  1. Rich Strike (Keen Ice), who upset the GI Kentucky Derby at 80-1 in 2022, is set to join trainer Bill Mott, according to owner Rick Dawson. Rich Strike was last seen finishing fifth for his former trainer Eric Reed in the 2023 running of the GII Alysheba S. at Churchill Downs. “Richie visited Rood & Riddle this morning for his final ultrasound test,” Dawson said in a Facebook post on Thursday. “All went as good as could be expected & better than expectations on several issues – our plan is to move him to HofF Trainer Bill Mott in a few days. Richie's training will be stepped up slowly & forwardly over the next month or two. Should he continue to stay sound after more training is implemented we will look for a first race that fits him coming back from over a year off the track.” Withdrawn by Dawson from last year's Keeneland November Sale, Rich Strike subsequently underwent stem cell treatments — under the advice of Dr. Larry Bramlage — aimed at healing issues with his suspensory ligaments in his two front legs. 2. Stan Tsaikos, a long-time rider in Victoria and Tasmania, returns to scale aboard Dakota Lee for Alice Springs trainer Terry Gillett after saluting at Pioneer Park where the five-year-old mare is unbeaten in eight starts. He has had big days in Alice Springs previously, and with a decent book of rides, Stan Tsaikos could be the one to follow on Sunday. Tsaikos, who continues to commute from his Geelong base to ride in Alice Springs and Darwin, will partner Terry Gillett’s Dakota Lee, Family Ties and Altar Boy, as well as Dan Morgan’s Maid Of Mystery. The quartet are considered to have strong hopes, with Tsaikos having ridden five winners during a meeting at Pioneer Park and four winners on two other occasions. He has won the Alice Springs and Provincial jockeys’ premiership twice and won the Alice Springs Cup on Kerry Petrick’s Venting in April. That’s after winning the Pioneer Sprint (Supreme Attraction), NT Guineas (Valley Prince), Chief Ministers Cup (That’s Justified) and The Soldier Lightning (Early Crow) in the past. Alice Springs’ pride and joy Dakota Lee, the $1.85 favourite with online bookmakers, will aim to make it nine wins from as many starts at her home track when she takes on open company over 1200m. The five-year-old mare, who developed claustrophobia two years ago when being placed into the stalls before being sent to Ballarat trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy for therapy, could head to Darwin for the Palmerston Sprint (1200m) in August, should she salute. The daughter of Kuroshio, who also injured her suspensory with the McEvoy’s, won seven straight for the Gillett’s before she was scratched from the NT Guineas (1600m) in April 2022 when she refused to enter the gates. She made her return at Moonee Valley in February when ninth over 1000m (BM64) before making a triumphant home-coming over 1000m at open level on Alice Springs Cup Day (April 7) with Gillett’s apprentice daughter Dakota-Lee, whom the horse was named after, the pilot for the first time. Tsaikos, who has had six wins aboard Dakota Lee, replaces Dakota-Lee on Sunday, with the apprentice riding the Gillett’s new arrival Morgenstern. “Obviously, I’m looking forward to getting back on Dakota Lee,” Tsaikos said. “Fingers crossed, we can try and fix her barrier manners. “Not that she is any trouble in the barriers, it’s more getting her in – it’s a confidence thing. “Terry hasn’t made his mind up yet, but I believe taking Dakota Lee to Darwin is on the cards. “She could probably hold herself well in the Palmerston. Family Ties ($7.50), who suffered a narrow loss two weeks ago after a spell, will feature over 1100m (0-64) and Altar Boy, victorious by 6.5 lengths in his second NT start a fortnight ago, lines up over 1400m (0-64) on Sunday. Altar Boy ($1.65 fav) was formerly trained in Townsville by Sarah Acornley, the wife of former Darwin jockey Carl Spry, a current jockey and former trainer in Townsville. Maid Of Mystery ($4.20 fav) makes her Alice Springs debut in a 1400m maiden and will jump from the outside gate in the 12-horse field. The four-year-old mare arrives from the stable of Ken and Kasey Keys in Victoria with her best performance from four starts, a third over 1600m at Cranbourne. Horse racing news View the full article

The third 'TDN Rising Star' to come out of the freshman sire class in just 24 hours, MIDLAND MONEY (c, 2, Shancelot–Magnolias In Bloom, by Flatter) went gate to wire Friday at Santa Anita to become the second winner and a new 'TDN Rising Star' for his sire (by Shanghai Bobby). The $650,000 OBS March grad broke with speed from his outside draw and quickly asserted himself on the front, putting away his closet rival in Smash It (Star Guitar) and coming home under a hand ride by Juan Hernandez to win decisively. 8. By Jonny Turner Losing one of her best drives may not spoil Kerryn Tomlinson’s day at Ascot Park on Saturday. Tomlinson will be unable to reunite with Dont Ask with the trotter retired and scratched from race 8. The junior driver recently formed a great combination with the mare, trained by Alister Black. “She would be one of the best trotters I have driven regularly down here,” Tomlinson said. “She had great manners and good speed, she was a lovely mare to drive.” Tomlinson isn’t lacking horsepower to work with on Saturday, with the Oamaru reinswoman teaming up with the unbeaten Southside Of Heaven. The mare will be out to make it four from four for trainer Brent McIntyre in race 9, the All Purpose Engineering/Regent Car Court Mobile Pace. Starting from barrier 8 won’t be easy for the pair, but Tomlinson is hopeful her charge has the class to overcome the outside of the front line. “She has to be a very good chance, she has shown she can do work in her races and finish off.” “She looks very versatile, so hopefully she can work into it from the wide draw.” “We should have a few options, we can choose when we want to get into it.” Night Watch looks a solid eachway hope for Tomlinson in race 6, the Stirling Auto Repairs/Regent Car Court Handicap Trot. Though the junior driver would prefer her mare was off the front line, her 15m handicap looks workable. “She looks a good eachway chance.” “She does prefer to be off the front because she is a good beginner and she likes to bowl along in front.” “Hopefully she can still step away fast and get handy enough.” Sargent Best looks another solid eachway hope for Tomlinson on Saturday. The pacer comes into race 5, the Autosure Handicap Pace, on the back of a consistent run of form for trainer Matthew Williamson. “He hasn’t had a stand for a while but knowing Matty, he will have given him plenty of practice.” “If he can step away and stay handy he should be a pretty good chance, he’s in good form.” Tomlinson also combines with Durrant in race 7, the Final Touch/Regent Car Court Mobile Pace, and has also been reasonably consistent recently. “He hasn’t got the best draw (11) but he has been racing pretty well and he was unlucky last start.” Tomlinson and Shezza Vinny have been handed an even tougher draw in race 3, the Creation Signs Mobile Pace, with the pair set to start from barrier 14. 9. OCALA, FL – The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's June Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training got a late boost from its supplemental section when a colt by Uncle Mo brought the top price of $375,000 during Friday's final session of the three-day auction. The 2024 June sale concluded with numbers just a tick off the sale's 2023 renewal. A total of 587 head grossed $21,428,800 during the three-day auction, with the average of $36,506 down 3.3% from last year's figure and the median down 5% at $20,000. Ramon Morales purchased Friday's session topper–and the sale's third highest-priced juvenile–on behalf of Marc Tacher from Julie Davies's consignment. Earlier in Friday's session, the Green family's D. J. Stable went to $325,000 to acquire a colt by Justify from the de Meric Sales consignment. The colt was one of five juveniles purchased by the operation at the June sale. “I think there are good spots and there are soft spots,” Jon Green said of the market this week in Ocala. “That's the way it's been for all of these auctions over the last couple of years. We are kind of waiting and picking our spots to aggressively bid on the top ones we like. At this sale, we probably have a strike rate of 33%, which means we are getting outbid on two out of every three horses that we like. So there is definitely a strong market in pockets and I think if you bring a nice horse to any of these auctions, you are going to get rewarded for it.” As the juvenile sales season in Ocala concluded, Greg Martin of Britton Peak said he was happy with his consignment's results this spring. “Personally, it went well,” Martin said. “I was very happy with the results all through the sales, March, April and June. It's like every sale, you bring quality and people are going to pay. For horses who work well and vet well–there are so many hoops you have to jump through–but at the end of the day, if you get past that last hurdle, people pay. You have to bring the right pedigree, you have to bring the right animal. But it's like anything else, if you bring the product, people will pay for it.” Britton Peak sold all six through the ring at the three-day June sale, led by a $250,000 daughter of Munnings. The consignment also sold a colt by Tiz the Law for $500,000 at the OBS Spring sale. Looking ahead to the yearling sales, Martin said he plans to repeat the formula which has worked for him in the past. “I am going to stick with what I've been successful with,” he said. “If the right horses are there, people are on them. People are sharp. Once in a while, you will find a diamond in the rough, but most likely, you are going to have to pay. I am going to be cautious, I always am, and I will manage the risk.” Marc Tacher | Photos by Z Tacher Strikes Late for Uncle Mo Colt With just a few hips left in the OBS June sale Friday, trainer Ramon Morales bid $375,000 to acquire a colt by Uncle Mo (hip 1021) on behalf of Marc Tacher. “Marc came last week and saw the horse and he loved him,” Morales said. “We waited for him and are happy to get him.” Consigned by Julie Davies, the bay is out of stakes winner Kim K (Will Take Charge), a daughter of multiple stakes winner Trip for A.J. (Trippi). He was purchased by 3 Friends for $185,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale and, supplemented to the June sale, galloped during last week's under-tack show. Tacher's Sonata Stable enjoyed a runner-up effort with Arzak (Not This Time) last weekend at Saratoga in the GI Jaipur S. He purchased the 6-year-old for $575,000 from Julie Davies's consignment at the 2020 OBS Spring sale. Justify Colt Joins D.J. Stable A colt by Justify (hip 768) will be carrying the colors of the Green family's D.J. Stable and Robert Cotran after selling for $325,000 early in Friday's final session of the OBS June sale. The juvenile is out of Intentonseduction (Street Sense), who is a daughter of Giant Mover (Giant's Causeway) and is a half-sister to graded winners Family Tree (Smart Strike) and Liora (Candy Ride {Arg}). Liora was second in the 2018 GI Kentucky Oaks and Family Tree's son Heroic Move won the recent GIII Steve Sexton Mile. Justify | Sarah Andrew “When you are coming to any of these 2-year-old sales, you are looking for a couple of things,” Jon Green said. “One is pedigree, the other is longevity as far as, is the horse going to run two turns. Certainly, this Justify colt checked both of those boxes. The horse is going to go to Joe Orseno, who has Hades for us and a number of other horses. He was not only the top horse on his list, but also on top of Mark Casse's list as well. We were happy to get him for the price we did.” West Bloodstock purchased the colt for $45,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale. He was consigned by De Meric Sales. “One of the strengths of the OBS June sale is that it gives horses that have a little bit of a problem or hit a bump in the road or have a stumble on the way, it gives them an opportunity to show what they can do without being pressed to try to do it earlier than they are ready,” Green said. “This colt is a big, two-turn kind of horse and he would have not done as well, in my estimation, in March or April. He did have a couple of hiccups. He's over that and he looks like he will be able to go forward with us now as the races get longer.” D.J. Stable joined with Gary Barber a few hips later to acquire a filly by Maclean's Music (hip 783) for $250,000, also from the de Meric Sales consignment. 13. German Derby hero Kamsin (Ger) (Samum {Ger}) has died at the age of 19, Jour de Galop reported on Friday. A resident of Haras de la Baie in 2024, the dual purpose stallion stood for €2,500 this year. “We found the stallion dead in his box in the morning,” said stud representative Andre-Jean Belloir to the JDG. “At night, he ate his ration and everything seemed normal.” Bred by Gestut Karlshof, the half- or full-sibling to four black-type horses raced in the colours of Stall Blankenese and was trained by Peter Schiergen. Placed in one start at two, he won his maiden by nine lengths first out at Krefeld in March of 2008, before taking the G3 Fruhjahrspreis des Bankhaus Metzler in May. After his G1 Deutsches Derby victory two starts later, he ran second–promoted to first–in the G1 Rheinland-Pokal der Sparkass that August and added the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden in September. Unplaced in the 2008 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, he opened 2009 with a victory in the G2 Gerling-Preis. Retired with a mark of 13-6-1-0, and earnings of $996,940, the son of group winner Kapitol (Ger) (Winged Love {Ire}) stood in Germany beginning in 2011 before spending 2017-2020 in France. After three seasons at Annshoon Stud in Ireland (2021-2023), he returned to France for 2024. Group winners Nica (Ger), Ladykiller (Ger), and Lips Queen (Ger) feature among his six Flat stakes winners. Over jumps, Kamsin has sired On The Go (Fr), the winner of the 2018 G1 Grand Steeplechase de Paris, as well as Imbatable Du Seuil (Fr), Nosferatu (Fr), and Libeccio (Fr).
