It appears a significant slip. Quite a large chunk of turf dislodged. And there was evidently a second slip mark. If it was on the inside of the trial track, why would that be more slippery than anywhere else? Rougher maybe but surely not more slippery. Also, if it were then you'd hardly think the jockeys would be ok to ride if they only had a 10m strip they could safely ride on there, though if that was the plan then it makes some sense that the stipes overrode them because that would clearly make continuing such that stewards could not be satisfied that the track was in a "suitable condition that riders could ride in a safe and competitive manner, so the decision was made to abandon the meeting."

Oops. Stewards report there now. So; they over-rode the jockeys' consensus. Following the running of this race Stewards interviewed L Sutherland in relation to her mount slipping approaching the 300 metres. Stewards met with all riders then convened a track inspection committee involving Stewards, Riders and Club Officials, with two clearly visible significant slip marks being observed. Riders then met independently and advised Stewards that in their view the meeting could continue, subject to being closely monitored on a race by race basis. However, after considering all the evidence the Stewards could not be satisfied that the track was in a suitable condition that riders could ride in a safe and competitive manner, so the decision was made to abandon the meeting.

History says they won't abandon the Ellerslie meeting even if the track is unsafe.

Yes, that's a big concern and continues to occur. Horses and riders sent out on a track deemed to be unsafe but they don't determine that before they have put horses and riders at risk. Still no stipes report 4 hours later either.

I agree. Assuming the no strikes on the flank rule comes in in due course, it is only the last 200 that remains a significant problem. The jumps racing review identified a similar issue. "Even those who supported the continuation of jumps identified a concern about use of the whip during the races, especially at the end of the races after the last jump." So, I don't think that it's just Thomas and I that notice as has been suggested here.

1 September 2021 for the rules. Penalties were updated last year though. Yes. Rules are rules, if breaches are enforced. I don't recall CWJ having any major issues with the rules prior to that in recent years. Did he, as you inferred? I can 't recall him ever taking his hands off the reins on one of mine though it's hard to tell with a left-hander without looking at the head on.

Well I noticed. NZTR won't have. They have the same head in the sand approach that got the greyhounds where they are now. 6 or 7 flagrant breaches. We need relegation for that. If the 99.9% is correct, then most of those who would notice don't watch or participate any longer.
