  5. It wouldn't rise to the level of a horse like Dare and Go stunning Cigar in the 1996 renewal, but it was a surprise of similar magnitude in Saturday's GI FanDuel Pacific Classic, as Calumet Farm's MIXTO (c, 4, Good Magic–Musical Mystery, by Concerto) plugged on late and grabbed an exceptionally game Full Serrano (Arg) (Full Mast) to earn a fees-paid berth into the field for the GI Breeders' Cup Classic at odds of 22-1 some may have considered underlaid. Mixto, who owned just a maiden victory from 13 starts prior to Saturday, was aggressively ridden by Kyle Frey from the outside stall and was put into the race immediately, forcing the pace through reasonable early fractions of :23.42 and :46.95 as favored Dr. Venkman (Ghostzapper) enjoyed a beautiful trip from just behind the pacesetters in third. Full Serrano still had Mixto breathing down his neck after six furlongs in 1:11.62 and was still going great guns turning for home, with Frey now hard at work aboard Mixto. Still battling gamely into the final furlong, Full Serrano began to shorten stride and began to look for the wire, and Mixto was along in the final few jumps to cause the upset. Reincarnate (Good Magic) wasn't far away in third, while Dr. Venkman, who had to alter course, but was never a true winning chance, settled for fourth. Sales history: $140,000 2yo '22 OBSAPR. 12. It's well-known around the racetrack that a good horse can come from anywhere. Saturday's eighth race at Saratoga, a seven-furlong maiden special weight race run on the dirt, featured a field of nine. No surprise that eight of the starters were bred in Kentucky. The only one that wasn't was Dapper Moon (Malibu Moon), a Louisiana-bred. But he had no problem conquering his fashionably-bred rivals from the Blue Grass State, winning the race by five lengths for trainer Dallas Stewart and owner Murray Valene. “He doesn't know where he was born,” Valene said. “That's all I race, Louisiana-breds.” It was Valene's second time winning at Saratoga with a Louisiana-bred. The first was Designer Legs (Graeme Hall), the winner of the 2013 GII Adirondack Stakes. Dapper Moon was second in his debut in what Stewart said was a promising race. “I really liked this horse,” Stewart said. “To win at seven furlongs in Saratoga, that's a big move. He's a colt that ran second first time out and a colt that has a lot going for him. He won very professionally today.” Ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr., Dapper Moon stalked the early pace from third, made a three-wide move on the far turn and took off from there to win by five lengths over Guns Loaded (Gun Runner). Tap Into This (Tapit), the 3-2 favorite, finished third in what was a big performance considering he broke well behind the rest of the field. Stewart said that Dapper Moon is not a particularly big horse and that his weight is something he has had to keep an eye on. “We've always been concerned about his weight,” he said. “We're always looking to get more calories into his body.” Dapper Moon was the third maiden winner at the meet for Stewart. “I have a lot of nice horses and a lot of great owners,” Stewart said. “They spent some money, so I'm trying to give them a little return.” Stewart added it's possible that Dapper Moon could make his next start in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Dapper Moon was purchased for $130,000 at OBS April. Sixth race maiden winner Laurice (Bolt d'Oro) was purchased at the same sale for $460,000. Prior to the OBS sale, Dapper Moon was an RNA at the 2023 Texas Thoroughbred Association Yearling sale. Dapper Moon paid $10.80 and completed the seven furlongs in 1:25.04. #4 Dapper Moon open up in the end to win R8 at Saratoga under @RSantana_jr for trainer @dallasstewart3! DAPPER MOON (c, 2, Malibu Moon–Fashioned Gem, by Old Fashioned), second over track and trip on debut July 20, left the stalls as the 4-1 third choice and quickly had something to say about the early pace. Ricardo Santana, Jr. settled the gray into a clear third behind longshot Lucas's Mischief (Into Mischief), who was hounded by Guns Loaded (Gun Runner ) through :22.79 and :46.62 first fractions. The pacesetter waved the white flag on the far turn as Guns Loaded continued on and Dapper Moon spun wide, the latter rallying down the lane for a clear-cut five-length victory. Dapper Moon hails from the same family as late 90s MGSW sprinter sensation Kelly Kip (Kipper Kelly). His dam has a yearling Practical Joke yearling colt who sold at the recent Texas yearling sale for $20,000 to Jeff Claman. Sales History: $79,000 RNA Ylg '23 TTAYRL; $130,000 2yo '24 OBSAPR. 13. Darwin trainer Chris Pollard celebrated victory in the $35,000 Kununurra Cup (1600m) at the remote WA location on Saturday Darwin trainer Chris Pollard had cause to celebrate on Saturday when eight-year-old gelding A Big Chance won the $35,000 Kununurra Cup (1800m). Ridden by NSW jockey Michael Heagney, who has spent the past four months riding in WA, the son of Shinzig – $7.50 with the top Australian bookmakers – pounced at the 400m approaching the home turn before powering away to win by 3.6 lengths. Second behind Tayarn Halter’s Raffalli ($5.50) exiting the home straight the first time, A Big Chance settled in fourth place before clicking into gear to provide the NT with its third straight Cup win, Lunch Session (2022) and Boom Boom Sweet (2023). For Pollard, who won the $135,000 Palmerston Sprint (1200m) with Early Crow during the Darwin Cup Carnival in early August, he finally tasted success with A Big Chance after 14 attempts. When trained by Jan Aitkenhead in Brisbane, the gelding had 64 starts for six wins and 11 minor placings. Pollard’s Corden ($5.50), Roy Rogers’ Mr Mt Walker ($3.60) and Boom Boom Sweet ($2.90 fav) finished second, third and fifth in the Cup – Raffalli was fourth and Petrick’s Dip Me Lid ($12) finished at the tail in sixth place. For Pollard, a regular visitor to Kununurra, he now boasts 15 wins and 26 minor placings from 79 starters after three wins on Saturday. Boomerconi ($31) stormed home late to get the cash over 1100m (RTG48) and Kumicho ($3.90) finished strongly over 1100m (RTG56) with Perth jockey Austin Galati in the saddle. Although Boom Boom Sweet disappointed in the Cup, Alice Springs trainer Petrick – the winner of four races last Saturday – still landed a double on the second day of racing at Kununurra. With Alice Springs jockey Paul Denton aboard, Throw At Da Stumps ($1.65 fav) made it back-to-back wins over 1200m (RTG62) and Princess Pancakes ($2.60 fav) bounced back after running second the previous week to salute over 1350m (RTG56). Albany trainer Roy Rogers made it a winning double in as many weeks when Playin’ Hardball ($3.50), ridden by Tweed Heads jockey Chris Taylor – who landed a treble on Day 1 – prevailed over 1600m (RTG56) and Ezelove ($7), with Galati on board, left it late before saluting over 1350m (RTG48). Meanwhile, Darwin trainer Phil Cole had two wins at the Betoota meeting in Queensland on Saturday with Awen ($1.60 fav), ridden by Alice Springs apprentice Dakota Gillett, and Turnstar ($4), ridden by Barcaldine apprentice Kelsy Lenton. Cole trained the first three horses across the line in the race won by Turnstar with Lord Fenrir ($5) and Preconi ($1.60 fav) filling the minor placings, while Saccharo ($2) was fourth in the Betoota Cup (1600m). 14. Cicero Farms homebred Hope Road (Quality Road) rolled in the GIII Torrey Pines Stakes at Del Mar on Saturday afternoon and proved her two prior five-length wins for trainer Bob Baffert were no fluke. Beginning in the care of John Sadler, last summer at the seaside oval the then-juvenile was the runner-up twice against maiden special weights before being well-beaten in the GI Del Mar Derby. Making the barn switch in September, the filly broke through with a strong performance at Santa Anita in mid-June to start her 3-year-old season and then scampered up the class ladder against optional claimers going six furlongs on the main track at Del Mar. Set to check two turns off her to-do list and at fifty cents on the dollar here, Hope Road was sent on her way, but before she reached the first turn, longshot Soho (City of Light) bullied her way from the inside to make the pace. The bay was content to use the speed horse as a target and when the leader began to fade before the far turn it was go time. The Baffert trainee kicked in the afterburner and sailed home a winner under a hand ride by Juan Hernandez. Nothing Like You (Malibu Moon) completed the other half of the stable's exacta. “I knew there was a lot of speed in the race,” said Bob Baffert, who celebrated his eighth win in Torrey Pines. “You don't know until they do it but at the three-eighths pole I thought she'll get it. She settled very nice. Juan [Hernandez] rides these horses with so much confidence I don't say anything to him. So he's on his own.” Pedigree Notes: With over a 1,000 foals of racing age, the longstanding Quality Road (by Elusive Quality) now has 42 graded stakes winners to his credit. Her dam's first registered foal, the winner has an unraced 2-year-old half-sister in Freedom Song (Medaglia d'Oro) and a weanling half-brother (Uncle Mo). 21. You know how the quote reads directly from the handicapper's Bible, “Behold the pale horse with controlling speed.” Heeding that warning arrives once again on Sunday. Halfway through the three-day holiday weekend of Thoroughbred racing, Saratoga and Del Mar card graded races. The Spa's GI Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes, the penultimate 'Win and You're In' pass to the Breeders' Cup Classic, sets the tone with a myriad of intriguing storylines woven into this fleece as a half dozen entries will try to catch that aforementioned 'pale horse' Arthur's Ride (Tapit). The 4-year-old white knight was downright sensational in the GI Whitney Stakes at the Spa Aug. 3 when he skimmed the mud from start to finish and cleared by 2 1/4 lengths. Trained by Bill Mott, the colt is looking for his third win of the meet and jockey Junior Alvarado has one job, send him. The Gold Cup pursuers are an eclectic bunch when it comes to running style, but none of them possess first call quickness like the 80 cents on the dollar morning line favorite. Lest we forget, Arthur's Ride won by an eye-catching 12 3/4 lengths over this course and distance against optional claimers June 7. “He's [Arthur's Ride] had four weeks in between,” said Mott. “We are hoping he has had enough time in between. He ran a huge race last time and we are hoping he can fire back that same shot.” A pair of Todd Pletcher trainees will try to not let Arthur's Ride out of their sight. Bright Future (Curlin) won this race last year, but he finished a well-beaten eighth in the Whitney and is looking to get back on track. In with a major chance is stablemate Tapit Trice (Tapit), who outgamed fellow entrant here Highland Falls (Curlin) in what was his 4-year-old unveiling in the Monmouth Cup last month. Owned by Whisper Hill and Gainesway, Tapit Trice's performance in Oceanport harkened back to how the colt took last year's Derby Trail by storm. “I was very happy with Tapit Trice's comeback win in the Monmouth Cup and he's been training exceptionally well for this,” Pletcher said. “I think the mile and a quarter suits him great.” Also signed on are a pair of talented types in Disarm (Gun Runner), who likes to come from the clouds for trainer Steve Asmussen, and a member of trainer Cherie DeVaux's shedrow–runner-up from the GI Stephen Foster Stakes at Churchill Downs in late June– Pyrenees (Into Mischief). Both are looking for their first top level win in the Gold Cup. Formidable Man | Benoit Swinging out to old seaside oval on Sunday, the GII Del Mar Derby over the Jimmy Durante Turf Course pits 8-5 morning line favorite Formidable Man (City of Light) against six others. The bay colt collected his first black-type for trainer Michael McCarthy in the Oceanside Stakes at Del Mar last month. The 3-year-old will face the runner-up from that race in Guy Named Joe (American Pharoah) and will be up against the winner of the La Jolla Handicap Stay Hot (Summer Front). King Power Racing's BELLUM JUSTUM (IRE) (c, 3, Sea The Stars {Ire}–Natural Beauty {GB}, by Oasis Dream {GB}) was the recipient of a letter-perfect steer from Frankie Dettori, split horses with less than a quarter-mile to race and held off a rails rally from GI Saratoga Derby hero Carson's Run (Cupid) to take the GIII DK Horse Nashville Derby Invitational at Kentucky Downs. Last to make the first corner with a short run from the start, Bellum Justum was no better than third-last turning down the backstretch, but was asked to steadily improve with a middle move along the insidd to be ahead of mid-division as they took the run up the hill. Settled in about fifth position entering the second turn, Bellum Justum was held together in the false straight, and when a gap materialized between pacesetting Navy Seal (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Abrumar (Divisidero) leaving the quarter pole, Bellum Justum went on the attack, pinched a bit of a break and held sway as Carson's Run tried him up the fence.
