Chynna Marston disqualified

What a big in racing it has been! With spring racing just around the corner, Punt Drunk is set to take you through the week that was in the racing scene.

With finals approaching in the footy and Group 1 racing coming at us thick and fast, it is a perfect time to be a racing/sports fan!

Chynna Marston is a piece of work

On the verge of the Spring Carnival kicking off in both Sydney and Melbourne, all eyes should be on the track, but unfortunately a certain Chynna Marston and her partner Alex Kean have stolen the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Punt Drunk is usually a bit of fun where we find some obscure things from around the racing world, but when a former racehorse is ‘shot dead and thrown into a bonfire’, it wouldn’t be right if we did not call out this type of behaviour.

On Wednesday, Racing NSW released their findings following a lengthy investigation into alleged mistreatment of thoroughbred racehorses by Marston and her partner.

Back in June, Racing NSW’s vet Dr Carly Garling attended the pair’s property and found 12 horses had a body condition score of either 1/5 or 1.5/5 (poor health).

Marston was found guilty on a total of eight charges, half of which were animal welfare breaches related to her involvement with the Recycled Racehorses charity.

What made it even worse was Marston took to social media to defend herself….it didn’t go down well with the racing community.

The longest mic drop in history 🎤✌🏼

How many Group 1’s will Amelia’s Jewel win this spring?

She is already a Group 1 weight-for-age winner at three, but Amelia’s Jewel might just be the best horse in the country heading into the spring.

Having won the Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) in December, she showed she can get out over a trip, but her effort to finish second in The Quokka (1200m) when beaten a pimple, might just be her best run yet.

The Jewel of WA racing returned with a disgustingly great trial, with some comparing the way she finishes races to that of the mighty mare Winx.

So how many Group 1’s can she claim this spring? She looks set to run in either the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1600m) or Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) third-up into her campaign, with the likely grand final expected to be the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), before a tilt at Flemington Group 1 during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

If you set the line at +1.5 Group 1 wins, it would be hard to ignore.

Amelia’s Jewel could be the next big thing in horse racing.
