Star hurdler Berry The Cash will contest the Road To The Jericho (3200m) at Waverley on Sunday. Photo: Peter Rubery (Race Images Palmerston North) Mark Oulaghan has moved on from the disappointing outcome of the Great Northern Hurdle (4200m) and is looking forward to an unexpected opportunity with Berry The Cash. The Awapuni trainer has been around the jumping game long enough to not get too despondent when bad luck comes knocking, as it did last weekend at Te Rapa. Berry The Cash had been unbeaten in five lead-up outings over hurdles, including victory in the Grand National Hurdles (4200m) before he was badly hampered by a fallen rival in the Northern and dislodged rider Portia Matthews. The son of Jakkelberry had also won a flat event in July at Waverley and will return there on Sunday for a crack at the Road To The Jericho (3200m). “He seems really well so we’ll push on and give him his chance,” Oulaghan said. “I’d like to try him over two miles on the flat, it’s a good opportunity seeing as how he missed out last Sunday. “I didn’t think the field looked that strong on the noms and he’s a handy horse in the right grade, so it will be interesting.” However, even with the right result at Waverley, Oulaghan has all but ruled out Berry The Cash venturing across the Tasman for The Jericho Cup (4600m) to be run at Warrnambool on November 29. “You could say it’s Plan B and even if he won the chances of him going to Australia are pretty remote,” he said. Oulaghan will also have a strong winning chance at Wanganui on Saturday with his promising stayer Pinkerton to run in the Nufarm/Property Brokers Handicap (2040m). “He’s a good little horse, he’s just not very big and in the grade he’s in he has to carry a bit of weight,” he said. “The claim will help him and then we’ll look at running him in a few of those provincial open handicaps. That will suit him better when he drops back to 54kg.” The Niagara gelding has been allotted 61.5kg, which will be reduced by 3kg with the booking of apprentice Liam Kauri. Pinkerton was successful at Woodville and Trentham to take his tally to five wins from 22 appearances before time off and returned for a midfield finish at Wanganui at the end of last month. “He wasn’t very strong as a young horse so we left him alone and he started late so he hasn’t done a lot for a seven-year-old, hopefully he can do a bit over the next few months,” Oulaghan said. Meanwhile, star jumper West Coast is enjoying a deserved spell following a campaign that netted him his third Grand National Steeplechase (5600m) and second Great Northern Steeplechase (6500m). “He’s come through it all pretty good and seems to recover very well,” Oulaghan said. Overseas opportunities beckon West Coast, although options have yet to be seriously considered. “I still have to discuss it with the owners, at this stage the logical step would probably be to look a bit further afield, but we haven’t got anything specific in mind,” Oulaghan said. Group 1 winner Ladies Man. Photo: Peter Rubery (Race Images Palmerston North) Last weekend’s New Plymouth abandonment has forced Allan Sharrock into a change of plans with his Group 1 winner Ladies Man, who is entered to kick off his seven-year-old season in the H&T Agronomics/Agricom Open (1200m) at Wanganui on Saturday. The Seaton Park (1400m) at New Plymouth was intended to be Ladies Man’s first step along the road to a defence of his title in the Group 1 Livamol Classic (2040m) at Hastings on October 12. With that race washed away and a week lost from the build-up, Sharrock is now unwilling to overly tax the Zed gelding in a race against time over the next three weeks. “Losing that run last weekend means his Livamol prep is finished,” Sharrock said. “It’s just going to be too tough to get him ready for that race in the small amount of time that we have left. And if I pushed him too hard to try to get him there, I’d run the risk of ruining a very good horse. “There’s a lot of other good weight-for-age races coming up for him over the summer, and the first target we’ll work towards with him will probably be the Balmerino Stakes (Group 3, 2000m) at Ellerslie on Melbourne Cup Day. “He’s entered for Wanganui on Saturday, but the track is going to be quite testing there, so I haven’t yet decided whether he’ll run there or not. I also have the option of saving him for a better track at Te Rapa next Friday. But either way, he’s coming up well. “It’s a bit of a shame to have to rule him out of the Livamol, but we’ve still got his stablemate Islington Lass heading in that direction. She won very well last week despite disliking the wet ground and not being fully at concert pitch.” Horse racing bookmakers currently rates Islington Lass a $10 fifth favourite in a Livamol Classic market headed by El Vencedor ($5), Campionessa ($7), Mustang Valley ($7) and One Bold Cat ($7). Meanwhile, Sharrock’s team at Wanganui on Saturday also includes the Group 3 Metric Mile (1600m) contender Justaskme. This will be the 50th race of an outstanding career for the nine-year-old, who has won 13 races and banked more than $540,000. Justaskme’s 1800m open handicap was one of three races run at New Plymouth last Saturday before the meeting was called off. He made up ground from the back of the field to finish fourth behind Aljay. “That was a bit of a funny race,” Sharrock said. “They ran it six seconds slower than the first race, which was a Rating 65. It turned into a sprint to the finish and the on-speed horses just ran away from him a little bit, but it wasn’t a bad run. “With a senior rider on (Jonathan Riddell), 58 kilos on his back and a nice draw (nine), I think he’s a lot better than a runner’s chance on Saturday. It could end up being quite a nice race for him to finish up his very good career on. We’re not far away from that now.” Sharrock has a rare early two-year-old runner on Saturday with Almakeitgood lining up in the Pilet Contracting Ltd/Pioneer Seeds 2YO (800m). The filly is a daughter of Ardrossan and the Sepoy mare Cortado, which makes her a full-sister to last season’s talented juvenile Maracatu. Sharrock bought Almakeitgood for $90,000 from Elsdon Park’s draft in Book 1 of Karaka 2024. “I don’t have many early two-year-olds, but I bought this filly to run in the million-dollar race (Karaka Millions 2YO, 1200m) and I think she’s very talented,” Sharrock said. “It won’t be ideal track conditions on Saturday to kick a baby off in, although she seemed to handle heavy ground okay in her gallop on Tuesday. The fact that it’s the first race of the day should also help.” Sharrock also expects another strong showing from Bella Timing in the Manawatu Toyota/John Turkington Forestry (1200m). The four-year-old is a half-sister to Sharrock-trained stars Darci La Bella and Tavi Mac, and she has been runner-up in three of her last four appearances. “I’ve scratched a few runners on Saturday who had inside draws because of the way I think the track is going to be, but I think she’s nicely drawn at nine,” Sharrock said. “I thought she could win last week, but her race didn’t get run. From her work this week, I think she’s pretty close to the mark again and should be a very good chance. “She’s had quite a big campaign, so I might turn her out after this and save her for the autumn.” Horse racing news View the full article

Orchestral will contest the Almanzor – Proven Value 1400 at Ellerslie on Saturday. Photo: Race Images Saturday will mark the return of racing to Ellerslie Racecourse and last season’s New Zealand Champion Three-Year-Old Orchestral. The now four-year-old mare is unbeaten at the Auckland track in three starts, winning the TAB Karaka Millions 3YO (1600m), Group 2 Avondale Guineas (1600m), and Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m). She subsequently went on to win the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill and finished third in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m). Trainers Roger James and Robert Wellwood have been pleased with the way she has returned, and have given her a trial at Taupo and jump-out at Ellerslie in the lead-up to her resuming run in the Almanzor – Proven Value 1400. The daughter of Savabeel will carry 60.5kg from barrier six, with Craig Grylls aboard, two-kilograms less than Group 1 winner Campionessa. “It is good to be finally getting her out there and it’s nice to see a horse above her (in the weights). We thought we would be top weight,” Wellwood told Trackside. “We have been pretty soft on her this spring, she has grown a lot between three and four. “She looks a completely different mare now, she has got a big wither, she has probably lengthened out a little bit. She is probably only a frame of what she is going to be in six to 12 months. “She had a good jump-out at Ellerslie. We were thinking perhaps heading to the Arrowfield (Group 1 1600m), but after that jump-out we thought if we tried to get her there we would probably flatten her first-up. That’s the reason she is going to Ellerslie. 1400m and you know you are going to get a good track there. It will bring her forward for her next run.” Despite being a short-priced $2.20 favourite with horse racing bookmakers, Wellwood believes 1400m will be too short for his charge this weekend. “We are going into the weekend pretty happy with her,” he said. “1400m is going to be too short for her, but as long as she is hitting the line well and comes through it well, heading to a mile and further into the prep is where we are hoping to be competitive.” Australian targets beckon Orchestral post-Saturday, With the Cambridge trainers weighing up between either Sydney or Melbourne. “The two options that we are looking at are the Toorak (Group 1, 1600m) in Melbourne, which is three weeks post Ellerslie, or four weeks to the Angst Stakes (Group 3, 1600m), which is a mares’ mile in Sydney.” Orchestral will be joined in Saturday’s contest by stablemate Sudbina, who is on a path towards New Zealand Cup Week at Riccarton Park in November. “She went nicely in her first run without a trial, so she is going to come along from that well. Her work has been very good and I think the race will suit her,” Wellwood said. “She is ready to run a race and she is at a light weight (54kg). Whether she has got the class of the top two or three, we are unsure, but she is a nice mare and I think we are going to see her come into a nice race. “She has got a nomination for the TAB Mile (Group 3, 1600m) at Riccarton, so we have got that pencilled in, but we are just going to have to see how she is going. There are a lot of nice races around and there are some good fillies and mares options over Christmas and New Year.” Horse racing news View the full article

Bradman will contest the Group 3 Metric Mile (1600m) at Wanganui on Saturday. Photo: Peter Rubery (Race Images Palmerston North) There have been few horses with the consistency of Bradman over the past 12 months, and the versatile galloper will aim to continue that vein of form in Saturday’s Group 3 Metric Mile (1600m). Since winning the Listed Flying Handicap (1400m) in April, the son of Pins has placed in the Listed City Of Napier Sprint (1200m), Listed AGC Training Stakes (1600m) and the Group 3 Winter Cup (1600m), demanding respect in the Wanganui feature. Trained and co-owned by Roydon Bergerson, Bradman will be ridden by a very in-form Wiremu Pinn out of barrier seven, coincidentally jumping alongside his older full-brother No Compromise. “In the Winter Cup, he copped a check down the back when he’d just got settled and he over-raced, which probably cost him in the finish, but he fought like a tiger,” Bergerson said. “He went out to the paddock for a week to Chris Rutten’s for a quick freshen-up and we thought we’d bring him back for this race. “We intended to go to the jump-outs last week but they were cancelled, hence why he trialled on Wednesday. He does really well when he has a spell, so he just needed a bit of a tighten-up. “He’s pulled up super after yesterday and he looks a million dollars, so we’ll press on and run him.” The son of Pins holds a nomination for the Group 1 Arrowfield Stud Plate (1600m) next Saturday, but his Awapuni trainer indicated the final day at Hastings may prove more appealing. “We would possibly consider putting in a late nomination for the Livamol Classic (Group 1) at 2000m, the quick-back up wouldn’t probably suit unless it poured with rain at Hastings next week,” he said. “He’s still in the nominations for the Arrowfield, so we’ll know more after Saturday where we want to go.” Bergerson will have a pair of runners contesting the H&T Agronomics/Agricom OPN 1200, with the near certain Heavy conditions to suit both Reign It In and Farravallo. “Reign It In stood on a plate and missed a start a couple of weeks ago, but he’s come right now and we just gave him a quite trial yesterday, where he went to the line under a hold,” Bergerson said. “He’s ready to go again, wetter the better for him. “I thought the field may have been a little bit weaker, but with New Plymouth being abandoned last weekend, I see a few of those horses have popped up. “As long as he does everything right in the running, he should be competitive.” Reign It In was a last start winner at Otaki, while Farravallo was unsuited to the firm surface at Hastings, which came after a pair of wet-track victories in lower grades. “There’s just no races for Farravallo, I know it’s a big ask to step-up from winning a 65 race to running in an open handicap, but he loves the wet and likes to get on speed so that’s why we are running there,” Bergerson said. “It was just too firm for him at Hastings and he couldn’t keep up, so he’ll probably lead on Saturday and we’ll see what happens.” Up the road on Sunday, Queen Of Spades and Sweetjineen have accepted into the Ultra-Scan Mike O’Keefe (1650m) at Waverley, with the latter set to visit new Grangewilliam Stud sire Hilal should she bypass the Rating 75 contest. “She (Queen Of Spades) gets four-kilos off with Ralph’s apprentice (Rihaan Goyaram), I gave her a quiet trial yesterday just to keep her up to the mark and she’s run really well,” Bergerson said. “She should go well and wetter the better for her, she should be competitive. “Sweetjineen is working well and raced well at Woodville, but she was disappointing at Wanganui the other day. “We put that down to the track so we may not run her if the tracks too heavy, if that’s the case, she’ll probably go to the stallion instead and get a service, then we’ll carry on racing her in foal.” Horse racing news View the full article

Mr Brightside winning the 2022 Feehan Stakes. (Photo by George Sal/Racing Photos) Mr Brightside will continue his path toward the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley, aiming for a second win in the Group 2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) next Saturday. Following the Feehan, his next target will be the Group 1 Might And Power Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on October 12, which will serve as his final lead-up before the Moonee Valley weight-for-age showcase two weeks later. Mr Brightside returned to form with an impressive win in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington last Saturday, outlasting the front-running Pride Of Jenni in the final stages. “He pulled up just as well as he did first-up, and that was the best he had pulled up for two years. The wet track definitely worked in his favour and the way the race panned out, it was perfect. He’s in good order with further improvement to come, which is nice,” said Ben Hayes, who trains in partnership with his brothers JD and Will. “We’re going to the Feehan, then we’ll go to the Might And Power two weeks after that and then two weeks to the Cox Plate. “I think that is the best way for him to get to what his Grand Final is,” Hayes added. 2024 Goodwood winner Benedetta. (Photo by Scott Barbour/Racing Photos) Group 1-winning mare Benedetta will miss next Friday night’s Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) due to a minor setback. The five-year-old was withdrawn from last weekend’s Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) after sustaining a knock to her hind leg, prompting trainer Jason Warren to adjust her spring campaign. “Where she has knocked her leg has all settled down, but she’s had to have a quiet week,” Warren told Racing.com. “A solid Manikato first-up over 1200 metres was going to be too much of an ask.” Benedetta, the daughter of Hellbent, is now set to resume in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on October 12. Warren had considered entering her in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) a week earlier but opted against it as there wouldn’t be sufficient time for a trial beforehand. The mare will then target the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1200m) on Cox Plate Day, with her sights set on the Group 1 Champions Sprint (1200m) on the final day of the Flemington Carnival. I Am Me. (Photo by Brett Holburt/Racing Photos) With Bella Nipotina confirmed as Ciaron Maher’s first runner in the $20 million Everest (1200m), his chances in the prestigious race could receive another boost if I Am Me performs well in The Shorts (1100m) at Randwick this Saturday. The two mares have faced off three times, with I Am Me finishing ahead on each occasion, most recently edging out Bella Nipotina to take victory in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) earlier this month. “She has been a very good horse, she hasn’t won a Group 1, but she has been Group 1 placed multiple times,” said Maher’s Sydney foreman, Johann Gerard-Dubord. “She won the Sydney Stakes last year, so we know she enjoys Randwick. She was probably a couple of lengths off the better ones [in the past], but she seems to have come back like she might have improved those couple of lengths and that could be enough.” I Am Me has secured an ideal draw in barrier two, with James McDonald set to ride. Gerard-Dubord’s only concern is the short turnaround between runs. “That’s probably the only question mark, two weeks between runs after such a good first-up effort, but she’s not showing any signs she has gone backwards,” he added. “She was very good first-up, she has drawn well on Saturday, she has found a dry track. She will be hard to beat again.” Horse racing news View the full article

With two days of selling in Book 6 yet to come, the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale has become the highest-grossing sale in the history of the auction house. When the gavel fell on hip 3634 not long after 6 p.m. Thursday evening, gross receipts totaled $405,519,500 (not including post-sale transactions) for the first 10 days of trade, breaking the previous high-water mark of $405,495,700 set in 2022. The cumulative average of $174,342 represented a healthy 7.3% bump over the corresponding figure from 2023, while the median price of $95,000 was up 11.8% over last year's figures. “An achievement of this magnitude is only accomplished by a community of people who share a passion for their horses and the sport of racing,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said. “We thank our breeders and sellers for the tremendous quality of horses they brought to market and the many buyers from around the world participating in this sale. We are grateful for their strong support of Keeneland.” Added Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy: “We enjoy collaborating with our customers to create the best sales environment possible. The amazing energy and excitement we saw surrounding Book 1 created momentum that continues to flow through week 2 of the sale. With two sessions still to go, we've got many nice horses yet to be sold.” A filly from the first crop of Airdrie Stud's Beau Liam (hip 3375) topped the second of two Book 5 sessions Thursday on a bid of $200,000 from Tom Tatum. The initiative, backed by $100k from the Regional Customer Facilities Program of the Labor Government and over $128k from the club, aims to improve the visitor experience during race days. “These upgrades to Stony Creek Racecourse reflect our commitment to ensuring regional racing clubs get the support they deserve. I look forward to seeing how these new upgrades benefit the club now and into the future” said Minister for Racing Anthony Carbines This year, Stony Creek Racecourse also set up a $319k automated irrigation system to enable consistent watering across the track while reducing the risk of leaks, overwatering, and pooling. Since 2014 till date, the Labor Government has allocated more than $840k towards racing events and development projects in the Stony Creek area. Moe Racecourse Upgrades The recent improvements at Moe Racecourse were made possible by a $1 million funding injection from the Labor government to enhance the visitor experience and better accommodate patrons and staff alike. The Moe Racing Club contributed over $2 million, while Racing Victoria chipped in with $300,000 for the upgrades to accommodate the venue’s 14 race meetings and 13 official trials aimed at boosting the club’s development and elevating the race day atmosphere. The upgrade features for the administration building include the race day services office, amenities areas, kitchenettes, cleaning rooms and a storeroom. It also includes a newly installed lift to improve access to the upper level of the administration building, housing two new function spaces with panoramic views of the entire racetrack. Since 2014, the Labor Government has put in over $1.3 million into the Moe Racing Club to help it thrive and grow in a manner. Member for Eastern Victoria for Tom McIntosh quoted “The thoroughbred racing industry in the Latrobe-Gippsland region generates more than $89 million for the Victorian economy and helps sustain over 700 full-time equivalent jobs in the region.” Minister Anthony Carbines highlighted the significance of race gatherings by stating that “The success of regional race meetings plays a vital role in the state’s economy and our investment helps ensure that racing in Moe continues to thrive.” “Our investment is helping to support the club’s growth with new and improved infrastructure, including the much-needed upgrade to the 50-year-old administration building.” The upgrades, to the Stony Creek and Moe Racecourses will enhance the amenities, for both spectators and participants alike while also contributing to the growth of the economy and backing Victorias regional racing sector. Thirteen hopeful jockeys have started their training as apprentices in the revamped Apprentice Jockey Training Program (AJTP) by Racing WA. Eleven trainees completed Racing WA’s 12-month Trackwork Rider Training Program (TWTP), which provides industry participants with nationally accredited training and helps them earn their Certificate III in Racing. The graduates of TWTP are now moving forward to pursue a Certificate IV in AJTP, which provides a pathway for riders to enhance their expertise and understanding. Sharyn Lancaster, the training manager for Racing WA, mentioned that the program offers support for up-and-coming jockeys. “The newly refined four-year apprentice jockey training program provides the perfect pathway and support for young riders on their journey to becoming senior jockeys,” she said. “The program allows the apprentices more time to ride with a claim, while they learn the practical and theoretical side of horse racing with a cohort of their fellow apprentices.” Peter Hall, from Racing WA Jockey Coach, mentioned that the first-year TWTP participants are thoroughly equipped for their apprenticeship journey. “We’ve seen success over the past few years from our apprentice program and look forward to growing the next generation of jockeys on the back of the track work riders’ program,” he said. Coach John Claite from Racing WA highlighted the range of career paths for the incoming apprentices. “It’s a big step for these young people, embarking on a new and diverse career in racing, and we all look forward to helping them grow on the road to success in the industry and in life,” he said. The latest group of trainees known as the AJTP cohort began their program in October, aiming to offer apprentices an organised and encouraging setting for enhancing their abilities and expertise. 18th September 2024 Introduction: On behalf of many owners who have approached me with grave concerns about the safety of our 3 poly tracks in NZ, namely Riccarton, Awapuni & Cambridge, I have been asked to carry out a private investigation, detailed below. In essence we are concerned about the carnage that has been exposed by way of inviting owner feedback through a Social Media Facebook page called Thoroughbred Chat NZ. For clarity, as the author of this report, I own 70 Thoroughbred horses located in the Hawkes Bay, Canterbury, Victoria and in NSW. 35 of them now two and three year olds in their racing development phase. Like most of those who contributed to this investigation, nearly all of us are supporters of poly track surfaces for winter racing, training and trial/jumpout education but only if they are safe and FIT FOR PURPOSE. We thank Winston Peters for his support of racing in bringing about outsourced funding to enable us to have this wet weather option for our high value horses. As part of the investigation I have spoken with horse ambulance staff, re-homers, track maintenance people with decades of experience, jockeys, trainers and the owners who have supported us in this investigation … but more particularly I have referred this matter to offshore & local experts [concussion tests included] and have received reports that have confirmed the concerns that were easily arrived at. The most concerning aspect of my inquiries is that nearly all contributors to my inquiry wanted to remain confidential because they fear authoritative reprisals for speaking out about the harm that these tracks have brought to our Jockeys and our horses. For them, I will respect their wishes in holding back numerous communications I have had with them to protect them because I have identified a number of actions that could be described as bullying and blame shedding, in one case a licence holder being threatened to have his licence withdrawn. In short, this is a serious issue of human and animal welfare. SUMMARY FINDINGS: There are a multitude of factors that we would like to bring to the attention of those responsible for the accumulative deaths and injuries to riders and our horses this last 2 years since the 3 poly tracks were installed. For the sake of simplicity, the primary concern is the growing number of horses that have broken their legs [various complications] on Raceday through lack of cushion and consistency on these tracks, many resulting in the horses being put down. The actual numbers are difficult to ‘finite’ because while the recorded deaths might say 7 for Riccarton that have occurred shortly after a racing, jumpout or trials event, many have returned to their stables to be found days later with debilitating injuries that, in some cases, make them unsuitable for re-homing and have had to be humanely destroyed. Other injuries are less sinister and result in our horses being referred to veterinary care, or spelled for long periods to allow suspected hairline fractures or injuries to heal. To put it more plainly, one Polytrack Manager in Ireland said that if their Irish bred horses were to run on a track like Riccarton, which I have now assessed, there would likely be 5 deaths per meeting. Much because their horses have lighter bone and aren’t trained on “concrete” surfaces to build up bone density. It was the growing number of these deaths and injuries that have underwritten the need for this investigation. Owners have been asking why their valuable horses are still falling victim to these unforgiving surfaces. In summary, the depth and consistency of the poly surfaces is grossly inadequate. On Sunday the 15th of September I undertook my own assessment of the Riccarton track having already heard of similar carnage at Awapuni and Cambridge tracks with their growing death & injury lists. What I found was shocking. Part qualified to have an opinion on this subject, I completed a unit in Soil Science at Lincoln University, I have completed many subdivisions requiring hard base roading [similar to the road mat used for polytracks] .. and I am a well accomplished rider myself who is familiar with the need for cushioned surfaces on which to gallop our horses at half pace and beyond, beach training my greatest preference in terms of ‘best’ surface conditions for cushion, consistency and sideway movement which is kind to a horses joints and fine bone structures. Particularly with young stock. I’m an animal lover as are most of the people who contributed to this investigation. As owners we have a close relationship with our riders, and their welfare is just as important to us. This is what I found at Riccarton to my horror. Using a pointed measuring stick with white markers at 50mm, 100mm and 200mm I walked the entire track which was 18 metres wide and nearly 1900 metres in circumference. I had a witness and ‘Secretary’ with me taking notes as I zig-zagged around the entire track taking up to 1000 measurements from inside out. The average depth or thickness of the poly overlay [on top of a rock hard road mat] was just 50mm, in old terms, 2 inches. If that wasn’t enough to set the bells ringing [now knowing why we have horse & jockey carnage], along the back straight I counted close to 30 patches per 100 metres where there was absolutely no poly cover to protect the horse from smashing its foot into that hard road mat surface. It improved into the front straight but then deteriorated again thereafter. Not much more needs to be said. This finding can only be reasonably described in conclusion as a SUICIDE TRACK, almost like playing Russian roulette with your horse, whether knowing its dangers or not prior to racing on it or galloping at speed during training, trial or jump-out events. This report in no way criticises the Track Manager at Riccarton or those at Cambridge & Awapuni because they can only work with the materials and machinery they’ve been given. Looking at these photos above it is patently clear that 50mm of cover is probably only a THIRD of what we need as a minimum when comparing poly tracks in Ireland, England and Australia. Polytracks in Ireland and England are on average 175mm in depth. In Australia, ranging from 100mm to 150mm with the better ones in that higher range or better. In fact, Alan Chapman at Riccarton has probably done a remarkable job with what he has been given. In conclusion of the summary findings, it is not difficult to arrive at a rough estimate that deaths and injuries on these poly surfaces compared to our grass surfaces [often poorly prepared too] is likely in the region of 400% higher with Darin Balcombe suggesting to me at the recent Roadshow that it was 200% up .. which this report doesn’t intend to argue over other than to say that in the authors opinion this is the biggest cover-up I’ve seen in racing in my 40 years of participating here in New Zealand. I’m ashamed of what I’ve found and my greatest sympathy goes out to the family of Taiki Yanagida who lost his life at Cambridge where the undersurface was so hard that it ripped his helmet clean off. I also pass on my sympathy to our top rider Lisa Allpress whose horse broke its leg underneath her after passing the line at Riccarton. Lisa sustained a broken back when hitting the hard rock track and spent time in hospital. The sub 1.22 times for mid grade horses on this track over 1400 metres tell us that the track is lightning hard. Putting concussion injuries & deaths aside, the other aspect that concerns us owners is now understanding why our Track Managers are unable to irrigate pre race meeting or even on exercise days because it will soften and compromise the road mat with the shallow depth of poly not able to stop it from permeating its way through. The significance of this is that the dust fibres and kickback can ultimately affect the respiratory system of our valuable horses, perhaps not a lot different to asbestos poisoning. Watering of poly tracks in Australia and Europe is often standardised to avoid this. SYSTEMIC FAILINGS: Given the serious nature of the findings it is not easy to point the finger at anyone in particular. For the purpose of this investigation I will kindly list those who may wish to share some responsibility for what has occurred this last two years in regard to human and horse losses, with injury occurrences inflated well beyond an acceptable SAFETY level. Racing Industry Board It is the authors understanding that Chief Stipendiary Steward John Oatham and his staff are responsible for checking racing surfaces before the start of each meeting, whether it’s grass or poly surface. What I saw and witnessed during my assessment on Sunday was a track most definitely NOT fit for purpose and it shocks me that Stipendiary control have not concluded the same. The photos above [of which I have many more] show a serious shortage of poly cover across the entire track and multiple areas of rock hard bare patches. On evidence, racing, trials or jump-outs should never have proceeded on this track. 2. Martin Collins .. polytrack installers [approx. $50 million project] These are dual hemisphere contractors in the construction of poly track racing venues. For them there is a DUTY OF CARE that they engineer, design and build a surface that is SAFE and fit for purpose for both horse and rider. 3. NZ Thoroughbred Racing [NZTR] As our code body there is a duty of care to protect our valuable horses and assure the safety of our riders through their incorporated club members who own and operate these poly track racing venues at Riccarton, Awapuni and Cambridge. Months ago I raised this serious issue of horse and rider carnage with both the CEO Bruce Sharrock and with Animal Welfare appointee Justine Slater, often copying in Darin Balcombe, or vice versa. In 3 of those written correspondences I received no response. I twice asked for the email contacts of our representative Board members at NZTR and, again, was ignored and not responded to. 4. Polytrack Clubs [Riccarton, Awapuni & Cambridge] I’m referring here to the Canterbury Jockey Club, RACE consortium and to the Cambridge Jockey Club who are now part of Waikato Racing. Again, they have a DUTY OF CARE to provide and prepare a track surface that is safe for horses and rider. This duty is part of their track maintenance program and the obvious challenges that come with that if resourcing Track Managers with an appropriate quantity of poly and the appropriate machinery to maintain it. During my investigation I received a claim that Tim Mills, CEO, reduced the quantity of poly supplied under contract at Riccarton so that the total spend would come under budget to please the CJC board members, something I hope is not true. 5. Trainers Representatives This investigation raised serious concerns that our representative trainers in each region hadn’t alerted their owners to the major problems resulting from these tracks with horse wastage [injuries & deaths] so high. When asking this question of why our South Island Trainers Representative hadn’t wanted to take this as an issue through to the Association and/or directly onto NZTR, it became clear that the trainer involved liked the small fields to run his ‘end of life’ horses on with less regard for animal welfare than perhaps other trainers. Money being the overriding factor in keeping his stable viable. 6. Programming Committees. The tragedy of the investigation findings is that the Programming Committees were clearly not aware of the poly track carnage where, in the main, they forced many trainers into racing their clients horses on the poly track because the program didn’t allow adequate opportunity for racing on the safer grass surfaces during the winter months. In Canterbury here, as an example, my understanding is that the secreted Programming Committee is made up of Tim Mills as Chair and Michael Pitman who is a big supporter of poly track racing according to feedback I got from him last Saturday through one of my 5 trainers here in Canterbury. Michael was unhappy that I had undertaken this investigation. OWNER REQUESTS: Cease racing on the 3 poly tracks in NZ immediately. Find solutions that will restore these valuable tracks to being safe & fit for purpose. Compensate victims for their losses. If the facts provided above are not already obvious to those responsible for safety in racing, I am happy to further contribute to any inquiry that might be aimed at starting the track rehabilitation process as soon as possible. As the author of this report I only but wish that we have 3 very good poly tracks here in NZ to enhance the opportunities to ALL stakeholders and trust that the views and evidences above are treated with the respect they deserve. Yours Sincerely, Colin Wightman RD 7, Rangiora 7477

Unless you've been under a rock recently, you are well aware Darley's Nyquist has been the buzz horse the last few weeks. It's for good reason. Just two Grade I races for 2-year-old fillies on dirt have been contested in North America so far this year, the Aug. 31 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga and the Sept. 7 Del Mar Debutante Stakes in California. Daughters of Nyquist–Immersive and Tenma–won both. Logically, success on the track should beget success in the sales ring. No where was that more evident than at the first few days of Keeneland's September sale last week, where Nyquist had not only his first career million-dollar yearling, but followed it up with another pair. Three millionaires in one sale is heady territory, indeed. Only Curlin, Gun Runner, and Into Mischief–all mainstays at that level–had more last week. “It's been gratifying to see, but it's been an amazing ride for sure,” said Darley's Darren Fox. “For us, he's the future. There's no two ways about it.” The leading freshman sire of 2020, the same year he got his first two 2-year-old Grade I winners, Nyquist has been among the top two spots in his sire crop ever since. He's held his own amongst all active sires as well, with an Eclipse champion, a Sovereign champion, a Breeders' Cup winner, 15 graded winners, and 26 black-type winners thus far. In 2024 alone, he's tied with Gun Runner for the top spot among all North American sires by number of Grade I winners for the current year. In addition to juvenile fillies Immersive and Tenma, he also has GI Ogden Phipps Stakes winner Randomized and GI Shoemaker Mile Stakes winner Johannes this year. For those keeping track, that's winners at the top level from ages two to four, seven to nine furlongs, on both dirt and turf, just in 2024. Click to see Nyquist at Darley Fox said the bay, a member of the first crop of stellar sire Uncle Mo, had his best book to date produce the 2-year-olds of this year. They were conceived following his breakout year as a freshman sire. “Nyquist is somewhat of a unicorn in terms of his demand,” said Fox. “In years two, three, and four, the market almost got stronger on him. It's very rare for a stallion to hold that performance every year. We've never sold a season for less than that original fee [$40,000]. His book for what are now 2-year-olds had 14 Grade I winners, 31 graded stakes winners, and 72 black-type fillies or mares in a book of 160. He had a lot of quality and we've had faith in him and certainly had high expectations. It's exciting to see that starting to play out.” In addition to breeders, Darley has supported Nyquist as well, with about 8-10 mares from the home band each year, said Fox. The aforementioned Immersive is a Godolphin homebred, as is 'TDN Rising Star' Knightsbridge. The latter is an undefeated 3-year-old, who won each of his two starts by open daylight and is back in training with Hall of Famer Bill Mott after turnout to recover from what was reported as bone bruising. Fox said the team is extremely optimistic about his future. There's also the anticipation of what other delights might be awaiting among the other juveniles, not to mention the younger crops. “It goes without saying Nyquist certainly represents the future lynchpin of our stallion roster,” said Fox. “He's been so good to us and we're certainly hugely excited as we have high hopes for him going forward. He's made an amazing start for us thus far. “He is a horse that has always experienced extraordinary demand. He's the bull's-eye in that there's nothing we have to compensate for or add to with him, so he fits a wide range of physicals.” Like his own sire, Nyquist was an undefeated Breeders' Cup winner at two and was named 2-year-old champion. But unlike his sire, who had to contend with a serious liver disease that kept him out of the Classics, Nyquist marched through the next spring unbeaten and went on to win the GI Kentucky Derby. “A champion 2-year-old stays undefeated through the Derby; the last time a horse did that, it was Seattle Slew in 1977! Nyquist's race record set incredible milestones. His sire line is an outcross and physically he fits a large pool of mares. He stamps them, gets nice horses that keep improving. They're rarely the finished articles–they're always improving and developing. They continue to race on. “He hits that sweet spot: they're precocious and yet they train on at three.” Immersive wins the first Grade I race of 2024 for 2-year-old fillies | Sarah Andrew Darley secured the breeding rights to Nyquist at the end of his juvenile season. Bred in Kentucky by Summerhill Farm, the now-11-year-old was picked up by Dennis O'Neill at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Florida March 2-year-olds in training sale for $400,000. Reddam Racing LLC campaigned him throughout his entire career with trainer Chief Stipe O'Neill. Fox said Darley now owns the horse outright. “He's a horse that works great with our broodmare band and he fits a large cross section of the mare population. We probably could have filled [his book] twice over this year at $85,000, and now he's hit a new stratosphere.” Jonabell Farm, home of the Darley stallions in America, has long held court among the upper echelon of top stallion farms in the U.S. and has masterfully incorporated generations of sire lines. Fox pointed to the legacy of the farm's brilliant Street Cry (Ire), a son of Machiavellian, who stood at Darley's Dalham Hall Stud near Newmarket. Street Cry plied his trade primarily in America and now Street Sense, his Derby-winning son, is currently in the Darley stallion barn, as are two of his sons, Maxfield and Speaker's Corner. It's not often four sire generations stand for the same organization. “There's a lot of pride and satisfaction about cultivating sire lines. We hope Nyquist continues that, mirrors what Street Cry has done,” said Fox. “Putting a son of Nyquist's in our stallion barn would be the dream. The sire line has shown how potent it is, how good it is with American racing. We're very keen to have some colt who hits the mark to come back home and take up duties.” The post Saturday Sires: Nyquist appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
