Magice powers away with the J Swap Stockfoods 1200 at Matamata on Wednesday. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) Exciting two-year-old Magice replicated the early feats of his Group 1-winning relative with an impressive maiden victory at Matamata on Wednesday. The son of Savabeel is a full-brother to Noverre, who was victorious at his second raceday appearance before scaling the heights of a dazzling win in the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) in 2021, before joining his champion sire on the stallion roster at Waikato Stud. Magice is the fourth foal out of Magic Dancer, a Rip Van Winkle mare who won the Group 3 2YO Classic (1200m) and was later purchased by Chittick Investments Ltd as a broodmare prospect. Matamata trainer Glenn Old was entrusted with the care of the well-bred colt, initially for pre-training with an Australian future in mind. “I got him mainly to do the fundamentals with him and a bit of pre-training, but Gary (Chittick) decided to keep him in New Zealand instead of sending him to Melbourne just yet, which was on the cards,” Old said. Magice debuted at Rotorua last month and was beaten only by Super Photon, an impressive son of Super Seth that claimed the Listed 2YO Stakes (1400m) at Te Rapa last Saturday at his second appearance. Starting a $2.90 favourite, Magice was tipped to go one better at Matamata, and he flew an outside barrier to join first-starter Pinky Pie at the head of the field, while racing ungenerously down the back straight under Jasmine Fawcett. Magice led the juveniles into the straight greenly, but once he straightened, the colt let down strongly and kicked away from Whiskey ‘N Roses by 1.75 lengths, the latter having improvement to come off a tidy debut. “He raced a bit fiercely early and looks like he still has a fair bit to learn, but the further the race went, he flattened out nicely,” Old said. “Jasmine is my stable rider, so she knew him well and rides all of his work. We decided to be positive from the draw and ride him handy. “When they challenged him, he found a good kick.” Old indicated that Magice may have another run in his current preparation, while a short let-up prior to a spring campaign was also a possibility. “Going forward, this is definitely a step in the right direction, but I’m not sure what we’ll do next,” he said. “I’ll talk to Gary tomorrow, but he may have a short let-up to get ready for the spring, or possibly have one more run.” The Waikato Stud colours featured in the winner’s circle later on the card, with homebred filly Sweetpea taking out the Entain – NZB Insurance Pearl Series (1400m) for trainer Stephen Marsh and apprentice Triston Moodley. Another progeny of Savabeel, Sweetpea is a half-sister to multiple Group 3-performer Pretty To Sea and Group Two-performer Bonny O’Reilly. Horse racing news View the full article

Midnight Runner will contest the Jan Wisely @ First National Real Estate/Sparrow Logging Handicap (1600m) at Riverton on Friday. Photo: Monica Torreto Winton trainer John Phillips has been welcoming the wet weather in Southland this week ahead of his wet track specialist Midnight Runner’s return to racing at Riverton on Friday. The evergreen nine-year-old will head into the Jan Wisely @ First National Real Estate/Sparrow Logging Handicap (1600m) in a fresh state, having placed in his previous two outings this preparation. “He had a bit of a freshen-up since his last go and he has trained on really well,” Phillips said. “He is going to get a wet track to suit. It is raining here at the moment (Wednesday) so there will be some tired horses down there on Friday.” While the track conditions, rated a Heavy 10 on Wednesday morning, will suit the son of Jimmy Choux, Phillips said he will still have to contend with weight, giving some of his competitors a six-kilogram advantage. “The weight is going to be a thorn in his side,” Phillips said. “He has got 60 kilos and some of them are going to claim down to 50kg, which is going to make it difficult, but we have also got a (four-kilogram) claimer on him in Ruvanesh (Muniandy). “We have taken the hood off him and hopefully he will settle without that on. Sometimes with the hood on he can truck up.” Midnight Runner has drawn barrier two on Friday and Phillips believes the mile distance may be a bit beyond his gelding in the twilight of his career. “We will try and settle him just off the speed,” he said. “1200-1400m is more his go, his stats aren’t too impressive over a mile, but I am more than happy with his condition.” Phillips has eyed a more suitable trip at Wingatui next month for his charge and he said Midnight Runner would then be raced sparingly, with the possibility of retiring the nine-win gelding at the end of this preparation. “There is a 1400m at Wingatui on June 2, that will be more his go,” Phillips said. “The mile will find him out, but he has got to have a run somewhere and there is nothing else. “He will race only sparingly this year because his possible retirement might be due, but we will take him through until August and when the tracks start to firm up, he will go out. “He has got to an age now where he is just below the top tier. He is competitive and he tries hard, and he is alright down this end of the country.” While Midnight Runner is nearing the end of his racing career, Phillips is excited about the prospects of a juvenile that has recently joined his barn. Phillips went to Karaka last year where an Embellish colt in Archer Park’s New Zealand Bloodstock Book 2 Yearling Sale draft took his fancy, and he went to $8,000 to secure the youngster. Undertaking his early education with Riccarton trainer Danny Crozier, the colt, now named Woodlands, has made his way to Winton, and Phillips is hoping he can target some feature southern three-year-old races with him next year. “He just got his barrier certificate today,” Phillips said. “He has been up at Danny Crozier’s for a bit of education and he is quite a nice type who I bought at the sales. His name is Woodlands, named after my old hometown. It is a family affair with my brothers and their sons involved. “We will just look at some of those three-year-old races down here around Christmas time. Those Guineas races are now $80,000-$100,000. It is great money and we don’t have to travel to get it.” Horse racing news View the full article

Ballarat Racecourse will receive grants from the Victorian Government for upgrades. (Photo by Pat Scala/Racing Photos) Racing clubs in Western Victoria will benefit from new infrastructure that will help boost local economies, benefit trainers and racegoers and protect animal welfare thanks to investment from the Allan Labor Government. Minister for Racing Anthony Carbines today visited the Ballarat Racecourse, Burrumbeet Racecourse and The Ballarat Greyhounds at Morshead Park to announce the latest milestones across three racing infrastructure projects backed with almost $3 million from the Labor Government. Unveiled today, the new training track at Ballarat Racecourse will allow more trainers and horses to be based at the club, taking capacity from 400 horses to 650 over the last 6 years. The Government provided more than $1.3 million from its Victorian Racing Industry Fund towards the project. The reconstructed grass training track has improved the previously narrow design and poor drainage, which regularly resulted in the track being closed for training. New funding from the Government’s Regional Customer Facilities Grant program has been secured for Burrumbeet Racecourse to install large shade sails at the track, encouraging year-round use. The sails will cover the family play area and mounting yard, protecting racegoers from the elements at the Club’s annual New Year’s day meeting – one of the largest events in the region. The shaded areas will also provide a valuable asset to more groups wanting to use the racecourse for local celebrations and events all year round. The Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club has constructed a new kennel building, which will improve the quality and safety of greyhound racing at Morshead Park. The design provides more natural light and grass outdoor areas, and includes 112 kennels as well as new wash areas, private isolation kennels, a swab kennel bay and steward’s room and storeroom. The Government supported the kennel upgrade with more than $1.6 million provided through the Victorian Racing Industry Fund. The racing industry in the Ballarat region generates $89.1 million for the Victorian economy and helps sustain almost 700 full-time equivalent jobs in the area. Since 2014, the Government has provided more than $10.2 million to support 52 racing events and 30 infrastructure projects in. Horse racing news View the full article

What The Goodwood 2024 Where Morphettville Racecourse – 79 Morphett Rd, Morphettville SA 5043 When Saturday, May 11, 2024 Prizemoney $1,000,000 Distance 1200m Conditions Set Weights + Penalties 2023 winner Royal Merchant (15) | T: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace | J: Michael Dee (52.5kg) Visit Dabble The Goodwood will headline the final day of the 2024 Adelaide Racing Carnival at Morphettville. Of the 16 runners set to clash over 1200m, only two have tasted success at the top level, so there is every chance we could witness a maiden Group 1 winner on Saturday. With both Amelia’s Jewel and Oscar’s Fortune making the trip across the Nullarbor, there will be runners from all over the country competing in this year’s edition of The Goodwood. Will we see a South Australian horse win it, or will the interstate dominance continue? The Goodwood 2024 odds Amelia’s Jewel leads The Goodwood betting at +260 with online bookmakers, ahead of her fellow Western Australian runner Oscar’s Fortune (+450). Benedetta (+650) is next after running third in the Robert Sangster Stakes, while I Am Me and Johnny Rocker are locked together at +750. Skybird (+800) rounds out the runners in single figures; however, there appears to be a lot value to be found with the likes of What You Need (+1600), Sghirripa (+1600) and Climbing Star (+2000) expected to run well. The Goodwood 2024 speed map I Am Me and Oscar’s Fortune appear to be the likely leaders, with the likes of Sghirripa and Vilana expected to push forward from their outside barriers. Behind those four, What You Need, Johnny Rocker, Rubamos and Benedetta will push forward to settle off the speed. Extremely Lucky, Skybird, Karacasu and Amelia’s Jewel will settle out the back and should appreciate a strong tempo at the front of the field. Continue reading for HorseBetting’s top selections and $100 betting strategy for The Goodwood 2024. The Goodwood 2024 preview & form Oscar’s Fortune is coming off a third-place finish over 1200m in The Quokka against the best horses in Western Australia, along with some top horses from Sydney and Melbourne. The Dion Luciani-trained gelding has recorded five wins and four placings from nine career starts, including a runner-up finish in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes. With William Pike making the trip to Adelaide to ride this smart galloper, it is expected that Oscar’s Fortune will settle on speed and prove very hard to run down with his light weight. After finishing off strongly over 1100m in the Group 3 John Hawkes Stakes, What You Need appears primed to run a big race third-up and should appreciate a rise in trip to 1200m for the first time. Although the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained entire has never competed at Group 1 level, he is a smart type and his last-start placing showed he is looking for more ground. At $17 with top horse racing betting sites, What You Need represents great value. I Am Me was far from disgraced last start in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes when finishing fourth, only 1.4 lengths behind Climbing Star. After drawing barrier one, this daughter of I Am Invincible will push forward and should find an economical run along the inside rail. Skybird couldn’t have been more impressive when taking out the Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes in her last run; however, she could be looking for further now that she is third-up for the campaign. The Mitchell Freedman-trained filly will settle near the rear of the field, and if the leaders go too quick, she will be flying home late. Almost every starting position disengages from the course proper, with the exception being for the sprinters. Both the 900m and 1000m starting points come from a chute position form the north-east side of the course, with a short run to the first bend. Major races held at Albury racecourse The Listed Albury Gold Cup (2000m) is considered the biggest race days across the region, drawing together plenty of quality both locally, and even some metropolitan level gallopers making the trip to inland NSW. Karaka Millions riches are set to be amplified next season, with horses eligible for the lucrative NZB Karaka Millions Series racing for an additional $1m in bonuses. In an exciting new initiative, NZB and NZTR, generously supported by Entain, are delighted to announce the Karaka Millions Mega Maiden Series, which will see $1m in bonuses up for grabs across 40 maiden races each season, for the next three years. Comprised of 40 non-Saturday maiden races located throughout New Zealand, a $25,000 bonus will be struck if a Karaka Millions eligible horse, three years or older, wins. The winning owner will take home $20,000 and the successful trainer $5,000. NZB Managing Director Andrew Seabrook said NZB has been wanting to see more of its sales graduates reap the benefits of the Karaka Millions Series for some time. “By hosting a $1m maiden series over 40 races, that goal will be well and truly satisfied,” he said. “I’d like to thank Bruce Sharrock, Cameron George and the NZTR Board for their continued support of NZB and the Karaka Millions Series. ”Because of NZTR’s financial contribution, we were able to raise the TAB Karaka Millions 3YO to $1.5m this year which in turn led to a much larger uptake in nominations. As a result of that we are now able to introduce this new maiden series, which will get to the grass roots of racing in this country. “I’d also like to thank Dean Shannon, Lachlan Fitt, Cameron Rodger and their wider team, whose contribution to this new initiative underscores Entain’s desire to see our industry thrive at every level.” NZTR will determine which 40 maiden races will feature in the 24/25 season Series, which will run from September to May of each racing year. The selected races will be announced next week with NZTR Chief Executive Officer Bruce Sharrock pleased to see additional bonuses elevate the New Zealand racing product across the board. “NZTR is proud to be working with NZB and Entain to bring an additional million dollars in bonus funding to benefit owners and trainers across the regions,” he said. “Following on from other collaborations recently, this is yet another initiative to encourage people to breed, purchase and race horses in New Zealand.” In 2023 Entain partnered with NZB as naming sponsor of the TAB Karaka Millions Twilight Meeting; the $1m TAB Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m) and the $1.5m TAB Karaka Millions 3YO (1600m). Entain’s additional support of the Karaka Millions Mega Maiden Series further strengthens that partnership and signals their confidence in the lucrative Karaka Millions Series. “This is a great initiative that we envisage will boost field sizes across the country,” Entain Australia and New Zealand Managing Director – New Zealand, Cameron Rodger said. “Having $25,000 worth of bonuses to chase in a maiden race will undoubtedly encourage Kiwi owners and trainers to keep striving for that maiden win. This series, as well as series like the Entain NZB Insurance Pearl Series, means there are more bonus opportunities for more horses in New Zealand than ever before.” View the full article

They also sell very well at the Ready To Run Sales and out of trials” Sweynesse will remain at $10,000+GST King Of Comedy stood his third season at stud last year and his eldest progeny are now yearlings. Kingman, the second fastest stallion in history to sire fifty stakes winners, currently sits at 78 Stakes-winners, siring an impressive 27 in 2023 alone. Recent results in Australia show that King Of Comedy will really suit being at stud in this part of the world with Kingman’s Group One winners, Zardozi and King Colorado showing his incredible strike rate is working in both hemispheres. King of Comedy was at one point rated the best three-year-old in Europe after his performance in the stallion making St James’s Palace Stakes. Behind King of Comedy that day was Too Darn Hot who has made an excellent start at stud in both Europe and Australia. “King Of Comedy has the looks, pedigree and racetrack performance to be a hit at stud. His first-born foals are now yearlings and look very strong and balanced.” said Luigi Muollo. King of Comedy will stand at an unchanged fee of $7,000. + GST. Dual Group One-winning stallion Press Statement by Hinchinbrook continues to build an impressive sire record. At stud, Press Statement has already sired 177 individual winners for more than $20 million in earnings, including six stakes winners and ten stakes performers. “Press Statement is a young proven stallion with an incredible 73.5% winners to runners ratio from his first two crops and three new Stakes-performers in the last month alone.” Press Statement will stand at a fee of $6,000. + GST. “Novara Park is always looking at offering upside and value for money to breeders. Amelia’s Jewel bounced back to form with a win the WA Guineas. Photo: Western Racepix Perth’s shining star Amelias Jewel has been allocated barrier nine, among a field of 17 contenders for this Saturday’s Group 1 Goodwood event at Morphettville. Top Australian bookmakers have placed Amelia Jewel as the $3.80 favourite to break her four-race losing streak on May 11. Before moving to Annabel Neasham’s stable in Sydney, the Simon Miller-trained Group 1 winner will represent Western Australia under the guidance of jockey Damian Lane. Amelias Jewel has faced two tough defeats in this current spell, finishing second in the Roma Cup and the Quokka. Her last triumph dates back to September of last year, when she narrowly bested Pride Of Jenni in the Stocks Stakes at The Valley. Among the challengers standing against Amelias Jewel are three promising three-year-olds: Oscars Fortune (barrier eight), Skybird (barrier five), and Stretan Angel (barrier seven). Meanwhile, Learning To Fly, who finished as runner-up in the Sangster race, drew gate 14. Amelias Jewel faces a task ahead as she navigates her wide barrier position and competes against a top-level field if she hopes to emerge triumphant on Saturday. 2024 The Goodwood Barrier Draw And Bookmaker Odds 1. By Dave Di Somma, Harness News Desk Headlined by the unbeaten Rubira, the clash of the two-year-old colts and geldings will add a lot of lustre to today’s seven race midweek meeting at Addington. The $12,500 NZB National Weanling Sales Mobile Pace (6.37pm) will see the Mark and Nathan Purdon-trained star Rubira renew his rivalry with Always Dreaming and take on fellow race winners in the Robert and Jenna Dunn-trained pairing of Got The Chocolates and Malakai. It’s also a precursor to the Group 1 $110,000 NZ Welcome Stakes at Addington on Friday week (May 17). “He’s still learning but he has a great will to win,” says Blair Orange, who has driven him to victory in all three of his race day starts, “and he’s winning in different ways.” “In the first one he trailed, then he was three wide and parked and in the last one was three wide and then went to the front and stayed there.” “He’s pretty versatile.” In his last start, the Group 1 Diamond Creek Classic at Invercargill, he just held out the Nathan Williamson-trained and driven Always Dreaming. He’ll be a race rival again and has drawn seven, one place inside Rubira. “The wide draw doesn’t make it easy,” says Orange, “and we certainly don’t take any of the others lightly.” “Nathan’s one got very close last time and the Dunns’ ones have been running good races too – you take nothing for granted with the babies.” As well as Got The Chocolates (John Dunn) and Malakai (Tim Williams), the Dunns will line up Bruntwood Brigade. He is one of three first starters – the among two being Sacetas for trainer Tom Bagrie and the Darren Keast-trained Bettor Fortune. As a very handy second stringer to Rubira, the Purdons will also have the well performed Party Central in the race. To be driven by Natalie Rasmussen, he’s drawn well at two over the 1980 metres. He’s placed in both his race day starts and is raced by the same ownership group as Rubira’s (Mrs G J Kennard, P I Kennard, Breckon Racing Syndicate, G A Woodham, Mrs K J Woodham, R Cole, Mrs S A Cole). Vying for his seventh consecutive driving premiership Orange is the leading driver again in 2024, with 70 wins. John Dunn is currently second on 57, with Tim Williams on 47. View the full article

With the Queensland Racing Carnival kicking off last Saturday, this week’s edition of The Follow Files will focus on three runners that are expected to play a role in some of the Listed and Group races over the next two months. Below, you will find three runners that you should add to your blackbook after producing strong results at Eagle Farm and Caulfield last weekend. Caulfield Track rating: Good 4 Rail position: +8m entire circuit Race 10: Benchmark 84 Handicap (1400m) | Time: 1:23.11 Horse to follow: Chorlton Lane (1st) Chorlton Lane recorded his second win in as many starts this campaign, as the Ciaron Maher-trained gelding launched late to nab Bigolino in the shadows of the winning post over 1400m. The son of Mehas was slightly held up at the top of the home straight, but once Celine Gaudray got him into clear galloping room, he let down with his customary booming finish. With a record of five wins and four placings from 10 starts, Chorlton Lane is starting to build a strong resume and will get his chance in black-type races soon. When to bet: Post-race, Ciaron Maher’s stable foreman Jack Turnbull confirmed that the stable has nominated Chorlton Lane for the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap. However, to get into the Stradbroke, he will need to win another strong race to raise his handicap rating, and we will be following him wherever that may be. Eagle Farm Track rating: Good 4 (down to Soft 5 after R3) Rail position: +7m entire circuit Race 6: Listed Dalrello Stakes (1000m) | Time: 0:56.89 Horse to follow: Embassy (2nd) Embassy entered the Dalrello Stakes first-up off a two-month freshen, and that lack of race fitness was evident over 1000m, as the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained colt couldn’t keep up with the leaders early but finished the race off strongly. Although he was beaten by Mishani Lily, the son of I Am Invincible took significant ground off the winner in the final 100m, and they spaced the rest of the field. Rising in distance to 1100m or 1200m next start could be the recipe for success for this colt. When to bet: The next race in the Queensland 2YO series is the Group 2 Spirit Of Boom Classic on May 18 at Doomben. If the Snowden team sends Embassy to that race next start, he will prove very hard to beat over 1200m. Race 7: Benchmark 78 Handicap (1200m) | Time: 1:10.33 Horse to follow: Warby (2nd) Tony Gollan trained the trifecta in the seventh race at Eagle Farm last Saturday, and Warby was in the middle of the three runners as the four-year-old gelding was narrowly beaten by Immoral over 1200m. Given that the son of Hellbent was first-up, he produced a strong fresh run to go down in the final stride, with his fitter stablemate getting the better of him very late in the piece. With a strong record second-up (4:2-0-0), it is expected that he will improve off that run and will appreciate a rise in trip. When to bet: If Tony Gollan can find a race over 1350m or 1400m in a similar grade second-up, Warby will get every chance to go one better and record another win. While still officially remaining on the fence when it comes to whether or not he will run his GI Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan (Goldencents) in the May 18 GI Preakness S., trainer Kenny McPeek confirmed that an appearance in the middle jewel of the Triple Crown is a distinct possibility. “Who wouldn't want to?” he replied when asked if he is leaning toward running in the Preakness. “You only get so many of these windows of opportunity. It would give him a chance to prove himself again and maybe make amends for his loss in the GI Arkansas Derby. We wouldn't run him just for those reasons. But if he's well and he's ready and we feel like he can win it, we will go. We have a few days. There's no rush to make a decision.” McPeek explained why he is being deliberate about the decision. “The colt is doing fine,” he said. “We're going to get him back to the track [Wednesday]. He's been in the feed tub the last couple of days, so I'm not overly worried about that. An old guy told me years ago, don't make a decision until you absolutely, positively have to. We just want to get him back out on the racetrack and make sure he is moving good and that his energy level is fine. Right now, I can't tell you one way or another. The owners and I will discuss it and ultimately we'll do the right thing. I actually told [co-owner and breeder] Lance [Gasaway] before the Kentucky Derby that because we skipped the Rebel, I felt pretty good that, if we needed to, we could run back in the Preakness. At this stage, I am optimistic. But right now we don't need to make a call.” When asked about the spacing between the races in the Triple Crown, McPeek had a number of opinions, but said, “I don't think the two weeks is that big of a deal.” “I've run horses back in two weeks plenty of times in my career,” he said. “But if they made me commissioner or whatever and I could rearrange the Triple Crown, I would have it run on the first Saturday in May, the first Saturday in June and the first Saturday in July. But you'd have to get three huge organizations to agree to that. I think the uniqueness of the Triple Crown is the two weeks, three weeks. That's why it is such a test. “The fact that we've removed Lasix from the conversation makes it an even better test. Horses recover quicker without the Lasix. Lasix was a detriment. I know there are guys that will hear me say that and scream, 'I need Lasix.' No, you don't need Lasix. Maybe there are certain horses that do and, yes, we do have bleeders. But they shouldn't be the ones running in the Grade I, Grade II, Grade III races. The two weeks is easier without the Lasix because the Lasix would dehydrate a horse and then you'd have to recoup that fluid within the two weeks. “I'm not scared of the two weeks at all. I just want to make sure my horse is right.” The post McPeek Gives Update on Mystik Dan’s Preakness Status appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Construction on a trackside sportsbook and entertainment complex began with a ceremonial groundbreaking at Monmouth Park Tuesday which featured representatives from the New Jersey racetrack, Caesars Sportsbook, and local dignitaries who planted golden shovels in the ground to mark the occasion. The state-of-the-art facility and full-service restaurant combo is set to open in 2025, featuring 16,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor sports viewing with wall-to-wall flat screen televisions, food from nationally known restaurant partner Shake Shack, and more than 25 self-service betting kiosks. “We are proud to continue investing in Monmouth Park to elevate the sports betting experience for New Jersey sports fans,” said Dan Shapiro, Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer at Caesars Digital. “The sportsbook at Monmouth Park has been a success since Gov. Phil Murphy placed the state's first legal sports bet in 2018 and continues to be an outstanding complement to our online businesses. “We look forward to continuing our support for horse racing in New Jersey and bringing sports fans and racing fans to this historic racetrack.” Dennis Drazin, Chairman and CEO of Darby Development, LLC, operator of Monmouth Park, praised the ongoing relationship between the track and Caesars. “We're extremely excited to begin this next chapter with the upcoming opening of the new Caesars Sportsbook at Monmouth Park,” Drazin said. “This facility will be state-of-the-art with all the amenities that a first-class sportsbook can offer to patrons. As we start our sixth year of sports betting, we continue to see the growth and expansion we knew would eventually happen. This will be a magnificent addition to the Monmouth Park facility as our partnership with Caesars continues to evolve.” The post Monmouth Park, Caesars Celebrate Sportsbook Groundbreaking appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. For what appears to have been nothing more than a minor clerical error, the New York Gaming Commission and its head steward Braulio Baeza, Jr. has fined NYRA Racing Secretary Keith Doleshel $2,000 for “failing to conduct business in a professional manner.” Doleshel has appealed the decision and has the backing of NYRA management. Under Baeza, the Gaming Commission has been quick to fine NYRA employees for what can be argued are nothing more than honest and inadvertent mistakes. Among those who have been sanctioned with fines are clocker Richard Gazer, the former Senior Vice President of Racing Operations Frank Gabriel, Jr. and Assistant Racing Secretary Rob MacLennan. Doleshel personally accepted the entry of the first time starter Sassy Allie (Coal Front) for a maiden special weight race carded for May 2. The entry was made by trainer Robert Falcone, Jr., who provided NYRA with the information concerning the ownership of the horse. The ownership details provided by Falcone matched those in The Jockey Club registry, which is how the racing office reviews the accuracy of ownership details. However, a mistake was made somewhere along the line as the entry did not accurately reflect a recent change in ownership. Following the entry being accepted, the trainer alerted NYRA of the issue. NYRA informed all relevant parties so that the ownership details could be updated and corrected in the program. However, Baeza ordered that the horse had to be scratched. “Mr. Doleshel took an entry from Robert Falcone and the ownership was misstated by the trainer,” said Doleshel's attorney Drew Mollica. “At the end of the day, it was a minor administrative error. Keith did everything according to Hoyle. The trainer gave him the information. He crossed referenced it. There was no impropriety. There was no effort to conceal. It was strictly a bookkeeping error. Those sort of things happen every day and in every walk of life. “Once it was discovered by due diligence, it could have easily been corrected. All it would have taken was a simple announcement that would have corrected the information regarding the ownership. That's the type of thing all of us have heard over the public address system a thousand times. The horse should have been allowed to run and Keith should not have been fined. Instead of solving problems, the Gaming Commission decided to create a problem where there was none. “Not only did they scratch the horse to the detriment of everybody involved, the owner, the trainer, the association, the betting public, now they double down and fine Mr. Doleshel. This rule, not tending to business in a proper manner, is unconstitutionally vague. Everyone has a different opinion of what that means. This is insanity to its highest level.” NYRA Vice President of Communications Pat McKenna confirmed that Doleshel has the full support of track management. “This is but the latest example of the New York State Gaming Commission leveling significant financial penalties to individual NYRA employees for inadvertent, and sometimes unavoidable, clerical errors,” McKenna said. “Keith Doleshel is a valued and talented NYRA employee who always conducts himself professionally. As we explore separate avenues of recourse, NYRA will take every step to support an appeal should Doleshel pursue that option. These kinds of formal sanctions are a departure from standard business practices and have the effect of discouraging self-reporting and decreasing NYRA's ability to recruit and retain top talent.” This is the second time the Gaming Commission has fined Doleshel for “failing to conduct business in a professional manner.” Doleshel was fined on Oct. 20, 2022. That ruling stemmed from an incident at Saratoga in which an unauthorized agent was allowed to claim a horse. After the claim, NYRA officials informed the Gaming Commission of the error. Doleshel agreed to a settlement with the Gaming Commission and the offense was expunged from his record. According to Mollica, fines of more than $250 become part of a racing official's permanent record. “Those fines have to be reported every time a licensee applies for another license,” Mollica said. “That's a scarlet letter. Any time you apply for a license or a job in the racing industry, you have to disclose these. Why would anyone want to work at NYRA under these circumstances where your entire career could be ruined over a clerical error that was nobody's fault?” Baeza, regarded as the most powerful of the three stewards working at the NYRA tracks, has had to deal with controversies of his own. The stewards disqualified Brick Ambush (Laoban) after he crossed the wire second in the $500,000 Great White Way division of the New York Stallion Series at Aqueduct last December. Brick Ambush did not appear to do anything in the race to warrant being disqualified and many expressed an opinion that Baeza and the other two stewards disqualified the wrong horse by accident. Asked for comment, Gaming Commission spokesman Brad Maione said, “We have no additional information to provide beyond what's in the ruling.” The post NY Gaming Commission Fines Another NYRA Employee appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. After the shell-shock of City Of Troy's performance in Saturday's 2000 Guineas still reverberating, the Derby has a much more open look than it did last week and so the focus on Chester's May Festival will be even keener than usual. Wednesday's G3 Boodles Chester Vase has supplied the Blue Riband hero twice since 2013 and with a record 10 successes it is clear that Aidan O'Brien has come to prioritise the trial for his Epsom hopefuls. Ryan Moore had the pick of a duo this time and has opted for the form choice Grosvenor Square (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), as tailor-made a Derby candidate as can be found anywhere being from the family of Urban Sea and therefore Galileo himself. Dynamic with his all-the-way tour de force when last seen in Leopardstown's G3 Eyrefield S. in October, the half-brother to the G1 Irish Derby winner Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) is joined by the Dylan Browne McMonagle-ridden Agenda (Ire). Another son of Galileo, he earned TDN Rising Star status when taking the same Dundalk maiden in March won by the yard's 2022 Chester Vase scorer Changingoftheguard (Ire). “He looks the clear form choice on his form at two. I didn't ride him in any of his three starts last year, but he followed up a good third in the Beresford when an impressive winner of a group three at Leopardstown on deep ground,” Moore said of Grosvenor Square. “He promises to be well suited to this trip and there is no reason to think he won't be as least as effective on a decent surface. In fact, he will probably improve for it. He's a good prospect, but our other Galileo colt, Agenda, is far from out of this, either.” This select affair could easily shake up the Derby market, with Juddmonte's Cadogan Place (GB) (Frankel {GB}), a full-brother to Quadrilateral (GB), re-opposed by Godolphin's Hidden Law (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a son of the Oaks runner-up Secret Gesture (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) who he beat by a short head on debut at Southwell in March. Hidden Law has since won impressively at Newbury and could bolster Charlie Appleby's already-solid Epsom hand. “He's a nice colt who has just taken a bit of time which is why he started so late, he's a big horse,” Juddmonte's European racing manager Barry Mahon said of Cadogan Place. “I suppose we're going to find out what we have and we didn't have the Derby on our minds, simply as in he didn't make it to the track at two. He's a fine, big, well-bred horse and very nice physically. He's taken his time to mature, but he passed his first test and we're stepping up to the next level and if he passes that then there's all the conversations to be had.” Also in the mix is Rachel Hood's imposing Wolverhampton novice winner Pappano (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), who represents the Gosdens successful 12 months ago. “He won well at Wolverhampton first time out this year and has come forward for that run,” Thady Gosden said. “He is stepping up in grade significantly, but he is a horse we have always liked. He is obviously still inexperienced and he's stepping into a solid race where Grosvenor Square sets the standard off 109, but the race looks a good fit for him.” Fillies Take Their Turn In The Cheshire Oaks… Also on the card is the Listed Cheshire Oaks, where the key pointer looks to be the 10-furlong Leopardstown maiden won by the Joseph O'Brien-trained Galileo Dame (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}). She is re-opposed by Ballydoyle's runner-up Rubies Are Red (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the daughter of Red Evie (Ire) (Intikhab) who was in turn in front of the stable's Listed Victor McCalmont Memorial S. runner Flight Of Fancy (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). This was the maiden in which Above The Curve (American Pharoah) and Thoughts Of June (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) filled the first two places two years ago only for the form to be turned around here, while 12 months ago Savethelastdance (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) also got off the mark in that before delivering her stunning performance in this trial. “She won really nicely at Leopardstown and now steps up slightly in trip which we think she will handle fine,” Joseph O'Brien said of Galileo Dame. “Her two runs so far have been on soft ground, so getting on better ground will be a slight unknown for her. However, we think she is a nice filly who will be able to hold her own in listed company going forward.” Ryan Moore has passed over the ride on Rubies Are Red for the Dundalk maiden winner Port Fairy (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and he rarely gets it wrong, particularly in this which he boasts five successes during the last 10 years. “I have been on board both for their runs this year and Port Fairy showed a good attitude to win at Dundalk, where she probably did it a bit snugly,” he said. “Rubies Are Red is a sister to Found among others and I think she probably finished second to a very good filly in Galileo Dame, who she meets again here. Improvement is needed from both, but of course the potential is there after just the two starts.” One who could yet become a leading British Oaks contender is the impressive Wolverhampton debut winner Forest Fairy (Ire) (Waldgeist {GB}), a certain stayer descended from Gestut Ammerland's ground-breaking Borgia (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}). “It was a good effort first time and I don't think we were expecting it,” trainer Ralph Beckett said. “She has done well for the time she has been given in between. She's a tall, well-balanced filly who has worked well on the grass at home and we're looking forward to it. This is the right place for her and she's been training well in the run up to it.” The post All Eyes On Chester With Epsom Classics Up For Grabs appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Average Joe Racing Stables Ltd. and Dan Wells' Mugatu (Blofeld), an also-eligible entrant in the GI Kentucky Derby and most recently fifth in the Apr. 6 GI Toyota Blue Grass S., will make his next start in the May 18 GI Preakness S., trainer Jeff Engler confirmed Tuesday. “He's getting better. He really moved up on the dirt. His numbers proved it. Seize the Grey (Arrogate), who won the [GII] Pat Day Mile, we finished in front of him in the Blue Grass. I heard Seize the Grey is going in the Preakness, so it's a logical spot,” Engler said. “We were a little frustrated we didn't get into the Derby. We feel the more distance the better for this horse. I do like the 1 3/16 miles, so we're going to head up.” A maiden winner over the Tapeta at Gulfstream last November, Mugatu opened 2024 with a pair of third-place efforts going one mile over the synthetic at Turfway over the winter. He was fourth in the Mar. 2 John Battaglia Memorial S. and eighth in the Mar. 23 Rushaway S. before making his third start over the dirt in the Blue Grass. Mugatu is scheduled to breeze five furlongs Saturday before shipping to Pimlico. While Mystik Dan (Goldencents)'s participation in the Preakness is still undecided, the Derby winner is expected to return to the track Wednesday at Churchill Downs. “That's a typical routine for us,” trainer Kenny McPeek said. “We'll walk them three days [after a race]. He could have gone back to the track [Monday] if we'd wanted, but he didn't need to.” Asked if he has seen anything that would rule Mystik Dan out of a Preakness engagement, McPeek said, “Not at all. Same thing. We've just got to get through the weekend and take it from there.” Entries for the Preakness will be taken Monday.
