Aspray Back in Winner’s Circle in Lake Placid

Ran Jan Racing's Aspray (f, 3, Quality Road–Up {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), who lost her unbeaten record when fourth in the July 8 GI Belmont Oaks Invitational last time out, returned to the winner's circle with a sparkling performance in the GII Lake Placid S. at Saratoga Saturday. The bay filly, sent off at 3-1, settled just off the pace behind sensible fractions. She produced a powerful rally to take charge with a furlong to go and sailed clear to win by three lengths, completing the 1 1/16 miles over the good turf in 1:42.85. Surge Capacity (Flintshire {GB}) was second and Soviet Excess (Uncle Mo) was third.

Aspray graduated on debut in an off-turf special weight at Tampa Bay Downs in January. She returned to take a one-mile optional claimer over that turf course Mar. 22 and added a win in the one-mile Hilltop S. at Pimlico May 19. She suffered her first loss when fourth when stretched to 1 1/4 miles in the Belmont Oaks.
