  1. The board of directors of the Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) unanimously voted to appoint owner/trainer Mark Glatt to fill a vacancy on the board created by the recent resignation of longtime board member Rick Gold. After studying at Western Washington University, Glatt began training Thoroughbreds in 1995, handling a second string for his father at Yakima Meadows. The following year, he moved to Golden Gate Fields in Northern California; and in 2000 he relocated to Southern California. He has amassed more than 1,200 wins and career earnings of over $47 million. Glatt lives in Monrovia with his wife Dena and children Ryan, Luke, and Madison. “We are very pleased to welcome Mark Glatt,” said Bill Nader, TOC President and CEO. “He brings a wealth of experience as a trainer and owner to the TOC board. Mark is intelligent, thoughtful, hardworking, and passionate about the sport, and he will be a great asset to the organization. He has been an observer at our weekly meetings, as well as our monthly board meetings, over the past few months and has proved to be a quick study,” Nader continued. “He's ready and will be a great addition to our team.” For more information, visit www.toconline.com. 2. White Birch will not line out in Saturday's Coral-Eclipse after connections revealed the Group 1 scorer has recorded an unsatisfactory blood test. In the John Murphy-trained four-year-old's absence, City Of Troy is now as short as 2-5 to build on his Epsom heroics at Sandown. George Murphy, assistant trainer to his father John, told the Racing Post, “White Birch had a blood test this morning and unfortunately it hasn't come back 100 per cent perfect. “As a result, we've decided not to travel to Sandown for the Eclipse this weekend. The horse is in good form at home and we're looking forward to the rest of the season with him.” This is the second time that White Birch has been deemed a late defector as he missed the Prince Of Wales's Stakes due to poor bloods. In his absence, City Of Troy will be given most to think about by Dancing Gemini and Ghostwriter while a maximum field of 10 will now line out for the 1m2f Group 1. Having been scratched from the Listed Vic Sprint Series final at Flemington the week prior, the four-year-old mare relished the extra week between runs to claim her first black-type success at start nine. There was speed aplenty with Malkovich initially leading the field up, before Katsu took on the classy sprinter for the lead and tried to run away approaching the home turn. As a majority of the field opted to head for the middle of the track, Carleen Hefel and Sigh ($7) stuck closer towards the rail and booted to the lead with 250m to go. Mileva ($8.50), who claim the 2022 edition of the race emerged from the pack and loomed as a serious threat to Sigh with 100m to go. However, Hefel managed to get every bit of effort out of Sigh to go on to claim her first Group 3 as a jockey in a tight finish, with General Beau ($7) a length away in third. 2022: Mileva arrives in time Much of the post-race talk focused on $2.80 favourite Oxley Road running out of puff on the straight. But no one can discredit the performance of Mileva in taking out the Sir John Monash Stakes at Caulfield. The four-year-old mare, with Daniel Moor aboard, was brave inside the final 100m in the 1100m sprint worth $200,000. She notched up her third victory for Phillip Stokes in six starts thanks to Daniel Moor who judged his ride to perfection late in the race, going on to edge out Bless Her for Clayton Chief Stipelas. 2021: Red Can Man bounces back in style Red Can Man, a sprinter hailing from Western Australia, bounced back from a lackluster debut in Melbourne to capture Saturday’s 2021 Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield. Having won seven of his 18 starts in Perth, Red Can Man transitioned to trainer David Brideoake’s stable at Mornington for a Victorian campaign. Despite a disappointing initial outing at Flemington on June 19, where he failed to place down the straight, the son of Gingerbread Man showed promise with a strong trial at Traralgon. Returning to firmer footing and around a turn, Red Can Man showcased his best form, thriving on the Good 4 surface at Caulfield despite the cold conditions. The Sir John Monash Stakes evolved into a thrilling speed duel primarily between Red Can Man and Sydney’s three-year-old Malkovich. Ultimately, Red Can Man prevailed in the final 50 metres, clinching victory by a neck in the $160,000 contest. 2020: Jungle Edge swims to Group 3 success Trainer Mick Bell says he is in awe of stable star Jungle Edge after the sprinter revelled in the heavy conditions to win the 2020 Sir John Monash Stakes at Caulfield. In holding off the Godolphin-owned Viridine, Jungle Edge landed a sizeable betting move to run the $2.60 favourite in registering a three-quarter length victory. The Group Three win in the 1100m sprint avenged Jungle Edge’s narrow defeat at the hands of Oak Door in 2019. And the success provided Jade Darose her second stakes race win aboard Jungle Edge after taking out the WJ Adams Stakes at Caulfield in February. Due to COVID-19 restrictions placed on jockeys, Darose was unable to travel to Adelaide when Jungle Edge won the DC McKay Stakes at Morphettville in May. Darose was Jungle Edge’s regular trackwork partner since Bell took over the training of the rising 10-year-old five years prior, but the WJ Adams Stakes victory was her first race ride on the gelding. 4. What Sale Races Where Sale Turf Club – 1227 Maffra-Sale Rd, Sale VIC 3850 When Thursday, July 4, 2024 First Race 12:25pm AEST Visit Dabble Racing heads to the Sale Turf Club in Victoria on Thursday afternoon with a competitive eight-race meeting set to greet punters. Clear skies are forecast for the day, with the track likely to remain a Soft 7. The rail will come out 4m for the entire circuit, with the Sale races on July 4 set to commence at 12:25pm AEST. Best Bet at Sale: Mansiere Despite never winning first-up from a spell, Mansiere’s form during the autumn suggests he can buck that trend. The three-year-old gelding has managed two runner-up efforts from three fresh runs, including last campaign at the Sale 1106m — the same course and distance he tackles here. He took Pantelone to within a nostril at Sandown last campaign and was far from disgraced behind the likes of Estriella and Caballus at Flemington. Best Bet Race 7 – #5 Mansiere (1) 3yo Gelding | T: Nick Ryan | J: Ethan Brown (60kg) +170 with Picklebet Next Best at Sale: Champagne Effort Champagne Effort was beaten by a length at Wangaratta on June 20, which followed a similar defeat at Cranbourne the start prior. She draws perfectly in barrier two under Rose Hammond, who claims 3kg. With just 54.5kg on her back, and an economical run in transit, Champagne Effort should have no issues accounting for her rivals this time around. Next Best Race 2 – #9 Champagne Effort (2) 3yo Filly | T: Gavin Bedggood | J: Rose Hammond (a3) (57.5kg) +320 with Neds Best Value at Sale: Reprisal Danny O’Brien’s Reprisal has been competitive in some hot form races in his three runs this campaign. The three-year-old gelding won over the Mornington 1200m two starts back, then was beaten two lengths by subsequent Caulfield winner Bossy Nic on June 10 when forced to travel wide without cover. Barrier eight is a touch worrying, but if Jason Maskiell can find cover in the second half of the field, Reprisal looks like a great bet at a nice price with horse racing bookmakers. 5. Debbie Sweeney had expected Willit to give a bold account of himself at Rotorua and the three-year-old duly delivered at the first time of asking on Wednesday. The Te Awamutu trainer had been more than happy with the son of Swiss Ace ahead of his debut in the Macmillan Accountants Maiden (1215m) and he proved comfortably superior to his age group rivals. He is raced by breeder and Westbury Stud principal Gerry Harvey, whose colours were also later carried to victory by Murch in the Greenlight Insurance Brokers Maiden (1215m) Willit had finished runner-up in his first trial on the all-weather track at Cambridge and showed pleasing improvement last month to go one better at Arawa Park before franking that form on race day. “He trialled well both times, he had been a little bit green but he’s a nice horse who has shown plenty of ability,” Sanders said. “We were expecting him to go well for sure, his work has been really good.” Willit had impressed Sweeney during his first preparation and patience has subsequently brought out the best in the gelding. “He showed a lot the last time around, but he went shine sore, so he had a bit more time out and he came back a stronger horse for it,” she said. Willit drew the outside barrier at Rotorua and was caught wide early before he slotted in one off the fence in third spot. He loomed up to challenge three wide at the top of the straight and forged clear under the urgings of rider Matthew Cameron to score by 1-3/4 lengths from Teak, with the debutante Florin making good ground for third after missing the start. “He got through the ground well and the further he goes the better he should be,” Sweeney said. “He’s been gelded but he acts like a colt, he’s got a bit of spirit about him and can be a bit quirky at times. “We’ll see how he pulls up after this and probably find a race for him in a fortnight or three weeks’ time. We’ll look after him and see where we end up.” Willit is a son of the More Than Ready mare Waterfalls who has a 100 percent record at stud after previous successes of her daughters Tereine and Catalina Bay. Waterfalls is a sister to the Listed Bernborough Handicap (1615m) from the family of the Gr.1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) winner and sire Catbird. The Danny Walker and Aaron Tata-trained Murch posted a deserved victory in the closing event after the Telperion three-year-old had placed in three of his previous four starts. Ridden by apprentice Triston Moodley, he sat close to the pace and finished determinedly to win narrowly in a driving finish. Murch’s dam is the Encosta De Lago mare Rubi DI Lago who is a half-sister to the Gr.2 Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) winner and Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) placegetter Divine Calling. 6. Sulabella made the journey down to Rotorua worthwhile for Michelle Bradley on Wednesday, producing a tough win in the Arawa Park Hotel Rotorua 1560. A five-year-old by Proisir, Sulabella has performed on all surfaces with three wins to her credit prior to her midweek triumph and was rated a $6.70 chance in a market headed by stakes winner Itza Charmdeel. Jumping from an outside barrier under Kelly Myers, the mare was prominent early sitting outside pacemaker Kahma Suitsya and the pair were never headed, eventually fighting out the finish with Sulabella prevailing by a short head. Bradley was pleased to see her mare back in form and appreciating a step-up in distance after finishing midfield over 1400m at Ruakaka last start. “I thought it was a pretty tough effort, I did have concerns about the track conditions even though she won on a heavy 10 at Pukekohe before. I think this was probably a bit more testing,” she said. “I said to Kelly that we had to be positive out of the gates and be right up there, I didn’t need her leading and she rode her perfectly sitting outside the leader, giving her every possible chance and she was tough to hang on. “She’s been there or thereabouts this preparation. She was probably looking for the mile at her last run on her home track (Ruakaka) and she’s run some nice races at Te Rapa so it was quite pleasing to get the win with her today.” Sulabella was bred by Cam and Eva Heron of Highline Thoroughbreds, who remained in the ownership after Bradley purchased her as a yearling at Karaka for $12,000. She has gone on to win four races and $87,590 in stakes. The mare was in winning form this time last season winning the 1400m progressive contest at the ITM/GIB Finals in July, a day Bradley remembers fondly after also claiming the stayers final with Bosch. “She (Sulabella) is well and truly beyond the 1400m now, we haven’t tried her at 2100m yet but I did say to the owners that I could see her getting the distance, it’s just when I decide to do that,” Bradley said. “We’ll have to sit down and decide what our options are going forward. “Bosch won the stayers final last year and he’ll be back again next weekend, and depending on the order of entry, No Plan Be will be starting there too.” View the full article
  7. Promising staying three-year-old Phats will tick an exciting box for Chrissy Bambry on Saturday at Flemington as her first runner in Australia. A homebred son of Embellish, Phats secured his maiden victory comfortably at Waverley in April and subsequent placings at Rating 75 level warranted a start in the Kiwifruit Cup (2100m), where he finished a creditable fourth behind Khan Hunter. Phats will contest the Mahogany Challenge Final (2500m) at the iconic venue, a race also featuring fellow Kiwi-bred and trained galloper Eliud. “Everything we’ve thrown at him he has coped with really well, he’s been racing above his grade very consistently,” Bambry said. “This race was always at the back of our minds, so we threw him in the deep end in the Kiwifruit Cup and he was running through the line well, so we thought it was definitely worth a crack bringing him over.” Bambry had an insight to the Victorian racing scene when preparing Lord Bouzeron to win their Australian debut in 2020 under brother-in-law Francis Finnegan, and is looking forward to having Phats under her name on Saturday. “He’s my first runner in Australia which is pretty exciting, but I’m pretty nervous too,” she said. “I prepared Lord Bouzeron for a similar race four years ago while my sister and her husband (Finnegan) were over in Cranbourne, so we’ve based his preparation pretty much on that. “We’ve just kept him in his little routine, he had a nice gallop on Monday on the course proper at Foxton and is flying over today. You never know how they will travel but he’s pretty chilled out, so I think he’s got everything ahead of him. “We’ll see how he goes on Saturday, he may stay over here for a couple of other races as well.” Closer to her Foxton base, Bambry will have one representative at the Awapuni Synthetic meeting on Friday in Saint Leonard, who will be chasing back-to-back wins in the Carters Ashhurst-Pohangina Cup (2140m). A son of Dial A Prayer, Saint Leonard entered the winner’s circle at the course at his second start for Bambry a fortnight ago, and will have Kavish Chowdhoory back in the saddle. “I’ve only had him this prep and he’s still very green and doesn’t know a lot,” Bambry said. “He can over race a little bit, so I asked Kavish not to let him pull his head off last time and he did the right thing when the brakes went on, letting the horse go around them. He’s a very fit horse and he just outstayed them. “I’ll leave the ride up to Kavish this time based on how the race pans out, he’s a horse that doesn’t really like being told what to do and Kavish knows him, so it’ll be in his hands.” View the full article
  8. Cambridge trainer Darrel Lang is looking forward to heading to Te Rapa on Saturday where nine-win gelding Open Minded will make his New Zealand debut in the Group One Turf Bar Sprint (1200m). Bred by Tim Harrison, the now seven-year-old gelding was initially in the care of Darryl’s father Roger, for whom he won his sole trial in New Zealand before being sold to clients of Anthony Freedman. The son of Jimmy Choux went on to win nine and place in four of his 28 starts in Australia, including victory in the Listed John Dillon Stakes (1400m), before he returned to New Zealand at the end of last year and entered the care of Darrel Lang, who now shares in the ownership of the horse with Harrison. “He is a credit to Sam and Anthony, they have done a great job with him,” Lang said. “He hasn’t been over-raced and has been well looked after. “He came back and had a few minor structural issues, but his legs were all fine. We ironed them out with Baz Dowling (equine chiropractor), who is probably the best in the business, and Peter Neal (equine muscle therapist). They have both done an excellent job on this horse. “We ironed those problems out before we brought him back into work. He arrived back in New Zealand on the 27th of December. We gave him plenty of time and then brought him back in and brought him up slowly.” Lang continued his patient approach through his racing preparation, and he said that patience is starting to pay off as Open Minded nears his race day resumption. “He had a jumpout here (Cambridge) and then we took him to Matamata for another jumpout and Troy Harris (jockey) was good enough to ride him for us and give us a good line on him,” Lang said. “We gave him another jumpout before trialling him at Rotorua, which was a fair trial (third behind Babylon Berlin). “We found after that trial that he was jamming his tongue back a bit, so we put a tongue-tie on him and trialled him the other day and he went really well (to win his 1100m heat at Pukekohe). “Our vet, Steven Christopher, went over him and said he couldn’t believe it was the same horse that he looked at couple of months ago. The horse is thriving and is physically sound, and mind-wise he is very bright.” Lang said he is excited about resuming Open Minded this weekend, although he has plenty of respect for his opposition and just wants to see his charge put in a good run. “I am looking forward to Saturday, he is going to take a run with eight or nine months away from the races, but if we can get him back to 90 percent as good as he was, he is going to be quite competitive,” he said. “Looking at the field, Guy Lowry’s horse (Wewillrock) is a standout, Stephen Autridge’s mare (Caitlyns Wish) is racing well, and I always have time for Gospodin, he is a nice horse. This is a fitness run for him and to see where we are at.” All going well following Saturday, Lang said he would love to target Open Minded towards the Gr.2 Waikato Stud Foxbridge Plate (1200m) at Te Rapa next month, a race he has a close association with. “The Foxbridge Plate is a race I would really like to win,” he said. “I won it as a jockey and Dad won it as a jockey, and my grandfather has had luck in the race as well. “That is what we are aiming for with him. He has got to show good form in his second run to make sure he is coming back right and to get his points up a bit too.” Open Minded is set to carry 57.5kg on Saturday, a much lighter impost than his last couple of starts in Australia. “I am impressed with our handicapper,” Lang said. “He left Australia a rating 91 and he has given him a chance at a rating 87, so that is good for the horse. He is a big, strong, 520 kilo horse, so he has no problems carrying weight, but this will be the lightest weight he has had on his back for quite a while.” Lang is hoping Open Minded can perform this spring not only for himself, but his staff and co-owner Harrison, who he said has been a great supporter over the years. “It is something to look forward to because our stable is a trading stable, so it is nice to have an open-class horse in the stable I can play with,” Lang said. “He is a special horse to the stable and the people who ride work for me love him. He is an old gentleman. I am very thankful to Tim for giving me half of the horse. “Tim is such a special owner and deserves a lot of credit. He is a single operator, breeds a lot of horses, and has about six or seven horses here at the stables. He has shown me the greatest amount of support since mum and dad passed away and this horse was special to mum and dad, even when they sold him for Tim. “It would be quite special to even win a race with him.” View the full article
  9. Talented and tenacious mare Town Cryer (NZ) (Tavistock) will be given every opportunity during her next preparation to break through at the highest level. The daughter of Tavistock is a multiple black-type winner and was spelled by trainer Roydon Bergerson following her gallant effort to finish runner-up in the Gr.1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m). “She’s been back in about five or six weeks now, she’s a really brave and tough mare,” Bergerson said. “She’ll go to the Hawke’s Bay carnival and the track should have the cut out of it, it could be a wet spring and that will suit her.” The first target on the wish list for Town Cryer is the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) with a return trip to Hastings planned for the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) and a yet to be determined outing between times. “We’ll keep her fresh and she’ll have her first quiet gallop next week and then two trials before she goes to the Tarzino,” Bergerson said. Town Cryer has seven victories to her credit, including the Gr.3 Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes (1400m), the Listed Anzac Mile (1600m) and the Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m). The Awapuni trainer also has a southern feature in mind for Town Cryer’s stablemate Bradman (NZ) (Pins). “He’s going to the Winter Cup (Gr.3, 1600m) and hopefully Queen Of Spades as well, I’ll just see how she goes on Saturday,” Bergerson said. Bradman was a winner at Trentham two runs back before he ran second in the Listed AGC Training Stakes (1600m) at Wanganui while five-time winner Queen Of Spades (NZ) (Iffraaj) will be resuming in the Three Wise Birds Handicap (1200m) at Hastings. “Bradman’s had a good season and he’ll run in the Opunake Cup (Listed, 1400m) and then hopefully onto the Winter Cup,” Bergerson said. Meanwhile, Farravallo (NZ) (Belardo) has proven a strong addition to the stable and will aim for two wins on the bounce in the Livamol Classic On Sale Now Handicap (1200m). Previously prepared by Paul Richards, the three-year-old son of Belardo finished fifth in his first appearance for Bergerson before a front-running victory in an age group event on his return to Trentham last month. “He has trained on really well since he won and he should have been closer on the first day down there,” Bergerson said. “He got lost across the crossing and Lily (Sutherland) said he hesitated to take a couple of gaps. “He seems to be happier when he’s rolling along in front so that’s probably going to be his position on Saturday. The rail will be right out so it might suit the frontrunners.” Bergerson will also have representatives at his home meeting on Friday on the synthetic track and gave debutante Our Giulia (NZ) (Savabeel) an outside chance in The Pavemasters 1400. “She ran last in a trial, but she has worked really well since and on the poly with the blinkers on she could be a roughie,” he said. By Savabeel, the filly is a daughter of the Pins mare Karla Bruni (NZ) who won seven races, including the Winter Cup, from Bergerson’s stable. View the full article
  10. What Kembla Grange Races Where Kembla Grange Racecourse – Princes Hwy, Kembla Grange NSW 2526 When Thursday, July 4, 2024 First Race 12:10pm AEST Visit Dabble NSW racing heads to Kembla Grange on Thursday for a competitive eight-part program that starts at 12:10pm AEST. The rail is out +8m between the 1100m marker and the winning post, while the remainder stays out +6m. The track is rated a Heavy 8 at the time of acceptances, and with more heavy rainfall on the way, punters can expect a bottomless surface for race-day. Best Bet at Kembla Grange: Zaragoza Zaragoza should relish the conditions on his first start for the Robert & Luke Price barn. The son of Street Boss had one win across his three starts for James Cummings, and that came at this course on rain-affected ground on January 3. His trials suggest he’s returning at peak fitness despite a 182-day spell, and with Chad Schofield likely to gain an economical run throughout, Zaragoza should prove too strong in the testing conditions. Best Bet Race 4 – #1 Zaragoza (5) 4yo Gelding | T: Robert & Luke Price | J: Chad Schofield (59.5kg) +190 with PlayUp Next Best at Kembla Grange: Carnegie Hill Carnegie Hill has caught the eye in two recent barrier trials and appears ready to strike on debut. The two-year-old proved too classy in his latest jump-out at Randwick on June 14, making every post a winner as he cleared out to score by 2.5 lengths. Punters should expect similar front-running tactics for race-day, and provided Chad Schofield can slide across to the rail from barrier eight, Carnegie Hill will prove hard to chase down. Next Best Race 2 – #2 Carnegie Hill (8) 2yo Colt | T: Michael Freedman | J: Chad Schofield (57kg) +800 with Bet365 Next Best Again at Kembla Grange: Sing A Love Song Sing A Love Song is building to a win fourth-up after a luckless effort on the Kensington circuit at Randwick on June 12. The son of Your Song made a late charge from the rear of the field and got within five lengths of Pure Alpha, suggesting a return to the provincials would be ideal. This appears a much easier assignment, and with Zac Lloyd set to take the reins for the first time, Sing A Love Song should get every chance to add a second career victory to the resume. Next Best Again Race 7 – #5 Sing A Love Song (10) 5yo Gelding | T: Sara Ryan | J: Zac Lloyd (56.5kg) +400 with Neds Thursday Kembla Grange quaddie – 4/7/2024 Kembla Grange quadrella selections Thursday, July 4, 2024 4-5-6-9-12 2-5-7 1-5-6-9-10 2-5-6-10-13 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article
  11. Town Cryer (inside) could be in for a lucrative spring campaign. Photo: Race Images Palmerston North Talented and tenacious mare Town Cryer will be given every opportunity during her next preparation to break through at the highest level. The daughter of Tavistock is a multiple black-type winner and was spelled by trainer Roydon Bergerson following her gallant effort to finish runner-up in the Group 1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m). “She’s been back in about five or six weeks now, she’s a really brave and tough mare,” Bergerson said. “She’ll go to the Hawke’s Bay carnival and the track should have the cut out of it, it could be a wet spring and that will suit her.” The first target on the wish list for Town Cryer is the Group 1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) with a return trip to Hastings planned for the Group 1 Livamol Classic (2040m) and a yet to be determined outing between times. “We’ll keep her fresh and she’ll have her first quiet gallop next week and then two trials before she goes to the Tarzino,” Bergerson said. Town Cryer has seven victories to her credit, including the Group 3 Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes (1400m), the Listed Anzac Mile (1600m) and the Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m). The Awapuni trainer also has a southern feature in mind for Town Cryer’s stablemate Bradman. “He’s going to the Winter Cup (Group 3, 1600m) and hopefully Queen Of Spades as well, I’ll just see how she goes on Saturday,” Bergerson said. Bradman was a winner at Trentham two runs back before he ran second in the Listed AGC Training Stakes (1600m) at Wanganui while five-time winner Queen Of Spades will be resuming at Hastings. “Bradman’s had a good season and he’ll run in the Opunake Cup (Listed, 1400m) and then hopefully onto the Winter Cup,” Bergerson said. 12. Sulabella and Kelly Myers winning at Arawa Park on Wednesday. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) Sulabella made the journey down to Rotorua worthwhile for Michelle Bradley on Wednesday, producing a tough win. A five-year-old by Proisir, Sulabella has performed on all surfaces with three wins to her credit prior to her midweek triumph and was rated a +550 chance with horse racing bookmakers in a market headed by stakes winner Itza Charmdeel. “Bosch won the stayers final last year and he’ll be back again next weekend, and depending on the order of entry, No Plan Be will be starting there too.” Horse racing news View the full article
  13. What Happy Valley Races Where Happy Valley Racecourse – Wong Nai Chung Rd, Happy Valley, Hong Kong When Thursday, July 4, 2024 First Race 6:40pm HKT (8:40pm AEST) Visit Dabble Hong Kong racing returns to the bright lights of Happy Valley Racecourse on Thursday evening, with an ultra-competitive nine-race program lined up. The rail is in the A position, and although there are some scattered showers forecast in the lead-up, it shouldn’t affect the Good 4 rating. The action is scheduled to get underway at 6:40pm local time. Best Bet at Happy Valley: Beauty Waves Beauty Waves brings a formidable record of three starts for two wins and a minor placing at this track and trip. His latest attempt was a narrow defeat at the hands of Midori Glory on May 22, with the four-year-old then picking up a jump-out victory on the Sha Tin all-weather circuit on June 25. This Class 2 is his toughest assignment to date, but with gate one giving Karis Teetan the option to lead or get the leader’s back, Beauty Waves should get every chance to continue his impressive preparation. Best Bet Race 2 – #6 Beauty Waves (2) 4yo Gelding | T: Pierre Ng | J: Karis Teetan (53.5kg) Bet with Bet365 Next Best at Happy Valley: Ma Comet Back-to-back runner-up performances should have Ma Comet ready to peak in this Class 4 contest. He looked the winner in his most recent effort at this course and distance on June 16, but Red Elegance came home with a withering burst to catch him in the shadows of the post. The four-year-old should gain the perfect stalking position from barrier three, and with a few less dangers to spoil the party, Ma Comet can finally break his Hong Kong maiden at the eighth time of asking. Next Best Race 3 – #2 Ma Comet (3) 4yo Gelding | T: Jamie Richards | J: Karis Teetan (61kg) Bet with Bet365 Best Value at Happy Valley: Racingrace After heading back to the trials to work on his barrier manners, Racingrace looks like terrific each-way value with online bookmakers. The gelding missed the start by some six lengths at Happy Valley on May 8, yet he showed a stunning turn of foot to get within 3.5 lengths of Ace Power. It seems he has done enough to satisfy the stewards, and coming third-up into this wide-open Class 4 race, Racingrace is worth forgiving. 16. Top End trainer Garry Lefoe has incurred yet another suspension on the eve of the Darwin Cup Carnival, which starts on Saturday. Darwin trainer Garry Lefoe has received a six-month suspension following an incident at Fannie Bay last week. Lefoe was issued with a Domestic Violence Order after assaulting Victorian jockey Mark Pegus, who is also a trainer, at a bar on March 30 following a race meeting at Pioneer Park during the Alice Springs Cup Carnival. On June 25, Lefoe approached Pegus during track work at the Darwin Turf Club and verbally abused him. Thoroughbred Racing NT Stewards held an inquiry following a complaint lodged by Pegus against Lefoe, where they conducted interviews and viewed CCTV footage. Subsequently, Lefoe was found guilty on Monday and suspended for engaging in improper conduct. Stewards had no option but to ban Lefoe, a former jockey who started his training career in 2016, following his initial confrontation with Pegus and other misdemeanours in Alice Springs. Lefoe was outed after he was charged with two offences by NT Police on March 30 – the suspension was effective from April 9 pending the outcome of court proceedings. On April 4, Stewards interviewed Lefoe in Alice Springs in relation to the events on March 30 before he provided a urine sample. On May 8, an inquiry took place at the DTC, where Lefoe pleaded guilty after a banned substance – cannabis – was detected in his urine sample. Lefoe had his license suspended for three months but was informed of the restrictions of the suspension. Stewards would stay six weeks of the suspension on the condition that by June 20 he provided documentation that he had continued with counseling that he had commenced prior to the hearing. On May 16, Lefoe appeared in Darwin Local Court and pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault and one count of possessing a quantity of cocaine. A 12-month Community Correction Order was imposed with specific restrictions relating to the possession and consumption of alcohol and banned substances. On May 21, Stewards convened for an inquiry at the DTC in regards to the March 30 incidents in Alice Springs. Lefoe pleaded guilty to assaulting Pegus by punching him in the head on multiple occasions where first aid treatment was required. Lefoe had his license suspended for three months, but Stewards decided to suspend the penalty for 12 months on the condition that there were no further breaches under the Australian Rules of Racing. He was further advised that he was required to submit random alcohol and drug testing over the next 12 months at the direction of the Stewards. On Saturday, Lefoe returned from suspension and had just the one runner when Canton Kid, who set the 1200m track record (1.07.09) on Darwin Cup Day last August and is a Palmerston Sprint (1200m) contender, saluted over 1000m (0-76). He only has a small team, including Expert Witness, Rising Fire, Mighty Murt, and Darwin Cup aspirant Cormorant, but Lefoe was hoping to transfer his horses to rival stables by Wednesday. In June 2022, Lefoe was banned for 15 months after a series of positive drug tests on his horses. It is believed that he will appeal his current six-month suspension. 20. Romantic Warrior ridden by James McDonald wins the Cox Plate. (Photo by George Sal/Racing Photos) Hong Kong’s beloved racehorse Romantic Warrior is currently the choice for Racing Victoria’s talent scout, Paul Bloodworth, for the upcoming 2024 Cox Plate event in Melbourne. However, Bloodworth is approaching the situation cautiously as he awaits news of the geldings return to Australian soil. Following a meeting with trainer Danny Shum in Hong Kong and ongoing discussions since Romantic Warrior’s victory in the Group 1 Yasuda Kinen race in Japan, Bloodworth remains optimistic but vigilant about the horse’s future plans for 2024. Shum has hinted that a decision regarding Romantic Warrior’s racing schedule will be revealed soon, with both local and overseas competitions being considered. While there is an option for Warrior to compete in the 2000m Tenno Sho event in Japan, which coincides with the Cox Plate weekend, it appears unlikely that he will participate in that race. 2023 Cox Plate Race Replay – Romantic Warrior The six-year-old gelding has won nine Group 1 races locally and internationally, including the Hong Kong Cup, HK Gold Cup, QE2 Cup, and Cox Plate. Romantic Warrior is currently tied as the $5.50 bookmaker favourite with the Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Pride Of Jenni. Horse racing news View the full article

  22. Vow And Declare ridden by John Allen wins the Herald Sun Zipping Classic at Caulfield Racecourse on November 26, 2022 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Scott Barbour/Racing Photos) Veteran stayer Vow And Declare is gearing up for another spring campaign after a hard-fought win in the Group 3 Tatts Cup at Eagle Farm in Australia. The eight-year-old triumphed in the race for the second time, marking a comeback five years after his earlier victory as a three-year-old in 2019. Despite securing a place in racing history with his Melbourne Cup win in the past, Vow And Declare won’t be aiming to repeat that feat in 2024. Matt Harrington, manager for trainer Danny O’Brien, mentioned that plans are underway for Vow And Declare’s races. Possible races lined up for Vow And Declare this spring include the Zipping Classic at Caulfield, which he conquered back in 2022. Harrington highlighted Vow And Declare’s recent win in the Tatts Cup as a testament to his enduring skill and talent. Vow And Declare set a track record with his win in the 2400-metre Tatt’s Cup, which underlined he still had a lot of fuel in the tank and added merit to the performance of Young Werther, according to Harrington Tattersalls Cup Race Replay – Vow And Declare His stablemate Young Werther also put up a show by finishing in the race. Harrington commended Young Werther’s effort, stating that he gave it his all and showed determination on the track. Vow And Declare is currently at $71 odds with the top Australian bookmakers for the Group 1 Caulfield Cup in October. Horse racing news View the full article
