Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted August 19, 2023 Journalists Share Posted August 19, 2023 After giving his rivals weight first-up in the Show County Quality, Buenos Noches ($5.50) has given his rivals wind burn as he glided on by to claim victory in the Group 3 contest at Randwick. The son of Supido entered the Show County Quality as the clear class horse in the race, after running well in both Group 1’s at Flemington, the Newmarket Handicap and Lightning Stakes during the autumn as a three-year-old colt. Dylan Gibbons settled Buenos Noches back in the field and let him go through his gears before finding clear air to chase down the leading duo of Argentia ($7) and Dragonstone ($6.50). Although he wanted to lay in and do a little bit wrong, the Mattew Smith-trained galloper straightened with 100m to go and booted clear to record a dominant victory. 2023 Show County Quality Replay – Buenos Noches Winning trainer Matthew Smith is on track at Randwick today, and he spoke post-race about the win of Buenos Noches. “That was what I wanted to see,” Smith said. “It was good to see him come back and do that. You hope they can do that but you never know when they are first-up. “He’s a talent. He had the form on the board but you just want to see them come back and do it. “I think they (Everest slot-holders) were waiting to see him today. “The Everest is where we want to be, we are on our way, first box ticked. “I’m not sure where we will go next. We can have a good look at a program now and work it through.” After riding his second winner on the day, Dylan Gibbons spoke about the win, and the potential of Buenos Noches suiting The Everest later in the spring. “I thought I’d be in a much nicer spot than that probably following something that was going to go forward, but look, things are pretty easy when you’ve got a fair bit of horse underneath you,” Gibbons explained. “I pressed the button when I needed to and the thing is he’s got there quite easy, pricked the ears and had a great time. “I think it’s onwards and upwards from here. “He’s very hairy, he had a bit of pre-race antics. “He had that nervous energy. There’s a 1200m race (The Everest) around October time that I think might suit him.” Buenos Noches is now $26 in The Everest futures markets with most online bookmakers.
