By Mike Love Greg and Nina Hope will be looking to continue their successful weekend today at Addington, following on from their very good trotter Mr Love’s success on Friday night. Co-trainer Nina Hope believes they have the team to make that happen. Their first chance comes in race 3,the Loburn Sawmill For All Your Firewood & Timber Needs Pace over 2000m when Christian Bale ($7.00FF) lines up on debut with driver John Dunn. The three-year-old Vincent gelding qualified up north for Andre Poutama in November last year before a stint with Ray Green. He transferred to the Hopes at the end of May this year. “He’s a big horse out of Helena Jet which we trained. Their feet weren’t the best so we thought the beach might be good for him”, says Hope. “He’s still really green and will definitely improve with the run. The motor is there but has a few things to learn.” Westar Molly ($6.50FF) lines up in race 6, the “He’s All Go” The Wonder Dog (Junior Drivers) mobile pace over 1980m. The six-year-old Changeover mare will be driven by stable employee Henry Sail who will be looking to continue his recent success in the colours. “She’s a tough wee thing. The draw is a bit wider than we would’ve liked. It’s a good even field today, so she will need a bit of luck but she’s in a good space at the moment.” Hope describes Lady Vincent ($3.70FF) as one of their better chances of the day when she lines up in race 7, the ‘Buy Kiwi Made’ Standing At Wai Eyre Farm pace over 2000m with Ricky May in the bike. The four-year-old Vincent mare has been racing consistently well and deserves a maiden victory. “The only miss she’s had was a couple of starts back where she tied up a bit. But she has trained on well and is really well within herself. I expect her to do well.” “She’s probably our best chance of the day.” The colours stay on May as he steers Freya ($4.60FF) in race 8, the Thanks To My Loyal Owners And Supporters Mobile Trot over 1980m. A half sister to the aforementioned Friday night winner Mr Love, Hope believes the daughter of Volstead will still be competitive despite not being completely happy with her. “The draw shouldn’t worry her. She will probably just go back then use her high speed. Sitting parked last start wasn’t really her go.” “She is a very nice horse and does have a few issues. We know we don’t have her at 100% at the moment but she should still be very competitive.” Finally in race 9, the Thanks Rangiora Equine Services mobile pace over 2600m, Krystal Delight ($5.50FF) will step out for driver Ricky May. “She will go another nice race. She just gets out there and gives one hundred percent every time. Although I do prefer her over the 1980m, she has won once and placed five times over the 2600m.” The Hopes have trained 17 winners so far this season. Racing commences from 12:40pm. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.–After five career starts without a win, enough was enough. It was time for a change for 3-year-old colt Reynolds Channel (West Coast). Or two. Or three. Co-owner Lee Einsidler huddled with Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and the following modifications were made: new distance, new jockey, and an equipment change. “I'm just glad he didn't change trainers,” Mott said late Saturday afternoon. Mott could laugh and so could Einsidler because they were both standing in the winner's circle at Saratoga Race Course. Reynolds Channel finally got there. He won Saturday's eighth race, a $100,000 maiden special weight event for 3-year-olds and up with a solid two-length victory. Reynolds Channel, a $300,000 purchase by Einsidler's LRE Racing LLC and partner Mike Francesa's JEH Racing Stable LLC, had a total makeover for Saturday. After running at 1 1/8 miles in his last three races, Reynolds Channel shortened up to seven furlongs. He had worn blinkers in his last two starts. They came off Saturday. Jockey Junior Alvarado, Mott's go-to rider, was in the saddle for the first time. Mott and Einsidler made all the right moves. “I don't let racing frustrate me,” Einsidler said. “It is so special. If you are going to let it bother you, you shouldn't do it. We were a little disappointed in the (prior) results because he trained like a horse that was going to handle two turns. It just didn't work out. When we came here today, I thought it would be his day.” Alvarado kept Reynolds Channel in close contact in the field of 12 and made his move heading into the stretch. His long stride gobbled up pacesetter Hurricane Nelson (Khozan) just outside the eighth pole and Reynolds Channel won going away. He went off at odds of 9-1 and paid $21.60 while being timed in 1:23.12. Reynolds Channel is named for a Long Island body of water which was frequented by both Einsidler and Francesa, New York natives. Einsidler fished there. Francesa swam and clammed there. On a trip back home from Florida after a race a few years ago, they made a pact to name this horse after a favorite place they had on common. Reynolds Channel was picked out for Einsidler by bloodstock agent Mike Ryan at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. “(Ryan) said that if he had a bigger pedigree, if he was by a big-time sire, he is a $2 million horse,” Einsidler said. “(West Coast) is not exactly on fire, but physically, Mike said we should own this horse. When you want to picture what a racehorse should look like, he should look like him. Big. Long neck. Big behind. That doesn't necessarily mean he is going to go 1 1/8 miles. Very few of them do.” Reynolds Channel was bred by Edwin Anthony in Kentucky. He is out of the mare Noelle's Mischief by Into Mischief. Mott saw a horse that might have a future from the start. When he began working him, Reynolds Channel showed a stride that suggested distance would be no problem. “But when we put him to the test, and actually asked him to do 1 1/8 miles, he didn't do it,” Mott said. “So, we shortened him up. Seven furlongs can be a very difficult race in itself, but he was fit enough to do it.” “If I have a horse that is not winning, I put him where I believe he can win,” said Einsidler said. That happened Saturday. And now, Reynolds Channel is a maiden no more. #KeeSept grad Reynolds Channel impresses at Saratoga! SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Well-named Tough Catch (Complexity) could not be caught Saturday, leading every step of the way to capture the seventh race, a $100,000 5½-furlong maiden special weight contest for 2-year-olds at Saratoga Race Course. Tough Catch's victory added to Complexity's (Maclean's Music) remarkable start with his first crop of runners. According to the TDN's Sire List, Complexity, who stands at Airdrie Stud, entered the day with 11 winners from 15 starters, 73.3 percent. The Tough Catch score for trainer Dallas Stewart made it an even dozen and sent his connections, On Our Own Stable, Sport of Kings Racing, Gervais Racing, Zak Stables and Stewart, to the winner's enclosure at America's oldest racetrack for a round of smiles, laughter and photos. Under Luis Saez, the gray or roan colt out of the Broken Vow mare Try to Catch Her, won by three-quarters of a length in his career debut over Innovator (Authentic) in 1:04.63. Sent off a 6-1 in the field of nine, he paid $15 to win. Though bumped a bit at the start by Moment's Notice (More Than Ready) leaving from the inside post, Tough Catch quickly was in front and held that position at every call of the race. He had a three-length lead at the top of the stretch, but had to hold off Innovator, who was prominent throughout from his outside post position. Tough Catch turned in a smoking first quarter in 21.75 seconds and turned in a second quarter in 23.25. With 50 percent, Sport of Kings is the majority partner in the group that owns Tough Catch, who brought $280,000 at the OBS April 2-year-old in training sale. Some 90 days after the purchase, the group had a Saratoga winner, who may be headed to the GI Hopeful Stakes on closing day, Sept. 2. “It's [by] Complexity, so it's got a pretty good pedigree,” said Michael Kares, a founding partner of Sport of Kings. “After we bought the horse, Complexity really started to develop and has a bunch of winners this year. We just liked the girth and the depth of the horse. He's extremely fast. He had great workouts down at OBS. We bought the horse with Dallas and Dallas had some partners, who we formed a great partnership with a bunch of people who live around the country. It's just been a great experience.” Kares grew up in the New York City area and was first introduced to racing by his grandfather with visits to Yonkers Raceway. He has owned horses – off and on, he noted – for about 30 years. Now a resident of Traverse City, Mich., he was in on the formation of what he described as a “boutique partnership” less than two years ago. Kares was at the sale when Tough Catch was purchased. “He just looked extremely athletic and talented,” Kares said. “Really looked the part. Acted well. Mature. We didn't really feel like we had to do too much work to him. We bought him, got this opportunity and things just fell into place. No injuries. Feeling real sound. We got Saez and he did a fantastic job. He got a little tired at the end, but that's to be expected first time out.” Kares said his group is involved in other 2-year-olds and said it is looking forward to a start by Eighty West (Speightstown) who was second in his debut at Churchill Downs on June 23. Tough Catch's quick start did not surprise Kares and the rest of the ownership group. “We expected that,” he said. “We didn't know if it would hold up, but we definitely expected the speed, which we got. The rest was history.” #1 Tough Catch looked good on debut in the seventh at Saratoga! @luissaezpty piloted the 2YO colt for trainer @DallasStewart3. pic.twitter.com/3o6fHRs8X0 — TwinSpires Racing (@TwinSpires) July 13, 2024 7th-Saratoga, $100,000, Msw, 7-13, 2yo, 5 1/2f, 1:04.63, ft, 3/4 length. TOUGH CATCH (c, 2, Complexity–Try to Catch Her, by Broken Vow) broke like a seasoned veteran from the inside stall on his career debut and showed his rivals a clean set of heels throughout to become a 12th first-crop winner for his Airdrie-based stallion (by Maclean's Music). A check of the May 2 foal's worktab shows a couple of very strong works from the gate, including a half in :46 4/5 (2/27) at Churchill Downs July 2 prior to shipping to the Spa, and he went well under-tack at OBS this April, covering a furlong in :10 flat. Sent off at 13-2, the grey colt shot to the lead in the opening exchanges and covered his first quarter-mile in :21.75. Maintaining a safe margin around the turn, Tough Catch was by the half in :45 flat and was never in danger as Innovator (Authentic), a $900,000 KEESEP grad, ran an improved race second time out to complete the exacta. A half-brother to Unique Factor (The Factor), SP, $219,173, Tough Catch is out of a daughter of Pin Oak Stud's GI Selene Stakes winner See How She Runs (Maria's Mon), also the dam of MGSW Don't Leave Me (Lemon Drop Kid). Canadian champion turf horse Hasten To Add (Cozzene) appears under the third dam. Try to Catch Her produced a filly by Cyberknife this past Feb. 8. War Front Filly Bullet Speeds Home In My Dear
Wandering Eyes posted a topic in The Rest of the World
Having resisted the urge to take up an assignment at Royal Ascot after making a successful racecourse debut in the May 11 Royal Palm Juvenile Turf, D J Stable's Bullet (War Front) switched to a synthetic surface for Saturday's My Dear S. and posted an equally eyecatching success. Drawn gate seven, the $425,000 Keeneland September yearling raced in a share of fourth and four off the inside into the turn. Forced to concede ground as Carlisle Bay began to get away at the five-sixteenths, Bullet easily gathered that one up under hand encouragement a furlong and a half from home and shot clear to score like a 1-2 chalk should. “She's one of them, trust me she's one of them,” said winning jockey Patrick Husbands, when asked where Bullet ranks on the list of the best 2-year-old fillies he's ridden. “You could do anything with this filly. You can go to the lead, you can do anything. She's all class–you can do anything with her.” Bullet is out of a winning daughter of 2000 champion 3-year-old filly Surfside, who was purchased by Gainesway for $500,000 in foal to Giant's Causeway at Keeneland November in 2009, an in-utero purchase that became GSW Irish Surf. Third dam Flanders was the Eclipse Award-winning juvenile filly of 1994 when winning the GI Spinaway Stakes, GI Frizette Stakes and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Whitebeam Goes Gate To Wire, Repeats In Diana
Wandering Eyes posted a topic in The Rest of the World
Whitebeam (GB) (Caravaggio) gave Chad Brown his ninth win in the GI Diana Stakes Saturday and defended her title as last year's winner in a gate-to-wire effort. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – With apologizes to the rest of the horse population spending the summer at Saratoga Race Course, the most popular Thoroughbred on the grounds is the dominating 3-year-old filly Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna). Winner of all three of her starts this season–by a combined 13 1/4 lengths–Thorpedo Anna took her next step towards the July 20 GI Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga early Saturday morning. With regular rider Brian Hernandez, Jr. on board, Thorpedo Anna worked five furlongs in 1:01.55 (5/20) on the Oklahoma Training Track. She hit the track at 5:30 a.m. along with stablemate Gould's Gold (Goldencents), a 3-year-old colt who is being pointed to the GII Jim Dandy at Saratoga on July 27. “She is a total pro,” trainer Kenny McPeek said right after the work. “I wanted her to go eyeball-to-eyeball with another horse. And (Gould's Gold) is a good horse. She needed someone to keep her interested.” Normally, Thorpedo Anna works by herself. When asked when the last time Thorpedo Anna worked in company, he laughed. “In the (GI) Acorn,” he said, referring to her last start, a 5 1/2-length romp at Saratoga on June 7. This was the fourth work since the Acorn for Thorpedo Anna, who has also won the GI Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs and the GII Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park this year. “She just cruised around there and galloped out well,” Hernandez said back at the barn. “We went off in :13 and change and going into the turn, she switched leads and I let her pick it up and, from there, she was in hand the whole way. She is one of those rare fillies that is just so naturally fast that she wants to get pretty quick.” McPeek has not ruled out a run against colts in the GI Travers Stakes on Aug. 24. First though, he wants to see how she does in the Coaching Club American Oaks. Pletcher's Haskell Trio Put In Final Works At Spa Right now, the plan is to run three horses in the GI Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park on July 20. Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher said he will make a final decision early next week on whether or not all of them–Fierceness (City of Light), Mindframe (Constitution) and Tuscan Sky (Vino Rosso)–make the trip south to the Jersey Shore. Saturday, the trio made their Haskell cases to the boss as they had their final works before the $1-million race on the main track at Saratoga. Fierceness outside Emmanuel | Sarah Andrew Fierceness, the GI Florida Derby winner and a failure as the favorite in the GI Kentucky Derby (15th place), worked five furlongs under exercise rider Danny Wright and was timed in 1:00.47 (2/19) while working in company with 5-year-old multiple graded stakes winner Emmanuel (More Than Ready). “I thought Fierceness was really impressive, like he can be when he is in good form,” Pletcher said outside his barn at the Oklahoma Training Track. “Not so much the time, but how effortlessly he was going around there. He looked fantastic.” Fierceness and Emmanuel came on the track after the 6:30 a.m. renovation break Mindframe and exercise rider Carlos Quevedo worked a half-mile in company with 5-year-old mare Surprisingly (Mastery) after the 8:30 a.m. renovation break. They were timed in :49.49 seconds (49/100). Tuscan Sky, who won last start, Monmouth's Pegasus Stakes on June 15–which brings an automatic bid to the Haskell–worked four furlongs in :49.85 (69/100) right after the Fierceness move. Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano was aboard for the move, which came in company with 3-year-old maiden Artempus (Real Solution). “I was looking for more maintenance works for them,” Pletcher said of Mindframe and Tuscan Sky. “They have run more recently. Tuscan Sky is, historically, not a real ambitious work horse. I thought he did everything well in hand. Javier was on cruise control throughout. Mindframe looked like he was just galloping. He could not have done it any easier.” Besides figuring out who will be heading to Jersey, Pletcher has to decide when his horses will ship to Monmouth. “They lifted the requirement of having to be there three days in advance,” he said. “I probably don't want to chance (going on race day) that. We do it for other races all the time, but I don't know if I want to do it for that one.” Dornoch Continues To Impress Gargan Trainer Danny Gargan's confidence continues to grow when it comes to his 3-year-old stable star Dornoch (Good Magic). Fresh off his win in the GI Belmont Stakes at Saratoga last month, Dornoch put his final work in before he starts in the GI Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park on July 20. Dornoch (blinkers) and Society Man | Sarah Andrew With jockey Luis Saez on board, Dornoch worked four furlongs in :47.88 (12/100) on the main track while working in company with Society Man (Good Magic), the recent winner of the GIII Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs. Society Man was ridden Saturday by exercise rider Priscilla Schaefer. “He was just galloping out there,” Gargan said back at his barn on the Spa backstretch. “I wanted him to go in :48 flat. That is what we wanted and that is what we got.” Dornoch's Belmont win thrust him into the conversation as to who is the best 3-year-old colt in the land. Gargan, of course, says there should be heavy consideration given to his horse, who also owns a win in the GII Fountain of Youth. He acknowledges that GI Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan (Goldencents) is the leader right now, but if Dornoch can get the Haskell and then take the GI Travers, there will be a new leader in the clubhouse. “If he does, he definitely is,” Gargan said. “We always enjoy when he gets a chance to run. If he runs his race, he is fun to watch.” The post Saratoga Notebook, Presented by NYRA Bets: The Beat Goes On For Thorpedo Anna appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Sunday's racing is more low-key than we have been used to this week, but Chantilly stage a significant juvenile staging post in the G2 Prix Robert Papin in which Rockcliffe Stud's Listed Empress Stakes winner Celandine (GB) (Kingman {GB}) takes the next step in her career. With Arabian Dusk (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) boosting that Newmarket form, the Ed Walker-trained homebred takes pole position for this six-furlong contest which also hosts Mohamed Saeed Al Shahi's course-and-distance G3 Prix du Bois scorer Arabie (GB) (Dandy Man {Ire}). Strangely exclusively contested by foreign runners, including the G3 Premio Primi Passi winner Korisa (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), the feature sets a trend with the card's G3 Darley Prix Chloe being the target of Juddmonte's visiting TDN Rising Star Skellet (Ire) (Kingman {GB}). After four straight appearances against open turf sprinters, Godolphin's Star of Mystery (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) returns to her own age group as the likely odds-on favorite for Sunday's GIII Quick Call Stakes at Saratoga. Oaklawn Park President Louis Cella will deliver the keynote address at the 2024 Global Symposium on Racing at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort this December. Under Cella's leadership, Oaklawn has consistently expanded its racing footprint by lengthening the racing schedule, building a $100-million casino/hotel and by introducing fan-friendly entertainment options, leading to increased attendance and handle. “Under Mr. Cella's leadership, Oaklawn expanded their racing season into December while keeping both their on-track and simulcasting business strong,” said Robert Hartman, Race Track Industry Program Chair. “Their racing product continues to strengthen as evidenced by the winners of the 2024 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks both taking the Arkansas route.” Symposium attendees can expect insights on integrating casino wagering and horse racing to support and expand the sport. Additionally, Cella will discuss how bold moves and investments in the industry can attract crowds and introduce a new generation of fans to horse racing. “Our success boils down to having a Regulatory body, HBPA and track management who work together for the well-being of the horse and the future of horse racing,” Cella said. “In addition, Oaklawn would not be stronger than ever if not for the most supportive and knowledgeable fans in racing.” Early registration for the 2024 Global Symposium on Racing is now open, with a special $100 discount available for those who register by Nov. 22.
