Trentham’s feature jumps meeting has been a happy hunting ground for Ken Duncan, and he will return with Izymydaad (NZ) (Istidaad) on Saturday to chase top honours in the Grant Plumbing Wellington Steeplechase (5500m). The Hunterville horseman won back-to-back Wellington Hurdles (3400m) with former star Wee Biskit (NZ) (Zed) in 2015 and 2016, with his top result in the steeplechase feature coming last season when Izymydaad finished just over a length adrift of champion jumper West Coast (NZ) (Mettre En Jeu). West Coast will not start in this year’s edition but another big challenge awaits in The Cossack (NZ) (Mastercraftsman), who will carry 73kg, while the son of Istidaad is five and a half kilograms better off in the weights under regular rider Stephan Karnicnik. “We hope he can pull out a repeat performance of last year, West Coast isn’t turning up this time but obviously The Cossack was very unlucky being hampered in that race and he’ll be right there again this time,” Duncan said. “We’ll be going head-to-head with him, as well as everyone else in the race. “Izymydaad enjoys the course, it’s a free-wheeling sort of track with nice corners for a little horse, so it plays into our hands a little bit in that respect.” Duncan will also be represented by a half-sister to Wee Biskit in Fabulous Nancy (NZ) (Fabulous), who showed improvement over the bigger fences when finishing second to Kentucky Boy (NZ) (Jakkalberry) at Hastings, while another relation to the mare in He Zed Go (NZ) (Zed) has his second appearance over fences on Saturday. Fabulous Nancy will line up in the Norm Bevan Memorial Maiden Steeplechase (4000m) with Joshua Parker engaged to ride, while Corey Wiles partners He Zed Go in the Cody Singer Memorial Maiden Hurdle (2500m). “It was a good honest run from her (Fabulous Nancy) last start, she’s just a work in progress and plays a bit of polo in the off-season,” Duncan said. “The heavier the track, the better she’ll go so it may not be quite up her alley this time but that’s okay, she can have another go around and she’s a nice jumper so those fences suit. “He Zed Go is another work in progress, he’s growing flat-out at the moment so he’s still a bit weak but we’ll give some experience this year and he might be half-handy next year.” Savabeel seven-year-old Peerless Warrior will revert back to the flat to provide Duncan’s trackwork rider Nicole Jenkins a ride in the Fusion Electrical 2100 for amateur jockeys. “He didn’t look like he was going to get a rider in the maiden chase, so we slipped him in the amateur to give Nicole a ride. She knows him very well and he’s been working up a treat,” Duncan said. “She’s been sitting on the sideline for a couple, she loves doing these races but I haven’t got many to put in them for her.” View the full article

Pippy (NZ) (Tivaci) has been a sprinting revelation this preparation and has convinced connections to aim higher on her home course at Ruakaka. Trainer Chris Gibbs had entered the daughter of Tivaci for two events on Saturday, but her outstanding run of form has earned her a tilt at the ITM/GIB Sprinters’ Winter Championship Final (1400m). “I had a good talk to the owners about it and we said if she was going along well enough, we’d give it a crack,” he said. “I threw in a nom for the other one (Rating 75, 1200m) just to take a look.” Pippy is unbeaten this preparation following consecutive victories on her home patch, including a strong performance two runs back over this weekend’s distance. “She’s going really well so I’m obviously very happy with her,” Gibbs said. “She has surprised me a little bit, I wasn’t picking her to win three in a row.” The four-year-old has breezed through all three outings in fine order and, for an on-pace runner, will have the added benefit of the inside barrier. “She has come through each race better than the last, which is neat, and it’s a pretty strong field and she deserves her chance,” Gibbs said. The stable will also be represented by the talented duo of Chevron (NZ) (El Roca) and Malfy Rosa (NZ) (Burgundy) in the ITM/GIB Whangarei Gold Cup Stayers’ Final (2100m). El Roca gelding Chevron, who finished runner-up in the event 12 months ago, was a resuming third in an open sprint and was then unplaced when over a middle distance a fortnight ago. “He got injured out in the paddock and was off way longer than we would have liked and behind the eight ball a bit, hence the jump up to 2100m,” Gibbs said. “I could have run him over a mile on a heavy track at Tauranga so it was much of a muchness, that would have been a hard enough run. “This was always the race we have been looking toward and Michael (McNab) rode him fresh up and was always keen to get back on him, so we’ve engaged him. I’d like to think they’ll be pretty competitive.” Malfy Rosa rounded off well for third two runs back and while unplaced most recently, it was a better effort than Gibbs originally thought. “Last time, it was a bit of a slow pace and then they quickened and I thought she was a bit casual,” he said. “Then I looked at her sectionals and, to be fair, she came home the same as the winner (Mineshaft (NZ) (Merchant Navy)) so I wasn’t as disappointed.” Malfy Rosa will also have the addition of blinkers on Saturday and she has reacted well to the change. “Her work has certainly so that she’s got a bit more interested and I’m really happy with her,” Gibbs said. “I’ve only got the three runners and I think they are all nice chances.” View the full article

Despite the absence of an unbeaten three-year-old who has lit up the last two Ruakaka racedays, the local father-daughter duo of Kenny Rae and Krystal Williams are set to play a big role again during Saturday’s ITM/Gib Winter Championship Finals Day. Dan Vegas (NZ) (Per Incanto) scored spectacular front-running victories over 1400m on June 8 and June 29. The well-related son of Per Incanto would likely have been a short-priced favourite to complete a winning hat-trick in Saturday’s $60,000 ITM/Gib 3YO Winter Championship Final (1600m), but Rae decided to err on the side of caution. “He’s gone out for a little break,” he said. “I just thought the mile might be a bit far for him at this stage. He’s also done a lot in his first preparation. “There’s been plenty of interest in him from bloodstock agents all over the place – the last one that called me was in Hong Kong. But nothing’s happened yet. I’m just passing those calls on to the owners, and we’ll see what happens.” Rae and Williams will still be represented in the 3YO Final by Tide And Time (NZ) (Time Test) and Zlatna (NZ) (Proisir). Tide And Time finished fourth in the 2YO Final on this day last year, and the Time Test filly went on to clear maiden ranks with an impressive late burst at this track in January. She has chased home Dan Vegas in her last two starts, flashing home from the back to finish fourth and sixth. “I think the step up to 1600m will be ideal for her,” Rae said. “She’s been finishing her races off very nicely behind Dan Vegas in her last couple of runs. “But it might be a different race without him in it – he really strung the fields out, and she dropped right back before getting home strongly. Hopefully there’ll be enough speed on to set it up for her to produce that finish again.” Zlatna was a last-start maiden winner over 1200m at Te Aroha on June 27. “She won that maiden race well, but that was on a Heavy9 track at Te Aroha and it’s going to be a bit different to that on Saturday,” Rae said. Kelly Myers will ride Tide And Time, who the TAB rates an equal $5 favourite alongside Full Noise (NZ) (Turn Me Loose). Zlatna will be ridden by Jasmine Fawcett and is rated a $12 chance. The ITM/Gib Progressive Winter Championship Final (1600m) features Heart of Alladin (NZ) (Satono Aladdin), who was a strong winner over the same course and distance on June 8. He lined up again three weeks later but was slow to begin from a wide gate and finished outside the placings. “He was miles too wide last time, so he never really had a chance there,” Rae said. “I think it’s quite a nice race for him, hopefully Kelly can give him a good run from that draw (four).” Two-year-old Vegas Queen (NZ) (Proisir) is a close relative to Dan Vegas, and she caught the eye with a big finish for third over 1100m during the last Ruakaka meeting on June 29. That was the second career start for the Proisir filly, who had been a well-beaten sixth on debut three weeks earlier. Vegas Queen will contest Saturday’s $35,000 ITM/Gib 2YO (1200m), which has been added to the card after the $60,000 2YO Final was deleted due to insufficient entries. “She’s just a lovely filly,” Rae said. “She’s not really a two-year-old type, but the improvement that she showed from her first run to her second was huge. She’s going the right way. She’s as bright as a button and eating well. “Further down the track, the 1000 Guineas (Gr.1, 1600m) is the dream. A race like this on her home track is probably a more realistic target to focus on for now, and hopefully she can show us enough to keep heading in that direction.” Stablemate Casual Khan (NZ) (Mongolian Khan) is entered to make his debut in the same race on Saturday and is expected to benefit from the run. The Rae/Williams team at Ruakaka is rounded out by last-start placegetters Illicit Dreams (NZ) (Vancouver) and Dancing Dream (NZ) (Contributer), who will contest the Northland Business Systems (1200m) and Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series (1200m) respectively. “They’re both going really well and should be competitive again,” Rae said. “I don’t think there’ll be any excuses.” View the full article

As part of an effort to encourage the importation of quality young horses into Malaysia and to boost the horse population, NZB is proud to partner with the Selangor Turf Club for the running of Saturday’s RM100,000 NZB 3YO Trophy (1400m) eligible for graduates of NZB sales only. It is the second lucrative three-year-old feature to be added to the Selangor calendar this year, following on from the 3YO Pacific Cup (1200m), which was run for the same stake on June 23. The Pacific Cup was stylishly won by the undefeated NZB Ready to Run Sale graduate Antipodean (NZ) (Derryn), who also headlines the line-up for Saturday’s big race. Antipodean was bred by Grangewilliam Stud, who passed him in during Book 2 of Karaka 2022 with a reserve of NZ$40,000. He was subsequently offered by Regal Farm at the 2022 Ready to Run Sale, where trainer Simon Dunderdale secured him for NZ$23,000. Antipodean has been a highly impressive winner of all of his six starts to date, earning RM113,400 (NZ$39,686) with the prospect of much more to come for owner Yee Kin Kong. He will be ridden by Brazilian jockey Carlos Henrique in Saturday’s New Zealand Bloodstock 3-Year-Old Trophy, where all eyes will be on him as he jumps from gate eight in a field of 10. But Antipodean is not the only NZB-sourced runner among the talented line-up. His Dunderdale-trained stablemate Military Flag (NZ) (U S Navy Flag) was a NZ$52,500 purchase from the 2022 Ready to Run Sale. His eight-start career has produced four wins, three placings and RM75,500 (NZ$26,422). Rhythm Of Zen (NZ) (Time Test) cost NZ$26,000 at that same Ready to Run Sale. He has had 11 starts for two wins, three placings and RM33,904 (NZ$11,865). Flying Warrior (NZ) (Complacent) was offered during the 2022 National Online Yearling Sale, where he sold for just NZ$500. His seven-start career has produced two wins and RM13,200 (NZ$4,619). Graphjet Express (NZ) (Belardo) was a NZ$75,000 purchase from the 2022 Ready to Run Sale. He has had just four starts to date for a win and two placings, banking RM15,880 (NZ$5,557). Charming Win (NZ) (Charm Spirit) was bought for NZ$62,500 at the Ready to Run Sale. He has yet to win in 10 starts, but has placed in eight of them and has earned RM12,776 (NZ$4,471). Swordsman Scholar (NZ) (Wrote) was a NZ$55,000 purchase from the Ready to Run Sale. Little has been seen of him in Malaysia so far, finishing seventh in his only start. Rounding out the field is the filly Sunny Day (NZ) (U S Navy Flag), who cost NZ$4,000 in Book 2 of Karaka 2022. She has placed in three of her seven starts, earning RM7,692 (NZ$2,691). The NZB 3-Year-Old Trophy will be run as Race 6 at Selangor on Saturday, with a scheduled start time of 4.15pm local time (8.15pm NZT). View the full article

What Sir John Monash Stakes Day 2024 Where Caulfield Racecourse – Gate 2, Station St, Caulfield East VIC 3145 When Saturday, July 13, 2024 First Race 12:05pm AEST Visit Dabble Black-type racing returns to Caulfield on Saturday as the Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) headlines a competitive nine-race card. It has been a wet week in Melbourne, and an upgrade from the Soft 7 track rating looks unlikely. The rail sticks to its true position, with the action commencing at 12:05pm AEST. Sir John Monash Stakes Tip: Ashford Street Ashford Street was touch unlucky at Flemington on June 22, but his Caulfield record is strong. A two-time winner already at the course, including three starts back in BM90 company, the son of Moshe is sure to appreciate the sting out of the deck. With seven wins and six minor placings from 21 starts on rain-affected ground, the conditions are set to suit him perfectly. Sir John Monash Stakes Race 8 – #1 Ashford Street (3) 6yo Gelding | T: Tom Dabernig | J: Damian Lane (58.5kg) +450 with Dabble Best Bet at Caulfield: He’s Beset He’s Beset has a win and two runner-up finishes from three starts this campaign, including a first-up win at the Caulfield 1400m on May 11. Barrier 19 is offset by his desire to settle up on speed, and with Blake Shinn in the saddle once again, this guy is expected to be prominent throughout. With a touch of luck, He’s Beset should prove too good for his BM78 rivals. Best Bet Race 2 – #11 He’s Beset (19) 4yo Gelding | T: Nick Ryan | J: Blake Shinn (58kg) +220 with Bet365 Next Best at Caulfield: Little Jack Little Jack is a nice stayer going through the grades. The four-year-old gelding has won three of his four starts this time in, including a dominant 2.8-length victory at the Caulfield 2000m — the course and distance he competes at on the weekend. He goes up 2.5kg on that effort, but with a clear appreciation for wet tracks and with Jason Maskiell sticking on board, Little Jack looks hard to go past. Next Best Race 5 – #10 Little Jack (7) 4yo Gelding | T: Alex Rae | J: Jason Maskiell (58.5kg) +350 with Neds Best Value at Caulfield: Lovazou Horse betting sites have the opener down to a race in two, but Lovazou looms as a genuine threat to Miss Roumbini and Enna’s Dream. She comes into this off an impressive Class 1 victory at Ballarat on June 12, which was her first start since finishing midfield in Group 3 company during the spring. Carleen Hefel sticks on board, and in the small field, Lovazou will be close enough to strike as she unleashes down the heart of the track. What Darwin Races Where Fannie Bay Racecourse – Dick Ward Dr, Fannie Bay NT 0820 When Saturday, July 13, 2024 First Race 2:07pm ACST Visit Dabble Darwin Cup Carnival action continues with 81 horses accepting for the seven-event meeting on Saturday afternoon. The feature race on Day 2 is the $60,000 Chief Minister’s Cup (1600m) at weight-for-age level where a majority of the runners will be having their final hit-out before the $200,000 Darwin Cup (2050m) on August 5. Sunny conditions and light winds are the forecast for Saturday. The Fannie Bay rail will be in the true position and it will once again be a good dirt surface. BEST BET: Pop Magic With six wins and five seconds from 16 starts, Pop Magic is clearly a Fannie Bay specialist, and in his past seven starts, he has managed three wins and four seconds. Winner of the $40,000 Wet Season Series Final (1200m) at 0-70 level in early February by 6.8 lengths, Pop Magic backed up for another win over 1200m (0-70) in March before a last start second behind Palmerston Sprint aspirant Canton Kid over 1000m (0-76) on June 29. Settling a distant third behind Canton Kid and Rising Sphere, the son of Wandjina motored home to finish 1.3 lengths adrift of the winner. Best Bet Race 2 – #4 Pop Magic (3) 5yo Gelding | T: Ella Clarke | J: Stan Tsaikos (58.5kg) Bet with Bet365 NEXT BEST: Raffalli Raffalli lost his edge in November, but since returning from a spell he has done little wrong. The five-year-old gelding was a first up third over 1000m (0-64) behind Mr Have A Chat in April before finishing third once again over 1100m (0-64) behind Patriotic King in May. Jumping from the inside gate, the son of Choisir basically led all the way before sneaking home over 1300m (0-64) in May. After drawing gate eight, he battled for the early lead and just failed to hold on when second behind the fast-finishing Influential Jack over 1300m (0-70) on June 15. A good draw and a 1.5kg claim is a bonus. Next Best Race 1 – #1 Raffalli (1) 5yo Gelding | T: Tayarn Halter | J: Jade Hampson (a1.5) (61kg) Bet with PlayUp BEST VALUE: Iknowhatyouredoing Iknowhatyouredoing made his NT debut in Darwin last year and in five starts he managed a second and three thirds from 1100-1600m. The son of Husson had only four starts in the Red Centre from October-April for a second over 1600m (BM54) and a third over 1200m (0-70) before a third behind He’s Maverick, who won last Saturday’s Darwin Guineas, and Lamprecht’s Daniher, who also saluted last weekend. Iknowhatyouredoing has blown the start over 1300m and 1600m since returning to Darwin before rattling home to suggest that if he jumps well he’s a chance. What Beaufine Stakes Day Where Belmont Racecourse – Saintly Entrance, Burswood WA 6100 When Saturday, July 13, 2024 First Race 11:34am AWST Visit Dabble The Listed Beaufine Stakes will headline the nine-race card at Belmont Park this Saturday, with the racing scheduled to kick off at 11:34am AWST. Although the track is rated as a Heavy 8 on Thursday, there is no rain forecast for the remainder of the week, and that should allow the surface to improve into the Soft range. The rail will be moved out to the +10m position for the entire circuit. Beaufine Stakes Tip: Ghost Who Walks Ghost Who Walks will return from a three-month spell and attempt to defend his Beaufine Stakes crown after defeating Real Danger last year. The Neville Parnham-trained gelding was given a barrier trial over 1000m in readiness for this first-up assignment and he should be ready to go. Kershaw Dhurun has ridden this son of God Has Spoken 17 times, and if he can find a position behind the speed, Ghost Who Walks can go back-to-back in this race. Beaufine Stakes Race 8 – #2 Ghost Who Walks (2) 5yo Gelding | T: Neville Parnham | J: Kershaw Dhurun (58kg) +600 with Dabble Best Bet at Belmont: Yonga Lass William Pike will combine with the Williams stable when he is legged aboard Yonga Lass, who will be seeking to maintain her unbeaten third-up record (2:2-0-0) intact. The four-year-old mare ran home from the back of the field to finish second behind Triple Jay over 1200m in her most recent start. Now that she rises to 1400m and at peak fitness, it is expected that Yonga Lass will appreciate the extra ground and prove hard to beat. Best Bet Race 4 – #2 Yonga Lass (2) 4yo Mare | T: Grant & Alana Williams | J: William Pike (58kg) +190 with Neds Next Best at Belmont: Berbere Team Williams and William Pike will combine again with Berbere, who will step up to 1400m second-up after finishing fourth over 1000m fresh. The Gingerbread Man gelding settled last first-up, and he let down with a strong turn of foot but couldn’t get into the finish, indicating that he is looking for a longer trip. From barrier four, Pike can settle close to a slow speed, and if he can finish off like he did last start, Berbere will go very close. Next Best Race 5 – #3 Berbere (4) 4yo Gelding | T: Grant & Alana Williams | J: William Pike (58.5kg) +280 with PlayUp Best Value at Belmont: Arnie’s Boy After dropping back from 1600m to 1300m at this track last start, Arnie’s Boy flashed home from midfield to finish second behind My Hidden Universe. Ashley Maley has chosen to step this eight-year-old gelding back up to the mile, and he appears to have found the right race for him to record another win. Chris Parnham will settle close to the speed from barrier five, and if Arnie’s Boy gets a clear run in the home straight, he can spring a surprise at good each-way odds with horse betting sites. What Randwick Races Where Royal Randwick Racecourse – Alison Rd, Randwick NSW 2031 When Saturday, July 13, 2024 First Race 11:10am AEST Visit Dabble Royal Randwick is the destination for metro racing on Saturday, with a bumper 10-race program set for decision. The rail is out +9m from the 1600m to the winning post, while the remainder is out +6m the rest of the way around. The track is rated a Heavy 8 at the time of acceptances, but with mostly sunny skies forecast in the lead-up, punters can expect an upgrade to the Soft range prior to the opening event at 11:10am local time. Best Bet at Randwick: Don Diego De Vega As highlighted in the Follow Files, Don Diego De Vega was sensational on Australian debut and only found one better in the form of Bear On The Loose at Rosehill on June 29. The French import loomed large in the final 300m but seemingly peaked on the run as he closed within a length of the eventual winner as the quinella pair cleared out on their respective rivals. This guy appears to be much better than BM78 grade, and with Jason Collett likely to lob into the one-one throughout this 1800m contest, Don Diego De Vega should have no problem dispatching this lot second-up. Best Bet Race 5 – #2 Don Diego De Vega (4) 4yo Gelding | T: Annabel Neasham | J: Jason Collett (61kg) +170 with PlayUp Next Best at Randwick: Bear On The Loose Bear On The Loose was well-supported with online bookmakers at Rosehill on June 29 and obliged for punters as he made every post a winner. The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained gelding was made to work for the victory, however, being pressured throughout the 1800m journey. He oozes class compared to some of his key rivals as he steps into BM88 company, and provided Nash Rawiller can slide across and lead from the wide draw (14), Bear On The Loose should make it back-to-back wins. Next Best Race 9 – #9 Bear On The Loose (14) 4yo Gelding | T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | J: Nash Rawiller (57.5kg) +110 with Neds Best Value at Randwick: Substantial Substantial hammered the line resuming in the Listed Civic Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on June 26 and gets a far more favourable setup second-up. The son of Siyouni was near last turning for home, storming down the middle of the course to get within 3.6 lengths of Diamond Diesel. He draws to sit much closer from barrier two this time, and with a swing in the weights on some key rivals coming through the same form line, Substantial should give followers a bold sight at the each-way price with online betting sites. What Doomben Races Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007 When Saturday, July 13, 2024 First Race 11:53am AEST Visit Dabble Queensland horse racing will head to Doomben this Saturday afternoon, where the Brisbane Racing Club will host a very competitive nine-race program. The track was rated as a Soft 7 at the time of acceptances; however, with no rain on the forecast for the rest of the week, it is expected that the surface will improve before the start of the meeting. The rail will be in the +0.5m position for the entire circuit, with the first race scheduled to jump at 11:53am AEST. Best Bet at Doomben: I See You Coming I See You Coming returned for his second racing preparation under the care of Tony Gollan, and the five-year-old gelding was very unlucky when finishing second behind Atmosphere at Ipswich over 1100m. This son of Tycoon Ruler settled behind the speed first-up and was held up until the 200m mark before running home strongly to just miss in a photo finish. With even luck, this guy should have won that race, and if he gets a similar run off the rail here, I See You Coming can go one better. Best Bet Race 4 – #1 I See You Coming (2) 5yo Gelding | T: Tony Gollan | J: Angela Jones (60.5kg) +150 with PlayUp Next Best at Doomben: Mr Galazi Mr Galazi went within a whisker of keeping his undefeated second-up record (4:3-1-0) intact at the Sunshine Coast last start, but the David Murphy-trained galloper was overrun by Hakkai Maru in the final strides. After leading every step of the way over 1000m on a Heavy track, the son of Sir Prancealot was only beaten by a runner who revelled in the heavy conditions and they beat the rest of the field comfortably. From barrier two, Georgina Cartwright can find the front again and prove very hard to run down. Next Best Race 2 – #7 Mr Galazi (2) 4yo Gelding | T: David Murpy | J: Georgina Cartwright (57.5kg) +320 with Neds Best Value at Doomben: Tidal Creek Stuart Kendrick and Jake Bayliss will combine with Tidal Creek for the second straight start after the five-year-old gelding returned from a 10-week freshen with a solid sixth-place finish over 1350m at Ipswich. The Sntizel gelding would have taken good fitness benefits out of his fresh run and will return to the Doomben 1600m (5:3-1-0), a track and distance that he enjoys racing at. With only one other speed influence engaged in this contest, Bayliss can push forward, settle outside the leader and give a good sight at big odds with online bookmakers. Best Value Race 8 – #5 Tidal Creek (6) 5yo Gelding | T: Stuart Kendrick | J: Jake Bayliss (60kg) +1700 with Picklebet Saturday quaddie tips for Doomben races Doomben quadrella selections Saturday, July 13, 2024 1-2-3-8 1-5-10-13-16 5-9-13-15 3-4-11-14 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article

What Rockhampton Newmarket Day 2024 Where Callaghan Park Racecourse – Reaney St, North Rockhampton QLD 4701 When Friday, July 12, 2024 First Race 11:29am AEST Visit Dabble Racing will head to Callaghan Park on Friday for the first part of the two-day Rockhampton Jockey Club Winter Racing Carnival. The $100,000 Rockhampton Newmarket will headline the nine-race card on the opening day, with racing set to kick off at 11:29am AEST. With no rain on the forecast for Thursday and Friday, the track should improve into the Good range, while the rail will be in the +2.5m position for the entire circuit. Rockhampton Newmarket tip: Rockribbed Rockribbed returned with a dominant win at Ipswich over 1200m on June 22, when the Tony Gollan-trained galloper settled behind the speed before taking over at the 200m mark to run away from his rivals late. The Night Of Thunder gelding has only had five starts in Queensland for Gollan, and he should only improve second-up. Angela Jones will push forward from barrier 15, and if she can settle in the first six, Rockribbed can record back-to-back wins. Rockhampton Newmarket Race 8 – #7 Rockribbed (15) 6yo Gelding | T: Tony Gollan | J: Angela Jones (54.5kg) Bet with Dabble Best Bet at Rockhampton: Simbu Simbu was last seen finishing an underwhelming seventh place at Doomben before going out for a lengthy spell. However, the son of Spirit Of Boom has been to the trials before this fresh start and led from start to finish to record an ultra-impressive 4.3-length victory. If Angela Jones can get him to bounce like he did in his trial and find the lead, Simbu will prove very hard to run down. Best Bet Race 6 – #3 Simbu (1) 4yo Gelding | T: Tony Gollan | J: Angela Jones (60kg) Bet with Picklebet Next Best at Rockhampton: I Am Lethal On debut for the George Carpenter stable, I Am Lethal finished in an unlucky fourth place over 1400m at the Sunshine Coast. The I Am Invincible progeny picked his way through the field from the back and made up plenty of ground in the final 400m. From barrier four, Jake Bayliss shouldn’t have many problems finding clear air this time, and with even luck, I Am Lethal will go very close. Next Best Race 2 – #5 I Am Lethal (4) 5yo Gelding | T: George Carpenter | J: Jake Bayliss (57kg) Bet with Neds Friday quaddie tips for Rockhampton Newmarket Day Rockhampton quadrella selections Friday, July 12, 2024 3-5-7 2-4-6 2-7-9 3-4-5-10-15 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip More horse racing tips View the full article

Celestial Legend winning the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes. Photo: RacingNSW Kerrin McEvoy will miss the next two city meetings for a short family break, but he is eagerly anticipating the new season and reuniting with Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) winner Celestial Legend. McEvoy was sidelined during the autumn after fracturing a vertebra in a fall on Golden Slipper Day, causing him to miss Celestial Legend’s Group 1 victory. However, McEvoy will be back aboard the Les Bridge-trained colt this spring, and he is excited about the prospect. “It will be nice to see how he can progress into being a four-year-old,” McEvoy said. “It sounds as though he is going to be heading towards the Golden Eagle and maybe the King Charles [III Stakes at Randwick] before that. He’s exciting and he looks great. I had a couple of canters on him early in his prep and he feels great too.” Horse racing news View the full article

Sir John Monash Stakes contender Ashford Street. (Photo by George Sal/Racing Photos) Tom Dabernig is optimistic that a return to Caulfield and a rain-affected track will boost the chances of Ashford Street. Since joining Dabernig’s stable, the sprinter has had three starts: two at Caulfield, resulting in a win and a second-place finish, and one unplaced finish at Flemington. Dabernig has had Saturday’s Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) in mind since Ashford Street joined his yard, and he believes the gelding is in good shape for the race. “It’s looking a pretty good option on paper,” Dabernig said. “It’s a race we circled before the beginning of this prep. We looked at it as a possible target and everything to date has gone well. “His two Caulfield runs were excellent, and then at Flemington, he was unlucky. “He’s probably more a Caulfield horse than a Flemington horse anyway.” The rain that fell early in the week and the Caulfield track being posted in the soft range at acceptance time on Wednesday were welcome news for Dabernig. “If this bit of rain that is about continues, it will suit him,” the trainer said. “He likes those softer conditions, and his three runs for us have all been on good tracks. “The purpose of having him in through winter was to try and take advantage of some softer tracks, so hopefully, they’re conditions that will suit him. “A little bit of sting out would be ideal, as will the small field.” Ashford Street is priced as a +450 winning hope with horse racing bookmakers for the Sir John Monash Stakes. Eternal Flame. (Photo by Brett Holburt/Racing Photos) Mick Kent is letting his promising mare, Eternal Flame, chart her own course, but he’s confident enough in her potential to nominate her for the Cox Plate. Kent’s primary goal for Eternal Flame this spring is the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington. He aims to get her to 1600 metres and then reassess, with the Moonee Valley feature still a possibility. “She will start off in mares’ races with the idea that she will head to the Empire Rose Stakes. I’ll nominate her for the Cox Plate in case she improves a few lengths,” Kent told Racing.com. In March, Eternal Flame secured consecutive victories in the Group 3 Matron Stakes at Flemington and the Group 2 Sunline Stakes at Moonee Valley, both over 1600m. She then headed to Sydney and finished eighth in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Randwick. It was a commendable effort, given she missed the start by two lengths and was held up in the closing stages, eventually finishing only 2.66 lengths behind Zougotcha. The rising five-year-old mare has only had 13 starts and, according to Kent, has significant potential. She is set to return to racing in a mares Stakes race at the end of August or early September. Kent, who manages a boutique stable of 20 horses, considers Eternal Flame his best spring prospect. His team also includes promising stayers Steel Run and Samuel Langhorne. Pierre Ng holds a slim lead over Francis Lui. The 2023/24 Hong Kong trainers’ championship will be decided at Sunday’s Season Finale after Pierre Ng and Francis Lui failed to land winners at the final Happy Valley meeting of the campaign on Wednesday night. Ng leads by one win – 67 to 66 – after his eight runners tonight yielded one third and two fourths, while Lui logged two seconds, two thirds and a fourth from nine runners. With 11 races at Sunday’s twilight fixture, both trainers have strong entries ahead of Thursday’s declarations for Sha Tin. Lui was denied crucial victories with the runner-up performances of Matsu Victor and Yellowfin, while Ng’s best performer was Winning Steps. As Ng’s tussle with Lui continued, Danny Shum topped the Happy Valley trainer standings with 33 wins at the city circuit this season – two more than Caspar Fownes (31). “It’s not easy to do,” said Shum, who bolstered his Happy Valley haul with Brave Witness’ success. “To have 52 wins overall is not bad. I’m happy with that.” It is the second time Shum has trained the most winners in a season at Happy Valley, while Zac Purton was acclaimed as the most successful jockey at the city circuit for the eighth time with 47 wins, 12 clear of Karis Teetan, who snared a double tonight. The evening’s feature was won by Woodfire Bro, who made a successful Happy Valley debut for Michael Chang under a calculating ride from Keith Yeung, who patiently talked the speed behind leaders Tomodachi Kokoroe and Yellowfin before accelerating along the fence to win impressively. “He’s a lovely horse to ride. We had the perfect barrier (gate one) and the pace was just nice. Everything went smoothly and this horse really deserved to win,” Yeung said. “This horse has been beaten by some nice horses this season. I think he can still progress because he’s young.” By Echoes Of Heaven, Woodfire Bro had won four races – all at Sha Tin – before his Happy Valley success. The gelding clocked 1:37.90 to set a new 1650m course record at the city circuit, which was previously held by Tsar (1:37.97). Chief Stipelas Whyte reached the 40-wine milestone with a double, striking with Goodmanship under Teetan before Matthew Chadwick sealed a brace of his own aboard Lucky Planet. A 13-time Hong Kong champion jockey, Whyte was delighted to post his 40th win of the season. “I’ve tried to do that (reach 40 wins) year-in, year-out. I’ve had a bit of hard luck with seconds and a few bad draws. You can’t look back – you can’t turn those around – so I’m just glad it’s fallen into place now,” he said. “He (Lucky Planet) has taken a long time for the penny drop. He’s been a victim of circumstances and he’s been very immature – both mentally and physically – and he’s been subject to false paces and bad draws, so he’s had a bit of bad luck. “Anyway, he got his act together today. I think racing experience and gate one certainly helped him tonight.” Chadwick said: “He (Lucky Planet) ran well last time at Sha Tin and we just thought the shorter straight would benefit him and he was able to kick clear and keep the break,” . Chadwick also scored on Tony Cruz’s Ninja Derby. “He (Ninja Derby) had a lovely run, it was his distance, had a lovely gate and he did what he expected to do when he got clear,” Chadwick said. Teetan sealed an early brace with Brave Witness’ victory before Antoine Hamelin scored aboard Ricky Yiu’s Giant Leap. Wearing blinkers for the first time, David Hall-trained Prince Of Porty landed the Class 4 Star Shine Handicap (1200m) for Hugh Bowman. Jumping to a prominent position from barrier one, the Wandjina gelding had to stave off a late challenge from Strive For Glory before posting his third win from 14 starts. Cody Mo-trained Atomic Force triumphed before Frankie Lor’s Flamingo Trillion closed out the Happy Valley season under Derek Leung, denying Romantic Laos by a nose in a gripping finish. Trainer Dan Morgan and Paul Denton, with Don’t Be Dramatic following a win at Pioneer Park. He was foreman for Alice Springs trainer Greg Connor during the Darwin Cup Carnival two years ago, but Red Centre trainer Dan Morgan will field runners for the first time at Fannie Bay on Saturday. Morgan’s five-year-old gelding Castlereagh Kid lines up in the $60,000 Chief Minister’s Cup (1600m) – the feature on Day 2 of the 2024 Carnival – and Don’t Be Dramatic, a gelding, confronts fellow three-year-olds over 1100m (BM66). “I took Flying Start and Bold Tropic up for Greg a couple of years ago, it will be my first trip flying solo and I’m excited to head up there,” Morgan said on Wednesday from Larrimah – 500km south of Darwin – when he stopped for a pie en route to the Top End. “I left Alice in my ute at 4am and hope to arrive in Darwin this evening – the horses also left this morning on the transport truck.” Morgan, with a respectable 16 wins this season in the Alice Springs and Provincial premiership, was sceptical about making the 1500km trip north. “I wasn’t going to go to Darwin, but Greg talked me into it, we’ll go and have a crack against the big boys,” he said. “Initially, I wanted to take five or six horses, but it didn’t quite work out. “Thankfully, the stars aligned with Castlereagh Kid and Don’t Be Dramatic – they’re going well and there’s races for them.” With a trainer-jockey license, Morgan used to ride regularly for the Connor stable – he boasts 50 wins in the saddle at Pioneer Park. The 30-year-old doesn’t ride as often these days, but hopes to achieve success at Fannie Bay as a trainer after five wins as a jockey. Castlereagh Kid had three wins from 10 starts for the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable, including the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield in 2022. Late last year, he was fourth in a $130,000 Ballarat feature over 2000m (BM84) and fifth in the Werribee Cup (2000m). In June, the son of Snitzel wasn’t sighted in his first two Red Centre starts over 1200m and 1400m before a close fourth over 1400m (BM64). The $200,000 Darwin Cup (2050m) on August 5 is his target, and with a rating of 82, he’s a likely starter – he’ll certainly have his hands full though in the Chief Minister’s Cup. Don’t Be Dramatic, scratched from a 1000m Alice Springs maiden in his first career start in January after bolting following a clap of thunder, has three wins and two seconds from six starts from 1000-1400m. “Castlereagh Kid’s a quality horse if you have a look through his record, he wants ground,” Morgan said. “On speed, a tough horse like him over distance, I think the Darwin Cup is the perfect race – you’ve got to have a throw at the stumps. “Don’t Be Dramatic, his first prep was sensational and he’s come back really well from a spell.” Morgan said he would wait and see how the speedy Don’t Be Dramatic pulls up on Saturday before considering the $40,000 three-year-old feature over 1200m on July 27. The July 5 opinion out of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit that declared that part of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) is unconstitutional is generating legal filings from both sides in a related case awaiting a decision in the Eighth Circuit. Both the plaintiffs/appellants in the Eighth Circuit case (led by Bill Walmsley, the president of the Arkansas HBPA, and Jon Moss, the executive director of the Iowa HBPA) and the defendants/appellees (executives with the HISA Authority and the Federal Trade Commission [FTC]), filed documents this week alerting the Eighth Circuit to the Fifth Circuit's decision, with each side attempting to get the court to see its side of the argument now that the Fifth Circuit's constitutionality opinion on HISA is in conflict with a 2023 opinion out of the Sixth Circuit. The year-old case in the Eighth Circuit involves those two HBPA chapters seeking to reverse a lower court's denial of a preliminary injunction that sought to halt HISA and its Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) program. Attorneys representing the FTC defendants pointed out in a July 9 letter that the Fifth Circuit's opinion concurred with the Sixth Circuit's with regard to a Congressional amendment solving nondelegation problems with the Authority's rulemaking power, HISA not violating the Due Process Clause, and the Authority not qualifying as a government entity subject to the Appointments Clause. The FTC's legal team did note that the Fifth Circuit's opinion departed from the Sixth Circuit's on the subject of “enforcement provisions,” but the FTC lawyers underscored that the Sixth Circuit's analysis is the “correct” version that the Eighth Circuit judges should consider when ruling on the related case. “The construction adopted by the Fifth Circuit serves to create, rather than avoid, constitutional concerns,” the FTC's letter stated. “This Court should conclude, as did the Sixth Circuit, that plaintiffs have failed to establish a likelihood of success on their facial claim to the extent they challenge the Act's enforcement provisions. In all events, plaintiffs are not entitled to a preliminary injunction with respect to the enforcement provisions because they have not provided any reason to suggest an enforcement action against them is forthcoming.” One day later, on July 10, an attorney for the HBPA appellants countered with a response letter to the Eighth Circuit that stated just the opposite, that the Fifth Circuit, and not the Sixth, got the HISA constitutionality question right. “The Fifth Circuit correctly held, as Appellants have argued, the HISA Act, as amended, facially violates the private nondelegation doctrine because the statute allows a private entity–the Authority–to wield the executive power of the United States,” the HBPA attorney's letter stated. The HBPA's letter continued: “Appellants remain subject to a facially unconstitutional regime and thereby suffer ongoing irreparable harm. The alternative Hobson's choice is to 'bet the farm' and risk being subject to unconstitutional enforcement actions that come with potentially severe sanctions–including a permanent industry ban. It is neither equitable nor in the public interest to allow Appellees to continue enforcing an unconstitutional statute.” The case was argued before the Eighth Circuit June 12.
