Group 1 racing returns to Victoria for the 2023/24 season as the Memsie Stakes (1400m) headlines a stacked 10-race program at Caulfield on Saturday afternoon to kick off the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Perfect conditions are forecast, the track is rated a Good 4, and the rail returns to the true position. Racing on Memsie Stakes Day 2023 is set to get underway at 12:05pm AEST.

Race 1: BM70 Handicap (1600m)

Boh Rhap has strung together three straight wins and can make his Caulfield debut a winning one. The Archie Alexander-trained galloper fought on doggedly to beat Duvach at Sandown last time out when settling up on speed, and his win prior at Geelong showed tactical versatility when taking a sit and powering home. He draws barrier two on Saturday, and if John Allen gets an ounce of luck on the home turn, look for Boh Rhap to burst clear and continue his picket fence.

Race 2: BM78 Handicap (1400m)

Chorlton Lane was an impressive Rosehill winner on his Australian debut three runs back, ran nicely in a strong form race two back, and then won arrogantly at the Rosehill 1400m on August 12. Mark Zahra will have this son of Mehmas settled towards the rear of the field on his Victorian debut, but with Rambler Rebel and Rheinberg set to make this a genuinely run event, it looks perfectly set up for Chorlton Lane to finish over the top of the front runners.

Race 3: Mares BM84 Handicap (1400m)

Marble Arch did enough first-up over 1100m to suggest the step up to 1400m second-up would be ideal. Having broken her maiden when second-up during her initial campaign, we are happy to assume that she derives great benefit with a run under her belt. From barrier five, Daniel Stackhouse should be able to stalk what looks to be a moderate speed. With a sharp turn of foot and a run at Caulfield under her belt, Marble Arch looks to present great value with online bookmakers early on.

Race 4: BM78 Handicap (2000m)

Frigid is racing in fine form this campaign, and on the back of a smart Sandown victory, the five-year-old mare can go on with the job on Saturday. Drawn in barrier five, the Frosted mare looks perfectly placed in this 2000m event, going around with just 53kg following Tatum Bull’s 3kg claim. If the pair can land the one-one position upon settling, we expect the lightweight and the old ‘mare in form’ saying to be a recipe for success.

Race 5: Group 3 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes (1200m)

The Group 3 McNeil Stakes is the first of the black-type events, and first-up from a spell, we are happy to side with Veight. Having claimed the Group 2 Sires’ Produce Stakes at Flemington in the autumn, the three-year-old colt has already shown he has an immense amount of talent. He will gain every favour in running under Damian Lane from barrier two, and despite conceding race fitness to a couple of market fancies, Veight has a sharp turn of foot and can spring something of an upset fresh.

Race 6: Listed Heatherlie Handicap (1700m)

The Listed Heatherlie Handicap features plenty of stayers heading towards the Caulfield Cup (2400m) or Melbourne Cup (3200m). With race fitness on his side, it is simply impossible to go past Jimmy The Bear, who comes off a smart 1600m win at Caulfield on August 19. He used his race fitness to his advantage to get the better of runners who were first-up like Right You Are. With just 55kg on his back under Billy Egan, if the pair can land midfield with cover from barrier nine, Jimmy The Bear can bring up a second-straight win at Caulfield.

Race 7: Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m)

Saturday’s quaddie kicks off with a cracking edition of the Cockram Stakes, and considering how easy Benedetta won first-up at Flemington, we simply cannot go past her. The four-year-old mare did plenty wrong when fresh but still proved too good for her BM84 opposition. She steps into Group company for the first time, but she has bigger fish to fry this campaign. She will need a touch of luck from barrier nine, but if Daniel Stackhouse can find a spot midfield with cover, Benedetta should prove too good for her rivals.

Race 8: Group 3 The Heath 1100 (1100M)

Kallos returns to the racetrack for the first time since finishing midfield in the Group 1 Goodwood (1200m) in May, and we expect he will make a winning return. A three-time winner from four starts during his autumn preparation, the James Cummings-trained sprinter has become a different beast since being gelded. His has readied himself with a sharp trial victory at Randwick, and with Jamie Kah hopping on board, the pair look the hard to beat in what looks to be a cracking edition of The Heath 1100.

Race 9: Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m)

Having returned a dominant winner in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m), Mr Brightside is going to take a power of beating in the $750,000 Memsie Stakes despite drawing the widest barrier. He is drawn directly outside Alligator Blood, who should give him a beautiful cart across the field and have him land in the moving line with cover upon settling. With Alligator Blood no doubt in need of a run and race favourite I Wish I Win drawn trickily in gate one, we’re hoping Mr Brightside can use his tactical advantage and race fitness to get the better of his main market rivals and hold off the chasing brigade.

Race 10: BM100 Handicap (1400m)

Devoted gets in on the minimum weight following Tatum Bull’s 3kg claim, and considering the son of Xtravagant took Amenable to within a long neck when first-up off a long spell, the former WA galloper looks a touch too classy for this lot. Devoted should land in a beautiful spot from barrier five, and barring any bad luck in the home straight, he should be bringing up career win five at start 13.
