  1. “If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere” is a classic lyric synonymous with the relentless spirit of New York City. It encapsulates the belief that conquering the city's challenges equips one to overcome any obstacle. A testament to the city's allure and its reputation as a place where dreams are made or broken, the line places the ultimate test of one's mettle squarely on the shoulders of the Big Apple. This spirit not only exemplifies Adelphi Racing Club's managing partner Matt Cutair, but also the enthusiasm members of this partnership hold in their hearts. Matt Cutair founded Adelphi Racing Club along with friends and original partners Jordan Zotts and Brian Hahn. “I grew up in Maryland so that meant following the Triple Crown/Preakness as a kid,” said Cutair. “I didn't have any family in the business or who even went to the racetrack on a regular basis. I got a job in New York City at 19 years old. Being in a new city and not knowing anyone, I found myself frequenting The Playwright Irish Pub and OTB in Midtown on occasion. By the time I was 21 years old I had developed a real passion for horse racing and wanted to own a racehorse or at least part of one and bought into Sovereign Stables who was a popular syndicator back then.” Adelphi partner Jeff Hayes found his way to Adelphi after a run with Sovereign as well. “Matt and I were part of another partnership many years ago (Sovereign Stable) but didn't know each other personally,” said Hayes. “A mutual friend, Rich Cristiano, had heard about Matt starting Adelphi and made the introductions. Matt and I met for a drink at Gulfstream, and I loved what I heard about the group and philosophy.” Cutair found success in the media business and became an executive with Westwood One and Pandora before co-founding Audio HQ. The digital audio advertisement and sales services company became highly successful, and as any good horse owner understands, when you are offered a good price for something, you take it. Cutair did, and approximately seven years ago sold Audio HQ and found himself financially secure and retired at just 40 years old. “I needed a pseudo-retirement project to keep myself engaged, so I formed Adelphi in 2019 and claimed a few horses,” said Cutair. “Of course, that is when the pandemic hit, and the tracks were closed to fans and owners. My previous experience with partnerships always felt more like an investment and I didn't feel like I actually owned the horses. I wanted to own horses with people I enjoyed. The joy comes from sharing experiences with like-minded people who are deeply involved like you. A true partnership–an adelphi,” he says, referring to the Greek word for brothers. “Thus, the beginning of Adelphi Racing Club.” One of the ways Cutair and Adelphi work to make the experience more of an actual partnership experience versus just a syndication opportunity lies in their commitment to diversification. Their list of trainers associated with Adelphi is extensive. Trainers like Christophe Clement, Ray Handal, Tom Morley, Robert Falcone Jr., Arnaud Delacour, John Terranova and Dave Duggan make up the current roster. “We have a diverse set of trainers simply because each one provides a distinct experience for our partners. The more experiences we provide, the more our partners learn about what they like about working with certain trainers and in some cases, what they don't like,” explained Cutair. “I have been involved in partnerships in a small way before meeting Matt,” said partner Thomas Palkovich. “I never had much success along the way but really enjoyed the sport. Adelphi changed all of that. The opportunities they put forth are of the highest quality, the success has been amazing, and I have invested in a number of horses. Matt also brings to the table something that is very important to me: transparency. The information he provides is second to none, and everyone's opinion matters. Matt is a great businessman and has surrounded himself with trainers and staff that help Adelphi become so successful.” Adelphi Racing Club is New York-circuit centric and has been heavily involved in the New York-bred program including recent New York Derby winner Pandagate. “Pandagate is just getting started,” said Cutair. “He won his New York-bred maiden special weight debut by nine as a two-year-old and then won the Gander by five-plus lengths in his three-year-old debut. We sent him to Dubai for the $1-million G2 UAE Derby where he finished third to Forever Young. After the New York Derby score, we are targeting The Albany at Saratoga in late August,” proudly states Cutair. Partner Bruce Steminsky said he has been very happy with his experience with Adelphi. “I bought my first horse with Adelphi in 2021,” he said. “Because I know very little about horses, I went with the portfolio approach, buying into multiple horses but with smaller ownership percentages. Twenty-five plus horses later–don't tell my wife–here we are. One of those horses, Pandagate, just gave us a tremendous thrill by winning the New York Derby at Finger Lakes. He's an awesome horse and gave such a gutsy performance. We are all so proud of him.” Adelphi also campaigned the New York-bred Funny How from 2022-2024. “Funny How won five races in a row, including three allowance races and the Broadway Stakes and she was second in a Grade III after that,” said Cutair. “Unfortunately, she bled in her subsequent race and was never the same. Her five-race run culminating in the open-length Broadway win was special. She's since been retired and bred to Constitution.” Being New York-centric also has its financial advantages, according to Cutair and thus half of Adelphi Racing Club's stable are New York-breds. “The purse levels are rising for New York-breds and you can still buy them for a reasonable price,” he said. “There are fewer horses to compete against and the bonuses for competing in open races is another incentive we like.” Partner Steminsky said he appreciated that aspect of the partnership. “Another important reason for me in choosing Adelphi is almost all of the horses race on the NYRA circuit,” he said. “I did not want to just own a racehorse. I wanted to see the horses in person and spend time with them. I love seeing the horses in their stalls and getting to know them and their unique personalities. The first time I came to the track in the morning and saw one of my horses work out, I was speechless. The first time in the Saratoga paddock seeing my horse saddled brought a tear to my eye. It's incredible seeing them develop and flourish right before your eyes.” The recent addition of New York-based bloodstock and jockey agent Joe Migliore as head of racing and partnership operations was designed to help manage the growth Adelphi has been experiencing and was an important move for Cutair. “From three horses in 2020 to over 30 active horses today and the offering of annual claiming partnerships, we needed support with day-to-day operations and on the partner side of things,” he explained. Adelphi Racing Club currently has 110 partners and Cutair maintains a one-third ownership percentage in each horse. The Club will purchase yearlings, two-year-olds-in-training, or make a private purchase and then offer that horse to current and prospective partners. “We are extremely transparent in every transaction that we execute,” Cutair said. “I personally take some additional risk by fronting the purchase price, but we typically will sell out quickly. The minimum investment is right around $5,000 and that includes a quarter's worth of estimated expenses,” outlined Cutair. “We like to have partners buy in for at least three to five percent of the horse so they have owner access and the perks NYRA offers. There is a markup of 15 to 20 percent and a disposition commission of five percent of the net gain on any horses we ultimately sell for a profit. We also retain five percent of purses won to cover administration and hospitality for the partnership. All other costs are a straight pass-thru and we make sure everyone knows exactly what things cost and why.” Partner Jeff Hayes said he appreciates the transparency. “Matt seeks input from the partners,” said Hayes. “We all get a vote. He's the managing partner, so he has to make the final decision, but I honestly believe he takes everyone's input to heart, and it shapes the way the club operates at both the horse level and partnership overall. Matt used the word club in the name deliberately. It really is a family and the partners all get along incredibly well. It's a great group to be a part of and is exactly what I was looking for in a partnership.” The post Partnerships: Adelphi Racing Club appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 3. On the back of Warmonger’s star win in the G1 Queensland Derby, Inglewood Stud is close to putting up the ‘book full’ sign for its exciting young stallion War Decree. “We’re limiting his book to 120 this season and he’s pretty close to that now, we’ve had a lot of bookings in the last few days. We’ll take another 5 or 6 on farm bookings then close him off,” said Inglewood Stud’s Gus Wigley. “He’s an exceptionally fertile horse with a great libido, but with our season starting a few weeks later down here and the scale of the farm we felt 120 was a good amount. “It’s fantastic for the horse and all those that have supported him, he’s a neat natured horse to stand at stud and he throws a fantastic type, so we’re very excited about how his career is tracking.” War Decree is standing the 2024 season at $7,000 +gst (LFG). (Photo by Brett Holburt/Racing Photos) Racing Victoria (RV) advised that the meeting scheduled at Mildura on Monday, August 26, has been transferred to Horsham. 6. Last Saturday, Caulfield held its first meeting of the new season, with the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes headlining the program. Meanwhile, Rosehill’s meeting featured several spring contenders who returned for their first run of the campaign. In this week’s edition of The Follow Files, we focus on three runners from Melbourne and Sydney who produced encouraging efforts and will play a role in feature races throughout the spring carnival. Caulfield Track rating: Good 4 Rail position: +9m entire circuit Race 7: Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) | Time: 1:09.90 Horse to follow: Vagrant (8th) Mitchell Freedman entered Vagrant in the Regal Roller Stakes first-up off a six-month spell, where she finished eighth, beaten 3.4 lengths by Arkansaw Kid. The daughter of Pariah settled at the rear of the field, well off the speed, and as she swung the home turn, she was more than eight lengths off the leaders. However, with a blistering turn of foot in the final 400m, Vagrant picked her way through the field and recorded the fastest last 400m (22.05s) and 200m (11.12s) sections of the entire meeting. When to bet: As a Group 3 winner and placegetter against her own sex, Vagrant will more than likely enter a race against fillies and mares next start over 1400m. The Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes at Flemington on September 14 stands out as an option for her. Race 6: Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) | Time: 1:03.33 Horse to follow: Kirribilli (3rd) In just her second career start, Kirribilli from the Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman stable recorded a valuable Group 3 placing in the Quezette Stakes. Luke Nolen let the daughter of Snitzel find her feet at the back of the field early in the race before getting onto the back of the runner-up, Geegees Mistruth, at the halfway mark. Although she was still last at the 200m pole, Kirribilli produced a burst of acceleration in the final 100m to run through the line strongly and nab third place. When to bet: Following her strong finish over 1100m, it is expected that Moody & Coleman will enter Kirribilli in a 1200m contest next. The Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes at Moonee Valley on September 7 could be the ideal race for her. Rosehill Track rating: Soft 6 Rail position: True entire circuit Race 7: Benchmark 88 Handicap (1200m) | Time: 1:11.44 Horse to follow: Kazou (1st) One of the best wins of the day came at Rosehill, when James McDonald piloted Kazou to an unlikely victory in the first leg of the quaddie. The Chris Waller-trained mare flopped out of the barriers and had to settle last over the sprint trip; however, with Australia’s leading jockey in the saddle, she still had a chance. McDonald let her balance up after the home turn and pushed her through gaps in the field before bursting through the pack late to record a breathtaking victory. When to bet: Considering Kazou normally races at the front of the field, her latest win showed that she has the ability to win from anywhere. Keep an eye out for where Waller enters her next, as she looks to be a horse to follow early in the spring. Top horse racing sites for blackbook features Horse racing tips View the full article
  7. Eight distaffers will contest Thursday's G1 Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks after two of the 10 overnight contenders with withdrawn before Tuesday morning's declaration stage. 9. Darren Danis rides Run Buddy Run to victory at Kranji Racecourse. Photo: Singapore Turf Club Waikato hoop Darren Danis has returned to New Zealand content in the knowledge that he has fulfilled a lifelong dream of riding a winner at Kranji Racecourse in Singapore. The Singapore native had been inspired to follow his father into a career in the saddle and began riding track work at Kranji before the opportunity arose to move to New Zealand a decade ago. The 32-year-old rider has enjoyed plenty of success in New Zealand, recording 101 wins, including two at stakes level, but he still had an itch to compete on the track where it all began. With Kranji’s imminent closure in October, it was now or never for Danis to head back to his homeland to ride, and he secured a contract with the Singapore Turf Club which commenced in April. “It was very nostalgic riding in Singapore,” Danis said. “It was where it all began and it was great catching up with Brian Dean (trainer, former employer) who was happy for me. “But it was quite sad to see how racing has gone, knowing that it is all going to finish on the 5th of October. It was a bittersweet moment.” With the closure of the Macau Jockey Club in April, there was an influx of jockeys to Singapore upon Danis’ arrival, and he said that made it hard for him to gain any traction. “I went at the wrong time because there was an abundance of jockeys rather than horses,” he said. “I was lucky to get three or four rides a weekend. It wasn’t easy, you still had to put the hard yards in. The top jockeys were there from Monday to Saturday, and it was quite difficult to get a ride. “But the whole Singapore Turf Club and trainers were very welcoming and hospitable.” Danis rode just the one winner during his time in Singapore, but he was rapt that he was able to fulfil that lifelong dream in front of his family. “I only rode one winner, Run Buddy Run,” he said. “As much as I would have loved to have ridden more, it was good to get that one win and tick that off the bucket list.” Danis was glad he was able to compete in front of his family and he said his win aboard Run Buddy Run may have attracted a new generation of his family to the sport. “Riding in front of the family was great, they were there every weekend,” he said. “I hadn’t seen my Granddad for five years, so it was good to see him. My niece is nearly three and I hadn’t spent much time with her. Unfortunately, she couldn’t come to the races because you can’t go to the races in Singapore until you are 18, but she was watching on TV and she is now even saying ‘Run Buddy Run’.” Danis said riding in Singapore took a bit to get used to, particularly having to ride at such a light weight. “They race very competitively over there and it is such a different style, they go faster. It was quite good to ride against the best (jockeys) there,” he said. “I had to ride 52kg every weekend. They ride light over there, they even claim at 52kg. I hadn’t ridden over 150 winners, so I still had my 1kg claim. “I did a lot of running to get my weight down, trying to balance with the food I ate – all the food that I have craved and missed for a long time.” While in Singapore, Danis said there was no shortage of visitors from New Zealand. “Some friends of mine from New Zealand came over to watch,” he said. “Corey Campbell, my manager Sam Durrant, Masa Hashizume and Kylan Wiles all came over and had a great time. It was good to show them my home.” Danis arrived back in New Zealand last Friday and said he is giving himself a week to settle back in before kicking off his season. “I always planned to come back in August because the new season has started and I didn’t want to lose out,” he said. “The last few meetings (in Singapore) are likely to be the same horses running and they are going to get less horses and it will be even harder to get rides then. I thought it was a good idea to come home and start my season here and try and get on the good ones. “I am going to freelance again and will come back to Matamata more often (to ride track work) and hopefully things play out even better.” Horse racing news View the full article
  10. Velocious will contest the Taupo Pak ’N’ Save 3YO Fillies (1100m) at Taupo on Wednesday. Photo: Race Images Serious spring business will begin early for trainer Stephen Marsh at Taupo where two of his young stable stars will make their seasonal debuts on Wednesday. Group 1 winner Velocious and unbeaten stakes winner Super Photon will resume in their respective age group events with both three-year-olds in fine fettle to open their campaigns. “They are in small but very interesting fields and it’s exciting to get these good horses back on track,” Marsh said. “We certainly haven’t screwed them down yet, but it’s an ideal kick off point and they are forward enough after a jump-out and a very soft trial each so they are going into their races extremely well.” Last season’s Group 1 Sistema Stakes (1200m) and Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m) winner Velocious opens her preparation in the Taupo Pak ’N’ Save 3YO Fillies (1100m) while Super Photon returns in the Poverty Bay Turf Club 3YO Colts & Geldings (1100m). Plans beyond Taupo for the pair are yet to be confirmed, with Australia firmly in the mix. “We’re not 100 percent sure, but there is a big chance the filly (Velocious) will head to Melbourne,” Marsh said. “There is the Thousand Guineas (Group 1, 1600m) and a lot of 1100 and 1200m races for fillies and they are mostly set weights and penalties, so she will have to carry decent weights.” While Marsh is happy with his charge’s condition, who will be ridden by Craig Grylls, he is wary about the threat posed by the Ken and Bev Kelso-trained Alabama Lass. “She looks very quick and she may well be too fast for us around Taupo,” Marsh said. “I just want to see our filly nice and relaxed and attacking the line strongly.” Ironically, Alabama Lass will be partnered by Velocious’ regular rider of last term Sam Spratt who made her decision based on the likelihood of the latter going to Australia. Meanwhile, Joe Doyle’s mount Super Photon was a debut winner last term before the Super Seth colt kept his perfect record intact with victory in the Listed Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre Stakes (1400m). “He could go to Melbourne and go toward the Caulfield Guineas (Group 1, 1600m) but again, it’s still up in the air,” Marsh said. “Australia is in our sights, but he could also go to Riccarton for the 2000 Guineas (Group 1, 1600m). “It’s hard to know which way to go and I’m thinking both horses will let us know if we should go to Melbourne, but there is still great racing at home for them. “The tracks and the spring weather here may be a concern and I’m 50/50 at the moment and happy to go either way.” Marsh is also keen on the resuming Taupo chances of Merchant Queen in the Waikato Stud Handicap (1200m). The daughter of Merchant Navy, who will benefit from apprentice Triston Moodley’s 2kg claim, won twice last season and finished runner-up in the Group 3 Almanzor Trophy (1200m). “Her form last preparation was extremely good and she trialled up well, she could end up in a pretty handy sprint race over Christmas,” Marsh said. 11. Terra Mitica pleased when winning her 1300m heat at the Cambridge Synthetic trials on Tuesday. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) Imported mare Terra Mitica impressed during her first New Zealand campaign and she firmly indicated there was more improvement to come this time around with an eye-catching trial on Tuesday. The Irish-bred six-year-old is raced by Cambridge Stud’s Brendan and Jo Lindsay and won an open 1300m heat on the synthetic track at Cambridge in her first steps toward adding black type to her record. Terra Mitica lobbed along at the back of the small field and rider Warren Kennedy sat quietly in the run home as she coasted home under her own steam. “There were only two other horses in it, but she trialled really well and has put on a bit of condition and matured,” private trainer Lance Noble said. “I thought she did a very good job for a two-win horse that came from England and was pretty highly rated and ended up in open company straight away. “I think she is in the right shape to carry on with it this year.” The daughter of Ulysees won open distance handicaps at Pukekohe and Matamata and finished fourth in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2400m). “Her main goal will be the Counties Cup (Group 3, 2100m) so we will be working backwards from that,” Noble said. Stablemate Habana was given a quiet time to finish fourth under Kennedy in his open 950m heat. The son of Zoustar was successful in the Group 3 Rich Hill Mile (1600m) and the Listed Fulton Family Stakes (1500m) last time in and will be tried in a new role. “He has come back well, he’s a fully mature horse now and he’s up in the ratings now so he will be carrying a fair bit of weight in handicaps,” Noble said. “We’re quite keen to push him out to see if he can get 2000m and if he can, it would open up a few more options for him.” Embellish’s stakes performed daughter Luberon also wasn’t put under any pressure by Kennedy to finish second in her 950m heat. “She had a funny sort of season which started off so promisingly and then we had a few issues with her, so she’ll just work her way through the grades and see where we end up,” Noble said. He will also have an interesting runner at Taupo on Wednesday with Little Stirrer to make her New Zealand debut in the Taupo Pak ‘N’ Save 3YO Fillies (1100m). The well-named daughter of Written Tycoon, who is out of Snitzel mare Teaspoon, won one of her three starts last season when prepared for Cambridge Stud at Lindsay Park. “The Hayes boys (Ben, Will and JD) had her and she won a two-year-old race and we thought she probably wasn’t quite going to measure up to their Group horses,” Noble said. “It will be a good test for her at Taupo with a couple of smart ones in it, but we’re happy with her. “We’ll get a good line on her and whether she goes on to the other early three-year-old fillies’ races like the Gold Trail Stakes (Group 3, 1200m).” Horse racing news View the full article
  12. Gohugo (inside) will contest the Reliable Man @ Westbury Stud (1300m) at Taupo on Wednesday. Photo: Race Images Palmerston North Consistent gelding Gohugo will kick-off his spring preparation at Taupo on Wednesday in the Reliable Man @ Westbury Stud (1300m). The six-year-old son of Per Incanto has won just one of his 16 starts, but has placed on 11 occasions, and trainers Guy Lowry and Leah Zydenbos are confident he can be competitive first-up. “He has won $60,000 in placings, so he has gone alright,” Lowry said. “He is a year older and he is nice and fresh, so he should go well.” Gohugo has been lumbered with 60kg on Wednesday and will jump from barrier four with jockey Kavish Chowdhoory aboard. All going to plan, Gohugo will head to his home track of Hastings on September 7 to compete on the opening day of the Hawke’s Bay Spring Carnival. “He is getting ready for the spring carnival here (Hastings),” Lowry said. “There is a 1300m and a 1400m, and if he happened to win at Taupo he would go to the (rating) 75 1400m.” Looking ahead to the weekend, Lowry will head north to Te Rapa with two contenders on Saturday, including Wewillrock in the Group 2 Foxbridge Plate (1200m). The six-year-old gelding has been in good form this preparation, winning two and runner-up in three of his last five starts, including a second placing to Imwonderfultonight in the Listed City Of Napier Spring (1200m). It will be seven weeks between runs for the gelding, but Lowry said he likes his races spaced and is hopeful his charge will feature in the finish on Saturday, with an eye towards the Group 1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) at Hastings next month. “I am happy with him. He is fit and we are hoping he will be competitive,” Lowry said. “If he went alright he will go to the Tarzino.” Lowry will also line-up the Little Avondale Stud-bred and raced Eyegeegee in the Super Seth 1500. The son of Time Test has won two of his five starts, including last start at Otaki in June, and is also on a path towards the Hawke’s Bay Spring Carnival. “It is a nice kick-off for him over 1500m leading into here,” Lowry said. 14. What Warwick Farm Races Where Warwick Farm Racecourse – 2 Hume Hwy, Warwick Farm NSW 2170 When Wednesday, August 21, 2024 First Race 1:25pm AEST Visit Dabble Metro racing returns to Warwick Farm Racecourse on Wednesday afternoon, with a quickfire seven-part program scheduled to get underway at 1:25pm local time. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit, and although the track is rated a Soft 7 at the time of acceptances, the sunny skies forecast in the lead-up should mean an upgrade to the Good range for race day. Check out our best bets and quaddie numbers for the Warwick Farm races on August 21. Best Bet at Warwick Farm: Celerity Celerity returns after a 178-day spell and appears primed for a first-up assault. The daughter of Exceed And Excel was held back under a stranglehold by Zac Lloyd in a recent trial at Hawkesbury on August 5, with the three-year-old seemingly ready to explode if given the cue in the final furlong. She was earmarked as a top seed for Godolphin heading into last season’s Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), and although she was unable to reach those hefty targets, this maiden appears well within her grasp. Best Bet Race 2 – #3 Celerity (3) 3yo Filly | T: James Cummings | J: Zac Lloyd (57.5kg) +280 with Unibet Next Best at Warwick Farm: House Of Cards House Of Cards couldn’t have been more impressive first-up at Hawkesbury on August 1, careering away to score by 2.8 lengths as he was eased down by Tommy Berry in the concluding stages. He gets his first crack at metro company in this wide-open BM72 contest, and with Berry likely to stalk his rivals from the one-one, watch for House Of Cards, who should be powering home down the centre of the course as he looks to secure back-to-back wins. 15. By Michael Guerin Team Dunn are set to be the major players at the first big-time Addington meeting of the spring as they bring out of the big guns on Friday night. The premiership leaders of Robert and Jenna Dunn have a remarkable six starters in the $40,000 Allied Security Maurice Holmes Vase, the pacing centrepiece of the night while they also have Sunnys Sister returning in the Basil Dean Trot. Add in Aardiebythehill and Mighty Logan in that mobile 2600m and they will have nine starters over the two major races, a feat that would rarely has been matched in New Zealand before with the obvious exception of the All Stars at their peak. The Maurice Holmes has drawn a 16-horse field with the Telfer pair of B D Joe and Ohoka Connor the only starters off the 10m handicap, although there are three on the unruly. It is going to provide a nightmare for bookies and plenty of fun for punters with the ratings ranging from R64 for Boudica to B D Joe’s 103 mark with everything from former NZ Cup contenders to Black Mach stepping up from the intermediate grade. The winner of the Vase is guaranteed a start in the NZ Cup and considering how many non-regular Cup type horses there are in the field it could provide a genuine golden ticket. B D Joe will have his race day start since the IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup last year, when he finished eighth. One horse facing a different challenge this week is stablemate Ohoka Connor, with senior trainer Steve Telfer wanting to see improved standing start manners from the big boy. “He has been missing away from the stand and did it again in his trial recently so we want to see that improve,” says Telfer. “If he doesn’t start getting it right it will be hard to aim him at the NZ Cup and we may even look at Australia and mobile races, like the Victoria Cup (October 12).” To see Friday’s Addington fields click here View the full article

Odds Bookmakers News Field Past Winners Breeders’ Plate Group Three Betting Guide Date: Saturday, October 5, 2024 Location: Randwick Racecourse – Sydney, New South Wales Prize Money: $250,000 Distance: 1000m The Breeders’ Plate is a Group 3 race for two-year-old colts and geldings run at Randwick over 1000 metres. Established in 1906, the Breeders Plate has always been contested over this distance. Initially a Principal Race, the Breeders Plate was promoted to Group 3, demoted to Listed in 1992, and then reinstated as a Group 3 event in 2018. In 2007, Breeders Plate was postponed due to equine influenza, but resumed in early 2008 as a key Golden Slipper lead-up. The Breeders’ Plate has produced many future stars, including Golden Slipper winners Eskimo Prince, Baguette, Luskin Star, Pierro, and Capitalist. Gai Waterhouse has an exceptional record in the Breeders Plate, including filling the trifecta in 2023 with just three entries. Victorian runners have been less common, though Dubious won for Ciaron Maher & David Eustace in 2018. In 2024, the race’s prize money is $250,000. 2024 Breeders’ Plate betting odds 2024 Breeders’ Plate odds are currently unavailable. The race favourite with online bookmakers, Scampi ($2.90), led the field up to the home turn, but as soon as the whips began to crack, the Waterhouse & Bott runners claimed the leaders within a few strides. With 200m to go, Blake Shinn and Regan Bayliss settled down to fight out the finish, with Shinn getting the upper hand in the final strides to claim the Group 3 contest in a tight photo. Rounding out the Waterhouse & Bott trifecta was the fast-finishing Prost ($19.00), who burst through a gap late to charge at his stablemates in the final 50m. 2022: Empire Of Japan reigns supreme Peter and Paul Snowden, renowned for their knack with two-year-olds, clinched their third Group 3 Breeders’ Plate (1000m) victory with Empire Of Japan. Starting as the $5.50 third favorite in a competitive field, the colt showcased a remarkable burst of speed to dominate the race. Under jockey James McDonald, he trailed the eight-runner field early from barrier eight. Accelerating past rivals at the 400m mark, Empire Of Japan surged past the $4.60 favorite, Physical Graffiti, and then overhauled Mach Ten to secure victory. 2021: Sejardan storms to juvenile feature success Trainer Gary Portelli’s strategy to prepare Sejardan for race day rather than the trials paid off handsomely. After finishing a close second in the official trials prior to his debut, Sejardan showed significant improvement. Despite a brief scare at the gates when he caught a hind leg on the side rail, Sejardan remained composed and professional under Jason Collett. Caught behind runners with 400m to go, Sejardan took time to find clear ground but unleashed a dazzling turn of foot to storm past his rivals, securing a 1.25-length victory over the well-regarded I Am Invincible colts, Zambezi River and Emperor. 2020: Shaquero hits the spot on debut Shaquero, who prepared for his debut with a trial win at Waller’s Gold Coast base on September 21, made a strong impression when claiming the Group 3 Breeders’ Plate (1000m). Ridden by the in-form James McDonald, Shaquero was driven to the front early and had plenty left in the tank in the straight. He held off the challenge of I Am Invincible colt Construct by 1.25 lengths, with Star Turn colt Astrologer finishing third, the same distance behind. 19. Golden Slipper winner Lady Of Camelot. Photo: RacingNSW Zac Lloyd piloted Lady Of Camelot to a trial victory at Randwick on Monday, with connections potentially eyeing him for the ride in next month’s Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley. The Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) runner-up led her star-studded trial by 1.3 lengths over Giga Kick, leaving Lloyd impressed. “That was my first time sitting on her back, and she’s obviously a very good filly,” the jockey told Racing.com. “She gave me a great, great feel and trialled really well. I was instructed to give her a nice hit-out, so I jumped, let her flow to the front, and built up the straight. And I thought she did her work very well.” Co-trainer Adrian Bott was at the track to observe the Slipper-winning filly and was equally pleased. “She looked sharp,” Bott said. “She took the improvement that we wanted to see. They ran good time. There seemed a bit of depth to the trial as well, which helps give you a bit of validation to the performance. “Zac was on there to get a feel for the Moir, and at this stage, that’s where we’re on track to go. “She’s won a Group 1 race, so the chance to do something at weight-for-age is always another valuable addition for her. “The 1000 metres should suit, and everything we’re doing is also with a potential Everest in mind.” Lady Of Camelot is currently a $6 winning chance with horse racing bookmakers for the Moir Stakes on September 7. Maureen Lewi, longtime friend to Whitney and Hendrickson, was with him in the hospital and confirmed his death to the Times-Union. “I was at the hospital holding his hand,” Lewi told the Times-Union. “I was talking to him, but he wouldn't talk back–he was gone.” Following Whitney's death at 93 in 2019, Hendrickson continued the couple's charitable pursuits, including a $1.2 million contribution to the assist Saratoga's backstretch workers and to build a pavilion on the property. 24. GISW Arabian Knight (Uncle Mo-Borealis Night, by Astrology), has been retired from racing and will stand at Hill 'n' Dale, according to a farm release Monday. Sold for $250,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September Sale, the Corser Thoroughbreds bred colt brought a sale-topping $2.3 million from Zedan Racing at the OBS Spring Sale the following season. “He showed his brilliance from day one of the 2YO sale where he was a man amongst boys. We knew he was special from the moment we saw him. He has what I love in a horse –beautiful conformation and brilliance,” said Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. Earning TDN Rising Star distinction following a 7 1/4-length score going seven furlongs at Keeneland in November, the bay added a victory in the GIII Southwest Stakes the following January. Third in the GI Haskell, he eked out a score over Grade I winner Geaux Rocket Ride in the GI Pacific Classic. He finished fourth in his two latest starts in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic and the GII San Diego Handicap at Del Mar in July. Following his debut win, trainer Bob Baffert said, “you ride him like you rode Uncle Mo, because I think he is Uncle Mo.” “He was a beast at the sales, that's why he cost so much. He has got to be one of the most talented 2-year-old I've ever had.” Following the announcement of his retirement, Baffert added, “He's just not back to where I had him last year. We need more time which we don't have. I just don't want another Arrogate situation on my hands. This is an exceptionally talented horse.” Hill 'n' Dale's John Sikura added, “I was at Keeneland the day that Arabian Knight broke his maiden. He was brilliantly fast, yet effortless in his first start, winning off without being asked. He was the star at the Two Year Old sale making $2.3 million and has the 'it' factor we all look for. He retires with three wins from six starts and earnings of $1,562,275. “As a Grade I-winning son of Uncle Mo, Arabian Knight has the brilliance, physicality and effortless motion that are so important for a sire to possess,” said Sikura. “The first time I saw him in person, Bob Baffert said, 'let me show you the perfect racehorse, his presence and conformation are flawless.'” The post GISW Arabian Knight Retired to Hill ‘n’ Dale appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
