  1. SA Derby winner Coco Sun. (Photo by George Sal/Racing Photos) Last season’s Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) winner, Coco Sun, is set for her second spring outing in Saturday’s Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield. Trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, the four-year-old mare returned with a solid seventh-place finish in a Benchmark 100 (1400m) at Caulfield last month, finishing 2.8 lengths behind winner Another Wil. “I was happy with her return. She ran a really solid last furlong and didn’t get a lot of room,” Calvin McEvoy told Racing.com. “Blake (Shinn, jockey) was really pleased with her though; he could only really give her one hit with the stick. “It was a good return run over seven furlongs for a staying mare. Our main aim is the Caulfield Cup, but her form needs to warrant a go at that of course. “We’d just love a little bit of rain around (before Saturday); she goes to another level when she can get her toe in. We think she’s going good enough to be competitive, we’re expecting a nice run from her up to the 1800 metres.” Horse racing news View the full article

  5. Group 1 winner, Overpass. Photo: bradleyphotos.com.au Overpass is gearing up for an exciting spring campaign after winning a 900-metre trial at Rosehill on Monday morning. The gelding, who has earned over $7.7 million in prize money, hasn’t raced since his victory in The Quokka (1200m) in April. Trainer Bjorn Baker confirmed that Overpass will kick off his campaign in Sydney before heading to Melbourne for the Group 1 Champions Sprint (1200m) at Flemington, followed by a possible trip west for the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m), a race he won last year. “He’s going to run fresh on Everest day in either the main race or the Sydney Stakes, and I was thinking, from there, it’s a nice break into the Champions Sprint at Flemington,” Baker told Racing.com. “He’s won down the straight before, winning the Inglis race, and I reckon he’s going better than ever. “His trial was really good, and he looks to have come back well. “He’ll stay up here for the time being and go to Everest day, but I wouldn’t mind looking at the Flemington Sprint, and then I’d love to get back to the Winterbottom.” Horse racing news View the full article
  6. Continuing spirited trade for yearlings by young stallions, Monday's seventh session of the Keeneland September Sale was led by freshman sire McKinzie, who has his first crop of 2-year-olds this season. Leading the fray was Hip 2197, a colt that brought $475,000 from Reeves Thoroughbred Racing. The second highest priced yearling of the session, also the day's topping filly, was Hip 2116, by Maxfield. Offered by Runnymede Farm, the daughter of Marwa (GB) was purchased by AMO Racing USA. At the conclusion of Monday's session, a total of 288 head sold for gross receipts of $25,234,000, up 2.57% from one year ago. The median was $70,000 (+7.69%) while the average was $87,618 (+8.62%). The gross through seven days of selling was $361,642 for 1454 head sold, up 5% from 2023. RNA's rose to 83 from 67 last year. Monday's leading consignor was Gainesway, which sold 25 yearlings for $4,082,000. The session's leading buyer was Kenny McPeek, agent, who acquired six yearlings for $935,000. Fortune Runs Deep for Reeves Consigned by his breeder Gainesway Thoroughbreds, the colt is out of SP Ruby Trust (Smart Strike), a daughter of Grade III winner Queen ofthe Catsle (Tale of the Cat). Agent Jimmy Gladwell signed the ticket on the session-topping colt. “I told Jimmy to tell me which ones were the must-haves. And this one was a must have,” said Dean Reeves. “He was drop-dead gorgeous. I also like the Smart Strike on the bottom side. I've always neem a fan of that family.” He continued, “His pedigree wasn't over-the-top like they are in Book 1, but I think as a physical, he was the type of horse we look for. We can't really get into that $1-million price range, but if we can find a horse that is a really solid physical and the dam has [some black-type], then we feel like we have done as good as we can do.” Through seven sessions, the Gainesway stallion was represented by 30 yearlings that sold (through the ring) for gross receipts of $6.69 million. His yearlings averaged $223,000 with a median price of $162,500. The top-priced yearling by the Grade I winning stallion was Hip 644, out of Take Charge Angel, that brought $950,000 from agent Donato Lanni on behalf of SF/Starlight/Madaket. “The stallion was a big draw because he has done really well,” explained Reeves. “All the horses by McKinzie that we looked at looked really good. He is putting out some really good foals. He was very accomplished on the track. He won the big races. He was a quality runner and I like to go to some stallions that have really shown it on the track before they retired.” According to Reeves, the colt's breeder Gainesway will stay in for 25% on the colt. “We were thrilled that Gainesway wanted to come in on the McKinzie,” Reeves confirmed. “I respect Antony Beck and everyone Gainesway. Any time somebody like them wants to stay in on a horse, they must like him. It would be an honor to have them as partners.” During Monday's session, Reeves also secured Hip 2223, a colt by Liam's Map. Consigned by Claiborne Farm, the Apr. 30 foal is out of unraced Side of Sass (Mineshaft), a half-sister to Grade II winner Dynamic One (Union Rags). This represents the Phipps family of champion juvenile filly Storm Flag Flying (Storm Cat) through GI CCA Oaks heroine My Flag (Easy Goer). “[Gladwell] really loved Liam's Map,” said Reeves. “That yearling was another one that we felt was as good as the McKinzie. Danny [Gargan] really liked the McKinzie and Miguel Clement liked the Liam's Map, so it really worked out for us. We can try and keep the trainers happy.” In all, Reeves purchased six yearlings, including a trio in partnership, led by Hip 955, a colt by Good Magic, purchased by Jones/Everett/Reeves, Vekoma, Belmar, Pine and Legendary. In partnership, Reeves also purchased Hip 540, a colt by Good Magic who brought $550,000 and Hip 501, a Charlatan colt that realized $500,000. “We took 25% of some of those horses,” said Reeves. “That way we could get up into higher price range. We do a lot of business with the partners of those horses. That's been the fun part for Patti and I. Partnering with them takes a lot of the pressure off. So we were able to buy some of the horses we might not have been able to buy without these partners. It made sense.” Reeves confirmed that he would also take on partners on Hip 1012, a colt by Good Magic purchased on Day 4. “We had to stretch every time,” Reeves said when asked about the strength of the middle market. “It's been very competitive. We had another one we tried to get Monday but we just couldn't keep going.” Despite all the buying activity at Keeneland last week, Reeves was notably absent. However, he had a very good reason with Porta Fortuna (Ire) (Caravaggio), a filly he owns in partnership, running at Leopardstown in last Saturday's G1 Matron Stakes, a 'Win and You're In' for the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Returning off a two-month break, the Donnacha O'Brien-trainee collected her third straight Group 1 score following victories in Royal Ascot's Coronation Stakes and Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket. Despite her free entry into the Filly & Mare test at Del Mar, Reeves said it looks likely that the four-time Group 1-winner will face the boys at Del Mar in her next start. “This is some kind of talented filly,” he said. “This is the third race in a row that I went over to watch her run. She is so determined and so talented.” “We go in with a lot of confidence, and now we're going to run against the boys in the Breeders' Cup Mile. That'll be another huge challenge for her but she is a special filly.” The post McKinzie Colt Sets the Mark at Keeneland September Monday appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 7. Trainer Mick Price. (Photo by Brett Holburt/Racing Photos) After finishing a disappointing eighth in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) last weekend, the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Bustling is set to continue his campaign in the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on September 28. The three-year-old gelding is aiming to get back on track for a start in The Everest (1200m). “He was very disappointing given he trialled so well,” Price told Racing.com following Saturday’s race. “He was a bit funny behind Sunday morning, not trotting out 100 percent behind, so we have a bit of work to do on him to see if we can get him cherry (ripe). “We will stick to our plan, however, and run him in two weeks’ time and then hopefully into The Everest.” Bustling is currently a +3300 winning chance with horse racing bookmakers for The Everest. 10. Much-respected Maryland racing official Georgeanne Hale will receive the Jane Goldstein Exemplary Leadership Award during the third annual Horse Racing Women's Summit in Arcadia, CA, Sept. 25-27. “I am honored and surprised to receive the Jane Goldstein Leadership Award,” said Hale. “To be honored by an organization as great as the Horse Racing Women's Summit is something I never would have dreamed of. I am lucky and grateful to work in an industry that I love and have supported for so many years. Thank you to the HRWS board for nominating me for such a distinguished award.” Hale began her career with the Maryland Jockey Club in 1984 as an assistant racing secretary and after taking on the role of racing secretary at Timonium in 1986, became the first and only woman to serve in that capacity at a major North American racetrack when promoted by the Maryland Jockey Club in 2000. Hale has been instrumental in helping to build Maryland's major racing events, including the GI Preakness Stakes, the GI Black-Eyed Susan Stakes and the Maryland Million series while also building professional relationships across the country. A staunch supporter of Thoroughbred aftercare, Hale works closely with Maryland's Beyond The Wire program as well as the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. “Georganne has dedicated her career–and her heart–to elevating the standards of our sport. This award is a testament to her hard work and her unwavering integrity,” said Stacie Clark-Rogers, Operations Consultant of the TAA. “She doesn't just lead; she inspires. She doesn't just push for better; she lifts everyone up along the way.” The award, named for ground-breaking turf publicist Jane Goldstein who was recognized for the inaugural presentation in 2022, is just one reflection of the HRWS core pillars to Engage, Elevate and Invest in the women of horse racing. “What started as an opportunity to celebrate an incredibly important woman of racing–Jane Goldstein–has become an annual opportunity for the HRWS to honor the accomplishments of a woman in our industry each year.” said Shona Rotondo, HRWS Marketing Committee Chair. “This award recognizes those who have dedicated their lives to horse racing and to forging a path for women to come. We are thrilled to take a moment to recognize Georganne this year for all that she has accomplished in her career.” Tickets for this year's Horse Racing Women's Summit can be purchased online through Sept. 18. 11. 'TDN Rising Star' Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna) drew gate six in a field of eight and was made the 4-5 morning-line favorite when post positions were drawn Monday for Saturday's GI Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing in suburban Philadelphia. Trainer Ken McPeek will once again give Brian Hernandez, Jr. a leg up on Thorpedo Anna, whose victories in the GI Kentucky Oaks, GI Acorn Stakes and GI CCA Oaks have virtually clinched the 3-year-old filly championship with better than two months of racing left in 2024. She covered herself in glory in her most recent outing, charging home to fall just short in the Aug. 24 GI Travers Stakes at Saratoga. Thorpedo Anna will carry a two-pound penalty and top weight of 126 pounds as a winner of a top-level race beyond a mile, as will Power Squeeze (Union Rags), who comes into the Cotillion off a last-stride success in the GI Alabama Stakes at Saratoga Aug. 17. Irad Ortiz, Jr., who guided the chestnut to a victory in the Cash Run Stakes back in January, takes over at the controls from Javier Castellano from the inside barrier. Gun Song (Gun Runner) looks to give her sire a second Cotillion winner in three years, and the GII Black-Eyed Susan Stakes winner was most recently the all-the-way winner of the local prep, the Aug. 24 Cathryn Sophia Stakes. John Velazquez rides from the seven hole, while 'Rising Star' Tarifa (Bernardini) stretches back out to two turns off a runner-up effort in Ellis Park's Audubon Oaks over seven panels Aug. 11. The GI Pennsylvania Derby has lured a field of 11, headed by the streaking Dragoon Guard (Arrogate), who looks to give the Brad Cox barn a second consecutive win in the race following Saudi Crown (Always Dreaming) last year. Florent Geroux, who piloted Saudi Crown, has the call from post position seven. 'TDN Rising Star' Unmatched Wisdom (Cairo Prince) won the first three races of his career, but never reached contention in the GI Travers Stakes and finished a distant seventh. A more positive ride can be expected from Flavien Prat from the eight, while GI Preakness Stakes upsetter Seize the Grey (Arrogate) can be expected to race prominently from the two hole. Stronghold (Ghostzapper), neck winner of the GI Santa Anita Derby and a latest runner-up to Dragoon Guard in the GIII Indiana Derby, will have to overcome the outside alley, while Timeout (Curlin) and Protective (Medaglia d'Oro) represent Pennsylvania Derby-winning trainers Bill Mott and Todd Pletcher, respectively. 13. Six races at Cambridge tonight will kick start another busy harness racing week. Auckland’s Friday meeting will see the 2YO Pacing Fillies battle it out in the $107,000 Group 1 Caduceus Club Classic and the return of Merlin and co in the $40,000 Spring Cup while the 3YO Trotting Fillies will be in action at Addington in the $60,000 Macca Lodge Sires’ Stakes Classique. Big wide open fields will be the order of the day at Motukarara on Sunday – among the highlights will be the $40,000 D G Jones Banks Peninsula Trotting Club and two Blue September Invited Drivers Challenge races. Poutama enjoying success at Cambridge’s Tuesday meetings By Brigette Solomon Pukekohe based trainer Andre Poutama heads south with three horses tonight in the hopes he can continue his good vein of form at Cambridge Raceway. Since the shift of Cambridge meetings to Tuesdays at the beginning of August, Poutama has trained four winners, and a further five placings from just three runners out of his stable – Desert Dawn, Ordained, and Potter. “The team has been racing well, Ordained in particular seems to really enjoy the Tuesday meetings” says Poutama. Poutama lines up two runners in the first race of the night, the Christmas at The Raceway Tickets On Sale Now Mobile Pace over 2200 metres for Junior Drivers. In the six horse field, Louie V Tonne, driven by Nate Delaney, starts from the ace draw meanwhile Potter, starts from barrier six and is driven tonight by Harrison Orange. “Potter looks to be the one to beat on paper,” says Poutama, “Harrison drives him again tonight and we’re developing a good association with him, he’s had four drives for us for two wins and two placings so far.” The four-year-old gelding has been driven by Orange in all three runs this campaign, all at Cambridge, for a fresh up fifth followed by two second placings. His most recent placing on August 27 saw him just 0.7 lengths off race winner Slots. “He’s been working well and racing well, and I think he’d have to be the best of my runners for the night.” In Race 4, the TFS Horse Transport Handicap Trot, Poutama trains and drives Ordained who is the sole started off the front line. A last start winner when driven by Harrison Orange last week, the gelding was slow away from his 10 metre handicap settling on the fence toward the rear of the field. Orange was quick to capitalise on the gap created by a galloping runner outside him, taking the space to end up in the one out one back position where he remained until making his run at the 600 metre mark. Heading the field upon turning into the straight, Ordained never looked threatened and won by a 2.5 length margin. “He’s ended up in the higher rated trot tonight despite meeting criteria for the lower rated trot which is disappointing but out of my control,” says Poutama, “in saying that he has come through his run good and is racing well and doing everything right.” “I really can’t fault him and he seems to be loving Tuesday racing.” Alongside his own runners, Poutama also drives the Stephen Doody-trained Jahi in Race 3, the IRT Your Horse Our Passion Mobile Pace. “I haven’t driven him before, but he looks to be one of the better ones in the field,” says Poutama, “he has gate speed if we choose to use it and should be capable of crossing the runners inside him.” The three-year-old placed third at his previous two starts at Cambridge and looks to start the race as one of the favoured runners. Race 1 gets underway at 5.03pm. View the full article

  17. The Horseracing and Safety Integrity Authority (HISA) made it clear on Monday that by Oct. 16, it intends to ask the United States Supreme Court to step in and decide the current HISA constitutionality conflict that exists because of clashing opinions out of two separate federal appeals courts. The move potentially sets up a final say, perhaps as early as 2025, on a legal showdown that has split factions of the Thoroughbred industry since HISA's initial passage in 2020. One week after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit shot down a request for a rarely granted rehearing that the HISA Authority and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) had asked for to review the Fifth Circuit's recent opinion that HISA's enforcement provisions are unconstitutional, the HISA Authority, on Sept. 16, requested that the court hold off on issuing its mandate for that decision. “Pending disposition of a certiorari petition to be filed by Oct. 16, the Court should stay its mandate in full or at least as to operation of the judgment outside the Fifth Circuit,” the Authority's filing stated. “In the alternative, the Court should enter an administrative stay for at least 21 days to permit the Authority to seek stay relief from the Supreme Court and to allow for the Circuit Justice's consideration before the mandate issues,” the filing stated. The Fifth Circuit panel opined July 5, 2024, that not all of HISA is constitutional, while a Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals panel opined in a different case Mar. 3, 2023, that Congressional changes to the law in 2022 made HISA completely constitutional. When two federal appeals courts differ in their opinions like that, it's called a “circuit split,” and the Supreme Court generally takes heightened interest in resolving such conflicts. The 3 1/2-year-old underlying lawsuit that led to the Fifth Circuit's opinion is spearheaded by the National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (NHBPA) and 12 of its affiliates. The losing legal entities in the Sixth Circuit case, led by the states of Oklahoma, West Virginia and Louisiana, have also asked the Supreme Court to have another look at the conflicting appeals court opinions. An initial attempt by those losing parties to get the Supreme Court involved failed earlier this year, but that was before the Fifth Circuit's conflicting opinion had been issued. Eric Hamelback, the chief executive officer of the NHBPA, told TDN on Monday that his organization opposes any delay to having the Fifth Circuit issue its mandate. “Horsemen and women deserve relief provided from the Fifth Circuit's opinion,” Hamelback wrote in an email. “If this case reaches the Supreme Court, that process could take months or even years to reach a decision. HISA should not be able to run roughshod over the constitutional rights of horsemen while we wait on that decision. The Fifth Circuit's ruling was clear that HISA's enforcement policies are unconstitutional, and the Authority should respect that decision and the rights of horsemen.” The HISA Authority, in its filing, argued the opposite, that a stay of the Fifth Circuit mandate was necessary because both defendants and the public would suffer “irreparable harm” without one. “Every other federal court that has resolved a challenge to the amended Act has reached the same conclusion: HISA is constitutional,” the Authority's Sept. 16 court filing stated. “But this Court recently contradicted that consensus, holding that HISA's enforcement provisions facially violate the private-nondelegation doctrine. “Whatever the merits of that outlier decision, it should not trample other courts' considered judgments pending disposition of the Authority's forthcoming petition for a writ of certiorari,” the Authority's filing stated. “Given the acknowledged circuit split on a question of undisputed legal and practical importance, all agree that Supreme Court review is likely (if not a foregone conclusion). There is at least a 'fair prospect' that the Supreme Court will agree with [a Sixth Circuit] view that Congress's amendment to HISA permits the FTC to exercise more than adequate oversight in multiple (if not all) applications to overcome this facial constitutional challenge,” the Authority's filing stated. “And beyond the serious blow to separation-of-powers and comity concerns, allowing the Court's decision to take effect would plunge horseracing back into a confusing web of varying enforcement protocols, disrupt the entrenched expectations of a national industry that has adjusted to the reforms over two-plus years, and endanger the athletes who have been protected by the successful programs Congress directed,” the Authority's filing stated. 18. Trainer George Boughey is considering a trip to Kentucky with Soprano (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) following her third-place finish in the G1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on Saturday. The Highclere-owned filly has thrived on a busy campaign and produced what was arguably a career-best effort when beaten just a length and a half behind Porta Fortuna (Ire) (Caravaggio) at Leopardstown, doing well under the circumstances to finish as close as she did after racing freely in the early stages. Already a two-time winner in 2024, having won the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot and the G3 Prix de Lieurey at Deauville, Soprano's placed effort when returning to the top table in the Matron fully justified the belief her trainer has always had in her, with a change of tactics said to be the key to her recent improvement. “She's for a long time threatened to be a Group 1 filly and I was slightly scratching my head for a large part of her career so far,” said Boughey. “I think a change of tactics has been a huge help to her going forward. She was given a brilliant ride by Billy [Loughnane] on Saturday to get the position she did from a wide gate and she possibly used a bit of juice to get there, so I'm very proud of her and it was good to see her back at that level. “Huge credit has to go to Charles Eddery, who rides her every day at home and travelled her over to Ireland the other day. He knows her inside out and was very bullish that she'd be in the shake-up against some very good fillies. Not many win four Group 1s, as Porta Fortuna has this year, and there was a Classic winner [Fallen Angel] in second, so she's mixing it with the very best.” Considering future plans, Boughey added, “She may well go to Keeneland for the QEII on October 12. It's a nine-furlong, three-year-old fillies only Grade I that is worth just shy of $1 million, so that's a possible plan for her next.” The post Further International Raids on the Radar for Thriving Soprano appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 21. Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-bred horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Tuesday's Observations features a half-sister to a Group 1-winning sire. 13.55 Punchestown, Mdn, €18,000, 2yo, f, 7fT BEYOND DREAMS (IRE) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) is a rare Michael Tabor runner for the Dermot Weld stable and as a half-sister to the dual group 1-winning sire Zoustar (Aus) has plenty to commend her. She is in deep on debut against Ballydoyle's Mint Candy (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), the first foal out of the six-times grade I winner Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) who boasts a smart level of form in maidens and has the experience edge. 22. The entries of two horses, one entered in the GI Pennsylvania Derby and other in the GI Cotillion S., that appeared to be hopelessly outclassed were not accepted Monday by the Parx racing office. Both are trained by Daniel Siculietano and owned by Salvatore Rizzo's JR Jewel Stables. The Pennsylvania Derby horse, Carry Grant (Brody's Cause) was coming off a race where he finished second in a $16,000 maiden claimer at Delaware Park. The Cotillion horse Molly Malone (Mendelssohn) won a $10,000 maiden claimer at Parx in her last start. “(The Parx racing office) told me their form does not fit the races and that they're going to take them both out,” Siculietano said. “It didn't make me upset. It is what is it. I was going to take a shot. It's OK. We'll just run them where they can be competitive. They said they'd be taking both horses out of their races because they don't fit in these races. They're probably right that they don't fit. We were pushing the envelope. That's horse racing.” Despite the horse's lackluster credentials, had they been allowed to run the owner was guaranteed to make some money, no matter where they finished. In both races, any horse that finished sixth or worst would still earn $15,000. The race cost $1,000 to enter and $4,000 to start. A few other smaller fees add up to about $500, meaning even a dead-last showing would have earned the owner about $9,500. “The ($9,500) more played into the equation with the owner than with me,” the 63-year-old trainer said in an interview conducted before he learned that his horses had been withdrawn from the races. “He became adamant that we should run. My reasons for wanting to enter was that if both horses showed up they'd have a chance to fool some people.” Siculietano said both horses were coming into the weekend at their very best. “Molly Malone is a horse that never gives up and keeps on fighting,” he said. “She has been training like a beast. We got Carry Grant from another trainer and he was not in very good shape. We've worked with him all summer and he's turned out to be a monster of a little horse. If he shows up he'll have a chance. You never know. Anything can happen on any given day in a horse race.” Siculietano has been training for less than two years and has a record of 6-for-97. He said he was a general contractor before obtaining his trainer's license. 24. Bill Knauf, who has served Monmouth Park in a variety of roles–most recently its vice president of business development–for over a quarter-century, will take up the position of president and general manager of The Maryland Jockey Club Inc., a new 501(c) (4) organization to manage and operate Thoroughbred horse racing in the state. “We have found the perfect person to lead Maryland's groundbreaking efforts to reimagine and renew the racing experience,” said Greg Cross, chairman of the Maryland Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority (MTROA). “Bill not only has operating experience, but the knowledge to embrace and deploy cutting-edge technology to increase wagering and profitability.” Knauf will serve as a consultant to the MTROA until he begins his new position on Jan. 1, 2025, and he will also play a key role in the redevelopment of Pimlico Race Course, which is now getting underway, and support the running of the GI Preakness Stakes. “Maryland racing has a storied history, and the passion of everyone from horsemen to fans runs deep,” said Knauf. “I look forward to helping drive the evolution of Pimlico Racecourse and the Preakness. I'd like to thank Chairman Greg Cross, Executive Director Marc Broady, Acting CEO Corey Johnsen and the MTROA Board for this exciting and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I also thank Dennis Drazin, chairman of Monmouth Park, and the great leadership team I worked with for the last 26 years. Monmouth will always remain special to me.” A native of Schenectady, NY and a graduate of Tufts University and the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program, Knauf joined Monmouth in 1998. He was the chief liaison between the track and Breeders' Cup when Monmouth hosted the event in 2007 and has been directly involved with the presentation of the GI Haskell Stakes, which drew better than 38,000 racegoers to the Jersey Shore oval this past July. In addition to racing and wagering, Knauf will also develop and implement plans for catering, entertainment, events and more at Pimlico, helping fulfill a plan intended to create a hub of economic activity in Baltimore's Park Heights community and create a foundation for the future of Maryland horseracing. Maryland racing will be conducted at Laurel Park until renovations at Pimlico are complete. However, the 2025 Preakness–the 150th running of the race –will be held at Pimlico, and the 2026 event will be held at Laurel. The post Knauf Tabbed To Lead Maryland Jockey Club Inc.
