Cambridge trainer Darrel Lang is looking forward to heading to Te Rapa on Saturday where nine-win gelding Open Minded will make his New Zealand debut in the Group One Turf Bar Sprint (1200m). Bred by Tim Harrison, the now seven-year-old gelding was initially in the care of Darryl’s father Roger, for whom he won his sole trial in New Zealand before being sold to clients of Anthony Freedman. The son of Jimmy Choux went on to win nine and place in four of his 28 starts in Australia, including victory in the Listed John Dillon Stakes (1400m), before he returned to New Zealand at the end of last year and entered the care of Darrel Lang, who now shares in the ownership of the horse with Harrison. “He is a credit to Sam and Anthony, they have done a great job with him,” Lang said. “He hasn’t been over-raced and has been well looked after. “He came back and had a few minor structural issues, but his legs were all fine. We ironed them out with Baz Dowling (equine chiropractor), who is probably the best in the business, and Peter Neal (equine muscle therapist). They have both done an excellent job on this horse. “We ironed those problems out before we brought him back into work. He arrived back in New Zealand on the 27th of December. We gave him plenty of time and then brought him back in and brought him up slowly.” Lang continued his patient approach through his racing preparation, and he said that patience is starting to pay off as Open Minded nears his race day resumption. “He had a jumpout here (Cambridge) and then we took him to Matamata for another jumpout and Troy Harris (jockey) was good enough to ride him for us and give us a good line on him,” Lang said. “We gave him another jumpout before trialling him at Rotorua, which was a fair trial (third behind Babylon Berlin). “We found after that trial that he was jamming his tongue back a bit, so we put a tongue-tie on him and trialled him the other day and he went really well (to win his 1100m heat at Pukekohe). “Our vet, Steven Christopher, went over him and said he couldn’t believe it was the same horse that he looked at couple of months ago. The horse is thriving and is physically sound, and mind-wise he is very bright.” Lang said he is excited about resuming Open Minded this weekend, although he has plenty of respect for his opposition and just wants to see his charge put in a good run. “I am looking forward to Saturday, he is going to take a run with eight or nine months away from the races, but if we can get him back to 90 percent as good as he was, he is going to be quite competitive,” he said. “Looking at the field, Guy Lowry’s horse (Wewillrock) is a standout, Stephen Autridge’s mare (Caitlyns Wish) is racing well, and I always have time for Gospodin, he is a nice horse. This is a fitness run for him and to see where we are at.” All going well following Saturday, Lang said he would love to target Open Minded towards the Gr.2 Waikato Stud Foxbridge Plate (1200m) at Te Rapa next month, a race he has a close association with. “The Foxbridge Plate is a race I would really like to win,” he said. “I won it as a jockey and Dad won it as a jockey, and my grandfather has had luck in the race as well. “That is what we are aiming for with him. He has got to show good form in his second run to make sure he is coming back right and to get his points up a bit too.” Open Minded is set to carry 57.5kg on Saturday, a much lighter impost than his last couple of starts in Australia. “I am impressed with our handicapper,” Lang said. “He left Australia a rating 91 and he has given him a chance at a rating 87, so that is good for the horse. He is a big, strong, 520 kilo horse, so he has no problems carrying weight, but this will be the lightest weight he has had on his back for quite a while.” Lang is hoping Open Minded can perform this spring not only for himself, but his staff and co-owner Harrison, who he said has been a great supporter over the years. “It is something to look forward to because our stable is a trading stable, so it is nice to have an open-class horse in the stable I can play with,” Lang said. “He is a special horse to the stable and the people who ride work for me love him. He is an old gentleman. I am very thankful to Tim for giving me half of the horse. “Tim is such a special owner and deserves a lot of credit. He is a single operator, breeds a lot of horses, and has about six or seven horses here at the stables. He has shown me the greatest amount of support since mum and dad passed away and this horse was special to mum and dad, even when they sold him for Tim. “It would be quite special to even win a race with him.” View the full article

Talented and tenacious mare Town Cryer (NZ) (Tavistock) will be given every opportunity during her next preparation to break through at the highest level. The daughter of Tavistock is a multiple black-type winner and was spelled by trainer Roydon Bergerson following her gallant effort to finish runner-up in the Gr.1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m). “She’s been back in about five or six weeks now, she’s a really brave and tough mare,” Bergerson said. “She’ll go to the Hawke’s Bay carnival and the track should have the cut out of it, it could be a wet spring and that will suit her.” The first target on the wish list for Town Cryer is the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) with a return trip to Hastings planned for the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) and a yet to be determined outing between times. “We’ll keep her fresh and she’ll have her first quiet gallop next week and then two trials before she goes to the Tarzino,” Bergerson said. Town Cryer has seven victories to her credit, including the Gr.3 Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes (1400m), the Listed Anzac Mile (1600m) and the Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m). The Awapuni trainer also has a southern feature in mind for Town Cryer’s stablemate Bradman (NZ) (Pins). “He’s going to the Winter Cup (Gr.3, 1600m) and hopefully Queen Of Spades as well, I’ll just see how she goes on Saturday,” Bergerson said. Bradman was a winner at Trentham two runs back before he ran second in the Listed AGC Training Stakes (1600m) at Wanganui while five-time winner Queen Of Spades (NZ) (Iffraaj) will be resuming in the Three Wise Birds Handicap (1200m) at Hastings. “Bradman’s had a good season and he’ll run in the Opunake Cup (Listed, 1400m) and then hopefully onto the Winter Cup,” Bergerson said. Meanwhile, Farravallo (NZ) (Belardo) has proven a strong addition to the stable and will aim for two wins on the bounce in the Livamol Classic On Sale Now Handicap (1200m). Previously prepared by Paul Richards, the three-year-old son of Belardo finished fifth in his first appearance for Bergerson before a front-running victory in an age group event on his return to Trentham last month. “He has trained on really well since he won and he should have been closer on the first day down there,” Bergerson said. “He got lost across the crossing and Lily (Sutherland) said he hesitated to take a couple of gaps. “He seems to be happier when he’s rolling along in front so that’s probably going to be his position on Saturday. The rail will be right out so it might suit the frontrunners.” Bergerson will also have representatives at his home meeting on Friday on the synthetic track and gave debutante Our Giulia (NZ) (Savabeel) an outside chance in The Pavemasters 1400. “She ran last in a trial, but she has worked really well since and on the poly with the blinkers on she could be a roughie,” he said. By Savabeel, the filly is a daughter of the Pins mare Karla Bruni (NZ) who won seven races, including the Winter Cup, from Bergerson’s stable. View the full article

What Kembla Grange Races Where Kembla Grange Racecourse – Princes Hwy, Kembla Grange NSW 2526 When Thursday, July 4, 2024 First Race 12:10pm AEST Visit Dabble NSW racing heads to Kembla Grange on Thursday for a competitive eight-part program that starts at 12:10pm AEST. The rail is out +8m between the 1100m marker and the winning post, while the remainder stays out +6m. The track is rated a Heavy 8 at the time of acceptances, and with more heavy rainfall on the way, punters can expect a bottomless surface for race-day. Best Bet at Kembla Grange: Zaragoza Zaragoza should relish the conditions on his first start for the Robert & Luke Price barn. The son of Street Boss had one win across his three starts for James Cummings, and that came at this course on rain-affected ground on January 3. His trials suggest he’s returning at peak fitness despite a 182-day spell, and with Chad Schofield likely to gain an economical run throughout, Zaragoza should prove too strong in the testing conditions. Best Bet Race 4 – #1 Zaragoza (5) 4yo Gelding | T: Robert & Luke Price | J: Chad Schofield (59.5kg) +190 with PlayUp Next Best at Kembla Grange: Carnegie Hill Carnegie Hill has caught the eye in two recent barrier trials and appears ready to strike on debut. The two-year-old proved too classy in his latest jump-out at Randwick on June 14, making every post a winner as he cleared out to score by 2.5 lengths. Punters should expect similar front-running tactics for race-day, and provided Chad Schofield can slide across to the rail from barrier eight, Carnegie Hill will prove hard to chase down. Next Best Race 2 – #2 Carnegie Hill (8) 2yo Colt | T: Michael Freedman | J: Chad Schofield (57kg) +800 with Bet365 Next Best Again at Kembla Grange: Sing A Love Song Sing A Love Song is building to a win fourth-up after a luckless effort on the Kensington circuit at Randwick on June 12. The son of Your Song made a late charge from the rear of the field and got within five lengths of Pure Alpha, suggesting a return to the provincials would be ideal. This appears a much easier assignment, and with Zac Lloyd set to take the reins for the first time, Sing A Love Song should get every chance to add a second career victory to the resume. Next Best Again Race 7 – #5 Sing A Love Song (10) 5yo Gelding | T: Sara Ryan | J: Zac Lloyd (56.5kg) +400 with Neds Thursday Kembla Grange quaddie – 4/7/2024 Kembla Grange quadrella selections Thursday, July 4, 2024 4-5-6-9-12 2-5-7 1-5-6-9-10 2-5-6-10-13 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article

Sulabella and Kelly Myers winning at Arawa Park on Wednesday. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) Sulabella made the journey down to Rotorua worthwhile for Michelle Bradley on Wednesday, producing a tough win. A five-year-old by Proisir, Sulabella has performed on all surfaces with three wins to her credit prior to her midweek triumph and was rated a +550 chance with horse racing bookmakers in a market headed by stakes winner Itza Charmdeel. Jumping from an outside barrier under Kelly Myers, the mare was prominent early sitting outside pacemaker Kahma Suitsya and the pair were never headed, eventually fighting out the finish with Sulabella prevailing by a short head. Bradley was pleased to see her mare back in form and appreciating a step-up in distance after finishing midfield over 1400m at Ruakaka last start. “I thought it was a pretty tough effort, I did have concerns about the track conditions even though she won on a heavy 10 at Pukekohe before. I think this was probably a bit more testing,” she said. “I said to Kelly that we had to be positive out of the gates and be right up there, I didn’t need her leading and she rode her perfectly sitting outside the leader, giving her every possible chance and she was tough to hang on. “She’s been there or thereabouts this preparation. She was probably looking for the mile at her last run on her home track (Ruakaka) and she’s run some nice races at Te Rapa so it was quite pleasing to get the win with her today.” Sulabella was bred by Cam and Eva Heron of Highline Thoroughbreds, who remained in the ownership after Bradley purchased her as a yearling at Karaka for $12,000. She has gone on to win four races and $87,590 in stakes. The mare was in winning form this time last season winning the 1400m progressive contest at the ITM/GIB Finals in July, a day Bradley remembers fondly after also claiming the stayers final with Bosch. “She (Sulabella) is well and truly beyond the 1400m now, we haven’t tried her at 2100m yet but I did say to the owners that I could see her getting the distance, it’s just when I decide to do that,” Bradley said. “We’ll have to sit down and decide what our options are going forward. “Bosch won the stayers final last year and he’ll be back again next weekend, and depending on the order of entry, No Plan Be will be starting there too.” Horse racing news View the full article

What Happy Valley Races Where Happy Valley Racecourse – Wong Nai Chung Rd, Happy Valley, Hong Kong When Thursday, July 4, 2024 First Race 6:40pm HKT (8:40pm AEST) Visit Dabble Hong Kong racing returns to the bright lights of Happy Valley Racecourse on Thursday evening, with an ultra-competitive nine-race program lined up. The rail is in the A position, and although there are some scattered showers forecast in the lead-up, it shouldn’t affect the Good 4 rating. The action is scheduled to get underway at 6:40pm local time. Best Bet at Happy Valley: Beauty Waves Beauty Waves brings a formidable record of three starts for two wins and a minor placing at this track and trip. His latest attempt was a narrow defeat at the hands of Midori Glory on May 22, with the four-year-old then picking up a jump-out victory on the Sha Tin all-weather circuit on June 25. This Class 2 is his toughest assignment to date, but with gate one giving Karis Teetan the option to lead or get the leader’s back, Beauty Waves should get every chance to continue his impressive preparation. Best Bet Race 2 – #6 Beauty Waves (2) 4yo Gelding | T: Pierre Ng | J: Karis Teetan (53.5kg) Bet with Bet365 Next Best at Happy Valley: Ma Comet Back-to-back runner-up performances should have Ma Comet ready to peak in this Class 4 contest. He looked the winner in his most recent effort at this course and distance on June 16, but Red Elegance came home with a withering burst to catch him in the shadows of the post. The four-year-old should gain the perfect stalking position from barrier three, and with a few less dangers to spoil the party, Ma Comet can finally break his Hong Kong maiden at the eighth time of asking. Next Best Race 3 – #2 Ma Comet (3) 4yo Gelding | T: Jamie Richards | J: Karis Teetan (61kg) Bet with Bet365 Best Value at Happy Valley: Racingrace After heading back to the trials to work on his barrier manners, Racingrace looks like terrific each-way value with online bookmakers. The gelding missed the start by some six lengths at Happy Valley on May 8, yet he showed a stunning turn of foot to get within 3.5 lengths of Ace Power. It seems he has done enough to satisfy the stewards, and coming third-up into this wide-open Class 4 race, Racingrace is worth forgiving. Top End trainer Garry Lefoe has incurred yet another suspension on the eve of the Darwin Cup Carnival, which starts on Saturday. Darwin trainer Garry Lefoe has received a six-month suspension following an incident at Fannie Bay last week. Lefoe was issued with a Domestic Violence Order after assaulting Victorian jockey Mark Pegus, who is also a trainer, at a bar on March 30 following a race meeting at Pioneer Park during the Alice Springs Cup Carnival. On June 25, Lefoe approached Pegus during track work at the Darwin Turf Club and verbally abused him. Thoroughbred Racing NT Stewards held an inquiry following a complaint lodged by Pegus against Lefoe, where they conducted interviews and viewed CCTV footage. Subsequently, Lefoe was found guilty on Monday and suspended for engaging in improper conduct. Stewards had no option but to ban Lefoe, a former jockey who started his training career in 2016, following his initial confrontation with Pegus and other misdemeanours in Alice Springs. Lefoe was outed after he was charged with two offences by NT Police on March 30 – the suspension was effective from April 9 pending the outcome of court proceedings. On April 4, Stewards interviewed Lefoe in Alice Springs in relation to the events on March 30 before he provided a urine sample. On May 8, an inquiry took place at the DTC, where Lefoe pleaded guilty after a banned substance – cannabis – was detected in his urine sample. Lefoe had his license suspended for three months but was informed of the restrictions of the suspension. Stewards would stay six weeks of the suspension on the condition that by June 20 he provided documentation that he had continued with counseling that he had commenced prior to the hearing. On May 16, Lefoe appeared in Darwin Local Court and pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault and one count of possessing a quantity of cocaine. A 12-month Community Correction Order was imposed with specific restrictions relating to the possession and consumption of alcohol and banned substances. On May 21, Stewards convened for an inquiry at the DTC in regards to the March 30 incidents in Alice Springs. Lefoe pleaded guilty to assaulting Pegus by punching him in the head on multiple occasions where first aid treatment was required. Lefoe had his license suspended for three months, but Stewards decided to suspend the penalty for 12 months on the condition that there were no further breaches under the Australian Rules of Racing. He was further advised that he was required to submit random alcohol and drug testing over the next 12 months at the direction of the Stewards. On Saturday, Lefoe returned from suspension and had just the one runner when Canton Kid, who set the 1200m track record (1.07.09) on Darwin Cup Day last August and is a Palmerston Sprint (1200m) contender, saluted over 1000m (0-76). He only has a small team, including Expert Witness, Rising Fire, Mighty Murt, and Darwin Cup aspirant Cormorant, but Lefoe was hoping to transfer his horses to rival stables by Wednesday. In June 2022, Lefoe was banned for 15 months after a series of positive drug tests on his horses. It is believed that he will appeal his current six-month suspension. Romantic Warrior ridden by James McDonald wins the Cox Plate. (Photo by George Sal/Racing Photos) Hong Kong’s beloved racehorse Romantic Warrior is currently the choice for Racing Victoria’s talent scout, Paul Bloodworth, for the upcoming 2024 Cox Plate event in Melbourne. However, Bloodworth is approaching the situation cautiously as he awaits news of the geldings return to Australian soil. Following a meeting with trainer Danny Shum in Hong Kong and ongoing discussions since Romantic Warrior’s victory in the Group 1 Yasuda Kinen race in Japan, Bloodworth remains optimistic but vigilant about the horse’s future plans for 2024. Shum has hinted that a decision regarding Romantic Warrior’s racing schedule will be revealed soon, with both local and overseas competitions being considered. While there is an option for Warrior to compete in the 2000m Tenno Sho event in Japan, which coincides with the Cox Plate weekend, it appears unlikely that he will participate in that race. 2023 Cox Plate Race Replay – Romantic Warrior The six-year-old gelding has won nine Group 1 races locally and internationally, including the Hong Kong Cup, HK Gold Cup, QE2 Cup, and Cox Plate. Romantic Warrior is currently tied as the $5.50 bookmaker favourite with the Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Pride Of Jenni. Horse racing news View the full article

Vow And Declare ridden by John Allen wins the Herald Sun Zipping Classic at Caulfield Racecourse on November 26, 2022 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Scott Barbour/Racing Photos) Veteran stayer Vow And Declare is gearing up for another spring campaign after a hard-fought win in the Group 3 Tatts Cup at Eagle Farm in Australia. The eight-year-old triumphed in the race for the second time, marking a comeback five years after his earlier victory as a three-year-old in 2019. Despite securing a place in racing history with his Melbourne Cup win in the past, Vow And Declare won’t be aiming to repeat that feat in 2024. Matt Harrington, manager for trainer Danny O’Brien, mentioned that plans are underway for Vow And Declare’s races. Possible races lined up for Vow And Declare this spring include the Zipping Classic at Caulfield, which he conquered back in 2022. Harrington highlighted Vow And Declare’s recent win in the Tatts Cup as a testament to his enduring skill and talent. Vow And Declare set a track record with his win in the 2400-metre Tatt’s Cup, which underlined he still had a lot of fuel in the tank and added merit to the performance of Young Werther, according to Harrington Tattersalls Cup Race Replay – Vow And Declare His stablemate Young Werther also put up a show by finishing in the race. Harrington commended Young Werther’s effort, stating that he gave it his all and showed determination on the track. Vow And Declare is currently at $71 odds with the top Australian bookmakers for the Group 1 Caulfield Cup in October. Horse racing news View the full article

Fasig-Tipton Digital has been hitting the mark with flash sales as of late. While the auction house is selective when it comes to picking out the right kind of horse to offer in these exclusive auctions, the two flash sales that they've conducted so far this year have been shining success stories for the sellers and for Fasig-Tipton. Mensa, the first 2-year-old winner for his freshman sire Complexity, set a record as the most expensive offering to sell on Fasig-Tipton Digital when he was purchased by John Stewart's Resolute Bloodstock for $740,000 on April 29. Last week, Cloudy Dancer (GB)(Invincible Spirit {Ire}) became the subject of a second flash sale after her son Shareholder (Not This Time) won the G2 Norfolk Stakes at the Royal Ascot meeting. The 8-year-old mare sold on Friday, June 28 for $430,000 to David Hutson. The TDN is in the process of launching a new weekly podcast, The Racing Business Hour. Hosted by Bill Finley and Katie Petrunyak, the show will focus on news in racing that has a direct impact on businesses within the industry. As part of our pilot episode, we brought in Fasig-Tipton's Director of Digital Sales Leif Aaron to discuss the growth of flash sales within the digital sales arena. TDN: What was the process like of getting in touch with the Cloudy Dancer's owner, Skyfall Thoroughbreds LLC, and then getting the ball rolling to conduct a flash sale? LA: Well Grant [Williamson] and Boyd [Browning] had gotten in touch with the owner about the possibility of doing a flash sale. I was actually on vacation with my family. They called me and said they were wanting to do this and asked me what I thought. I thought it was a great opportunity to show what our digital website is capable of to capitalize on an update. I was thrilled to have her on there and it ended up being very successful. TDN: Bidding opened up on Cloudy Dancer just five days after Shareholder's Norfolk win. Was that a tight turnaround to get everything in motion? LA: For a one-horse sale, it's not a tight turnaround. It is tough in a normal digital situation because we only give ourselves about a week to turn around a catalog. We will have 100 to 150 head in a catalog and we only have a week to turn that around. That is a ton of work as far as collecting paperwork, getting good pictures and video, getting all the vetting done and all of that, so when you take that and you turn it into one horse, it seems very easy compared to what it's like to do a monthly digital auction. TDN: Cloudy Dancer drew 2,432 views over the four days of bidding. That's a huge number, but how do you ensure that you're getting the right people and the right type of buyers visiting the website and checking out her page? LA: I think the best part for me about Digital is that it's still Fasig-Tipton, the oldest auction house in North America. So there's a huge emailing list we have and we use the TDN to get the word out. Getting this in front of the people that we think need to have it is easy, but when you take a guy like Mr. Hutson who hasn't been as active as he had been in the past, none of us would have expected him to be the purchaser of the horse. So that's kind of the beauty of digital is that it's bringing in a whole new segment of the market that we're not expecting. We have our expectations of the buyers that will come to the sales, but when you go digital, we've had a whole other group of people come in that have never done business with Fasig-Tipton. So it's exciting to see growth in the auction business in general, which is great for everyone. TDN: We've all grown so accustomed to the digital sales arena, but it was only a little over two years ago that you launched Fasig-Tipton Digital. What have you learned and how has the platform evolved since you first started? LA: We have taken baby steps and learned the best way to set the catalogs up with what is going to sell during certain times of the year. We've gotten to the point now where we know it's hard to sell a broodmare or broodmare prospect in June if she doesn't have an update. In general, mindframes are starting to move towards racehorses. I would have told you in the beginning that I think young stock–weanlings and yearlings–would never be able to be sold online. They would always be in person. But now we're seeing a boom of those kinds of horses being sold online. It has evolved at a very rapid pace. I mean, exponential growth. We've already sold more horses this year than we did last year. When we first started doing it, it was about how often can we have a sale with a critical mass of horses? Now we don't have a choice. If we don't have a sale, people are saying, 'Why aren't you having a sale this month?' Which is a blessing for us, there's no doubt about that. The whole point in doing this all along was to offer our clients another avenue to sell horses and to make it more liquid. I think from the sellers to the buyers to us, it has been beneficial for everyone involved and I think that's why it is working so well. We have the highest average in digital sales in the world. We also have the highest clearance rate. I think the thing I'm most proud of this year is that we've boasted a 90% clearance rate and we've sold over 500 head of horses. There is just not another segment of the market that is as strong as that. I think when you do things that are of benefit to your client, that's why it works. This was put out here for them to use and they have. We're very appreciative of that and I think the clients are too. I have a lot of people that are returning customers. TDN: So now you have monthly digital sales, flash sales, and of course the “old school” in-person sales. If you're approaching an owner about potentially selling through Fasig-Tipton, under what circumstances are you going to recommend a flash sale, a monthly digital sale, or waiting until the next in-person sale comes around? LA: So I'll say this: flash sales are extremely difficult. It's very difficult to get a huge update no matter who you are. To get that horse winning the Norfolk like he did, to look like he could possibly be one of the best 2-year-olds in Europe, that's hard to get. It's even harder to find an owner that is realistic about what the value of the horse may be. So we've been approached quite a few times about different flash sales where owners had astronomical expectations, but that's the one thing for me that's so important is if you do a flash sale, it has to work. That's a lot of pressure, but if we put up flash sales and they RNA every time, no one is going to return to that. So for us, it's getting that recipe right of a huge update, a realistic owner and a buying base that is willing to participate. That's why we have so few of them is because all of those buttons have to be pressed in order for us to take that task on and that's why the ones we've had have been so successful. When it comes to deciding between a flash sale and a monthly sale, you know when you have a flash sale horse. It's a huge update and it doesn't come around that often. With the monthly digital sales, it depends on the time of year. Right now, I would say you want any racehorse you can put online. With our July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale coming up, a lot of people feel more comfortable selling in that arena and that's great. I'm glad that Fasig-Tipton has options for people to choose from going in person to going digital. Last Saturday, the penultimate day of the Queensland Racing Carnival took centre stage at Eagle Farm, while Caulfield and Rosehill held strong support cards. From the Caulfield and Rosehill meetings, we have found three runners that are worth following at their next start. You can put these horses into your blackbook with your chosen bookmaker and receive notifications before they run again. Caulfield Track rating: Soft 7 Rail position: +12m entire circuit Race 8: 3YO Handicap (1000m) | Time: 0:58.03 Horse to follow: Fleetwood (3rd) The race that caused the most controversy was the eighth event at Caulfield, as the heavily-backed favourite, Fleetwood, missed the jump by five lengths. The James Cummings-trained galloper was ridden up for most of the 1000m contest, but given the slow tempo and margin he gave the leaders, he never played a role in the race. Post-race, the vision of the barriers showed that a barrier attendant may have held onto the son of Encryption a little too long and therefore could have cost him a fair start. However, the stewards saw it differently and declared him a starter, a decision that outraged punters across the country. When to bet: Even with the unfortunate circumstances, Fleetwood ran home strongly and finished third, so wherever he goes next, he will have plenty of supporters. Rosehill Track rating: Heavy 8 Rail position: True entire circuit Race 9: Benchmark 88 Handicap (1500m) | Time: 1:32.45 Horse to follow: Aramco (5th) After racing under the care of Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr for his first eight starts, Aramco was transferred to the Chris Waller stable, and he produced an encouraging performance over 1500m first-up. The son of Sea The Moon has good form over 2000m from his last preparation, so 1500m was always going to be short of his best, but connections would have been impressed with their geldings last 200m, as he ran through the line strongly. Although the five-year-old gelding was running on Heavy ground for the first time, he lengthened nicely in the concluding stages to finish fifth, beaten just over a length by Highlights. When to bet: A rise in trip second-up looks to be the ideal plan, and with an 1800m race in the same grade scheduled for Randwick on July 13, Aramco will go around as a top chance. Race 10: Benchmark 78 Handicap (1800m) | Time: 1:52.35 Horse to follow: Don Diego De Vega (2nd) Don Diego De Vega made his Australian debut last Saturday at Rosehill for the Annabel Neasham stable, and he was very good behind another European import, Bear On The Loose, who was heavily backed and saluted as an impressive winner. The son of Lope De Vega has solid form over 2000m-plus in Europe, and he was coming off two trials over 1050m and 1200m in readiness for the 1800m event last weekend. This four-year-old gelding only had five starts before making his way to Australia, and after his second-place finish first-up, he will only improve the further he rises in distance throughout this preparation. When to bet: If Neasham and her team can find a race over 2000m for Don Diego De Vega second-up in a similar grade, he will prove very hard to beat.
