There might be only five races on the program at Darwin this Saturday, but it should be a competitive meeting. The feature race, a $22,500 Benchmark 76 over 1000m, has attracted a host of good sprinters. It hasn’t rained in Darwin since April 27, with sunny conditions, light winds, and a top temperature of 34C the forecast for Saturday. The rail will be in the true position and, as usual, Fannie Bay will provide a good surface.

BEST BET: CHANGE IS COMING

This guy produced a stunning first-up win at Fannie Bay during the Darwin Cup Carnival when he almost broke the track record over 1000m on July 15. That was after the four-year-old gelding left his rivals in his wake in a sizzling 900m trial. He’s been disappointing since, running fourth behind Early Crow – the eventual Palmerston Sprint winner – over 1100m in open company as a $1.70 favourite before a last-start third behind Little Town Blues over 1000m as a $1.40 favourite on August 5. The son of Capitalist takes on four other rivals this weekend and should be bouncing back to winning ways.

NEXT BEST BET: EXPERT WITNESS

A sprinting marvel in the Top End since arriving from Queensland, Expert Witness missed the Palmerston Sprint (1200m) and Montgomerie Lightning (1000m) during the Darwin Cup Carnival because of injury. At the start of the carnival, the five-year-old gelding returned from a spell to seal victory over 1100m in open company after a last-start second in the Pioneer Sprint (1200m) in Alice Springs on April 30. Before that, he had a win over 1000m and was second behind Savatoxl at weight-for-age level. He carries a big weight on Saturday and meets some handy rivals, but he boasts plenty of class.

NEXT BEST AGAIN: ARCH OF TITUS

He was a $5 quote with online bookies during the week, but Arch Of Titus could start the race as favourite after an impressive last-start win over 1200m against fellow three-year-olds on July 29. The four-year-old gelding will lump an extra 6kg this weekend, which won’t make his task any easier in a very open contest. Before arriving in the NT, the son of Snitzel had 12 starts in NSW, and after starting his career in promising fashion, his only win was over 1600m in a Class 1 at Goulburn in February. A first-up second at Fannie Bay against the three-year-olds behind NT Guineas winner Century Fox on June 24 was followed by a mediocre seventh behind Tubthumper in the Darwin Guineas (1600m) on July 8.
