Helena Baby has established himself as a serious horse to watch in the hurdling ranks this season and will start a path towards the Great Northern Hurdles (4200m) with a flat contest on Saturday at Te Rapa. The eye-catching grey won two editions of the Listed Opunake Cup (1400m) and was placed at Group One level over 1400m before transitioning into the jumping distances effortlessly, going back-to-back at Te Aroha last month. Set to contest his first feature a fortnight ago, the Wellington Hurdles (3200m), Helena Baby was ruled out after an unfortunate incident during trackwork. “He was working out on the back track and treaded on another horse’s shoe, which drove the nails and clip into his foot,” trainer John Bell said. “He was very tender for quite some time, so we lost all that work.” Putting the setback behind him, the son of Guillotine will revert back to the flat this weekend in the Woods Contracting 1400, where apprentice Donovan Cooper will claim three kilograms off his 56kg allocated weight. “He works up in a magnificent frame of mind every morning, he’s such an athlete and a stable favourite of course,” Bell said. “One thing now is that he’s fresh and he is a sprinter, so look for the grey.” Beyond Saturday’s contest, Bell has earmarked two lead-in runs before contesting the $150,000 hurdle feature at Te Rapa on September 15. “He’ll got to Rotorua (August 18), Te Aroha (September 1) then onto the big race, the Northern,” he said. The remainder of Bell’s contingent on Saturday includes Cleese, a horse he bred himself, running in the Callinan Family Taumarunui RSA Gold Cup (2200m). The Sweet Orange gelding finished well into third behind Wessex at Hastings over 1400m and steps up to a preferred staying trip in the feature. “All good stayers have a good sprint in them and he had that down at Hastings,” Bell said. “He’s worked on very well, he and Manawa worked up this morning together and were pleasing, so we’re hoping to get a positive run from both of them on Saturday.” Stablemate Manawa will line up in the Bob & Colleen Donaldson Memorial (1600m), while impressive debut winner Twain will make his second appearance in the New Zealand Farmers Livestock 1200. The son of Per Incanto powered away from his rivals at Tauranga earlier this month and will continue his association with apprentice Triston Moodley. “He’s a very delicate, beautiful moving animal and we have to be careful with the tracks we place him on that won’t do any damage,” Bell said. An $80-$90 million renovation to the existing grandstand at Churchill Downs Racetrack that will update ticketed seating is scheduled to begin in August with completion planned in time for the 151st GI Kentucky Derby in May 2025, the track said in a Wednesday release. The renovation of the Grandstand Club will transform existing outdoor aluminum bleachers into a combination of 8,300 new seating varieties. Updated options will include covered and uncovered stadium-style seats as well as rail boxes along the dirt track's outer rail that will offer a “trackside” seating experience where guests will be able to closely watch horses break from the Kentucky Derby Starting Gate. First-floor amenities for the Grandstand Club will include new and upgraded permanent concessions, bars and wagering windows. The project will also improve and add amenities for 2,800 guests in the existing third floor box seats under the Starting Gate Suites. The Grandstand Pavilion will create a more upscale social environment by converting the existing second-floor amenity area into a covered outdoor garden environment with new concessions, bars and wagering windows. Expansion to the second floor will create additional space for overall guest circulation and add an outdoor balcony for dining. A new entrance to the Grandstand Pavilion will unify the surrounding exterior architecture. “Like all of our recent enhancements at Churchill Downs, the renovation of the grandstands represents our commitment to providing unique guest seating options while honoring the historic significance of the property in order to achieve a world class sports and entertainment experience for our guests,” said Mike Anderson, President of Churchill Downs. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.–In his last eight starts, Skippylongstocking (Exaggrerator) has run at eight different racetracks. If trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. chooses the $1 million GI Whitney Stakes at Saratoga Race Course for the 5-year-old's next start, it will be nine. Joseph said he is mulling over what is next for Skippy, who was last seen finishing third–missing second by a head–in the GI Stephen Foster Stakes at Churchill Downs on June 29. That was his first start since winning the GII Oaklawn Handicap on April 20. Besides the Whitney, Joseph is considering the $1 million GII Charles Town Classic on Aug. 23–a race Skippylongstocking won last year–and the $1 million GI Jockey Club Gold Cup at Saratoga on Sept. 2. If Joseph decides on the Aug. 3 Whitney, he said he might also be able to make the Charles Town Classic. “Normally, he does better with spacing, but he is doing well here,” Joseph said outside his barn on the Saratoga backstretch Wednesday morning. Running in the Whitney has plenty of appeal, of course. It is a prestigious race, one of the most important on the calendar for older horses. “It's Saratoga,” Joseph said. “These are the races you want to win, there are no two ways about it. They are the races that put more horses in your barn.” Skippylongstocking had his first Saratoga work this season last Saturday and went four furlongs in :48 (5/138). Joseph said a final decision on what race will be next will come after Skippy works this weekend. The draw for the Whitney is Sunday. The expected favorite for the 1 1/8-mile race is National Treasure (Quality Road) from Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. National Treasure was last seen winning the GI Metropolitan Handicap on June 8. That race was held on the GI Belmont Stakes undercard, which was held at Saratoga. “Bar National Treasure, (Skippylongstocking) is up there with the rest of them right now,” Joseph said. “The race at Churchill showed that; it gave us some confidence.” Skippylongstocking will be making his 25th career start with his next race, more than any other horse that is nominated to the Whitney. Owned by Daniel Alonso, He has eight wins, two seconds and five third place finishes. He does not have a Grade I on his resume but has multiple graded stakes victories. “He has gotten better as he has gotten older,” Joseph said. “He has climbed the ladder because he has stayed consistent; some horses have consistently gone by the wayside but he has kept at it.” McPeek Barn Sends Out Another 3-Year-Old in Jim Dandy All during the spring, the barn of trainer Kenny McPeek was dominated by a pair of 3-year-olds: Mystik Dan (Goldencents), who won the GI Kentucky Derby and Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna), champ of the GI Kentucky Oaks. Thorpedo Anna has gone on to become the major player in the 3-year-old filly ranks with her wins in the GI Acorn Stakes and GI Coaching Club American Oaks. She might try the colts in the GI Travers Stakes at the end of August. McPeek has another horse in his barn that will try and make some noise this weekend when Gould's Gold (Goldencents) runs in the $500,000 GII Jim Dandy at Saratoga on Saturday. Gould's Gold, owned by Four G Racing, Lance Gasaway and Magdalena Racing (Sherri McPeek), will be ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr., also the pilot of Mystik Dan and Thorpedo Anna. Gould's Gold is the second longest price in the six-horse field at 15-1. “He could throw an upset at 'em,” McPeek said at his office at his barn at the Oklahoma Annex. “He could sneak in there and get a big piece of that.” McPeek said that with all the early speed signed on–Batten Down (Tapit), Seize the Grey (Arrogate) and Fierceness (City of Light)–the race could set up for a stalker. Like Gould's Gold. Gould's Gold has just a maiden win in six career starts and has two seconds and a third. In his first graded stakes appearance, he was second, beaten 13/4 lengths by Batten Down, in the GIII Ohio Derby. Batten Down is the 5-1 third choice on the Jim Dandy morning-line. “He has been working solid,” McPeek said. “But he has to find another level for sure. The way he worked here Saturday (four furlongs in 47.60 4/58), he very well could.” Romans Has High Hopes For 2-Year-Old Colt Keep It Easy It has been a while since trainer Dale Romans has had a big horse. He'll be the first to tell you that. “I don't get frustrated,” Romans said at his barn on the Saratoga backstretch. “They will come along. I have had plenty of good ones, more than my share.” Over the years, Romans has trained horses named Roses in May and Keen Ice and Little Mike and Promises Fulfilled, just to name a few. He's hoping that Keep It Easy (Hard Spun), a 2-year-old colt might add to his share. He has had just two starts, breaking his maiden by four lengths when going off at 23-1. In his first start, he was seventh of eight at 10-1 odds. “I didn't know they were going to give up on him that quickly,” Romans said. “Everyone liked their horse in that (second) race. And he just blew them away.” Sandman (Tapit), the even-money choice in the race, was a $1.2 million purchase at last March's Ocala Breeders' Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale. If all goes well with Keep It Easy, who is owned by St. Elias Stable, West Point Thoroughbreds and CJ Thoroughbreds, Romans plans on running him in the GII Saratoga Special on Aug. 10. “I think he is a top horse,” Romans said of the Kentucky-bred. “It's always nice to have something you are excited about. He has never had a bad day.” The post Saratoga Notebook, Presented by NYRA Bets: Trainer Joseph Looking at Three Options for ‘Consistent’ Skippy appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. MyRacehorse's Seize the Grey (Arrogate) recorded his final major work Tuesday ahead of an intended date in the GII Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga this weekend. Over Oklahoma's training track rated 'wet-fast,' the grey covered a half mile in :47.99. The GI Preakness Stakes winner shipped to Churchill Downs following a seventh-place finish in the GI Belmont Stakes June 8 before returning to the Spa earlier this month. “He was very strong and I'm very pleased with him,” said Lukas. “I told the rider to go :47 and a fifth, and she went :47 and four. Trainers are always going to tell you, 'He did it all within himself.' But I really was pleased. It sharpened him up I think and put him on his toes.” Exiting post 2, the colt will be reunited with Jaime Torres. Also representing this season's sophomore class, WSS Racing's Brightwork (Outwork), who hasn't been seen since finishing sixth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita last fall, is likely to mark her return in next weekend's GI Test Stakes, according to her trainer John Ortiz. The winner of last summer's GIII Adirondack Stakes and GI Spinaway Stakes. “That's the plan for now. So far, all systems are go,” said Ortiz. “Listen, we are in Saratoga, you go big or go home. She's proven herself before and I know I'm asking a lot of her, but at the same time there is nowhere else that we can go with her. I'm confident in her.” Brightwork worked five-furlongs from the gate in 1:00 flat over the Saratoga main track (2/23) July 21. Hall of Famer John Velazquez was up for the solo breeze. “She had the gate work 14 days out, just a little reminder [of the gate]. We wanted to do a little more than just a maintenance work, but at the same time, not too much,” said Ortiz. “She did that very well. I was very pleased. Johnny Velazquez was on her and he is very content with their effort.” Ortiz added that Brightwork will have one more maintenance work and if all goes well, she will enter the Test. If you didn't know the sophisticated people behind the mating, you might imagine that Puca went to Good Magic on no better premise than to double down on the alchemy implicit in both names. Because a puca (or pooka) in folklore is a shape-changing sprite, capable of bringing good or bad fortune. Shakespeare named Puck accordingly in A Midsummer Night's Dream, but my favourite example is Elwood P. Dowd's invisible drinking buddy Harvey, a rabbit standing just under six feet four inches. Perhaps you've noticed his silhouette at Harvey's Bar in downtown Lexington? If not, then check out the James Stewart movie, and meanwhile settle for a mare now resident down the road at Resolute Farm as the most celebrated Puca in town. TDN visited Puca and her latest son by Good Magic earlier this summer, after Dornoch's GI Belmont Stakes success elevated her to the select group of mares to have produced two Classic winners, his brother Mage having of course won the GI Kentucky Derby last year. In now adding the GI Haskell Stakes, Dornoch has consolidated his claims as crop leader–and so become a rising tide that floats all boats. Most obviously he has vindicated the $2.9 million purchase of his dam by John Stewart at Keeneland last November. Even as it was, her McKinzie yearling had made $1.2 million in the same ring a few weeks previously. And just about every step taken by Dornoch since, starting in the GII Remsen Stakes, has enhanced the value of a mare still only 12 years old. No wonder her weanling is nicknamed “Preakness” on the farm. Good Magic | Sarah Andrew But while Puca is now serving an ambitious new force, she's also working out nicely for others with a contrasting depth of experience–each, in their different way, outstanding exemplars for anyone trying to secure a lasting foothold in this most challenging of sports. Airdrie Stud, for instance, can now amplify the genes being recycled by Mage, who joined their roster this spring. Dornoch himself will eventually enter competition at Spendthrift, and it will be interesting to follow their fortunes, given the different approach of these two farms. Spendthrift candidly plays the numbers game, which essentially pitches lower fees against the risk of a market glut. Airdrie tends to be more restrained in book sizes, while gamely still setting value fees and trusting in an uncommon flair–one that's proving seamless, between one generation and the next–for identifying talent, and giving it a chance through an expertly assembled home herd. In fact its two most industrial rivals, Ashford and Spendthrift, owe big guns Uncle Mo and Into Mischief to Airdrie projects, in Indian Charlie and Harlan's Holiday respectively. Physically, Mage primarily evokes their sire; Dornoch, their dam. Both, however, are powerful adverts for their upbringing by the most venerable farm in town. Mage in the Derby | Coady Mage was the fourth Derby winner raised at Runnymede, founded in 1867 by the great-grandfather of current chairman/CEO, Brutus Clay III. With characteristic modesty, Clay deflects credit for the farm's commercial regeneration since the 2008 wake-up to Romain Malhouitre, who supervises day-to-day operations. Regardless, the arrival of Grandview Equine, breeders of Mage and Dornoch, itself illustrates the diversification these guys have achieved in the client base. Just like Airdrie, then, this is a farm with a great history now carrying forward its legacy in dynamic fashion–with a little help from Puca. But on this rising tide let's not forget the boat that launched Puca herself. Because her dam, Boat's Ghost, surely merits closer attention in pondering how her daughter by Big Brown has achieved stardom. After all, she had already contrived a Grade I winner by a stallion as unproductive as Powerscourt (GB). Her own sire Silver Ghost became more notorious, at stud, for his fiery temperament than for prolific success. But he left a respectable imprint as a broodmare sire–for instance through Ascend (Candy Ride {Arg}), Yonaguska (Cherokee Run) and Roadster (Quality Road)–and his mating with Rocktheboat (Summer Squall), a mare who otherwise produced limited results from limited opportunity, somehow stoked up embers in their daughter Boat's Ghost. Perhaps something clicked with Rocktheboat's damsire Native Royalty, by Raise A Native out of the important mare Queen Nasra, a daughter of Nasrullah. That's a strong echo of Silver Ghost's sire Mr Prospector: by Raise A Native, out of a mare by Nasrullah's great son Nashua. But don't forget that Silver Ghost himself belongs to the illustrious Gallorette family, his granddam Flight Dancer (Misty Flight) figuring as fourth dam of Gun Runner and third dam of Saint Liam. One way or another, to produce an outlier by Powerscourt as well as a history-making mare means that Boat's Ghost, herself stakes-placed in a light career, must be revisited as a mare of consequence. Good Magic colt out of Puca | Sara Gordon Which is pretty unfortunate for those who culled her, aged 19, for just $17,000 at the Keeneland January Sale last year, barely a fortnight before Mage made his belated debut. As a result, however, yet another of the most exemplary operations around is prospering from Dornoch's rise. For Boat's Ghost was purchased by Nursery Place, whose peerless standards will assuredly maximize the potential of daughters by Raging Bull (Fr) (acquired in utero) and now Hard Spun (Good Magic's damsire, incidentally). Unfortunately she missed this year, but the self-effacing master horseman who presides over Nursery Place is grateful for what they have. In fact he intends to race the Raging Bull, and refers to the Hard Spun as “a collector's item.” If that's a strong endorsement, rest assured that plans for now remain no more excitable than that she will “probably just hang out for a while.” Hearing that, you just feel that the confluence behind Puca of beneficiaries as diverse as Airdrie, Runnymede and Nursery Place–united by a conviction that if you do right by a horse, everything else will fall in place–can be no coincidence. THE STAR LIGHTING UP THORPEDO'S PAGE The colorful origins of Thorpedo Anna–the premature foaling of her dam, who was then kindly donated by her owner to the people looking after her so well–have understandably dominated her back story. And we have all relished, also, this fresh evidence that you don't need to be a tycoon or sheikh to strike gold somewhere along the line. (Albeit in our hearts we know that hardly any of us will get anywhere near Kenny McPeek's ability to spot the gleam of a hidden seam…) Thorpedo Anna takes the CCA Oaks | Coglianese But the fairytale element should not distract us from one or two fundamentals lurking in her page. Doubtless plenty of people out there will just be chucking her into their software as a Fast Anna-Uncle Mo cross; or, more likely, as a “Medaglia d'Oro line”-Uncle Mo cross, that kind of shorthand becoming necessary when sires are as inconvenient to any kind of “system” as Fast Anna before his sad loss to laminitis three years ago. For him to bequeath a filly as brilliant as Thorpedo Anna as his one and only graded stakes winner is enough to divert my attention to a far more luminously obvious powderkeg behind the GI Coaching Club American Oaks winner. Uncle Mo, then on the bubble at $27,500, has turned out to be a different class of stallion from almost all the others mated with Thorpedo Anna's granddam Pacific Sky. But that mare offered him some remarkable blood. Apart from anything else, she combined her damsire Seattle Slew as close as 3×2, her sire Stormy Atlantic being out of one of his daughters. Moreover we mustn't forget that Stormy Atlantic extends the storied Rough Shod bloodline, via his third dam Moccasin. And that line, in her pedigree, duly stands opposite one of the few that can look Rough Shod in the eye and ask for more. Because even producing two Grade I winners (Eskendereya by Giant's Causeway, and Balmont by Stravinsky) qualifies Pacific Sky's dam Aldebaran Light (Seattle Slew) as a fairly minor addition to the dynasty rooted in the mighty Almahmoud. Aldebaran Light (a half-sister to Grade II winner Blazonry {Hennessy}) gets to her along the Cosmah branch, her fourth dam being Halo's half-sister Queen Sucree (Ribot {GB})–herself responsible for Derby winner Cannonade (Bold Bidder). Pacific Sky's daughter by much her most potent mate was physically prevented from tapping into all this stuff, but such a concentration of big “brands,” so close up, surely explains Thorpedo Anna far better than scratching our heads over Fast Anna. Of course, Fast Anna represents a sireline that found, in Sadler's Wells, the most explosive combination of all between the Almahmoud and Rough Shod lines. And we could also mention that his damsire Rahy is out of a Halo mare; or even that his third dam, who additionally produced Kitten's Joy by Fast Anna's grandsire El Prado (Ire), was by Lear Fan–whose damsire Lt. Stevens was out of Rough Shod… But those are all straws floating in the wind. Feel free to reduce everything to data, formulas, systems. Good luck, and we'll see you at the racetrack. Some of us, at least, will always be grateful that the mystery abides. PRECOCITY DOES NOT EQUAL SPEED Interesting to see the brilliant program that produced Without Parole (among many others) launching a couple of his first crop at Saratoga last week. One ran a very promising fifth, the other won. Over the water, meanwhile, the son of Frankel (GB) has had five winners from just 17 starters on his doorstep at Newsells Park Stud. Without Parole | Amy Lanigan Starting out in Britain, Without Parole himself made his only juvenile appearance a few days before Christmas but rose quickly through the ranks to win the G1 St James's Palace Stakes on his fourth start. He's a half-brother to dirt miler Tamarkuz (Speightstown) out of a half-sister to two other accomplished dirt horses in Stay Thirsty (Bernardini) and Andromeda's Hero (Fusaichi Pegasus). The next dam, by Roberto, was second in four Grade I races, and opens six consecutive generations curated by King Ranch. Bearing in mind the transatlantic impact being made by Justify, the Gunthers are showing much bigger programs the way when it comes to reconciling the disastrous schism our industry has allowed to open between European and American gene pools. Without Parole could prove another two-way street, and maybe not just on grass either. I have never seen a turf champion that ran more like a dirt horse than Frankel. Without Parole stood for just £8,000 this year but does not have to look far for inspiration. His £17,500 neighbor Nathaniel (Ire) produced his ninth Group 1 winner in the G1 Irish Oaks last weekend. And yet European breeders still stampede to precocious sprint sires as an ostensible source of “commercial speed.” I hope they noted yesterday's TDN, which recorded Timeform's dismal verdict on the current European sprinters, continuing a pedestrian streak over the past five years. Remember the old saying: more haste, less speed. As Justify is showing, the continued viability in the U.S. of speed-carrying, two-turn stallions represents a huge opportunity for European commercial breeding. Approximately 40 students from Bottisham Village College attended a Racing to School event at The National Stud and Newmarket's July Course earlier this month. The Year 7 group were able to view stallions Lope Y Fernandez (Ire) and Stradivarius (Ire) at the stud, with several math-based activities held at the July Course. This visit followed on from the successful mock interviews Careers Event led by the charity back in February. The day was well supported by the horseracing industry with volunteer interviewers from both Newmarket racecourses offering advice and feedback to the Year 7 group before they embark on their chosen career and study paths. The partnership between Racing to School and the College, which began in 2022, has already supported the learning of over 270 pupils at unique events. Katie Neville-Jones, Careers Lead at the College said, “This day was a fantastic opportunity for our Year 7s to be inspired and enriched during our school's activity week. It is great to continue to work together with Racing to School after a few years, and to open up more opportunities in the future.” The post Bottisham Village College Students Attend Racing To School Event appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. The Horse Racing Women's Summit (HRWS) hosted their second event of the year with panels and networking opportunities taking place at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame on Tuesday, July 23 in Saratoga Springs, New York, the organization said in a Wednesday release. “To be clear, this is not an event where women get together to discuss female challenges,” said Shona Rotondo, Chair of the HRWS Marketing & Communications Committee. “It's an event that brings together intelligent and successful industry professionals to discuss the challenges of our sport with the ultimate goal being to connect and share ideas that become the building blocks of future innovation.” Sessions began with a keynote conversation led by Liza Lazarus, CEO of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA), that was hosted by Donna Barton Brothers, a racing analyst for NBC Sports. “I'm really delighted that there are a number of initiatives, certainly also like this, around women,” said Lazarus. “It's really important to me that we have a lot of women in the industry. My senior leadership team is more than half women.” Lazarus and Brothers not only discussed HISA and the progress being made across the country, but also delved into the topics of challenges and strategies for balancing a career and family, the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and the need for professionalization and technological advancement in the industry. “We can't stay in the dark ages. If we want to continue to build the incredible legacy that horse racing has, we've got to take advantage of the tools that are available to us. We have to professionalize,” said Lazarus. Panel at the HRWS Saratoga Conference | HRWS The first panel of the day, entitled 'Prioritizing the Equine Athlete,' featured panelists Jena Antonucci, Classic-winning trainer; Tina Bond, President of the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association; Jane McMahon, Manager of McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds; and Dr. Martha Misheff, DVM. Moderated by Laura Simiele, the speakers emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and confidence in the equine athlete lifecycle, from breeding to racing and beyond. “The minute you feel your ego is more important than the well-being of the horse you are caring for, find a new job,” said Antonucci. The second panel, entitled 'After Racing: Options Beyond Racing' and moderated by Rachel Dunn, was led by panelists Keri Brion, Multiple Graded Stakes-winning Flat and Steeplechase Trainer; Lisa Malloy, Program Director of ReRun Inc.; Jen Roytz, Co-Owner/Manager of Brownstead Farm; Kim Weir, Director of Strategic Growth at Therapeutic Horses of Saratoga. With backgrounds across all aspects of not only the racing industry, but the equine world as a whole, the group discussed the importance of considering and preparing Thoroughbreds for a second career. “Aftercare is not a bad word, but it's not accurate,” said Weir. “It's not 'after' at all, it's a continuum of care. It's like the college athlete going on to their real world job after school.” A conversation with Jane Lyon, owner of Summer Wind Farm, about the full-circle journey of the Thoroughbred, hosted by Stephanie Hronis, HRWS Executive Committee Member and Thoroughbred owner, closed out the day's programming. The next event on the 2024 HRWS calendar is the annual Horse Racing Women's Summit, set for Sept. 25-27 in Arcadia, California. To learn more and purchase tickets, click here. Canadian champion 2-year-old colt Truth of It All (Proud Truth) died peacefully from natural causes at age 34 on Wednesday, July 24 at Hurstland Farm in Midway, Kentucky, according to a press release from the farm. By Darby Dan stallion Proud Truth, Truth of It All was born at Hurstland to MGSW Cup of Honey (Raise a Cup) Feb. 26, 1990. Trained by Sheldon Wolfe, Truth of It All won the 1993 edition of the GIII Grey Stakes en route to taking home the Sovereign Award for the top juvenile male. He also competed in the Kentucky Derby that year and finished 10th to winner Sea Hero (Polish Navy). Rescued after his last race–a claiming event at Los Alamitos Sept. 14, 1997–he was offered to Hurstland's Alfred Nuckols, Jr. for retirement. “After the Sovereign Award he received for Hurstland as his breeder and the wonderful experience he took me on with Al and Marge Schmidt and Sheldon Wolfe, I told them that he had a home at Hurstland as long as I had a farm,” said Nuckols. “I picked him up with then farm manager, Tim Overton, in our box van and we returned him, after a short ride, to his birthplace at Hurstland where he enjoyed the last 27 years of his life, constantly enjoying his peppermints.” Affectionately nicknamed “Dennis the Menace” by Wolfe, Truth of It All had side gigs as a baby sitter for weanlings early in his retirement. In 2020, the pensioner was paired with Doc's Leading Lady (Doc's Leader)–granddam to MGSW Get Smokin (Get Stormy) who was also bred by Hurstland. Vladimir Cespedes, an owner, exercise rider and stable employee based at Parx Racing was found in possession of an electrical device and illegal human narcotics on Monday, July 23, during an integrity sweep of the barn area which was led by Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission (PSHRC) investigators who were in coordination with the racetrack and the Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association (PTHA), according to a stewards' ruling (24172PP) posted on the Commission's portal. That same day, Cespedes was summarily suspended by the stewards for a potential violation of 7 PA Code Section 305.273 (h) and 185.2, and Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) Rule 2273. The Keystone State rule book's Section 305.273, which applies to a jockey and apprentice license, as well as owners, makes it unlawful for them to be in possession or control of any shocking device. Also, section 185.2–conduct of licensee–bans inappropriate, illegal or unethical conduct which violates the state's rules for racing. The integrity of the sport and public perception of the industry are covered under this provision. Finally, HISA Rule 2273 specifically states that no covered horse may have an electrical or mechanical device used on them at any time on racetrack grounds or during a workout. According to Jason Klouser, the director of enforcement for the PSHRC, searches like the one performed on Monday at Parx are part of a wider program in Pennsylvania to catch perpetrators by working with local organizations who are integral to their program. Members of the investigative team at Parx | PSHRC “The team was able to catch this individual because we used concentrated tactics,” said Klouser. “It included our own people, but also members of the Organization of Racing Investigators. For the sake of these horses, I am just glad we found this device when we did.” Jeff Matty, the executive director of the PTHA, said, “The PTHA is proud of our collaborative efforts with the Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission in conjunction with Parx Racing. We strive for a fair and level playing field across the board, along with a safe and secure backstretch community. Efforts like this ensure that is achieved.” As for Cespedes's horses that he owns through Yellow Stripe Stable, Klouser confirmed that Wynn Giant (Freud), who is trained by Ilias Tapsas, was scratched from the twelfth race at Parx on Monday. Also, Angelus Warrior (Jersey Town), who is trained by Osvaldo Rojas, was scratched from the first race at Parx on Tuesday. The licensee does have the right to appeal the decision with a written response within 10 days of the violation. Per the ruling, during the suspension Cespedes is denied access to all grounds under the jurisdiction of the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday, July 25 to determine whether the summary suspension will remain in place. Then a future disciplinary hearing will formally hear the merits of the case. Cespedes's last violation occurred in late November of 2023 which resulted in a fine of $100.00 for failing to follow the instructions of an outrider and disrespect for that individual. The G1 July Cup winner Mill Stream (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) will bid to maintain his unblemished Deauville record when he returns to the Normandy seaside for a crack at the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest on August 4. “He loves travelling so there are no worries there,” says his trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam, who has once again demonstrated her skills in guiding the four-year-old through the grades to the very top. He is currently the co-highest-rated sprinter in Europe with a Timeform mark of 122, and it was at this time last year that he first came to wider prominence by winning the Listed Prix Moonlight Cloud. On the same card, his half-brother Asymmetric (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) won the Listed Prix du Cercle. For a time the elder of the pair, who had also won the G2 Richmond Stakes, held the bragging rights, but Mill Stream, with his Group 1 credentials, as well as picking up a Group 3 and Group 2 along the way, has now surpassed Asymmetric. In so doing, he has given another major boost to his breeders, the Murphy family of Redpender Stud. In the Chapple-Hyam stable Mill Stream has filled the void left by the dual Group 1 winner Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), who subsequently sold for 3.6 million gns to Najd Stud at the Tattersalls December Sale. “We all need that big horse,” says the trainer. “We all know how hard it is to find one, and it's getting harder and harder to hold onto them, too. Anything that's good, the phone's ringing.” There's little doubt that the stallion farms have been circling for Mill Stream, but Chapple-Hyam is in the fortunate position of already having been told by the colt's owner Peter Harris that his star performer will stay in training at the age of five. Harris, a former trainer and breeder, whose successes in both spheres notably include the G1 Middle Park Stakes winner Primo Valentino (Ire), held a dispersal of his Pendley Farm stock at Tattersalls in 2010. But he has remained a regular visitor to Park Paddocks and, with the help of bloodstock agent Anthony Stroud, has made significant investment in young stock to race. “It has been terrific to be able to reward him with a Group 1 winner,” says Chapple-Hyam. “Peter having been a trainer, he understands that there are more lows than highs, and he's a good sounding board and a great support to the yard. “I'm lucky he knocked on my door. I didn't know him before that; I got a call, and that was that.” She continues, “It's nice for him to get something back as it's been hard work on his behalf as he walks around Tattersalls and looks at all the yearlings for Book 1 and Book 2, so it's good that his homework has paid dividends.” Mill Stream's longer-term targets include the Haydock Sprint Cup and the British Champions Sprint at Ascot in October, but in the immediate future a clash with Puchkine (Fr) and co is on the cards at a course where he is two-for-two. “It's an extended six,” Chapple-Hyam says of the Maurice de Gheest, “but going on how he hit the line in the July Cup I don't think it will be a problem, and he likes the track. “There wouldn't be a Breeders' Cup on the cards because Peter is happy to keep him in training next year so I don't want to run the risk of sending him there.” Among the dozen or so horses she has in training for Harris is the two-year-old Echalar (Ire), who is set to make his debut at Ascot on Saturday in the British EBF Crocker Bulteel Maiden. The trainer clearly holds the half-brother to G3 Chester Vase winner Youth Spirit (Ire) and Listed winner Canberra Legend (Ire) in some regard and has also given him a Gimcrack entry. “He's a lovely Too Darn Hot colt and he has trained well,” she says. “I'll be expecting a big show from him, but we're up against some horses who have already run second. It's going to be a hot little maiden.” Mill Stream's memorable July Cup victory was made all the sweeter by a double that day at Newmarket being brought up by the filly Asian Daze (Ire). The star of the first crop of Frontiersman (GB) had already won three times for Johnny Murtagh and was bought by Gai Waterhouse at the Goffs London Sale for £200,000. Asian Daze winning in the colours of Gai Waterhouse | Racingfotos “It was an honour to get the call from Gai to train her and, thank God, we got the job done,” she says, though the trainer has already had to bid farewell to the three-year-old who will eventually head south for Chapple-Hyam's native country, Australia. “She's a tough little nugget and her character is like that as well. She left this morning for quarantine. It was nice that they ran her and she won, so she goes down there 104-rated and I'd be surprised if she doesn't get black type in Australia.” She adds, “I've known Gai over the years but it was a call out of the blue and, like I said, it was an honour. It's such a shame that Gai wasn't here this year, because usually she attends the July Cup, but she had commitments back in Australia. “You could see how tough the filly is by the way she fought back when she got headed. She got a great ride from Billy Loughnane and he's going to go out [to Australia] in the winter to have six weeks with Gai, which will be a brilliant experience for him. It all worked out well.” Mill Stream is not the only member of Chapple-Hyam's stable who will be having his passport stamped for France this year, as she is also planning a Deauville raid with the three-year-old Sons And Lovers (GB) (Study Of Man {Ire), who has been both Group 3 and Listed-placed this season. “I'm going to send him to Deauville on the 11th to the Prix Nureyev,” she says. “I feel he's still progressing and, back in his own age group, let's give it a go. You just never know going over to France, but he has a great attitude and character so I think he'll travel fine. He's not a worrier. “He'll be bigger and stronger as a four-year-old but the door is being knocked at.” The trainer is clearly no stranger to success in Deauville, where Saffron Beach also landed the G1 Prix Rothschild two years ago, and it would be no surprise if Sons And Lovers is the next member of her stable to come bursting through that door. Star stayer Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is set to spearhead the Ballydoyle team at Goodwood next week when he lines up in the G1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup on the opening day of the meeting, Tuesday, July 30. The six-year-old spent the first few months of last season on the sidelines due to injury, denying him the opportunity to try and defend the Goodwood Cup crown he won so memorably when beating Stradivarius (Ire) and Trueshan (Fr) in a thrilling contest in 2022. However, this year he's set to return to West Sussex with an unblemished record of three wins from three starts so far in 2024, culminating with a gutsy performance at Royal Ascot where he regained the Gold Cup title he also won in 2022. Now a five-time Group 1 winner, Kyprios is reported to be in rude health ahead of the feature race on Tuesday's card, with trainer Aidan O'Brien describing stayers of his calibre as “very rare”. “Kyprios is lazy in his work, but we're very happy with him,” said O'Brien. “Everything has gone well since Ascot. “He's a very special horse and has a lot of class. He has a lot more class than most people think. He does stay which is unusual, but he'd have no problem being a group horse over a mile and a quarter. As he goes up in distance, he just gets better. Those good stayers are very rare. When you go to those distances, very few horses get them really, but he has the class and gets the trip as well.” Discussing the injury which forced Kyprios to miss last year's Goodwood Cup, O'Brien added, “It was a long process. At one stage we didn't think he'd live, but when he got through that part, we had to teach him how to use his joint and walk again. When he started walking again, he had to walk on a very slow treadmill with bails on either side of him to stop him falling over. That should tell you where he came from. “It's incredible really–I never thought he would race ever again. There are so many people I should be mentioning who were involved in getting him back so all credit to them.” O'Brien is also set to be represented in the other two Group 1 races at the Qatar Goodwood Festival, with Henry Longfellow (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) bound for the Qatar Sussex Stakes and Opera Singer (Justify) an intended runner in the Qatar Nassau Stakes. Unbeaten in three starts as a two-year-old, Henry Longfellow was last seen finishing second in the G1 St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, while Opera Singer was also in action at that meeting when filling the same position in the G1 Coronation Stakes. “We're looking forward to him in Goodwood,” O'Brien said of Henry Longfellow. “We always thought he was a special horse based on what he did last year. We were over the moon with his run at Royal Ascot. “If we'd got a clearer run in France, we would have known more going into Ascot, so we went into Ascot just learning about him. There's every chance he'll progress.” “We were delighted with Opera Singer at Ascot,” he continued. “The other horse who led just messed up her pace a little bit, but we were over the moon with her. “We were always going to step up to go to a mile and a quarter in the Qatar Nassau Stakes with her after that. We're very happy with her and everything has gone well since Ascot. “She has an incredible pedigree and is by Justify which just makes her extra special. We think she'll be happy with the trip and track and she can probably go even further too.” The post Ballydoyle Assemble Star-Studded Team for the Qatar Goodwood Festival appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Karl Burke trainee Miss Lamai (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}–Tough Spirit {Ire}, by Iffraaj {GB}) bounced back off a close-up fourth in last month's G2 Queen Mary Stakes to secure a career high in Wednesday's Arqana Irish EBF Marwell Stakes at Naas. The 10-11 favourite, a debut winner at Thirsk in April and runner-up in May's Listed Marygate Stakes at York, raced off the pace towards the rear through the initial fractions of this five-furlong dash. Powering forward on the bridle once past halfway, she came under pressure to launch her challenge approaching the final furlong and was driven out in the closing stages to defeat Make Haste (GB) (Blue Point {Ire}) by 1 3/4 lengths. The long-time leader Shamrock Breeze (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) was a head adrift in third with the fast-finishing Merrily (No Nay Never) a nose further back in fourth. “She's a good, tough filly and I thought that, if she ran up to either of her last two runs, she would be hard to beat, although you never know with two-year-old fillies,” said Burke. “We walked the track and when I watch Naas on TV, they are always coming stands' side and it walked that way as well. I said to Cliff [Lee] if they all go the other way to make sure he was on this side to make his challenge and, if they split, to definitely come this way. I think that helped. She got caught in the last 50 yards in the Marygate and at Royal Ascot they were spread across the track and she never got cover. That's the first time I've really seen her finish off her race. I've always thought she'd be a better filly with a bit of cover and that's worked out today. She's in the [G2] Lowther and we'll discuss that. This is huge for [owner] Chris [Hirst], who lives in Thailand, as he's building up a broodmare band.” Miss Lamai is the third of five foals and one of three scorers produced by a winning half-sister to Grand Prix de Vichy victrix One For Bobby (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). The March-foaled bay's second dam, multiple Group-placed Listed Owenstown Stud Stakes winner One Spirit (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), is out of a half-sister to dual Group 1-winning sire Diktat (GB) (Warning {GB}). Miss Lamai is a half-sister to the stakes-placed Spirit Of Camelot (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), a yearling colt by Australia (GB) and a weanling filly by Blackbeard (Ire). Listed success!
