Not that the high-grade meeting is actually called that but it might as well be for plenty of the starters in the $60,000 Lamb And Hayward Canterbury Classic. The 2600m standing start is the latest in a series of almost identical races in the south in the last six weeks, all of them aiming toward the IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup on November 12. The difference is this one boasts three golden tickets to the Cup and for at least half the field on Friday it might be the last chance to get in. It is rare to see so many southern pacers hoping to get a New Zealand Cup slot but realistically sitting outside the 15 who will actually start. With Leap To Fame and Better Eclipse coming, the north having at least three serious open class stars in Merlin, Sooner The Better and Mach Shard and the likes of Dalton Shard and Republican Party already certain to be in the Cup, over half the field is set in stone. Add in the soon to return Don’t Stop Dreaming and even if none of the other Aussies nominated come (which is looking increasingly likely) then there are only seven Cup spots left with about 12-15 horses trying to secure them. So Friday’s race, with so few of the NZ Cup favourites involved, is far and away the best opportunity for those on the borderline to make their way into the Cup field. It includes the usual Team Dunn army, the return of Alta Meteor and Beach Ball and last Friday’s impressive Addington winner Tact McLeod. It highlights a card that also hosts the Lazarus Stakes for some of the south’s best three-year-olds and $50,000 Aldebaran Eagle Two-Year-Old Trot, with the unbeaten Habibti Pat versus Ya Rite Darl. Photo: Darren Winningham The Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) headlines the action at Rosehill on Saturday afternoon, with a quality field of 11 set to line up in the $1 million three-year-old feature. The James Cummings-trained Broadsiding returns after a 101-day spell, and despite being first-up into the event, horse racing bookmakers were quick to install the two-time Group 1 winning colt as a $2.80 favourite. James McDonald is set to be legged aboard the son of Too Darn Hot and should get an ideal run in transit after drawing barrier one. Stable companion Traffic Warden is on the second line of betting at $4.20 after a strong first-up victory in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) on September 14, a race that has produced the Golden Rose winner in four of the last six editions. The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Storm Boy ($4.40) appears to be the natural leader in this year’s edition, but with a nasty habit of missing the kick, Adam Hyronimus may have some work to do crossing from barrier 11 aboard the Justify colt. Linebacker ($8.00) closed off with some of the best closing sectionals across the entire meeting first-up in the Run To The Rose and should appreciate a step up to the 1400m, while Anode ($11.00) comes through the same race attempting to turn the tables on Traffic Warden. (Photo by Pat Scala/Racing Photos) Pride Of Jenni and Mr Brightside are set to renew their rivalry in Friday’s Group 2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley, with trainer Ciaron Maher confirming that his star mare will run as long as there isn’t significant rainfall. “Very happy, she’s come on. Providing it doesn’t rain too much – we’ll see how that plays out – but she’s certainly ready to go,” Maher told Racing.com. “Dec (Bates) worked her this morning, and she’s in great order.” Pride Of Jenni has finished behind Lindsay Park’s Mr Brightside in their last two meetings, placing fifth in last month’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) and finishing second behind him in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m). However, Maher remains optimistic. “Hopefully we can turn the tables. She’s certainly shown she’s still on the improve,” he added. “The grand final is the King Charles, that’s been her target. Since finishing second on debut in maiden company back in February, Growing Empire has strung together four consecutive wins in stakes races, most recently claiming a 1.3-length victory in the Listed Poseidon Stakes (1100m) earlier this month. Trainer Ciaron Maher acknowledges that stepping up to elite-level competition will be a significant test for the colt. “We’re going to have a look at how the race maps and shapes for him,” Maher told Racing.com. “He worked on Saturday and has come through his run at Flemington in great order, so we’re looking forward to Friday. “I’m confident, three-year-olds have got a good record and he’s pretty progressive.” In addition to Growing Empire, Maher will likely have a strong presence in the race, with stablemates Recommendation, Southport Tycoon, and Estriella all expected to contest Friday’s feature. Photo: Darren Winningham Connections of I Wish I Win have reported that the six-year-old has improved since his first-up performance in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m), though they believe there’s still room for further progress. After an eye-catching fifth-place finish in the Moir on September 7, I Wish I Win is set to return to Moonee Valley this Friday night for the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m). Following this, he’ll have three weeks to prepare for his primary target, The Everest (1200m) at Randwick, a race that has been in his sights since his Queensland winter campaign after his victory in the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm in June. “He seems to have taken really good fitness from that first-up run, which is what we wanted to see,” said Katherine Coleman, who trains I Wish I Win in partnership with Peter Moody. “He’s got to improve a little from his first-up run, but the way that he was through the line gives you every indication that he will.” With The Everest fast-approaching, Coleman is confident the team around I Wish I Win can have him primed for success for the $20 million feature. “It’s a race that can change complexion right up to the very last minute, so all we can do is focus on our horse and have him in the best shape we can.” Horse racing news View the full article

The Supreme Court of the United States Monday officially intervened in the 3 1/2-year legal odyssey in which the National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (NHBPA) and 12 of its affiliates are trying to wipe out the Horseracing and Safety Integrity Act (HISA) as an allegedly unconstitutional law. That intervention took the form of a Sept. 23 Supreme Court order signed by Justice Samuel Alito, Jr. directing the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit not to issue its pending mandate stemming from a recent Fifth Circuit opinion that HISA's enforcement mechanism is unconstitutional. The Supreme Court order stated that the Fifth Circuit's mandate “is hereby administratively stayed pending further order of Justice Alito or of the [Supreme] Court.” Alito additionally ordered that the NHBPA and other plaintiffs in the lawsuit file a response to the HISA Authority's application for a stay on or before Monday, Sept. 30. The HISA Authority defendants had made that application for a stay last Thursday. An administrative stay is used to freeze legal proceedings until a court can more fully consider and then rule on a party's request for expedited relief. An administrative stay is not the same thing as a court issuing an injunction or making a broader ruling in an overall case, a point raised by Eric Hamelback, the chief executive officer of the NHBPA, when TDN contacted him Monday for comment on the Supreme Court order. “The administrative stay does not reflect any opinion about the merits of an argument,” Hamelback wrote in an email. “This is simply a mechanism to give the Court time to gather and read briefing from all sides [and] our team will be ready to forcefully press our arguments within our response.” The HISA Authority, through a spokesperson, emailed a comment to TDN that stated, “This is a good first step to ensure that the HISA Authority can continue to do everything in its power to protect the safety and integrity of Thoroughbred racing.” Although the NHBPA and the HISA Authority are at odds over whether the federal law that regulates the sport is constitutional, they both agree–and have indicated for months now in court filings and media interviews–that the Supreme Court needs to be the entity that resolves the current “circuit split” in which different U.S. appeals courts have issued conflicting opinions about whether or not HISA is constitutional. “We now have our case in front of the Supreme Court, and all parties agree that the SCOTUS should hear the case,” Hamelback wrote. “We also all believe that it should do so on an expedited basis to secure a final decision for horsemen and the horse racing industry by the end of this term [in June 2025].” In a different case, a Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals panel opined Mar. 3, 2023, that Congressional changes to the law in 2022 made HISA completely constitutional. In the HBPA vs. HISA case in the Fifth Circuit, a panel there opined July 5, 2024, that HISA's enforcement provisions are unconstitutional (even though the Fifth Circuit agreed with the Sixth that HISA's rulemaking methods were constitutional). Then last Friday, Sept. 20, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit affirmed a ruling out of a lower federal court in Arkansas that had denied a preliminary injunction sought by horsemen in Arkansas and Iowa to halt HISA and its Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) program. That three-judge Eighth Circuit panel opined that, “The Fifth Circuit declared the enforcement provisions of the statute unconstitutional because it thought the [FTC's] power to modify and add to the rules of the Authority does not 'authorize basic and fundamental changes in the scheme designed by Congress.'” But, the Eighth Circuit opinion continued, “Like the Sixth Circuit, we are satisfied that the statute's enforcement provisions are not unconstitutional on their face and in all of their applications.” Here's how the HISA Authority summarized its points in the Sept. 19 application for a stay of the Fifth Circuit mandate pending the filing and disposition of a “writ of certiorari,” which is the term for a formal request for the Supreme Court to take a case. “Three federal courts [including the Sixth Circuit] have now resolved materially identical challenges to the amended Act and reached the same conclusion: HISA is constitutional. But the Fifth Circuit recently contradicted that consensus, holding that HISA's enforcement provisions facially violate the private-nondelegation doctrine… “The Fifth Circuit's outlier decision should not be permitted to trample other courts' considered judgments pending disposition of the Authority's forthcoming petition for a writ of certiorari. But Respondents–including a national association whose members race across the country–brazenly seek to leverage the Fifth Circuit's facial judgment to bar HISA's enforcement in other circuits nationwide,” the filing continued. “For that reason (among others), each factor that guides this Court's stay consideration is easily satisfied here,” the filing stated. “First, given the acknowledged circuit split on a question of undisputed legal and practical importance, all agree that review by [the Supreme Court] is necessary and likely… “Second, there is at least a 'fair prospect' that a majority of [the Supreme Court] will concur with the Sixth Circuit's view… “Third, maintaining the status quo is necessary to prevent irreparable harm,” the filing stated. “Allowing the Fifth Circuit's decision to take effect nationwide (as Respondents openly seek), wherever [NHBPA] members race across the country, would inflict a serious blow to separation-of-powers and comity principles…” the filing stated. “The data are clear: more horses would die and more cheaters would prosper.” The post U.S. Supreme Court Intervenes in HBPA vs. HISA Lawsuit appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Tuesday racing at Cambridge will kick start another busy week of harness racing. Today there’ll be eight races, starting at 4.30pm with four more meetings this week with Gore on Thursday, followed by Addington and Auckland (Friday) and Timaru on Sunday. Auckland’s meeting will feature the third heat of the latest Silk Road series for the Fillies and Mares. Part of a strategy to revitalise northern racing, the Silk Road Northern Spring series is in its first year and is all about encouraging, and rewarding fillies and mares with five $15,000 heats leading into a $30,000 final. The first two placed runners from each heat are automatic qualifiers for the final. The third heat will be this Friday, with heats four and five on October 4 and 11 before the $30,000 Final on October 18. Addington’s Friday meeting will feature the $60,000 Lamb and Hayward Canterbury Classic, with the first three home in the Group 2 guaranteed a start in the IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington Raceway on Tuesday, November 12. Telfers take four to Cambridge By Brigette Solomon The training partnership of Steve and Amanda Telfer send a competitive team of four horses south to Cambridge Raceway for tonight’s meeting. All four will be driven by stable driver Josh Dickie. Their first starter for the night is Princess Lisa in Race 3, the Off The Track Food And Bev Mobile Pace over 2200 metres. “She’s only a small filly but does have a decent turn of foot and trialled up well prior to her first start,” says Telfer. The two-year-old filly by American Ideal has had just one race start finishing eighth at Alexandra Park on September 13. On that occasion she appeared to be travelling well in running when three back on the fence but sustained a punctured tyre at the 600 metre mark hindering her capacity to let down in the home straight. “It’s hard to say how she would have finished off last start if she hadn’t got the punctured tyre but Josh (Dickie) said she was travelling well prior to that and it’s turned out to be a good form race with Beetastic coming out and winning the Group 1 race on Friday.” Up next in Race 4, the Oktoberfest At The Clubhouse Tickets On Sale Now Handicap Trot, is Joca’s Hill. The four-year-old gelding has exhibited talent in the past, but manners have let him down on occasion. However, a spell and a drop back in company looks to have been beneficial with his fresh up run here last week over the 2200 metre trip yielding a second placing after being run down late in the home straight by winner Johnny Who. “We decided not to trial him and head straight to Cambridge with him for a couple of starts to round off his fitness so I was happy with his fresh up run last week,” says Telfer, “his manners and effort were good and he’s trained on well since but his fitness isn’t 100 percent there yet so there’s improvement in him.” “It’s a bigger field tonight so he’ll have a little bit more work to do to overcome the 20 metre handicap.” Joca’s Hill’s three wins have all come at this track and distance and he starts tonight’s race off a 20 metre handicap. The next of the Telfer runners is Precious Bet in Race 7, the Dunstan Horsefeeds Mobile Pace over 2200 metres. The Bettor’s Delight three-year-old is another whose two wins and multiple placings have all come on this track. His most recent run on September 10 saw him finish second behind the Cambridge Tuesday specialist Red Rackham, with a margin of five lengths back to the third placed Victor Bravo. With two starts at Cambridge this preparation for a second and a third placing, Precious Bet looks well placed and drawn (2) tonight. “He’s an honest horse and has good gate speed and a lovely draw to work with tonight and I imagine he’ll end up in front tonight,” says Telfer, “he’s a bit stronger this preparation and no doubt he’ll give a good account of himself.” Elizabeth Hill is the Telfer’s final starter for the night contesting Race 8, the Quiz Night At The Clubhouse Every Wednesday Trot. The four-year-old mare has had just two starts since arriving at the Telfer’s northern stables for two third placings, one at Alexandra Park and most recently at Cambridge last week. The What The Hill mare started last week off a 30 metre handicap and after sitting parked for most of the race, briefly slotted onto the back of the leader at the 600 metre mark, before shifting out on the home bend only to later shift back down to the passing lane to obtain clear running. She finished just a length behind race winner Rock On Jazz. “She’s a consistent trotter with good manners and another who we didn’t trial prior to first racing up here instead electing to head straight to the races,” says Telfer, “she didn’t quite get the run clear past other horses last start, but I was happy with her effort.” “She’s trotting really solid and doesn’t make too many mistakes and I think she’d be our best chance for the night.” Race 1 gets underway tonight at 4.30pm and it’s the last opportunity for on course participants to be in the Trot Into Tuesday’s draw to win a $250 cash prize plus an entry for the $4000 grand prize to be drawn tonight. Taylor Made's Steve Castagnola said their team is excited about making their Inglis Digital USA debut. “This is the first time Taylor Made has consigned on the Inglis platform and we have been impressed,” he said. “We're excited to see how Bellavinino sells on Wednesday. The buyers have really caught on to the concept of these digital sales and they are having a huge impact on the industry right now.” Campaigned by C2 Racing Stable and trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., Bellavinino broke her maiden on debut by 3 1/4 lengths over the Gulfstream Park turf on July 28. After finishing fourth against allowance company at Kentucky Downs in her next start, she returned to the same track for the one-mile Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies Stakes. After breaking alertly, the filly raced off the pace in third but was boxed in coming into the stretch and had to angle out to get up for second. “She did not get a very clean trip down the lane, but she showed that she is game and she is tough,” said Castagnola. “She is a very exciting opportunity because she's a lightly raced 2-year-old and has already shown that she has a ton of class. She's extremely good-looking. She has a great, clean neck, a huge shoulder and a deep heart girth. She looks the part.” Castagnola said that he believes the best is yet to come for the juvenile not only because her numbers have improved in each of her three starts according to Ragozin and Thoro-Graph figures, but also because the filly's sire Get Stormy performed at his best as an older horse. “Get Stormy won his first Grade I as a 5-year-old in the Maker's Mark Mile Stakes and then he won the GI Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes at Churchill Downs,” Castagnola recalled. “He also won a Grade I as a 6-year-old. His best daughter, Got Stormy, won two Grade I races at four and another at six. For me, the fact that this filly has shown so much precocity is somewhat of an anomaly and I would think that she would do nothing but get better with time.” Castagnola pointed out that Bellavinino is eligible for a $110,000 non-winners of two turf allowance at Keeneland on Oct. 11. She is also nominated for the GIII Surfer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 6. “Should she win that, it would all but guarantee her a spot in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf,” he said. “And than with an eye to the future, she has already proven than she likes Kentucky Downs, which not everybody does. That would give me hope that she would figure prominently in some of those big-money races next year.” In her first three career starts, Bellavinino has amassed earnings of $224,800. “Being stakes-placed as a 2-year-old gives her some residual value,” said Castagnola. “Given her looks and the fact that she's already blacktype, she'd make a nice addition to a lot of broodmare bands. Bidding returns to Fairplex for the one-session Fasig-Tipton California Fall Yearlings Sale, which begins in Pomona at 11 a.m. PT Tuesday. “It got pretty busy throughout the day yesterday and it's really busy this morning,” Fasig-Tipton California representative Mike Machowsky said from the sales grounds Monday morning. “We have a bunch of trainers and owners out here looking this morning, so that's a good sign. “I would expect anyone who races in California to be here. This is where you go to buy your premium Cal-breds, most likely, and if you race here, it's a luxury to have them.” A total of 279 yearlings–dominated largely by California-breds–have been catalogued for the auction. “It's strong,” Machowsky said of the catalogue. “The breeders out here have done a big-time job, stepping up and buying mares. We have a lot of Kentucky-sired Cal-breds in the sale, which always brings people out looking. We have both pedigree and sire power in a lot of these horses.” The catalogue includes a supplemental offering from Harris Farm. The filly (hip 278) is a full-sister to six-time stakes winner Kings River Knight (Acclamation) and she is a half-sister to last year's sale-topping son of Vronsky, who sold for $250,000 to West Point Thoroughbreds. “I think it will be a good, solid sale,” Machowsky said. “We will have some horses bring some pretty good money. And so far, it seems like all the right people are here looking.” During last year's auction, which included a section of horses of racing age, 185 horses grossed $5,751,500 for an average of $31,089 and a median of $15,000. Twelve yearlings sold for six figures, with four bringing at least $200,000. You cannot guarantee much when it comes to the yearling sales. But one thing is for sure, lot 206 will be the only horse offered at Part 1 of the Tattersalls September Yearling Sale that was raised on Polish grass. Bartek Radzikowski admits that consigning the first Polish-reared yearlings at Tattersalls Ireland this week under the banner of Baroda Stud will help him fulfil a lifelong ambition and said that he hopes a good result in the ring could provide a springboard for his unorthodox pinhooking programme to grow. The 30-year-old explained, “This was always a dream of mine to do this. I have worked for a really long time in Ireland and always wanted to have my own farm. We have land in Poland and I was lucky a few years ago with a mare I bought for five grand. We sold her for 25 grand and then I built a little barn back home in Poland with the money I got from that. The plan was to buy two foals to bring back home to Poland and I was so thrilled to get them. This is the first [lot 206], a Lucky Vega (Ire) colt who cost €30,000, and the other is an Inns Of Court (Ire) colt who cost €10,000 as a foal and sells at Part 2.” He added, “I own 60 per cent of both horses and friends of mine own the rest. I always felt that, if I wanted to start pinhooking, I'd have to start with a younger sire as they would be easier to buy and also easier to sell. I saw every single colt foal at the sales last year. I followed in a lot of foals that I couldn't afford. But every time I saw this Lucky Vega colt, he gave me the same show. That's why I bought him. He is a rock solid colt and has been that way since day one.” The Eastern European flavour to Tattersalls Ireland, be it at the yearling or breeze-up sales, is something that has been celebrated in recent years. The Polish market is certainly one that is growing but it's the horses that have been for export that usually grab the headlines. That's what makes Radzikowski's role at this week's sale so interesting. He said, “There are massive nerves. It's really hard to buy a nice foal and I can remember I tried so hard but I just couldn't seem to get one over the line. The Lucky Vega colt was the second-last lot into the ring at Goffs and I can remember hiding under the stairs so nobody could see me. I was bidding very fast so that some of the buyers would think that maybe the bidder was a big man with a big budget and maybe not to take me on. Little did they know that I was not a big man and I had a limit. I was very lucky to get him and, like I said, it has been my dream to do this.” Radzikowski added, “I worked for Guy O'Callaghan at Grangemore Stud for four years and learned a lot over there. I also worked for Yeomanstown Stud with the stallions as well. I started coming to Ireland when I was 12. My father, who is known as Billy, has worked for Rathasker Stud for most of his life and I used to come and visit him in Ireland before eventually moving here myself. I couldn't dream of doing anything else with my life other than working with horses. I just love it. Prepping horses is one of the best aspects of the business for me and I have really enjoyed seeing these horses grow and develop back home in Poland.” While the cost effective thing might have been for Radzikowski to get his colts prepped for the sales in Ireland, that would defeat the purpose of this venture. Yes, there is a bottom line to pinhooking foals, but in this case, it's a love of the animal and the process involved in readying horses for the sales that proved more of an allure to the Polish native who spends half his time in Ireland and the rest in his native land. He explained, “These horses look good. We have very different weather in Poland compared to Ireland. We have very warm summers but also very cold winters. Where I am based in Poland, we have a lot of forests and these horses go walking for 45 minutes through the woods every evening. Okay, I could have gotten these horses prepped by somebody else in Ireland and it would have saved me some money but then I would not have been able to see them every day. I don't do this for money. Yes, money is important, but I just love horses and I hope to be able to do this every year and for a long time. Not just once.” Indeed, Radzikowski is not the only native of Eastern Europe who has commanded attention on the sales ground as Lithuanian native Ausra Bargary who, along with her husband Colin, bought the Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Stakes winner Spirit D'Or (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) from the Irish National Stud last year. She is now two from four for trainer Gavin Hernon including that €135,500 prize for winning the sales race. “I had a baby only a few weeks before this sale last year,” Bargary recalled. “That's why I came for only one day last year. Spirit D'Or was one of the first fillies that I saw and, when I saw her, I said to Colin that we needed to buy her. No matter what she was making, I wanted to get her. There was so much class about her and she just looked a good one. She has a lovely page, being the first foal out of a Dubawi mare, and there was an Invincible Spirit under the second dam who was a good filly as well.” She added, “When we bought her, we entered her in the sales race and said that, if she didn't make good money at the breeze-up sales, we could always race her ourselves. Thankfully she made money at the sales and then went on to prove how good she is on the track. I am just so thrilled for the Irish National Stud and it's a nice pedigree update for them to have as well. Her brother [417] is in the sale this week and he is lovely as well.” It shouldn't go unnoticed the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes at Tattersalls Ireland to make this sale ground the international hub that it is. Not a week has gone by this year where the sales company's social media hasn't been updated by a representative at a big meeting abroad and the fruits of that labour are reaping just rewards. Tattersalls Ireland chief Simon Kerins commented, “I think the quality is certainly on a par if not better than last year, which was a brilliant sale. We have a huge number of people who deserve credit in attracting the buyers here. Niamh Flynn does a huge amount of work on the ground while Mary Lanigan, John McDonell and all of our marketing team and agents do some incredible work behind the scenes.” He added, “The international buyers have always enjoyed coming here and they feel that they get value. As soon as the hammer drops on this year's sale, we'll be trying to get them all back-England, Ireland and broader Europe-for next year. The Goodwood Estate has appointed Adam Waterworth as the Group's new chief executive officer, it was announced on Monday. Waterworth has served in senior roles at Goodwood since joining in 2010, most recently as the events managing director, where he broadened his remit from horseracing to include all of the estate's headline events in 2020. Prior to Goodwood, he held various positions across a number of UK racecourses. The appointment is effective from Tuesday, October 1 as Waterworth takes over from Chris Woodgate, who has held the position for seven years. “It is an honour to become Goodwood's CEO and lead the organisation into its next chapter,” said Waterworth. “As we plan for the future, we can draw from over 300 years of heritage and history, and I'm proud to have such a strong team with me as we continue to develop and host amazing experiences for our customers, fans and partners.” The Duke of Richmond CBE DL, executive chairman of the Goodwood Estate, added, “I am delighted that Adam will become our new CEO in October, bringing his assured leadership and track record of performance and delivery to the role.
