The $50,000 Birdsville Cup will headline the seven-race program on the second day of the Birdsville Races this Saturday afternoon. Much like the first day, the dirt track will be in good condition with no rain forecast for the area. The rail will stay in the true position, and the first race on Birdsville Cup Day will jump at 12:59pm AEST.

Birdsville Cup Tip – Trumpsta

Trumpsta will have his first start under the care of Ron Stokes in the feature race of the day, coming off a strong performance first-up at Morphettville over 1500m on August 12. After settling behind the speed, this son of Starsplangledbanner battled on nicely in the final 300m and ran through the line well, indicating the extra 100m on Saturday will be ideal. After drawing barrier nine, John Keating will look to push forward and settle behind the speed before getting off the leader’s back to let down with a strong finish.

Best Bet at Birdsville – Cuban Affair

Since being transferred from the care of Anthony & Sam Freedman to Jay Morris in Queensland, Cuban Affair is yet to be beaten in two starts, including a six-length victory first-up at Julia Creek over 1200m on July 22. Last start, this son of Rubick was sent around as an odds-on favourite with online bookmakers and duly saluted by 1.5 lengths at Mount Isa over 1000m. Dan Ballard has ridden this four-year-old gelding at his last two starts, and he will have Cuban Affair out in clear air around the home bend before storming home late.

Next Best at Birdsville – Hurn Court

Hurn Court hasn’t missed the top two in his past five starts, and he comes to Birdsville in great form. This Rodney Robb-trained galloper was just beaten by Little Town Blues at Betoota in an Open Handicap last start; however, he will drop back to Benchmark 70 grade on Saturday and looks a clear standout in the 1000m contest. With a lot of speed expected, Richard Bensley will try to settle midfield and then run on. If Bensley can slot in one runner off the fence from barrier nine and make his move on the home turn, Hurn Court should get every chance to record his fourth victory in six starts.

Race 2 – Silk #4 Hurn Court (9)

6yo Gelding | T: Rodney Robb | J: Les Tilley (60.5kg)
