Champion juvenile and 'TDN Rising Star' MGISW Fierceness (City of Light) will join the ranks at Ashford Stud upon his retirement from racing, the farm announced via release Sunday. The champion juvenile from 2023 is a leading GI Breeders' Cup Classic contender and will likely be one of the favorites at post-time. Of the others, Coolmore will have two other rooting interests as well with 'TDN Rising Star' GISW Sierra Leone (Gun Runner) and 'TDN Rising Star' MG1SW-Eng City of Troy (Justify) in the race. That group accounts for three of the first four in the wagering. Fierceness was a runaway winner of the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita by 6 1/4 lengths last year, and turned the GI Florida Derby into an exhibition early this spring, winning by 13 1/2 lengths en route to his start in the GI Kentucky Derby. Finishing 15th in America's premier Classic, he returned to the races in late July in the GII Jim Dandy Stakes with redemption in mind, and claimed it by a length over Sierra Leone. He was last seen defeating 'TDN Rising Star' MGISW Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna) by a head in the GI Travers Stakes. While her connections passed on an opportunity in the Breeders' Cup next weekend, 'TDN Rising Star' With the Angels (Omaha Beach) kept things rolling in New York with yet another stakes win in Sunday's Maid of the Mist Stakes. Dubbed a 'Rising Star' at Saratoga with an 11 1/2-length romp against New York-breds Aug. 22, she stepped out an additional furlong and put 9 3/4 lengths on the field in the Joseph A. Gimma Stakes Sept. 22. The no-doubt favorite at 1-9 trying the flat mile Sunday, With the Angels didn't miss a beat as she once more jumped to the lead from the middle of the gate and put a length back to eventual runner up Boston's Phinest (Honest Mischief). While never supremely ahead as in her previous starts, With the Angels was never truly challenged here either and responded to stretch urging by Jose Ortiz to come home 3 1/4 lengths clear. “She passes another test,” said winning trainer Linda Rice. “We decided against the [GI] Frizette. We wanted to give her a chance to get a few more races under her belt before she meets open company – that was the plan, and that's what we did today. She's a very good gate horse. Santa Anita Park is approaching its 90th anniversary Dec. 26 with the opening of the Classic Meet, and the track is calling on the public to vote for the 13 'top moments' in track history, it was announced via presser. Voting on those moments will be open until Friday, Nov. 8 at 5:00 p.m. PT with the top 13 vote-getters being featured in Santa Anita's wall calendar, which is provided to on-track patrons on opening day each year. There are 15 nominations to choose from, which were selected by a panel of horse racing media veterans. A two-horse race in the wagering played out exactly as the public saw it going with Sacrosanct (Honest Mischief) getting the best of his GSW/GISP rival Mo Plex (Complexity) in Sunday's Sleepy Hollow Stakes to kick off the stakes action for Empire Showcase Day at Belmont's Aqueduct meet. A debut winner at Saratoga, Sacrosanct unleashed on the field in the Bertram F. Bongard Stakes last out Sept. 22, wiring an over-matched group by 12 lengths to set up Sunday's showdown in a step up in distance facing Mo Plex who was a last-out third in the GI Champagne Stakes over this course and distance. Content to sit behind that rival early, the 2-5 favorite was eased along to keep pace in second into the far turn past the half in :46.21. In a duel past the quarter pole, the top pair threw down into the final sixteenth with Sacrosanct having the most left late to clear off for the score. “I thought he could get the mile today, but he really had to work for it,” said assistant trainer to Brad Cox, Dustin Dugas. “I was worried about Mo Plex as he already had a mile start under him and I knew he'd be a tough one to beat. With over 100 horses boasting Timeform ratings of 100 or greater in a catalogue that includes high-quality drafts from Coolmore, Juddmonte and Shadwell, is it any wonder that buyers flock from all over the world to get in on the action at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses-In-Training Sale? If there is one jurisdiction that has flexed its buying power more than any other at this sale in recent years it's Australia. And it's easy to see why. In the past decade alone, 13 Group 1 races have been won Down Under by horses who were sourced directly at this sale. Just Fine (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) is one of those. Sold for 300,000gns by Sir Michael Stoute's Freemason Lodge Stables on behalf of the Queen in 2022, he landed the Group 1 Metropolitan for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. Bigger things could yet be to come for Just Fine, who is on course to run in next Tuesday's Melbourne Cup, and the stable will be busy trying to unearth the next quality import at Tattersalls this week. Speaking about the appeal of the sale, Rob Waterhouse, giant of the bookmaking industry in Australia and husband to the legendary trainer, said, “The reality is that Europe–in particular Britain and Ireland–is much better at producing stayers than we are here in Australia. That's the long and the short of it. I am sure that it is all to do with climate–it's easier to produce sprinters in a hotter climate. Europe produces great stayers and we're dreadful at it!” Neither Rob nor Gai will be in attendance at Tattersalls but the team will be in safe hands in the shape of Claudia Fitzgerald, bloodstock manager for the stable, and leading bloodstock agent Johnny McKeever. “We're lucky to have Claudia Fitzgerald who goes over there on my wife's behalf,” Waterhouse said. “She does a great job at inspecting the horses and is assisted by a good Irishman in Johnny McKeever. They do a great job for us. We're lucky enough to keep a significant database of British, Irish and French form, which is a bit different to Timeform and Racing Post, but similar. We go through that database and try to find the ones that are of a certain standard. From there, we target the ones we like on type.” Using Just Fine as an example, that horse arrived at the sales off the back of three wins for Stoute, in races that carried winning purses of £5,175.20, £6,442.50 and £7,851. The winning cheque for the Metropolitan came to a cool £245,762.71 while the same horse provided his connections with another major payday when winning a Group 3 that carried winning prize-money of £160,427.81 earlier this month. That is far from an isolated example of a horse providing its owners with a return on investment in Australia. Fellow sale graduates Fawkner Park (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), Herman Hesse (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Royal Patronage (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Future History (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) and more have done similarly well for their connections this year alone. With such riches on offer, it would be easy to forgive the Waterhouse and Bott team for stretching the budget every now and again. So how will the outfit be approaching bidding on prospective stars this week? Claudia Fitzgerald | Tattersalls “Very sensibly,” comes the reply from Waterhouse. “Gai tries to be conservative in what she spends at the sales. Unfortunately, she is beaten far more often than she is successful and we try not to get involved in bidding wars. By the same token, she can be very inventive. We knew of a particular horse who was very much in demand a few years ago and we loved this horse. Our competitors also loved this horse. We knew the vendors wanted 300,000gns for the horse and we surprised the auctioneers on the day because, when they called for an opening bid of 20,000gns, we bid the 300,000gns. They were a little flummoxed by these unusual tactics and initially refused to take the bid. They said, 'we're only asking for 20,000gns'. But we bought it for 300,000gns and, after the sale, our competitors told us that they were going to go to the 300,000gns mark so it had the potential to make a lot more. Gai is very audacious in what she does.” He added, “We're looking forward to running Just Fine, who came from this sale, in the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday week. There are a lot of valuable races in Australia but there has to be a limit on what you spend at the sales if you want to get your money back. The way we approach it is, we'd rather buy more horses at a lower average than less horses for a greater sum. There are 104 races with prize-money of a million Australian dollars or more every year. That is a huge number. “I'm not sure what the figures are for this year, but last season there were 724 horses imported from Britain, Ireland, France and more. That number will definitely be over 800 this year so there are a lot of horses being bought to continue their careers in Australia. The majority of those would be mile-plus horses, too.” This week's sale will take place off the back a record-breaking October Yearling Sale and, while it's hard to draw too many parallels between the that and the H-I-T market, Waterhouse says it can only be a positive that so many wealthy people have had their interests piqued by the game in recent times. He said, “It's not apples and apples but, by the same token, the rich people in today's world are spending a lot of money on horses in recent years. There is a lot of money about. But Gai normally has no orders. She will hopefully buy half a dozen horses at Tattersalls and then offer them to clients. That's the way it works. But we love shopping at Tattersalls and I must say Jason Singh is always a great help to us.” Waterhouse concluded, “Claudia and Johnny know the types of horses that Gai likes to buy. She likes horses who are a bit taller and leaner than average. Of course, they have to be sound. Nobody should have been to surprised when Tarifa (Bernardini) won Saturday's GII Mother Goose S. at the Belmont at the Big A meet, turning the tables on the favored Gun Song (Gun Runner). The same goes for Saturday's GII Fayette S. at Keeneland, won by the Cox-trained Hit Show (Candy Ride {Arg}). Starting one month ago, on Sept. 27, he's been on a tear, winning 12 of the 17 (70 % percent) stakes races he has entered in. Overall, Cox is 20-for-63 (32%) for the month of October. He ran away with the fall meet training title at Keeneland with14 wins from 37 starters. At Belmont at the Big A meet he's won 11 of 28 starts (39%) “You get a feel for when things are right and the horses are doing well and the entries are good,” Cox said. “I always try to have a good Keeneland fall. Obviously, the horses are doing well, but a lot of them really figured. Idiomatic was 1-5 in the Spinster. (Mother Goose winner) Tarifa is a really good filly who always tries hard. But remember, she was 2-1. There are lots of times where you run horses in graded stakes level that are 2-1 or less. You run six or seven of them and only one wins. That happens all the time. Right now, everything is lining up just right.” Cox, knowing the cyclical nature of the sport, says he tries not to get too high when he goes through a good streak. “I just know you won't always get head bobs like we got in the Mother Goose,” he said. “When things don't go well I don't get down, but I also try not to get too high when we win. I try to stay as even as I can. And it's hard for me. I am a very competitive person. I try to take it all in and I always say play the next play. Something doesn't go well, I always say get in the huddle, call the next play and try to execute the next play.” Idiomatic en route to winning the Spinster | Coady Media In the midst of his run of good fortune on the track, his stable suffered a serious setback when it was announced that Idiomatic (Curlin), the winner of the 2023 GI Breeders' Cup Distaff was injured and had been retired. Set to go in this year's Distaff, she appeared to be Cox's best chance to win a Breeders' Cup race. “I felt like she had never been as good,” Cox said. “It's easy to say it now, but I felt like she was going to be very hard to beat. She breezed great last week. I thought she's moving better than she's ever moved. But by Tuesday there were some question marks with how she was moving. It was easy for us to do what we did. We took the x-rays to make sure she was in good shape. We saw more on the x-rays than we needed to see. It was an easy decision. We are very fortunate to have horses like this and I have to thank Juddmonte for giving us the opportunity with her. It was an easy decision once we saw the x-rays. I just loaded her up a few minutes ago, gave her a couple of peppermints and sent her home. It's easy to be excited about her as a broodmare.” Ironically, and especially after the Idiomatic injury, Cox doesn't appear to have a particularly strong hand for the Breeders' Cup. He has pre-entered five horse, but has said that one, Destino d'Oro (Bolt d'Oro) will not compete in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. That leaves him with Immersive (Nyquist) in the GI Juvenile Fillies; Highland Falls (Curlin) in GI Breeders' Cup Classic; Federal Judge (Army Mule) in the Sprint; and Saudi Crown (Always Dreaming). He has been pre-entered in the Classic and the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. When asked which of his horses is going to outrun its odds, he quickly came up with Highland Falls. Owned by Godolphin, he turned a major corner when winning the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup in his most recent start. “I am really excited about Highland Falls,” Cox said. “I think he is set up for a very big effort. His figures stack up. If he's close early and if he gets the trip he'll be right there at the wire.” Immersive also looks like a major threat. The Classic In a sport where too many people are afraid to take chances, you have to applaud trainer Chief Stipe Cowans and owner Michael Foster for entering Next (Not This Time) in the Classic. The thing is, no one knows quite what to make of him as there has never been a horses like him entered in the Breeders' Cup. For the last 14 months he has been running in nothing but dirt stakes, with the distances ranging from a-mile-and-three-eighths in the GII Brooklyn S. to a mile-and-three-quarters in the Birdstone S. He won one race (the 2023 GIII Greenwood Cup) by 25 lengths and another (the 2024 Birdstone) by 22 1/4 lengths. He has been nearly unbeatable, but obviously against horses that are inferior to what he will face in the Classic. That's one concern and the other is that he won't get the kind of slow pace he gets in his marathon races, where he can lope along at his own pace. Where will he be and what will happen if they go the opening half in :46? So, he may not win. In fact, the odds are against him, but there is absolutely no harm in running him in the Classic. There's not a single dirt “marathon” race left on the 2024 calendar, so it's not like he's missing out on something. And what if he does win or run a good second or third? That will open up so many new avenues for him to chase in 2025, races with far bigger purses than the races he's been running in. His career earnings are $1,336,361. Just by finishing second in the Classic, which is worth $3 million, he will have smashed that number in one race. The Sports Boulevard Riyadh Dirt Sprint and Longines Red Sea Turf Handicap will be run as Group 2 contests for the first time in 2025, it was announced by the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia (JCSA) on Sunday. Both races take place during the Saudi Cup meeting, which is scheduled for Saturday, February 22 as part of the 2024/25 Riyadh season. The Riyadh Dirt Sprint, won this year by Japanese raider Remake (Jpn) (Lani), will see its prize-money boosted by $500,000 to $2 million, while the Red Sea Turf Handicap, which went to the Aidan O'Brien-trained Tower Of London (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), will once again be worth $2.5 million. Several race upgrades have also been announced for the domestic Riyadh season, which began at King Abdulaziz Racecourse on Thursday, October 17. These include what will be the first international Thoroughbred Group race staged outside of the Saudi Cup meeting, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup, which is set to be run as a Group 3 for the first time on Saturday, January 25. The race serves as a qualifier for the Saudi Cup and was won last season by Power In Numbers (Girvin) when run as a Listed contest. Another qualifying event for the Saudi Cup meeting has also been upgraded in the form of the Prince Khalid Abdullah Cup, a qualifier for the Group 2 Howden Neom Turf Cup. Scheduled for Friday, January 24, the race has been promoted to Listed status. Meanwhile, the newly-promoted Listed King Abdulaziz Racetrack Championship Cup on Saturday, March 15 will bring the curtain down on the 2024/25 Riyadh season, which includes 710 races, run across 62 racedays, more than ever before. Prize-money across the season has also hit a new high with a total of SAR84,628,000 (around $22.5 million/€20.8 million) on offer, excluding the Saudi Cup meeting. By Michael Guerin Merlin faces an old threat and a new one in the Ashburton Flying Stakes today but co-trainer Scott Phelan isn’t worried about either. The northern star has been New Zealand’s best pacer this year and looks the biggest local threat to Aussie champion Leap To Fame in the $1m IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington in 15 days. The latter confirmed his NZ trip with an effortless win at Menangle on Saturday night and now he is coming to the Cup it looks like only Merlin or arch rival Don’t Stop Dreaming could realistically defend New Zealand’s pacing honour. They go head to head in today’s $60,000 Group 2 NZB Airfreight Ashburton Flying Stakes and it is a rare standing start test for both of them as while they have had five standing start attempts between them and handled them well, neither has started on a full front line in a stand before. Don’t Stop Dreaming’s three career standing starts have been off 15m and then twice off 20m handicaps while Merlin’s two career standing starts have both been off 20m handicaps. Horses will usually handle being off a handicap in a standing start, with more room to move and horses to follow out, better than the more claustrophobic environment of being in a full front line of horses like both stars face today. But Phelan, who trains Merlin with legend Barry Purdon, isn’t concerned. “He is such a good pacer and so clean-gaited we are really confident he will be fine at the start,” says Phelan. “And he is drawn out a little wider so hopefully won’t have to stand for too long. “He is working great and we are really confident.” While Team Merlin have huge respect for Don’t Stop Dreaming they have had the better of him this year, with Merlin looking to have strengthened more. Don’t Stop Dreaming will have benefitted from his winter spell as he has a very busy start to 2024 and even if there is a length between them either way on ability the deciding factor could well be who steps better and gains tactical advantage. The stable also have Cold Chisel and Mach Shard in the Flying Stakes, both being place chances but it would be a surprise to see them overturn the favourites, even though Mach Shard did it twice in the autumn. The Purdon/Phelan team unleashed all sort of weapons at today’s huge meeting including what could be a very special juvenile filly in Youretheonethatiwant (R5, No.14) in the Dunstan Horsefeeds Sires’ Stakes Heat. She has been sizzling in the north but has a second line draw in a capacity field and Phelan warns he would prefer to drive her with one run, which means southern favourite Captains Mistress could get a fair way in front of her. “I think she will kick home hard but I don’t want to be circumnavigating them in the middle stages. But she can still win,” he offers. The stable also has Jeremiah (R7, No.7) and Better Knuckle Up (9) in the three-year-old Garrard’s Sires’ Stakes Sophomore Pace with Phelan unable to choose between the pair while earlier Confederate and Ultimate Racy Girl have at least place chances drawn to get good trailing runs. Three-time Grade I winner Gina Romantica (Into Mischief) will miss an intended engagement in Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Del Mar, according to the organization's social media post on X Sunday. Bred by Machmer Hall and campaigned by Peter Brant, the $1.025 million Keeneland September purchase repeated on the GI First Lady Stakes at Keeneland in her most recent start on Oct. 5. Earlier this season, the Chad Brown trainee finished runner-up in Saratoga's GII Ballston Spa Stakes and third at that venue in the GI Diana Stakes. She is also responsible for a victory in last season's GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland. Already an elite-level winner at 1600, 2400 and 2500 metres, Do Deuce (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) jumped out of the ground in the Tokyo straight and rattled home down the outside to add Sunday's G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) over the metric mile and a quarter. Fellow G1 Tokyo Yushun hero Tastiera (Jpn) (Satono Crown {Jpn}) could not resist the winner's flying finish and settled for second, while pacesetting Ho O Biscuits (Jpn) (Mind Your Biscuits) was a valiant third. Ho O Biscuits won the break from gate nine and set modest sectional times of :24.3 for the opening 400m and :47.9 for the first 800m as Do Deuce was settled one from the tail by the legendary Yutaka Take. Liberty Island (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}), favored in her first start since a third in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic in March, was handy enough to the pace, though deep on the course, beneath Yuga Kawada, while third choice Lebensstil (Jpn) (Real Steel {Jpn}) provided some cover for Do Deuce down the back of the track. Ho O Biscuits was still enjoying a fairly leisurely time of things on the pointy end and was first to face the judge, with Liberty Island poised about four off the inside and Tastiera close enough if good enough. The pacesetter carried the Tenno Sho field into the final furlong, but by this time, Take had peeled Do Deuce off the heels of Lebensstil and covered his final 600 metres in an other-worldly :32.5, outfinishing Tastiera for the victory. Ho O Biscuits held for third ahead of a closing Justin Palace (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), racing at a distance short of optimal. Liberty Island remained in contention into the final 250 metres, but dropped away to beat just two home. Do Deuce becomes the seventh horse to win Group 1 contests in four consecutive seasons, having taken out the Asahi Hai Futurity in 2021, the Tokyo Yushun the following season and last year's fan-voted Arima Kinen. It was a 20th JRA Group 1 for trainer Yasuo Tomomichi and an 82nd for Take, his first since the aforementioned Arima Kinen. “I wanted to show the true ability and strength of Do Deuce today, so I was really happy when he was able to display his usual powerful kick in the last stretch and crossed the wire first,” said Take, winning the Autumn Tenno Sho for the seventh time overall and for the first time since piloting Kitasan Black (Jpn) in 2017. “The pace was not very fast and I was relying on his strong finishing speed, so I didn't want to make any unnecessary moves in the first half of the race and settled him second from last.” Seventh to Kitasan Black's Equinox (Jpn) in last year's event and fourth to that Horse of the Year in the G1 Japan Cup, Do Deuce ran on strongly for fifth in this year's G1 Dubai Turf where he was hampered by fallen rival at a crucial stage. In his lone appearance since, Do Deuce may have struggled with easy underfoot conditions when sixth as the favourite in the G1 Takarazuka Kinen at Kyoto June 23. Pedigree Notes: Do Deuce is one of a dozen Group 1 winners for Heart's Cry, who was lost to the Japanese breeding industry in March 2023. Two of the stallion's sons–Suave Richard (Jpn) and Cheval Grand (Jpn)–count the Japan Cup among their top-level conquests, a race that figures the next landing spot for Do Deuce. A Grade III winner for Satish Sanan's Padua Stable in September 2012, Dust and Diamonds was runner-up in that year's GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint and was acquired days after for $900,000 by Borges Torrealba Holdings at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale. The two-year-old Square D'Alboni (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), an impressive winner of the Listed Prix Isonomy at Chantilly on Saturday, has been given a wildcard entry to the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale. In the kind of fascinating group 1 encounter that the preceding Criterium de Saint-Cloud definitely was not, Ballydoyle and Wootton Bassett (GB) were the main stories again at the culmination of Sunday's Criterium International. Ryan Moore had picked last Saturday's impressive Leopardstown maiden-winning TDN Rising Star Twain (Ire) over the stable's Arqana Series Criterium d'Automne winner Mount Kilimanjaro (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) and his judgement was proven spot-on once more as the son of Wading (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) emerged with the Rosegreen bragging rights to stamp himself as a genuine Classic candidate for 2025. As expected, the unbeaten 3-5 favourite Maranoa Charlie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) set off in isolation as he had previously when winning the course-and-distance G3 Prix Thomas Bryon but it was soon evident that he was tanking in the hands of Aurelien Lemaitre and merely setting it up for the closers. With the leader's goose cooked two out, it was left to the Irish colts to come to the fore and the 53-10 shot Twain had more gears than his stablemate from 300 metres out. Less than 24 hours after watching her former star Belclare (NZ) (Per Incanto) collect the A$2 million Gr.2 The Invitational (1400m) across the Tasman, Lisa Latta unveiled another Group One hopeful in the same colours at Trentham with Connello (NZ) (Time Test) storming home to take out the Happy Hire 1400. Latta prepared Belclare to win two editions of the Gr.1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) among a number of other feature successes, and now in the care of expat-Kiwi Bjorn Baker, the quality mare displayed her class in an all-the-way-win on the big stage at Royal Randwick. Belclare was bred and raced by Deb and David Woodhouse, and their familiar black-and-white silks were back on top closer to home on Sunday with the Time Test filly, who was coming off a last-start victory earlier this month at Egmont. Connello defeated Wire Rope on that occasion, but the latter started favourite in Sunday’s race at $2.80 ahead of the filly, who closed at $4.70. In the hands of Tina Comignaghi, Connello jumped away positively and settled into the one-one behind Anushka Shesastar, who sat outside of Wire Rope at a leisurely tempo. Coming off the turn, several of the three-year-olds struggled to kick in the heavy conditions, but Connello was in her element and stormed to the lead at the 200m, continuing to extend the margin to the post over a game Skipper’s Canyon and Wingman. Connello holds a nomination for the Gr.1 Barneswood Farm New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton Park, a race Latta has firmly on her agenda in three weeks’ time. “She’s just a really genuine filly that does everything right,” Latta said. “I think she’ll step-up to the mile and we look forward to heading south for the Guineas.” Latta shared a similar sense of pride after Belclare’s victory, particularly for her Wairarapa-based connections. “I was so proud watching her win a Group race over there and it’s great for the owners, Deb and David Woodhouse,” she said. “They really deserve it, and then to top it off with Connello was great.” Bred by David Woodhouse alongside HGT Bloodstock, Connello has won three of her 10 starts and over $80,000 in stakes for the former and Bill Rutherford. She is the eighth foal out of Woodhouse’s homebred Towkay mare Ballieborough. Allan Sharrock continues to be rewarded for the careful handling of his untapped sprinter Lazio (NZ) (Per Incanto), who collected a fourth-consecutive victory in the WRC Life Members 1000 at Trentham on Sunday. The son of Per Incanto has been lightly-raced by Sharrock, having just his sixth start on Sunday, with five previous appearances resulting in two seconds and three victories in succession. The market reflected his impeccable record, backing Lazio into $2.30 favouritism ahead of Bold Belle ($6) and Waihaha Falls ($8.40) as the only other runners in single figures, which was accurately emulated in the result. Carrying just 51kg under Rihaan Goyaram, Lazio gained cover early behind Bold Belle and the pair travelled comfortably through the testing conditions down the chute. The gelding got on terms with Bold Belle on straightening and they eventually broke clear of the remainder of the field at the 100m, fighting out the finish before Lazio proved too strong, taking the contest by a long head with Waihaha Falls a further 1 – ½ lengths back in third. Sharrock was thrilled with the five-year-old’s performance, particularly in a career limited by soundness issues. “I’m really proud of him, he’s a gorgeous type of animal and he would be a pin-up boy if he was a model,” Sharrock said. “With the issues he’s got with his joints, he’s doing a terrific job. While there is a bit of precipitation around, I’ll probably continue this prep, but the first sign of the tracks firming up, he’ll go to the paddock. “Unfortunately, his body just won’t let him do that, it’s quite sad in a way but I’m very proud of him in another way. “There’s a Listed race at Te Rapa but the chances of getting an off-track there are probably limited, and if it was firm, there is also an 1100m race at Wellington in a fortnight. “There’s more chance of rain at this end of the island, so it will all be determined by the weather at this stage.” Lazio is raced by Luigi Muollo’s Explosive Breeding, who bred the five-year-old alongside Sharrock and Paul Dombroski from Listed winner Madonna Mia. The well-performed race mare has been a star in the broodmare paddock, also producing Group Three placegetter Signora Nera and champion Hong Kong sprinter Lucky Sweynesse. Madonna Mia, part-owned by Waikato Stud, has been served by Savabeel in the 2024 breeding season. The victory capped off a successful week for Sharrock, picking up a double at New Plymouth on Friday with Grit and Swingit Our Way, while he was also pleased with the performances of juvenile filly Almakeitgood and Islington Lass, who finished fifth in the Gr.3 Gee and Hickton Thompson Handicap (1600m) at Trentham. “I was thrilled with her (Almakeitgood), she absolutely hates heavy ground and was dead on her feet at the 300, then had the audacity to pick herself up and get beaten a head,” he said. “I’m very proud of her efforts and she’d be going close to qualifying for the Karaka Millions, we’ll probably look for another race for her pre-Christmas but I like her, she’s a really nice filly. “Islington Lass was very brave to run fifth in the Thompson, I was really proud of her too.
