most popular first-season stallions in the U.S. this year, and we very much look forward to being able to show him to our breeders.” Bolt d’Oro captured the 2017 GI Del Mar Futurity S. and GI FrontRunner S. and won the 2018 GII San Felipe S. via DQ. He retired with four wins from eight starts and earnings of $1,016,000. ‘TDN Rising Star‘ MIA MISCHIEF (f, 4, Into Mischief–Greer Lynn, by Speightstown), winner of the track-and-trip GII Eight Belles S. here on this weekend and a neck second in the 2018 GI Test S., kicked the Derby Day graded stakes action off with an 11-1 start. The last-out Carousel S. runner-up chased a pace of :22.70 and :45.02 provided by Amy’s Challenge (Artie Schiller), pounced on that foe heading for home and kept finding to prevail by two lengths over favored Marley’s Freedom (Blame) in 1:21.78. Amy’s Challenge hung on for third. Sales history: $135,000 yrl ’16 KEESEP; $300,000 2yo ’17 FTFMAR. Lifetime Record: 14-6-6-0. Owned in partnership by Derrick Smith, Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier and Flaxman Stables, Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) took full advantage of a crucial pace bias to bring up a remarkable 10th success in Newmarket’s G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas on Saturday. Also bringing about a third consecutive Guineas for his stable for the first time since the 1830s, the G1 Futurity Trophy winner was blessed as a 19-runner Classic became effectively a three-runner affair passing halfway courtesy of the tempo set on the rail by Silvestre de Sousa on Shine So Bright (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Passing the two-furlong pole, it was clear that the trio racing towards the stand’s side had it between them and as Donnacha O’Brien sent the 11-2 second favourite past the leader soon after he had only the Hannon runner King of Change (GB) (Farhh {GB}) to concern him. Forging clear up the rising ground, Magna Grecia had 2 1/2 lengths to spare over that 66-1 shot, with the group racing up the middle led ultimately by Skardu (GB) (Shamardal), 1 3/4 lengths further back. The 9-4 favourite Ten Sovereigns (Ire) (No Nay Never), who was also in that group, faded to fifth late. “Coming here, I was in two minds about where to go but I knew Silvestre’s had a good bit of pace and in this lad is uncomplicated so I followed him and it worked out well,” Donnacha commented after steering his second Guineas winner after Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) 12 months ago. “I got a lovely tow into the race and he picked up well and saw it out well. I was always very comfortable, the horse was travelling well and I was keeping my eye to my right to watch the others but I never felt I had too much ground to make up. He took me there and I even got there a bit early again. I seem to be making a habit of kicking too early in a Guineas!” Aidan O’Brien revealed that there would be no Derby challenge from the winner. “He’s been a solid horse all the time and although everyone was of the opinion last year he would stay further John [Magnier] said all winter that he would be a real miler,” he explained. I knew the lads had it in their heads to start here and go to The Curragh before [Royal] Ascot and we knew that we were going to stretch the other horse to get a mile. It depended on where the pace was and Donnacha was more forward than Ryan, who had to wait to be sucked into the race. He’ll probably drop back to six.” Saturday, Newmarket, Britain QIPCO 2000 GUINEAS S.-G1, £523,750, Newmarket, 5-4, 3yo, 8fT, 1:36.84, gd. 1–MAGNA GRECIA (IRE), 126, c, 3, by Invincible Spirit (Ire) 1st Dam: Cabaret (Ire) (GSW-Ire), by Galileo (Ire) 2nd Dam: Witch of Fife, by Lear Fan 3rd Dam: Fife (Ire), by Lomond (340,000gns Wlg ’16 TATFOA). The subject of the latest masterclass in the saddle by Silvestre de Sousa, Communique (Ire) (Casamento {Ire}) had things entirely to suit in front virtually from the outset and proved too strong for last year’s winner Defoe (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}) in Saturday’s G2 Roaring Lion Jockey Club S. at Newmarket. In a contest that can throw up surprises, last year’s Listed Godolphin S. winner who traded at 12-1 was there to be shot at throughout but always appeared happy and thriving so typical of the stable’s runners at the head of affairs. At the line, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum’s bay had 1 1/4 lengths to spare over Defoe, with the fellow Johnston trainee Mildenberger (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) 2 1/4 lengths away in third. “He’s a nice horse when he gets his ground and last time [when seventh in the G3 John Porter S.] he blew up at Newbury,” de Sousa commented. “I had my way in front and he’s still improving.” Saturday, Newmarket, Britain ROARING LION JOCKEY CLUB S.-G2, £100,000, Newmarket, 5-4, 4yo/up, 12fT, 2:33.49, gd. 1–COMMUNIQUE (IRE), 127, c, 4, by Casamento (Ire) 1st Dam: Midnight Line (MGSW & G1SP-Eng, GSW & GISP-US, GISP-Can, $456,440), by Kris S. 2nd Dam: Midnight Air, by Green Dancer 3rd Dam: Evening Air, by J. Reminiscent of the sensational effort of Marsha (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) two years ago, David Armstrong’s Mabs Cross (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) defied a 7-pound penalty for her G1 Prix de l’Abbaye triumph in Saturday’s G3 Zoustar Palace House S.. Held up by Paul Mulrennan with just the 6-4 favourite Sergei Prokofiev (Scat Daddy) behind early, the 5-year-old skipped down the “dip” and powered up the rising ground to deny Equilateral (GB) (Equiano {Fr}) in the final stride for a neck success at odds of 6-1. Ahead of the Classics, we examine the pedigree and sales history of each contender. Sunday’s G1 1000 Guineas contenders range all the way from fourth-generation homebreds to high six-figure auction buys. ANGEL’S HIDEAWAY (IRE) (Dark Angel {Ire}-The Hermitage {Ire}, by Kheleyf) Angel’s Hideaway was a €390,000 Goffs Orby yearling purchase by Cheveley Park Stud from the Yeomanstown Stud consignment. The G3 Princess Margaret S. winner and recent G3 Nell Gwyn S. third is out of the listed-placed The Hermitage, who has also produced the G2 Mill Reef S. and G3 Hackwood S. second Perfect Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). O-Cheveley Park Stud. B-Yeomanstown Stud & Doc Bloodstock. T-John Gosden. DANDHU (GB) (Dandy Man {Ire}-Poldhu {GB}, by Cape Cross {Ire}) Dandhu, a half-sister to the listed-placed Maid A Million (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}), was a 75,000gns Book 2 yearling. The G3 Fred Darling S. winner is out of a half-sister to the one-mile G1 Falmouth S. winner Rajeem (GB) (Diktat {GB}), the dam of multiple Group 3-winning sprinter Invincible Army (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). O-The Dandhu Partnership. B-Barton Bloodstock. T-David Elsworth. FAIRYLAND (IRE) (Kodiac {GB}-Queenofthefairies {GB}, by Pivotal {GB}) Fairyland is the most expensive public purchase of this group, having been bought from breeder Tally-Ho Stud for 925,000gns as a yearling at Book 1. Remarkably, the mare’s now 2-year-old filly by Muhaarar (GB) brought the exact same price at Book 1 last year when sold to Shadwell off the back of Fairyland’s G1 Cheveley Park S. win. Queenofthefairies is a half-sister to the joint champion 2-year-old and multiple Group 1-winning sprinter Dream Ahead (Diktat {GB}), and her second foal, Now Or Never (Ire) (Bushranger {Ire}), won the G3 Leopardstown 1000 Guineas Trial and was third in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas. O-Mrs E M Stockwell & Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith. B-Tally-Ho Stud. T-A P O’Brien. FLEETING (IRE) (Zoffany {Ire}-Azafata {Spa}, by Motivator {GB}) Originally a €50,000 Arqana December Foal when picked up by HSV Agency from the Ombreville draft, Fleeting doubled her price at the Arqana August yearling sale when Robert Nataf’s Horse France signed the ticket at €100,000. Fleeting’s dam Azafata was the champion 3-year-old filly in Spain, and the extended family includes the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner and sire Poliglote (GB) (Sadler’s Wells). O-Mrs John Magnier & Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith. B-Fernando Bermudez. T-A P O’Brien. GARREL GLEN (GB) (Mount Nelson {GB}-Azure Mist {GB}, by Bahamian Bounty {GB}) Garrel Glen, not seen since winning a novice median auction race in October, is raced by co-breeder David Noblett. Garrel Glen is the fourth foal and second winner thus far out of the mare, who has a yearling colt by Bated Breath (GB). O-David P Noblett. B-Dullingham Park Stud & Mr D Noblett. T-Mark H Tompkins. HERMOSA (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}-Beauty Is Truth {Ire}, by Pivotal {GB}) Representing the potent Galileo over Pivotal cross, the G3 Weld Park S. winner Hemosa is the latest standout for the excellent mare Beauty Is Truth, who has also left the multiple Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed sprinter Fire Lily (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) and, from matings with Galileo, G1 Ranvet S. winner The United States (Ire) and G1 British Champions Fillies & Mare S. and G1 Matron S. winner Hydrangea (Ire). Unsurprisingly, the relative of champion sprinter Last Tycoon (Ire) and the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois and G1 Coronation S. winner Immortal Verse (Ire) has been mated exclusively with Galileo since 2010, and she has 2-year-old and yearling fillies to come. O-Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith & Mrs John Magnier. B-Beauty Is Truth Syndicate. T-A P O’Brien. ICONIC CHOICE (GB) (Sixties Icon {GB}-Adorable Choice {Ire}, by Choisir {Aus}) Iconic Choice was second by just a short head to Dandhu in the Fred Darling, and if she were to go one better on Sunday it would be a true fairytale story, as she was bought back for just £4,500 by vendor Kinsale Stud at Tattersalls Ireland’s Ascot November mixed sale as a yearling. O/B-John Brown. T-Tom Dascombe. IRIDESSA (IRE) (Ruler of the World-Senta’s Dream {GB}, by Danehill) Iridessa, who last year became the first Group 1 winner for her young sire Ruler of the World when winning the G1 Fillies’ Mile, is a granddaughter of the GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf victress Starine (Fr) (Mendocino) O-Mrs C C Regalado-Gonzalez. B-Whisperview Trading Ltd. T-Joseph O’Brien. JUST WONDERFUL (Dansili {GB}-Wading {Ire}, by Montjeu {Ire}) Just Wonderful is a typical beautifully bred homebred for the Coolmore partners. The G3 Flame of Tara S. and G2 Rockfel S. winner Just Wonderful is out of Wading, who also won the Rockfel and is herself out of Cherry Hinton (GB) (Green Desert), a sister to Sea The Stars (Ire) and Galileo (Ire). Wading has a 2-year-old colt by War Front named Bluebeard’s Castle and a yearling colt by American Pharoah. O-Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith & Mrs John Magnier. B-Orpendale, Chelston & Wynatt. T-A P O’Brien. LADY KAYA (IRE) (Dandy Man {Ire}-Kayak {GB}, by Singspiel {Ire}) Lady Kaya, a daughter of the Italian listed-placed Kayak, was bought by Chinook Farm from the Ballylinch Stud draft for €15,000 as a Goffs November foal. Unsold as a yearling for €12,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale, she entered the stable of trainer Sheila Lavery in the colours of her niece, Joanne, and enters the 1000 Guineas a huge chance off an eye-catching win in the G3 1000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown on Apr. 6. O-Joanne Lavery. B-John O’Connor. T-Ms Sheila Lavery. LOOK AROUND (GB) (Kingman {GB}-Magic America, by High Yield) Look Around is a homebred for George Strawbridge out of the G3 Prix Miesque winner and G1 Prix Morny second Magic America, a 625,000gns acquisition in December 2007 who was moved on for 60,000gns in 2016 after foaling Look Around. She had previously produced the French Group 3-placed Sara Lucille (GB) (Dansili {GB}) for Strawbridge and has 2-year-old and yearling colts by Zoffany (Ire). O/B-George Strawbridge. T-Andrew Balding. MOT JUSTE (Distorted Humor-Time On {GB}, by Sadler’s Wells) Another homebred, the Nell Gwyn runner-up Mot Juste is from a line of stakes producers owned and bred by Robert Barnett. Her dam, Time On, won the G2 Prix de Malleret and the second dam, Time Away (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), was victorious in the G3 Musidora S. and third in the G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Nassau S. and is also the second dam of the G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Cursory Glance (Distorted Humor). The fourth dam, also bred by Barnett, is the brilliant four-time Group 1-winning mare Time Charter (Saritamer). O-R Barnett. B-W&R Barnett. T-Roger Varian. QABALA (Scat Daddy-Entwine, by Empire Maker) Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani’s Al Shahania Stud spent $300,000 on Qabala, from the last crop of Scat Daddy, as a weanling at the Fasig-Tipton November sale in 2016. The second dam is Flute (Seattle Slew), winner of four Grade Is as a 3-year-old including the GI Kentucky Oaks. O-H H Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani. B-Eutrophia Farm. T-Roger Varian. SKITTER SCATTER (Scat Daddy-Dane Street, by Street Cry {Ire}) Another daughter of the much-missed Scat Daddy to line up here, the G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Skitter Scatter is out of a winning half-sister to the G1 Dewhurst S. winner Intense Focus (Giant’s Causeway), while third dam Zavaleta (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}) won the Listed 1000 Guineas Trial S. and is a half-sister to G1 Gran Criterium winner Sholokhov (Ire). The mother-and-son team of Sonia and Anthony Rogers bred Skitter Scatter’s dam, Dane Street, in partnership with Three Chimneys Farm and in November 2016, just months after she’d produced Skitter Scatter, the Rogers’s bought Three Chimneys out of the partnership of Dane Street for $260,000 at Keeneland November. O-Anthony Rogers & Mrs Sonia Rogers. B-Anthony Rogers & Mrs Sonia Rogers. T-John Oxx. STAR TERMS (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}-Best Terms {GB}, by Exceed and Excel {Aus}) Another homebred here for Robert Barnett, Star Terms is in fact from the same family as Mot Juste. Like that one she counts the Barnett-bred G1 Oaks and G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. winner Time Charter as her fourth dam but the lines branch off thereafter. Star Terms’s third dam is the Shirley Heights (GB) mare By Charter (GB), the dam of three stakes winners as well as Sharp Terms, who produced Barnett’s G2 Queen Mary S. and G2 Lowther S. winner Best Terms, the dam of Star Terms. Just as in Saturday’s Newmarket Classic, Scat Daddy’s influence is strong in Sunday’s G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas with two daughters of the late sire sensation in Qabala and Skitter Scatter at the forefront. The former is still a raw prospect, having registered two wins from two starts both at this track and bids to become the first winner of the seven-furlong Apr. 16 G3 Nell Gwyn S. to double up since Speciosa (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) in 2006. Qabala will be ridden by David Egan, who remarkably will be joined in the race by his father John who partners the outsider Garrel Glen (GB) (Mount Nelson {GB}). The latter is a long way below this standard on known form, but Qabala is the likely market leader with all the pressure on the 2017 champion apprentice. “It was unbelievable last time [in the Nell Gwyn],” David said of Qabala on Saturday. “Everything went to plan there–we took our time and she picked up well up the hill. She had been training well at home and has done everything right since, so hopefully she’ll run big. She’ll appreciate it if the rain stays away and will 100% get the mile, as she was nearly off the bridle at halfway last time. To have the chance to get a ride on a Guineas favourite is unreal and to have dad in there too is great.” Skitter Scatter’s profile is in stark contrast, with the Airlie Stud homebred having begun her juvenile campaign with a defeat of Sergei Prokofiev (Scat Daddy) in a five-furlong maiden at Dundalk way back last April. Racing’s proverbial rubber ball, she was a relentless learner throughout the remainder of her season with her entrepreneurial spirit garnering rich rewards in the G3 Silver Flash S. at Leopardstown and G2 Debutante S. and G1 Moyglare Stud S. at The Curragh. Ten years after John Oxx delivered a phenomenon in Sea the Stars (Ire) to an unsuspecting Newmarket faithful, a win for the filly he has so gratefully ensconced into his stable would prompt emotive scenes. It is worth noting that when Virginia Waters (Kingmambo) gave Aidan O’Brien his first Guineas success in 2005 she was ending an 11-year hiatus for successful Irish-trained fillies in this. Before the Stack stable’s Las Meninas (Ire) (Glenstal) shone in 1994, students had to go back to 1966 to find the Ballydoyle raider Glad Rags (Ire) as the latest to swoop from those shores. Now in the era of the superfillies the axis has swung, with four of the last seven renewals falling to a selection of the Coolmore-owned contingent and an expectancy each year that the Irish are the ones to beat. Perhaps the most interesting of them all this time is Evie Stockwell’s ‘TDN Rising Star’ Fairyland (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), mainly because she is bred so much for speed yet is given her opportunity by a stable already replete with guaranteed stayers. Unlike the 2000 Guineas, the fillies’ Classic has not proven a bridge too far for the previous year’s speed juveniles with Natagora (Fr) (Divine Light {Jpn}) and Attraction (GB) (Efisio {GB}) two recent winners who had plied their trade over sprint trips at two. There are also a plethora of fast fillies who made the frame here such as Tiggy Wiggy (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), Maqaasid (GB) (Green Desert), Dazzle (GB) (Gone West) and Marling (Ire) (Lomond). Frankie Dettori was on Scorpion (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) for Ballydoyle in the 2005 G1 St Leger and has another rare ride for the stable on the G1 Cheveley Park S. and G2 Lowther S. winner. “I like her–she’s very, very tough and although everyone is going to say she’s not won beyond six she’s got a lots of guts and a big heart,” he said. “If push comes to shove and she’s in the fight, she’s going to come out best. If she stays she’ll be there. The form is there in black-and-white.” Family Endures Test of Time In 1982 Robert Barnett’s silks were brought back into the second spot in the winner’s enclosure here by the filly that would go on to bear them with success in the higher echelons of the sport. She was called Time Charter (GB) and 37 years after her defeat by Cracksman’s third dam On the House (Fr), the cerise colours are back on two of her descendants in Mot Juste (Distorted Humor) and Star Terms (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). Interestingly, the latter hails from the Richard Hannon stable who managed to conjure a Guineas victory out of the outsider Billesdon Brook (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) 12 months ago despite her being well-beaten in her trial. Star Terms was fourth in the G3 Fred Darling S. over an inadequate seven-furlong trip last time on Apr. 13, as was the millennium Guineas heroine Lahan (GB) (Unfuwain). David Elsworth has yet to win this Classic and could put that right with Dandhu (GB), who along with Lady Kaya (Ire) provide sire Dandy Man (Ire) with a formidable duo in this line-up. Successful in the Fred Darling, she renews rivalry with ‘TDN Rising Star’ Just Wonderful (Dansili {GB}) after finding her 1 3/4 lengths too strong in the G2 Rockfel S. over seven furlongs here in September and could be a different proposition with extra maturity gained over the intervening months. Fast conditions are a concern, however. “She is a good filly. I am just a bit concerned about the quick ground,” he said. “She went to Newbury for her trial and she had done a lot of honest preparation, but she hadn’t done any competitive work. She hadn’t had a strong preparation for an animal that was going to run in that class of race. She has come out of the race well and she is pretty fit. I believe she is in good shape and I don’t think the trainer has messed it up.” Billesdon Brook is back to the scene of her finest hour in the supporting G2 Charm Spirt Dahlia S., where she encounters ‘TDN Rising Star’ Veracious (GB) (Frankel {GB}). The latter bids to provide Sir Michael Stoute with a seventh renewal and Cheveley Park Stud with a fourth following a solid 3-year-old campaign which saw her win the G3 Atalanta S. at Sandown in September and finish third in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot in June and G1 Nassau S. at Goodwood in August. Fillies of the Classic generation take in the Listed Tweenhills Pretty Polly S. won in recent times by Lah Ti Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), Jazzi Top (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), Taghrooda (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), Talent (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) and Ouija Board (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}). The first three hailed from the John Gosden stable and Shambolic (Ire) (Shamardal) is the chosen representative this time. The Duke of Devonshire and Duke of Roxburghe’s homebred was fourth in the G1 Fillies’ Mile here in October before finishing a disappointing seventh in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud later that month. Trainer Chris Waller sent Nobu across the Tasman for the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) in early March but the gelding was disappointing, beating just one runner home. He returned to Sydney and ran second in a benchmark race over 1550m at Randwick last Monday week before stepping up in distance on Saturday to beat stablemate Duchess Of Lennox... The 13-race live program Friday at Churchill Downs, anchored by the 145th running of the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks, won by Serengeti Empress (Alternation), was witnessed by a crowd of 105,719 that accounted for record all-sources wagering on both the entire card and the Kentucky Oaks itself. All-sources wagering on the full card totaled $60.2 million, an 8% increase over the previous record of $55.8 million which was set just last year. All-sources wagering on the Oaks reached $19.4 million, a rise of 10% over last year’s then-record $17.5 million. Following a record-breaking Thursday (‘Thurby’) crowd of 48,212, Friday attendance was down 7% year-over-year, as early-morning rains kept the numbers down. “Congratulations to the connections of Serengeti Empress and special thanks to all of the horse owners, trainers and jockeys who participated in today’s races,” said Kevin Flanery, President of Churchill Downs Racetrack. “Today’s record handle shows that the Kentucky Oaks has established itself as one of the world’s most popular events. “Our guests were able to benefit from the most recent improvements to the facility including the new Starting Gate Suites Rooftop Lounge that added approximately 500 new seats. We also made several improvements to dining areas inside the facility and replaced nearly 25,000 seats in our outdoor grandstand and clubhouse sections that enhanced the guest experience. We look forward to [Saturday] for what we know will be a memorable 145th running of the Kentucky Derby,” Flanery added. Two United States Senators made the claim on Friday that horses competing in the GI Kentucky Derby “will be injected with painkillers before being loaded into the starting gate” in a press release that announced a pending federal horse racing oversight bill titled “The Racehorse Doping Ban Act of 2019.” The bill would authorize the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) to “develop rules for permitted and prohibited substances and create anti-doping education, research, testing and adjudication programs for horse racing.” Tom Udall (D-NM) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) are the sponsors. Introduction is slated for next week. “It is past time that Congress stop rewarding the horse racing industry for its inhumane doping violations with sweetheart gambling privileges and millions in casino slots subsidies,” said Udall. “It’s clear industry leaders are more concerned with their profits than protecting these iconic creatures,” Wyden said. “It’s time for Congress to step in and end the cycle of abuse by banning the cruel practice of doping in horse racing once and for all.” Stated goals in the release included “an end to race-day medication; a harmonized medication policy framework for all races with interstate ‘simulcast’ wagering; stiff penalties for cheating, including ‘one and done’ and ‘three strikes, you’re out’ lifetime bans for the worst cases; and ensur[ing] racehorse drug administrations meet veterinary ethics.” The release pointed out that competing House of Representatives legislation, the Horseracing Integrity Act of 2019 (which has existed in some form since 2015), would not be an effective bill because it “would not specifically ban the most harmful doping practices but rather create an industry dominated panel to list approved racehorse drugs.” Udall and Wyden sponsored similar legislation in 2013. In 2015, Udall and former Representative Joe Pitts (R-PA) introduced legislation “to eliminate the federal statute that allows most wagering on horse racing to encourage the sport to end doping and crack down on cheaters,” the release stated. “With racehorse death rates higher than in any other country, the U.S. industry has completely failed to self-regulate its doping and corruption abuses,” Udall said. “Legislation to ban doping in horseracing is the meaningful action we need to end the abuse of these iconic animals. Headlines around the country make it clear the future of this sport is in serious doubt, and this may be the last chance for meaningful reform–it’s time for industry leaders to take the blinders off.” The post New Fed Bill Takes Aim at ‘Inhumane Doping’ appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
